Samsung is holding an event tomorrow to show off the media hub and the US galaxy tabs.
However, the question is, will they announce when froyo will be be available?
BTW, the event starts at 6pm EST.

Hopefully, after tomorrow there will be a much wider selection. I haven't been brave enough to actually pony up to pay for anything yet but, I have been pretty impressed so far with the quality of the previews that I have watched..
Can't wait, I hope they confirm Froyo because the G2 is getting right out of the box, we should have gotten that too.

That's too bad. Tab's and another mobile devices are worthless without 3g. You're basically left with a machine that you can only use to it's fullest potential at a Starbucks or at home.
I'm officially starting to get worried about the froyo update. Samsung has had two major press events in the past two weeks and haven't even mentioned a word about froyo. I'm starting to think only the European/Korean models will get froyo.
^^I believe Samsung never promised the US phones to have Froyo in sept, just the different forums members did. The Euro Galaxy S is scheduled to get Froyo, NO ONE said the US versions will be getting it in September

Dude, Samsung and TMO have both said that we're getting Froyo... chill the hell out.
Why did you guys think this press release would be about their phones? Of course, you were probably thinking they would mention it somewhere in the press, but in actuality it was mostly about their Tab.
Go to this link: http://phandroid.com/2010/08/31/samsung-mobile-experience-event-september-16th-whats-being-shown/
And read what it said. "Latest Android device and media hub."
Just saying. That's all.

Couldn't we just tether our phone and the tab? With mobile ap or any other tethering app? I would think if it doesn't work that way there would be an app or hack that could make it possible...

Yes, I am aware of that. I was giving a solution to the person I quoted. Not to mention that engadget is reporting that the 3g versions will most likely be sold on contract, possibly meaning you may need a data plan. I'm suggesting (if it is possible), wait, let the reviews from actual 3g users come in, and then by the wifi tab cheaper and off contract...

samsung is holding an event on the 16th to show off the media hub on the galaxy s phones and to show off some new models. I'd expect them to make an official announcement then since they've been rather quiet recently.

eh, the G2 isn't much of an upgrade over the slide so I'd say you made the right choice.
Well with verizon's version of the galaxy s out, i think there is nothing to hold a massive upgrade to all versions back.
given that the tab is going to be running froyo real soon, the galaxy s phones shouldn't be that far behind. in fact, i think they should get the update first, but hey, what do i know
is this the latest update we'll get? will we be getting 3.0?

Gingerbread would be great and a good pr move on the part of samsung. My expectation is low though simply because they will want people to buy new phones. Gingerbread will be an easy upgrade too because out would be vanilla with touchwiz and widgets being addons. The Tab has similar hardware and it may get it, making a custom ROM likely.

Last I checked, Samsung hasn't actually offered a phone to 100 carriers around the planet, including all 4 US national carriers.
As long as a single large American carrier demands the next version of Android, we ALL will get it.
I don't see the connection between froyo and the gps fix. If it was an android fix then we should have a fix already, I expect it is firmware based.

Well, Samsung is a Korean company first off. Second of all, carriers don't lock/change their handsets like the US does, so it gets much easier to update when you take the carrier out of the equation. This is why Europe/Asia get new phones and the updates for those phones before the US.
That is just how it is.

Lol whats funny is that engadget also reported that the UK Offical Samsung Mobile twitter page reported that
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/08/t-mobile-says-samsung-gps-fix-coming-in-september/
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/08/samsung-testing-gps-fix-for-galaxy-s-phones/
See two pieces of proof something is coming in September, we still have 10 days so lets see what happens.
So We do have like 3 Dates if you want to call it that.
One is September 23, 2010 for Froyo (2.2) which is supposibly for the International Galaxy S. Maybe it'll be compatible with all. Who Knows?
Two is September 29, 2010 for Froyo (2.2) which is for Galaxy S, IDK if all phones or Just International. IDK. I got this date from T-Mobile TODAY. I Called acted like i didnt know Anything about Android and was asking questions about The Samsung Vibrant. The guy said it comes with Android 2.1 but it'll get Android 2.2 soon. I asked if he knew a date, he said hes not for sure but he Read on a Forum somewhere about September 29, 2010. We'll See.
Three is Late October 2010. Which was told TODAY by Samsung Spain and posted on Engadget. So we have 10 days til September is over we'll see what happens. Thats all i know for now.
I'm Really eager like the rest of you to find out when our phones will get 2.2. Not only for Speed Improvement but for GPS Fixes (if implemented), 3 button hardware fix (if implemented) and of course Flash 10, Chome to Phone, the New G-Mail, Google Voice, and Tethering etc.
As eager as I am to get Froyo, I'd rather wait a little longer and let Samsung do it right than have them push something that's been rushed and running like crap. Based on the recent leaks I've seen, the most current Froyo builds have been buggy and not optimized at all.
I think late October/early November is my limit though. If they push it back further, I'm not supporting Samsung anymore. I'll switch to the G2. I can trust HTC will for sure push Gingerbread over to that phone. Who knows what Samsung will do with the Galaxy S then.
Fanboys need to stfu. You do realize many of us have buggy devices, and the fixes are being held up for froyo, right?
Dom't be idiots. Use your brains. The OS is a small issue right now. We want oir phones to work as advertised.
Yes, these buggy devices ARE complete and utter crap.

Well they both have an AMOLED screen and the Hummingbird processor...
Even if you were to get the Vibrant rom running on the Epic (after taking into account the differences in the file system) the phone would still be unusable. The Vibrant uses a different radio for phone calls, and data (3 and 4 G). So it would be pretty much useless as a phone.

But then again... Who knows?
end of November.” now
Late last week, Samsung announced that the Froyo or Android 2.2 update would finally be coming to the Galaxy S smartphone this week.
It seems that this won’t be the case, however, as the firm has issued an update via its official Twitter channel.
Samsung tweeted: “The Froyo upgrade will be available in the UK from early November and we expect all operator versions to be available by the end of November.”
So, early November could mean two to three more weeks before it lands on Kies, the company’s own Windows based upgrade platform, with operators pushing it out after that. The cause of the delay is unknown.
The Froyo update will bring a number of new features to the very popular Galaxy S, including a speed boost, full Flash support and device tethering, along with Google Maps GPS navigation plus voice guidance.

That is Samsun'g official Twitter channel for the U.K. That timing corresponds to a new press release from Samsung for the U.K. The "all operators" referred to, quite obviously, are the telecom operators in that market.
The corresponinding Twitter site for the U.S. says there is no ETA yet.
And the earlier announcemetn you mentioned was also about overseas markets.

It's been said multiple times in the past month that they will be coming out in November.
This from Samsung USA's twitter as well - "yes. all current Galaxy S phones in the USA will be upgraded to Android 2.2 this year."
Actually I'm pretty sure that it W's confirmed that the particular comment you are talking about DID NOT apply to the variants in the states. However I was just being sarcastic anyway. It doesn't really matter to me at this point as froyo from Samsung is literally going to suck ass because the one thing that kills these phones is the one thing a firmware update wont fix, and that's RFS. Anyway, good day sir. Hope you are correct, that way we can get some good froyo ROMS rollin

Gosh man. I'm not trying to start a fight nor am I saying u r wrong. However as I have stated multiple times. NO WHERE does it say "Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce that the android 2.2 froyo update is available for ur fascinate" nor have any of their tweets mentioned it.
Edit: all galaxy s variants doesn't mean fascinate. Call Samsung itself and ask they will tell u they know nothing.
Edit: sorry just saw where u said end of year. Not November. All good. Last Samsung phone ill ever buy.

In regards to Android updates...
-"New guidelines! Man, this is going to be huge. Google's laying out a timeline for how long it'll take a device to get updated once a new build is let loose, as well as how long it'll be updated beyond that."
-"These shown will be provided timely updates for at least 18 months provided the hardware can handle it. Whoa. WHOA!" -Samsung included here
http://media.xda-developers.com/images/editor/separator.gif
-"The keynote's moving on, but our head is still spinning here. And we're sure the heads of Epic 4G owners are as well." Engadget targeting us.
Linky.
So it looks like Google is taking care of fragmentation. Also they announched Ice Cream Sammmmicch and their goals for unity. In addition, Google Music. Quick get your invites at http://music.google.com
Also, looks like Google has prepared a sweet Arduino dev kit for USB + bluetooth (in the future) for Android devices. Definitely a ton of potential.
Also, they announced [email protected] automation for Android tablets/phones.
And yes... I capitalized NEWS versus Huge, just to be different.
Good for Google for taking the proper steps to mend the biggest problem with their platform.

Free Galaxy Tab 10.1 for attendees! I'm jealous!
Good stuff. So I guess the "Samsung will never update past Froyo" crap can be put to an end for good. Sprint/Samsung both on board (maybe forced by Google, I don't care how) to support updates 18 months into the life of the devices (if they can handle it) which they SHOULD when they took away the yearly upgrades from most folks.
Also, the movie rental thing Google is releasing looks NICE. So much for Samsung's media hub. Google isn't charging an arm an a leg for rentals either.

That's 5,000 Galaxy Tabs. Damn. They know how to put on a show.
Everybody should watch it, a lot of cool stuff. Remember, this is only the first day of I/O.
Also, Engadget's front page is full of I/O stuff right now if you don't have time to watch the video but still want some more info.
Oh, and I thanked you k0nane to make it so you have 1001 thanks. Sorry.

True. Guess it puts to bed that they never will update past Gingerbread
I have little doubt now my phone will at the very least have Ice Cream before my upgrade time rolls around.

With the close Sprint/Goog collaboration on Voice I bet Sprint is going to start coming fast and furious with updates.

By the way, where was Kyocera on that list of partners? I pity anyone who gets suckered into buying that dual screen disaster.

I would think that about a year ago, but the AT&T+T-Mob and Verizon+iPhone make Sprint the natural choice for stronger Google ties, as it needs the "best" hardware and software to compete on a level with the two giants. This process has already started with Voice integration and releasing a Sprint Nexus
The closer Google holds Sprint, the better it is for us and the better/faster the updates come to the Goog Network.

At the same time, that puts Sprint as the only major carrier without an iphone...and I hope they dont go deeper into trying to compete with it by putting all their resources into 1 phone basket... like they did with the Instinct, Pre, Evo...
Now if the carriers and manufactures can come to a agreement on how to properly handle dud phones. I by no means hope there is another debacle like the Samsung Moment was but it is a shame what some had to go through to get rid of that lemon and stupider Sprint kept selling it even though its issues were documented to the umteenth degree.

I don't want to burst any bubbles, but everything I have read about the 18 month update thing pertains to "new" devices. Not saying they won't apply the same standard to our phones and other phones, but the announcement was from here on that new devices would stay updates for at least 18 months.
