[Q] Slow data speeds on T-Mobile ? - Omnia 7 General

Ran 2 speed tests on 3G today and only got 370kb, which compared to my friends Desire (also on T-mobile) and my old iPhone 3G, both of which got 1.7mb on the same websites, its pretty poor
Anyone else tried speed testing, or notice slow internet speeds ?
Thanks
Mark

Just call up T mobile and ask to be put on the 3GB plan. say that you thought you were on the 3GB plan with your new phone (don't mention it's WP7) but the download speeds are slow.
Hopefully they'll put you on 3GB and have unthrottled download speeds.

Fixed Slow Nexus S Data w/ call to Tmobile!

Just jumped from the N1 with an unlimited Android Data plan.I've been scratching my head ever since I purchased my off-contract phone, as to why I was getting ridiculously slow speedtest results (58 kb/s /38 kb/s with full green bars) avg. I'm not sure if everyone did what I did but I took the sim card out of my N1 and activated the phone w/ T-mobile by calling in the IMEI. Turns out my N1 data plan (according to the service rep) was for the 3g service and the NS apparently uses a newer 4g service. The rep made the change and told me it should go into effect in about 2 hours and I've just rec'd a text stating that my web plan has been changed. Going to wait to run the test a bit later tonight to see if I can pull in faster speeds with speedtest. If you aren't getting the speeds you think you should here in the US with optimal signal, a call to Tmobile to verify that you the correct. Going to activate the sim card that came with the phone just to be on the safe side too. Hope this helps anyone out there reading this
UPDATE! Man I feel stupid lol but that seems to have done the trick. Just pulled 1542 kbps/ 376kbps. Should I expect higher? Just looked at the Tmobile website and Android Mobile Web - Unlimited has been changed to 4G Web- Unlimited.
Just a note: NS can not use 4G

From what I understand, it can benefit from 4G to the extent the 3G network it would otherwise use is slower than what it is internally capable of handling, it just can't take full advantage because its hardware antenna is limited to a 7.2 mbps transfer rate.
Back again
I just did the same test and now I'm pullin in 400kbps/ 376 kbps. I guess I'm just not in a good area Will try again tomorrow in a different part of the house. TY for the info everyone.

Not entirely correct. While it doesn't boast full hspa its capable of higher than standard 3G speeds by using the 4g network. However unless using a custom rom you won't be able to see when it's on hspa.

I can pull 1840/590 frequently.

The Nexus One can also pull data off the HSPA+ data network (mine was averaging 4Mb/s after T-Mo upgraded my area).
My Nexus S can't seem to pull nearly that amount though. I need to pull out my N1 and test both in the same location to see if network performance has deteriorated in my area overall, or if the NS just isn't hauling the load properly.
Others have reported success in increasing data speeds with a call to T-Mo and changing to 4G account type in other threads here, so the theory is sound, assuming you're on an old account with some bad data plan. I clearly wasn't, based on my N1's performance, but the N1 was my first T-Mo phone/sim.
I had sort of the same issue. I was on a mytouch 3g data plan with my nexus s for 3 weeks and one day the data on my phone stopped working but I could still make calls. I called T-Mobile and the rep upgraded me to the 4g plan and its been working ever since.

I am both happy and sad to report that after some minimal testing, my Nexus S is getting the same download speeds as my Nexus One when using the same sim card in the same location off the same speedtest.net servers. I am getting around 2990Kb/s on both phones down, 2000 up. This is happy since it shows no hardware issues with the NS as I had originally thought.
It is sad because T-Mo used to serve up around 3800-4000Kb/s in this area. Not that in most real world uses, even tethering, that there's much difference.
the Nexus S just cant pull higher than 7.2 down HSPA+ is more about the backend
I have thought about making the call but I'm afraid that tmobile might make me switch to the "third party phone" plan for $30 when I pay $25 for unlimited data with my G1 plan. plus I would have to add a text plan and I would end up pay about $20 more than I do now.
I've been getting 3mb down since they upgraded my area and I'm on android unlimited web plan.
I just called T-mobile for the second time and asked to add the 4G web plan and the rep. told me that my device was not a 4G device and for that reason the 4G plan could not be added.
Is there really a difference between Android web and 4G web? or is it just name? I'm going to find out. Tomorrow I will borrow my brother's SIM card (from his G2), and do some speed tests.

Wtf? The most I've gotten was 3Mbps in Brooklyn.

11GB data on T-Mobile, haven't been throttled -- why?

So I've noticed that this month my data speeds have not been throttled and I am currently at 11.28 GB of data used. Current tethered speed test results are about 4-6 Mbps up d/l and 2-3 Mbps u/l. When I first went over the 5GB I did receive a text stating that my speeds will be slowed, and also the activity tab in My Device states this as well.
Anyone have any idea why I am still be getting regular speeds? I remember my previous months the speed was unbearably slow after 5GB, but something didn't trigger the throttle this time it seems. I remember when I went over 5GB initially it was a week into my cycle, I was doing tethered video streaming on my laptop overnight and in the morning noticed I had went from 2 GB to 8+. Wonder if that had an effect?

Yup u will probably get throttled soon. I think. Its because used like 6gb in one day.

I don't know about T-Mobile, but here in canada, I have Unlimited data plan with Wind Mobile, they also state on their website about fair usage policy and etc... Once when I asked them about the throttling my speed, they said, because Wind is a new player in Canada, they are trying to gain as many customers and hence they would not stop me from doing anything I want.
Well, now I do exactly what I am supposed to do, turned my phone into HotSpot, connected my Atrix to my G2 through WIFI HotSpot, have my laptop hooked up and ofcourse continuous internet connection on G2 itself, have used about 10GB so far for this month, and I get around 3M Up and 1.1M Down speed...
Enjoying my G2... It ROCKS!!!
If I recall it correctly, you also have unlimited data plan by T-Mobile, only cap is if you exceed 5GB per month, your speed will be reduced, right???
I've gone over the 5GB cap several times on my G2 with T-Mobile. Gotten the text notification but didn't notice a significant drop in speed. Still averaged about 3-5M down.
Running CM 7 if that matters.
It's simple, sometimes the throttling just doesn't take effect. I've seen numerous threads about this and have experienced it first hand myself.

My Samsung Galaxy S2 3G Speeds Are Very Slow

I got really happy today when I discovered XDA developers through Google. There seems to be a wealth of information on this forum.
I recently purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2 in India and I have to say, the quality exceeded my expectations, seriously.
I also signed up for Airtel's 3G service, and the service was working fine for the first 2-3 days with speeds exceeding ~3mbps (>3000kbps).
However, here is where my problem started:
Just a couple of days back I was simultaneously downloading a bunch of free Apps from the Marketplace and somewhere in the middle my 3G speeds dropped. I seriously don't know what happened. I have the flexible package from Airtel which gives 1.25 gigabytes, and according to my phone, I've used only 550 megabytes at that time.
Now, my speeds are locked at 40kbps (according to Speedtest and web browsing experience) and I don't if it is my phone having the issue or if it is my SIM or Airtel Prepaid account (I am 99.9% percent I have not exceeded the balance or else talktime would have already been deducted by now), or a technical glitch on Airtel's server-end.
I have tried disabling / enabling fast dormancy, disabling / enabling HSPDA, configuring WCDMA Only, and manually configuring the Airtel settings. Yet, none of that worked.
I am feeling very frustrated and would appreciate any help in addressing this matter. Thanks in advance.
There are a couple of Indian specific threads that you'd be better off getting help in. This is the biggest one...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995752
I would like to read feedback from folks around the world as well.
I've already gone through the mentioned Indian thread and I have to say, it requires a moderator.
Help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
same problem on t-mobile
i bought the sgs2 2 months ago , i live in the us now and i bought it unloked from amazon. i put my simcard from tmobile in it , previously was using a nexus one. i have unlimited data plan but only get edge speeds on it which is very frustrating. on the nexus i was getting 3g speeds. one time while i was driving (i live in florida) i managed to get a 3g signal but the speeds were still in the edge range. most of the time i`m using wifi, but since i`m paying for the data plan, id like for my phone to be able to use it.
if anybody would be able to enlighten me about how to go about my problem i would appreciated it.

You won't get 3g speeds on tmobile because sgs2 doesn't have the necessary tmobile 3g bands. If you want 3g and hspa+ speeds thru sgs2, switch to att.

Unfortunately for us (My SGS2 will arrive later today) T-mobile uses different 3G/4G bands than most other carriers worldwide.... so we are stuck with EDGE (2G)
On a side note how are the speeds when browsing on EDGE? Is it painfully slow? If so try downloading Opera mini it should help quite a bit since it renders everything server side
thanks
thanks for the prompt answers , after a little research i`ve found out exactelly the same thing, that i have to switch to at&t to get better speeds and i probably will.
yes , surfing on 2g is horribly slow and my 70$ unlimited plan is useless
just did a speedtest 133kbps/down 94k up , ridiculous :'(
Any suggestions or advices for the 3G problems
HI, I am also facing the same problem of 3G of low speeds any updates regarding this?
Any chance your provider might be throttling your speeds based on usage behaviour?
Took mine to service center, having the same simptoms as described by you, the resolution was: faulty motherboard -> replace. Not a firmware issue...a hardware one.

Method for blazing Speeds on ATT using Wimax.

As most using GS2 on Att the data speeds are poor.
I have mine on Att $50 prepaid unlimited all, using an infuse Imei.
Data speeds are still poor (avg 12-1500kbps).
ANY phone on Att "4G" performs poorly.
So, what I did (initially as a temporary measure) was get a Sprint MiFi portable hotspot ($35mo), carry with me and run off their 4G. (My work has me on the move around the chicago area...it's worth it).
I can tell you, data absolutely FLIES...(significantly better than the Evo 4g btw, as your at the mercy of tower positioning. The Evo on the Mifi performs way better also).
In the 10days I've had it, I've NEVER gone to 3G.
I'm considering just sticking with this arrangement when SGS2 breaks here if the phone's are dumbed down in any way. Good thing is the data reports to Att are virtually Zero on my dumbphone plan at 6-8M's/mo.....as I have unlimited data on Sprint.
So yeah its $85mo total for me.
SO, for those who really prioritize network speed (and why tether this brilliant device to a 3rd rate network), you might consider trying it for 30days. Don't need a current Sprint account.
Makes unlimited surfing and tethering movies etc fun again!
(suggestion tho if you do: have an extra phone and MiFi battery, and wall charger!).
I agree that the 4G speeds are not much faster than good 3G, no matter which settings are tried. Glad to know Sprint is fast, the competition is sure to cause AT&T to increase their speeds to keep up.
That being said, you may want to rename this thread. I was expecting some new method to improve AT&T speeds when I clicked it. Something like "AT&T is hopelessly slow, tether with Sprint instead" would make more sense.
For me, I can't be bothered to carry a MiFi with me at all times and pay another company money each month. I'll just do the best I can with AT&T and hope they improve the HSPA+ speeds in my area. I get between 1 and 2.5 mbps just about anywhere so its not unbearable. The real killer is the slowness to switch from 3G to H+ every time I try to use the data connection...
Ah, your right about title.
I guess it's method to obtain fast speeds while on Att!

It's sounds like something's wrong with your settings or SIM. I live in a 3G area and pull between 2-3MB down. When I'm traveling in a HSPA+ area I get between 4-8MB down. I'm on a post-paid data for non-Smartphones plan. I actually do the opposite of the OP. I use my SGS2 to tether my tablet and download and watch Hulu with no stuttering.

I got similar speeds on my old Captivate (although it was HSPA, not HSPA+). Friends of mine with the Inspire get the same speeds as well. I think its the area. I live in Central New Jersey and according to PCMag's mobile network speed test, this area is about the worst there is for AT&T speeds:
http://www.pcmag.com/Fastest-Mobile-Networks-2011
What area's are you getting between 4-8 in? Have you ever tried in New Jersey?
I've got 2-4kbps.....but it's rare. It's usually 12-15 give or take. Also, ping time on Att seems really slow, usually double the time of Evo.
I've tried new sim twice.
2nd time went to an Att guy I know personally, showed him the SGS2 (normally I wouldn't cause they'd take it to the computer and not allow it on dumbphone plan)....he made some adjustment in the system for me gave me a new sim card....and results were the same.
Speedtest doesn't reflect real world results anyway.
Take a site....say crackberry.com....at its 4bar best Att will download the whole site in 35-40 sec. MiFi is consistently will do it at 15sec.
It's always about 3 times faster. For a guy who needs data on the go, that's big.

[Q] Tmobile-UK Data speed

I've recently purchased the Atrix on Tmobile here in the UK.
I'm still running the stock rom (froyo 2.2.2) and have carried out some speed tests.
Download speeds max out at ~350kbs!
This seems incredibly disappointing as my Blade on the 3 network gets much faster speeds.
My question is:
If I unlock and update to a gingerbread based rom will my data access speed improve?
i.e Have tmobile in UK crippled data transfer speeds on the stock rom?
I would be grateful for any info.
Regards
Sam
I'm on T-Mo Uk on an Atrix too and that's decent speeds for 3G/HSDPA I've tried a few different rims and radio flashes but doesn't make much if any difference, so guessing T-Mo cap the data rate. When I first got the phone in May I was lucky if I got 100 kb/s. 3 or 4 phone calls later to T-mo and they realised I was setup on the wrong data tariff, so maybe worth checking that?

Thanks Chaz,
I do think this is sim related rather than the network though.
My son is now using an old T-Mo G1. Ran the speed test on his phone which has a T-Mo PAYG sim in it. Results of 3 runs are:
Down Up
1541 402
1714 414
1533 344
Now this is 3-4 x faster than my contract sim I got with my Atrix (and still half the speed I'm getting on 3's network).
Why would the atrix be performing so much worse than the ageing G1?
Next I will test PAYG sim in the atrix.......

Hi Sam
You are not on HSDPA (despite what the phone might report). You are only connecting to T-Mobile's normal 3g network which runs at around 0.4Mbps... HSDPA will run at anything up to 3.6Mbps, though more realistically 1-2Mbps.
All Android handsets bought directly from T-Mobile should come with the ability to connect to the HSDPA network (though I am of course refering to the SIM card - all Atrixs in theory can connect to HSDPA). If you bought the handset through a third party company (such as dial-a-phone) then they may supply the handset with a "none Android" tarrif SIM card.
Read about it here on the T-Mob forums... you may be able to speak with T-Mob technical support to get the ability to connect to HSDPA. Good luck!
Thanks for the info surrealjam.
I bought this from the T-Mo website and it didn't mention capped internet speeds.
Interestingly my wife recently (this month) switched to a sim only contract after 2 years and speedtest on her T-Mo G2 is stuck at 357kbs. I remember when she first got the phone that it had a faster internet connection than our landline ~ 2.5Mbs.
Looks like they have tweaked her settings too.
I'm off to phone technical support. thanks again.
.......
Having phoned technical support on 150 they have enabled HSDPA for my internet access.
Job done, thanks again surrealjam.
I reckon you should give them a phone Chaz

Sam
No problem, Sam - I love a happy ending. There's no way to say that without sounding smutty these days... shame.

I think we had our wires crossed here I was giving speeds in kb/s and you gave kbps above ? lol
My speeds are around 1900kbps down and 400kbps up, which is around 400-450 kb/s (or 1.8-1.9mb).
As I mentioned before I was capped too and a few calls to T-Mo sorted it for me as well.
Glad you got it sorted out too
