ok i'm thinking of getting one of these eken tablets i was just wondering has anyone got one does it already have full root access and are there anyways to install other roms.
if not can anyone give me a hand on how to go about trying to root a device i imagine it has hardly any lock down on it as its just a cheap tablet.

well i have no experience finding out how to root a device, but i am more than happy messing around in a command line and cooking my own roms. but tbh i wouldn't be surprised if this came with a 100% unlocked boot loader and possibly 100% rooted. so hopefully it should just be a simple job of cooking up some roms, well lets just hope

wait one sec are you buying the ipad fake or the white one because i would have thought both would hopefully have the same bootloader hoepfully unlocked. but the ipad fake has a 1.2ghz if i have read correctly
I received my unbranded m001 yesterday. unfortunately it isn't unlocked. But I'm working on figuring out the boot loader mechanism. ADB doesn't seem to find it when I connect it to my computer via the supplied USB cable but I'm still hopeful. I'll post what I can figure out.

is yours the ipad fake or the white one? and does it have market on it?
Had I know of the Ipad fake I would have opted for it ,.but no, its the white one. It does have a market app but not the Android market. So the market enabler or a custom firmware will be needed to make this device really shine. Of course they might release a firmware update when it hits a more mass market status but I wouldn't count on it.

I was wrong about it not having root access. Seems the file system is wide open. I went ahead and made a su command in /system/bin for good measure but I am still having trouble running programs that require root level access to the system. USB debugging is on but I'm not sure its running.

i've been wondering if we could find any market .apks that would enable us to use the market, i mean would be lush to flash custom roms anyway to get into boot loader? like holding down one of the buttons when turning it on?

I've sent an e-mail to Eken regarding future software updates...and they completely ignored it and sent me a request to fill out a sale form (how many units I want, address, etc) and they will provide me with "rock bottom price with high quality"
I'm on the edge of getting the M001 just to play around with because it's so cheap, but the Archos 7 Home Tablet has a few features that are just so tempting and the price isn't too much higher (199$).
To those of you who have this already: Does this device support multitouch? The descriptions say it's got a capacitive touch screen, but Chinese knockoff product descriptions are always very sketchy.

i think i read somewhere that one of them had multi touch but then one contradicted that and said it had a resistive touch screen, but tbh multi touch isn't always that much better just as long as its a pretty good quality resistive it isn't that much more work than using a capacitive
Well, if the M001 has a capacitive multitouch-capable screen it would appeal to me more than the higher quality, more storage space Archos 7HT. The A7HT has a resistive screen, 8GB of NAND, 7-8 hours of battery life. M001 has 2 hours battery, 2GB storage, and an unknown touch screen

I think I would prefer resistive...on a device like this, I suspect I would like the ability to use a stylus....capacitive stylus kind of suck IMHO.

yeah resistive could be nicer as its more precise (i think) meaning it could be used easier as a note pad type thing, but i do prefer typing u gotta see my hand writing LOL.
This Tablet Im looking at costs the same and has twice the features. Granted the processor isnt quite as strong. But wouldnt this have been a nice alternative to what I bought I think after christmas once I can save some money I might pick one of these babies up its called theKobo Vox. If anyone does pick one up as an alternative, Let me know how it runs I would like to know wether or not its worth it. I would post the link but It wont let me because I dont have that ability yet. Im working though trust me.
It has a slower processor, but it has an sd card slot. What are these other features that the Fire lacks?
Was just looking at specs and think I would rather stay with the kindle fire

How is the kobo vox better than the nook color (which at least has a small developer community)?
Don't get me wrong, I would like to see kobo/borders succeed (ie I was at some point interested in buying one of their eInk readers), but the kobo vox (like the eInk device I was interested in) was too little too late.
12 months ago the Kobo Vox might have had a chance ... now though?
Nook Tablet cant even get kexec because they have a locked and signed bootloader. Meaning no chance for custom kernels or a way to load a custom kernel on top of the standard one. The Kobo Vox has volume buttons. which is nice. easier recovery navigation/button combos

The VOX already has hardware features that the kindle and nook are both lacking. Also, it is running almost clean android so its a familiar interface we all know. Granted if this tablet survives (which I hope it does) The next logical step would be huge updates to the processor and ram in the device. while the nook and kindle both would have minor adjustments to the processor and ram and adding features that should have been included in the initial release. I do love my Kindle don't get me wrong I feel like the community here can do some great things with it but its just lacking some major features and Amazon came on a little apple-esque with it. It felt like if there was no root it was almost entirely proprietary.

It is essentially the SAME HARDWARE as the Nook COLOR!!!!!! But without a dev community.
Too little, too late.
I think the biggest advantage the Fire has over this device (and many others) is the sheer number of them on the market.
Many of the (real, lol) developers I know are getting orders for applications directed at the Fire. With the amount of market segmentation for android devices, finding a 'target' is a big deal for people.

Only way to get a nook color outside the US is importing it afaik
This is the same price (against the price charged by an importer) and you can just buy it on the high street (UK).

And the OP seems to be from Canada ... where he can get the Nook Color for $150 or less (depending on the available deals).

I personally thinking about getting the Nook HD which looks really great... but then again, the Nexus 7 has a front-facing camera. I'm still thinking about it.
Looks awesome, if you're a tinkerer. Assuming it's rootable and there are good ROMs for it. I don't think it's going to do so well with the average consumer though. B&N just doesn't have the clout to provide the best user experience. The price alone is pretty compelling though. Yes, having no camera is sad, how often do you really use it though? Plus the Nook has an SD Card slot which is so cherished by many.
I'm considering purchasing my first tablet, and I'm on the fence between the Nook HD+ and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9. The biggest influencing factor for me is how much/often it gets quality ROM releases, which is impossible to predict. If I knew the Nook would get good ROMs, the price would be the deciding factor. I would jump on it instantly. Right now I'm leaning toward the Nook, and hoping the ROMs will come.
The HD+ looks great! Lets hope for an unlocked bootloader. the $269 for a 16GB model makes it a winner in the 9" category.
{I do hope that they 'll make available to European buyers this time}
Pluses for me:
1) Price - both the HD and HD+
2) Relatively light weight
3) Expandable micro-SD storage
Minuses:
1) (and a big one) proprietary connector!
2) +/- locked bootloader (probably like Nook Tablet). Not impossible to work around, just harder.
Lack of front-facing camera (on the HD+ especially) is a meh for me. Would make sense if the Nooks had a built-in Skype-style app.
Just my $0.02.
New BN Tablets
A Mighty "Hooray"!!!
I actually cannot believe that my long wait for an affordable HD tablet with an 8.9 (actually 9 inch) screen is now here courtesy of BN!
Having a screen that was the size equivalent of a "trade paper (back)" has always been my goal for both reading and video purposes.
Under $300., with excellent performance stats, and with at least ICS 4.0 makes my mouth water. No camera is simply not an issue for me and with my Galaxy Nexus, tethering is a breeze for those few times when I might need cellular access.
I cannot imagine what a rooted version with JB would be like. I would want at bare minimum to have this be dual bootable, especially in light of the "potential" of the new BN video service.
Of course one needs to see some thorough reviews first but this is the first unit to meet all of my internalized criteria to move me off of my original and rooted (dual boot) NC. Hardware "dreams" can all too frequently become major disappointments!
I am currently running both 1.4.2 and CM 7.2 with both dual booted from the internal eMMc. I do almost all of my book reading with it. It is a tolerable form to use (size wise) in terms of my personal reading experience (also video). Have never liked it for magazine viewing or browsing.
9.7-10.1 have always been larger than I wanted to tote around and this new HD+ now has nailed my personal "sweetspot"!
Looking forward to seeing how it performs in the real world and how quickly it can be rooted and modified.

Now I just don't know, I think I will wait and see if it can be rooted. I use my Kindle app way too often
to not have it anymore. My rooted Nook Color will have to suffice, I'm sure that the devs will get on this one soon!

It has the same weak point as the previous Nooks (which I have been happy with for 2 years)
How hard is it to add a Microphone (for Skype, Free Phone Calls, Voice Search etc)?
That would make it perfect, without a need for another device.

B&N claims the proprietary connector lets the tablet charge faster, if that eases your conscience. But we all know it's just a way to get people to spend on accessories.
my only qualms is the lack of a camera....
if they are truly trying to target Amazon and try to compete they need to include a Camera on the tablet at least....not necessarily the HD but c'mon...9" tab without a camera....a lot of people won't buy it simple because of that...i'm not one of those people but it still will deter customers...
other than that...price and looks and specs are all top notch imo and if i do upgrade to a bigger tablet i will probably go with the HD+

The only positive of this one is that the previous super-duper multipin connector broke so easily that heck, I'm happy to try another type of connector if it actually might not break off after a few weeks of use.
Overall though...if the boot loader can be cracked (presuming there is one, which I suspect there will be since B&N just doesn't get they'd be a lot better off incentivizing people to buy product rather than attempting to force them to when they just don't have the inventory to compete) $299 for a 32 GB 256 DPI is somewhat ridiculous. Glad I haven't bitten on the Nexus 7, and we'll have to see how the big Kindle with the small data plan looks, but B&N may have just done it again on the performance/price point game even if this is never going to appeal to the plug it in and turn it on market.
What's a chance of this thing getting a CM10? I want a good high res 9inch android tablet with sd slot for a while now. Well I would prefer SDXC over microSD though. If this one have lock bootloader, then what can we expect? Decrapified ICS maybe?

Anyone know if any of the new Nooks have BT - seems that they will be missing a lot if they do not. Samsung, IPad, Google, etc. mostly all have Bluetooth.

Many sources I found are saying that they do indeed have bluetooth.
Unless you had developers mad scrambling to code up a new locked bootloader, I would assume the new nook tablet HD will come with the same bootloader as the one on the nook tablet that is already out now, which has the bootloader already cracked. If that is the case then it would be ready for customizing with a custom firmware as soon as it is released.
From the way some of the developers are working away with the cyanoboot app for the nook tablet I would assume the new nook tablet HD will come with the same bootloader, their has been lots of activity up in the nook tablet XDA forums recently with that app.
I am seriously thinking of getting the new nook tablet HD when it comes out here in a few months just for the hardware specs.

Bumping those threads over in cyanogenmod showing some interest in getting a forum up for the nook tablet and the new nook tablet HD would help get things rolling for this new device. I feel this new nook tablet HD has lots of potential with others helping out to become the next new device to develop on, like how the nook color took off last year.

I'm guessing u-boot (the bootloader) on the Nook HD will be locked down, just as the NT was, and that they will have made bauwks' hack impossible. I think the security tends to improve (from their point of view) with each iteration, so I assume bauwks' bootloader bug-fix will have been undone.
I happen to believe the N7 is a far, FAR superior tablet option for just about everyone. IMO, the Nook and KFire are a bit like selling you a sports car with the tires removed and brake pedal welded down and marketing it as a four seat, five-speaker CD-player (that only plays BN and Amazon CDs). And Amazon's "radio" plays ads when you turn it on.
This is the reason I've never bought (indeed, never used) a NookTablet, and have no intention of buying or using a locked KFire either. I find the artificial restriction to use the product to its full capability to be extremely condescending and cynical to the customer. And I see the locked bootloader as a major design flaw. Yes, Amazon and BN need have to have a business model to make money, and I support their right to do so. But notice that Google actually trusts its customers -- even encourages them-- to experiment and push the boundries of what they think you can do with YOUR computer that you bought with YOUR money. It's almost like Google actually believe in themselves as a company... trusting that they have a good software experience and content offerings that beat the competition. And they may be right. Because, it's funny-- with all the hackers out there, I haven't yet heard of any N7 (or any device) owner who elected to "close down" their tablets with an effort to try to run BN's or Amazon's OS so they can experience the fully-limited, tightly-controlled e-book experience.
Anyway, the above is just my opinion at the moment. Who knows, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised and the Nook HDs will be unlocked... but I doubt it.

Well spoken. The only thing that holds me back from getting a Nexus though is the limited storage space. But others might not be so picky on storage. I just love the additional storage space on the nook series and that they give you that microSD slot. 64 GB storage on top of the 8 GB on the nook color I have right now.
I am the kind of kid that needs at least 100 full music albums and 20 or so more movies on the go, and riding on the school bus does not supply wifi for that cloud of theirs. Yet I know I am the minority. Give me moar storage, lol. I know lots of others living in rural areas and/or traveling in parts of the world not covered by wi-fi also find that extra storage given by the included microSD card slot is a must have. And that is TONS of people.

So nexus 7 is also trying to shut out a part of their business to others by limiting storage on their top devices, and not including an internal storage slot. I am sure they know that or they would of released a device to include more additional storage for others.

You are right on that locked boot-loader, did not think of that. I am sure they will submit a patch on that locked boot-loader to defeat that hack. Such a shame. There might be some tablet being developed right now by Google that will give others the option to add storage and the newest android builds, I just do not understand why its taking so long or if they are deliberately holding back on releasing such of a device to force others into "cloud" use. I am sure it does not cost that much to implement that hardware on a device, I would buy it even at a few dollars more.

Yes, it will have Bluetooth. Here is a specs list straight from B&N, LINK, section 1.2 - 1.5 is all most people will care about.

I believe it's the 2nd one. Google purposely trying to force customer to use cloud storage. The problem here is that we also have greedy telecom on the other side that will nickle and dime your for every GB if they could and they have no incentive to improve their network capacity & coverage. We also have a weak FCC that don't do much. FCC should have done away with itself license spectrum and force the telecom to be a dumb pipe and every one just be like MVNO. That way we end up w/ more competitive market rather than oligopoly market. Sure if we have affordable unlimited LTE everywhere right now, then cloud storage make a lot of sense. And that if we aren't gonna saturate the bandwidth. Imagine even if everyone pulling movies and music over the LTE network in metropolitan area, the network would suck so hard that everyone will be pulling less than 1mbps. I don't think Google will have a new tablet anytime soon or w/ removable storage for that matter. Not until google realize that they are fighting with the wireless telecom and they have to be a telecom themself.

Just got done talking to Amazon and discovered that I'm still in the window to be able to return the OUYA and get a full refund, so I'm taking that opportunity rather than continue to hope that the OUYA team will decide to deliver on the open console they promised.
After seeing how others have been treated and being ignored myself, I simply have no faith in their ability to deliver. Instead I see only more of the same, and instead of problems being fixed I see OUYA choosing to release version 2.0. If they'd screw over the kick-start backers, why wouldn't they screw over us too? The lack of communication, lack of transparency, lack of honesty make me think the OUYA have no future going forward and no vision beyond chasing the next customer at the expense of current ones.
Why would I stick around? To throw more good money after bad? Even if the community manages to paper around most of the issues plaguing the console, it will be at the expense of the console functionality--being able to just buy a game and play it, instead everything will eventually be through the Google Play Store (in which case what is the point of buying OUYA games?) or there will be all sorts of alternative stores trying to deliver OUYA Discovery store games without the OUYA team's blessings and that will only work for so long before it gets categorized as piracy...
What future is there here?
And please don't say XBMC, because one of the reasons I'm throwing in the towel is because I am unable to get my USB drive with all my videos recognized on the OUYA. That being the case, it's not even good to me as a Media Center device. Not when there are much better supported options available that I don't have to hack to make work all the time.

I for one am planning on using my OUYA as a paperweight. It looks quite good.
In all seriousness, I bought this never intending to bother with stock firmware, so when I get back to school I'll toss CM10.1 on it and use it to complement an ailing Logitech Revue. As a kickstarter backer though, I can't exactly return my unit, and I don't know that I'd feel good about selling it to anyone. Neat idea, awful execution on the software side.
That's a rather long post to tell us you just don't like your unit. Mine works fine. No problems with XBMC either. Playing across from my 4 terabyte home server with no issues.
BAXY Launcher as a replacement, live wallpapers, music and more. Kind of funny that you're returning yours because software that hasn't been released officially for it yet doesn't work right. That doesn't sound funny to you?

Well I differ slightly here. With exception of the USB bug, limited usability of the touchpad, and overscan issues (which AFAIK never effected me) I honestly thought the default launcher was pretty good.
The Discover menu could have been cleaned up a bit, but for a new console with a limited repository of software, it was pretty good at showing off what was available. Some of the lists were a bit redundant, but that was understandable considering at this point we're all playing the same games. I would have expected the lists to diverge quite severely as newer games were added.
I would have liked to see a list for games which had been bought by percentages, a queued downloads section somewhere so you knew what was already selected for download and a way to see how much was in the pipe left to come and a place for all the games you'd purchased previously so you could add them back in to your library more easily once you started building it up. Would have even been a good idea to add a wishlist option so you could remember games you'd tried in the past but decided to buy at a later time for some reason. Otherwise the interface really didn't offend me all that much.
It was hardware bugs and usability issues that bothered me more than anything.
And while I'm sure the community will be able to fix most of these, I feel that in doing so the OUYA stops being a game console and becomes an Android computer.

Who says that I didn't like my OUYA? When it worked it was the most amazing thing in the world. I could have both games and my media all with the same device. I liked it so much that despite having intended it as an emulation\xbmc box I began buying games. Does that sound like someone who doesn't like their OUYA?

Not everyone has a NAS of that type. I do however have a 1TB WB USB drive formatted to NTFS, a 2TB Seagate USB drive also formatted to NTFS, and a 3TB Toshiba USB drive formatted to FAT32. Since the last update my OUYA likes none of them. Before the last few updates I was able to make use of all of them by powering off the OUYA, plugging them in and upon restarting doing a system reset (returning to factory defaults).
Then I too was able to enjoy xbmc from my OUYA and was blown away by how well the video playback was. The problem is that I am unable to get my USB drive to mount ever since the latest update. And having to do a system reset every time I moved the OUYA somewhere to show it off and having to readd all my xbmc libraries and all my games got old after the third time. Worse was when mandatory updates hit and required me to do a reset because the update unmounted the USB somehow. Worse yet was when I posted about it on the OUYA twitter account and was completely ignored.

Perhaps if that was why I'm returning the OUYA it would seem funny. Unfortunately for your strawman argument I am not returning the OUYA because it doesn't run alpha software without issues; I am returning my OUYA because it is missing basic functionality in the USB port and unable to mount USB drives. Amazon has listed as my reason for return "defective" hardware.
Without being able to mount the USB drive I am unable to use my OUYA for its purpose. By breaking the USB mounting as they have, the OUYA team have rendered the console unfit for its purpose. Is that clear enough?

If it did work, don't you think it might have just broke in the last update. They wouldn't include a USB port if they didn't want everyone to use USB HDDs. It broke, but they'll fix it. Can't see returning it because of one update bug.

I'm rocking the hell out of my OUYA, with the Play store installed, sdcard enabled, and controller support becoming the norm I plan to be playing mine for a loooong time. It's a much more elegant solution than a phone or tablet with hdmi out. Yeah the OUYA store has a crappy selection, but that is about the only knock against it I have. Your loss man.

It's not just one update bug--before this to get it to work took a lot of jumping through hoops. And who says they'll get to fixing it in a reasonable time frame? Look how long it took for them to fix the overscan bug, people were waiting three or four months with an OUYA that couldn't play most games.
Maybe if I'd at least gotten a response or a promise that they were working on it, I might stay, but the silence from OUYA has been very telling. Amazon already refunded my debit card, so I don't think I have a choice at this point, even if I found out there was an update this afternoon that fixed everything.

The stock launcher is horrible. I didn't think it was bad until I tried out BAXY, now I know it is utter crap. The BAXY developers have made a better launcher in 2 weeks than OUYA did in a year.
And while I'm sure the community will be able to fix most of these, I feel that in doing so the OUYA stops being a game console and becomes an Android computer.

Hell, Sony borks an update on the PS3 a few times a year, and the latest one took what, 3 weeks for them to patch? I wonder how many PS3 owners returned their POS3's during that time period...

In your opinion, they should have just seen there is a problem, clicked "FIX USB BUGS" on their SDK interface, and sent out an immediate update.

Need more storage? No problem. Just plug in an external hard drive into the USB 2.0 port.

I guess I'd have to try out BAXY for myself to 'get' the improvement. I stand by what I said for now though, based on my use of the current store it doesn't strike me as all that bad.

Ha-ha-ha....yeah, that's exactly what I wanted! The OUYA team needs to just press their magic doo-hickey in their super duper OUYA SDK and reenable large disks support, all the while serenading us with music from unicorn horns and rainbows coming from every television set! How did you know?
Only, sarcasm aside and all your attempts to make me out to be foolish to the contrary--yes, that is exactly what I do expect to see happen. I expect the OUYA team to fix what they broke. What I start to suspect is deliberate breakage.
Hear me out please. And help me to understand please how any other conclusion is a better one to fit the details...maybe you'd rather pretend the OUYA team is simply incompetent? Although honestly I'm not quite sure how that makes things better...
Let's look at the facts, shall we? All it takes to fix USB external hard drive detection is root installation of the Paragon app. That's all that needs to happen, then the external storage will work again. Will work without a need to do a system reset every time you plug in the drive or jump through other hoops. This is something I've been told over and over again and seen others told over and over again whenever the issue of large USB disks not mounting was brought up--just root and install Paragon and your troubles will be over. It's easy.
I've also seen mention of a script which could run which would make needed changes in vold.fstab (a bit more understanding of the system needed to accomplish but easy enough if you know what you're doing and can follow instructions.) Since not everyone is comfortable with editing system files the easy button is to simply use Paragon and this is why it gets recommended so often.
Meanwhile I sit here just amazed that an external application can do what the OUYA developers seemingly cannot do and will not discuss doing. Are we really supposed to believe the makers of the system are unable to fix so simple of a problem as this because it is so extremely complicated---booooooooo--be very very scared---booooooooo....and yet outsiders can program an app that can do it apparently without breaking down a sweat? Really? Maybe incompetence is looking to be a better rationale after all?
No, as I said before this whole thing stinks to high heaven and between the USB bug (which looks less and less like a bug every day that goes by without an official fix) and the overscan bug which if posts by people who suffer from it are to be believed is only a bandaid that did nothing to fix the actual problem, the locked bootloader, the lack of root, lack of openness, large numbers of people on kickstarter who still haven't gotten their units, DRM that makes you depend on OUYA being there to continue playing what you paid for, etc etc...it starts to look like a pattern. And with the lack of communication it's impossible to know if things are ever going to be different.
I'm not hopeful. I posted this thread in hopes of someone giving me a reason to find hope again, to decide to stick it out and expect things would get better and no one has. So tomorrow after work when I can finally have some time to head over to the UPS pick up while the store is still open I'll be taking the printout Amazon sent me and returning the OUYA to get my money back.
I've seen others also making this decision and posting about it too. Maybe if enough of us return our devices the number of people saying no sale and voting with their wallets will be enough to make the OUYA team wake up and fix things. If they're as incompetent as you seem to think they are, I'm not sure how much good it will do though....

I think most of the problem with not having root, which is the root of a lot of problems, is that the device is being made for more than the members on this forum and other developer communities.
The device needs to be user friendly to some degree. If they start making root a standard, than those who don't know otherwise will start bricking their consoles left, right and center

All OUYA would have had to do was made it accessible via easter egg, similar to how developer options are enabled now on most roms by tapping the build number. They could even have paid homage by making it be the Konami code that unlocked things.
It's not *that* hard and is what they promised.
Most of the user friendly issues could be resolved by having a working recovery that allowed backups to be created before messing with the system. Something like CWM....

There's no accounting for taste. I'm glad it worked for you-- for me, it was a thoroughly unpleasant experience (probably made worse by the physical arrangement of the OUYA buttons on the controller, which for me are simply confusing). It just looked and felt very tacky to me, and seeing how paltry the native settings menus were before the system rolled over and coughed up the Android native Settings app made me feel like I was running someone's first theme.

For a storefront that ostensibly wants to highlight breakout titles as well as expose others, I found the display to be a fairly uninteresting grid that made it hard to see any given titles as standout. In their defense though, I was never really interested in the stock OUYA firmware.

More or less yes, and if I could do it again I would definitely have opted for a different solution (probably one of the upgraded Google TV sets). Although I probably will enjoy messing with the OUYA later (not having a good TV at home makes this hard), I must confess that my interest in messing around with ROMs has been fading fast over the last few months (more or less coinciding with swapping out my Galaxy Nexus for a HTC One). I still primarily own and use Nexus to tinker, but for the TV? I kind of want to be a bit lazier there.
Anyway, as for what you were saying earlier, I doubt the bugs are out of deliberate malice but unintentional/unconscious priority bias. They're out to make money first over encouraging a dev community, which is understandable, but it means that any fixes and resources aren't going to go where we'd like. OUYA has had a sort of Jekyll/Hyde thing going for a while now-- is it a consumer product? A dev box? Both? It's harder than I think they realized to be both.
In the end I just couldn't do it. Subconsciously I guess I really didn't want to return my OUYA because I kept checking to see if there'd been any updates and putting off the return. It didn't help that I had to work overtime all week and kept missing the window where the drop off for UPS is. I finally got a hold of Amazon and cancelled the refund.
Nothing has changed, all of the issues I mentioned before still exist, but I just can't let go. If---a big gamble as far as I'm concerned---but IF the OUYA team do manage to pull themselves up from the tailspin they're currently in and fix the system so it'll do all that they promised us from the beginning, the OUYA has the potential to rule the family room. The truth is nothing else seems to be aiming for the same heights that the OUYA is. There are so many things they have right that it just frustrates me all the more when something doesn't work right.
And most of these things they keep getting wrong are things that are easily fixable! I think someone in the thread said that the launcher baxxy was banged out in two days? I see a fix for the USB problem was posted almost immediately on the OUYA developer forums in June. An app has been developed and posted that allows a one click root via a big button, just like we were promised... Like I said, frustrating.
But I'm in. For as long as the OUYA works, or can be made to work. For as long as there is a community who wants to keep going forward.

Trust me if you think OUYA have made a pigs ear of software you've never had a really bad Android box. I put up with the Minix Neo X5 for 6 months before binning it. That was a truly god awful pile of crap. I've done more with the OUYA in a month than I did in 6 with the Neo. Sure, it's not perfect... but it's on the right track.

Yeah, I get what you mean though. I was looking through the competition while I was unable to get to the UPS drop off point and kept thinking to myself that even with the stuff that OUYA's gotten wrong, they're still so much further ahead of the curve than anyone else! But that's why it's so frustrating to see them missing this stuff and ignoring the requests of their customers to fix things already. I really don't think it's as hard as people are pretending it to be.

Your absolutely right if you look in the lk bootloader source it's really easy to make a button to get into bootloader. Alot of the other issues would only take someone with the source code a day or less (per issue and some one who is familiar with it).

So you see what I mean and understand why I'm so skeptical when people keep making excuses for them?
Like I said over at Ouya Forums, it's a two line edit thereabouts. If it can be done by you or I in vold.fstab as a dirty hack, there's no reason why the OUYA team with their access to the source code can't fix it properly.
The only thing I can think is malicious interference or sheer incompetence to explain their reticence in fixing things.

I like my Ouya, and thank goodness they sent me a retail kit instead of a preorder kit. Maybe getting it really late is a blessing in disguise.
I agree with a lot of things said in this topic RE: the makers of this box. The hardware's fine (well mine was), but their customer service support is lacking. I haven't seen this much reputation damage since XBAWKS. (not XBone, XBAWKS).
If the dev community is not happy and abandons the thing... at least the controller is salvagable. Not as good as the X360 or PS3's, but decent and better than the unusual Wiichuck, more comfortable than a bluetooth clip gamepad, no proprietary connection protocols and no MAC address hacking needed.

I'm debating on getting this tablet Android version or getting the Asus transformer mini(T102HA) Windows version.
Is the yoga book worth $399 or should I look into the ASUS?
As for usage I just need to be able to take notes, watch videos (YouTube, FreeflixHD,Koko time, ECT) check emails and web Browsing.
It would help to get some input from real users of the yoga book to help me narrow it down some..

That's an "apples and oranges" question, the answer to which depends how you feel about Android vs. Windows.
Speaking personally, I find the Windows tablet interface to be *horrible*; add in the much higher screen resolution on the YB, and I'll take the YB any day.
If you have to do any "real" work, however, I would prefer Windows (using the desktop interface, not the tablet interface) for the much wider range of software available and compatibility with peripherals such as printers.
Im leaning more towards an Android tablet or 2 in 1 like the the yogabook simple because I can do everything I need on a Android Device.

I used to lug around in a 14.1 inch windows 10 notebook, but it got too heavy as the day went on. (I work out in the field)
Then I moved to a windows convertible netbook, and when I got the Yoga Book android, I have sinced used it on a daily basis, as I have migrated all my reports over to Google Docs so the interface on that is the same whether I'm on a Windows device or an android device as you use a browser anyways.
For quick local documents, Office for Android does its job. Though I admit, it is a bit easier on the netbook with physical keys and the familiarity of some windows apps (like paint and paint.net for example), but the portability is more than enough to make up for it, not to mention the proper layout of apps on the tablet interface of Android as compared to the Windows one.
I just saw the Android model YB1-X90F at Walmart for $249. Almost tempted to buy a second one at that price but it may go even lower considering Lenovo didn't properly push this to market which makes consumers think it is essentially no better than most other devices. I love mine. It is a tad heavier than most tabs but the Halo keyboard once you get used to using it seals the deal imho. Really like being able to take notes and draw on it as well. I cannot play my "Shield" only games (Nvidia Lightspeed Studio stuff) on it but for me that was a small price to pay to have an Android tablet that I can keep updated without losing major features. Otherwise it is powerful and plays everything else I enjoy without a hiccup.
Personally I played with the Windows version of this tab once and felt for the price the experience was less than stellar. Admittedly I didn't fuss to long.
One item to note for both, this is another personal preference item, but I despise the glare of the screen and immediately after buying this device installed a matte finish protector, much better.

Wow that's a great price I just saw it at my local Walmart for $399 but they may have not put up the correct prices as the sticker said the Android version was $499 and the Windows was $599 but then they had a bland tag that said $399? Confused yes
I have one still - couldn't get anyone to accept it from me as a gift (Lenovo has a poor rep around here). Went back to my sammy s10.5. BUT I take the yoga with me travelling: it's light and unobtrusive, good enough screen for airport video, and the sound is expecially good. Good for notes, except be careful with the keyboard if there is any movement: easily miiss keys.

In store is where I saw it, actual device (at least two of them still) and price. I also can look up online and plug in my local store which does show the price of $249 but online states it is out of stock.

The price is really good. Just gotta find a store in my location that has them? Too bad Best Buy doesn't have it..
IMO I would skip it. It's utility is decent but there is minimal support from Lenovo and if you run into problems, your only option is to warranty repair it or factory reset. If you can't fix it with a reset, you can't fix it. Lenovo has not provided the necessary tools to reimage the device and start fresh. Not saying it's going to happen but if it does, you're out of luck. I would get a tablet from a manufacturer that is willing to invest at least some of their resources into supporting it. The update for Nougat isn't even scheduled until AFTER Android O drops. And I'm guessing given Lenovo's attention so far, that will probably be where the updates end.

Off the top of my head Samsung, HTC, Google, all of them have software that allow you to re-image from a stock image. A factory reset won't fix corruption in the boot sector, or some types of malware. Right now I'm dealing with this very specific issue on mine. The latest update won't install because it failed the first time and now says there is something in the boot partition that doesn't match the old checksum. Sounds to me like it wrote the new boot and failed on the system update. But without a tool like Samsung Kies for my S7, I can't flash a clean image. Have an issue on my Pixel, phone or tablet and I can fastboot flash a nice clean image.
That's why I got the Windows Version. I don't see Android on Intel Motherboards. The hassle with a cropped Insyde Bios etc...

Write it new. Use Fastboot to rewrite the boot image...
Get one of the ROM's here in XDA, unpack it and flash each image manually so you can see if something goes wrong during the flashing...
This is are the steps I use on my Lenovo Tab. The boot image the last one to make sure none of the previous write on it...
Fastboot flash cache (cache.img)
Fastboot erase splash
Fastboot flash splash (splash.img)
Fastboot flash system (system.img)
Fastboot flash recovery (recovery.img)
Fastboot flash userdata (userdata.img)
Fastboot flash boot (boot.img)
That's the plan, and I can then understand if you have the windows version why you would recommend it. Honestly I was solidly behind even the Android version when I first got it. It's not until I ran into firmware issues that I realized how little effort Lenovo has put into support for the Android version. I have to pay $15 to Easy Firmware to get the software image. With the windows version all your updates will be handled by Microsoft and the system will be supported until it can't run the latest version of windows. And in that case I would recommend it as well.

I got the Windows Version mainly because as mentioned I don't see android on Intel Based Mainboards. I wanted a Wacom replacement for on the go. Networking with Android is just bull****. Yes I know there are solutions, but why the headache? I interchange data between the different Workstations to often so I avoid having all the hassle. Even tough everyone praises the Cloud, interchanging data with Windows is so much faster and comfortable... As soon as I have time I will even publish a trick how to use the Halo surface as external Wacom replacement over the network.
