Using your phone as a modem (tethering)
Get online with your notebook or desktop computer at any time, using your phone’s data connection.
You need your SIM card inserted on your phone to use the data connection. To find out how to set up and use the data connection, see Data connection.
Before you can use your phone as a modem, be sure to copy first HTCDriver.exe from your phone’s microSD card to your computer. To find out how to copy, see Copying files to or from the storage card. Double-click this file and follow the onscreen instructions to install the modem driver on your computer.
Make sure your phone’s data connection is turned on. See Data connection to learn how to turn on the phone’s data connection.
Connect the phone to the computer using the provided USB cable.
On the Connect to PC screen, select Internet sharing, and then tap Done.

Just as nice additional information for anybody encountering this thread from a search: tethering works out of the box on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx).

but it doesn't work at all with ubuntu 10.10 it did work on 10.04, .. then i installed backports and it worked on 10.10 however ubuntu did an other kernel upgrade and it didn't work anymore.

Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device Driver

Had a search and found 1 or 2 things but they never worked for me. Anyway I have complied this driver for Windows XP so all you need to do is add it to your Internal Storage, plug it in to your computer copy it to your PC, then set your phone to internet sharing. When it moans that it dosn't know where the driver is, point it to them and it should work.
I just tested it on an XP machine and it worked so hopefully it will work for you.
If there is already a solution for this please let em know.

4.2.6 USB tethering
I downloaded the drivers but don't know where to put them. I think I'm not doing something right.
1. Plug in phone via USB (dont' have "Wireless tether for root users running")
2. settings / wireless controls/ "click" internt tethering
3. go to PC and wireless network connections, select G1Tether and click connect. it will not connect
is this a driver problem? do i need "wireless tether for root users" running?
help
thanks... vista and windows 7 has the drivers inbuilt but not for windows xp..
Driver works on Magic 32A with SuperD 1.5.1, WinXP SP2.
Thank you very, very much
Maciek.
Worked beautifully for me!
Worked great for me!
Thanks,
Ambarish
I cannot get these drivers to work. I'm using an xp machine and every time I turn on the usb tethering, it automatically installs drivers identified as "HTC remote ndis remote device" and it has a big yellow ! next to it. I tried pointing at your folder for the device wizard and it says it couldn't locate better drivers to install. What am I missing here?
I have the same issue with you, waiting for the solution.

Try tell it that you will select the driver manually. Then click the "Have Disk" button and point to the inf of this driver. That should install it regardless of what Device Manager thinks is the best drriver.
Been having trouble getting wired tether to work also. In device manager I had a yellow "!" sign on USB composite device, installed the driver from this thread and the caution sign disappeared - still no tethering though
I suppose I'll just have to make do with wireless tether.
when I point that file as the driver it tells me it isnt for that device.
Connect your phone, then when it says it has found new hardware but cant install it, go to the device manager, double click the and click reinstall driver.
Point the folder to where ever you saved the driver too and it should install.

That fixed it for me. Thanks.
Works
Worked for my Nexus 1 Cyanogen 5.0.5
Thanks to you for posting this and to the user who posted the info about vista and 7 having the driver already. I was scratching my head as to why this worked on my home laptop (vista) and not my work laptop (xp).
i got an old fossil
Windows 2000.....is this possible?
Thanks you! Something that finally works!
I have a question. My PC at work still has its normal LAN connection through a network card. Now I have this second connection through my G1. If I make a web request with Firefox, which connection will it use? Do I have to disable the LAN connection to guarantee that it uses the G1? Or is there someway to make Windows default to the G1 if it's attached, and use the LAN otherwise?
Works for USB tethering using Android 2.2 (Froyo) and Windows XP
Thanks for the driver. FYI I was able to use it with Android 2.2's built-in USB tethering and Windows XP SP3.
Unrooted Nexus One with stock Android 2.2 (Froyo)
this worked for me, thanks!
xp sp3+moto droid (rooted)+cm5.0.6.2

Use PC as modem for phone?

I know its possible to use the phone as a usb modem for the PC, is it possible to do the opposite via an app or adb like active sync does to share the ethernet connection to the phone, I don't have data, but would like to be able to use the net on my phone for some things.

yes on winmob, but i cant figure it out on android
there's currently no support for usbnet (linux) or rndis (windows) in dzo's kernel. Usbnet used to be available but was disabled to stabilize adb.

How come I cannot connect to my PC using the USB?

I currently have Froyo 2.2 on my HD2 and I am having fun with it.
However, I whenever I connect the phone to my PC using the USB connection, I can never see my phone connect to the PC.
I go to my computer and I don't see any new drive. I can easily do this with WinMo 6.5.
I need to transfer files from my computer to my phone but I cannot make the connection. Please help.
Is there some time of setting that I have to do?
I went to setting -->> Connect to PC --->> Default connection type --->> and I chose Disk Drive but it still does not work.
The options that I have are:
Charge Only
HTC Sync
Disk Drive
USB Tethering
I think I tried all 4 of the options but I still cannot connect my phone to my PC using the USB cable.
Please help.

you can go to market and search for this app(automount),then set it to auto mount when USB connected...then you should see your device on your PC...but you are unable to direct copy files to the device,it'll corrupt...
The most reliable way to copy file from pc to android now is install this software...Android explorer which allows drag and drop...everything...click here
download and install it...hey mate, next time please don't create a thread because of 1 question, try to ask in the thread of your build or search...
Cheers..that definitely will help you..

did you installed the tattoo's drivers? have you tried the usb connection software (must be set to usb storage)?
yes i did al of those things but it doesn't work i even did reinstal the drivers and htc sync
Check following path to set if you have already selected some thing by default
uncheck it.
Menu > Settings > Connect to PC > Select Ask me option
Then go to launcher and selected USB to PC
If it says Disk drive then select HTC Sync and Select Ask me option and click Done
when it prompts to choose quickly select disk drive and click OK (you have to be fast here other wise phone would go to htcsync)
If it goes to htc sync cancel and try to change again to sdcard/usbstorage and see if it prompts. or change again to htcsync and try again
I had bad experience with earlier donut builds where it is not easy to connect to PC
If you have already done this and not working then you could access sdcard via recovery
the last tip doesn't work for me neither???
does anyone knows a other solution so i can update my tattoo with htc sync?

Can you explain a bit more on what you did and what happened.
That would help people to understand what is happening.
By the way i have update my previous post with exact menu ( i had to go back to 1.6 rom for a while).
Can you also change you usb cable and see if it helps (if you can borrow from some one)
All the best
when i connect my phone i don't get the message from where to select diskdrive or htc sync i only get that message when i reboot my phone while it is conneced throug usb

I have possible answer
if u have adw launcher / launcher pro create custom shortcut activity> setting> SD card on homescreen connect usb click shortcut enable usb mass storage
ur phone attached on pc if not tell me what happened
As rallapag (almost?!) said, i used to connect it to PC, then enter the app drawer and find that app with a logo showing a light blue screen, maybe called USB to PC. Enter it and select HTC sync.

[Q] can not enable usb connection

I just installed CM7.1 on my Nook Color and can not enable usb so I can load files from my PC to the nook. I have read that there should be a prompt to enable the USB at the bottom of the screen but I don't see any prompt. Did something get lost during the installation?
Get Wifi File Explorer Pro. It's quicker, allows full browsing on your computer to access files for upload AND it lets you download everything from your NC which can be a godsend when trouble strikes. And you will not have any of those persistent problems using USB connexion.
