also wonder why they didnt pick up the i9000m (better phone) like the bell version?

Yep, the big 3 tel companies pretty much have the market all to themselves thanks to the CRTC. No competition = crap deals for the consumer.

You have no freaking idea buddy. A few years ago we were paying activation fees which I believe were around $7. On top of that we have to pay for voice mail and caller ID, a package which you can get for $10-15 and which I believe is already included in US plans. Plus they make you pay to use tethering if you don't have a plan that's > 500MB and you also have to pay for the use of the front facing camera.
Basically the big 3 (Bell, Telus and Rogers) are huge shysters.
Edit: I think my old plan came out to around $50 for 350min + national 10 + VM and CID. That's a Telus plan with system activation fee and all that crap.
Well, I've already got an unlocked Bell Vibrant running on Rogers. Granted, buying it out right was kinda painful but I'd rather get the better hardware.
As for pricing, Rogers does have terrible pricing unless you've been with them for a while. Side note, if you're signing up with Rogers or upgrading, you have until September 30th to get 6GB data as a $30 add-on. The deal also applies to Fido.
why do you guys prefer bells i9000's over the captivate?

I don't care about video calling at all, I can't think of a single time I would use that.
I would't drop $500 on a phone just to have it feel cheap, and have everyone walk up to me saying "is that the new iphone?"
LMAO it happens to me all the time, "wow is that new iphone" then i point to the big silver samsung logo and they are like "OMG what phone is that!"
is not having the front facing camera the only difference?
can the bell version (i9000M) still flash the i9000 firmware from the US models?
I believe the captivate is also missing fm radio, not sure though.

no we know it is a phone related thing i read some of the threads on it when i was thinking of getting one.. they worked around it with alternate kernels from i9000 but then the rotation and buttons were hosed up.. dont remember if they ever totally worked around it.. i think maybe with a custom kernel
wow! that explains a lot why the I9000M version is so popular down in the south
knowing Rogers they will have Samsung Lock down the phone so its hard to do anything with.. like root. try different roms.

I think it's more like $150-$200 difference without a contract.
With the Galaxy S you get a front-facing camera, as well as an unlocked phone without carrier logos plastered on the front - which alone might be worth it to many.
I also much prefer the large middle button on the Galaxy S, than the 4-button array on the carrier phones.
I understand the front facing camera and I much prefer the design of the I9000 but if I buy Captivate it will be with 2yr contract and I don't know if it is enough to justify the extra cash especially if I cannot upgrade to iPhone 4 and sell for profit.
If my Samsung Captivate is rooted the software on both devices will be the same correct?

Do you live in an area with 1900mhz 3g coverage? If not, you will be able to use only edge with the i9000.
I bought the SGS for AT&T because of the front camera, no AT&T tampering, and I prefer the SGS look over the Captivate. Also, I don't live anywhere near 3g, so I'm okay with just edge. But it did cost me an arm and a leg.
Is there a map where I can see 850 mhz v 1900 mhz I found one but it is old
A map would be great.
In my part of Los Angeles, I get 3G/H on AT&T probably 70% of the time, the rest is E.
well I decided to purchase the Samsung Captivate, but would still like a map in case I decide to switch within 30 days
It might also be possible for you to get the dumb phone data plan if you have an international version of the Galaxy S because AT&T probably wouldn't have their IMEI numbers... But then again, I'm not 100% sure on how they do their sweeps so dont quote me on this
Afaik you won't be able to use custom roms, becouse of diffrences that captivate has. So yes its worth to pay more...

Most importantly, the international model is 900/2100 mhz only while at&t is 850/2100 mhz. So big difference in radios

The hardware is different. The i9000 does not support the AWS bands.
Only one that does, is the vibrant.
You're giving up a camera you'll probably never use, or you're stuck with edge.
Easy choice.

Thank you for the help.. or change providers...
But CDMA providers like Sprint are out of the question, right? Only AT&T?
Although the majority seems to be waiting for the wifi xoom. I wonder if is just me waiting for the gsm model. I have the galaxy tab unlocked from tmo which I used without any problems recently in Germany. +1 Grand Master Silicon. LOL.
But seriously, yes I'd want a GSM model to be able to put in a SIM card, but only if it had all bands, not just 1900/2100 for T-mobile. I'd like to have it be capable for all bands but we can dream right?
They're already making a GSM Xoom, but its being released in Germany first. We already know the GSM exists its just up to Verizon to decide when to release the grip on Motorola's balls for the US launch.

There's a thread (... or two?) where people have been playing around with turning their devices into GSM devices, some with more success than others. I personally wish it had been released with GSM/UMTS (provided it's unlocked and quad-band) as I travel a fair amount to GSM countries and it'd be nice to buy a local SIM and use my Xoom there, too. If such a device is released for the US market I'll probably get one, if there's a large enough gap between that one and the Xoom 2 (or maybe that'll be the one they release as GSM?)
The hardware does appear to be there in the CDMA VZ version (the same chip is used for both, but based on what one hacker has done, there's apparently some minor remaining issues with the baseband code).
Just get an MZ601? They're quadband, and everything.

I'd be really happy if it does come on at&t bands because all of Canadia works on the same bands
that doesnt mean anything.. the stock sgs ii has att bands and just becuase it is going through fcc approval doesnt mean it is att requesting the approval.. could just be samsung getting it approved as it does all its phones.
Either way he can use it just fine, so it's a lot to get excited about
he could use it without fcc's approval...
also engadget was really slow this is friday's news
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_gal...mode_i708_prototype_hit_the_fcc-news-2412.php
what did you think? ffc doesn't work on sundays
Well I for one happy about this.
I held out for waiting for the atrix, but in the end it just wasn't enough for me. I have a captivate and have enjoyed having it rooted and running froyo way before AT&T and sammy got off their ass.
i fully expect the s2 to have all the same bands that the galaxy s1 had, and the omnia hd also had, the same quadband coverage, dont expect anything to change here. because they are the most widely used bands, perfect for an international model.
Oh man, this is getting harder and harder.
Is going to be either SGS2 or iP5.
So difficult.
i still believe S2 will be compatible to all providers, like S1,,
make the base of fight with ip5,,
using tegra2 to ensure the quantity for sale ,, which makes sense.
This was known for a while now, that the Galaxy S 2 wwould work on ATT 3G bands. What is not known is whether ATT will pick up the phone or not.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
They would be fools not to pick it up.
Phones are just bait to get and keep subscribers. The phone should be a great device.
If this is a AT&T only phone, there is no justice in the world.
The international version works on AT&T.
Even if some US Carriers carry it, it will suck in comparison. Look at the Captivate/Vibrant compared to the i9000.
Yeah, that is true.
If AT&T does get they will probably request that sammy retard the phone some how. Like taking away some of the radios or no front facing camera.
I'm hoping they wont do that this time, but they probably will find some way to screw it up.
Agreed! I won't ever buy a AT&T retarded phone again, if there is an international one available I will pay extra for it. Like the Captivate vs i9000.

I completely understand if you guys didn't dig into FCC documents to read what they said, I don't blame you, but just to clarify, the device passed is an 850/1900 ONLY phone, meaning it can only be for AT&T or Canadian carriers.
Other versions will likely be released, but the version that passed FCC is not going to work on other US carriers.

We'll have to see if they strip out features again. FFC is a must, and I don't think they'll strip that out. I think they took that out last time because the network wasn't ready for video calling. They wanted HSPA+ prior to letting people use video calling. Other phones AT&T sells have an FFC now, so I don't think the SGS2 will be any different.
Other than that, what, FM radio and no HSUPA? AT&T SAYS they are going to start rolling out HSUPA, we'll see, if not I'm sure a radio swap with an international version will work again. And FM radio would be a nice addition, but I certainly won't make a decision on a phone over it. I can always use TuneIn and iheartradio if I really want to listen to my ****ty local stations. Oh, and a flash on the camera. That one actually may sway my decision to buy it if they don't include a flash. That was one of the stupidest things I've seen, but I found that I don't care about flash for pictures as much as I do for a flashlight. Most cell phone pictures taken with flash look like crap anyway.
I would go for an international version if they were at least somewhat reasonable in price, but I'm not paying $700-800+ USD for an international version.
Anyway, I hope they will hurry up. I have an upgrade that I'm itching to use!

Because I don't want to spend that much on a phone right now. I just bought an iPad 2 as my latest toy, so I have to limit myself. Depending on the cost on AT&T, I'm up for upgrade price plus $50 off. If it hits a $200 price point again I can probably get it for $150. Telus will let you buy it online outright for a whopping $779.
Bell has it at $729 but requiresa $30 mtm contract and $35 setup fee.
Does not seem to be available on Rogers yet.
I'm glad I ordered from Expansys. Almost $100 cheaper and unlocked. I hate these bas****s and am really want to get to the point where I am not locked into them by virtue of the hardware. Rogers is terrible - I have a family plan (four phones on it) so any time we do an HUP, the contract period on ALL the phones gets reset. I have stopped buying locked in phones and am a year away from making them work to keep my business. I regret having left Telus when the iPhone was first released by Rogers in Canada. They had gone out of their way to keep me as a customer - to the point where I had some amazing free customer loyalty freebies. Currently I have nada from Rogers in that regard.
