If you're rooted, try the newest version of this:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Works great on my Vibrant.

Works excellent on Fascinate too.

Nevermind, I tried it on my desktop with an older version, and my laptop isn't able to find anything right now for some reason

Use barnacle legacy. The wireless tether apk link posted earlier only sets up computer-to-computer networks while barnacle sets up adhoc.

I'm using this on the fascinate and it works. Only issue is that it sets up a adhoc network instead of infrastructure. My laptop can still connect and get on the net so I'm ok with it.

Just started using this... worked like a charm. This has probably been addressed, but I have to ask to ease my mind. This won't incur any extra charges, correct?

If you are rooted then no...free...must be rooted...otherwise you have to sign up for a 30 dollar a month plan before it is unlocked...I'm a verizon rep (best buy mobile) I have a rooted dinc that I develop for...

Computer-to-computer & as-hoc networks are the same thing.
The official 3g hotspot application allows for infrastructure networks and greater security.
Has anyone managed to get the DroidX method of resetting the radio with the hotspot open to get it free working yet?

Wireless tether. Laptop sees it, incredible can't. Why?

Just wondering why my incredible can't see my network when I run wireless tether.
My laptop has no problem. So what is different?

I'm guessing because android isn't ad-hoc supported although I thought there was a work around on this site.

Thanks.
I will have a look around.

Anyone have any ideas about a workaround?

I use a program called barnacle legacy, and it sets up an ad-hoc network. I had to use this instead of the apk posted around here because that one created a computer-to-computer network, which my work laptop won't connect to (domain enrolling and all that.)
I'd say give that app a shot and get back to us.

wireless tether is ad-hov connections not interface; there's a big difference in the two.
computers can connect to both while cell phone's can only connect to interface connections.

Infrastructure mode is supported on droid incredible. dont know how they did it but i owned one so i know its possible.
Thanks for the replies.
Here is what I want to do...
I deactivated my incredible to get this fascinate.
I run wireless tether on the fascinate and would like to use the hotspot created to use the incredible.
For instance I could put the inc in it's windshield mount and get data to run navigation through the wireless network created from the fascinate.
I would love some help or at least to know if it can or cannot be done.
Great forum.
Fascinate oc1.2 for now

I just downloaded it from the market and ran it. Maybe it doesn't work on droid 2.
Theres another version apparently. The Legacy version was like a good version that worked for a lot of people, and I guess his newest version was something that didn't work for some, but worked for others.

DK17 kernal tethering

"Wireless Tether" works, its not hard to find that app.
Wired tether works without an app, just go to settings > wireless and networks > tethering.

I'm pretty sure 2.0.5 pre14 should work fine?
http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...name=wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre14.apk&can=2&q=
There is no solution for infer-structure tethering on Froyo yet..unless someone modifies the MobileAP app to make it work with Froyo..the person who made it work for 2.1 will not do updates for leaked builds...
I can confirm that the latest wireless tether (pre14) works fine on DK17
I can also confirm that Wireless Tether for Root Users 2.0.5-pre14 works on my Epic running Epic Experience 2.0.0.01 (DK17) where Wireless Tether for Root Users 2.0.2 (the one available in the app market) did not before.

[Q] I have my phone rooted, but I'm not able to tether my phone

I'm still on 2.1, but I rooted my phone using the one click root method. I downloaded the Wireless Tether app from the Marketplace, but I can never get the phone never sets itself up as a hotspot using that app. What am I doing wrong? No, I don't pay the $30 for the hotspot option from Sprint. Is that the problem?
To use Wireless Tether, you may need a custom kernel for it to work (not sure though)... Although, if you are still on the stock rom, I would suggest flashing MobileAP through CWM instead (LINK)
I use Wireless Tether and I'm rooted stock. Is the app giving error messages?

No, no error messages. I try to tether my iPad to my phone, but the hotspot never shows up. No data is ever transferred or uploaded.
As I don't know, does the iPad support connecting to ad hoc networks? If not, try installing MobileAP, which supports infrastructure mode (link in previous post).
Try downloading the wireless tether app from the google code page instead of the one from the market. There is a specific version for the Epic. Don't think the market one works correctly.

+1 to this, you may want to try searching "wireless tether" in the Epic forums. I recall in a few threads this was mentioned with specific version #s.

Best atrix tethering solution

I'm rooted. I cannot figure out a decent tethering solution. The stock version will not let me tether even though I'm rooted running greyblur. I've tried the wifi tether app and it never connects. I'm currently using barnacle but it seems to run really slow. Always under 1.0 mbps while my atrix alone is at 2-3mbps. What is everyone's tethering solution like?

And you have switched the APN in the network settings to the "Tether" one?
PDANet (on marketplace) should work as wired tether regardless.
Use Barnacle tether... its better than adding the Tethering APN. Download it from somewhere and then sideload it.

I think he already was using that
I thought by switching the apn at&t will know and begin harrassing you and eventually charging (in that order)
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
As far as I know, the only thing AT&T can see is your data usage. They'll go after you if your data use is suspicious or something. You have to use the "Tether" APN in order to have the wireless tether feature on the phone work at all without a plan.
Try WiFi Tether. Works same as Barnacle. Download .apk and install.
Sent from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium
If you have Limited Data then they can catch you easier. If you have unlimited its a little harder from what Ive hear. Plus using WiFi tether or Barnacle Tether is safer than using a new APN.

You don't need to change to tether APN to use Barnacle or WiFi Tether. Its not just data usage they see with using APN. This has already been discussed in another thread.

Nothing to do with data plan. They can see you are taking an extra "hop" so to speak when tethered using APN method. It can be faked out, but more trouble than its worth.

oooor you could just use Barnacle
In your APN settings, under the 'APN Type' heading it should read 'default'. Modify this to 'default, tether' without a space. Then turn wifi on. Wait a sex. Then turn on wireless hotspot/tether. Worked like a charm for me.

Care to share that article? I'd like to read it
Also, what I meant before was that you needed to change the APN in order to use the built-in tether feature, not a tether app ^^
I believe he is talking about TTL or Time to Live on packets. if your phone sends data back to AT&T it will always have the same TTL attached to the data packet, lets say 64 which means in 64 'hops' the packet will be discarded as undeliverable, if you tether to another device, the hop will be one less because it will go 64 from the computer/tablet/tethered device to the phone, reduce by one as its done one hop, then 63 from phone to the tower, if they AREN'T measuring tethers like this then they should, because its pretty productive.
all they have to do is check the data packets and watch as everything is 64 then suddenly 63's are coming through without a tethering plan. -caught them-

I've got an AT&T Atrix but am in Australia (hence not in AT&T network lol).
Is there a solution that doesn't involve root? I'm trying to keep a stock state until the big gingerbread OTA.

You will have to use one of the wired methods such as:
Klink
or

yeah thanks I guess I"ll live with it until gingerbread.

Mobile hotspots a no go.

I have been trying to get mobile hotspot to work on 1.83 to much disappointment. I have it rooted, I tried gladenabler, and I have even installed gingerblur as last rom it removed the verification altogether.
This time it is just not going away. I have also selected =false using root explorer for that one value that was listed in a previous post.
I am not on att I'm in another country with no tethering restrictions.
Any help would make me very grateful.
Thanks in advance.

Can't edit from my phone but in an update to what I wrote earlier. Editing the build.prop file actually worked but required a reboot.
In retrospect I should have thought of that but it wasn't listed in the op.
So, if you are also getting this problem
Follow the directions on this post

Then REBOOT AFTER.

I actually have an employee plan so 40 for unlimited and tethering but if you add the apn u can also use barnicle wifi tether. U can't find it on the market (anymore/F-u too att) you'll have to Google but it is better than using my included option in network settings. I have also used the open one on code.Google.com and has been great. I love my atrix and webtop and lapdock but if I had a chance at getting it all on tmo or sprint, I'd jump ship. Making Google hide apps from it's own users? Wtf? If I were sprint I'd be praying att buys tmo because everyone would run to sprint. If I didn't have said plan, I'm not sure I could take the abuse they give their high paying customers.
