Touchwiz - Epic 4G General

So the other galaxy s phones have touchwiz 3.0 and the epic has 2.5? Why would they take away all the internal storage and dumb down the software?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

A quick search and you'll discover that the Epic has TW 2.5 because of the phyiscal keyboard, which uses landscape mode more often than the other phones in the Galaxy S Series. TW 3.0 was not fully optimized enough for landscape mode at the time of release.
The choice was to further delay the release of the phone or use a modified version of TW 2.5, and most of us are happy to have the phone with 2.5 than have no phone at all.
If you must have 3.0, I suggest a different phone on a different carrier or wait to purcahse our Epic after the update (date TBA)...

I know very little about touchwiz except from playing with the epic so can someone tell me what touchwiz 3 provides over 2.5?

Im roaming in a 1xrtt area so searching for things is a nono. And im only asking a question, no need to get defensive bruh. But anyways, so the other galaxy s' cant use landscape mode as efficiently? Or just the home screen?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

I think touchwiz 3.0 is just alot more eyecandy like the puzzle lock screen and the updated media player. Idk im not well versed in touchwiz. I wish they gave an option to go vanilla. I hated when they took that option off from the hero when they updated it to eclair

It's part eyecandy and part functionality. 3.0 supports changing the icons at the bottom bar and adding and removing pages from the home screen, for starters. 3.0 is a nice jump ahead of what 2.5 offers.

I have 3.0 on mine...

If you are talking about the team I think you are, they said they are waiting for official froyo to do it..
Once official froyo source drops. Things will go more smoothly.. its amazing that our devs here have made the progress they have given the lack of necessity available.

I was just about to make a thread asking about the development of this Galaxy Sense we heard about last month.
With launcher pro a custom dock and beautiful widgets you can make your homescreens look just like the sense ui if you want it for the ascetics or as a placeholder til it gets ported

Yeah I know alot of people like it pure google.
but to me it just isnt appealing or as functional.
the hero was my first android device so I did get spoiled
with htc sense. Just to my likings that it brought a better
experience and refresh to the Android interface. Widgets and apps.
I prefer it over TW. There are just a few things I prefer TW
over sense per say.
I think the rom was released and then discontinued for the galaxy s i9000 due to the devs having muliple issues that they were not able to resolve. Link to post --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877902
The only thing I ever liked about Sense UI were the widgets and the Weather effects.
With LauncherPro, you can get pretty much identical widgets, and then Beautiful Widgets will give you the same look of the clock widget. Plus, LauncherPro is infinitely customizable and you can do pretty much anything with it....
Sense UI has always been extremely laggy and slow in all the times I've used it, as a ROM port on my Nexus, and also stock on the Evo/Hero.
Wouldn't mind trying it out again on my Epic though!
The older version of fancy widget is also a wonderful alternative to the sense clock/weather widget.

I agree, I'm running MikG, it runs great and gave me great battery life...with stock kernel...

Also Running MikG with stock Kernal and the Sense 3.0 is pretty solid. Lock Screen slide to open apps would be nice, but otherwise its really complete and my favorite rom out there currently.

One thing you have to keep in mind, is that it's not sense 3.0 that was taking up all the space, but instead it was the 3d apks, such as the fusions which alone was taking up 49mb, yes granted be those apks play a big role in the new sense, but would the be required for our phone, probably not.

I doubt it, you need at least sense 2.1 for those 3.0 elements to work. EVO is still on sense 1.0.
Lmao.

Then we get information that MIGHT mean some kind of sense update and everyone just refers to an aftermarket ROM...
Silly.

Help me keep my Epic!

I've had my Epic for about a few days now and I'm starting to feel like I made the wrong choice. I chose mostly on the hardware, than the software. The battery drains like the phone has a hole in it, the TW UI is just bad and I can't use the regular launcher. I'm sure this phone would be better with pure android. So what should I do? ROMs, Kernals, etc. Thanks in advance!

There's definitely a nice selection of Kernels and ROM's available, take a look at the development section, read through some of the features of the different ones available, and see if you find one you'd like to try.
In the end, whether you keep the phone or return it for a Nexus, is all up to you... none of us can really answer this for you, because we all have different wants and needs in our phones.
And fwiw, software side of this phone can be easily modified/customized, so if you're happy with the hardware, then perhaps you should look into the software customization.

A good tip to remember...if you do go the custom ROM route, some have no journaling. If you choose one of those, make sure you power down phone completely and don't let battery die or you will get force closes out the arse. If this my be an issue for you, get a ROM with journal on or flash the journal on mod after flashing the ROM.

Syndicate Rom. It's absolutely awesome and very few bugs with almost all features working that I have noticed. Turns the Epic into the EPIC!!!!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Go with SyndicateROM Frozen. The 1.1 version needs updating ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091680 ) on the ClockworkMod. The 1.2 version ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131544 ) requires the latest ClockworkMod ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115999 ). You need to flash modem to EC05 with Odin.
What I did was flashing modem to EC05, put the first CWM on the phone, then installed SynROM Frozen 1.1. After that, I updated the CWM, then updated to 1.2. I think the 1.2 is not full package (?) and upgrade from the 1.1 (?). Rodderik will update the 1.2 version with latest CWM. You can either wait for that update or continue with the steps that I did toward the 1.2 version.
Edit - SynROM Frozen 1.1 comes with ClockworkMod included. When you get it installed, just update the ClockworkMod (what I did was using the flash method with Odin) then upgrade to 1.2 version.

You had it partially right. Hardware is paramount simply because you can replace the software with better software but you can't replace what drives it. Root your phone with the new purple CWM and then give the Syndicate rom a try. What kernel you choose for it depends on your phone since they each take to certain kernels differently. I am personally using the second to last version of the Genocide kernel and voltage control with great results.
Think of the rom as a car's body that you can choose to option and the kernel as its engine.
I prefer Go Launcher over Launcher Pro and Handcent over all the others available.
If you want incredible battery life download an app called DataSwitch by TomatoX.
Make sure to enable journaling too.

I thought the same thing when I first started using tw... If your taking about the launcher I won't argue. But the rest of tw is pretty good. Built in task manager that clears ram, the dialer is dope. Contacts list is very functional, U can swype right on a name to call our left to txt. Also easy to navigate if u have alot of contacts. Hold your finger on the right in portrait mode to jump through letters, than if, lets say you know alot of T's when u get to T, slide your finger to the left and you can sort by the second letter (feel free to say thanks). If your in to facebook the buddies now and whatever other things are built in to the tw launcher (though if u change launchers you lose those widgets) activities in contacts links your fb friends, the... Does... And u can... With... And so on and so on and so on... theres alot to learn that u wrong in a few days... I've had mine since release day and I just found out... Yesterday... long story short, u only get one chance to trade ur phone in. Use the whole 30 days before u decide
P.s. u can change your screen brightness by long pressing the notification bar and sliding left to right. But u gotta have auto brightness turned off (thanks ↓)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1207197
I don't think any devs are interested in porting it anyway, I tried it and the new mysense was boring and kinda sucked IMO, the regular 3.0 is better.
