What's the point of Auto update? - Galaxy S I9000 General

Just looked and found a notification saying "Update available for Google Maps. Manual update required" This when I had the auto update checkbox checked. Seems a bit redundant to me.

i belive that is the "automatically check for updates"
i've yet to see a feature for the softwares to automatically install updates without your confirmation
you just need to go to Android Market and click on the apps that says "update available"
then it does everything else automatically

It is something you can look forward to in 2.2

i'll definitely not check that box after this incident

I would never want apps to auto update themselves. Just imagine an app like Navigon deciding to randomly download a 100 MB update while you are away from wifi. Or even worse an app auto-updating to a broken version.

Google maps listed as not installed?

Does anyone's Google map appeared uninstalled in the android market? It keeps listing Google maps as an app not installed at the bottom of "my app" list. I reinstall it on my device each time, but every so often it reappear at the bottom the list as uninstall.
I've got this too -- also have it with the YouTube app.
I'm not sweating it, it'll probably get fixed in a subsequent OTA.
In "Market ", mine constantly shows as "downloading ".

Go to settings -> applications -> manage -> and clear data from market. Don't download youtube from the market because it's not the honeycomb optimized version (atleast wasnt for me)

Having the same problem. I've already tried the "clear data" approach, but it still does it. Not worried about it though because both apps work just fine for me, but it does need to be fixed.

Already did unfortunately. I think there was a youtube app right? that was somewhat honeycomb optimized? how do i get that back?
Its likely that the preinstalled versions do not exist on the market yet. It doesn't detect the newer version so it shows you maps since you probably have it installed on another device. Just don't worry about it. Once the first honeycomb maps update is out, it will fix itself.

I get this too, it does not bother me that it shows as not installed, even when i tell it to install it again, what gets me is that it keeps on giveing me that market icon that tells me there is an update or something else.

Android Market

I was not sure where to post this since there isn't a general Android section, and it relates a bit to my XOOM.
So since the web version of the Android market came out, which is basically the same version that is on 3.0. I noticed it does not really work.
I have it setup with my gmail account, which is the account I have on my HTC Desire and now my Motorola XOOM. The market does not seem to keep track of everything I have installed or uninstalled.
If I have something installed from the market on my phone, and go to that app on the web version, it shows the normal Install button. Sometimes I think even if it was installed from the web version and I come back later it does not show that its installed. Even now with the updated market on my XOOM it seems to do the same thing, sometimes certain apps don't show up as installed.
Also, the market on the XOOM, if I am scrolling a category, and click on something to install, when I go back to that list, I am back to the top of the list, not where I was. This only happens on the XOOM version.
Ideas?
I can't really explain the not-installed showing up thing. But I can assure you that all of us have the problem of going back to the top of the list.

Well that is good to know, at least for the one thing.
My market will not automatically update any of my apps that I have selected to, I have to do it manually on every app, it is however tracking all of my apps so I don't have the same issue there.

Market do Update
The market can a automatically update your appm you just have to select that option. It is is usually not selected by default. However I have only use this options in the build in market app, not the website. I have not even tried the site market. The market AP on my xoom does the trick. So to make it auto update, you need to go into the market app on your xoom, click on "my app", select any app on the left of the page, and on the right you will see information about that app, on that same page there is a an option that says "allow automatic update" with a check box before it. So all you do is check the box or click on it and that's it. Works for me. Goodluck

[Q] Disable all automatic updates

I searched about this but I can not find a solution I want to disable all automatic app updates I only found answer do disable automating updates one by one in the Market app but I want to disable them all for I do not waste traffic when I am on 3G data with Wi-Fi I am OK. Does deactivating auto app sync in background under sync and account config do the trick? Even if it does I prefer the option disable all that I think the Market app once add because I need that some apps communicate with the net.
Thanks in advance
Poke around in settings, I know I have automatic updates disabled but I can' t seem to find the settings. In order for me to update, I have to go in to "My Apps" and manually update them.
This isn't the perfect solution to your quandary, but I don't think there is one...
In the Market app, go to Settings, and under Notifications change it from "Notify me" to "Do not notify me".
This will at least keep Market from checking for updates in the background (if I'm not mistaken), and your apps won't be automatically updated unless you open the Market app (again, if I'm not mistaken).
I seen that option but though that was just for notification purposes but In the computing world intuition is not always respected so I belive that will do the trick.
I will try it and post results
i am puzzled by this, but unless you have some sort of ungodly amount of apps installed you can go through the 'my apps' section and uncheck the update automatically check box and since it is off by default you will never have to do it again
Care to explain a little better are you referring disable automating updates one by one in the Market app as I said in my original post?
Thanks
You could also try Droid Wall and try to disable the Market from using 3G Data, and only use your home internet data or whatever.
In Titanium Backup, you can do this. Hardware menu button>more>market auto updates. This option may only be available in the paid version, I dunno. But Titanium is an awesome app and well worth the money.

I tried that but in the first day of August in less then a hour I used all my traffic in my 100mb data plan and I was just reading sites with no heavy java or images, called the phone company and they confirmed that was traffic.
"In the Market app, go to Settings, and under Notifications change it from "Notify me" to "Do not notify me" actually I think this only worsened the issue because when i lost all my allowance I did not see any notification of updates happening if I would be notified i would try to cancel the updates as i already did a few times although this option works randomly.
This issue is pertinent and lots of people are experiencing the same

I think I am not rooting anymore because I ordered an Xperia Play and I will sell the Nexus One if everything runs well with the Play

[Q] Updating apps on the TPT

On my phone I get either automatic updates or a notice to update.
I've had 3 in the last day on my phone but no way I can find to do the updating on my TPT.
How do you update the aps?
Thanks,
Shofar
Mine updates pretty much the same as my Nexus One. Market notifies when update is available and I click update and it downloads and installs, asking permission usually if I want to update. If it doesn't find updates, try opening Android Market and selecting "My Apps".
It should show updates for the apps that have one.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.
PS. If this doesn't work, you could always try going into Settings > Applications > Manage > All > Market > Clear data.

The statusbar, bottom right, will have the Android or Amazon Market icon when it finds updates. If you set the programs to auto-update then it will just say x many updated, and you can click for details. If the apps aren't set to auto-update, the icon will open a list of available updates for you to approve.

Sometimes the checkin does not work correctly.
The easiest way is to open market and select my apps from top bar.
Any available updates will show and you can click to update from there.
Fail to install
I have seen a case where apps sometimes fail to install the first time, and you need to go to my apps in the market and click install again. Perhaps this is what op is referring to. Haven't seen this since the update, it may have been fixed.

How to disable OTA update?

I don't want 4.2.2, my phone has it downloaded but not installed. How do I delete the update and/or disable the notification? I've searched and tried options for other phones but nothing has worked except what I did below.
I found that if I freeze "Google framework services" it does what I want, but it also disables all google services (play store, etc) is there another way around this?

SOLVED(temp?):
Downloaded an App called "autostarts",
go into the tab called "after startup"
scroll down to you see multiple "google framework services"
for me it was the 3rd one, should say "xxxx--xxxx-xxx-systemupdateservice" or something like that
disable it, clear cache and reboot.
May I ask why you'd want to disable the OTA updates?
Just curious...

Count me in on this - spent a while this morning trying to find any info on others trying to disable this update (I just got the notification this morning). I'm stock rooted and perfectly happy with my N4 as is. I wish there was a way to just cancel the notification or have it not remind you for a while. It's obnoxious that they cram it in your face.
