Why would Samsung make their own chip? Put simply, because they can. Samsung has the facilities and expertise needed to make their own chip, and by so doing they avoid the need of purchasing chips from another vendor (in this case, their competition: Qualcomm).

because they didn't want to use the ****ty gpu that comes with the original snapdragon (the newer snapdragon like in the dhd has a good gpu).

Because hummingbird is vastly superior in real world scenarios

Quadrant and linpack as well as most CPU benchmarks that rely on math being done by FPU run much quicker on the snapdragon because of its 128 bit register vs hummingbirds 64. I believe the snapdragons can turn half of it off to save power too. This explains part of the benchmarks but the hummingbird has optimizations snapdragon doesn't, and vise versa,but is suppose to be faster in most real world scenarios as Samsung claims and judging by browser load time comparisons I've seen and how well it runs android 2.1 I'd be inclined to agree. It keeps up with a nexus running 2.2 which is very reassuring so I'd worry less on benchmarks if I were you unless you really feel the need to show your friends how fast your phone can calculate pi to nth degree.

On paper yes hummingbird is better, but in the real world as you put it, its only as good as the software that runs on it, and I've not found anything yet that runs faster thanks to having a hummingbird than it would on say an n1 or desire.

The sgs is crippled by rfs, no processor can make up for that. In 3d games the sgs out performs any snapdragon based phones

No disrespect but a well setup nexus on 2.2 is noticeably faster than even the most streamlined lag fixed sgs. The sgs wins the quadrant benchmark but in actual use the nexus is a fair bit faster.

You take into consideration just the CPU, N1 and SGS's file systems are different resulting in SGS to be bottlenecked; SGS's main plus is the GPU power, try running those types of GPU heavy items on N1 and they will not run as well. That's the main benefit of Hummingbird compared to Snap but don't just rely on comparing CPU's, there are more things at work here.

Quadrant doesn't mean much, placebo effect at work here. Just a benchmark and doesn't translate (much) into real-world performance. Remember that Google also developed 2.2 almost specifically with Nexus One in mind resulting in more benefits on a N1 than a lot of phones.

Admittedly I've not tried them all, and I admit the sgs runs the graphics benchmarks in quadrant noticeably faster, but the games I've tried all run about the same, so what good is that super powerful gpu if nothing takes advantage of it?

Try some gameloft games like asphalt 5, the sgs is a lot smoother

You could try using a GPU benchmark rather than a system wide benchmark to determine GPU power. Neocore for example is strictly GPU and SGS outperforms N1 almost two-fold.
Again, that is a benchmark and you just have to try out different apps and games to test out GPU's for yourself.

Well for what its worth I've just tried asphalt 5, on the n1 and honestly its just as smooth as on the sgs, so in the end I still say there seems no real advantage in the real world.

Sorry mate but I have to disagree. Having owned a Nexus One, a HTC Desire and a SGS, I can tell you that the Nexus One was the fastest for opening apps, market, etc. The SGS fell between the nexus and the desire. I think each processor has been optimised for different things.
There is a HUGE difference in the graphics department. Asphalt, especially the old hardware accelerated versions (the new ones are dumbed down so they work on the snapdragon phones) were extremely laggy on the nexus and desire. on the SGS theyre very smooth and dont have the annoying multitouch bug.
Try the other gameloft games (sandstorm), polarbit (toon warz), pretty much all of the (few) 3d intensive apps. Very noticeable.

the difference in performance was the reason I switched, esp the annoying multi touch, and welcomed my way into a world of sgs lag issues and a non working gps
Im not a big gamer but I do occasionally pull out a title. The differences in the processors is also apparent if you use rockplayer to watch videos.
imho, I preferred the hardware and AOSP feel of the nexus but wish the hummingbird processor+gpu had been used instead of the snaprdragon (or alternatively the snapdragon with a better gpu).

I hope you're kidding on this one!
iOS is a closed system with a closed mind. Apps have to go trough intensive aprouval for the AllMighty and AllKnowing apple before hitting the market and, for small idiotic mistake, like a logo to close to the one of the AllMighty, it won't be aprouved.
And not to talk about all the iTune that you have to install just to get it to sync/update... you think Kies is crappy, try iTune on windows...you'll get a couple of services in the background in bonus with the resource hog app!
And, on another note, you should all take in consideration all the GPU intessive task in android, Gaming is only part of it... don't forget browsing, gallery, video playback (you can record a 720p video and watch it back full fluid).
Frankly, I don't realy get all the fuss about the so called "lag" on SGS... I don't realy get any at all and I'm still on the original (no lag fix) rom...

open gl es2.0( better games ) support on N1 ? when ?

I don't really play a lot of games on my phone but I have tried a number of games such as Abduction, Robo defense, wave blazer, speed forge and It's getting visually boring .. I wonder if android will ever get a real open gl es2.0 and be able to come out with games like what iPhone has; examples, need for speed and street fighter 4..
don't get me wrong, I love my phone very much but from time to time everyone craves for more.. I mean its not really a hardware issue since the N1 has better hardware specs than our friendly Apple counterparts .. come on we want Neon Floating Point support on our n1.... don't u agree ?

Unfortunately this specifically won't happen....we may have the far superior CPU, but we have no GPU....graphical rendering is all done CPU-side; whereas the iphone has a GPU chip in it. Our CPU is pretty ridiculously powerful, such that it performs graphically about 80% of what the iphone is capable of, but we are limited by the lack of a GPU onboard.

What are you talking about? Of course the Nexus One does have a GPU, capable of OpenGL ES 1.1 and 2.0.

Dude, u're completely wrong. N1 has a separate chip for 3D rendering, a separate HARDWARE chip.
It's NOT CPU-based.
The snapdragon processor has a dedicated GPU called Adreno 200. A dedicated GPU is a requirement of Flash 10.1 and the reason why some older Android devices will not be able have it. The reason why some games on the iPhone look better than the N1 is because the N1 has a lot more pixels to push. The N1 can processes more Polys/second then iPhone but because there are less pixels the iPhone can render some games better than the N1.
Would be nice to see a software update the optimizes the GPU or perhaps on a new Cyanogen Rom

Don't forget that any games designed for the Marketplace need to run on older versions of Android as well as older devices (such as the Dream). Because of that developers need to choose between making apps backwards compatible for maximum customers or writing apps better on only specific high-end devices (N1).

Yep the Samsung S has a PowerVR SGX540 = 90 million triangles/sec versus Nexus One = 22 million triangles/sec
Not sure why Google did what they did but Samsung is using their new S5PC110 application processor. This processor contains an ARM Cortex-A8 core paired with a PowerVR SGX540 GPU.

In some respects that is true but look at Asphalt 5 for example. The game was designed with the iPhone in mind but when run on a stock N1, it lags real bad. I think a lot of these game developers make one version instead of platform specific ones.

I cannot understand why everyone is saying that hummingbird processor is better than snapdragon and that's why I started this thread.
I own an HD2 (snapdragon) and SGS (hummingbird).
I've run linpack and quadrant in both phones and here are the results showing that snapdragon is 4 to 5 times faster.
Hummingbird: linpack 13,864 quadrant CPU 1456
Snapdragon: linpack 63,122 quadrant CPU 4122
I'm only talking for the CPU cause if you go to 3D I'll agree that hummingbird is better (but I don't care about 3D cause I don't use my device for games)

After looking into it for a while, I was focusing on what makes the Nexus One so much better than the other phones. On the chip level, I didn’t see it. Then it dawned on me to look at what Google had to say on the matter. Well, it was there in black and white. In their 20 May 2010 Developer’s Blog entry (http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/05/android-22-and-developers-goodies.html) they say that people could see a 2-5x speed increase. I think it is pointed out in an entry later in the blog dealing with NDK, which I initially missed: “ARM Advanced SIMD (a.k.a. NEON) instruction support The NEON instruction set extension can be used to perform scalar computations on integers and floating points. However, it is an optional CPU feature and will not be supported by all Android ARMv7-A based devices. The NDK includes a tiny library named “cpufeatures” that can be used by native code to test at runtime the features supported by the device’s target CPU.”
So, I guess this means that NEON is the difference. If your phone’s CPU has it and it’s enabled for JIT, you can expect higher Linpack numbers.

If you want a real test, run a hd video on both phones, or a psx emulator and see if the nexus one is 5x faster... it is the same if not slower then the sgs

This means Hummingbirds are equipped with NEON. Why its not so effective/used in Quadrant/Linpack? My guess they (these benchmarks) are not compiled/optimised for Hummingbirds, just for Snapdragons.
I came from owning an iPhone and playing lots of games on it. I bought the SGS purely for the gaming performance of the Hummingbird processor.
Having seen the difference in game quality between the HTC Desire and the SGS, I know I made the right decision. Benchmarks don't mean anything.
As long as the device can run apps, games, multimedia smoothly, I dont care much about those benchmarkers, maybe they were designed and/or optimized for snapdragon prior to hummingbird.

In terms of overall smoothness (everything, not just games) the SGS is vastly superior to any other android phone I've seen (Desire included).

The best test I believe would be to put the phones to encode something (like a video) but I don't know any software that could do that. (If anyone knows some please point them to me and I'll be happy to post the results here)

man. if you are not happy, then i think you should sell it. no one here will give you a satisfying answer that warm your heart. look for desire hd or something.
to answer ur questions. i get a 2100+ on quadrant. using voodoo fix and oclf on my eclaire. lag free and smooth as butter.
but either way, these test scores mean nothing. they were not designed for samusng hardware. it was designed based on htc and the snapdragon processor.
even people who use neocore for gpu are wrong. if you wana test the gpu performance, use nenamark1. the sgs gives u 49+ fps while the desire HD struggle to give u 35. while if you use neocore. the sgs gives u 56 while desire hd 58

the display alone is worth keepin the sgs for me. sure people might like i phone 4 display more. but nothing in my eyes come close to the contrast and colors of the super amoled. watching a movie or playing a game is a joy in this device.
hell yesterday evening a local htc store had a demo of desire hd. and the guy was nice enough to me play with it for like 1 hour.
device as a hardware look. its friggin sexy as hell. screen ? beauitful large 4.3 screen. quality colors compared to sgs ? fail. a lil slow and laggy " i am sure its because of the firmware. once roms are out, it will be faster "
i was thinking to change to desire hd honestly. but i wake away from the store kissing my sgs.
i love the desire hf look and feel. but as of now its not as smooth as my sgs. and the screen isnt as vibrant.

to be honest. the day psx4droid use gpu. galaxy owners are in heaven.
Its unlikely it ever will though, even modern pc emulators barely use the gpu, only for anti aliasing

I guess glbenchmark uses native C code (hopefully with armv7 optimization), so the JIT compiler has no effect. From the scores it seems that the floating point unit in Snapdragon is faster - but most of the time it is not used (except video & games).
Anyway, a benchmark to measure the same algorithm in both native & java code with scalar & vector instructions would be great...

he's not whining, well, not in the first place and i don't see any harm on that i think he's trying to UNDERSTAND reasons behind numbers and daily use with help of other people, so am i. if i had to sell phones for every problem i encounter i will problaby be without (smart)phone at this time
i don't care about benchmarks, but if you think that sgs is smoother than hd2 xda optimized (with wm 6.5 or android 2.2) you obviously never owned an hd2 i'm not talking about games, like johcos says galaxy s performance is not questionable. but android is not all about game. anyway, i don't think hardware is the problem here, sure sgs is superior in many aspects, we know that, regardless benchmarks (even if it seems here that only benchmarks where sgs win are trustworthy, others are not good, not optimized, not realistic, meaningless for real life performance etc.). with a little help from samsung and this community sgs will soon outperform (in real usage) all snapdragon phones. i hope

Honestly couldn't agree anymore, even with all the problems the SGS has. The screen+hardware combination is just too overwhelming for me to swap the phone for something else.

I just bought one out right with no contract, and I will see how I like it for the next few days.
First impression is that its def a finger magnet. Overall, the phone is much snappier than my OC N1 running Rod's latest MIUI ROM. Gingerbread has some nice improvements but I am already missing the MIUI slide screen. Someone please port it over ASAP .
The screen, while being the S-AMOLED, isnt a night and day difference from the N1 screen.
More on the phone as I continue to use it.....

There is always something to wait for. I have never found the single core on my N1 to be lacking, so I highly doubt I will find the significantly faster single core in my Nexus S lacking. If dual cores are a big deal 6 months from now I will sell the Nexus S and trade up.

I don't think the Hummingbird is "significantly faster" than Snapdragon. Sammy has better GPU performance, which is what is mostly noticed. Both are clocked at 1GHz. I do believe Hummingbird performs slightly better than Snapdragon (can't recall why I have that belief, though), but when comparing strictly processor performance, it's minimal. The GPU is the big difference.

@soberguy Well another point to the single core issue is not things that are taking place right now but things that are taking place over the next year. Developers are going to start making high thing that will require dual core for maxium performace. Also.....where are the moderators to move this

Oh no trust me, you and I agree. I'm not getting the S with dual core around the corner. I think it's a complete waste of money. The S has some advantages over the 1, but to me, they aren't worthwhile with dual core coming very, very soon.
I just wanted to point out that Hummingbird and Snapdragon are both 1GHz, and I don't think that Hummingbird is significantly faster than Snapdragon. GPU is a different story; we all know that has been HTC's achilles heel for some time now (go back to their WinMo days and the driver fiasco...).

It is hard to know until you have both GalaxyS/2.2 with NexusS/2.3 running side by side, as they have the same CPU/GPU combination and the only difference is the OS.
It could well be that 2.3 uses the GPU for something what 2.2 was doing with CPU alone. And this could turn out as the biggest difference.
I am sure that N1 GPU as such is plenty fast enough, as it is used by the most of the current WP7 phones. Nobody seems to be complaining about the "jerkiness" of the WP7 interface. It is actually a matter of the time and effort sank into UI and the underlying graphics drivers. As a consequence, it can also happen, that N1 graphics drivers get less optimized as the ones in NS. We will see.
Even if dual core “around the corner” I honestly don’t think we will see optimized software for at least 6 months.... Look at the desktop computing world.. It took nearly a year for dual core to make a difference back when it was intel core solo vs core duo (or amd64 vs X2)... The software just took a lil longer to catch up. Even now, its taking awhile for a quad core to be worth it over a dual core

actually the cpu on the snapdragon is faster for computational tasks thanks to its FPU. hummingbird is on par to much slower in terms of computations (its linpack is like 14 lol)
the gpu is what separates the hummingbird from the snapdragon which is why hummingbirds seem better due to its overall performance

Excellent post, Sir. I always had the impressions, for some reason, that Hummingbird was a touch better, but the GPU made it really excel. It's great to hear that Snapdragon is actually a bit better, but is in fact held back due to the GPU. This makes me reconsider my next purchase significantly. I was thinking of holding off on HTC, as they'll continue to use Qualcom. Perhaps I'll stick with HTC, depending on when they have a dual core available for AT&T frequencies.
Ima gonna puke with all this crap about nexus s. It sucks people its made by samsung. Plastic shell cheap ****. Gps problems will come out soon and u ppl will be crying why I brought it! It's a galaxy s phone so I won't be surprised if tons of **** is wrong with it. Get the new LG phone instead or muizu m9

But that was the first time people had seen dual core on any device. Now it's been around a while and people know what they are dealing with.

So, I don't know if I'm the only one, but the only mention of dual core in a device that I've seen is the new Motorola Stingray tablet they were using to show off Maps 5. I don't even think Ginger supports Dual core. I honestly don't think we'll see anything dual core until Honeycomb.
Is there really any reason for NEEDING a dual-core processor in your phone? The only reason I can see for having it is to brag about it.

Must be worse than the screen on the SGS then as the SGS I had had a clearly far better screen than the N1.

Vibrant is a best when it comes to graphics!!

KI my vibrant beats my g1 when it's running on 100mhz in the an3d benchmark app. Thats beasty. Also out also plays asphalt 5hd on 400mhz smoothly. I'd like to see if any snapdragon books do that!! Haha. Even when our phones software suck, they still write on top.

For most games, the CPU isn't the bottleneck, the GPU is.
So it's not surprising you can play a game smoothly on it with the CPU ambitiously underclocked.
The CPU isn't doing most of the work, the GPU is, so the fact that the CPU is underclocked so low doesn't have as much of an impact on performance.
Second gen iPhones didn't have 1GHz CPUs with last gen GPUs in them, and games performed quite well on them, for example...

games for iphone are optimized for the device.. look at the droid X that has the same GPU as the 3GS, but dungeon defenders does not run as smooth on droid X.. why is that?

Android has too many different devices with different hardware, so that means the games codes are not optimized to run and take full advantage of the hardware. Thats why the ps3 has 5 year old hardware and it still had better graphics than some off the high end gaming pcs.

Stable Hardware platform, and stabe device specs.
Also, iOS is just better for game development than Android, though the latter is getting better.

The OS. Apple has engineers and devs working on 3 devices. iPhone, iPod Touch, and the iPad. They have one huge team working on 3 devices that for the most part are nearly identical. Motorola alone has a crap load of phones all on different versions of the same OS that are all spec'ed differently. Assuming that motorola has the same amount of dev's as apple (unlikely), they now have to divide their time between all of their devices. Then we have to look at the devs of the game and find out what they're using as their test device, and then also see if this is just a port or if they built it from the ground up for android. If it's anything like a port from the 360 to a PS3 or vice versa then it makes sense why it runs better on one platform than the other. But I don't really know, i'm just talking out of my arse.

Or because of 'fragmentation'? Adroid doesn't have hardware acceleration yet, so high end 3d games will only work well with powerful gpu like that of galaxy s..

That's most likely because the Galaxy S line has the PowerVR 540 and the Droid 2 / Droid X / iPhone all have a lesser / earlier PowerVR GPU (535). Hence why the Dungeon Defenders description itself list them mid-range and not high-end like the other devices listed.

Galaxy S2: Is graphics noticable crapper compared 2 iPhone 4S??

I am interested in how the graphics compare to the iphone 4S in real life. Like, is it that noticable?
I know the iPhones have optimization and all but with the Mali 400MP will i notice much difference compared 2 the iPhone 4S graphics? Iv seen all the benchmarks and i know iphone 4s is up to 2x faster then Mali 400 but will it be noticable??
It's not really noticeable, but the iPhone 4S is the first phone to have a dual-core graphics chip (gpu) so it can handle any game thrown at it. In my opinion playing games on the S2 is much more enjoyable because of the bigger screen and because of Super Amoled Plus. However if your buying a smartphone for games... then something is wrong with you haha

actually i think the samsungs were the first 2 have a dual core gpu... and alot of people buy a smartphone for games.. its tasken over DS and PSP in market share for handheld gaming...cant argue with statistics
Technically, the A5 chip is better for graphics. However the most important factor here is that games are better on iOS. If you want to play on mobile, go iOS no questions asked. Since the GS2 screen is bigger, it's more comfortable to play, but games are late to release on Android.

and iphone 4s only ha 512mb of RAM.. will that matter?
Only 512 mb of ram will matter in the long run. Even if the games this time next year would be playable thanks to the GPU, they will lag due to the lack of RAM -- otherwise iPhone 5 wouldn't have any selling point.

i have a iphone 4 and galaxy s2 as my main phones, i like playing games a lot and for that i use the iphone, games are smoother, better optimised , better looking ( on retina) and get updated faster if there are problems, that has a simple answer, developers have to develop for 5 hardware versions with are very similar anyway not like on android wich has hundreds of hardware versions, and games are can not be tested on all of them.
Check ShadowGun for Galaxy S2 and judge it for your self

IMO it's very noticeable. My wife has the i4S so I've spent a good bit of time comparing. Gaming is on a whole other level with the i4S. Not sure if it's because the apps are better optimized or the gpu is just that much better. Asphalt 6, shadow gun, dead space all have a richer gameplay experience from graphics, to character control etc. Then you have games like Modern Combat 3 and Real Racing and atm there's just nothing on the android platform that's comparable.
One of the bad things for the Mali MP400(Or in that context the way it's implemented in the Galaxy S II) is its clocking mechanism(It's in no way a mechanism,I know,but I try to simplify things a lot).The GPU's clock must be 800MHz divided by an integer.So the next two options are 400MHz(800/2) and then 267MHz(800/3).So,because 400Mhz is a 50% overclocked state so to speak,Sammy had to stick with 267Mhz.If I remember well,the Tegra 2's Geforce ULP runs at 333Mhz(and still gets pretty much raped) and the overclocked to death version of the PowerVR SGX540 in the RAZR runs at 384MHz and STILL is worse.That's because we are all comparing stock handsets.My SGS2 with 400MHz GPU kicks the crap of all the aformentioned phones.
As for talks about dual-core GPU,it's a little more complex than that.GPUs are from their nature multi-core devices,but not in the way CPUs are.They use pixel shader cores,vertex shader cores and so on.In that manner,the Mali MP400 is quad-core and the GeForce ULP is octa-core.The SGX545 in the iPhone 4S is more like dual GPU.Still,we don't know how it's clocked.Plus,the SII is 6 months older.So,if we also take into consideration that last year's Desire HD with its relatively crappy(Compared to new ones) GPU plays all graphics intensive games smoothly,no,the SII won't suck for a long time.

You can't just talk out of your gut like that.
There's so much to consider in to account. Firstly being the PS3 has a harddrive to compensate for the ram. So that's the hardware dilemma covered.
And the second; there are more console gaming developers than there are mobile gaming developers due to mobile gaming being a new generation and developers would rather go for the easy option than spend hours and resources thinking about what they can fit on a 3.7 inch screen.
The third among many reasons; target audience for consoles are broad. You don't have 5 year olds owning a 4S. Hence momentum on gaming market for consoles is still in it's peak. And if you ask me, playing MW3 or BF3 on an iPhone would be suicidal.

No, the Mali 400 uses 1 vertex unit and 4 pixel units. Having 4 pixel units lead it to be called quad-core (probably for marketing purposes), but it is not true quad core. Hence the reason why the iPhone 4s' true dual-core still outperforms it.

PS3 has 512MB total RAM. It's not the amount that matters, it's how you use it
What I mean is, developers will be optimizing their games for what resources they have. Hence, I don't think there will be any performance problems next year.

If you want to play games, get an iphone 4s, Simple as that. Specs aside (yes GPU wise the a5 is faster than mali400 anyway), iOs is much better for gaming, more games. and higher quality games. not to mention games usually arrive on ios faster than they make it to android.

1/ the ps3 has good cpus/gpus despite the age
2/ the ps3 only runs the game and optimized for gaming (including the dev tools and the apis)
3/the phone runs a lot of other things that the ps3 doesn't even have hardware for (starting by: how do you think the phone receives calls and messages even thus ur playing a game?)
4/the phones also have a runtime on top
5/phones have non voltile memory too
and please realize that ram has nothing to do with raw power, its just a fast access memory. means the more stuff you run the more ram you need.
eventually, ram is used to compensate loading times or how much data you can process at once, but that's not always as relevent
