So what's with all the crying on XDA's EVO threads lately? - EVO 4G General

I remember the good ol days when people just dropped by, downloaded some stuff, left nice comments and went about their day. Lately, bout the last month or so, the threads have been filled with "I donated a dollar, I want my ROM" or "can I get an ETA on this?" (which is the rudest question I've ever seen here) or just people arguing or one-upping each other. I fear we're losing the community-based friendliness of this site as the days go along.
As we can see, a few devs have had enough and already left. How much longer is everyone gonna keep this up? It's like I visited XDA one day and it turned into an AOL n00b forum. It sucks. I want the old XDA back where people didn't cry about CM missing deadlines (they just visited again later and if a new CM was up they were happy, if not they just came back later), people didn't complain about Damageless losing his job and having to focus on his life instead of ours, people simply enjoyed what was available instead of hounding devs about when stuff is coming out.... I must say it'll be released when it's released!
I just don't understand what's so difficult about giving those who give us the time of our lives time to breathe and enjoy their lives too. It shouldn't matter whether a "donation" of a $1 or $1000 is made - the devs (and some of the senior members, shucks, even like me) deserve a lot more respect than what's going around lately. At the end of the day, I just don't want to suffer for following the rules when others decide to wreck it for the rest of us.
Anyway, I just had to rant. I still <3 XDA and always will. This place really has changed my life forever.

That is very well said. Devs should be praised not hounded.

annnnnnnd now you're crying lol sorry had to.

LOL, this is what happens when we recommend ROM flashing noobs to XDA developers. Impatient, expecting, demanding & consuming individuals.
The old XDA had it, it just multiplied x3 when Android came into the fray.

Everyone was a noob at some point. Don't let that be used as an excuse for bad forum behavior.

I have seen this before with Forums as the user-base grows and popularity increases, which Android brought many non technical users into the smartphone era, your impatient/arrogant/immature user-base grows as well and since they are still learning how things work but want it now since this is the era of entitlement your gonna get alot of asshats wanting there ROM now or there FIX now. It sucks but It happens.

One thing about XDA is its never been that user friendly or at least as long as I have been here. Seems like a few people come here just to be assholes. They know everything and even if you agree with them they will still act like dicks. With that said I try to stay out of those situations. Sit back in my thread and sometime comment on topics. Sorry but its true.
Try it, post something in the wrong thread by accident and see what happens.

This. The Evo was the first time that an android device really blew up with the non-technical crowd, and of course XDA has a reputation, so all of the new users came here. Unfortunanly, they don't really understand what it means to be a member of a development community though, and look at XDA like it's just another smartphone forum.

This is true, but back then people just took it in stride. Also, people have gotten a lot less militant about posting in the wrong threads. Back in june/july though, it was rough. And god forbid you didn't search first...

I lightened up my statement a bit.. its not a lot just a select few.
I've been guilty of wrong thread bashing myself it can be kinda fun. All depends on how out of place the topic is.

P_dub_S has it right. the market just expanded so much for androids. its like when blackberry came out with the Pearl and every teenage girl had one lol... most of the new phones arnt owned by tech people. hopefully in the fallowing months they will calm down. stil think the best forum was the xda section for the eris im just happy to have a phone lol so dont mind me

Most people just don't see how hard it is to make some of this stuff work. People must think that making roms/themes/kernels is just a bunch of copying and pasting or something...one thing that bugs the living hell out of me is on those Desire HD port threads...if the OP doesn't respond in 3 days, they just bump it saying something like "Well...I guess this is dead..." Devs ain't robots, something wrong with these people...

Exactly. What people don't understand is this is a hobby. We are not making a living doing this, and I do not get paid for this. Yes its true that we do receive donations but not NEARLY as many as I think people assume.

imho...these forums which used to be filled with great developers turned into a forums filled with the developers wanting compensation or in prettier words "beer money" for their time and effort instead of "joy and fun" or "hobby" of making roms and is slowly becoming more "pay-to-play" and if you don't pay, they take their business elsewhere to their own "pay-to-play" forums....just my own observation going from windows mobile development to android....

Not doubting you, but I'm curious (because I don't frequent other forums, or noticed anyone leaving), who took their "business" elsewhere, and where did they take it? I haven't really seen that - those donation links in the sigs have been around forever...

He is correct I have seen a few developers take their ROMs elsewhere (create their own website) but I'm not sure it was about money. I have donated to a few chiefs because I understand the time that goes into making these ROMs. Its time I could be spending with my kids. People seems to feel chiefs are obligated to do this for some reason. I do it because I like it not because I want to get paid. I get paid at work. When people complain at you all the time it turns it into work and then it isn't fun anymore.

Screw all of you....I payed my turkey sandwich and a hooker! I want my damn daily updates with a rom so spectacular that it will make me a full course meal.
Of course im playing but i cant help but agree with you. I find that i spend more time sorting through "non searchers" than anything else. I hope to see this calm down over the next year. Good thing about this is that people will only get smarter and simmer down....My car forums(g35driver.com) is getting worse as the car gets cheaper. More kids and ridiculousness.

Hero CDMA General - What's the point?

We have a general section where we can post general stuff about general things, but yet all sorts of threads get moved around for seemingly no reason? Why can't we have a place to actually be a community, instead of just business 24/7 with no play? I mean, yeah there's an off topic thread but that doesn't even come close to suiting the actual need for this section to be left alone.
Other forums have way more of a sense of community than here. I applied to become a mod for this CDMA Hero section and got denied, so I am no longer going to attempt to try to keep the little bit of community and friendship we have left, here. I personally got very sick of seeing too many things get moved around, too much ****-swinging from the moderators here that I was willing to take on the load of this section to try to calm the tensions and everything, but it's just getting out of hand again. There's many other places for people to go to not have to deal with this sort of mess. XDA will learn from the self destruction that the mods are bringing on to it.
Watch, this thread will be deleted and I'll be banned before the end of the day for rebelling against a dictatorship.
[my2cents]
It's called the "general" section for a reason. Even if it's to agree that we all like our hero's better than iCraps that DOES pertain to the hero. I understood the OFF-TOPIC thread to be a place we could go to "play". I never thought the rest of the General Section was to be for discussion about the hero and the hero only.
No disrespect Timmymarsh but I have to ask: Did you merge all those threads because people were complaining about them?
If not then I don't get it...
I mean we're behaving in the other sections right?
on a positive note, the only reason we care so much is because we like this place..

There is the general off-topic forum in the general section of these forums.

Yes it is nice to have the Hero users as one community but you need to realize we are part of the bigger community of xda-developers.

I expect mixed feelings on my protest, and of course, I won't be listened to because I am one person, and it wouldnt bother xda if I was here or not, but as long as I am able to, I will call it as i see it.
Who wants to leave the hero area to go surf through too much junk in off topic when us hero people could have our own simple general discussion forum, instead of cramming 1000 threads into one. Pointless to me. But then again I dont have any say so here because this is what's called a dictatorship. Unfortunately I am not a blind sheep that follows whatever someone else decides.
Sounds to me like you got denied to become a mod and now you're all butthurt that the mods are doing their job. Sounds to me like they were right for denying you, if you couldn't step down and take it gracefully. XDA has an off-topic forum. Hero subsection has an offtopic thread. You have to understand, the Admins have to take into consideration amount of bandwidth used, total amount of space, making backups, needing space for backups. There's alot more going on behind the scenes then just "mods are fags."
They're volunteers, and do what needs to be done to insure the forum runs smoothly.
I see everyones point! And Jerry by repeating that you aren't getting heard does make it sound like your vaj-j does have some sand in it. But, I see how you would want a hero community, off topic, bs, section...just for us. But we are part of a bigger community (like someone said) and if we have our own little section in here...we will never go be part of the bigger community. we would be our own cliq. Then turn into a gang and probably go kill everyone in the G1 section for trying to take over our section. Then it would be gang wars not XDA.
East side. Hero for life.

I expected some smartass **** to come from you man. Sad but true. No, I'm not butthurt at all. Their loss, not mine, honestly. I tried to step up and take on some of the load from this area alone to try to calm down some of the hostilities here and it jsut proved that it was a waste of time and that moderators here really don't give a damn about us as individual users. They can piss all of us hero people off, except the few **** riders that do exist here, and it wouldn't affect them one bit because they have other forums with sheep there, too.
Give it a few more months, you'll see some crazy **** start to happen. I can see it now.
Meh. Only problem i really see is that the General Section is mostly the same as the Q&A section.
This is by far the most uptight group of folks of all the forums I hang out on. It's cool, you guys do great work. But, man, some of you take ALL of this stuff way too seriously.

1. If the moderators didn't give a damn, we'd still have a subforum in the GSM section.
2. Wouldn't have a sticky wiki.
3. Wouldn't have this thread
Basically, no mods are not here to serve individual users. They're here to server the community, and if you do have a problem with it, write a petition thread instead of *****ing and moaning, if enough people say they want it, it will go into action. (See point 1)
Seriously though, all this seems to be to me is, you didn't get made a mod, so mods don't care about individual users. I also have to repeat, that since you can't step down gracefully, I support their decision. Look at how long Toast was asking to be a mod for, never saw any threads like this from him, even after he was told no. I respect him for that.

Damn you neb. 3rd keyboard in 3 months ruined by you and coke!
You sir win 100 internets.

Why all the hate? Kinda ridiculous.

You know I kinda debated about starting this thread but I finally read enough smartass-think-they-are-better-than-everyone-posts. Im a member on countless electonics forums with thousands of posts with the same user name I might add and this forum kinda tops them all as far as "rude people". Yes, I might be "newer" to these forums, but while most of you were in elementary school, I was working on computers, installing networks and doing competition car audio.
Now lets start.
Why were forums made? For the masses to gather and share information, ideas, buy & sell, meet others and just down right chat to one another. *And for people that got picked on in their school days and decide to be a jerk online because they want to feel better about themselves.*
It seems like almost every single thread I read there is someone that asks the "standard question" that has probably been answered numerous times and then you get the standard response. "Well if you would of read, you would know the answer." Instead of being a douche, you could of just typed the answer, gained more post counts and could of probably got your Thanks Meter up another notch.
I love the answer, "Thats what the search feature is for." Well I'm sure almost all of you have tried to search and maybe your search wasnt bigger than 3 letters which gets excluded or so many other queries come that dont get even come close to answering your question. Sometimes its like trying to find waldo in a book with really really big freaking pages.
Then the, "If you would of read the whole thread you would know the answer" response. Well jesus, do you guys realize how fast some of these threads move? Damn, I can make a post, go to bed, wake up and noticed during the overnight the thread gains 10+ pages. Now imagine you are someone new to this, you have read the stickies, done a few searches, got their phone rooted ok but then notice a bug so they ask the "standard question". Well when you have an ungodly amount of threads and an even bigger number of actual posts sometimes its like finding a needle in a haystack. When just asking a question (Which is what forums were made for) can sometimes save you hours of searching thousands of threads.
Some of the people on this forum just need to be patient and help people out, instead being an ASS. We were all newbies once. And we will all be newbies to some other subject in the future. "Can't we all just get along"
And before anyone does the standard flaming. No, this did not happen to me. Search my screen names for posts if you wish. I just hate seeing in almost every 500+ page thread were someone asks a question and the next few people have some sort of smartass answer.
Just be nice, answer the question and watch your Thanks Meter go up. Simple as that.
If people werent asking questions then these forums wouldnt even be a quarter of the size they are now.
Thanks for reading. Have a great day.
Also, thanks to all the Devs that have spent countless days and sleepless nights to help all of us have a more enjoyable experience with our phones.
Uhh, there are already a few threads talking about the same rants, next time search before you create a thread......

Thanks bro, but you are right though, there is a little to much tension at times around here. I have been a member of this site for many years, I had another account but I forgot my name and password so I created this one about three years ago. My point is, I been coming here for over 5 years or so and I am on this site damn near every single day but I never post much if ever. I usually search for what I am looking for at best and then just move on while avoiding the stupid crap. I am also a member of sprintusers, ppcgeeks, androidforums and a few others and they all seem to have their fare share of idiots. Since xda is probably the largest site with the most traffic compared to the others I guess you run the risk of seeing more idiots here as well.
Well said sminker. If people do not like what people post they are just better off keeping it to themselves. Be part of solution not the problem.

Sir you are completely right. People can and will act completely different in this "Alternate Universe" than they will in real life. Why? Becuase they can and it makes them feel a little more "Alpha".
Hey I remember being new to a certain forum not this one though, and asking a simple question. The regular jerks of the forum proceeded to try to make me feel like an idiot. Needless to say my feelings weren't hurt but I guess it's that "Alpha Male" complex.

Fight Thread

I can't believe I'm posting this on XDA, but we really need a fight thread so these young whipersnappers can come in and rant about things that amount to lack of research. In a week we've almost lost two devs, and our curse count is the highest in XDA.
(my2cents)
I know most of the trolling is from first time Android owners who have been "lurking" for years. Only to sign up when they get a bad flash, wipe the sd, or some other common bug. They log on and cry, and moan in the development... DEVELOPMENT, section.
So Im going to post what to expect when trying new roms, modems, kernals, etc.
1) bootlooping
2)full wipe, everything is subject to erase
3)laggy programs
4)whack ass battery life
5)wake problems
6)banding on cam
7)computer with exclaimation point
9)"logcat or it didnt happen"
10)"read, read, read"
So if you are going to grow a pair and try to blame a dev for your flashing woesm save it. The vets here really dont give a damn cause the true vets know adb, odin, and terminal. Vet doesnt mean the amount of posts it meas we were smart enough to read the stickies. (they do say "read first" you know.
No one here is going to hold your hand and say "this is how you flash" for every fukken rom, modem, sys app, and kernal. We arent going to answer the same question a hundred times, hence the search button.
Bottom line, we may all major in engineering, but you have to know your classification. As a freshman its up to you to research and get the remedial answers. sophmores help out the freshmen without hendering your learning. Juniors and seniors answer questions but remember you dont know it all. 5th years, aka devs, make the effort without being an ass. Set the expectation and stick with it.
Make sense? Good. Know your roll and shut your mouths gibronis! Lol.
Edit: please allow 1-2 full days of testing before crying about the OP needs updating. If you have the kinda time to stare at a thread and update an OP instantly, then you already knew there was a problem. If you dont have that time, what makes you think a dev does? (poor saps)

Personally Ive bricked a hardware locked phone, that I had to make a jig for after trying everything else under the sun.I read all the disclaimers and knew if anything happened it was my resposibility. The community took pity and took several man hours worth of effort trying to help and i've never been anything but grateful.
So instead of ranting about those that ruin it for us all (though I agree), I'd rather take the time to thank the rest of the community that shows patience and helps, and especially thank the devs that allow us to break our phones in new and exciting ways.
Keep up the good work, and thanks again.

Both the OP and your post have it both right +1........... There are a number of us who will help people just to help them understand, and what I find appalling is when you do, some are just so selfish they complain...... essentially, that you weren't willing to get on a plane/train or auto and drive over to their house and to a "home call" repair for them..... It's really comical to me that people get a real work of art (the custom ROM) and all they do is ***** that it didn't come with a a beer and fries..............go figure
Also, I see more hostility here than some of the other phone forums, must just be the popularity of this phone.
Both of you great posts.

Pretty much every dev here has left in frustration at some point, fed up with the abuse and bad treatment. This recent episode of someone actually flat out insulting Eugene in his own thread is a new low though.

Wtf are serious? What did he say to eugene and why? He just came back.
You know what I find hilarious? 90% of the ppl here who talk s**t to others on xda wouldn't have the balls to say it to that persons face
^ Ha! Ain't that the truth.

What are you complaining for?

Ive had my Vibrant since its release on July 15th, this is my second device because a few hours out of the box it just bootlooped.
I love it, and i love the dev community thats here for it, but im tired of hearing people complain about stock updates that their not gonna use. "samsung doesnt update their devices", "This is my last samsung phone"...Are you serious? Why complain when you've had an awesome dev community since the start. People know their not going to run stock but the complain anyway. Imo, I think people are just jumping on the Samsung Hate bandwagon. This is an awesome phone and community, And our Vibrants still murder more than half the Android Comp on stock 2.1, you guys saw the youtube reviews right?.
Why dont we give more praise instead of more ungreatfullness because this just sickens me.
"AND IM NOT CRYING ABOUT OTHER PEOPLES CRYING, IM SIMPLY STATING THAT ITS VERY UNNECESSARY TO CRY WHEN YOU DONT HAVE TO"
PLEASE EVERYONE FIND YOUR FAVORITE GREAT (DEVS/THEMERS & AND GENERAL HELPFUL PEOPLE) AND PM THEM A THANKS FOR ALL THEIR HARD WORK

Agreed. This is my first android phone and will be keeping it for a long time. Devs have been awesome, but you will always have people who ***** and complain. It's just the nature of the beast.
Well said. This is a beast of a phone when run on custom roms, and our amazing devs are doing some great stuff to double the performance. Kudos to them. But some people simply live to whine and ***** around in their daily life let alone an internet forum.
Love this Vibrant and this great community behind it.
One of the reasons i think sammy doesnt update is because they dont stand a chance vs our dev field so why bother you kno?

I love my Vibrant also. My phone does EVERYTHING that I could want a pocket sized computer to do; and it does it fast and it does it on a beautiful screen. The folks who have taken the time and energy to mod this rad device are plain and simply: awesome. Thanks to everyone at <TW> and EDT (my favs) for tweaking my phone in ways that I never could. Thanks to all who have worked on this device and produced a dozen + other ROMS. And thank you to the new Devs who are willing to continue tinkering with their own, hard earned, phones for the benefit of us all.

I so agree with u! this community has been great and theyve been so helpful too. Ty so much and im loving my vibrant.

Yeah and you 2 are probably some of the whiners he is talking about. If you don't have anything positive to contribute to his post then don't comment. He made a very valid statement. I haven't been a member for long, but I have seen many threads that were either titled something about never buying samsung again or whining about not getting stock updates. So unless you have something constructive to contribute to this thread then don't come in and bash him for just trying to point out that the phone is awesome and that people are worried about stock updates when they don't even use them

Disagree. This post has to reasons. To get people to see how great their phone is and to get them to be grateful for all the hardwork here in xda.
Agreed, the phone is great and still can be considered in top 5 phones out there. However I will like stock gingerbread for the sake of GPS drivers and Voodoo Kernel.

I never said his statement was invalid. I'm simply pointing out that threads like this often turn into flaming etc. People posting hate threads are a problem on this forum. People replying to those threads with flaming is also a problem. People posting thread that are prone to start flame wars are also a problem. Threads like this pop up all the time and more often than not it ends up being a flame war. I agree with the OP. People should take the phone for what it is or stfu and leave. But making this forum better isnt just about shutting down flamers when they start crap.. its also about not feeding their raging and/or posting things that invite them to start trouble. Constructive enough for you?
If you haven't been here for long than maybe you have yet to see the pattern. And maybe you should at least thing about what I said in my initial post before resorting to insults. While your at it, I invite you to find a single post of me whining about anything. Because I promise you wont.
When Samsung releases updates then our devs can tear them down and make them better. Without that source code it's very difficult to make the custom roms that are so friggin awesome. This is why we don't have a totally stable and working 2.3 rom out yet, and we probably won't until Samsung makes the stock 2.3 upgrade available.

Haha, nice man.
thanks for all the hard work yall saved me when i somehow erased everything on my phone and was stuck in cwm
I, personally, have nothing to hate on the phone about..
We all complained for 2.2, but knew that our roms that we already have are FASTER and BETTER, when we did get 2.2 stock, no one used it, it was used by devs to probably put a few things in their roms, but after that, its gone.
The GPS sucks, i get it, thats their fault, they made a mistake, other companies have before as well (Apple with their antenna) I don't use GPS i have a GPS so i use that instead of my phone.
Besides that, i can complain for probably... no flash for the camera, but thats it.
MY phone is PERFECT, with the devs all that hard work, and i'm talking about the REAL devs, not the fags who theme and call themselves devs.
(no offence to themers at all, themes are themes, and are not meant to be a full rom, with the exception of Jellette's Bi-Sidekick ofc, it had to be a new rom even though its a theme)
I, Thank you all developers for sticking with us through the hard time that Samsung has given the devs by not releasing the source code, etc.
Thank you.
Just a wee note to remind people to keep it friendly. It's becoming a bit of a habit having to close threads like this because of childish and inappropriate behaviour.
Don't let this one go the same way.
Thanks...
Agreed! Good points!

Thank you for everything.

I want to just take a second and say thanks for ALL the support I have received from most of you since I started out here. I realize that Autism and Android were an unlikely pair but I thought it worked well.
Lately there has been an increasing level intolerance for what I was trying to do here. I know it's a vocal minority but they have become louder and louder. I have become quite disheartened as of late with the direction this forum has taken and I'm going to step back for a while. My ultimate goal is to further the spread of Autism Awareness and hopefully get Android4Autism launched by the end of the summer or early fall and so I'm going to redirect my efforts there.
I honestly had the best of intentions with everything I was doing here but it has apparently run it's course. Aside from asking you to "think about donating your old devices for the Android4Autism project (and I specifically said not until after everything was set up and legit so that everyone was protected) and votes, I never asked for anything. Despite the claims that have been made to the contrary about my intentions.
I want to thank everyone for voting for my blog but as you may notice the thread has been moved after being here for over 2 1/2 months. I realize that it was not "on topic" but it was a positive thread. I thought it was amazing how everyone unified and worked together for a common goal. I suspect that the vocal minority contributed to this and that saddens me. I'm not angry this happened, it's just that fact that some people would take it upon themselves to get this removed from our forums after all this time, instead of just not reading it.
I'm not looking for anything out of this. After all you have given to me, I felt I owed you an explanation for my decision. That's the very least I can do. I'll never be able to repay all the kindness and support you have shone to both me and my family. You have all made a difference in our lives. You have helped to spread awareness and for that I will forever be grateful.
Please don't turn this into a flame war either. I'll close the thread myself. I just want everyone to understand how grateful I am for everything and that my stepping back is my choice. My methods are becoming the target for some people and I won't change the way I'm doing things because I believe in what I'm doing. So the best thing is to just walk away. At least for now.
You all know where to find me and I'm happy to help. Please feel free to contact me through my blog or Google+ if you need anything and I will do whatever I can to help you.
Thanks again for everything. I'm very proud of what we were able to accomplish. Please help to keep this community moving forward.
Rob

If the bs here isn't worth your time I can hardly blame you. You've been far more generous with it than most would be. I as I am sure most people wish you nothing but the best!

How hard is it to not click on threads about things you're not interested in?
Rob,
Keep up the good work brother! Hopefully things will calm down here while you focus on your rom! I sent you a PM a while back... I may have some connections in the school (if you don’t already). Might help in pushing your rom on a local basis. Stay strong, God bless, and good luck in your endeavors!

As for the OP, keep up the good work bro
im not a homer by any means but when my Epic took a swim i was forced to boot my moment up and went back to SDX developers for roms..i REALLY wished the Epic would have caught on over there..just seems like a much better environment....this site has driven away quite a few developers..its a shame..thanks for everything you do rob.not just over here but with your Windows Mobile stuff over at PPCGeeks.if people cant tolerate your Autism Awareness, with all the good stuff you put out for the Epic, then this isnt the place for them..it shouldnt be the other way around...

Just as hard as it is to follow the forum rules. Say for instance that I considered the elimination of homosexualaity a "positive cause". Should I be allowed to push that agenda here at the cost of the owners of the site simply because I think this is a positive agenda? (According to some users, yes...)

Regardless of what Rob has given to us (the community) why does he not have to follow the rules of the forum? Why is it appropriate for him to come and complain that his thread was moved to the correct forum and he is quitting because he disagrees with the opinion of those that pay for and/or manager this resource to be available to us?
@dnathan13: Regarding your comment on my membership length here... What Android software have you developed in your lengthy membership in these forums?

Fail to see how pointing out that we must play by the rules the owners of this site set is "dumping on someone". It's reality, if you don't like it create your own forum and set the rules...
EDIT: I have nothing against Rob's cause and believe the thread is in the correct forum now...

Keep that head up Rob we are all still behind you. You showed us a piece of yourself and your family here and became a friend to most of us. Keep in mind one thing, you are dealing with a lot of minors on heee and they cant grasp the idea they are ****ting on you with some of the comments about your intentions. They arent mature enough to see how it comes out. The mature adults will remain on your side.
Never feel you asked for anything or too much. Your community came together to give you what you deserved without you asking for it.
Take a rest man play with those kids, your headed in the right direction with the autism awareness, families will benefit from your sweat!
