Australian and Non-US residents interested in Captivate and Vibrant? - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi All,
I'm not sure whether this has been posted before, but whilst browsing the web today, i came across the website where i got my i9000 SGS from and it now states they are selling the Captivate (AT&T version) and Vibrant (T-mobile) galaxy S's.
They ship worldwide too I think, so if anyone is interested: www.mobicity.com.au
and vibrant link: http://www.mobicity.com.au/samsung-vibrant-galaxy-s-16gb.html
and Captivate: http://www.mobicity.com.au/samsung-i9000-galaxy-s-nextg.html
Both have their respective US carrier branding though.
If i knew that they would sell these, I would've waited a couple more months to get the Captivate

WHY??
BOTH those models lack the front facing camera and the FM radio!

Mobicity sells everything (thats where I got my mobile), but it would be silly to buy phones which are more locked down

I imagine he wanted the Captivate because it works on Next G (Telstra) 850mhz frequency. A lot of people in Australia live in areas where Telstra has better coverage than Optus. The international version doesn't work with 3G on Telstra but works on all the other networks that use 900/2100Mhz 3G

most USA resident will prefer the Canada Vibrant over their own localized and crippled version of Captive/Vibrant

In Australia we don't have a crippled version at the moment.. Telstra are getting their own version anyway though:
http://www.samsung.com/au/smartphone/news/news_2010-06-24_article-itnews.html
So, with the GPS fix "unsure" (I believe it will be fixed honestly, but I don't have proof), it might be worth waiting for the Telstra version anyway.

Nice price on the Vibrant. I've bought a couple of phones from Mobicity.

Question about Unlocked Vodafone in U.S.

Hey everyone quick question. If a T-mobile customer in the U.S. were to order an unlocked magic branded with the Vodafone logo, could they still update the phone and such when the U.S. version hits in July. Say that U.S. T-mobile has sent out an update for their phone, could the person who has the Vodafone version update as well? I am debating about ordering an unlocked magic from Timtechs.com to use here in the U.S. and was wondering what were the possible drawbacks, besides 3G, that I may face.
For the same price (or less actually) as the vodaphone imports you can get one of the Google ION phones off of ebay if you're looking for something a little more interesting.
It supports the american 3G bands as well. I paid 589 for mine.
I have debated on ordering one, but am afraid of possibly receiving just a box lol. Actually the area of texas i live at doesn't have 3G yet, I am always running the E - EDGE network so it really doesn't bother me.

Got one for $400 practically new. Camera is decent but no AF and flash suck ball.
or get the one of the ones Rogers is releasing tomorrow in Canada..
Well, would it be the same version that the U.S. should be getting? if i could find a good canadian website that would ship to the U.S. I may be looking into this lol.
I just received a Vodaphone HTC Magic version and I got the phone to work nicely on AT&T with the APN info. But, 3G does not work. It only shows EDGE. Does anyone know how to get the 3G to work? Or, is there a ROM that I can flash to?
Let me know -

No since it has different 3G radio.
Rogers version will work since it has the same 3G bands as AT&T (850 and 1900).
Hey, wait....so since it has the same bands as AT&T...would that be the same as T-Mobile? Any one know a good canadian retailer who ships to the U.S.?

Is this Vibrant the same as Bell's?

Just wondering if this T Mobile Vibrant is the same as far as rooting and flashing goes as the version Bell will be launching soon in Canada?
Thanks
Bump, anyone know?
To my knowledge, no it isn't. It seems like it will be the same (or atleast look the same) as the euro galaxy S
biggest consideration is to check what frequencies your carrier uses ie is it GSM or CDMA, and for 3g Data what freqs
the tmobile is GSM and for 3G Tmo uses the AWS IV band, ie 1700/2100, and it has to be both of those if you were bringing a european phone here to the USA to use on tmobile - tmobile europe only uses 2100 for 3G, no 1700
as the 2100 is the download side i figured i could live without 3g upload speed but just before pulling the trigger on a european tmobile HTC Desire i found out that if the phone didn't have both sides, ie both 1700 for upload and 2100 for download, tmo's network would hold the phone to 2G or EDGE data speeds
so best bet is to first identify Bell's freqs - and you can do that on the web -
hope that helps some
Thanks, Bell's network is 850/1900. Same as AT&T but it doesn't look anything like the Captivate. Too many models of the same phone... too confusing...
I wouldn't be concerned with looks, in fact to me (i own a vibrant) i like the captivate case better - that report endgadget.com had on the two (vibrant/captivate) liked the way the captivate's case released in the back
the vibrant you have to pop the caseback with your fingernail - its secure but kind of a chintzy way to do it, especially when the capitvate has a nice pull and release mechanism
and the rear surface has some texture for a little better grip

My guess is the standard Galaxy S form factor is a little too much like the iPhone for AT&T's taste, so they wanted one that looks different. They don't want to piss off Apple, their goose that lays the golden eggs.
Sent from my Samsung Vibrant
I've got my crystal ball tuned up...
Bell gets a unit that looks exactly like the US T-Mobile Vibrant, otherwise they wouldn't have called it that. With the AWS/2100 replaced with 850/1900, and same as the T-Mo, no FFC. Bell gets the first Canadian unit, so they got that going on for "cool factor". I'm like 95.9% sure of this.
Based on the posters for the launch party, Telus gets an GSM Epic. That makes a lot of sense, especially since they're releasing the LCD Desire very shortly...the thicker, less sleek Epic would not be in the same category, and they wouldn't have went to the expense of getting the Desire if they were getting regular non-keyboard Galaxy S variant, and vice versa. I'm about 75% sure of this.
A Telus Epic would also make a great replacement for the aging Milestone, which is now out of production, with the GSM Milestone 2 probably still months off.
Rogers gets an unknown unit. I'd lean towards them getting the Captivate style, except for the whole AT&T exclusive lock on the unit, September release of the same unit that works on the same bands seems a little soon for AT&T to give up on the exclusivity costs.
But Rogers needs something to bring to the table that's different than Bell or Telus, so they may get a GSM Fascinate (complete with camera flash). The timing matches the Verizon release window as well, and both may be waiting on Samsung to get these into full production. They may also get the Euro model complete with FFC and big home button, Rogers has a history of supporting video calling. Whatever version they release, it will most likely ship with Froyo in the box.
To confuse the Rogers matter more, the rumor in the SIM unlocking circles is that the AT&T Captivate codes won't be available until October. If Rogers ships a Captivate version of it in September, with the same name, then AT&T will start releasing SIM codes to those that ask, because it's no longer exclusivity-locked.
I'm 33% on each of the Rogers options (Captivate, Fascinate, "pure" Galaxy S)
But it's all guesswork.
That's a pretty interesting theory you have there, and it makes sense too.
Has anyone gotten any of these Galaxy S models sim unlocked yet?

This is the only part of your comment that I think I will argue with. I think the bell version will look identical to the european one. Why do I think so? Two reasons my dear watson,
A.) www . youtube.com/watch?=8QSl8FyhjJE&feature=player_embedded
This video which I believe is correct. (and I think I saw another video that was just a hands on in a small room filled with guys in suits and the one reviewer.
B.) The Samsung Canada page for this device: www . samsung.com/ca/consumer/mobile/mobile-phones/all-phones/GT-I9000HKABMC/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&returnurl=
P.S. I've also heard of rumours of Rogers coming out with a galaxy S device, and Furthermore, supposedly the release date for the Bell Galaxy S will be August 6th

Galaxy S I9000 with ATT

I currently have a Captivate with ATT but would like the added features of the I9000 unlocked version, like front facing cam and the FM radio.
Will the I9000 work with the ATT network. I realize that there are a few differences in the bands that each use, but want the I9000 to work the same as the Captivate. 3g etc.
Anyone have anything on this?
thanks

I am currently using the i9000 on at&t with a new contract (still on my 30-day return policy for the contract). I still have some testing to do with it. One thing that is important to note is that the i9000 will only get 3g in areas with 1900mhz 3g, NOT the 850mhz 3g. Also, the i9000 will be a lot more expansive then the captivate.
edit: Gosh I hate typos.
oh...thanks..i live in the dallas area..ill check to see if we have 1900
if you are interested. Bell Mobility in Canada will release a version that looks pretty much like the EUR version
it is however still called the Vibrant
http://galaxys.bell.ca/
you will have to first unlock the handset before using it on another carrier

Unlocked I9000 850/2100 MHz

There are a couple of threads around at the moment that are eluding to a 850 MHz version of the Galaxy S. I'm currently using an original UK I9000 (900/2100 MHz) and am sick of the terrible service of 900 MHz carriers in Australia.
As such, when people start getting their hands on 850 MHz unlocked Galaxy S would they mind listing the following information.
- Reseller / Carrier (if they sell outright)
- Reseller / Carrier Shipping Destinations
- Price
- Firmware Version
- Locked / Unlocked
Semi-related, I contacted HTC Australia a couple of times when I was considering purchasing the Desire. HTC confirmed with me that all versions of the Desire are absolutely identical in terms of hardware. This confirmed the research I had performed that the HTC's/Nexus' radio chip has the ability to support both 850/900 MHz (not necessarily simultaneously). So it is definitely the case that flashing firmware onto your phone can convert a 900 MHz phone to a 850 MHz phone or vice versa. However, the firmware that needs to be flashed probably isn't directly flashable using standard android tools. You probably require physical access to the radio frequency chip to flash firmware onto the chip as well as corresponding firmware onto the phone. Where I'm going with all this is...
If we have any electronically inclined people on these forums, on top of the above information I would love to know if someone is willing to investigate whether it is possible to dump radio chip firmware from their 850 MHz device.
EDIT: I'll include the list of phones below.

Thanks. I did notice that thread however, it's actually why I started this one. I just figured it would be a good idea to have a central place for people to upload information. So we can compare between resellers and learn a bit about the devices from each reseller once people get them in their hands.
I'm looking forward to see results from the New Zealand model, and Bell.
I'll try to pick up one tomorrow from Bell and see if it works, and if we can unlock it.
@All Gamer: Are you going to have the phone unlocked? Even though you still in the Bell network.
I be checking in everyday for this.
I also noticed that the model number for this unit is actually i9000. Is the CA and NZ model names are i9000 with quad band? or different like the us version of i897 and t959. Just wondering if they were different then the Euro Version.

inside the phone, after you take out the battery it's a GT-i9000M
firmware was something J?5 (forgot the middle letter)
the Euro/Asia version is GT-i9000
they actually finally revealed the updated page, 2 weeks ago it didn't have the Tech Spec yet

that is the Asia version of the GT-i9000 (same as Euro) but!!! it has both the 850+900+1900 band, but missing the 2100 band (which i don't really care as in America we don't have much use for the 2100, 90% of the network in USA/Canada is 850+1900)
i'm on Fido...

No idea about the CA model, but the NZ model is the same as the european just with the different radio bands but no ideas about when it will be released, I emailed samsung NZ asking about it but no response yet. All phones sold in NZ are unlocked even apples's iphone 4 which has an exclusive contract with vodafone here is sold unlocked.
interestingly enough the Asia version also has different radio than the NZ version, the NZ has 2100 band, but the Asia one doesn't in its place it keeps most of the lower bands
according to Wikipedia, seems like the only country that uses 2100 is Brazil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSM_frequency_bands
why would cell phones sold in Europe/NZ ship with that band?
dunno...
anyways @ AllGamer, where are you in canada?
i get decent 3g coverage in the GTA...unless i'm in a basement and some houses...
also how's your gps?
works fine for me everywhere i've tested... haven't had any issues with locking
longest i've taken i think is like 30 seconds for a lock outdoors
and that was from a cold start after i flashed a new rom

no problem as well, that's why i don't know why so many people are complaining about the GPS and "lag"
coming from Windows Mobile, this "lag" is nothing, GPS takes average 5~15 sec to pick up depending on weather, my old phone it takes 5 min to 1 hour to pick up
and waiting for the Windows software to load was always like an eternity, that's why iphone got so famous, because windows mobiles devices have always been slow, and i'm sure it will continue to be slow even with the same CPU, cuz my old phone was a 625Mhz CPU, and still didn't cut it, i OCed it to 650Mhz and it was not much better, but definitely noticeable... anyways.... the SGS i9000 is a dream to use.
GTA as well, 3G is mostly fine in most areas, but sometimes when you are down in the subway (the stations with open tunnels) it can't pick up 3G only G or Edge, and some parking lots
it is more a concern about traveling as, drive around Ontario/Quebec quite a bit, having the 850 band is a safety & bonus.
so if the new one from Bell works, i'll sell the UK i9000 version (sill in stock firmware but rooted)
thanks for the info man.
is that a demo one, or you purchased it already?
the past 2 days i've been trying to buy one to study it in detail, with no luck, as the sales guys didn't want to sell me their "demo" units

AT&T Galaxy Tab

I am on AT&T for the main reason that I travel frequently to Europe and Asia (Japan, Hong Kong) and it's the carrier who happens to have devices with 3G bands compatible nearly worldwide (Even though I don't like so much the price AT&T is costing me...)
So... really considering now to switch to the Galaxy tab and say good bye to my good old TP2 (heavily overclocked so still with a bit of life in it !)
I have a few questions
1. there are rumors here and there saying the Tab for AT&T wont have the front facing camera (And then some other places where it's listed as a spec of the AT&T tab). Anybody can confirm / infirm this ? (Would be really pissed to pay such a price for the device if it has been castrated)
2. AT&T is the last US carrier not to have announced a launch date for the tab... (Maybe it's willing to be a bit nice to Apple and its recently commercialized iPad, or maybe it's just an old and slow company...). Pure speculation: is there a chance we'll be able to switch the tab bands from T-Mobile like some have successfully done with other Samsung phones from the galaxy family ?
3. Another pure speculation: has Samsung actually disabled the hardware for voice calls on the US versions ? I hope his will be solved by flashing another firmware. Otherwise I'll just end up buying an international version (Which will be much more expensive...)
You can get the unlocked north american version which should be out by next week. It will cost you an arm and a leg but WILL work with the 850/1900 at&t 3g bands. Here are a few sites that have it:

Thanks. Yes these bands are AT&T ones. Though waiting a few more weeks should allow to get it directly from AT&T at a lower price...
The good news is, if the websites are correct about the specs, the front facing camera is there (And I doubt Samsung will make a different Tab)
Seem to imply the voice call work to (negrielectronics) but it could be a mistake or a trick (works only through skype...) or just simple taht we are talking about an overseas model with the right 3G bands

What concerns me are the comments that suggest US carriers will somehow restrict their service to GT so only data will work (no voice). So that raises the question for those of us who get the unlocked version - how do we get our Gt on to ATT or others? I guess I'm asking which ATT phone is it close enough to that I can acuire and swap the SIM card?

Well, from what I hear is the 850/1900 band version will be an unlocked north amaerican version which can work with rogers (Canada) and at&t for the US by just adding your SIM card in. It is unknow weather the at&t network will identify the galaxy tab and change your plan accordingly if that is even how it will work with at&t. I beleive they WILL have a different plan for data for this device as T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon are following this. Also, the at&t version WILL be a different model in appreance and features as this unlocked one will not. Probablly because at&t WILL remove the front camera and who knows what else (thanks to the iphone). That is why the samsung site has not put the at&t version on their site yet. really do hope it will be treated as a PDA phone thru at&t's network (for the unlocked version)

That's funny as they told me last Friday that the warehouse in CA is expecting them on November 10th. Also, I work near the mobile city online store in NYC and stopped in there and they said this week they would have them. hmmm
UPDATE: Just sent a message to my contact @ Nergi. He said they just received the notice that this version of the tab will not be in till early 2011. You were right clubtech... Was hoping you were wrong.. lol That sucks!
Mmh all I have been reading so far sucks
Figured I would fire up this thread and bump it up as Bell is releasing the Galaxy Tab on November 12th. That will be our solution for the 850/1900 3G version I guess..? I sent a message to Nergi to see if they will have this version. I'll keep you posted.
I have my G-Tab now (Euro version with phone and data working great on AT&T in USA) Be glad to answer questions. General comment: I LOVE it! The form factor and wt are just right for me and it has all the features I miss on my iPad. Only criticism is that I find Android a bit less stable than IOS but that might be what Gingerbread or Honeycomb will address.

Are you getting good 3g coverage? I see your in PA... Close to me. I know the 1900 band does blanket this area to some degree but the 850 band is alot stronger. I think I may wait for a full 3g band with both 850/1900 bands. Seems like the bell version will be the answer to that. Glad to hear you love the device.
I read that the bell version can't make any phone calls fyi .

Yes the 3g coverage is fine in the Reading area (better than my iphone, not sure why) I made decision to go for the Eur version when it became apparent the ATT version would be limited to data (no phone) and I couldn't get an answer on whether the "North American" version (with 850 UMTS) would arrive with phone capability OK. I saw a map of ATT 1900 coverage and saw that it takes care of at least 75% of the US, including virtuall all of the East, so I'm comfortable with my decision.

Figured I would fire up this thread and bump it up as Bell is releasing the Galaxy Tab on November 12th. That will be our solution for the 850/1900 3G version I guess..? I sent a message to Nergi to see if they will have this version. I'll keep you posted.

Yes that's my hope. It's also probably a sign the AT&T one must be around the corner
I could not find out whether the Bell one would have call functions or not (That would be another great sign or opportunity)
