Elonex eTouch - Galaxy Tab General

Hi All,
after seeing the price point on the Galaxy tab I've gone and got myself a Elonex eTouch (10"). It arrived this morning and looks pretty good!
At the ~ £160 price point with a recognisable brand I suspect this will sell well in the UK.
Matt
PS. It seems have purchased a sample as they haven't launched yet. If anyone is interested in a review I'd be happy to put some initial views down.
MOD: any chance of an Elonex forum?

I couldnt even find hard specs of the device, but what I did find, I did not like. 256 ram, a chipset ive never heard of, a RESISTIVE touchscreen, only 2 gig on board, a regular LCD screen and only 3 hours of battery.
If it works for you then cool, but I wouldnt really call it a competitor to the tab.

(Sorry I can't post a link - I only just registered and forum rules don't allow...)

Sorry for hi-jacking thread, but I just HAD to compliment LostAlone for her/his sig... I feel exactly the same
So, don't shoot me, I'm probably in the other bush

I'm not a bitter man, nor am I prone to violence.
But when someone rolls in to the "Samsung Galaxy Tab" forum, and says he just purchased an Elonex eTouch, I find myself wanting to perform 2 things immediately;
1 - Ask the original poster if he needs a new prescription for his glasses.
2 - Put a few nails through a board and pound the original poster, regardless of his answer.
Consider the following information to be the metaphorical representation of the previously mentioned nail-board;
The technical specs of the LNX Code 11 (the CPU of this tablet) are secret. Why would they keep it secret? Perhaps because it is not exactly... awe-inspiring.
Moving on, your new 10" piece of glory comes with 256MB RAM - the Samsung Galaxy S has around 400MB, and it runs like a glacier unless you're killing off tasks/apps constantly. Food for thought.
It has 2GB of internal storage - I imagine that Android will occupy a good chunk of this storage, leaving you with just enough space for a handful of mp3's and last night's episode of The Office in low quality DivX.
The thing is a 10" monster, with what appears to be a rather fat profile, and somehow, only puts out 3 hours of battery life. Consider that 3 hours of battery life is the OPTIMAL and most optimistic life-span they could mention: under normal usage, I'd reckon your tablet will be begging for the AC adapter in 2 hours.
The screen is resistive. Know what that means? It means no multi-touch. I need not say any more about that. Well, besides the fact that a slightly sharp nail will ruin it with a little undue pressure.
Finally, the thing is 16mm thick, while the Tab is a mere 12mm at its thickest (iPad is 13mm). This may seem trivial, but 4mm of fatness across a 10.1" tablet adds up to a lot of space.
So that's the end of your beating.
Sure, 160 GBP is a great deal less than the 600 GBP or whatever a Tab costs in the UK. But you're better off with nothing rather than that paperweight.
And I doubt that Elonex will earn its own forum around here. These are hallowed halls, my friend!
Welcome to the Tab forum.

Whoa there laddie! In a case as muddled as this one I thought it best to say nothing at all!

eek! Well i bought the missus the 10" from Toys R Us and for £150 it is a steal for browsing in bed watching YouTube etc Elonex are very helpful and a 2.2 is out in 2 weeks - WiFi/GPS is fine and corporates can use VPN and Exchange. Accelerometer is a bit iffy but works - case is sturdy enough and screen OK with reasonable viewing angles and resolution. No bluetooth and won't run Flash (which I am trying to patch) anyone who has loaded Flash OK please contact - also a patch is available on the Elonex site although my came already with the patch installed which corrects some minor video issues:
All in all 150 quid well spent.

I massively agree with jeebs.
This is a Galaxy Tab forum. Yeah, you posted in general, but this still has nothing to do with the Tab.
£150 sounds like a big rip off considering that the specs make it sound worse than my Nokia 3310. Yeah, its a cheap 10" Android tablet, but there's a reason its that cheap..

First sorry for my english
I have a question, can make anyone of developers here a root Tool for the ELONEX etouch 700et,pls,pls,pls
I have tested the UniversalAndroot and the z4root,the last makes only a busybox dont root???? pls help,im not alone who looks for a root for this device...
thx to all

I would gladly buy an Archos 70 over that Elonex, let alone get it over a Tab.
You get what you pay for most of the time. However, it's the year 2011. Had that been released, well, I don't know like 5 years ago? Then it's something worth considering.

x2 Launch delayed until APRIL!!!!!!

Hello everyone,
this is not a joke. Based on statements made by Sony Ericsson Employees to questions as to when the x2 will be launched, this is what the SE Staff in Germany had to say (translation below):
Bitte haben Sie einen Moment Geduld, Ihr Kundenberater ist gleich für Sie da...
(Transl.: Please be patient, your customer care rep will be available for you soon)
Sie wurden mit **** verbunden.
(Transl.: You have been connected with ****)
****: Hallo und danke, dass Sie den Sony Ericsson Chat Support nutzen. Mein Name ist ****. Einen Moment bitte, ich lese eben Ihre Frage.
(Transl.: Hello and thankyou for using the Sony Ericsson Chat Support. My name is ****. One moment please, I am reading your question)
*** Note my question was: When exactly will the x2 be released this Month (January)?
(Transl.: Due to the possibility of further optimization, we have decided not to launch the x2 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands. The launch date has been tentatively set in April. Therefore, Customer Care Support will only be available for this product at that time).
I am at a loss for words.......................................................................................
Admin edit: I removed the name from the SE Rep. after such a request from SE.
First of all, this sucks. They didn't release it for Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands yet? Wow.
I also haven't seen the X2 in any german shops yet. I thought they would release it this month? I can't believe that this is happening. As far as i know, the X2 is almost released in many other countries. They should release it here, too and make any optimizations to the ROM afterwards. I'd suggest instead of everybody who wanted to buy a X2, to grab a HTC HD2. Maybe we could teach Sony Ericsson a lesson then.
Anyway, this is why i did buy myself a HTC HD2 and i didn't regret it.
its a shame
first of all i live in germany and the se x2 is way too late(untill its released i would get a real device) ,
what i mean it a joke that this device still gotta be release with the msm7200A shipset ,i mean the weak low end devices run 72257 shipset (its bit better then the 7200A old shipset) and the X2 will cost more then a device with snapdragon... doesnt make sence !!!.
i dont see any sense with SE releasing the X2 without Rework of the headset(or the device with fail badly)
SE please Look at LG Expo,Toshiba TK1 and so on ...and learn
its sad to say that i am happy X1 user that gonna upgrade to a snapdragon device with WM,and it look bad for SE cause they didnt make it .
update:
it look like SE will Release X2 in germany with Wm 6.5.3 out of box, that why they are delaying the crap phone.

im pretty sure theyre not delaying it on purpose. to piss people off! lol. theyre not releasing it because its not ready. whats better, to release a phone that doesnt work properly and then have lots of recalls, bad press and unhappy customers or wait until the phone is ready? ive imported an x2 and while i do like it i will be one of the first to say that its not a finished product. im happy to use it as it is because i have access to sites like xda developers and i can tweak any problems i encounter. but a regular person who just buys a phone and expects it to work will be dissappointed. if youre genuinely interested in one then theres plenty on ebay and online. its very easy to get one.
It seems the shall be releasing it with WM 6.5.3 as said above. Which in a way is good, isn't it?
Sux dude, we in Norway have allready got it
you can get the x2 more or less all over the world except the ones with qwertz. so for me it seems that they have problems with qwertz-hardware.
i mean, the problem cannot be the firmware...this one you can update.
Guys, you want the phone now? I found it on ebay, but it is way to expensive, snap dragon phones are cheaper...the phone will be a flop with this price.
Here you go: http://cgi.ebay.de/BRAND-NEW-SONY-E...ZViewItemQQptZCell_Phones?hash=item45f086797e
One question. Since the phone has the same hardware as x1 (or nearly), will it be possbile to flash x1 roms on x2?

@flop: /signed. dunno what they're thinking.
@x1-roms: i don't think so, because it's just nearly the same hardware (keyb, cam, display) and it's not made by htc, so there are some differences in driver-architecture etc.
this is really sad. against all negativity here i was about to get one because i wanted to develop flash-panels for it.
native flash and also the support for project capuchin was one of the few advantages of the x2 (in my opinion).
now there is really absolutely no point for me to get an x2. i guess i will switch my developer efforts either to android or maybe even to the iphone (after flash cs5 is released).
the last chance for SE to sell me a phone ever again would be the x10. but after the delays on nearly every smartphone model they will probably screw-up on this one too.

Have you gotten directly from Sony, or from independent retailers?
it's a shame !
Customers , you can forget Xperia X2 , it's a stillborn product !
well apart from software I never really saw x2 as an upgrade
trust me...its an upgrade! ignoring the upgraded software the quality of the build is way better than the X1. i really liked the X1 and wanted it to succeed badly but the shoddy workmanship always dissapointed me - the keypad that lasted a couple months before becoming unusable, the cracks appearing, the paint peeling off the cover, the battery that doubled as a hand warmer... even the screen felt a bit lose once i slid it open.
the x2 is very solid, the curved edges make it feel thinner and more comfortable to hold. the screen slides out nice and tight, no wobbles. the keyboard also feels more solid and has a nice reassuring slight click when a key is pressed. i cant vouch for long term reliability but im confident it should last. so far no temperature increase from the battery (although it still drains just as fast)
the x2 is the phone sony should of released 18months ago.. but just like the X1 when it first came out the X2 needs another firmware release to fix some annoying bugs. when it works it works really well -fast too... but when a bug rears its ugly head its a right pain in the ass! lol. if delaying the official release until april means that it gets fixed then it will be worth the wait.
I get it probably next month.....

that's what they said when the delayed the x1, but it didn't work properly either (cracks in case, sluggish, ...)
My instinct is that there will be some monstrous phones coming out in the next 3-4 months from HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and LG (okay, and apple). The smartphone business is undergoing an accelerated transformation from a fairly niche market to a gigantic industry, and the above companies are competing to be top dog. They all want to have the headliner phones and geeks like me will be rewarded. I just can't reward SE for their sloppy implementations. Their strategy was to have the top phones on all the platforms: WM, S60, and Android. But they obviously diluted their focus. The X1, X2, and Satio have fallen short of expectations. We'll see about the X10.

yeh true, i think they gave up in the end and just released the X1. would of been too costly to completely redesign the keyboards and cases. kind of what theyve done with the X2 in some territorys, its definately better made but just as buggy as the X1 was when it was first released. sometimes i think sony aim too high with their stuff. they have fancy ideas but can never seem to get everything to work as intended. the p800, p900, p990 where exactly the same. i remember the p990 was delayed at least a year. and was still buggy as fck when it first came out. then took 6months to get it to a reasonable standard. still wasnt 100% even after 3 firmware upgrades. the p1i was good though. they learned from their previous mistakes and finally released the phone they intended. one of the best phones ive had. most likely it will be the 4th or 5th xperia phone before they get it right. X10 looks promising but its their first android phone. no doubt theyll **** that one up too somehow.lol .

I also disagree regarding P910 - it was one of their best products ever.

Aftermarket Tablets

I am looking for an aftermarket android tablet thread. I got a apad Android 2.2 7" tablet from Asia on the way. I got it for dirt cheap ($180 shipped) and thought I would give it a shot and see how it is instead of forking out $400 plus a 2 year contract and monthly fee from Tmobile.
Anyway, what I am looking for is a rooting application for it, and curious to know if these galaxy ROMs will run on it.
Thanks for any replies.

In the case of Android tablets, you very much get what you pay for! The only "cheap" Android tablets that I know of that are any good are the Archos 70, Archos 101, and the Advent Vega and these will all set you back a lot more than you paid for yours.
Ultimately, I suspect you'll find that what you've bought is poorly made and supported, with low performance and battery life. I've been there myself with an iRobot, though that was a long time ago now and I'm sure these cheap pads are slightly better now.

Pretty much zero chance of getting a Galaxy Tab ROM running on one of these tablets. Your best bet is to head to somewhere like SlateDroid for more info and ROMs.
Regards,
Dave
I bought one of those tablets - and it was HORRIBLE. The screen was plastic and flexed a lot when you tried to press on anything. And good luck clicking something the first time. It was very poorly made, virtually unusable, battery would get hot real fast, horrible battery life, the list goes on and on... Fortunately I was able to return it and get my money back (minus the return shipping). Let me know how yours is...
And how is this relevant in the dev forum?

If you read my post, I am looking to find out if there is a rooting application or ROMs that have been DEVELOPED for aftermarket android tablets.
Z4root, one click lag fix with built in z4root, superoneclick root.. Some like s7 tablet but resistive screen and some like the archos 70 and 101 but only has 256mb ram and the screens on any of these tabs are crap compared to galaxy tab. DO yourself a favor and just get the galaxy tab.
If you can't find any of the listed apps. I have them all and can send it to you.

[Q] Would you buy an A7 now at current prices?

The eLocity A7 is a 2.2 tablet, so it is being eclipsed by the new 3.0 tablets. But the current A7 prices ($180 used, $240 new on eBay) are much lower than the 3.0 tablets. So I've been contemplating picking one up for noodling around while I am riding around on mass transit. Basically playing Angry Birds, Plants versus Zombies, listening to MP3's, reading Kindle books, and watching videos. As an unlocked device it might also be fun to try other ROM's too. So I am curious about current user's perceptions.
Would you buy your A7 again at current prices?
How usable is it out of the box versus needing to install Dexter's ROM's?
As I understand it, the A7 isn't true multi-touch, but does support pinch to zoom. How limiting have you found this?
Dexter appears to be hard at work on A7comb, but there are bugs. Have user's found this a viable way to use Honeycomb on the A7?
I just bought one the other week for 240 off of ebay and am loving it. Don't feel like there is anything in the same price range that can do what it does. I simply wanted to be able to play nes, snes, and psx roms on the go with an xbox 360 controller, as well as play HD videos and output it through HDMI. So I am happy with my purchase.
I would definitely recommend putting on dexters mod as well as the xbox patch if you have a 360 controller.
I feel though if you don't want the 360 controller support there might be better options for you in this price range that still have hdmi support.
Thanks good to hear. I had heard about the 360 controller support, but I doubt I would use that during the commute.
I would buy the A7 at current prices. I paid $300 when they first appreaed on Amazon becuse I wanted Tegra performance with plenty of RAM and Storage. I would definitely use Dexters ROM becuase it gives you the market. (Three Cheers for Dex)
I use Dolphin HD for a browser and A7 Zooming works just fine just by touching the + - screen icon.
I use the Nook Reader, do email and calendars, surf the web and listen to my favorite MP3. Except for the reader, these are activities I used to do on my little droid. These are much better on the A7.
I also use a Tega2 which is a 10.1 tablet which will run Android or Windows. Right now I am running Win7 Professional and it does everything a Netbook would do. If Windows 8 meets my expectations, I will use it on the Tega2 10.1.
I will be upgrading my phone soon. I am considering a an HTC Thunderbolt setup to take advantage of Verizon's very fast 4G. The Thunderbolt will also act as a mobile Hotspot for my A7 and make it truley mobile.
Price is what you pay; value is what you get. I am satisfied with the value of my A7.
I do have one gripe for StreamTV, makers of the A7. I don't think they understand or appreaciate the value of the Dexter's of this world. Their hardware would be so much more valueable if they cooperated with the XDA community and Dexter and help him realize the full potential of the hardware. I keep hoping StreamTV managment will wake up one day and empower the XDA community with A7's code. Doing so would only enhance the name and value of StreamTV.

StreamTV/eLocity are not the manufacturers of this device. The manufacturer is Compal, and eLocity is just a branded reseller.
Also I REALLLLLY suspect that they don't have anything to do with any coding at all, never mind releasing more than they already have... Remember back to when they were releasing kernel source. They blamed the delays on their "overseas programmers". Sure it takes a little reading between the lines, but they couldn't provide anything because the actual manufacturer hadn't supplied them with anything.
Not so much...
It has been a special experience getting these various ROMs that have been giving a much needed level of usefulness to the Elocity A7. If I knew it was going to require all this to get some basic enjoyment out of this device, it would have never been purchased with my tech dollars. Kudos to Dexter and others for making it worth more than a Frisbee but, Archos seems like it may have been a better choice or simply waiting for the dust to settle before buying anything at all.
Multi-touch, which is very standard now and was even on lower powered handsets when this Tab came out, just seems like a must have.
We know tablets work differently than phones but, having affordable large MicroSD cards but a poor access and management solution just blows, perhaps this device was rushed to shelves too soon.
Nice bright 7" inch display with non-backlit keys...this has been aggravating on numerous occasions.
Every once in a while I take a look at that docking port and mumble "one day, one day".
There has been occasions when a daydream about what could be done if the SIM card slot wasn't blocked would pop into my head then that too fades away.
Very grateful for the ear-buds that were included, they really make up for the low volume of the built-in speakers.
There are many great aspects about this tablet but, it's not without it's flawS.
I recently got another tablet, Acer Iconia A500 which i started supporting..
and i can say, that i suspect knowing where the latest COMPAL "picasso" went
Iconia A500 is another COMPAL product, but fully 3.1 compatible and probably 2nd/3rd gen. of compal products..
so if you find a compal picasso dupe, it is probably compatible with acer's latest product. but the devices are now locked (but they can be semi-opened), so its not easy to modify, but it is possible.
anyways, i think thats why the new products are delayed probably where compal put its focus now.. making 3.x tablets..
and to keep topic,
is the IconiaA500 in US, not compable pricewise to $300 ?
Honeycomb on A7, folio100,Vega etc.. are all using semi-GL drivers, which does not work 100% which makes it not perfect, but A7 works prety ok (i havent installed the original mod since my honeycomb install).. but since its not getting drivers made and any new kernel compiled, a real update is far from being made..
Dexter, the Iconia A500 is $450 in the US. If I was going to spend that amount I would likely opt for the Asus at 400 as I think there build quality is usually pretty good.
If I understand the driver issue. StreamTV released the kernel source, but the drivers remained closed source? So the 2.2 binary drivers aren't fully compatible with Honeycomb?
Even with it's super sensative screen and horrible built in speakers I would still go out and buy another one if I had to. It's HDMI out, super fast processor and great price are a good deal IMO.

In Denmark Acer is actually cheaper ($15), but it has the extra builtin usb device port. and it seems now that the "dolby" feature acer got, it much preferred over assus when it comes to audio.
A7,
the drivers are there, and source is ok. but its an old one, and nvidia adapted drivers differently..and im no that "hardcore" when it comes to drivers conversion where needed..
but it is all there, 2.6.32.9 kernel source is ok, i compiled and used it for some ports.
So dexter the A7 reach its potential with updates, vizio or asus will be my next choice..

Agreed 100%
For the money, it's a great device.
I find every last complaint about it unfounded... If people wanted all the features of a $700+ tablet, then they would have bought one. Don't spend less than half of that and complain because it doesn't have a couple of the same features lol

The A7 is a super sweet tablet. My eyes are not what they used to be and I really needed something with a larger screen so I bought the WiFi Xoom, and my daughter promptly stole the A7 from me. Size-wise, the A7 is really great (nice and light and a good size for many games) but hard for me to use on the road for work because it has such a small screen. Also battery life is too short, but with the Pal Energizer power pack 8000 (supports 19 v) that can be fixed (though one more thing to carry). Multi-touch is nice but my Xoom is almost too sensitive.
I think each tablet has it's own ups and downs, but I love them both.
Both are also greatly improved by being rootied and customized, so huge thanks to all the developers!
I'm sold, compared to the resistive screen tablets which are not much cheaper, the A7 sounds like a better option. I know about the short battery life, but I plan to use on the T, charge, then then use on the way home.
I'll reply when I become a user which should hopefully be soon.
A7 is a good alternative for now, at the price you can get it! 110%..
if you dont mind the small limitation of android2.2 or semi-3.0 i have given the added value of a A7. its a nice tablet, and i have used it more often than my folio100 ever was in my living room..and it kinda light weight
An aside for anyone thinking of buying a used A7. I've watched several eBay auctions (and won one last night). A 3 month old A7 with case went for $168.50, another a7 failed to meet its reserve and the auction ended at $157.50.
I won an auction for an a7 with case and 16 GB SD card for $190. I figured the SD card and case made it worth a bit more.
So all of these prices are inline with my observation that a used A7 is going for about $180 US.

Lucky.
I paid a little over $300 for my A7, plus a new 16bg mircoSD, plus a case
Well new has a warranty while used is a risk. But if I have a working A7 a week from now (that keeps working) I will feel lucky.

As long as you keep your expectations of it realistic, you'll love it.

Wanting an A500 and need some help.

Hello everybody, I am thinking about picking up one of these tablets and wondering what everybody thinks of theirs. I know that its not gonna be comparable to some other high end tabs but for the money that your saving is the Tablet itself worth it? Any reviews would be greatly appreciated!
the A500 is actually the best purchase I've made this year. It pretty much replaced my laptop as my couchside connection to the web.
Do you have the 16gb or 32?

I think the worst thing you could ever do is to go to a dedicated forum for a product you know little about and ask questions like, "...worth it?" or "... I know its[sic] not gonna be comparable to some other high end tabs" and the ever popular but never informative "I am thinking about picking up one of these <insert product here>"
You really won't get much more than biased responses. The best thing you can do is go everywhere else that isn't dedicated to the product you're looking to research *with* your needs in tow and read read read what other people have to say - their issues, the ups and downs - without jumping, waving your hands around and pointing at yourself.
newegg.com, google.com, youtube.com, bestbuy.com etc etc are a good place for you to poke around and read unaided, real-world, replies and topics on issues, questions, comparisons etc.
While this is not by any means ideal for the most part, those who own a product will love it and those who don't will say it's **** - the point is, you should be trying to mitigate that bias by reading up in places that would be less likely to have biased information. Formulate your own opinion based on your needs and what you read [time and time again - which you'll only know if you read read read in a variety of different places] then come back when you have all your specific questions or concerns to get some clarity.
I've got the 16 gb version with wifi only.
I use it for 99% of the things my laptop did and I'm a power user.
Only issue I've had was with torrents.

Yes, that would be listed in "specs" located on Acer's web site, and pretty much any site that sells the A500

tTorrent is alright but speeds suck even with full version. 750 kbps compared to 1.8 mbps for the same file over the same wifi network using my laptop. Slow.

Which "other high end tabs" do you have in mind? A500 is comparable to every single one of them and actually it comes on top considering connectivity, build quality, etc. Two days ago I bought my wife an ipad2 and she spends half the time at the tablet and the other half at her laptop. I spend 90% of my free time on the tablet and 10% on my laptop. The only thing that ipad has better is the colours of the screen. The white is pretty close to the real white while on the A500 its cooler than it should be. Other than that all I'm hearing these days is "oh, I can't see the pictures on the usb memory stick, right?", "So I need to convert the videos I have to watch them, right?" and my favorite "that stupid iTunes..."
Compared to the Android tablets currently on the market, the Iconia gives more than any of them can.

Here is the #1 thing that I like about the A500: The full size USB port! It is one of the only ones that has it. You can plug in hard drives, usb drives, game controllers etc directly into the tablet. Not many others can do that.
One thing that people give grief to the A500 on is the screen. People think that just because it isn't an IPS panel then it is no good. In my opinion the screen looks great!

My recommendation is to wait a while.
Why?
1. The tablet isn't going anywhere in the next few months and will only get cheaper.
2. The "2s" will be coming early next year - Xoom 2, Transformer 2, Iconia 2? etc. not to mention a slew of other options containing newer/faster/better CPUs at possibly a similar price point hitting the market soon.
3. ICS is out and very, very soon we'll see which tablets are updated the fastest. If you wait just a while longer, you may be able to pick something up at a similar pricepoint with ICS on there initially.
At this point, there's no rush and you'll be better off waiting a bit to see if something nicer comes along. Now granted, something nicer will always come along and it never pays to KEEP waiting. But at this point the Tegra 2 is aged and I think you need to give yourself just a bit more time since you can. Archos for example just released the G9 101 and while I don't see myself buying a tablet with less than 1GB of memory, I am certain vendors will be using alternative, newer dual core chips in their versions coming out in a while. Of course that's just me. I believe in "do unto others" and this is what I would have done if I was in the market for a tablet right now, I'd wait until at least Feb/March of 2012.
That being said, don't get me wrong...I love my A500 and I would surely have recommended it in the past few months. But right now we're on the cusp of a veritable barrage of devices running newer hardware. I wouldn't recommend buying any of the Tegra 2 tablets right now.

Buy a Galaxy Note now or wait.....and dispair

Well I have been reading about people asking the same questions for a while but my situation is a bit different.
My current device is a HD2 EU and my only 2 smartphones have been this one and the Xperia X1.
Both of them very good and I can't complaint about anything as they have served me well, well beyond what the manufacturers would like them to. This of course was only possible due to the tired-less work of all the developers here on XDA.
Well but now I have decided to sell my HD2 and I need a substitute. In 10 min the auction will end and by tomorrow I will not have a smartphone
As soon as the reviews of the Note started to show up I thought to myself that this one would be a device for me. I remember people saying that the HD2 was huge back in 2009 and today it is considered a normal sized device.
The question that concerns me is that I have am about to spend a lot of money on the Galaxy Note, right now that the Quad-Cores are coming out.
I normally buy my phones of eBay, but the price of it new with a 2 year warranty is almost the same (maybe 30 euros more expensive) than used in a very good condition.
Should I get something much worst like a the original Galaxy S of eBay and wait for the Note 2 to arrive. Or should I buy a new Note from Germany for 430 Euros?
Thank you all for your help.
I wouldn't wait for the Galaxy Note 2 because there's absolutely no rumor about it yet, so it might not get released very soon. And I would definitely not get a Galaxy S right now, because it's really outdated. Better go for a Note, S3 or even an S2.
I have a Galaxy S. I love it, but yeah it's outdated now. I am toying with the idea of a Note or waiting for a Note2 also. I am going to start doing my research now...
HD2 was a great device, when HTC was top of the game. Things have definitely changed.
I guess for your requirements (going for the best device currently) you have there options.
1. Galaxy note, the display is what makes this device, it is unbeatable.
2. HTC one x, again, I think HTC have had their day with market beating devices. I've seen a lot of reports that the new sense ui just doesn't work, ie causes fcs an awful lot. IM sure they'll update it.
3. Galaxy s 3. Personally I think it beats the HTC one x hands down.
But as a note owner, I would say that quad core just can't be utilised properly as yet, you'll see a lot of google reports saying that dual cores are actually still favoured for coping with more threads and therefore comparible performance over quad. If your looking for visuals as well as performance, the note can't be beat, I've looked at one alongside a galaxy nexus and there really isn't any comparison, you get sooo much more from the note.
That being said, nfc is pretty spectacular if it's somethings you'd use and that is the only thing I crave after.
It's without a doubt that there will be a lot of spectacular devices being released in upcoming months, probably most next gen performance handsets around September or October. It's a tough time to make a decision. All the best.

Thank you all for your quick replies. Especially SpiderTracks (+1), I will most probably just go and order mine from Germany (so that it has the ICS update and it's a bit cheaper).
Before Note came out I was considering getting a Tablet, but then it struck me. I have a desktop PC for heavy lifting, I have a Ultra portable 11,6 Notebook with 7h of battery for portability and when I am surfing in my living room, I have a Smartphone which can also surf reasonably well when needed so if I get a tablet I will have 4 devices that do +/- the same thing and I am only one .
After this reflection I went and sold my desktop PC, as I never got to use it now that I am a father and I have no time for gaming. I also sold my HD2 (the auction just finished so I already have some €€ to help me with the Note purchase).
I am drawn to the Galaxy Note not because it has a dual core CPU, but because it promises to be a hybrid between a tablet and a smatphone. If I can brows comfortably with it, read e-books and still use all the features that HD2 has like GPS, calling, texting, etc. I will be glad with it.
I am just a bit disappointed by the S-pen reviews, as I would love to use it as my minutes taker when I have complicated meetings, but if I can not write reliably and fast on it as many reviewers say, than it has not much use to me.

All this and more, took my HOX back after 3 days, combination of **** battery life and just general poor performance.
Have had my Note for 24 hours or so now and have to say im glad I paid the extra to get it.
Am slightly disappointed by the writing with the S Pen, though i'm sure that Samsung being Samsung wont let rest as it is, no doubt they will be some ROM work upcoming which will let you take advantage of this tool.
I have had a couple of strange looks in the office though while using it today, including at one point someone asking me if I had an iPad to my ear!!!

I was thinking so when I was bought my notes (I will have pocket Tablet ) ... I do not like android but there is nothing similar on the market (Apple is too expensive)
The truth is that I am disappointed with the Note. I think I was wrong because not bought a tablet (the phone is still a phone). I think I'll wait a little ... to wait WP8 ... and then I'll sell it.

German Notes dont come with ICS pre installed. SO you will have to kies Download or OTA the update - dont know if that works from india.
Also the official ICS update has LPY kernel and is therefore a risk of bricking your device.
For me, a simple factory reset from the settings menu bricked my Note.
I got my replacement today and installed the newest cm9 nightly without any problems. Thats also the only ICS rom wihtout the risky LPY kernel.
If i where you, i wouldn't buy from germany to get official ICS. Just buy where you can get it cheap.
By the way: i think you can write quite reliable with the S-pen. I was a bit disappointed too, as i thought the pressure sensitivity would be more noteable. But after installing sketchbook pro and ICS thats no issue anymore.
The samsung apps do quite e good job for quick memos. For long meeting memos you might want to get a fullscreen app with more specific features as the screen is not on the big side for writing.

i will suggest u really sincerely! Note is a really great device! it is an awesome piece of technology and i definitely would recommend this phone to everyone! but the fact is it is not everyday thing that u go for such an expensive phone. everyone knows the fact that samsung is UGLY at software updates! it does provide next to no support to its phones! i know many of you would be thinking this to be wrong and i should let u all know that would be just for the sake of commenting not the reality! this is the reality that samsung does not provide DESERVING support to its phones!
lets come to the topic! i would recommend u personally and sincerely that u should wait for either S3 or even the Next Galaxy Nexus phone! YES its about to come! it will be equipped with even more better GPU! the Mali-T604. u might also look for the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet! go for the Note if you have LOADS of money!!!
Note all the way.

I want to thank you all for your precious advice. I am considering it all along with my research, but I can't justify spending 380 euros on a phone that is not the Galaxy NOTE. For example the Nexus S is the same price as the German NOTE and the Galaxy SII is about -50 euros cheaper than the NOTE so I cannot justify getting them.
The HTC ONE X is about 100 euros more expensive (650 euros), and so far the reviews have not been great. It is not much smaller than the NOTE without its' flexibility and battery life.
So let’s hope that I get a good one without many bugs, nevertheless I have a 2 year guarantee which I intend to use if something is wrong.

Thank you for the information. Could you please elaborate a bit on it? I understand that it does not come with ICS pre-installed and that I would need to do the update myself, which is not a problem as it is an official one. This is the first time that I read that a phone can be bricked by flashing official updates without a powecut (which can be solved by a laptop) or the USB cord getting disconnected in the middle of the flashing process.
Do all the German G.NOTEs come with this bug or not? The difference in price from buying one in Belgium is about 50-100 euros cheaper to get it from Germany that is why I was considering it. As the ROM is multilingual, and I never use the manual anyway the only prerequisite is being unlocked which they are.
So if you could explain that a bit I would greatly appreciate it.

I don’t have loads of money, that is why I am approaching this purchase very cautiously, but as I explained in the beginning of this reply from the economic point of view it looks like a smart choice when compared to the rest.
All of my smartphones were bought second hand from eBay but in very good conditions, nevertheless the price of a G.Note on ebay that is in good condition is so close to the price of a new one from a reliable shop and a 2 year guarantee that I just can’t justify getting it anywhere else.
Let’s hope I won’t regret it in 2 or 3 months
The note has bottomed out over 200 pounds over here in UK since release, I think it's fantastic value.

My Note experience
I would like to share my Note experience.
I am using it now for about 2 months and I am really really very happy with it!
The Note is absolutely a unique phone, with its huge and wonderful display and its amazing S-pen.
It took me some time, but now I find myself using more the pen than the finger!
I am also starting again to write with my hand! that's so cool! It was already forgotten - just typing and typing... but now I can write!
So, when I want to send a more personal email, I do it on hand-write! It feels so natural - and there is no one that doesn't wonder about it!
And this experience ONLY the Note can offer!
It surely is not a phone for every one, because it is big! But I am big and have big hands and pockets, so for me is ok.
The decision is yours, but I would warmly recommend you to get your Note as soon as possible!
Regarding bricks, don't worry - just avoid doing factory reset or full wipes, and that's it! This forum is full of safe guides - so just follow them.
My Note I upgraded to ICS using Odin with stock FW (LPY) to avoid waranty void. So far I can say that the ICS upgrade gave the Note an even better experience, including the Premium apps for the S-pen.
The Note 2 will be probably announced just in October, so it means at least 6 months wait and, of course, higher prices too, especially now that the Note prices droped a lot, making it an incredible bargain for a premium phone it is!
Go for it!!!
