Net Neutrality, Google's deal with Verizon [Android unrelated] - EVO 4G General

You only need to read the first 3 paragraphs below to get the idea, but Google and Verizon are talking about a deal to throttle internet speeds to websites that can pay more money.
Anyways, here's a link to a pre-made email to send, all you have to do is put some info in. http://freepr.es/bXFB7i
I don't really want to sound like I'm some spokesperson about net neutrality, I just agree with it, and I think this is a bad deal, so I'm trying to get the word out best way I know.
Google is about to cut a deal with Verizon that would end the Internet as we know it.
According to a front-page New York Times story, the deal allows “Verizon to speed some online content to Internet users more quickly if the content's creators are willing to pay for the privilege."
It would create fast Internet lanes for the largest corporations and slow lanes for the rest of us.
That’s why we’re starting a mass protest by Google users to stop these two companies from joining forces to sell out millions of people like us who use the Internet.
If Millions Join Our Call, We Can Stop this Deal: Tell Google, “Don’t Be Evil"
Google’s motto is supposed to be “Don’t Be Evil.” But this deal puts the company in bed with the devil.
From the beginning, the Internet has been a level playing field that allows everyone to connect to one another and the world of content available online -- whether it's ABC News or your cousin’s wedding video. There’s only one Internet, and it shouldn’t matter who your provider is or whether you're logging on from home or your cell phone.
This deal will change all of that, allowing Google and Verizon to pick what websites you can see over others. The result couldn't be bleaker for the future of the Internet and for free speech and independent voices online.
Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin created Google to make information freely available to everyone online. But this deal is a complete reversal that abandons their core principles:
Sign this letter and tell Google’s founders:
“Your Verizon deal IS evil, and it must be stopped.”
It’s up to the millions of people who use Google every day to tell the company to do the right thing.
Google must walk away from this bad deal, and make sure Internet users everywhere can enjoy the entire open Internet wherever, whenever and however they want.

It isnt just Google..this is really getting to be a big story. Check this story out.

I havent had a chance to really dig into this but if it is as the couple stories I have read about it suggest this is not good.

Net Neutrality has been a big issue for awhile now. Google was known for fighting for it. That's why this was such a big deal. Turns out it to be false.

if this is true it could very well be android related as Verizon could shut HTC and other manufacturers out. i would like a more firm statement from them

They could I suppose, but HTC makes phones for them too, and they could probably afford to have the speed increase if this were true. I don't know why Verizon would do that.
I don't follow news very well, but it looks like both Google, and Verizon, have denied this.
I haven't read into it much, but sounds like it's false. I'm glad Google is fighting for net neutrality, which is why when I heard about this alleged deal, I was upset at Google.

Good luck. Didn't we just see the news that Android is killing the other mobile platforms in sales? I still believe in Google. They fought against Apple and MS, and now they're taking serious ground. They'll do the same if they meet opposition from another front. But, yes, they do need to state their position unequivocally and officially.

yeah... clearly they are. but RIM is still top for business solutions. I just hope it stays that way. Android should keep their noses out of business [to an extent] and RIM should keep their nose out of social networking/more of an entertainment arena. at least for now. neither has a grasp fully on the other and trying to do so will just water down all phones

Newer Nexus One's to feature HTC's new maxTouch technology?

Do you think it'll happen? There has been rumors floating around about it.
Doubt it.
Where are the rumours from? here?
Damn the title got me excited. Well I sure hope so because I was planning on ordering a nexus one in 41 days when i'm 22 months into my t-mobile contract. Could you please link us to a news article that talks about this. Thanks
I was on someone else's computer and don't have the link for it though. Sorry.

Why would that blow? How can anyone expect the hardware world not to continue evolving. There will always be something better than what you have... if you have the best right now, something is about to come out that beats it. You can't expect that new technology in an embedded device, such as a phone, will take the place of older technology used in current generation devices.
There is no reason to believe that HTC is going to change their manufacturing process for the Nexus One, or any of their currently released phones. The new technology will be in place for NEW devices, it would be quite odd for them to just start making Nexus Ones with different hardware simply because that hardware exists in the new devices they are manufacturing.

Actually, judging by how fast google goes through versions and software (look at Chrome browser, already at 4.0 or 5.0), google is probably already testing Nexus Two. That thing'll probably have new screen.
They got a contract with current screen manufacturer, I bet they won't worry about switching now.

Lmao.
For some reason I believe this a stupid question. The bashing and returns that would occur after this change, and the complaints and people maybe even wanting their money back would be so gradual it would cause a bad costly uproar.
People would form small not needed hate groups, make *****y blog post about how Google somehow "scamed" customers, Google's name would be flamed harshly by people who want attention. I could just imagine this happening..

kinda like what they did with the myTouch. they add a 3.5mm jack?? thats lame because all the people who own the phone previous to this launch now want that phone but cant get it because they just bought the other version like two months earlier (and just in case you take this literally I'M GENERALIZING)

Just wanted to give people a heads up since its such an iconic game for the iPhone.
I wont be getting it myself (wiimote + emaulators suit me just fine) but I really like the fact that more and more iPhone developers keep coming over to Android. Soon enough iPhone owners will have one less reason to justify putting up with Apples monopolistic system.
another point is that the iphone must be connected to a pc to do just about anything
whereas android users need not even own a pc/laptop, EVER, since everything can be done on the phone
to the cloud!
Not everywhere
Free Google maps navigation? Not in my country.
Free Google voice? Not in my country.
iPhone only on AT&T? Not in my country.

also in uk iphones on every network.

On the other hand, you have a choice to use Google Market and apps. If you don´t want it you don´t. Apple does not give their users much if a choice but that´s ok also. It all depends on your own needs.

I like the thought, but
The only thing that's going to get through to them is their pocketbook. If noone buys in or leaves them high and dry then they'll change! Until then the're gonna keep trying to make the most profit they can with minimal overhead(which is the way of every company in the world some worse than others)!
Yep, and the more we yell about it, the better.
Yelling, or threatening, at AT&T isn't going to do any good. If customers left in droves, then yes, AT&T would feel it in their pocketbooks and take action. However, the likelihood of that actually happening is tiny, and not in the numbers necessary to get the point across.
However, what CAN hurt AT&T is bad press. They already suffer from a poor consumer image. I posted over at androidforums.com (I can't post links yet but it's "Twitter hashtag to protest..." in the Atrix 4G forum) about protesting the price. If all of a sudden there was a single, unified twitter hashtag (@'ed at @ATT of course) that reprehended AT&T for their greed then that would garner their attention. Especially if within that tweet we let it be known that what they did is specifically why we're not getting the Atrix.
As lame as it is, a trending hashtag can be a big thing in the eyes of P.R.
The Atrix for $200 w/ two year is reasonable. $500 for the laptop dock is ridiculous. The Atrix for $200 and the laptop dock for $300 w/ 2gb plan and tethering is simply absurd.
I was thinking of staying with AT&T when the Atrix was announced at CES, but I may be looking to switch to Verizon now and picking up the Bionic.

In a roundabot way, yes, I disagreed with you while agreeing with you.
I think if everyone yells their own random thing at AT&T and makes their own random hashtags then it will just be lots of white noise.
If there's a sense of organization and unity, easily brought about by an emerging "Trending Topic" (thru hashtags), then I think AT&T will be a lot more receptive to hearing it. But yeah, we're on the same side here. Sorry if I came off as dissenting--I didn't mean to.
Does anyone have any good ideas for a hashtag?

this morning at wing bowl I stumbled into the stadium and saw an at&t booth by the door. i walked over and started yelling at them about how the dock pricing was bull**** and stuff. i remember it becoming a decent convo with one of the reps there, but it may have just been me drunkenly yelling at the dude, idk.
either way, i literally yelled at at&t about the dock pricing.
oh and i asked if they knew how much the hd multimedia dock would cost (standalone) and they couldnt give me a price
Excellent move Now if any of those reps actually had the power to change any of this then we'd be on our way. I still like the phone but I am sure going to wait it out now to see what else comes around. Man, I wish I would have taken off for the wing bowl.

That's brilliant. I think yelling at any AT&T Employees is great! AS LONG AS you make sure you let them know that you are not yelling at them, the employee, but you are very upset with the company and that they should report to their superior about it.
Gosh, I have no idea why I'm so riled up about a phone and its accessory. Granted, my birthday is right around the corner and this news completely derailed what I had planned. Oh well. I just hope that we can cause enough uproar so that there might be real action taken.

Well I posted a not so nice comment on the AT&T Facebook page about the pricing of the dock and their lack of concern for their customers that keep them in business, and their already horrible reputation. It would be good for all of us to post something there to make them notice.
I did not want the laptop docking station. I have maxed out my Captivate....it needs more ram and more speed which is what the Atrix has. I was going to be the first to get it, now I have to think about it and look at other options so I can't say for sure what I will do other than post more comments on their Facebook page.

ROFL this is definitely some mind blowing news. Wow I just woke up am I dreaming this. I'm suprised motorola is that cheap 12 billion makes me wonder why tmobile was more expensive 39 billion motorola has been around a lot longer and I thought there sales in multiple markets were pretty good
Anyone else think Google is going to buy the rest of the android team. ( Samsung, HTC)
It could be good, our future phones software will come directly from google & not be chopped and screwed like they are now.
I doubt apple would try to sue google if that happens.
This is crazy, I can only imagine how big Google will be 10 years from now, now they have some serious patents and will always have ad money, and that will only grow in the long run.

that will never happen... those companies are very happy right now however. the patents from motorola secure androids future against attacks from microsoft and apple, which is great for companies like samsung and HTC who are heavily invested in android

Guess most of us are a**holes or morons according to this survey

wow - stupid but fun to waste 5 minutes on.

that was probably commissioned by apple,
Iphone - older, more affluent
Android - younger, less affluent
Looking ahead, iphone = doomed to a ~10% niche market, just like the Mac
Put me in the asshole camp.
It states that android users are 50% more likely to use Yahoo mail.
I call bull**** on that one.

86% more likely to live in the country
well that's obviously because AT&T has crap coverage in rural areas. Same can be said about iPhone more likely to live in the city. Verizon is better at least, but around here if you live in the sticks you are best going with US Cellular who obviously doesn't carry the iPhone, but they have a few Android devices.

Well, if 2 out of 1000 iPhoners have Yahoo mail and 3 out of 1000 Androiders, then that would be "50% more likely," even though essentially nobody on either side actually has it.
It's probably true, I would bet, because most of the iPhone people I know don't even realize that AOL isn't the only email provider on the internet.

Actually, it says that iphone users are "more likely to say they lead," which I tend to believe. Studies have shown that "popular kids" and those who think they are trend-setters tend to be the biggest followers (copying what they see on TV, movies, ads, etc.). iPhone users believe they are leaders and trend-setters because they're doing what they see other popular people do, but clearly there's a difference between saying you're a leader and actually being one.

Yeah, I was going to come here and say that might also mean android users are just more likely to have multiple email addresses.
Edit: And now that I've continued reading, I see that is not case. I'm skeptical. Though we are more likely to be gmail users, so, maybe we don't need the other crap.
I had to come comment on the "122% more likely to want a pretty looking, but worthless, device" that's the iPhone demo to a T
(not that the iPhone is worthless, but they definitely have that attitude.)
That is the dumbest **** I ever read. Apple propaganda. Sad thing is it will actually work on someone.
I suppose the take home message here is that android has come full circle. We here on XDA aren't your average android user anymore. The average android user is someone that went to best buy and figured "if I'm going to pay ____, I may as well get a smartphone."
In other words, this is really a testament to the extent that android has done away with the concept of "dumbphones," more than it is a statement about user differences.
This may as well be iPhone users vs the public.

Well, I don't think "propaganda" is fair. I don't think anyone is trying to pull one over on anyone, or make a point.
It's just important to keep in mind that this is a self selecting survey, with no verification. Perhaps iPhone users exaggerated, or weren't quite honest with themselves, as someone already hinted at. To me a large number of the answers iPhone look like they're trying too hard to look special/deep. "Look at me! My fav ice cream is salted caramel, my fav food is tapas, my fav fruit is the clementine!"
Edit: not to mention a lot of the points are "iPhone users are more likely to spend money, regardless of the return" Well, no kidding. Maybe way more iPhone users use gogoinflight because android users, correctly, IMO, think paying $13 to have internet access for 3 hours is absurd. So, you can take a lot of these data points either way.
whats the problem with clementines?

The fruit-to-effort ratio is too low.
I mean really, if I'm going to go to all that trouble to peel the darn thing, I should get a little more for the effort. iPhone people probably have an app to peel it for them.

I LOL'd at this one. "fruit-to-effort ratio"...that made my day so far, thank you for that.
And FWIW, I had never heard of salted caramel ice cream until recently. And it is fricking delicious. I love caramel anything (within reason of course) so that makes sense.

i take it youve never peeled one then, because the peel comes off of them way easier than an orange, and they have no pith. pound wise, they are cheaper too if you buy in a 10 lb bag.
