Rooting with Two Incredibles - Droid Incredible General

Here's my situation:
I have two Droid incredibles at the moment. One I have had for months, its stock everything, no rooting. The other is new, hasn't even been activated yet. I only have one phone line. What I would like to do is use the new phone for tinkering; rooting and custom roms.
So I have a question: How easy is it to dial *228 or whatever it is and switch back and forth between these two phones on my one line?
And would the new phone need to be activated while I am rooting it?

http://support.vzw.com/clc/
from here click activate a phone underneath "support for your phone" and it should be pretty much self explanatory.

If you have a wifi connection, you can just use that on the non-registered phone. I believe you should be able to run the unrevoked root tool without needing to activate the device, from there can just install roms thru recovery.
Switching the active phone is fairly simple, but I have no idea if there is some limit verizon puts on number of times in a time period the line can be switched.

Sorry I don't have the thread link but I read a post from someone that uses two phones. One doesn't have a camera that he/she can use at work and an Incredible for afterwards. On Verizon obviously and swithes back and forth like you want to. The post is somewhere in the KingKlick Kernal thread.Go back a day or two. Didn't mention having any issues with Verizon. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply. One other question, I want to try and keep these two phones two separate entities as much as possible. So much so that I don't want to use the same gmail registration for the second phone. I know that this would force me to re-pay in order to download the same apps. My question is, there shouldn't be any problems creating a new gmail account for this second phone to keep everything separate right?

Sprint Hero Troubleshooting

OK, I'm at work and as I'm the Android expert, I pretty much deal with Heros and Moments all day. 7 days a week. So I've compiled a short list of problems that I was wondering if you guys might be able to help me out with. I kinda feel bad constantly having to hard reset my customers Heros, even though everything is backed up to google. So, since you guys have delved into the OS and programming, perhaps you have some fixes aside from hard reset (And that won't void the warranty, preferably) for these problems.
1. Picture mail. Customer just gets a download button. When they touch it, either they get downloading........ or download unsuccessful. After suspending/restoring account, deprogramminga nd reprogramming the phone, and switching the phone off the account and back on, I can get about 50% of their picmail to go through, still have to hard reset. Any thoughts on causes of this? Or a fix?
2. Youtube. Using either the browser or the youtube application, the video will not play. Will occasionally play after 4 or 5 tries, but with no consistency. Doesn't seem to happen on every phone. Hard reset does not fix this. It's listed in our known issues, with no fix. I would appreciate any of your advice. I already give my customer the workaround to use a diff browser and d/l in mp4 format, i'd like to know if I can be more help.
3. When attempting to sign into google or access Market, error "A reliable data connection could not be established. Your SIM card may not be provisioned for data. This may be a temporary problem." Etc. Once again, I do all troubleshooting on our side, customer can browse internet and use data based apps, just not contact googles servers. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
That is pretty much it. The only problem I actually cannot fix is the Youtube, other than that a hard reset will take care of it but your average sprint customer has never done a backup and has forgotten the gmail they created when they activated the phone. Thanks in advance for help and if anyone needs any help on my side or info hit me up.
Tell Sprint to get off their ass and roll out the 2.1 update. That fixes every issue you listed as well as others.
Be thankful that some very malicious exploits are still being kept hush hush. Your bosses promised fixes in November when they were shown how to crash any Sprint Android device to the point where a hard reset and a trip to the store is needed to fix it.
Fixes were promised "soon" back in November. It's almost March and I'm about to spill my guts and make things much worse.
I'll help anyone who is honest. Sprint and HTC have spent a ****load of resources on other projects instead of fixing a buggy POS system they took my 500 bucks for. That's not honest.

+1 what he said
Both posts don't actually address his questions, rather your gripes with Sprint and or HTC. Please stay on topic and help if you can.
Gee, that was entirely unhelpful. I am actually trying to help people. I come in on all my off days because no one else here is as comfortable with Android as I am. I am also the top Aircard guy because while most of these guys can fix your Blackberry, they don't know jack about Windows or Mac. So I spend the daylight hours every day trying to help people. I figured since you guys have gotten further into the OS than I ahve you might be able to offer some assistance to your fellow Hero users. Instead, I get an extremely rude message essentially spitting in my face and telling me to piss off because of the company I work for. I honestly had much higher expectations. I've been reading these forums for months and have come to have a high degree of respect for all of you, which is why I decided to start posting. That's really dissapointing. And, for the record, Sprint doesn't write Operating Systems. They just tell the manufacturer what they want (Sprint Nav, Nascar, etc.) and what they wont allow (phone as modem, bluetooth file transfer) and then get the updates whenever they make one. You guys are eagerly awaiting a Sprint 2.1? So is Sprint. I promise you.
And by the way, I realize I'm apparently a horrible person for working to feed my family and all, but I'm an Industrial Electrician, Journeyman. Also A control specialist, fiber optic terminator, and IT tech. The economy crashed, I got laid off from the electrical union cause we had no work, sat on the books for 6 months, and when the union couldnt find me work I came here. Sprint was impressed with my technical abilities (and the fact that someone with my experience/education would be willing to do tech support) and gave me a job. Don't think I'm some evil corporate asshole whos trying to get over on you, cause I'm not. If you don't want to offer your assistance that I think I very respectfully asked for, ok. You aren't hurting me, my Hero works just fine. You're just hurting every other Hero user that calls in needing help.
Oh, and since I can't play with my phone at work (new policy, it bloody sucks, I used to sit here and flash roms and stuff all day from this site) I am just reading the forums and trying to help out. This thread is aptly named for it, so if anyone needs any tech help (as far as not getting sms, mms, calls not coming through, internet down, etc) hit me up in here I'm already giving out tech advice in the picture mail thread. Lol.
How about the texts out of order problem?
I've noticed on mine, it's only when I get texts from other sprint users and it's not every time. Like just now, I sent a text to a friend with sprint, my phone says I sent it at 5:40pm, she replied 2 minutes later, but the time stamp on her text says 5:39pm. I have yet to have this issue with people on other carriers, only people that also use sprint.
Yeah, thats a weird issue. Mine does the same thing. I havent found a fix yet. When using the normal messaging app this causes new txt messages to go to the top of the thread, which is a pain in the ass if you have several hundred txts. Using Handcent keeps that from happening, but the time still comes in wrong. I'm gonna check this out today and see if I can dig something up.

Not true. His questions were answered in the first sentence of my original reply.
All these issues are a direct result of the process that was used to force Android to work with hardware and a system it was not designed for. They are all fixed in later versions of the operating system.
To the OP - I don't hold you responsible for anything Sprint does. But since you identified yourself as someone who does tech support for them, I simply told you the same thing I tell any Sprint employee. Fix your **** and soon. Pass that along please.
Too bad Sprint network and software engineers don't care about the issues enough to seek feedback like you have done. If they did, I would have told them the same thing.

Is the customer using the stock messaging app or Handcent? I notice that if I click the "download" button on the pop-up notification then I never get the picture mail. Close the pop-up notification and open the SMS app of your choice (stock, handcent or other) and the picture mail should be there.
I would think that a hard reset fixes it because it uninstalls the custom messaging app that the customer has installed that is hijacking the download.

I've noticed that many movies don't play on the browser because Youtube tries to launch "Youtube Mobile" and it blocks a lot of videos that would otherwise play in the Youtube app.
It may be an issue with the data connection. Does your store have a WiFi hotspot? If so, try disabling the Sprint Data connection and enable (and associate) the WiFi... then see if it views ok. If so, you may need to reprovision the Vision account or reset the Vision credentials.

I suspect the customer has loaded a custom ROM and is not telling you... but before they came into the store, they restored from nand. There is a known issue with some custom ROMs that will put bad data in your Google account (held on Google's servers). Try creating a new gmail account, do a hard reset, configure the new gmail account as the phone's primary Google account, and see if the market runs. If so... explain to the customer that they have (i believe permanently) screwed up their Google account and they should create a new one. They can still use their old gmail account for mail as a secondary account but as far as Market and all the other Google apps on the phone, they should use the new one. Also advise them to check with the ROM manufacturer before they load custom ROMs.
For example, MoDaCo doesn't have this problem but some of the earlier (and possibly the current) Fresh ROMs caused this problem.

Is there really such a serious exploit? Maybe its time Engadget and the other big guys in the tech press know about it and its specifics. Could be one hell of a bargaining chip to force an early release of 2.1

This doesn't seem to be totally accurate since in my case I've been using Fresh roms since the first release and have never had any market related issues. To me this would imply there's a bit more going with that. Just thought that this should be noted.

Again??? this is your first post in this thread... and if you have to start out by saying that you're not trying to be a jerk, then you probably are. It's kinda like saying "all due respect" when you have no intention of showing respect.
If you search this forum you'll find the evidence to my statements. I've been using MoDaCo's ROM and have seen numerous people that switched from Fresh and can't get the the market to work. I'm not any way devaluing the Fresh ROM or their work. I'm simply saying that there was a setting in a file (I can't remember what file exactly - you'd have to search that answer out yourself) that messed up the market for a bunch of people. This may have been an isolated issue to one version of Fresh (hence when I said "some"). If you weren't affected then you're a lucky one, but that doesn't mean that other people aren't affected. Also, my thread was informational to show that this guy's customers may have loaded a custom ROM... The ROM could have been from Fresh or anybody else (or even customized by his customers themselves).

I have had this issue with two Heros with and without third party msg apps. Also the first thing I do in setting up my msg apps is to disable the popup notificacion (just bugs me) and I have had the same thing happen. In fact I've had my msg app (whether it be stock, CHOMP, or Handcent) open and waiting for test mms msgs I sent to myself and still experienced the same problem. Again, just thought it should be noted.

Lol. Thought I edited the post. To early in the morning I guess. My point was simply that what you stated isnt necessarily true in all cases, specifically mine. And so to me this would be evidence the rom is not the issue and that there may be more to it. Thats all I was saying. Didnt mean to offend.
The only time i have heard that a Fresh ROM messed up the market was Fresh 2.1. Its just an AOSP rom and it was known for messing up the market but a fix was posted.
I just lost a lot of respect for you gbhil. What are you going to do next? Threaten the class president to try and get Obama to sign a bill?
LOL. Yeah, I'm really just gonna call up the CEO and the development department...everyone in tech support has their number....
Oh, and in response to the latest posts.....Aside from the youtube issue, a hard reset takes care of all the issue I listed. I thought I mentioned that. So that rules out the phone being permanently screwed up by bad roms. Plus, I assure you, the people that call in with these issues don't even know how to get into the phones settings, and it takes them about 10 minutes to type their google username and password. And the "cannot establish a reliable data connection" issue with google and android market isnt just the market. It happens when they try to sign into Google, sometimes when they just bought the phone and are doing it during the activation process. It also happens on the Samsung moment, so I think its safe to say it isn't a rom flashing issue. And the picmail happened on my hero before I even rooted it, and occurs on the stock app and handcent. When they call in with it happenning on stock messaging app, I have them download handcent as part of troubleshooting. As I said, after all troubleshooting is done, they maybe get half their MMS.

Do you actually work for Sprint? or are you reselling their services?
Sprint recommends that you do not even TRY to use data until 4 hours after activating the phone. It takes some time for the account to properly provision through all their systems and if you attempt to use data before the account has provisioned completely then it screws up the vision profile to the point where you MUST call Sprint and have them fix it (i.e. nothing you can do to fix it).
I ask if you work for Sprint because if you do, you'd know that and wouldn't have people trying to connect to Google right away.
Now, I know that people are going to say that this is part of the setup process for the Hero (enter your account information), and that they did it out of the box with no problem, and the Sprint reps set the phone up for them in the store, and Best Buy will set the phone up for you and they don't have problems, and a whole bunch of "it didn't cause problems for me"... but that doesn't change the fact that Sprint says quite clearly "do not try to use the vision data until 4 hours after activating the account".
So... if you're having data problems, and you don't want to use my suggestion from before to reset the Vision Profile, then call Sprint and have them do their magic little fix.

[Q] About taking in a phone to get contacts synced from sprint?

Ok so i have a question, i have an older sister up in a different state and my dad bought her a brand new epic for xmas. Its not activated yet til she gets it obviously so i was wondering:
1. if i sent it to her rooted so i can give her mobile ap and custom kernal all that fun stuff, will sprint know anything if they are just transfering contacts from her old sanyo pink regular phone?
2. Can it be rooted before activation?
Would Greatly appreciate someones insights,
Thanks

only thing about rooting her device and putting all the cool stuff on it is... she's going to have to do all the updates manually. do you trust your sister to do that? if so, go crazy. i sent my brother a pre rooted EVO and he's still running 2.29something. doubt he'll ever make it because he doesn't have the patience to sit on aim with me while i walk him through it and he's dumb as a brick (too dumb to brick it, even)
butttt i work at a sprint store and i'd ask her about her mod and which one it was.. i wouldn't report her or anything.. in fact, there is no protocol to do so. they just don't support the devices - eg. you wont get her screen replaced if bad software killed it under warranty if they can find evidence of tampering with the software
lol but i would support it. then again, im here

U mean the 2.2 update? i dont think she will care that much honestly.
i know i will tell her how to flash stock stuff and ill do it for her or tell her bf to do the stock flash.
so if she is just getting contacts transfered they shouldnt give her any trouble if its rooted, i mean it will look stock. just have mobile ap on it.

There is numerous ones out there just Google transferring phonebook software. I can't remember what I used to have when I worked for T-Mobile something along the lines of Data Pilot I think but don't quote me. Not sure about the rooting question though. I've had the opportunity to root before activating. If you do root before you activate and it does work let me know for future reference please and thank you.
I found it easier to manage my contacts via Google Contacts instead of trying to clean up transferred data from my 4 year old flip phone.
What I did in Google Contacts:
Created a new group labeled "Android"
Cleaned up, added, removed contacts (Initial cleanup took 2 hours, subsequent cleanup is now only 1 minute.)
Assigned the "Android" group to those I wanted in my contact list in the phone.
What I did in the phone itself:
Went into the contact preferences and selected "only show contacts with #s"
Deselected all of the groups from Google Contacts and only selected "Android" to sync
Then I linked Facebook to my phone to allow the auto-sync (for contact photos)
Finally I manually attached FB accounts to contacts that didn't auto-sync
When I want to add a new number, I add it to my Google account from the phone's contact manager, then later just add the "Android" group via the Google Contacts website.
This was the easiest method I found to keep my contact list clutter free, while still utilizing Google Contacts to it's full potential.

[Q] How to remove the phone bits from my tab?

As I have been flashing ROMs I've noticed many come with the Phone.apk. My Tab is a tablet, and not a phone so I want to remove it all. But when I tried to through adb it renders my data service useless. So would someone please tell me exactly how this is done?
Strange that you want to delete it
You could take a custom launcher and hide it from the drawer.

As far as I know the only way to fully remove the dialer functionality would be to cook your own rom without it. The only other thing I can think of is maybe taking the phone.apk from a standard tmo build and using that (I am fairly sure the default build still has a phone.apk as to my knowledge it is needed for radio services to function). Having said that I use mine as a phone so not gonna mess around to test it myself and my apologies if it doesn't/wont work. As a side note phone.apk is less then 4mb not sure why it would be a huge concern.

My contacts app has the dialer in it. And on some ROMs I get a voicemail notification. I suppose I could find a contacts apk without it. But if I'm going through all that I might as well get rid of the whole thing. I just don't see the reason behind needing to use a tablet as a phone, you know?

The "simple" solution would be to go back to your stock ROM, but that's likely not really an acceptable solution as the performance of the stock ROMs tends to be pretty poor in comparison to the later development builds.
So, you are likely to be left with removing or replacing certain components from your desired ROM with the stock TMo variants (as has been previously mentioned) on a trial and error basis to determine what works and what does not. It's doubtful that you'll find anyone who can tell you *exactly* what you want to do, because it seems that most US Tabs users are looking to re-enable the phone functionality that was artificially crippled by the US carriers.
I seldom use my Tabs phone functionality, but I have used it (makes a great speakerphone for conference calls!), and I would always rather have more functionality than less.

[Q] Droid X Ringer issue

Hi all...
I'm turning to XDA for help as you guys seem to know everything
I have an unrooted Droid X that I have modified with Desktop visualizer, smooth calendar, a few other apps. At some point during the mods, it stopped ringing when called. Now sound works... and the phone announces the network then vibrates when called, so it says "Verizon Wireless" and then vibrates... but I can't get the ringer to come back.
I've removed everything I added. I have rebooted the phone multiple times... still no ringer.
Any thoughts on what else to try?
Monty
in my experience its better to root and rom ur device, instead of using apps. just my opinion. u might havt to do a full sys restore.
Sent from my DROIDX using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
While true, if I damage the phone while rooting, I'm screwed and have to buy a new phone. Trying to avoid rooting. Just want the phone back to normal.
Ok, have reloaded to factory. Now will do updates and see what one causes the problem. Will notify here.
I wouldn't actually consider it modding if you installed some apps. But as stated before, it would be a good idea to do a system restore

Do a system restore. On a side note using Z4 root I'd say there is almost a 0% chance on any damage. Believe me when I say this it is nearly impossible to brick a device. Nearly all the threads on here about people complaining about a bricked device are solved easily and the devices aren't really bricked.
Ok, have reloaded everything but Smooth Calendar and I'm still good. I want to load it but am worried it will take me right back where I was... is there another decent app that widgets the calendar in a see-thru mode that anyone is using on their Droid X?

I've never had any problems at all with Smooth Calendar. Maybe your restore fixed your problem.

I use CalWidget. Its minimalistic and simple, has a transparent background if wanted, and you can customize the colors, how it syncs, etc. Simple and fairly versatile.

Thanks all for the advice.
I did reinstall smooth calendar and all seems well. Strange that it acted up before... can't really blame any one app though.
As towards calling it 'modding'... of course you can't, but my phone still looks better than straight factory ones...
And I might root it, I am still a little hesitant though, once I get more time maybe I can look into it and then give it a shot.
Thanks again!

and the phone announces the network then vibrates when called, so it says "Verizon Wireless" and then vibrates... but I can't get the ringer to come back.

[Q] T-mobile MyTouch 4g vs. HTC: Glacier

Excuse me for my ignorance, ahead of time. I am new to an android phone. I have spent all morning searching and reading on the forum. I am a Unix geek, though, so not completely unfamiliar with some of these concepts. I have a few newbie questions that I need answered:
1. Is the T-Moble version of the MyTouch 4G the same as referenced as the HTC: Glacier? (I mean i noticed an HTC label on the back of the phone, just want to make sure).
2. I am looking for a new ROM for my son's phone. I want to be able to totally disable the GPS and camera. Is there one that allows this?
3. In simple terms, what is "rooting"? Is it just installing a new OS? I see that the steps always include "partitioning" the phone, but i don't see instructions or options for this anywhere.
4. I also see that you can use a tool to create a backup so that you can undo changes or revert a prior version. What tool is best for this?
5. I am a mac user, are there explicit instructions somewhere on these basic concepts of my first "root"?
I know these are very simplistic questions but I have to start somewhere to get the concepts.

Well you should probably research more before rooting BUT
1) Glacier is the same as the mytouch 4g
2) that's harder to do but you could uninstall the camera app and native GPS app.
3) Rooting turns off a checkpoint when updating the recovery which allows you to flash a custom recovery image allowing you to install custom roms
4) it's not an app its built into clockwork mod recovery (replacement recovery image)
5) you can root from your phone the os of your computer doesn't really come into play until you want to start deving

OK, i see rooting is gaining access to the base / so that the major phone binaries can be replaced... i see i need 3 things: terminal, asto, and visionary... no adb prompt needed???....
so, visionary 11 or visionary 14, but not 12 or 13???
I just really want to make sure I don't end up with a "brick"!
... right?.....
still waiting on some answers....
well, it is a matter of "faith" with regards to the camera and gps.. my son thinks his friends have hacked his phone and can turn on his camera and gps and determine where he is and see what is going on around him...... i am not one to say they did or didn't for your kids are always right....
so, he won't turn his phone on unless HE wants to use it.... i wanted to re-root his phone with a ROM that saved the battery and gave him the ability to basically change gps dev and camera dev to readonly... so that any app that tries to use them will be denied... unless he turns it on, purposely....
i do this on my mac with the camera for webex takes control of it, if it can, and you have not control over who can see you sitting at your computer.... i just disable it... and only turn it on when i want to skype with my kids..
plus, i think it is cool... i am delving into this for this old lady just wants to learn, too!...
Ok well I'm not too sure on the changing permissions for cam and Gps but saying his friends 'hacked' his phone is preposterous lol a factory reset would eliminate any chance of having a malicious app such as that. As for rooting I used r11. Basically temproot via visionary move gfree files to data/local and then open terminal type
CD data/local
Chmod 777 gfree
./gfree -f
And reboot
Run visionary again and hit permroot

yea, let's just say i he is having "paranoid" issues at the moment... i thought, if i went through the terminal and rooting and making him actually do it, it might spark an interest for him to take control, instead of assume with no facts.....
if a person is "paranoid".. give them the tools to know better... ...

Hah then I'd have him do those instructions followed by rebooting into recovery so he can wipe away everything to give him peace of mind

I doubt that there is an app for his friends to do that..Unless they mean the Qik app installed which is for video chat or google latitude, which lets you locate others.
I don't mean to butt in but it's highly unlikely that his friends are remotely activating the camera/gps. Just do a factory reset if theres a bad app that they could be using. And like the other person said he could just be signed into apps included on the phone that track and broadcast your location online (he could have just skipped through some setup stuff or something and pressed allow), or left a video chat app running and had some type of auto-answer on. So just do a factory reset.
If your whole reason to root is to disable those things just don't bother, unless your son is in to that and wants to try out different roms, overclocking, etc.
And yeah Glacier is HTC's "codename" for the myTouch 4G.
Theres a app in the market that you can use to block those functions. You will just have to look for it

If a person is paranoid... it doesn't mean that they aren't after him
But really, I think that if his friends manage to get his phone for a few minutes (some distraction/diversion action, perhaps involving a voluptuous blonde hottie ), then they may install some applications on his phone that will allow them to remotely trigger the GPS, get his location, initiate a call and listen/spy on him, erase his data, lock his phone etc. etc.
Big brother, Big friends, whatever. Anyway one has to get used to CCTVs everywhere, biometric tracking by the CIA and KGB, friends spying on you through FaceBook (and Android phones, apparently) and god looking to everything one does, says and thinks... Man, am I being paranoid or they really are after me???
Hey guys, I just got the MyTouch4G. I've been on the Cliq for quite a while and have rooted and installed custom ROMs. I've tried ROOTing this but only have succeeded in temp ROOT. I just want to unistall crap apps that I don't use and just suck battery. Also, I'm having difficulty installing CWM recovery to use with ROM manager. I'm looking for a one app solution for ROOT if possible. I tried Z4Root, and another ABD type app neither seem to do the permenant ROOT, only temp.
There is nothing like what you're looking for.
Go to Development section, read the rooting thread.
