Carbon Fiber Skins for your Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant - Canceled - See OP! - Vibrant General

Dear Carbon Fiber Skins Vibrant Customers,
I have some bad news for you tonight. I've stayed up quite late several nights over the past week, doing and redoing the vibrant battery covers. While the 3M 94 di-noc primer does indeed help, it still doesn't seem to be strong enough to keep the vinyl stuck to the harsh corners of the battery cover. I've tried several different ways of applying the material; sometimes its come out well and the corners didn't ripple (yet), and other times they've rippled within 2 days. It doesn't seem to be heat related, but more-or-less time related. Personally, I'm tired of trying and don't really want to sink anymore time than I already have. You should have all gotten EVOs!
I will send the 4 that I currently have done back to you the way they are, however, I can't guarantee that the corners will stay down. I don't feel as if this is a quality or lasting product (like my evo covers), therefore, I'll send the covers back to you and issue a full-refund, unless you specify otherwise.
My Evo's skin is still doing perfectly fine 3.5 months later; I've picked at the edges to see if they were beginning to come up, but no sign of that thus-far. The exact same story goes with all of my local friend's evo battery covers that I've done for them. The only probable reason I can think of as to why the corners ripple up on the vibrant battery covers, is because they're to small and harsh to allow enough bonding between the vinyl and cover.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask in this thread and I'll do my best to reply. I'm very busy this week and will be traveling for business over the weekend. I'll mail the covers back tomorrow; please email me when you receive them and I'll issue your refund via paypal.
Regards,
-Sterling

Is there any practical use to this?

Op,
We do have an accessory section, best to move this thread there.
Great product. Expensive for what it is. Can get the material from a wrap shop for under $1, or free if they have some scraps. A shop would probably install for $5.

Wrap shop?

Double post.

Not everyone has the time nor the skill to do this. You are paying for someone to go buy & stock the material, custom cut the pattern, then meticulously install it to the cover. You are paying for a handcrafted service, and I think $25 is a fair price.
If you can find a shop that can do this for less, let us know. Otherwise thanks for stopping by.

if you're using real carbon fiber, that isn't a bad price but if it is real, CF blocks radio signal
i work with CF - CF will conduct electricity, and block radio signal - has some other interesting properties in addition to it's strength, but just so folks are aware
if you're curious of the effect, cover the back of your phone with aluminum foil to see the effect - and watch the radio signal strength drop, and also see what happens to the GPS signals as well
if it's faux CF, just ignore the above

The material is 3m Di-NOC, a vinyl wrap, it's not real cf. It's available at most custom car mod, vinyl wrap shops. It takes under 5 minutes to apply.
If you think it's a fair price buy it. Just know the materials cost less than $1, time required is sub 5mins and with some research you can source materials and labor locally.

OP, can you provide more pictures of the corners including close-ups?
I'm not 100% satisfied on my DIY and am wondering if I send you my current battery cover with my own current 3M Di-NOC on it you can take it off at no extra charge.

mods - pls delete

Wow. You vibrant users got some *****y ones over here in this forum. Out almost 25 pages on the evo thread - nothing like this has been posted.
If you think you can get this done for $5 bucks, go do it, take pics and post it. I highly doubt anyone, anywhere is going to wrap the battery cover, and hand cut it out to perfection for you.
You're right, the vinyl doesn't cost a whole lot (when you buy it in larger sheets), but besides there, there is a new xacto blade, the return shipping, gas to the post office to ship it back + time, and about an hour to apply it to the cover. If you add that all up, it's less than mem-wage. But hey, since I'm making such great money off this, you can take it over and do it.

Thanks. At least you understand the costs related with business. I'm really doing this more for the community, because I'm definitely making less than mem wage doing this.

Yes, I'll post more corner-focused pics later today. The botom two corners are completely smooth - the upper two corners only have one very small ripple in it, which I've smoothed out. The upper corners are about twice as curved as the bottom.
I can remove it. It's not hard. You can even do it if you'd like. Just heat it up with the hair dryer and peel off.
It's now $20. Which I think is a pretty fair price for something that's hand made.

Thanks for sharing your work OP, it looks great good job.
I think it's a good price, i might go for it.

First things first, as I said in my first post, "great product." Your workmanship neat and I'm sure there is demand for it. I just commented on the price.
I don't need to post a vid of it being done in 5mins, a simple search on you tube returns many application examples. As for your suggestions that I "take it over," even with the margins I think you have, it's worth my time. Just an observation, if it was not worth your time you would not be self promoting your product nor would you have created a website for the same.
I did not want to start an argument, nor insult your skill level or integrity. I think its honorable that you reduced your price and I hope you do well with it.

Hrshycro Good job, do you offer any more colors or styles? Also this is a Forum so you will have lots of people who will tell you how you can do it for better, just best keep on scrollin while they are trollin.

Besides the hating stuff from Sykes, this thread does belong in the Accessories section and I believe you'll get more exposure there too as there are ppl aplenty there looking for cases and such, though this one in particular does not offer any protection it also does not add bulk.
Can you PM me the address to send the battery cover to?

Thanks. I did see that you posted it from your phone, which sometimes leads to more cuticle speaking. While there are lots of videos on youtube of stuff being covered in 5 minuets, not very many of them are real-time. Most are time lapsed or cut together. Also, it's usually bigger items, like cars, tables, ect., which require a lot less time to perfect because they have bigger edges and sharper corners. At least from the ones I've seen. It actually takes me about an hour to do one (30ish for an evo because they don't have any corners at all). This is by no way a money making job for me. I do other work for real money. It's more of a hobby: if people want to pay me todo it, great, if not, I have a DIY for them.

Yeah, right it does. I had a long day yesterday and forgot about posting it in there. It does add some protection from scratches when dropped, and feel/grip (feels like carbon fiber). While it's no where close to being an invishield, it's going to have some of the same benefits, and look cool, too.
Just use the paypal link on carbonfiberskins.tk. I'll send you my address thereafter.
Is anybody interested in another color? If so, let me know.

Great! I'll probably end up ordering white and more black.
I can't believe nobody wants some brown-zune lovin' color on their phone

Hrshycro's thread for the EVO looked amazing so I think I was the first one to get at him to do this on my spare back cover.
btw, I'm not good at DIY wrapping, so I definitely didn't mind the cost to have him provide his service and ship finished product back out to me for one flat rate. I guess for me $20/30 for a phone accessory is normal and isn't a big dent to my wallet. For a one of a kind look like this I'll definitely buy this instead of a generic incase/casemate.
Thanks for the great job though Hrshycro. Waiting to recieve it and take actual pics of it on the Vibrant!

Cracked S2 screen from a short drop. Depressed.

A really stupid story, and I am sure not that uncommon either. Was in the college cubicle this morning (adult college, English ex-pat learning Finnish) and some bright spark had set the automatic lights at something like 2-3 minutes. Cue darkness and yours truly having the bright idea (no joke intended) of grabbing my phone and using my bright-as-the-sun SAMOLED+ screen to regain composure in pitch darkness and reactivate the lights.
I accidentally dropped the phone from knee height (please, imagination not necessary) onto the tiled floor leaving me with a dim partial screen lightup and many many problems, especially as I use my phone heavily to help with my language course. AAAAAAGGG.
Well, this is definitely going to be a lesson to anyone who doesn't think it will happen to them (one more educated user down, many to go) and haven't invested in a bumper case or at least a silicone cover. The only recourse I am aware of is the screens from aliexpress.com which both cost approximately a 1/4 of what the phone is worth....unless anybody has any better sources they can share?
Before I debase myself further, I have to mention that I am a 35-yr old who moved country with his family and is currently on a government-sponsored language integration course, and is therefore on the equivalent of unemployment-level finances until at least August 2012 with books to buy and all that depressing stuff. My phone is my only real luxury at the moment (cry cry, etc) and has become a lifeline helping me improve my language skills to become employable again in a very skill-oriented country. In that respect it is more than worth its (albeit svelte) weight in gold to me.
Despite me not being an existing contributor here as such, not having accrued reputation and therefore not being seen as an investment, I plan to provide a screen replacement tutorial (laced with comments like "BUY A BUMPER CASE!") when I can afford to buy a new screen. In that respect, I have set up a "Donate To Me" button to the left in my profile chit:
<<<<<<<<<<
....which I hope people would be goodly enough to use anonymously to help ease my transition through my S2 limbo. Please understand that this is not invitation to deride me for my stupidity in not buying a case yet (practical lesson learnt already, believe me) or to comment on the validity of my request in what is to me a very troubling time.
I'll be ordering the new screen at the end of the week. This is the first picture of the intended tutorial:

Or in Finnish, "jos sä et voi olla antelias, ole silti kiltti".
In addition, if you live in Satakunta and need guitars/basses set up and/or repaired then I can do this for a very reasonable fee. I will also have plenty of woodland mushrooms for sale. I make a mean curry. I know far too much about Matsumoku-era Japanese Aria guitars. I can still remember most of my Sinclair Spectrum machine code. I helped to prove from geotechnical data that there is a continuous layer of impermeable clay below the Stratford Olympic Village site preventing migration of contaminants buried beneath the multi-million pound development thereon from leaching into sensitive waterways. I can calculate weight bearing and design roof trusses for lots and lots of snow. I ran 10km in a very slow 59m 52s once. I came second in an egg and spoon race when I was four. I invented one of the first network instant messaging systems in 1991 using BBC BASIC and various network hacks. I then implemented it in Winword. I know far too much about brasses. I have three points on my driving licence that I should have had removed seven years ago. I can't ice skate. If any of these skills or lack of are capitalisable to you, drop me a PM....!! Callers are standing by.
Gutted!!!
Do you not use some sort of case?
I use a great rubber one that in VERY close to the phone so doesn't even look like i use one!
Looks good and would save my phone if i ever dropped it
Ouch...
Many sympathies. And good luck learning Finnish, it's horribly tough. I gave up and learnerd Swedish instead from my Finnish ex - helluva lot easier.
@OneZeoN - I've never actually used a case before, and it is only recently (well, July 2010) when I bought my first large format screen phone. Before then They were semi-bricks like my Nokia 5800 Xpress Music which you'd need to stab with an icepick to damage. My original Galaxy S never failed either. I've always been very careful (or lucky).
I guess I fell for the svelte design and feather weight of the S2. It's a shame that form is taking more precedence over function in some kind of counter-productive race on thinnest-flattest-lightest-shiniest, as the walls of material physics are being hit hard. Shock-absorbancy doesn't marry well with thin and stiff as my S2 proves.
I'm going over whether to run a silicone skin or a proper bumper case. Given that every Euro counts at the moment (upcoming school books and my wife needs a nurse uniform "for school", woof) I'm a little worried that silicone might not provide the protection and assurance an expensive phone like an S2 really needs. As you say, more than likely better than no protection!
@B3311 - Finnish is unfeasibly hard. That said, it is very logical like German is. You can read Finnish straight from the page and even if you don't know the words or the sense of what you are reading, everything can be vocalised. The grammar is the problem, cramming that system into your head and then realising you haven't had time to absorb any vocab so you have nothing useful to say. I keep telling myself that two years of intensive language courses will pay off for the rest of my life. Swedish is easy, yes.
Does it affect the way your screen renders things or is it only on the gorilla glass?
My friend dropped his belt buckle on his LG Optimus 2X and cracked his gorilla glass but it still turns on and renders without problems. He sent it back to LG and got a replacement (only the glass) for $5 + $10 service fee.
Or maybe this can help?
Thanks for the link. My glass is immaculate and the crack is in the screen component mounted beneath the glass itself.
More than a little polishing required here!
<edit: apologies for the bad photo. snap decision and not set up fully hence the reflection!>
If you find a source for the bits, I would be pleased to hear about it.
My buddy's son did the same thing, but the display underneath is OK, but the glass is cracked. He now has my spare gel case, but needs to find a new glass.
Someone else, with an iPhone 4, told me his agent charged £180 to replace the glass when he did it.
The screen, glass and bezel seem to comprise one unit. I haven't taken my S2 apart any further than the rear plastic cover and bezel as I only really want to try this once I get around to replacing the screen for real. It seems it will be a "full body transplant" of all components and boards from the old damaged (well, killed) screen straight across to the new unit.

Most of this evening will be spent looking for sources. Amazon and "Ali Express" seem like the most likely sources, however I haven't even found suggestions here really. Has nobody broken their S2 yet, unlike me?
I'm marginally concerned about ordering from a random Chinese site, however since it likely won't come from anywhere else what can I do? X'D
Oh, and despite my apparent light-hearted posting I am still depressed. Levity in the face of gravity and all that.

I sympathise with the OP. I cracked the glass to the left of the home screen button, it shattered in an area 6 x 10 mm and propogated from the bottom left hand corner, with 4 long cracks running into the main screen area. Fortunatly for me the it still works and the long cracks are very fine and not too distracting.
It was in my pocket when it happen and i don't recall bashing into anything. I assume it was a glancing blow from the handle of a cupboard door which matches the hight where my phone would sit in my pocket. When I first pull it out I thought I had my friends phone (HTC Touch HD2 since he has cracks from where it fell from his bike) gutted when I realised what had occurred.
I have looked up service centres in the uk and was sent to CPW in Bristol, spoke to "the Tech Guy" they quote £150, 2 days lead on the part (incidental anecdote: and their engineer isnt in because he has a bad back. The guy told me had had a similar crack in his sgs2.) Have found others offering fitting for £125 but would much prefer the recommendation of a stranger on a website i lurk in . I have put a cheap screen protector on top so not to loose further glass.
anyway good luck.
Small donation sent. Good luck.
Thank you! I really appreciate it and the other donations made so far. I calculate that I am about 2-3% of the way there already. I think I remember where my anti-static wrist strap is also! I just need to locate a SAMOLED+ screen replacement.
I believe I will need to inspect the screen assembly when it arrives, as this may not involve a "full body" transplant and might just require the Gorilla glass debonding from the bezel rather than a full disassemble. I'm not sure which of these I actually prefer however...
@s1lvf1sh - those propogating cracks must be a complete nightmare as any pressure will surely apply stress along them! I don't know whether the glass can be replaced on its own as it seems to be that it is bonded to the SAMOLED itself. Perhaps this goes some way as to explaining the high cost of glass replacement services? I hope to see Samsung using flexible AMOLEDs in the next couple of years, as they appear to be all but immune to convential damage.
....and unconvential damage....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8S8tbQMp2k
Pulled the trigger on a new SAMOLED screen from a UK reseller for a reasonable price. Should arrive next week, so unless I get some good time during the day that week I will be documenting the replacement process next Saturday and uploading the same or the next day or thereabouts.
Thanks to everybody that made donations. Found out yesterday that my next language book will cost me €49(£42) which is a serious dent in our general finances alongside this new screen and my intended bumper case. Any supplementary donations are always welcome of course! :-D
Whilst I am on-topic; if any steps of the transplant process need documenting in specific detail, it would be a good time to discuss those now I guess.
I'm no expert here..... but on my O2 mini I had many a year ago I had the screen go garbled like that after i dropped it. Now I understand that this phone is a amoled where my O2 was an lcd but I found the problem with the O2 was the flat cable connection for the screen to the motherboard....
Just a thought and doubt your problem is the same but you have to pull the phone apart anyway so worth a check.

It's unlikely that I am the first person with a broken S2 LCD/LED given the number of them up for sale out there. In that respect any fatal design flaws should have been reported by now, so I doubt it will be a similar problem however I never rule anything out until I have appropriate evidence so I will definitely examine the damaged screen and trace the source of the crack back through to the initial shock transmission point in the (relatively) inelastic case.
In other news, I am heavily tempted to buy an aluminium Taurus case.
don't buy the story. My SG2 fell down 3times. One time even from more than 2.5 meters hight. No impact on any function so far.
sorry, but wish you good luck anyway. May God give you power to manage your life with honour.
Story? It's far from being a story at this end of the Internet! I'm stuck with "using" a GT-S3370E whilst I've been rejigging money to cover this repair and have discovered the downside of syncing all your contacts with your Google account....when you move backwards to an older phone that can't do that, you find that you have no numbers on your phone. Bleh.
Good luck with dropping your phone "successfully". Most people just don't get second chances you know? Just happy that I'm living my life honourably under my own steam thanks.
PS. A big Saturday handshake to the last donation received! Makes me feel a hell of a lot less "out in the cold" from my little disaster.
PPS. Missing Android.
Feel with you. Made my first scratch today dropping mine from knee height as well...Luckily its at the edge of the screen and barely visible.

No scratches in mine. I suppose that just makes it worse, that I wrote off a pristine Gorilla Glass screen by cracking the LED underneath. I hated the scratch in my original S. 3mm right down in the middle, two-thirds down. Grr.
Considering a Zonus leather wallet case instead of a bumper. Not a fan of the portrait ones though. A little too Star Trek communicator for my liking....reminds me of Ace Ventura too....

Cracked Camera Glass. Another build quality issue?

I've had my One from Rogers Canada since launch day last Friday.
I've been reading all the issues here about the build qualities of this phone. Mine has a hair gap on the top and the screen also rises slightly at the top edge. I've decided that these were ok and happily used my phone with great care.
No I do not have a case, and neither did I use a case for my previous Samsung Infuse which I used 2 years without dropping it ever.
Today when I turned my One over, the camera glass was cracked! It looks like it got hit somewhere and just gave in. Seems pretty impossible as the rest of the phone is in perfect condition without a single scratch. I keep the phone in my pocket top down, screen facing inwards as I always have in the last few years.
This is so frustrating...I'm afraid if I get an exchange I'll end up with one or more of the several build issues that people have been seeing.

You will get an exchange for a damaged phone that was caused by you (intentionally or unintentionally) ? They should kick you out of the store for asking that or hang up on you if you call to simply get it exchanged without paying for the damage.
People these days .....
Probably wasn't a high impact hit. You probably leaned on the corner of a table or something without realizing it and the pressure from the corner was focused all on that point.
The do not believe that I should be held responsible for this glass. It should point to the fact that the glass might have been fractured slightly so that slight pressure pushed it in from the beginning.
The argument is that I have used this phone for 3 days, taking exceptional care of it, and ended up with a cracked camera glass as opposed of my previous phone, which I used for 2 years and doesn't have a dent in its plastic, let alone cracked glass.
Also, why be so offensive Mr insomnia? Is the fact that the One's build quality is way lower than expected hurting your fanboy heart?
Probably be a great time to buy a case, don't you think?

Feel sorry for you bro. I am getting a leather pouch this weekend to avoid any damage to my One

even if you didn't do this, You're going to have a hell of a time proving it. You very well could have just leaned on it too hard during the day and put pressure on the glass. You need a real friendly service rep to accept the possibility there was a previous fracture
10 years ago if this were a psp or gameboy we all knew we were sh1t out of luck and that it was our own fault. We "deserve" nothing.

Times have changed, customers expect more because companies are providing more. If I can get better quality service why would I settle for less?
Also, phones shouldn't be designed with cases in mind. I shouldn't need to have a case for my phone to prevent camera glass shattering through normal daily use.
I'm heading back to the store tomorrow and see if I get a nice rep to help me. I'll let you guys know

Move along. For all we know OP may have raised an important point. Just because you don't believe him doesn't mean he's at fault. If you don't have anything relevant to contribute then beat it.
OP, keep us posted. I haven't run across anything like that with my device. Do you use the phone to the point where it gets quite hot?

Thanks! Don't worry though, I'm trying to point out this problem and see if anyone else has similar experiences and we can pinpoint an issue.
I don't game on phones at all, so my device usually stays quite cool. It does warm up a bit after ~10 minutes of screen time but I doubt that could cause any issues.

That is interesting, thanks for sharing this, I'm looking out to see if anyone else is seeing this.
Just in case this starts happening more, my phone is from batch FA346W
Was raining the whole day today so didn't go to the store, will update once I do
Hm, might have been that the phone got hot enough to make the metal expand faster than the glass....
Not that I doubt you on for your mishap. But knowing Rogers and their ways - my family has been with them since they were still AT&T - you will need hell of a lot of explaining to convince the CSR to make them comply to your exchange request. And online sources won't make much of a statement in their mind. Try play the loyalty card and plead for forgiveness.
As to the picture above, it seems more like an impact hit as the glass seems to fracture in the center of the piece and the cracks don't extend to the edge.
Looks like the phone was abused. Hope you have Insurance because that is definitely not a warranty issue
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
Hi OP,
not meaning to be patronising but the glass is more brittle than the casing with lower impact resistance. so a load that might not necessarily damage the casing will more than likely damage the glass. the chances that the damage is simply contained to the glass region though is odd and one would expect there to be at least some signs of wear/ scratches etc even close to this region as in a typical case.
the main thing is how it happened which appears to be the mystery and the exchange will ultimately be based on this. looking at your picture it looks like an impact dead on the centre of the glass from the outside in. hard to be totally certain considering your pic.
i cant think of a viable scenario though other than something along the lines in my first paragraph considering the metal is in perfect condition.
i would just tell them what you have stated.
Hi OP,
I had exactly the same problem. My unit was only a day old with not a single blemish anywhere on the handset besides the crack on the camera. In fact I'm fairy certain it cracked whilst resting on my table which I found to be very odd. Anyway I did manage to get a replacement with very little hassle.
A note to some other users:
In an incident such as this the consumer is entitled to a refund or replacement or a repair depending how old the item is since purchase. There is even further statutory protection specifically under the sale of goods act. This is an expensive (£500) phone and as such it's quality and durability should be commensurate to the price paid. Thus if the OP can establish the crack happened without having dropped the phone or damaging the phone in some other way then he will be entitled to a replacement which seems likely as there are no other scratches or dents anywhere else on the unit.
I am open to listening to others' opinions but should stress that I am a lawyer and therefore am quite knowledgable on matters such as this.

Product Nexus 10 3D-Printed Dock

Hey all,
I wanted to share with you my progress on a little pet project.
Since Google never got around to releasing their charging dock for the N10, I thought I'd have a bit of a play and see if I could come up with one myself. Fortunately, having access to 3D printers at work, I can!
It's designed to work with the fantastic Pogo charger available on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B2166BS/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And I'm offering this as a free download to anyone that wants it, to go and print it themselves. File is the the widely used .stl format.
Ignore the scummy white crap in some of the pictures - I hadn't fully cleaned it yet!

I have designed it to work with the magnetic charger available on Amazon, and it is designed it to fit around this case, which it does:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AD6W57W/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I am more than happy to draw up an alternate version with a thinner slot, for those who go caseless. Let me know if you would like me to draw this up!
Notes on building it:
The charging port fits VERY snugly, but that's kind of the point. Once it's in, it's in!
The hole underneath is so you can then feed the USB cable back through the unit. It is necessary to avoid having an ugly, trailing wire.
Any failures, damage, mishaps, injuries or deaths that you suffer as a result of this project I claim no responsibility for, I'm just trying to help you out!
Please let me know what you think, all feedback is welcome and I'm happy to redesign as necessary!

can you convert it to STEP file or IGS?
It looks great. But why create it so thick? Wouldn't it print faster and cheaper if this is thin-wall out? Maybe create a screw slot to screw in a metal plate to make it feel more solid.
How much did it cost you to print that? I don't see how the Pogo cable get fix in so it won't move around.
How much did it cost you for the 3d printing? Im taking an engineering class and I might be able to do this as one of the projects next semester.

You are indeed correct. Most 3D-print shops will be able to print it 'sparse', in as such that they can build the inner with a honeycomb structure, saving time and materials. As for costs - no idea I'm afraid - I'm lucky enough to be able to do projects like this for free!

No problem - if you have a specific case with a different thickness then send me the dimensions - I'd be happy to draw an alternate with a different sized slot for you!
As an FYI -
both UPS (in 4 pilot cities - NYC, SF, ...) and Shapeways.com can quote you to print it
Both quotes are in the neighborhood of $200-250...
So yeah - i think its a great idea, but one would have to really put on a thinking cap in order to hollow out/redesign it in a way to use far less material. to get it down to what I would think is a reasonable price point (~$50)

Wow... crazy money for the solid model - can they not run it as a sparse model with a hollowed-out inner?
^ might as well invest on a printer if price is around $250.
I need to do more homework on these 3D printers.
Thank you very much.

I have seen this price as well, but I think it should be cheaper for a hollow version (price found on plastikliebe.de).
@jonnug
which program did you use to make the model?
I have a FabLab with open workshop here in Nuremberg with 3D printers.
If i understand it right i must only pay for the material.
I wil go on Friday or Saturday in and check this.

Hey, thank you for this! I had started to model one but wasn't making good progress then I saw this and it is perfect! I just got a Makerbot Replicator 2 for the Robotics Club at my school and my teacher said he would start the print before he left school today, but in the software for it, we chose to do a hexagonal infill to save time and filament but it is still estimated to take 6 hours. I hope it will not be too light due to it being hollow, but I will post pictures and impressions tomorrow. Thank you again!

The honeycomb infill is exactly how I designed it to be made - as you can see from previous posts the costs for a solid model are outrageous!
It took me about 6 hours to make it too.
The weight is quite light, but not so light that you send it flying when you prod the screen, so I think it's about right!
Works Great! Thanks!
Hey, I got the stand 2 days ago and its been pretty good so far. It cost about $6 to make and took about 6 hours and 45 minutes to print. It is hollow so it is very light and does get lifted up when I pick up the tablet but I'm working on a fix for that. My main complaint is when I put the cable through it was such a tight fit I can barely say it did. I ended up damaging some areas and edges using tools to push, pull, and force the damned thing through. Right now the charging part is slightly angled and I cant pull it out or push it in further to level it. The last picture attached kind of shows the honey comb fill. All in all I'm glad I printed it and thanks to Jonnug for designing it, it works even without a case on it. Thanks!

note 10.1-14 to note pro 12.2. A question on dpi.

I'm getting a note 12.2 today, (well very strongly considering it) after having to replace my 10.1 twice now for a screen problem. I use the spen extensively for college and I Flippin love it. I'm finding the 10.1 a little small for a true paper replacement so the 12.2 is looking pretty nice, being almost the size of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.
However I'm reading that as far as screen real estate goes, it's just scaled up from the 10.1 screen and offers no additional real estate. What are your opinions / experiences with this? I know the physically larger screen size will give me more writing room, but a higher dpi would be nice too. I love these tablets, the spen is great and incredibly useful. I'm hoping the 12.2 will make it that much better.

I had the same complaint regarding DPI. Was disappointed everything was simply scaled up for the bigger screen. You'll have to root to change the DPI althought in theory if you write the same size it really shouldn't matter for your purpose.

Yes, plenty of people have changed the DPI. I did it with ROM toolbox as my root explorer kept crashing when I asked R/W on the system drive (I am rooted). I first used 270 then settled on 280. Does not effect performance...
Well just got the 12.2. So far I like it a lot better than the 10.1. A lot snappier and the size is awesome lol.

I went with a build.prop edit to change lcd density globally at first and then had to switch back. NextIssue application was wonking out on me at any non-stock lcd density. The app would work fine but display of magazine pages would have large black stripes in them. What I do now is simply use app settings (xposed module) to do changes of dpi per application.
I'd say that if one changes global dpi they just need to be aware that if they see peculiar graphics behavior in an application then they may need to revert to stock density and verify it's not the dpi change that's causing it.
Probably the easier way if one doesn't want to go in per app for everything is to do a global change and then use per-app to revert particular uncooperative apps back to stock density.
So before i could even get a case for this thing , the screen is already broken. Less than 24 hours later lol. Was sitting on my couch, we have tile And hardwood flooring. Slipped of my lap and landed face down. I knew it was broken before it even picked it up. Kinda makes you sick to see a ~$1000 item broken like that. I'm using it to type this... but damn.. lol. Case is due to be delivered to tomrorrow.
Here's the thing that gets me though. I bought it at Frys electronics, I was told I had 15 Days to buy the extended warrenty. Turns out I dont. Not that it matters since they don't cover accidental damage. So I decide to get a hold of Samsung and buy their warrenty. I've had dells and HP's in the past and have usually purchased the total protection plans for cases like this. Nope.... Samsung doesn't offer an extended warrenty if you did not buy it directly from them. Even if they did give extended warranties on items not purchased on Samsung.com, they don't offer any accidental damage. ...
Am I the only one who thinks this is rediculous? I'm carrying around a 12 in sheet of glass , of course it's going to get broken, and there are no options for me to protect your investment?
Finally found square trade, 159 bucks for 3 years for accidental damage protection, hardware failure, etc. That's 50% less than Frys wanted for 2 years of just extended warranty. I bought a Dell laptop a few weeks ago, was about to buy the Dell total protection plan.. which is 300 bucks for 3 years. Square trade does it for 180 bucks for 3 years...
Ya.. I'll be using square trade from now on.
I've included a picture to make you cringe

I am sick on buying this one as I am very happy with my note10.1 2012.
And your story IS CREEPY. A nightmare.
Feel sorry for your loss
Well, i use to buy my insurance from accidents in external private insurance companies. It's about $50 for 2 years (as for $750 expensive N10.1/2012 at the time of its purchase, central european country), and they give you a new device or full price back if not available, even when broken accidentaly (well, once, insurers agent told me that I should BREAK my device myself in a time near insurance's end, so in the worst scenario i'll get completely new device and in the better one, i'll get whole price in cash, so I can buy myself a completely new - and more modern ofc - device).
Well, the second case is if you would arrive to insurers BEFORE your shocking accident as you were blazing fast.
Btw as you saw the accident happening live, do you feel that its the tablet that is so easy to damage, and it gives you an impression of easy-breakable, or was it a damage that can be described as adequate to the impact? Or just bad luck, which always can happen by hitting in a critical point?
And... Hope u get it fixed as cheap, as well and as quick as possible.
Extended warranty is not insurance and trying to buy something to cover your tablet after you broke it is just wrong and technically insurance fraud. Don't be so careless with a $1000 item!

I have ZERO patience for the "morality police". Give me a freaking break...the guy was using the tablet in his lap and it inadvertently fell to the ground and shattered. You may be the high and mighty one who would just take it in stride, but 9 out of 10 people (whether it is technically right or not) would do what this guy did. Your persecution of him is laughable.
That is the reason I have a home insurance that covers errors I make myself. If I ever break my laptop, tablet or design lamp by accidentally, the insurance helps me to cover some expenses.
But... dropping that tablet to the floor from 50 cm or so and the screen looks like after the war, it makes me wonder the build quality - especially the screen quality. The screen, however, looks like it got hit to the two certain areas. The floor isn't "flat" or the tablet felt on something on the floor, that was causing high pressure to the screen (a point load).

In my opinion, the problem with society is the overall lack of education. Go read what you wrote! That's worse than my 3rd grader's grammar correction assignment I helped him with last week.
I didn't say "weather it is", I said "WHETHER it is"! Also, there simply "ARE" no questions, not "is". Oh, one more thing, if you are going to insult someone, do it correctly...that's why YOU'RE the tool in this instance. I know that last one went over your head, ask someone to help you if you wish. Regards, my friend.
Call me out on Grammer and typing skills cause I'm typing on a tablet and auto correction is kicking in if that I'd what makes you feel superior. I'd certainly rather have Grammer/typing issues then be a low life scum bag.
Please take it to PM guys.

Buying insurance after the item had been broken might be considered a fraud - if you give the insurer not a true statement about the device state at the moment of signing the insurance agreement... BUT - there is no insurer which will agree in signing such an agreement without seeing the device itself. Even if someone would be so silly - he still has to write down the serial/IMEI/whatsoever of the device, so he must have a real physical contact with it. I think that discussing if it's moral or not is pointless, then.
My advice was more likely pointed at what can be done to avoid such an accidents in a future. It is obvious that in situation which happened in a discussed situation there is NO legal way to obtain a free repair/replacement...

EDIT - NEW DOWNLOAD LINK, ALL FILES ZIPPED AS REQUESTED BY KTNEMEC:

Enjoy.
Love it.
If reasonably priced, I'm ready to purchase!!

Not for sale! Up as a free download, because I'm a nice guy.
Just need the pogo charger from Amazon, and a friendly local 3d-print bureau.

can you convert it to STEP file or IGS?
It looks great. But why create it so thick? Wouldn't it print faster and cheaper if this is thin-wall out? Maybe create a screw slot to screw in a metal plate to make it feel more solid.
How much did it cost you to print that? I don't see how the Pogo cable get fix in so it won't move around.
How much did it cost you for the 3d printing? Im taking an engineering class and I might be able to do this as one of the projects next semester.

My son and I are both be getting 3d printers for Xmas (his for his dorm room), I think this would make a very useful first print. Thank you!

You are indeed correct. Most 3D-print shops will be able to print it 'sparse', in as such that they can build the inner with a honeycomb structure, saving time and materials. As for costs - no idea I'm afraid - I'm lucky enough to be able to do projects like this for free!

Hi, no idea on costs I'm afraid, although it's only a small project, no bigger footprint than a CD. It shouldn't cost the earth.

I requested this item here in Germany.
The Volume is 115 ccm, so i must pay 80 Euro for this.
Uhhhh i must think about tis.....

I have seen this price as well, but I think it should be cheaper for a hollow version (price found on plastikliebe.de).
@jonnug
which program did you use to make the model?
I have a FabLab with open workshop here in Nuremberg with 3D printers.
If i understand it right i must only pay for the material.
I wil go on Friday or Saturday in and check this.

I drew it in SolidWorks, very easy package to use.

Thanks!
