[Q] Newbie - Help with Mail - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am total Newbie to android (from iphone 3g) and learning every time I use the phone or browse forums online. Loving the phone so far (its so damn fast)
A few questions in my mind on the mail App:
1. I want to use one consolidated mail app for all my accounts (exchange, gmail with activesync, yahoo & hotmail). Is this possible? I see there is a separate app for Yahoo but I want to use just one app for all. Also I am unable to configure hotmail using activesync. Can anyone please post the settings?
2. I see that the mail app doesnt maintain a tree structure, I need to click at the top to change accounts instead of going back just like I am used to on my iphone. Can this be changed or I need to start getting used to this?
Appreciate any help

I use Gmail for all my accounts. On your PC, go into your Gmail user settings. You can import all kinds of different accounts from there. The beauty of this is its seamless integration with Android OS. Once you set it up you'll never have to repeat the process again. If you wipe your phone or switch phones, you log in and you're good to go.

Thanks for your suggestion. However I would like to seperate out my accounts and dont want to import them into gmail.
Is there any other way to get this done or is it something I need to live with (which i am not very happy about)

Your accounts will be labeled separately. You can color code them and filter your folders too. You should give it a try. It's very reliable.

Ok. I will give it a shot and see. Thanks.
BTW, any inputs on getting yahoo mail and hotmail on activesync working in the default mail app?

+1...?
Also, if you set up gmail to get your mail from your yahoo accounts, how frequently will it get/check for your yahoo messages? Can you set it up so that your replies look like it came from your yahoo account?

Gmail allows you to link all your various e-mail accounts together and view them as one instead of logging into several accounts or inboxes. Those with data contracts wll likely have no dificulties using gmail on the go. However, it seems many folk cannot connect if they are using a pre-paid or payg account with their telecom provider. For these people you currently have a Java Applet version, wifi when available, or logging in via the browser (expensive). Hence the need for an application that gives the same look and functionality as that enjoyed by data conacted folk.Mike

So my question is, "then I should be able to get all my email using the pocket outlook configured to this gmail account right?"
the gmail app that I am refering to is a small client that allows for gmail to push messages to your handheld device. I used it on my Blackberry and it was great. I had heard that google was going to eventually release the same type of client for PPC. Also, I use google apps so I do not have a gmail account. i have a [email protected] account that uses gmail.

because the pop3 sync is hard on the battery. (unless you accept the defaults to sync every 2 hours.) the gmail app is not hard on the battery. at least it wasn't on the Blackberry.
I'd like to know this as well.. I hardly use the gmail java midlet because it just isnt too great. If they had a native app like google maps or something, then I'm sure they can make it much better.

That's the theory - try it out on the PC

Have you considered logging into gmail, using the help function there, and then asking google this question? Seems they'd be the ones to know, not us.
You could even inform everyone here about what their response is after you do so.

Gmail sync for items as ther arrive ?

Hi all.
Is there a way to set up Gmail account on HERO to get emails straight on me mobile and not have gmail to check every 5mins for them ?
It really annoys me that Im not able to get it done and have to wait for the mobile to sync every 5minutes...
I had nokia e71 before and it was working like a dream..and not to have Google system and not be able to do that???...
Thanks for any help
I take it you are not using the Gmail app, and are using HTC's email app?
Google sync now support ActiveSync for Exchange, so you can set up Gmail as it it were an exchange server, and have your email pushed out to you.
See here. The instructions don't include Android, but you should be able to work out what you need to do from the iPhone set up.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks,
I have one exchange account setup already and it looks like I can not set any more ?
There is this 'google mail' app on my hero and it is the one that is set for gmail at the moment.I can not change any setting in it (or can I ? I had a look and could not find anything)

The Gmail app does get email pushed to it - there's no setting because that's how it always works.

Unified email

Unified email
Hey everyone! my friend and i have hd2's but he has 6 email accounts and he was asking me is there a way to make all his emails come into one inbox like on blackberries...i suppose its called "unified email"
ive been using windows mobile for a year now and i cant seem to find a way to "unify" the emails..is there a way for this to be done?
thank you
btw he has the stock tmobile rom,
which would be windows phone 6.5

I don't know of a specific way to do this on WinMo; however, a work around would be to setup a GMail account (or Hotmail, Yahoo, whichever) and configure that to download email from the six accounts.
Once you have done this, you would only need to setup the Gmail (or other) account on your phone and everything should all come down in one place.
Not really a cure, but a solution nonetheless.
Re: Unified Email
I've used Flexmail for this purpose. It can integrate yahoo, gmail, hotmail, and other types of POP mail accounts and send them to you via imap push. With Flexmail, you can set rules for incoming emails so that they automatically sort into folders on your phone. I like it a lot.

Flexmail was excellent when I used it on a Treo Pro. I've installed it on my HD2 and found it was not at all useable without a D-pad. I just couldn't get it to work right.

Gmail does everything you listed as well via pop, imap push, and exchange for free. If you use the exchange setup you can sync your calendar and contacts as well, works great.
Great recommendation by Franwella.
Hi,
I use Gmail for this too, works well.
using Gmail is the right solution. I'm using it and it's a lot confortable.
bye

Try this
thank you all for the responses...idk why i didnt think about this, although i have a similar set up lols!

HTC Mail widget.

Basically, its annoying me, its like i have two seperate emails, whilst only using one.
I have the big mail widget as i like it, scrolling up and down emails without opening the app etc....
BUT
it seems to run seperate the android one, as when i get email notification, for 1 email sent to my gmail account, i get two notifications, one from htc widget one from android google mail. then when i load up htc, all the emails i have previously read, are set as not read because i read them on the android app!
anyone now a work around, ?
Unlink your gmail app from the gmail account. This is google's Gmail app that was written seperatley from the standard mail application, thus the notifications are seperate.
Use only the HTC Mail application and sign both your standard mail and gmail accounts on to them (activate POP3 or IMAP on your gmail account and set it up using the same details you would normally use in Outlook or some other program). There is a guide to setting up gmail accounts in external clients somewhere in the gmail help pages here: http://mail.google.com/support/
Once that is done, and assuming you've unlinked your gmail application completely, you should have it working the way you want.
Don't setup Gmail via IMAP or POP. Use Google's Exchange server. Instructions in the following link. They're for Windows Mobile but they work just the same.

Don't sign out of gmail, that would stop the market working as well, just go to home>menu>settings>accounts and sync>google
untick mail.
personally, i go the other way and refuse to use HTC's travesty of a mail program...but that's just my personal opinion. Hope you get it working how you want it...

Will HD2 US do aol / yahoo push mail? I've looked at the manual and no mention?

I've looked all over..and can't find a section that mentions push mail from yahoo, aol, etc.
I'm coming from the iPhone so the push mail works on the Yahoo side and I believe on the aol side.
I know that MS exchange has push feature to the phone but what about the other standards? gmail?
I noticed on Cookies HT there is a push mail icon but that did not work (i take it that's for ms direct push?)
Lastly...is there a setting or app that allows ALL mail to send / receive vs just doing one account at a time (annoying)?
Thank you!
the microsoft direct push functionality (supported on ALL windows mobile devices in at least the past 3-4 years) works with ANY microsoft exchange server.
this means it will work for gmail (i am using it myself!) because google has the exchange server on their end. google itself provides a generic windows mobile tutorial on how to set it up and you can find a video guide on youtube specifically on how to set it up on a stock HD2 (technique should work on custom ROMs too). my only additional advice is to back up your contacts (either to microsoft myphone or using pimbackup) before proceeding because the google sync can also upload your contacts to google, and you don't want your contacts to get nuked in case something goes wrong during the initial sync. another potential confusion you might face is that you will see the labels set up on gmail as folders on your device's client. by default, syncing of folders is disabled, but you can go into "manage folders" under one of the menus when viewing your inbox on the device to pick the folders that you want to sync in addition to the inbox. finally, the first sync may take several minutes (even an hour) depending on the duration you have set up to sync (i use a setting for last one month worth of emails) and on your connection speed (try to use wifi for the first sync).
i don't know about yahoo or aol but if they support the microsoft exchange server on their side, then push email should theoretically work in these cases also.
all in all, i rather like the functionality because it is highly configurable. you can even set up "schedules" such that it works in push mode on, say, weekdays from noon to midnight and switch to, say, 4 hour poll mode while you are sleeping.
then again, i haven't experienced push email on any other device such as the black berry or iphone so my view point is rather limited.
Simply put yes. I have yahoo pop3 servive and get my yahoo mail just fine on the HD2

pop3 in "poll mode" is different from push email, which is what the OP was asking about.
however, for most practical purposes, pop3/imap in quick poll mode (like once every 5 minutes) is really not that bad, but it might adversely affect battery life.
i suppose poll mode is fine for most of us but some individuals/businessmen might rely on quick email delivery straight to their phone so its more logical to consider poll vs push as two separate technologies in discussions!
Do the folders selected to be sync with inbox will sync automatically?

Hi,
I was searching for this and thank you for letting me know how to do it! I didn't know there is a "manage folders" option until I scroll down (Din knew I can scroll down, lol)
By the way, as mentioned above, do the folders selected sync automatically? Will they appear on the mail tab?
Thank you.

you can create an exchange account using your gmail login,if you have it,otherwise you can create a new gmail account and use it for send/receive your mail in push:in gmail web page you must add your yahoo account for check and than configure the exchange as i explane!
pop3 is NOT push. There is a delay. Depends on when you have it checking.
As far as i know, the default windows mobile does NOT support push email for yahoo. If you want push email, use seven like i did. Worked fine on my hd2.
http://community.seven.com/main.php
It will allow push email from yahoo and many others. It is NOT an email app where you read them in seven, but a tool to push it to your phones normal email program. (what you would be using now)
I have been using it for a long time and had no problem.
