Battery Life Guide - Worth a read if you are having issues. - XPERIA X10 General

Ive spent the last few days fiddling and testing stuff to increase battery life. Here is what i have learnt...
(Im running R2BA026)
Firstly, personally i do not want to lose any functionality/performance in order to gain battery life. I think that if you are going to spend the money to get a phone with awesome hardware it should be able to run at full whack.
This guide will not be useful to all, but hopefully it will be handy to those in my situation.
This is a guide for what i have found to be the best compromise between battery life and user experience, with the emphasis being on user experience.
My specific goals are:
- I do not want to lose any performance i.e cause any slowdown/choppiness.
- I am only looking for a 24h battery life as i can charge every night.
- I want to be able to use my phone without worrying about battery. Specifically I never want to think "i shouldnt do that it might run down my battery". I should be able to use all the features on my phone without questioning if i can afford to.
-=-
In my experience using a task killer resulted in only minimal gains to battery life but it meant that opening up apps could be a lot slower and apps could be choppy just after opening them.
Additionally the idea of setCPU is a good one however when coming out of sleep or opening an app it takes a little while to get back up to speed. This also causes choppiness. Personally I find lag/choppiness a real pet peeve, it irritates me alot, so I do not use setCPU either. It is true that with careful set up the lag can be minimised but then the battery life gains are also minimal, so I choose to keep full performance and dispense with setCPU. Bear in mind that the hardware platform is already very efficient and well optimised so a software solution will pretty much be a straight trade of performance for battery life.
-=-
With those two common options out of the way, what else can be done to save juice?
Well generally the biggest consumer of energy is the screen. The simplest option is just to turn it down to minimum brightness, but in my opinion that is not a good solution, its too nice a screen to have dimmed all the time. Thankfully the auto-brightness does a pretty good job of keeping the back light at a good level. It can be a bit disconcerting if you enable it when using full brightness as the drop can seem somewhat dramatic but don't let that put you off, give at 1/2 a day or so and you wont even notice.
Other easy but important things you can do are turning the screen timeout to minimum and always turning off the screen (power button) as soon as you are finished. They are tiny changes but really do make a big difference.
-=-
Onto wifi...
I think there may be a bug with the firmware because if I disable wifi I get a HUGE increase in battery life when Im at home. I have good 3g coverage here and a 3GB allowance so I only need to turn on wifi when Im browsing the web or market, seeing as it takes seconds with the widget this option suits me fine.
I suspect that when the phone is connected to wifi it doesn't sleep properly so drains very fast.
Only turning on wifi when i want it made by far the biggest difference to me, and as it doesn't affect my user experience in any appreciable way I am happy to do it.
I think its a good idea to mention app/widget updates and refreshes here, personally i have all my widgets and apps set to refresh only once a day, that suits me fine because I can refresh them all manually very easily if I want to to be absolutely up to date and I'm not a twitter or facebook addict Most of my widgets are news/article based so once a day is perfect.
-=-
GPS, again this is rather obvious, if you don't use it, turn it off. Personally i use latitude so I have it turned on all the time. Android seems very good about only using it when it is needed and the phone seems to get a fix very quickly so in reality it doesn't spend much of the day being active.
Same goes for bluetooth, although I don't use it so it stays off.
-=-
Nothing i have said here is particularly revelatory mostly common sense but I have always had battery issues often with the battery lasting ~12 hours before asking to be charged.
Updating to 026 made a big difference and following these rules means my battery drains on average 2-2.5% an hour under normal use.
Normal use for me:
-Wifi Off
-GPS on (With latitude widget)
-Gtalk always running
-3 news widgets + timescape
-frequent texting
-moderate calls
-frequent fiddling
The phone is very very snappy, everything apart from timescape opens as near to instant as makes no odds, the phone is a pleasure to use. My battery life has comfortably doubled without the use of any apps or any loss of performance.
Mission Accomplished

Thanks
Cheers for that. Very interesting .
I definitely agree about the task killer apps, the OS does a perfect job at running itself!
One question, Am i correct in presuming you have 3g always running? Network mode set to GSM/WCDMA preferred? Ive been afraid to do this as i have it in my head that 3g eats up my battery for fun! I'll have to try it out.
Thanks again!

I bought an extended battery for my X10 the sloping sides stop it looking like a brick. The G1 always looked like a brick with an extended battery but the X10 sloping sides do serve a purpose.

Yep, thats correct With the 3g on it seems to stay in 2g when sleeping then switch to 3g when you wake it, you can see the change in the status bar about a second after waking. Pure speculation though ...
Well, let us know how you get on with 3g active all the time

I love how slim the x10 is, that combined with the fact that the 3rd party backs are ugly and can be poor fitting mean an extended battery isnt really an option for me, whatever suits though ^^

It's from Sanyo. It's being released in Japan in October, but, I'm sure it will come out internationally as well.

Some additional tips based on my personal experience:
-Using a third-party task launcher helps too. Some may not agree, but it works for me.
-Use a third-party digital clock widget instead of the stock one. Again, YMMV.
-Use a third-party(AGAIN!) MP3 player instead of Mediascape. I'm using Meridian, and notice an increase in battery life when playing MP3s.

I like having some control so I run task killer but there's no auto-kill enabled and if I know the phone is just going to turn it back on in 5min, I don't bother killing those apps. Maybe I should just remove it altogether, but it seems convenient to be able to kill an app at will (I do it with windows sometimes).

I think the reason why you find that the stock one drains your battery is due to the "use network provided values" being checked in the date and time settings.

Interesting article. I am running 024 and my battery is life is poor. I managed to get seven hours use yesterday after a full charge. My usage throughout the day wasn't anything too crazy. Where I work I get only a standard signal (no 3G). I seem to get a better battery life.

I agree battery life is horrible. It makes me really miss my blackberry.
Even when battery life is low, charging it takes FOREVER, not to mention if you plug it in and play with it at the same time, it charges even slower.
My Blackberry Tour charged fully in what seemed like 45 mins from less than 10% batt life. I know they are different phones, but it just really sucks to me.
I'm debating going back to a blackberry now. The X10 and other android phones (and Iphone), are more toys than anything else.
/end rant.
hehe sorry

Thats odd, my phone charges pretty damn fast, just a few days ago i was pleasantly surprised that it charged from completely empty (id forgotten to charge it) to ~80% in less than an hour.

Hmm, mine charges from <10% to 100% within 1 - 2 hours.
Make sure you are charging by AC, charging by USB does indeed take forever.

Quite interesting for me, I decided to add some statistical experiment about it.
Under my situation and environment. (I won't go in detail, sorry about that)
With SetCPU were 2.32% per hour without any usage.
W/O SetCPU were 3.18% per hour without any usage.
or approximately 7% maximum saving per day time. (for me)
My SetCPU only effected sleep state.
Not a big deal but still significant different, but it could survive for whole day anyhow.
I'm more interested about Killing app. I might try after this as I see many argument about it.

Ohh figures, good stuff! Always better to have some numbers to work with.
Do you not find that for a few seconds after waking up the phone gets choppy?
I would definitely be interested in seeing the stats with a task killer

Do you guys leave internet/gps on or something? I get 3 hours/percent on idle.

Yup, with SetCPU for sleep state, it was 'choppy' for a few sec, mostly effect lock screen and screen switching.

[TUT/GUIDE] How to get better battery life

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to help out those people out there who are getting terrible battery life with their G2's. I made this thread because all of the other threads that have a screenshot of someone getting about 14 hours of battery life have just the screenshot and no explanation of how they got this great battery life.
This is after quite a bit of usage (probably about 3 hours of internet browsing and about 1/2 hour of angry birds
Obviously this will only apply to you if you are rooted.
Step 1: Download and flash this kernel.
Step 2: Set SetCPU to this:
NOTE: If you go any farther than 960mhz then the cpu voltage will be raised, causing lower battery life. Everything below and including 960Mhz is the exact same voltage with this kernel so you won't get any improvement by lowing the cpu freq.
Step 3: Disable profiles. ALL profiles.
^_^
Other Tips and Tricks
DON'T USE TASK KILLERS. THEY DON'T WORK.
Hello? Did this help anyone?

Thanks for this link! I'm trying this out as we speak. I was previously running the GODspeed 1.4 Overclock with ok battery life..so i'm curious to see how this works. I'll definately keep you updated!
I always have a "screen off" profile with the frequencies set to 245/500, and I get insane battery life. Went over 14 hours yesterday, and I still have 55% remaining when I plugged in. That was also on the stock CM kernel. I'm trying out the UV kernel right now.

It's only been a few hours that this has been posted (and at least in the States, a Sat. morning). Just give it some time. Also, I think quite a few people are running this kind of set up already (based on the numerous discussions seen in the various rom and and kernel threads anyway), so they probably aren't inclined to reply/vote. Even if they weren't doing this, you probably can't expect any results from people for at least a day or two (unless their battery usage was really bad to begin with, they aren't going to know how much this helps until after the change has been in place for a while).
Just a heads up, Pershoot updated his kernel so that the voltages from 768-960 are now the same as at 979, so you might want to update the guide. Also, just wondering why you recommend the performance governor over on demand if you are looking to improve battery life? Won't the performance governor stay at the higher clock speeds for longer periods of time than on demand? Or did you think this was an acceptable tradeoff (as in things don't run as smoothly for you on on demand and you felt the extra power usage was negligible). Just curious. I had always run on demand or conservative for battery life, but conservative is no longer supported in the Pershoot kernel (and some times led to slight lag in my display turning on).
Also, I'm not positive on this since I don't use Sense roms, but I heard that because Pershoot's kernel was designed to run specifically on AOSP-based roms, it may cause problems with Sense ones. Might want to either put a warning in your guide or verify that this isn't the case.
Ok, I'm following this guide, just flashed the kernel, it took more to backup than to actually install the kernel, on CM6.1.1, will check in tomorrow if I see any improvement, because I used to get only about 6hrs of battery life as I was before.
I always have wifi all day at home since my carrier (Movistar Venezuela) does not have 1900/2100 frequencies.
Thanks for the information. Although it is common.

I'm just reporting what I found. Perhaps the ondemand governer is using more power because its constantly checking the cpu utilization?

Here's some:
Use the stock charger. I believe the stock charger provides power at 5.5V (I'd have to check to know for sure), because that is the voltage the battery was designed for. A lower voltage could mean that your phone *thinks* it's charging at 5.5V and will stop charging when it *thinks* it's at 100%, while in reality it might only be at 80% or less. Higher voltages could wear out the battery faster but provide faster charging times.
Calibrate your battery. Roughly once a month, let your battery completely runs out (after it shuts down again, turn it on again until it's fully out), let it charge while off, and repeat at least once again. This may have a significant effect depending on how you use your phone
Turn off unneeded services while not in use. Having WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, autosync, facebook sync, widgets, etc can harm battery. It is super simple to put toggles in your notification bar with either CM, MIUI, or Enom's roms that it is pretty much a painless way to dramatically improve your battery life. Facebook sync can be a huge waste too if you have it updating automatically, try instead refreshing it manually. Get rid of widgets that "seem" useful, but in reality just take up ram, download useless data, and take up space. I mean, I like to be able to know the temperature or whether I should bring a jacket, but do I really need the news to be right there in my face 24/7? Widgets like that would have to be constantly downloading data to be even be relevant, and IMO it is easier to just open an app. You can leave GPS on though, as the phone only activates it when necessary.
Update your radio to the latest available. This one is just common sense. The radio is basically the driver which your phone uses to connect to the cell tower, so wouldn't it make sense to have the newest, most efficient radio? I use the .02.17 radio and it is definitely better than the radio that came with the phone originally. Use Gfree before you switch because getting s-off with .02.17 is a pain in the butt.
Those are just some of the things I've realized with both my G2 and my G1 before it.

No, task killers don't work at all on Android. Especially so after 2.2.

I'll get out my multimeter later to test this.
However, I don't think that's true. It probably just figures out whether it's on a usb port or ac charger by seeing if there's power on the DATA lines inside the usb cable. iPod Touches and iPhones REQUIRE this power so they recognize it as a usb port, otherwise they WILL NOT charge. This explains why, if I plug in my G2 into a charger designed for an iPhone (same specs, 5V out at 1.0A) it will register as USB to the phone and will charge quite slowly.
Again, this is all going off assumptions. I'll put my thoughts up against my multimeter readings later. ^_^

So yesterday morning I woke up at 9 am and went to ihop, I disconnected my phone from the charger at around 920 at 100% by the time it was 1040 ish I randomly looked at my phone and noticed my battery was at 33%?!?!?!? And I went crazy:O yet when I got home I charged it to around 83% disconnected at 730..then at 12 am when I got home I was barely at 61%?!?! Whatsoever the reason for this?!?!?!

I had this very problem with my G2... it fixed itself like yours did. I think it was probably either skype or qik, as the problem went away after I uninstalled them. You might have had a hung up application running in the background.

I suppose I'm one of those people who had no issues with their battery, but I recommend using a screen off profile for SetCPU. In doing so, I can effectively go almost a full two days on a single charge, but this is with minimal usage. Such as texting and browsing the web for only a few minutes.

[Q] Is switching to iPhone just because of battery a bad decision?

I am sick of poor performance of my EVO's battery. I am not able to use the phones full capability for sake of battery exhaustion fear. My Evo last for 6-7 hour a day for very light(almost no) use.
I juice up 6-7 Hours by:
1) Disabled background data in setting
2) Use Juice Defender
3) Uninstalled useless app from Sprint via Titanium Backup (this proves I am rooted)
4) Refrain my self to use phone for long voice call (less than 30 minutes a day)
5) Refrain my self to use applications. (Forget about Data hoggers like Netflix and other I use skyfire or Dolphin browser to read newspapers.)
6) Scheduled my Emails to sync once a day
The points 4,5 and 6 really pisses me off. If I can use my phone as a phone at the end of the day then what is the purpose of having a cell phone??
Anyways I am not using my EVO and Sprint's 4G to full potential in fear of battery. iPhone will mostly not offer me most of the things so I will be saving most of the battery at-least for a day and be able to talk more.(What most of the iphone users are claiming with coming of iOS5)
Switching to iPhone the biggest thing I have to lose is flash. I was thinking 4G network but again I am not using 4G most of the time in fear of saving battery.
In a phone these 3 features will fulfill my appetite:
1) Able to make calls
2) Use web browser
3) Use Navigation
It would be great to know what ROM and kernel you are using.
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712990
Let's keep in mind, the Evo's core is old and big.
It is an early 2009 core, in fact.
The newer cores, say in the Evo 3D, are half the size and much more efficient on the power consumption.
sounds like your phone isn't sleeping. what rom/kernel you running?
get spare parts app and see what's causing your wake lock
I used to have an iphone and never really got a good battery life out of it either, maybe a full 8hrs with normal usuage. Have u ever considered an extended battery? 2700mah's are relatively cheap on the internet. I have one and with heavy usage I can barely get it to drop below 50% on most days
lol with your "light" usage i could easily make it through two days. Something must be wrong.
I make it a whole day with sync on, background data on, push email, no juice defender, reading xda for a while, bunch of texts, and a little bit of calls.
+1 on using spare parts to find out what.
Using nav will eat your battery... no doubt about that. I will on the Iphone as well though.
I am completely stock right now and don't have my Trident Electra shipped in yet, so stock battery. I leave background data on, sync mail and other apps hourly, use Pandora and Dolphin HD regularly, Google Maps as needed, don't talk a lot but text and GMail constantly, and I have no problem getting through 10 to 12 hours without charging. Not as good as my old BlackBerry, but not horrible considering the huge screen and multiple uses. And being uprooted right now, all I use are Startup Manager and Advanced Task Killer with low security and crazy autokill on. Your screen must be awake constantly for some reason, I would look in to that.

Agreed, my phone (and battery) are over a year old and I would still get over a day of use with your usage. If you are considering going iPhone for battery alone but prefer Android OS, I would say no as there are other options to try first. However, if there are other reasons you want to go iPhone such as you prefer iOS or some other factor, then yes, you should switch.
OP, definitely post up what ROM/kernel you are running. I have a mod for AOSP kernels that helps battery life even more, so I'd be happy to get you a good setup
For me personally, an external battery charger fixed all my battery problems. Before I got mine, I swear I would unplug my Evo and by the time I hit my door it was showing 95%. As soon as I got the external, even on a completely stock Evo I got almost an hour of light use before it dropped at all. Since the gingerbread update though, battery use is simply amazing. I can work a 9 hour day and with light use I go home with 65-70% battery left.

As soon as I got the external, even on a completely stock Evo I got almost an hour of light use before it dropped at all. Since the gingerbread update though, battery use is simply amazing. I can work a 9 hour day and with light use I go home with 65-70% battery left.

I agree. I charge my battery in an external charger, that takes it to 100%.
Phone has been off charger for 10 hours now, with texting, surfing, few phone calls, and some games and I am at 71%
Even if I didn't use an external charger, worst case now I would be at 61%.
Something is wrong with your phone, or you have ****ty service where you are.
No way... that would be a reason to switch from an iPhone.
My iPhone friends are always cording up to recharge. I just reach into my fifth pocket to take out my spare battery, pop back cover and depleted battery out, replace with the fresh and power up. I never have to ever hover around a corded phone afraid to miss a call.
Don't understand how people would purchase a portable electronic device that you can't change the battery. To me that is unacceptable. I was able to do that in the sixties, why can't I do that now.
That is why these battery threads, at least to me, are superfluous.
Of course, YMMV. You all carry on about the battery work a rounds. Just letting you know there might be another way.

Honestly the reasoning, knowing Apple, is likely because they can control what battery you use, if you cannot remove it.
Preventing aftermarket batteries.
Stupid? Yeah.
Typical Apple? Yeah.
I wouldn't doubt I'm right.
1. Try a different kernel and/or ROM
2. Get an extended battery if you feel you need it. ( iPhone your stuck with the stock battery no matter what)
Problem solved.
Would Foghorn' Leghorn make a really bad narrator?
On topic: The iPhones battery starts to lose charge after about 7-8 months and its $75 to have it replaced. Battery life is definitely better but at least with HTC you can replace your own batteries; for a very small fee might I add.
Someone has a new avi lol.

THATS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL. I gave in to buying the extended battery from best buy for 70 bucks. And finally my battery lasts all day. I'm running decks x I think with tiamat 4.0.4 and viperboys mod and I used to not make a day without the extended battery. When u buy a phone it should last a day without extra money spent... so I'm either waiting for iPhone to come to sprint, nexus 3 if it has good battery life, or the photon 4g. Maybe even the sgs2. Engadget also reviewed the evo 3d, and said the battery might be worst than the evo 4g.

Battery love (life) on VillainRom 1.4.0

So i'll cut to the chase, Battery has been ok with stock rom, after freezing the **** out of some apps, BUT, with VillainRom the phone is working perfect + battery life is amazing.
What is amazing?
53 Hours and 30 minutes since full charge.
I did charge it in the car for very short periods while using GPS and screen on full brightness.
How was the phone configured?
- Wifi/3G Data on at all times
- Push GMAIL and What'sapp
- Screen Brightness on full and the "Adjust screen power" option ticket off.
- Lookout installed and running in background.
- Bluetooth always on, not always connected though.
- 3 Hours of display usage
- 1.5 Hours of calls
- Some gaming, browsing etc.
Don't believe me?
Here are screenshots!

Well done mate i wish i could manage it myself.

Anyway still don't understand what's good about this battery stats ...
@sumeshd,
You know, I don't get money from Samsung or anyone else for posting this? Why would I lie? Anyway, believe what you what, I really don't care that much.
I'll just say again, brightness is @ FULL.
3 Hours, is not ONLY, that's my usage, and you don't have to like it or not.
@bilboa1,
If I wanted, I can charge the phone almost 24/7 I got a charger my car, at home, at work, and even a portable solar one.
The charging peaks you see are mainly USB file transfers for a few minutes, and the long ones are around 30 minutes while driving with GPS + Screen at full brightness.
So the consumption on those moments is rather high, which means the battery isn't charging all that much.
@Mittaa,
You take a 4.3" Smartphone that does everything, and get 53 hours out of it, it's not enough??
if the little charging peaks were not there i'd still get around 46 hours from the phone, is that not enough???
Anyway the information I posted was to help people who are trying to choose a ROM, chose this one, or other people who are having battery problems have a reference.
eitama dont bother posting let this thread die please .
Two reasons one you will find certain users insist you have poor gps yellow screen bad battery life etc . Not worth bothering with if you are happy with your phone .
Reason two is a bit selfish as posting VR great battery life means we are going to get hundreds of numptys posting in VR rom thread who wont read and cannot follow instructions .

Nice to hear that your happy with your phone ... i'm happy too
I also understand that this is way better than your old desire HD (same for me moving from my old HTC Touch HD)
But I can't understand what this have to do with "whatever Vanilla Rom" ...
Lots of people can get this kind of battery live using stock unmodified, non rooted SGS2!
It could be very usefull if someone made a exact compare between two SGS2 running different ROMs.
First same configuration (screen brightness, auto update, widgets etc) then full charge.
Then 15 min GPS (same route), 15 min browsing WIFI (same websites), 15 min gaming (same game), 15 min talking (same person (sorry bad joke)).
Al together 1 hour of heavy identical usage.
Finally screenshots of battery stats and post here on XDA so we all can clap our hands for the best bettery saving ROM of the week
Well I tried to drain the battery on vr playing games etc to calibrate, and struggled, like noonski did.
I could drain stock rom with ease, but can't do it nearly as easily on vr.
The general consensus from reliable members like nobnut and jje seems to concur with it being better

PS: note the screen wake time bfor commenting..(its awake most of the time bcoz my heavy txting and use)..
and I am on 3g/h network with data active all the time..
this is the best I could get till now(with my usage)
no hard feelings..
People seem to be getting time between charges that vary wildly, but for me the biggest indication of battery life is obviously 'display on' time, and this seems to be roughly the same for the vast majority. Best I've seen so far is 4 hours, and that was mainly 3G/HSPDA browsing. My most recent however was slightly over 2 hours with VR 1.4, and again that was mainly browsing with data.
So while a screenie showing over 2 days may look impressive, it's how much actual use the user got that's important. The post above that showed over 6 hours was certainly impressive, but how much 3G browsing was done? How many 3D games played? GPS? etc etc
<shamed> - sorry for long post!!!
@ OP - you had a few minutes under 3hrs of charging. That is in excess of a full charge of the battery! And a total screen of a a few hours.. Nothing impressive at all. Saying you had on GPS and screen on full brightness negates the charging is just silly. It is usage, and usage is what we're interested in.
@ mittaa + Zedwings: Completely agree with both. Even display on (IMO the most accurate comparison) is a long way from the full truth for comparison in testing and a very fixed test environment would be needed to test a pattern of usage. I started to think about this like mitaa suggests (and when you do, you realise it is virtually impossible to co-ordinate without resetting back to factory) and there are still variables.
And anyway, it's kind of irrelevant at that point. You wouldn't consider doing it unless you're battery life is not meeting your hopes or needs. but your usage is your usage and you'll be happy or not.
Unless you are prepared to compromise on screen time, game playing, widgets, sync settings, live wallpaper etc, then what does it matter? You must find the balance between battery life and customisation that YOU can live with.
Personally, I do this by running my phone in 'full fat' mode. All radios on (this inc. GPS), synch on full, screen set to about 75% (no auto), the widgets I want, high spec live wallpaper (like Galaxies!) that make my £500 phone look like a £500 phone. I settle into my daily usage pattern, charging whenever I need to charge. This is why I bought my phone, not to immediately turn everything off and play the 'longest, littlest' game!
After about two weeks and this has settled into a fairly regular pattern, I start to switch off the things that mean least to me, one by one, day by day until after a numbers of days I find the balance that I can live with.
Personally I start with turning into perm 2G mode as I have wi-fi almost everywhere I go and I live in an area where 2G and 3G is on the cusp. This is extremely draining to batteries (I deal with none phone GSM equipment every day where battery life is key) and I know signal stregnth on the band you're using, constantly cylcing between band (and the variance in antenna power) is the single biggest thing to affect battery life asside from screen. It may not reflect this in stats, but trust me on this... If I lived and worked in a strong signal area, it would drop a few places down the list, extra call quality is nice as well as data.
For those of you living and working in London for example, but mostly out and away from Wi-fi, then consider leaving 3G on, and turning Wi-fi off.
Wi-fi scanning for networks constantly is another big drain.I have noticed this about Android, it allows you background apps to work leaner than the iPhone in power consumption when you have lots of widgets and synch etc. However the iPhone actually uses GSM to perform background tasks when the phone is off (shutting down wi-fi radio which reconnects as soon as you unlock the screen). This means that if you're out and away from a friendly hotspot all day, battery is less affected than an android.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, but hope you all have luck in finding your 'sweet spot' in usage / customisation.

About the battery consumption

Hello, I am a happy owner of the DHD.
It 'a great phone, but as you know, the only drawback is battery life.
I've tried several (few) ROM so far, and one with which I am slightly better is the RCMIX.
Now with this post does not go into details about what set, how to optimize (Sync off, energy saving displays, etc. ...) but I ask all your experience based on the ROM that you have installed:
1 - how to use the terminal?
2 - how long you last on a full charge and use it to do?
3 - What kind of ROM you use?
Thanks to all. I think it will be useful for someone like me, prefer a long battery life rather than three thousand graphicals functions

Battery life... it's been quite heavily documented on the DHD fora, but here we go:
1500mah is not enough for a huge screen, especially if you want to use the phone's capabilities. The versatility of this phone means you'll want to be browsing, doing emails, playing processor heavy games etc. Each to his own
So, limit the stuff you sync (mail/facebook, news, weather), or at least reduce the frequency. These things cause "partial wake locks", which stop the phone falling into a deep sleep, after which battery consumption is minimal. Watch out for wifi settings too. Search for BetterBatteryStats (by chamonix) on the Android Apps section of the xda forum for much more detail, and tips.
You should be able to get to the end of the day with a good ROM (eg Leedroid/Revolution - they are very popular, but the threads are immense, which makes looking for information difficult). These ROMs have over/underclocking built in (governors), and you can also undervolt (theoretically reduces consumption too).
Limit transitions, be reasonable with screen brightness etc.
And if all else fails, and you use the phone intensively and can't get to the end of the day, you could invest in a power pack (search Amazon for the New Trent 5000mah power pack, which costs less than €30)
my DHD lasts around 4 hrs continuous screen on, much longer screen off. IMO, LM based roms have the best battery life.
But you could always get cheap $3 batteries for the Desire HD off ebay.
Battery life on my DHD was very bad before i rooted it. I am now running RCMix3D Runny V1.3 and my battery has lasted over 30 hours with alot of use.

Your kernel? Radio? Ril?
with m0rbus called "normal usage" my phone lasts around 48h. using my rom and lordmod 7.2 cfs and my personal governor/undervolt settings.
edit: though this result is not really specific to MY miui rom. one should be able to achieve these results with that kernel and settings on every aosp rom.
edit2: with "my normal usage" it last around 24-30h. this includes gameing, emailing, testing settings for developing my rom, rebooting etc.
I've used alot of roms most of the sense ones seem to use about the same battery life better than stock (they get me through work stock needed charged at lunch) but for a week now I've been using miui I've been home about an hour played about 15 min of angry birds, watched a few min on youtube and surfed on xda for a bit and I just over 40% i think that's pretty good going.

Hi, I upgrade the ROM from the group Android Revolution, and my internet I put on 2G and work with WI-FI, GPS and SYNC ON. My battery life is working about 1,5 day.
Before I upgrade I use a Super-Wire patch from ARHD, I think this patch get this performace.
PS.: Sorry My English. I´m Brazilian.
I dunno guys.. I think all that is your subjective feeling and that ROM has no effect whatsoever on battery. Maybe small, but unnoticable. You never do things exactly the same or have battery charged exactly the same. In order to prove ROM has effect on battery usage you would have to make lab tests, i.e. make conditions the same. Moreover, if you look at the statistics of battery usage, it is clear that the most battery goes on SCREEN. And then GPS. Everything else is just a couple of %. All the talk of turning off wifi/3G to conserve power is simply not true. Just look at the statistics! Wifi takes like 2-3% of the power used, tops! The screen with it's 40%-70% is the problem, and there is no way to reduce that...

exactly....
You could always try to lower auto brightness levels by way of a flashable patch. I found that after doing this the screen was only using between 30-40% of the battery. Even so, it is the screen that always uses the majority of the battery. All the tips regarding decreasing battery by switching off syncing, wifi, widgets, etc are in my opinion a bit misleading. If you have a good radio and corresponding RIL then this will vastly reduce battery consumption whilst still being able to sync emails, widgets, etc with the wifi on. I recommend Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2 and it's matching HTC-RIL 2.2.0160HM. I'm currently on Orange in the UK and this combo works best for me across several different ROMs.

Yes and no.
If you are using the device, you can limit transitions, underclock the processor (via a custom ROM), flash a patch to modify the brightness as mentioned below. That definitely will help reduce consumption while in use.
However, and this is not collected in the Battery Usage option in Settings, Partial Wakelocks are the main contributor to battery consumption. When the phone is inactive, it should be asleep as much as possible - applications like Phone, Mail, Latitude, alarms etc wake it up for either scheduled or ad-hoc events. If you install BetterBatteryStats you will see which processes are keeping your phone awake & hence in a higher state of battery consumption.
Oh, do NOT buy cheap ebay batteries. They lie about their capacity. The only battery which offers more capacity than the OEM one, is Mugen (search in the Accessories forum), it's 1500mah. That extra power could make the difference in making it to the end of the day, but it costs about $45 I think.
You think this behaviour is normal?
Keep in mind that my DHD are this morning on the deck, and only hotspot is active (with whom I connect from the notebook) and sync only 2 emails to connect every 15 minutes each

If I charge the phone before going to sleep to 100% and leave it on, in the morning the battery it at like 60-70% which IMHO is really too much. I have sync set to between 1-2 hour intervals depending on service, but over night I set phone data to OFF so it shouldn't matter, should it? Then why such consumption? I understand it over the day when I use it, but at night the display is off, data is off so what could cause this? It can't be syncing since the data is off....

I'm interested in purchasing Galaxy note 3. I'm an iPhone user, but I've used Android until Nexus 4. I really want to switch back because I love customizing my home screen, but I'm really afraid at the same time. The reason is that with every single Android device I had, the battery life on 3G was horrendous. Even in standby in 3G, the battery drains super quickly, and when using, it's even worse of course. It was always hard to get it last through the day with only 3G and no WiFi connection. Signal I believe was okay too, not extremely good, but also not terrible.
Could you please (with no bias) let me know what the battery life with 3G is like on this device? Hopefully with Lollipop because that's the only reason I'm switching to Android. I don't like all the android versions before Lollipop.
Thanks so much!
Hello, i use a Note 3 (SM-N900) lollipop and im always on 3G. I get max 7 to 8 hours on 3G! But it depends how you really use the phone. Im not using power saving mode. Hope it helped you.

Hello, thanks for replying!
7-8 hours screen on time, or the phone just lasts 7-8 hours in total? If it's the latter, that's pretty short, similar to my past Android experiences.
You said depends on how I use it, but how do you use your Note 3? Are you a very heavy user?
I'm a moderate user. I need it to not run out of battery for at least 15 hours, with maybe about 5 hours screen on time. Again, on 3G. Is this possible? I don't play games. Just browsing the web, quite a few mobile data messaging, etc.
If you use the battery saving mode, it is better... but V5.0 drains battery a lot more than 4.4.
You say you don't like previous versions to 5.0... but I don't think you have tried them and they look almost the same (you can even install a launcher that makes it look exactly the same). Newer isn't always better -- at least not until a few updates lol.
Picking a phone with large battery is always good if you want longer hours.
But if you're an iP... I can't even it say it, it makes me sick lol... perhaps also look at the Sony phones. They have amazing battery life and a lot simpler in function like an ippp -- you know.

I can't answer about the 'always on 3G' because I use AutomateIt to switch between Data and Wifi. But you can get an extended battery that should give you much more time on - the zerolemon one is about 3X the mA/hr rating of the standard and there are others that simply replace the back on your phone so you can have a thicker battery.
But much can be done also by setting up the phone correctly - remove bloatware, check for settings that drain power, or even using something like AutomateIt to turn data off when the screen shuts off would help. Greenify is another app that can save a lot of power - it hibernates apps rather than let them keep running when you aren't using them.
Hello!
I understand where you are coming from. I have a Note 3 (Stock lollipop with root) and I am always on 3G because I travel quite often and barely bother to swtich to WiFi even when I am home. On the stock rom, I usually get about 4-hrs of screen time depending on what I am doing.
If I am downloading a lot of stuff and if I have too many apps that need updating, then the screen time drops considerably (Say 3 and a half hours). But with regular use (whatsapp, 4 email accounts all syncing, auto-updating via 3g turned on) I have never had any problems getting through the day.
Also, I have the Unified Daemon disabled. I have heard that this really chews through battery. It is used for updating weather and all, and it is not really needed. Also, on LTE however, battery drains much faster (even on standby). It has a standby life of maybe 15hrs.
If you really want great battery life, I agree with @cyberboob, they have outstanding battery life. My Xperia Z ultra lasts 3 days and then some under mild to moderate use and a week under light use. I have seen Xpera Z3 show similar resilience and they are fantastic phones to boot, not to mention waterproof. (Till you have used a waterproof phone while bathing, or near a (or in a) pool, you will never know what you are missing. Once you go water proof, you cannot simply go back!)
Hope this helps!
Thanks guys for your help! I will hold off for now and maybe look into Xperia Z3 or Z3 compact. these devices are more expensive because they are newer so i need to think about it more. again, thanks!

LOL - don't take this wrong, but you should probably stay with the Jobs program. Android works best for the Classical types. Apple is better for the Romantics. (read 'Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' for definitions) Long story short... you want your solutions given to you. Android users (most of them) are willing to do a bit of work to make things betterer.
It is sad for the human race that Apple keeps selling so many crippled devices... le sigh...

Well..ive had android from 2009 to 2014 and i have tons of experience flashing roms and fiddling around. But the thing is, i could never get though the day with 3G. I tried so many things i could think of but even on standby one of my phones as example drained 4 percent per 30 minutes. Probably some apps i installed but i needed all the apps. Greenify didnt help though. I tried Anker extended battery that has 400mah more with no thickness change (for T989) but still no difference. Didnt want to try crazy big batteries cause that would make the phone way too thick. Iphone has similar battery life when screen is ON But standby is much longer. I'm a light to moderate user at work so i can actually get through the day with this phone. But then again i really miss home screen customization and lollipop's flashy design looks so cool so i was looking into android again.

I get about 5-7h screen-on time on stock with 75% brightness, no root. Disabled most bloatware. GPS & sync off. (depending on the app, 9GAG drains more than Moon+ reader, for instance.) More if I use a lower brightness.
If I watch a film (720p mkv) it lasts about 6 hours.
In deep sleep it drains about 1% per 8 hours on 4G. (3G uses even less).
Mind you, I'm on 4.4.2, and an older version at that. (feb 2014). On AMOLED black uses no battery, and Lollipop is all white. And people wonder why Lollipop drains faster?
Here's screenies of my best use. (I was reading a book, black background with grey letters.) :

Well it seems like you have the experience to be able to use a Note. Sorry if I seemed harsh. Most Note 3 users seem fine on battery, although most also use WiFi as well as data.
Mostly it's a matter of setting up, tuning to your setup & letting it settle in. 5 hours SOT is probably a minimum but it's rare for me to get to end of day with less than 30% left.
