Samsung Flagship Gingerbread Phone 2011 - Nexus One General

Nexus S? What?
Seems like Samsung is holding back when they designed the Nexus S and instead pulled their creative resources for a much better looking phone.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/11/exclusive-samsung-flagship-phone-with-gingerbread-and-huge-di/
It still looks like an Iphone 4 clone... but I'd say it owns Nexus S.

i cannot stand how samsung thinks its a good idea to clone iphone and iOS look as much as legally possible, its really a disgrace to android and i'll keep my nexus one thank you very much

I would be thrilled if this was the Nexus S. The hardware is so top notch but not running vanilla android and googles first to software updates ruins it for me.

Assuming its real , they failed to mention RAM amount in that slide . But im confident its fake , no way samsung will release something so awesome.

lol I hate how much it looks like an iPhone. Nexus S all the way.

This phone has almost the same specs as nexus s. Only difference is larger screen and 1080p record.
Waiting for this would be stupid. Stop kidding yourselves and get the nexus s. It's going to be epic.

Already confirmed as a hoax....

jm5503, how is it confirmed its a hoax? where is your source?
You yourself is a hoax by posting earlier that Gingerbread is released. You have zero creditability.

Well seems like androidpolice pulled the plug on this one.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/1...1-flagship-device-renders-are-fake-heres-why/
Hah, doesn't matter since I'll be holding on to my N1.

looks likee a fake to me

All of this doesn't matter. I just want gingerbread on my n1!!!!!! lol

Looks nice but its still a Samsung which means it'll have nice hardware, terrible software, and as soon as you buy it, they wont give a toss about you or any problems you may have with it, so I for one wont be buying it.

too bad fake looks cool spec

Doesn't matter if this phone really exists or not. It seems to be just a flagship, just like the SGS was when it came....with slow OS updates.
If this would be a dev phone, then it may be interesting.

1080p references on upcoming phones are for video output and camera recording, not display resolutions.

I was referring mostly to the link. Says playback and record.

Engadget already admitted that those images are of some Acer device or w/e. Not a real Samsung's prototype pic.
So don't look at the picture.

Nexus One vs. Galaxy S (T-Mobile USA)

The only difference I see is the .3 size increase in the screen. Anything else different? Thanks
Well apparently the N1 now officially has 2.2. I'd say that's a pretty big feature.
Yea, but the Galaxy S will also have 2.2 ... Its already been rooted by Paul...
The Galaxy has a Hummingbird GPU, which is more powerful than the Adreno the Nexus has. Actually I believe it is the best out of all the Android devices.

i think the jump from the N1 to the Galaxy is nice but more so for someone who wants to have the next best thing, because I'm certainly happy with my N1 with no hurry to purchase a new phone. My brother on the other hand has a blackberry and would like to try something else so i feel its a bigger jump for him then someone with current specs on a phone.
The Galaxy S does not have LED Flash.
Front facing camera
Lack of Camera Flash
Screen if closer to glass
Better GPU
It also has a better screen .... super amoled and real multitouch (like that matters since I don't play games on My phone
How about....it's not running stock Android, so it will take forever to get updates... If it gets updates at all. This is Samsung we're talking about. Anyone remember that Behold II? It's finally getting upgraded... to 1.6. I'd also want to know the details on whether any of the Google services have been replaced by Yahoo, as I had read a couple of months back on Samsung phones.

Well there is only 1 good version (pro), the other 4 are gimped beyond belief.
1. Galaxy has significantly better media playback. (mkv, divx, xvid ect)
2. Twice as fast 3D performance. (2x FPS in games)
3. Better and bigger screen. (Super Amoled + bigger ! )
4. Screen has flawless multi touch capability ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVlsRCMltDg
Why in the hell would T-Mo not attempt to push a technologically superior device? I just don't get it....Verizon, Sprint and the DeathStar(at&t) all entice customers with very good devices.... After reading the Tmo Vibrant specs I have no motivation to ditch my Nexus One at all. Actually I'm more inclined to get a HD2 and hack Froyo onto it.

Yeah the screen and gpu are the biggies in my book. Of course, nexus will be made with a tft LCD (I'm sure I butchered itsbreal make) instead of ****ty amoled soon so maybe the gpu will end up being the main attraction. Whatever I just hope there's a nexus two planned for the future
I do like it's name but will be hanging on to my Nexus for a while

Uh.. Seriously? Gimped? I too have no idea why they'd not include a FFcamera but being the bad ass phone it is spec wise, could no way in any shape or form consider it gimped lol... Jesus christ. I would only consider maybe a motoblur device gimped... or possibly the htc aria "gimped" a small fraction. Nevermind.
Only one good version? So this version isn't "good"? Please stop.

So, fellow EVO users, what does everyone think about the Nexus S?

Personally, I think it's just another plain-Jane Galaxy S phone. It has the same horrid, cheap, plasticy feeling apparently, and the specs are nothing out of the ordinary. No dual-core processor or anything exciting. I cannot wait for HTC's next offering, because their build quality is sooo superior to Samsung's, and it will most likely have the new dual-core processors.
i love it, i want it.

I didn't feel that it felt any better or worse to my EVO with regards to how cheap it felt. They both seem a bit "plasticky" for my taste.

You won't see dual cores from HTC until we near the summer. Samsung is actually probably the closest.
As for the Nexus S. I think it's alright, nothing revolutionary but I'd still consider it the best phone on the Market the day it's released. The Hummingbird is the current undisputed champ in the mobile CPU/GPU game. A 4" SAMOLED is near the top, better display than the EVO's at least. NFC chip + Gyroscope. The cameras on the Galaxy S are currently the best on any Android phone so the Nexus S shouldn't be any different. I also believe that the GPS chip was replaced so no SGS GPS horror show. So hardware wise it's not a huge leap but only a (very) small evolutionary step forward from what was the top spec'd Android phone.
Build is 50/50, I think this is a slick looking shape. Very thin, some nice curves but the plastic is a step down from the Nexus X. That said, our EVOs are pretty much 100% plastic as well so who am I to judge.
The big thing though is quick, straight from Google, Android updates; and that pretty much puts it on top of any Android phone IMO.

I have yet to see a samsung device I was impressed with. The galaxy looked nice til I held one. I'll wait for HTC's next release....though, I do wish they would release one with straight Android on it, and no sense overlay, so that we could get our updates straight from google.
i kinda like it but it has a average processor and doesnt have HSPA+.
looks cheap and i think there is no SDCARD support ? if so that's a deal breaker for me

no sdcard kinda sucks but it has 16GB built in.
ok just found out it doesnt have any notification LEDs. i dont understand that.
well i would never get it, I have been trying to root my girls epic and with custom recovery for ages( finally got it last night) hacking on samsung is not that fun
Also does has the CM team ever done a sammy phone that will be a sign if one of us on the fence people would want to get one
Also GPS on the my girls epic is horrid at most times, Wonder if google who is big into location based- services is going to like not getting a lot of data back on their flagship phone

I guess my Evo having light leakage is considered superior build quality. Anyway I wouldn't buy any phone with the name Samsung attached to it. I wouldn't even buy a Samsung toaster for my kitchen with my past experiences.

Don't really need a CM team for nexus s. It is stock. Same as N1. Will be what rooting and everything is based on from 2.3 and on.
Also as far as gps issues and any issues go, everything will be updated through google, not samsung. The only reason I hated epic and any of the samsung phones was the updates, Samsung is just ****ty when it comes to updates. But this changes that, everything will be done through google.
Tbh, the phone is 10x better then evo. Hardware wise and software wise. Nexus S will become the standard of rooting and any mods, just like N1 did. The cpu/gpu is better, the camera is better, the screen is better, its smaller in weight and size (the only part that sucks is that its 4.0, and not 4.3).
All in all it's a better phone when it comes to hardware, and the software is backed by google.
Wait...no 720p recording? Ill pass....

Not having HSPA+ is crazy though. HSPA only goes up to 7.2 and thats peak. HSPA+ has the potential of 20 at its peak and maybe more with a software update. Maybe thats why it get 17 DAYS STANDBY. I still kinda want one though.

Is the Atrix a good phone?

How is the Screen? Compared to lets say SAMOLED and Retina.
Is the Sound Quality good in the music player?
Is it truly faster?
Camera Good?
Will 2.3 make it REALLY fast?
With the way phones move and become outdated will the Atrix ever realize its true potential?
How is the build Quality/In Person?
Are YOU overall satisfied with it?
There was SO much hype behind it and what happened?? Now people are saying it was a waste, not good, disappointment, etc.

Well, i have the atrix myself and honestly im thinking of selling it an buying the lg optimus 2x. the biggest plus for the atrix are the better battery, the superior screen, and well the 1gb ram as opposed to the 512 on the lg, webtop is not bad either, but the locked bootloader is a legendary fail on the atrix (including all the restrictions moto put on...), for instance the optimus already has a working cm 7 mod, i dont believe atrix will have one anytime soon. however if you dont want to mod it and stuff than the atrix is great for you. The phone is fast, camer is semi decent, some phones have worser build quality than others ( i exchanged mine due to a nonworking fingerprint scanner - it was just some software bug and got one that has a squeaky shell ... im still hitting my head against the wall for swapping it out ...). I have a simunlocked one thats att branded tho and i had issues with wifi, to get it to work in my country, which i luckyly managed to fix some now im in general satisfied with it, it does pain big time tho that we cant do cm7 or other custom roms/kernels on it.

Mine likes to watch.
I find the screen to be good, yes its only LCD but the resolution is high and its is sharp and clear, then I don't find AMOLED screens to be as superior as everyone tosses on about anyway.
Sound quality is great, dependant on source of course.
Camera i find to be very good, slight annoying delay after button press for it to focus, but I can get very good shots with it (for a phone). People that diss a camera phone because of pixel count are retarded and don't know **** about digital cameras.
2.3 gives quite a boost to most phones so I guess so.
There are several more Tegra 2 phones to come out yet, i think it will only mature as a device. Exponentially if Moto unlock the bootloader.
I dont think you will get better build quality in a plastic bodied phone.
Sure am.
Most of this talk is centred around the locked bootloader an motoblur. motoblur can be gotten rid of easily with root and all fingers crossed on the bootloader thing.

1. screen's not bad. Doesn't match in Retina and SAMOLED in awsomeness dept though.
2. Music as in by the phone itself or with 3.5mm jack in a car? Otherwise it's pretty good.
3. Yeah, it's pretty snappy. This is my 4th android phone. Fastest one so far. Not bad for a stock ROM.
4. I'm not keen on 2.3 other than it has a better app/task/battery management. Someone else has to answer this. Or google it.
5. IMO, this phone isn't selling like hot cakes. Therefore, Motorola will put this phone in the back burner for support. So no, I don't think so.
6. I like the build quality. I dropped my phone once. I was sitting on my chair and it fell out of my pocket. Not a scratch. Feels cheapish IMO. But it feels good in the hand. (That's what she said.)
7. Yes, I'm happy with this phone. Custom ROM with a dual core would be %100 orgasmic.
8. Developement community doesn't locked bootloaders. Since they can't create custom ROMs on it, why buy it y'know?
Yes
///////////////////////
It's my first android phone and I like it, but it did teach me one thing...do not pre-order anything until someone else has it and you can read about it afterwards. I got this because of how cool my buddy's Galaxy S on T-mo was to load new roms and overclocks and all that good stuff. I didn't know anything at the time I preordered about locked bootloaders.

Wouldn't get my hopes up for Honeycomb, Google pretty much stated HC is tablet only and Ice Cream Sandwich is going to replace both Honeycomb & Gingerbread by the end of the year. So more then likely we'll get ICS long before we see HC for phones.

I'm guessing you had a Moment? The Transform is actually pretty nice for a low to mid level device.
I would also have to agree that when I switch from my shift a dual core is a must. As far as the Nexus S I wasn't impressed by it's design nor its specs. No expandable memory being on of the biggies. And no improvement in processor versus previous galaxy s phones, not 100% sure. I can't see what this device has that makes it superior to others, rather than just being vanilla android.
I'm not happy with Samsung's plasticy feel of their devices either. Makes them feel cheap. I do like the AMOLED screens but not the dotted effect that some (including me) can see.
However, I am seriously giving the Galaxy S II phones consideration when choosing my next device. Specs wise seems rather nice. Has dual core processor, nice camera, and expandable memory. And the Super Amoled Plus screen seems to correct the dotted effect of the previous Amoled screens as the rgb colors are evenly presented.

You my friend need to root your phone. Secondly, the nexus S 4G has not been out very long, and samsung is typically slow on the updates. I do not know if you ever had an EVO 4G (not shift), but when i originally had mine, it was absolutly horrible in terms of responsiveness and battery life (battery still sucks). This was 3 months after its release.
Why is this in the shift forum? Not to be an ass but I don't think this is necessary or productive. We need an offtopic forum lol

This is just a guess, but I think ALOT when on behind the scenes on the Nexus that we don't know about. I mean how would google allow their flagship phone to come out with technology that is outdated by almost a year? I think this phone was in development, and got held up, and by the time assembly on it started it was too late to scrap it. That's why there is another rumored Nexus that should be ready come Holiday season. Have to make up for your mistake somehow.

So today I stopped by phones 4 u on the high street and had a look at the Nexus. I love the design but my God it is big. There's a pic attached to show you the size comparison. Should've really demonstrated how big it is by holding a N1 next to it

So today I stopped by phones 4 u on the high street and had a look at the Nexus. I love the design but my God it is big. There's a pic attached to show you the size comparison. The screen is so much better than the XL but its a bit disappointing that it still has a 5MP camera when the XL has an 8MP Camera.
I've fallen for it and will hopefully have mine in my hands tomorrow Will submit a system dump asap. But still gotta figure out how to root it :?

Do you honestly need to take 8mp pictures? You do realize that MP is only the size of the image and has absolutely nothing to do with the actual image quality right?

Exactly....look at a picture taken with a very old Nikkon D40 and compare it with any size MP point and shoot, it's not even close in quality. This is like everyone complaining about the lack of an exynos processor, doesn't seem to have any lag in any video or review I have seen. Specs are fine to use, just need to keep them in perspective and use them appropriately.

Thank God someone else knows what I'm saying. The lack of understanding is just amazing to me. People should really do research before talking. As far as I know about the processor, that the processor its using can typically be way overclocked. Plus now that we have full hardware acceleration, things will run very very well.

TI omap 4460 is a 1.5ghz processor that is underclocked for the GN, hence it can be clocked to that for sure and probably up to 1.8 or so. They designed ICS to be optimized for TI Omap processors. Now, I am less impressed with the gpu that comes with it, it is definitely the lowest powered of the top mobile chips. This is a beast of a phone and I hope we see some news on an HSPA version in the US.
Just in case anyone actually wants to see a N1 next to a Galaxy Nexus... here you go

You could just go to http://www.phone-size.com/?s=1,12,3 and then scroll out one or so clicks and the phone will be "life sized". However for demonstration purposes it still does a fairly good job.
Go big or go home.

LOL. Yeah, it is big. I just visited that site vonapets url'd and compared all my current phones (N1, SGS, Nexus S, Galaxy S II, Thunderbolt, Droid Charge) to the Galaxy Nexus: http://www.phone-size.com/?s=12,13,65,7,85,3 , and it's not much larger, and actually ~25% thinner, than the largest of my phones (the Charge) which fits easily in my slacks and jeans front pockets. Someone wearing painted on jeans might have issues I guess.
The Charge and SGS II are just a little too large for my hands to use comfortably one-handed. My thumb can't reach the bottom left of the phone without putting it in a precarious balanced position. The big 4.3" screens are great, though. I'm afraid the new Nexus might cross that threshold of being to big to be practical for me, but I'll still probably get one. LOL

This attitude. Now that everyone has read a few articles on sensor technology it seems EVERYONE feels the need to school people on cameras.
Yes, it's true, MP doesn't have that much to do with it. But the Galaxy Nexus camera is piss poor. It produces results almost identical to the NS camera, which i feel was essentially the same as the N1 before it. Look how far mobile cameras have come in the HTC titan and the iPhone 4S. For a flagship phone in this price range, this is simply unacceptable. For Samsung, even moreso as the shooter in the GS2 is much better. No wonder people make the 5MP 8MP comparison.
People need to stop being apologetic towards companies, and start calling them out on their mistakes. The processor in the Galaxy Nexus is acceptable, but the GPU is really not up to par with today's superphones. The plastic case construction is an improvement over the fisher-price NS, but still cheap garbage compared to the designs of HTC and Apple, yet they charge the same price.
Enough. Stop trying to school people and school the companies instead. It's the only way we'll get better products.
