Cnet Prizefight - Epic vs. Evo - EVO 4G General

Nothing groundbreaking, but a fun vid. They give Evo a slight edge.

nice video..good stuff...

The fact that HTC is about to release an update for the EVO after their froyo update, and Samsung hasn't even gotten Froyo yet is enough for me to put the EVO way in the lead.

This and the fact that flagship HTC phones always get 10x the community support.
The insides (hardware/specs) of the Epic 4G are way better but outside (software/build) is just blah.

^ Hero vs. Moment all over again. I'll never make the mistake of choosing Samsung over HTC again.

To defend the epic it hasn't been out to long. How long did it take HTC to get out froyo for the evo...what 2 plus months. The community for the Epic too is far ahead of what the community was a the same time for the Hero. So if it is that important to you that you have a larger e-penis then I fully understand your bias and random facts...

Samsung shouldve just put Froyo on the Epic to begin with...

Nope nothing to do with e-penis. Has to do with the fact that I know HTC has better support for their phones than Samsung.
My friend has the epic, I think it has one of the best hardware keyboards out there the Super AMOLED screen is awesome, and the processor is great. With all that being said, I have no faith in Samsung taking care of the phone as much as HTC does.
And if you want to go by your line of thinking the Samsung Galaxy S line has been out longer than the HTC EVO and not ONE of them has Froyo on them officially yet.
HTC has put froyo on quite a few different models so far, and Samsung can't do it on their one line of phones that's supposed to be their top of the line phone which has already shipped 1 million units in the US alone.

Yes, but the htc was initially released with android 1.0, and froyo wasn't released for another month. But epic was released 2 months AFTER froyo was released, and they have plenty of time to recode it for froyo and then release it. So in total it's been 3 months since froyo was released and epic doesn't have it atm.

And Sprint/HTC were the first to rollout Froyo. (Google pushed it for the Nexus One).

Before I click the link, knowing cnet I bet they mentioned iPhone several times lol.

To debunk you, the Galaxy S line of phones has been out across multiple carriers and countries for as long as the Evo has been out. There are only two minor differences between other Galaxy S phones and the Epic - hardware keyboard and WiMax. They could have pushed out a Froyo update by now but Samsung is just full of fail.

I regret even trying to post in this thread. I forgot it was on the Evo part of this forum and if one bad thing is even voiced or implied about any phone here then your just a total uneducated imbecile...apologies for trying to add some right to your guys left.
Ill go somewhere else.

I was really only upset about the part that you were implying that my opinion had to do with me worrying about the size of my e-penis.
Hardware wise the Galaxy S is undeniably a better phone, but from my experience (and yes I've owned Samsung phones too), Samsung is horrible with software. Back in the old days software wasn't a huge part of cell phones, but today, no matter how good the hardware, bad software will make a phone bad. I'm not implying the Galaxy S software is bad, I actually kinda like touchwiz, but I'm worried about how long Samsung will have people like my friend stuck on 2.1.
I made no opinion on the Galaxy S hacking community since I have no experience on what they're doing.

To end this debate, I have the largest e-penis.

To be honest I am worrried about samsungs support too. I really want them o support it. They just released an update. And another one is coming soon for the gps so they are doing something. froyo is just. Little off. I don't even want to talk aboujt gingerbread. Apologies for saying you were trying to enlarge your epenis...immature on my part!

no one here is saying anything about the phone itself. Everyone knows the hardware is at the top of the pyramid. The only reason the evo vs epic threads happen is because of the software portion. We know that evo is behind in hardware, but the software/updates make up for that. And to a normal user, the software part is what matters. The main argument between the evo vs epic thread is about the horrible support samsung has done in the past. No one knows if samsung will turn it around for epic, but it's looking like that so far. (this is coming from seeing an article about a new samsung galaxy S phone coming out, and it looks like the epic will be left behind just like all the other galaxy S line was left with gps/capacitative buttons/etc..
Personally thats why I didn't buy the phone. I'm still within my 30 day limit and can get it in a snap, but I just dont trust samsung, just like the thousands, if not millions of other people, that have gotten screwed by their older phones (instinct mainly).
but then again, even if samsung were to release the froyo update, most wouldn't switch because of the development support here. If froyo is released, and if htc doesn't release gingerbread to us before that, then I will admit that the epic is a better phone from top to bottom (minus the screen, 4.3 beats the **** out of anything), but I just don't see that happening.

both are great phones but it comes down to this
physical keyboard

From my own experience, the epic was an epic fail. I had one the day they were released and my touch buttons didn't respond unless I put a considerable amount of force on em. My wife got one the same day and her epic didn't have that problem, so I thought I can live with it, but alas, it got to the point where it wouldn't respond at all at times. But, that wasn't the deal breaker. The slide mechanism started coming loose and I could feel the screen flopping as I typed which was unbearable to I returned it for another.
The Second Epic I had seemed okay, or so I thought. I brought it home charged it, ran through the setup and yada yada and everything was kosher. Until I tried to charge it while at work. I almost ran it dead and plugged it in, an hour later I went to check on it and it had the battery symbol with a thermometer flashing. Tried to pick it up and it was burning hot. Unplugged, let it cool, turned it on and it was so laggy I couldn't even get the dialer to come up. So I returned that one too, lucky for me they just had a new shipment of Evos come in so I snatched one up while I could.
Two epics to one evo, my money's on the Evo.

Im jumping onto the Evo!!!! I am returning my Epic tmmrw and then ordering an Evo, I just need a PHONE and not a supercomputer in my pocket, not saying the Evo isnt great and fast, I just dont need what the Epic has to offer at this time, community is more important than the Screen hahaha

Anyone thinking of getting Epic 4G

Now that we know the Epic 4G is officially coming to sprint is anyone returning their evos?
Personally i think:
Epic 4G wins in:
graphics processing
CPU processing
Display (even though evos in bigger)
Evo 4G wins in:
Developers/XDA community (biggy for me)
Phone look (its just sexyyy)
High Res cam in front and back
Sense (even though i prefer vanilla)
Epic 4G loses in:
****ty Samsung Android "skin" w.e its called
SAMSUNG!!
No Devs.....
Evo 4G Loses in:
30 FPS - although a fix has been made thanks to our devs
There were more issues at launch but all of been fixed minus the screen separation which HTC is "looking into"......
So what do you guys say?

Epic 4g is still going to be a WIN... i wouldnt trade my EVO for it... but i def. will get one when its out... it will eventually catch on here at XDA... hell there is Dell and Motorolas on here now... why not samsung...
about the samsung touchwiz crap... think about it... all it is is a skin over vanilla...??? freaking 1/2 the people here are always crying about how much sense sucks anyway... so why not...
i have been reading how its being knocked about not having all the "social" crap of sense... obviously the person writing that has not looked at the market for a long long while... or forgot that this isnt an iphone...
Epic will be as good as the EVO if not better simply because of the hummingbird processor...
Depending on the price I'm getting one as a spare

I switched from T-Mobile for the Evo, I have -no idea- how their upgrade system works. Do you think I'll be able to upgrade, given I -just- started my contract with them?
Me and another guy went to return our EVO's today, in light of the EPIC, well, the fact we went in yesterday for the same ****, but my buddy running the store told me yesterday they have no info at all on release date..
He got some info from Sprint today, release date is "black friday" the last friday before thanks giving...
Hell of a long time to wait, regardless if I could of returned my EVO, put my sprint service on a **** phone, and kept my 2 year upgrade/new contract eligability available until the EPIC comes out...
5 months? To hell with that. Ill probally be able to sell my EVO in a little bit shy of 100$ of what the epic will cost me in full. so to hell with it, We kept our EVOs.
I hate sense. I cant stand the 30FPS cap, I never use the HDMI the way i thought it would be implemented, and that extra $10 fee for .. well, nothing is kind of starting to bother me the more I think about it.
In the end, evo still crushes my other friends iphone4, even though their so ****ing stupid and wont accept anything besides there own opinion, and just tried to laugh at the evo apparently. i-d-i-o-t-s.
..still most of me likes the nexus more but tmobile just sucks in my area.
you will not have to wait till the black friday... by that time (end of summer / fall) we will be playing with nVidia Tegra powered phones running in the neighborhood of 1.2ghz to 1.5ghz natively ... that can push 1080p with a breeze and have better battery life than snapdragon powered devices ... unfortunately 1st run of nVidia Tegra powered phones will be windows 7 instead of android ...
looks like a childs toy, untill they make a proper phone with keyboard that doesn't look like it comes from fisher price I say nay to thee!

damn...black friday..that is too long to wait
Black Friday is the day AFTER Thanksgiving what would put it at November 26th.
"The EVO 4G, while having an impressive set of specifications, still runs a 65 nm chip that is less power efficient and pales in terms of graphics performance when compared to the Galaxy S." http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=17125 good read comparing the processors, Super AMOLED is way better, colors, battery, everything, and the hummingbird has a superior GPU and is only a 45nm compared to our 65nm. HTC has always been about numbers, get the 1GHz processor, 8MP camera, 4.3" screen, but not always the best quality of them. the Epic may be better in some respects.
I wouldn't give my EVO for an EPIC right now though, xda, quality and reliability of HTC hardware, and sense (menus and contacts, not widgets) are just to good to pass up. Also, I don't really like any hardware keyboard after the TP2, samsungs is still not on the same level. samsungs sometimes feel cheap, HTC's feel and look like higher quality devices.
Its Apples and Oranges, just get your Bananas out of here.
*EDIT*
Also I have heard from Sprint Reps the EPIC will be out no later than August, more likely mid July.
Additionally CLEAR will be starting phone services this year and have announced HTC and Samsung devices, most likely these two.
Hardware keyboards are one thing (I tend to not like them), but horizontal hardware keyboards are just terrible. Am I the only one that almost never holds their phone horizontally?
I'll keep my EVO, or go with the standard Galaxy S, as long as it can go Vanilla.
sorry, im an htc guy

Ya know I had my EVO 4G for like 3 weeks and then i Traded it in for an iPhone 4 I just had to see what the hype was about and see if the battery thing was true....its not i charge this **** 2 times a day just like my evo (Biggest Mistake of my Life I had that signal issue rly bad) but im kindda stuck for now because i want to ether get the white EVO 4G or the Epic but i need a Release date id hate to get stuck in a ATT contract cuz they suck here in NYC im praying for a July 15 Surprise Release Date
thats when the New Rim phones Drop and the Droid X and the White EVO Golden Day?
I was interested in this phone also until I did a bit more research on custom roms etc. There won't be any!
Apparently Samsung has some kind of security on the phone that you can't touch the drivers. From what I read its impossible to do ANYTHING without the drivers.
It doesn't look good at all for custom roms etc on the Samsung. Just not worth losing all the custom things on my EVO.
I can tell the OP never had a Samsung phone the Moment which is also a Samsung phone does have a development community behind it, Google SDX-Developers.
Also the skin can be replaced easily and cooking an AOSP ROM isn't exactly hard. Two big pluses I can't get over that keep ringing in my head are the sexy as hell SUPER AMOLED screen and the Hummingbird processor, which spanks the Snapdragon in every benchmark.

Wow, you have no idea what you're talking about no offense, Samsung phones have been rooted and modified for a long long time there is no special settings or protection. And a kernal HAS to be produced by law, since Android is an Open Source project.
Look for yourself, wow no community at all:

Did I say anything about root? What does root have to do with drivers?? Maybe you need to do some research!! Samsung has their own security on the phone to protect their drivers!! This is a fact. Go read the Samung Galaxy S forums that are right here and thats been the case with past Samsung phones.
I didnt mention kernel either. Did you even read my post?

If that's been the case with past Samsung phones, then why are there like 20+ custom ROMs for the Moment alone that work perfectly fine with original drivers and are completely different from stock builds.
I know this because I came from a Moment been rooting/flashing/hacking it since the day it was released, this is the first I've ever heard of anything like this and it was never a problem then, unless this is new for the Galaxy S line which I doubt.
Also the reason I brought up custom ROMs was because you brought them up:

Trade Epic for Evo????

Guys I need your opinions, I have had the EPIC since launch day, after to switching to sprint from a Nexus One on T-Mobile. Sure I like the keyboard, but find myself using it say 50 percent of the time and other 50 the onscreen. But what makes me want to return it for the Evo are these Reasons:
1. Android 2.2 – Already available on Evo
2. Custom Roms – Many already developed on Evo
3. HTC- I feel they push updates much faster, and work harder to polish there UI.
4. SAMSUNG- They already have gave us a Touch Wiz that is only a watered down version of the ones on the other Carriers, Cant change the icons on dock, No media or clock apps that the other Touch Wiz 3.0 phones have, and Finally UPDATES! They have announced 2.2 on there tablet and already has it working on it… Where is our 2.2?
5. CASES, putting a case on the Epic makes it look huge like a brick, and not very form fitting.
What’s your guys opinions? I mean I like the phone, im just so scared of it being left behind of the dust because Samsung wont fulfill there development promises, While HTC has a pretty good track record for moving updates fast.
I'm in EXACTLY the same boat.
Came from a Nexus on Tmo, to Sprint. Love the Epic dearly, but am still worried about it being supported by Samsung.
The Evo is a step down from the Epic to be honest, but a high powered device is nothing if the manufacturer doesn't continue to support it!
How are they not supporting it? They just did an update yesterday, and have already said Froyo IS coming. What more do you want?
The Evo is a step backwards as the Snapdragon CPU is slower, and the graphics are incredibly inferior to the PowerVR GPU inside the Epic.
I used to have an Evo, and when it first came out it had its own issues as well. I'd say you should stay on board at least until day 29, and then see how you feel about it.

How the **** can Samsung and sprint release a phone that has a few major bugs:
1. After 24 hours (or less) the gps doesn't work unless you reboot (or use a program to flush data) the phone.
2. 3g uploads (99% of the country uses 3g) are capped at 150k
3. when you upload ANYTHING the phone studders like john the studderer on the howard stern show ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yBI8zdqLzw&feature=related )
I'm pretty pissed to be honest.
I came from a Evo. To tell you the truth, I prefer the Epic over the Evo. 30fps caps and a weak gpu. I couldn't even explain to you how bad it was, the Epic blows everything away in the Evo, besides the development of course.
Pros:
Evo development
Kickstand
Bigger screen? (I don't have a preference, but it's noticeably larger)
HTC Sense (I hate it, then love it.)
Works with any type of mic headset. <3
Cons:
In call sound is pretty low, I had to turn it all the way up and still couldn't hear other people well. (I had 2 Evo's, both were the same in call quality)
30 fps cap. It can be fixed with a kernel, still 30 fps cap is pretty low for such a great phone.
Gpu lags, games like N.o.v.a was playable, but not smooth as it is on the Epic.
The touch screen wasn't as accurate. Miss type a lot more on the Evo than the Epic.
No support for direct media playback. The epic does this flawlessly, I don't even have to convert videos.
The screen is washed out. The HTC Hero was noticeably more colorful.
Horrible wifi signal.
Not to bash on the Evo, I loved it, but it wasn't what I was looking for. If you enjoy a great development scene. I say go all in for it. It's a great phone. Though I left it for a better phone, Epic 4g.

What more do i want? Since i had 2.2 on my nexus one in May, i want 2.2 on an epic. lol. And its the point, if they take this long for 2.2 now, will they even update it to the next version of android that Google will be updating q1 next year? And why the watered down Touch Wiz? Clock app and music player for example, have you seen the apps on Vibrant. We do not have touch wiz 3.0 its like 2.5ish. Your write about waiting tell day 29 though to have a strong decision. I probably just want to much to fast.

Im in the same boat, although i havent officially left tmo yet. I did however return my epic 4G after 4 days and ordered an EVO, and im thinking of canceling that and just sticking with my HD2 and Nexus One. I just dont trust samsung and there update history. Yes they released the update yesterday but of course that was fast cause it generates money for them.
Besides the battery taking forever to charge, i really have no other issues with the phone. Its one of the best i ever owned, i just wish i had more confidence in samsung and i really hope they prove me wrong.
I will admit i will miss not having to convert movies for it, thats what i loved most about my N900.

What?
I came from the HTC Hero. Ask any other Hero user how quickly HTC pushes out updates and how "polished" they are...
HTC doesn't do any better than any other company. The thing is, they have community support. The ONLY reason that the Hero was bearable was because of the dev community (which made the phone amazing).
Like several people have said, Samsung already put out an update for this phone (two, if you count the weird launch day update). They've promised 2.2 sometime this year (October was the last time frame I heard). The EVO didn't launch with 2.2 either, remember? The Nexus One is Google's baby and is going to get updates before any other phone. Every other phone has to have Froyo cleaned up for it.
Give Samsung a little bit of a chance. You know you'll regret it if you give up and the Epic gets 2.2 and blows everything else away.

Phone's only been out since August 31st
2. Custom Roms – Many already developed on Evo
My Epic feels snappier than an Evo on the best Cyanogen crack. This doesn't bother me one bit. Plus once again phone's only been out since August 31. ROMS are on the way
3. HTC- I feel they push updates much faster, and work harder to polish there UI.
I actually like TouchWiz and sideways scrolling, plus an update just came out for Epic
Your 2.2 will be here when it gets here. "They have announced 2.2 on there tablet", and so what????? Did they ever say the Epic is NOT getting 2.2
5. CASES, putting a case on the Epic makes it look huge like a brick, and not very form fitting.
...and so is putting lipstick on a pig. The Epic has a slide out keyboard, which naturally adds to its girth. If you can't stand it like that in a case then go commando.
What’s your guys opinions? I mean I like the phone, im just so scared of it being left behind of the dust because Samsung wont fulfill there development promises, While HTC has a pretty good track record for moving updates fast.

You buy a phone for the potential it has right now (and the Epic wins over the Evo performance wise, even on stock in a lot of areas), not what it may do nor not do eons from now. And besides 2.2 is set for the Epic. If you don't have the patience to wait for it then please take back the Epic and let someone else not be deprived of one in stock.

I agree the community makes HTC phones great, and i think HTC gets that (or at least the point that they have a huge cult following of devs).

I love the epic its the best phone i have ever had, but its a samsung. I hate the name samsung. HTC phones feel, look, and sound much more classier.
Keep the epic.

Not for me. That and the ****ty radio are my two biggest gripes about the epic.
The evo has a lot of gripes. I had one since release.
1. Even with evo switch the fps is still inconsitant and the device feels laggy at times and thqts with 2.2. The epic on 2.1 is is already faster.
2. ****ty video and sub par camera software
3. Screen isn't as nice
The evo wins hands down on
1. Radio at least at this point is superior
2. Solid build as its not a slider

I was hoping it would. However, take a picture, and upload it to anywhere (picasa, facebook, etc) it hasn't fixed it for me at all.
In all fairness, the Epic just came out on the 31 of August. I have both and love them both(the Evo is not activated at this time, strictly Wifi), but the Evo didn't get 2.2 until over 2 months sfter release...patience
I actually sold my evo and got the epic and I haven't looked back. Both phones are nice but just like some people recognizes the Epic's problems, one must also remember that when the Evo launched, it too had its share of problems...battery drainage being one them, screen seperation, screen tearing etc. The Evo also launched with 2.1.
It seems as though everybody want froyo and they want it now. I think you should just keep the epic and just wait it out for froyo. Because I have a feeling that once froyo hits our epics, everyone that left to run to the evo or some other phone will be having some big second thoughts.

One thing that I'm getting annoyed at is how it seems that it's ACCEPTABLE to release a phone with these issues.
All good points guys. I'm going to wait it out. This phonw is snapper than the nexus, and that will be the ame as epic. So it will pay off for me to hold on and wat for the development community to do what samsung probably will not. At least its not a moto phone right? We wouldn't be getting any updates tell we rioted on there building...

Nothing is perfect. If it were then everyone would buy the one perfect phone and there would be no competition. What do you want people to do, march on Sprint and Samsung and say. Samsung tear down this wall of ****ty product development. Or maybe have some common sense and look at the big picture. It is a cell phone, mind you a very expensive one, but a cell phone nonetheless. Look at the EVO, the screen is Capped at 30 FPS and it is just horrid, I understand you are pissed about all the cell phones and such, mostly the quality control. How did Apple miss the antenna miss-hap on the iPhone 4? Epic 4G's upload speeds are shoddy, at least this can be fixxed with a software update (hopefully!), and also the EVO's screen cap, they say they are looking into it. It seems you are out to get the world and just genuinly pissed at everyone and everything, so there will be no convincing you otherwise. But man, it can't be healthy to be so upset about something fairly arbitrary in life. And I understand your view on the GPS and Upload Speeds. They are unacceptable, and I will be making a phone call to Sprint AND Samsung because I to believe that we should be getting more for our buck, but I also believe these can fixxed and addressed accordingly. I have had an HTC Hero, I love that phone, but I also got it a year after its release so I didnt have any problems with it, I like HTC a lot and was going to buy an EVO but got sick of waiting. I think the wait times for those phones are just insane, then I saw the epic and I really like Samsung products so I picked up my Epic and love it. Because of the physical keyboard there is some give and it feels more cheap but I realize this is due to the fact that it needs to give (the keyboard cant be to tight is what I mean). Some say this is not acceptable, I realize it is needed. My point is that phones arent perfect, and I get irritated but not so upset as to swear and just be genuinly pissed.
All I have to say is stick in there and just have fun!

[Q] So I have to decide by Monday

Knowing what you know now about the Epic....
My upgrade time is Monday and I need to replace my old Touch Pro (can you imagine I am still using it). I would like the Epic becuase of the keyboard, and the hardware does look more impressive. However the EVO fanboys are a bit much and you cannot get a good review of Epic from them.
So I am asking you all what do you think... Should I take the Epic and be happy? I have to extend my contract 2 years and I want to be happy with my decision. The angst here over GPS and Froyo has me thinking it might be safer to go to Evo w/o the keyboard... even though I can't stand the attitutudes of the Evo users.
Let me know what you think. Any comments I would appreciate.
For a good unbiased review see engadget. They did a thorough workup of the epic. Also I reccomend using the search function, there are multiple threads just like this and should answer ur questions.

I've read COUNTLESS posts. I am just looking for something a bit updated. It seems things change as the wind blows.
Well the ppl on the froyo leak say gps is fixed so if that and froyo are ur only 2 probs with epic, they will be solved soon with the ota (the leak is kinda buggy) which hopefully will come in the next few weeks.

I like them both. The keyboard sold the epic to me, along with the display.
I love my Epic. I play a lot of games too, so the choice was obvious to me.
Sent from my bathroom, with toilet paper.
I'm upgrading on thursday. I finally decided upon the epic because of the hardware keyboard, the awesome screen and the fact that I don't like sense. I went into the sprint store to get a feel for them. That definitely helped me. There have been a few moments here and there where I think "man, maybe I should get the evo." Especially after seeing how large the user community is. But I always come back to the epic. P.s. If you're the primary line then you should be eligible for yearly upgrades with the everything data plan. So you're only stuck with this phone for a year. Or give it thirty days ad switch to the evo if you're not satisfied.
I just got my epic and love it.
The only other phone I think I would consider is the G2 by T-mobile.
I wish we had froyo already but it should be out in a few weeks.
The epic's display is awesome.

Same here. I originally wanted Evo (didn't we all)... then I investigated Epic and found out its a whole lot more than just a keyboard for $50. The added hardware (processor, display, gpu, etc, etc, etc) make me think its plumb silly to buy an Evo... but man those Evo owners are very loud. No one is saying their phone is bad... obviously its great, but boy do they like to cut down the Epic.
In regards to primary line stuff... its currently set to my wife's line. She is on blackberry, but I will probably upgrade her to an Epic later this year so that we are on the same phone (unless a dual core 3.0 phone comes out... then I get it and she gets the Epic ).
I just jumped from an Evo to the Epic and this is my honest advice. If you are here for roms go with the Evo by far. The support for the Evo on this site and the lack there of for the Epic is like night and day.
If you don't plan on Rooting your phone and wanting everything stock go with the Epic. I don't see how anyone can argue differently.

Thanks. Good advice. I like that there is a support community for Evo... but I would only root/flash if I really had to. I am not a power user... couldn't care less about overclocking (at least for now - a year from now who knows).. that being said my Touch Pro is currently unlocked/flashed to MightyROM, so it's not out of the question. I certainly will not be planning to root/flash anytime before official Froyo is released on Epic.
Epic obviously doesn't have same dev community as evo, but we do have a good growing dev community. We have 4 or 5 solid roms out right now and even if that number doesn't grow I'm happy, its about quality not quantity.

skywalkr2, I worked at Sprint for over 8 years (great place to work, left for an amazing opportunity elsewhere) and as a Pre owner, I was RABIDLY anticipating a new device this year to replace my Pre (greatest software on the market, worst hardware). I'm at work now and took a short break to look at my phone and happened to see this thread in the XDA app. As such, I don't have time at this moment to give my full opinion, but I can tell you that NOBODY did more research on this exact question than I did... and I ended up choosing the EVO AFTER I talked my own father into getting an Epic. I'll post the full list of reasons tonight, I just wanted to get in my two cents since obviously everyone in this forum is likely to tell you the Epic is the best. I was afraid you might see an overwhelming number of people telling you to grab an Epic and then you'd stop checking this thread.
I suggest you at least listen to my reasoning before jumping ship.

Not so fast. The reports I have seen about the GPS are mixed. For example, see this.
It does sound like one of the GPS bugs -- the bogus estimated accuracy of 30.0 meters that we see now on the Epic-- is fixed in the beta release. But to test the most serious bug -- the failure to achieve satellite lock over time because of a time-sensitive cache problem -- it will take more time and effort than these early anecdotal reports can boast. So far I have not seen any Froyo-release beta tester who seems to know how to test the GPS rigorously, and I am not risking my own phone to flash this leaked ROM.
So the overall status of the GPS is unknown, as far as I'm concerned.

Great. I will definetely listen. It's exactly why I posted over here.
Dear OP,
If I were in your shoe, I'd wait at least till Epic gets Froyo update. Then you can make apples to apples comparison between Epic and EVO (assuming Evo doesn't get 2.3 update).
Or better yet, if you are a bit more patient, wait till january, when HTC Knight (Speedy?) becomes available. If Knights come with 2.2, it's more likely to get updated to 2.3 than current EVO or EPIC. The general consensus here is that neither EVO or Epic will officially get updated to Gingerbread. If you don't want to be stock with TP till January, get a refurb HTC Hero from ebay for about $100.

I might have some perspective on this question. I had a Touch Pro 2 prior to my Epic. I thought the TP2 was a great phone. Now I don't know how I ever managed with it. So point one is, EITHER the Epic or the Evo will seem like a HUGE step up.
One of the other phones on our plan is an Evo, so I've had a fair chance to experience that phone and my Epic.
I would give both very high marks, and I think that the recent rating (can't remember from what publication) that gave them number one and number two of all phones was correct.
I waited for the Epic because I was used to the keyboard on the TP2, and thought it was very necessary. However, Once I got the Epic, with Swype, I find I almost never use the keyboard. It's still handy once in a while, but now I could live without it, as long as I have Swype.
For a short while we were successful in getting Swype to work on the Evo. When it did, the Evo really would have worked for me as well as the Epic. Alas, it has not proven possible to get the program to work reliably on there.
So oddly, the phone with the keyboard doesn't really need it because it has Swype, and the phone without a keyboard doesn't have Swype, and can't seem to have it.
That comes down to the sole "real" issue for me. Both have been nearly trouble free, and Android just annihilates Windows Mobile.
Radio Shack now has the Epic for $220.00, and the Evo for $150.00. When I bought the difference was $50.00, and then they lowered it within the first 30 days, so my total difference was only $20.00. For $20.00 more, I'd say take the Epic for sure. For $70.00 more, I'd say the scale tips in favor of the Evo.
Again, they're both just great phones. I don't think you can go "wrong" with either.
Harris
So, I have had both phones Epic & Evo. Here is my opinion about both.
Evo had a bigger screen and kickstand that I love and miss till this day. I loved the build qualitiy of the Evo, it just felt so much more durable. The evo is truly a great phone and i miss the heck outta it!
The Epic.... I love it! I love the keyboard, I tried so hard to get use to the on-screen keyboard on the EVO (even tried swype on it) and couldn't use it.. As I am a heavy texter (about 3000+ a month) the keyboard is a must for me. The screen on the Epic is well..... just EPIC! Its amazing! but then again the Evo had the bigger screen....
Both are awesome phones! If I could have both I would use the EVO to watch movies (kickstand) and to customize a lot. But I would def use the Epic as my daily phone. I strongly believe once we receive froyo there will be bigger & better things stored for us.
If you think you can live without a keyboard go for the EVO, but since your use to keyboards like the tp had then I would get the Epic.. (That is if you used it a lot?)
Like I stated both phones are great but I'd have to say Epic with the screen, keyboard & I personally think the camera quality is better on both the front and back. Defiantly the video quality is better on the Epic. 720p on the EVO looked like crap and didn't even look like 720p, the Epic is much crisp & clear IMO.
However I did miss HTC Sense (i loved the animations & clock) but with a couple apps from the market, you can make your phone feel like your using an HTC phone! Good luck on whatever you may choose, I'm sure you will be satisfied with either phone!

My upgrade is due today...

I am stuck between the EVO and the Shift.
My wife has the EPIC, which has a really nice GPU, but I refuse to personally own a Samsung phone..
How is the GPU in the EVO Shift?
Is the smaller screen really a draw back?
I came from an Evo to the Shift. Don't want to go back.

It is really a matter of opinion. I had an Epic and I will tell you that there is no other smartphone line on the market that can match the graphics performance of the Hummingbird processor. They won't even come close.
That said, the GPU on the shift is not bad, its just not as good as the one in the SGS line. Personally, I don't play a lot of games on my phone and if I do they are not GPU intensive ones. My wife (she owns the shift and I now have an Evo) plays the sims on her phone and I've never seen it even stutter. I've watched full 1080p avi videos on both phones and never had an issue.
As to the screen, no one can say for you if its an issue. For me, it is. 3.6 is just too small but to my wife its more than enough. My suggestion would be to the sprint store and play with each. If you want the big screen the Evo is great and it has a great development community. If you want the keyboard, even though there doesn't seem to be a lot going on around here there are a lot of great devs would have already switched and are just waiting for permanent root to start releasing some very cool stuff.
For me, I wouldn't get or use my evo without the sprint extended battery for it. That fixes a major evo issue, battery life. It depends on what's most important features on a smartphone. I won't go through all the questions but figure out what you're wanting to do most often and go with the phone which that is it's strongpoints.
None of them do everything well.
I'm personally waiting for root on the Shift before I decide to buy it. Of course by then Sprint may announce something better. We'll see. My Hero is fine for now.

I agree, that's intriguing. Permanent root will happen, the Shift out of the box will blow your Hero away if you're worried about the bloatware.
I have the phone and I'm waiting for Perma root. In fact, if it's not achieved before my 30 days mark, I might take it back and buy it again once its done.
Use and abuse the 30 days I say. This also might free me up for whatever is being revealed on the 7th, which is one day after my 30 day mark.

Like you, I'm currently using an HTC Hero (fully rooted, ROM'd, & themed). I'm due for my upgrade next month, but am having difficulty deciding between the Epic & Evo Shift. They both seem to have their strong points, but I'm just torn. I'm thinking I'll "test drive" the Epic (sAMOLED screen really looks nice), and if I don't like it I'll use the 30-day return policy & give the Evo Shift a try.
The biggest complaint I've been reading about the Epic is lack of support. I've figured out that this basically means people are upset that it doesn't have an official Samsung FroYo release yet. Understandable. HTC seems to have gotten better with their updates (my wife has an OG Evo), but I remember a time when we Hero users were very, very upset with HTC/Sprint because we didn't have Eclair for the longest time. Remember that?
Bottom line (for me) is that no phone manufacturer is perfect!

i had a hero too and i was one of those very upset people who waited forever for the 2.1 update....once it got leaked and i tried it i was so disappointed i finally rooted and never looked back...but i feel like sprint and htc took a lot of crap for that and look what happened with the evo....first carrier phone to get 2.2....so i think they may have learned their lesson so im hopeful updates will be quick for the shift

I completely agree! The Eclair update for the Hero was a definite disappointment. I was very apprehensive about rooting (fear of bricking my phone). Once I did it & realized how easy it actually was I kicked my self for not doing it sooner - no more dialer lag!
I hope you're right about HTC and their updates going forward. Maybe the Hero fiasco taught them a valuable lesson - the Evo 2.2 update and subsequent patch (Swype & other software) seems to show they've learned something. If the delay goes on much longer for the Epic users, Samsung may find a lot of people either jumping ship early or just refusing to buy their products in the future.
I know I'll most likely root whatever device I end up with, but I think Samsung's delay with FroYo is my biggest hangup because I don't want to go through it again!

Honestly, if you are considering the Epic, don't. Its not worth the money. I bought it at launch and it was the biggest technological mistake I've ever made. I should have gone with my gut and gotten an Evo from the start. If the Epic gets froyo it will be the last update it gets, it will never see gingerbread or anything beyond. They've left the GPS barely functioning for this long and I doubt if they'll ever really care enough to fix it. The upside is you never really have to worry about bricking it because its already a brick.
I have a MacBook and love it. I thought I would like an iPhone but I read stories about the cons of the phone. I feel as if apple heavily censors some apps and deny some really useful apps because maybe they think someone could do something remotely black or grey hattish with it.
A Swiss army knife or leatherman multi tool can be very useful and handy sometimes. You could also use it to cut someone's brake lines or slit their throat. They decide that we aren't responsible enough to have something like that at our disposal. Once again, I digress.

I appreciate the input... any input I get to help me decide. I still have a couple weeks to hash it out, so I'm researching & taking all opinions into account. Speaking of opinions... my ex-wife had a Moment which she cursed constantly... what did she "upgrade" to? You probably guessed it... the Epic.
I also plan to spend some more "hands on" time at the Sprint store with both phones.

I do apologize for my harsh opinion. I felt very burned by Sprint and Samsung based on the fact that the sales rep sold me on the epic based on a claim that there would be 4g in my area within 2 months and that the Epic would have 2.2 in less than a month. However, when I came back to have them check out my wife's instinct the same guy told me that the Epic wouldn't be getting FroYo and as you are aware there is no official Froyo for it nor is there 4G in my area. I bought my wife a Shift because I knew she couldn't handle dealing with the Instinct any longer but I bought it off contract so that when hers is up we can leave Sprint and just pay my ETF. If I could get out of Sprint with just paying one ETF I would do it now.

[Q] mytouch vs Samsung

So, how is the mytouch 4g gonna stack up against the new 4G Samsung with a front facing camera that was announced today?? Will the Samsung be better and is it really "REAL" 4G so non-T-Mo people can shut up.
Id say the mytouch doesn't rlly stack up to the OG vibrant, let alone one with 4g and a ffc...

I was talking about the mytouch 4g.
What are you both delusional? specially Flonkas as MT4G beat that wannabe android device in every aspect. In this very forum under few threads down you may want to look at it. lol @ op for thinking Vibrant 4G and Vibrant is diff device.

I don't see why you feel the need to "lol" at me just for asking a question. Unless I didn't understand and you were just being funny. All I've read on the blogs all day today since it was announced is that it will be a better phone. I'm asking why and if that's true. That's all. Don't be such a snob. I found your reply flame-y and a little unnecessary. Again, IF you were trying to make fun of me.

Wasn't trying to offend you but was just stating facts as we covered it long ago here. Now in what ways will Vibrant 4G be better?

I'm with STHNS. After buying a Captivate for my gf and doing research on it I am flabberghasted at how many issues plague that phone. The rooting procedure is a nightmare, the GPS is a joke, Samsung's bloatware is incredible and almost a year later they still haven't updated it to Froyo.
I am VERY glad I didn't get a Vibrant. Stay away is my advice.
Cool, guys thanks. I only heard about this phone on Monday when the rumors hit, so I had no idea people were already talking about it.

My guess is there won't be a new T-Mo phone that could seriously challenge the MT4G until March (sorry Nexus S users)

I am a former Vibrant owner. The MT4G is leaps and bounds beyond the Vibrant. In the 3 months that I've owned the Vibrant, the majority of my time was spent trying to apply various fixes to try to make the phone work as it should. With the MT4G, the only modification I've made was applying the Gingerbread launcher. As such, I have no reason to believe that the repackaged Vibrant (make no mistake, it's the same phone with a couple of extra bells and whistles thrown in) will be any better. I suggest avoiding Samsung phones altogether, at least in the near future. That company really needs to get its act together.

Agreed. We've got the best processor, the most RAM, and because it's an HTC we've got tons of ROMs and developer support. There's been an ongoing project to port the Nexus S ROM over to SGS for months now and it's still unstable. We've got CM7 as a daily driver already.

I would agree with this. I had much respect for Samsung but after buying my gf a Captivate and doing more research I'm on it I'm very displeased with them.
LOL kgbkny I remember when I had HD2 and Vibrant first came out people came up to me and was like this is better than yours I was like idiot you don't even have lagfix installed and I can beat it down without scaling my CPU at 768mhz. He had no idea so I installed various packages and fixes and he agreed it ran better after and was thankful. But ya Samsung you should avoid it period go with superior mobile vendor like HTC how many phone that is flagship of many carrier is not HTC? Lets be real now HTC is the way to go.

That's true.
MT4G
EVO4G
DROID INCREDIBLE
Basically everyone but AT&T has an HTC as their flagship phone.

lol they have reason for that as AT&T's flagship is iPanzy 4 which is another thread of its own but ya AT&T is just crippling Android device in its lineup. I been telling ya all not to trust THE death star as VZ is the only carrier left from the OG Bell 6/7 split.

I laughed at this one and I'm a vibrant owner. I got my wife a mt4g for xmas and there is no comparison. Stock out of the box the mt4g is leaps and bounds better than the vibrant. As far as speed and response, the stock mt4g was at a minimum as fast as my rooted/modded/voodoo lagfixed vibrant.
I've installed just about every rom that's come out for the vibrant from eugene, master, and team whiskey as well as every leaked modem that's come out and the mt4g consistently gets better signal than my vibrant as well. I'll be sitting in my house and the vibrant goes back and forth between edge and 3g and I've never seen the mytouch on edge once. Then you have to factor in the gps problem of the samsungs and the fact that samsung has a terrible history of supporting their devices. They'll straight up leave you hanging. They came out with the galaxy s line, then in no time flat they come out with the nexus s, and now they've come out with the vibrant 4g. All that is great if they support their devices when they move on to new ones but they have a history of not doing that. In the meantime I can put gingerbread on my old ass HTC G1.
The one thing the Samsung has going for it is the screen. That screen is hot **** but it's not so great that it makes up for all the other areas that it's deficient in IMO.
Plus the mt4g has sensui. Not everyone likes sense. I do, but more importantly I can run the senseui but if I want something different I can root the phone and install a more vanilla android experience. With the vibrant there isn't any stable sense roms running on it. So you have more variety with the mt4g as well. Plus the extra RAM doesn't hurt either or the FFC. I like the physical buttons and the trackpad as well. YMMV.

Actually the original galaxy s the international version had the FFC, may be tmo is just playing this apple game of streaming the upgrades for its customers.
The MT4 will still be the better phone if samsung chose to use the same wimpy cpu already found in their vibrant.

AT&T is getting the Desire HD very soon. Of all the current phones, it's the only one that I would give up the MT4G for.
Did you check the communication spec for DHD? It uses 900/2100mhz for 3G you won't get 3G in USA but you can use 2G for d/v. Far as MT4G vs DHD goes I was like you also but as they do share similar spec but if you look at benchmark you will see MT4G is superior than DHD but DHD does have 4.3" display lol which I miss so dearly, but also would have picked DHD if had 3G support.
