300ish mb? Is that right?

500

512MB, but all of it isn't usable (or can even be seen by the OS) until Froyo.

Care to elaborate?

Ah... so Verizon's website is wrong... (it lists 384mb) considering this for a work phone, but was put off by the "apparent" lack of memory.
Had been considering this phone vs the Droid X...

Oh crap, then maybe I was wrong?! Did Verizon gimp this phone too like they've done with others before?

325mb of ram
1.3gb of program storage
105mb of personal data storage
It is not a lack of memory at all. Android does a fine job of managing the ram. I have a crap load of apps and games and it only occupies 300mb of the program storage. The ram level is something you will never notice. Unlike windows.
good day. From my voodooed Fascinate using the XDA app.

Sorry, but I disagree from experience. On my Evo I was running Eclair CM which was limited to 3??MB due to Android 2.1. Once I upgraded to Froyo CM 6.0 which opened up all 512MB that the phone had I noticed a huge difference in apps not having to close all of the time. I noticed this on my N1 as well with 2.1 vs 2.2. I may just have to find a way to get my Evo on VZW. :-(
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

Oh, I forgot to mention that you're right about Android doing an excellent job with memory management, I'm just saying that I notice a big difference with 512MB of RAM as far as usability.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

The first explanation is what I was referring to:
http://www.droid-life.com/2010/09/04/how-much-ram-does-the-samsung-fascinate-have/
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

Its 512 but the other site explanation is wrong as hell. It has reserved ram for several things, not just video. It wont be any better with froyo.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

The phone actually does have a full 512. Like adrynalyne said tho a portion of it is used for things such as the cpu, amongst.other things
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

To the best of my knowledge, this phone has 512 MB of RAM total, with 128 MB being reserved for the GPU, and another chunk reserved for other system stuff. ALL the Galaxy S phones are setup this way, not just the Fascinate. Verizon just chose to list the specs differently. And btw, even the Droid X, which is advertised as having 512 MB, does not actually report that it has that much (more like 488, I think), because some is reserved by the system.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

Here's to hoping it really does have 512... As I'm getting one as my work phone...
As an aside, I heard a rumor from our verizon rep that froyo was expected for this phone in november...
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

Froyo is slated for all galaxy phones in November. Samsung verified that today. Also it has 512mb RAM but 128 dedicated to gpu this phone will have the best multimedia solution of any phone on the market. The screen is awesome without a doubt

wow, it never fails to come up. This is one marketing blunder.
They should never have said the RAM amounts because people who aren't technical are getting caught up in the tech. Most of the iphone and some android users just don't understand the specs. They see it as the iphone gets 30 miles per gallon and now Verizon is saying that the Galaxy S only gets 10 miles per gallon. They don't look at how an O.S. uses it or that every Galaxy S gets the same. How and why the Video CPU uses some, why it's frozen for the video, what the RAM stands for, why its' Random access versus read only (ROM).. none of that.
SO lets leave it here. If you don't understand RAM vs ROM, why FROYO's code is optimized to handle more RAM, why M$ XP only truly allocates and sees 640k of ram (less than 1 mb), the difference between 8 and 16 bit access, and have not developed anything using code, then don't question the Fascinate RAM.

Gingerbread? I kind of doubt it will all the the devices that keep coming out. People will be upgrading and there aren't that many CDMA Hero devs as it is.

From what I hear gingerbread will require a 1gz processor 512mb RAM and higher spec gpu. So it'll be like running windows 7 on a Pentium 3.

You heard wrong bro, I gotta say. A mobile OS with reqs that high borderline leaves mobile and move into "very tiny laptop that makes phone calls"
Considering the specs of phones released this year, ones being released this year, and 1.5 ghz dual processors on the way, I wouldn't be surprised.
Do some research, gingerbread is supposed to require the specs mentioned by zenulator, if we some how got it ported to the hero, it would be far from an official release.

Not completely wrong but not right either.
1ghz cpu, 512 ram is the recommended specs for gingerbread.
read here: http://techie-buzz.com/mobile-news/android-3-0-a-k-a-gingerbread-requirements-updated.html
There is definitely a chance of porting it to the Hero someday.
People don't understand the different between "Recommended Specs" and "Required Specs" - I find our customers don't get it all the time at work.
Recommended means - this is what it needs to work well, and probably the minimum to which it is tested.
Required means - If you don't have X,Y, and Z - it ain't gonna work - and if magically it does, don't call me when its having issues.
Honestly, there has been very little confirmation from Google that Ginger Bread will require this, just lots of speculation and rumor. Google stays tight lipped about stuff for a reason, they are publicly traded and anything that slips can effect stock prices (Martha Stewart flash backs any one?)
Hero getting a port of Ginger Bread? It's possible, but the likely hood that the CPU/GPU can handle what they have planned? HIGHLY doubtful. Your holding a device that is 3 releases "old" (eg. Was launched with 1.5, got 2.1 - now can haz 2.2 if its hacked) , thats like asking Microsoft to install Windows 7 on a machine that was originally sold with Windows ME (if you have blocked the existence of ME out of your head, go back to Windows 98 - its not that far off...) Given that example is a little extreme, but most comparisons are - the point still holds true.
The rate of change over the last 1.5 years in the smart phone market has been absolutely incredible, and working for a company who is into Mobile computing - it's a friggin nightmare to keep up. I would dare to say we have beaten Moore's Law in the last year of developments in concern to Mobile - with the exception of the price of devices coming down.

That's lame if true, but it could always be possible that Verizon is only counting the amount of RAM that's actually usable for applications, rather than the whole amount. On the Epic 4G I believe only 325 MB of RAM is used for applications, and the rest is reserved for the system.
phandroid.com/2010/08/27/leaked-samsung-fascinate-equipment-guide-gives-full-spec-run-down/
I think they are referring to 384mb that is usuable ram, since it's stated that there is 512mb total.
It definitely has 512 total. Maybe only 384 usable by eclair. Rest assure this will b just as awesome as the other galaxies. I've had D1, Dx DI, D2, Eris. And I'm using the captivate right now and it blows all of them away. Ill b taking back my captivate and getting the fascinate the day they are available BC att sucks ass. Tried them when my vzw ran out and that was a big mistake. U get what u pay for, and with Verizon that's the beat service in the united states. Can't wait for this phone

There is 384M traditional DRAM and 128M OneDRAM in hummingbird SOC.

Whats confusing is all the material related to the device seems to explicitly state that the Fascinate DOES have less on-board ram.
Verizon is the only one who officially mentioned the RAM in the specs.
So it's very likely all the galaxy s phones have the same RAM size.

I'm a new user who is deeply interested in getting the samsung fascinate for verizon but i still have some doubts that maybe you could help me clear up.
A couple questions I would like answered if possible,
1.) You have confirmed it does have less physical ram, how was this? Are you sure its not 384RAM + 128OneDRAM = 512 total? Please go into detail if possible.
2.) "You have been very happy with the fascinate the past couple days" Does this mean you are currently testing it?
Thanks for any info!
Maybe it is all just a misunderstanding, and it really is just the formatted size, but they are pretty clear when they say 384 megs of ram, not 384 formatted. The other phones are mentioned as having 512. Its even said the fascinate is at a disadvantage. Look it up. I dont have anything to post and I am not a tester, no sorry. I meant ive been happy with its performance as a phone(Galaxy S) is all.

Look, lets settle this here. Look at the picture and it says 512mb flash/384mb RAM. Compare that to explanations of RAM for other phone products. That's 512mb flash RAM with 128 used by......... VIDEO. Every computer without a dedicated video card says the same thing. Go look up video cards with dedicated memory and video cards with shared memory. Obviously Sammy's video cpu uses 128k or RAM and they bundle that with the actual RAM of 384 to say 512. But all Galaxy S have only 384k of Ram to use.
I don't think Samsung has ever officially revealed how much RAM the PowerVR SGX 540 uses, but looks like the cat is out of the bag now. No wonder this Video card is such a beast. I wish i could put it in my laptop.
Ok well I want a fascinate so I looked into this issue. I have a friend with a captivate so I downloaded android system info from the market as well as android hardware info. When looking at the max ram available on the captivate, which is documented at 512, the max available ram was 325. If the fascinate has 384 then we are at an advantage. I'm happy will someone with access to a vibrant test this. I will screen cap and post pics

hardware wise, these phones are nearly identical. While its possible they would screw with the RAM, it's not likely considering how tightly the O.S. it integrated into it. The only phone that had a significant part of its Structure changed was the EPIC, which for some odd reason will only have 1 gig of internal FAST STORAGE. I don't think this will be a killer for the unit, but still odd.

keep in mind too that the Fascinate is CDMA while the Vibrant and Captivate are GSM which are big hardware differences. Possibly one of the reasons why they have 16GB onboard memory and the Fascinate/Epic are only 2GB/1GB on board respectively.

Well that proves it. The droid life chart is crap and inaccurate. It claims 512k ram for the captivate, yet my stock captivate is less than 350k.
Are you surprised that unofficial charts are inaccurate?
That chart is from an official VZW training document. Trust me. Thats not something droidlife whipped up, that came FROM samsung and vzw. Its about as official as you can get. Ive seen these before, and thats when I started this thread, not becuase of the phandroid post (I dont read phandroid). I doubt, (even if it will exist) it will become the "Atrix 2". The Atrix has been out only 7 months (maybe 6?) and it's essentially the same phone with an extra 3 megapixels :/. What would be the point of this phone as a successor?
Atrix Upgrade
The new phone with have a faster 1.2 or 1.5 ghz processor, a larger 4.3 or 4.5" screen, curved edges on the screen, and better camera, and higher video rate.
I dont think this is the time to upgrade since its been announced that quad core phones as fast as 2.5 ghz will be released by xmas. So if you do upgrade now you will be upgrading again shortly. The android market is moving very fast.
Also Gingerbread is running nicely and I am happy with my phone.
Bigger screen, faster processor are upgrades I want. But I would also like my next phone to have a FM radio receiver. The Atrix has one but it does not work. The other exotic upgrade I would like to have is a built in TV receiver. A company in S Korea released a phone with a TV receiver in it but I have not seen it yet. That would certainly be an exotic upgrade and it could be a while before one is released here in the USA.
I also look forward to Ice Cream Sandwich but wil wait for the OTA release of that which officially be in November.
Not even an upgrade to be worthy as the ATRIX successor. More pixels, higher clocked chip, most likely a larger screen....ill pass and stay with my current oc'd ATRIX

I shared my thoughts on the Atrix 2 here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-2-upgraded-with-lte-photos
Why is there a 4G icon with signal blips? AT&T and Moto use the "H+" for HSPA+. Maybe this thing will have LTE after all is said and done. It is most definitely discouraging to hear "no LTE," though.
I didn't see a fingerprint sensor... so if I'm correct and there isn't one, that would mean the only upgrade is the camera. No wonder Google bought Motorola Mobility, I wouldn't want a company like that representing the Android brand :/

Have you guys seen what motorola does over on Verizon for its droids? DROID 1 DROID 2 and DROID 3 are all incremental updates. DROID x to DROID x2 as well. Why wouldn't Moto make a slightly different phone and call it new? Every phone manufacturer does this from Htc to Motorola to Apple.

All you have to do is look at nvidia's "Roadmap" of the tegra chips to see whats happening with them and what their plans are. Here is a link so you can see for yourselves, http://blogs.nvidia.com/2011/02/teg...-chip-worlds-first-quadcore-mobile-processor/ Anyway looking like you upgrade in 2012 than 2013 etc considering according to their roadmap they have new stuff coming every year up to 2014. Regardless though if it is a supposed "Atrix 2" seems sorta pointless considering what we can already do with a rooted unlock Atrix granted not like your layman would know any different.
Is it just me. Or is there no fingerprint reader?

The Atrix was a pretty big leap in terms of mobile technology when it came out and is still extremely competitive with other Dual Core phones especially with the custom ROM's.
My thoughts should be that the Atrix 2 should be released when it makes another big jump in terms of technology, not miniscule upgrades.

Cause thats definitely true. But the phone is off sprint's line up, they have no reason to.
Yea the Shift could definitely be updated on power specs, but HTC said from the beginning no current phones are getting sense 4.0. The shift doesn't have the imagesense chip so it wouldn't be able to take advantage of the camera features anyway which was a major part of Sense 4.
But theirs definitely no ICS coming to this phone officially. HTC said phones with 512mb of ram wouldn't be updated

Does this mean we wont be getting Jellybean?? Or if we do is 1GB going to be insufficient to get the most out of what we were led to believe was the best phone on the market.

All s3 with 2GB ram will only be dual core, all s3 with 1GB ram will get quad core.
you decide what you want.
Even the Nexus S is getting jelly bean.
The 2GB of RAM is because the S4 processor in those phones is more memory hungry.
It has nothing to do with Jellybean.
At all.
We have known for a while now that the American versions are getting 2Gbs because of their CPU/GPU.

Like people said, the better processor will balance out the lower RAM.
RAM is for keeping things in a handy place that the device can quickly recall, to save it delay of reopening and closing things constantly. An S3.4x (I'll use this as shorthand for quad core) will reach its memory limit faster than an S3.2x, having to put things in swap instead. But the S3.2x doesn't have as good a processor: it wouldn't be able to cope with reopening/closing applications as well as the S3.4x can.
Also, since processor power consumption is not linear, but exponential, the S3.4x can keep all the processors at half the speed each of the S3.2x's would be, when it does need to reopen apps. This will consume less power than the dual core would performing the same task.
So yeah, a 1GB version can't keep remember as many things as the 2GB one. But the 1GB version will finish tasks faster giving it less to need to remember.
Yeah the Korean version has both. But imagine what that will cost! It has that on top of a TV tuner (one which won't work outside South Korea by the way).
Ummm ... I was so angry I didn't read the part about it only having a dual core ...lol. I feel better now.
Lesson learned ... read WHOLE article in future!

Lol I'm in America and bought the international quad. 2GB will barely ever be used

Yeah 2GB is damn useless for now, I always have at least 100mb free whatever I'm doing, Android ram management is impressive. Maybe it will change in the next years but for now it's useless but maybe quadcore will be a must have in the next years and dual core will not be enough who knows, anyway since int version will have the best support (official support and dev support from the community) that's the one for me, GPU and audio chip made helped me to decide. Both are almost equal imo.
Seriously guys. That story is bull****. Do you really think that Samsung, the maker of the last two nexus phones and last years best/best selling phone, didn't know about the requirements for jelly bean??
Seriously??
The f*ckin nexus s is getting JB, it has 512mb of ram, 360mb usable.
That story is crap.

Feeling duped as a UK buyer? Dude we get the better cpu, gpu and dac. Honestly doubt that 2gb would make much difference.
