Android apps and there ads - Android Software Development

When you download a free app from the marketplace a majority of them happen to have ad banners (which in some case's isn't a problem)
My question is who do the ads support
Do they support the developers
Or
Do they support the google marketplace
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

Using ads is an alternate way to generate revenue on an app, almost exactly like running ads on a website (but not have as an actual full time business for instance).

If the ad is within an app the money goes directly to the developer.

I see thanks for the answer
Around how much do devs ake from in game ad revenue
and do they get revenue from rooted and ad blocked phones

That all depends on the popularity of the app as well as the placement. I know there are several apps that place banners right about a "submit" button, so people with big hands may accidentally hit the add.
Yes, they get revenue from rooted phones. It's the application that is generating the revenue. But who knows, maybe the new Android Licensing feature may reduce this?

Ya was curious about all the ads I've seen some in the free games some in horrible locations and others in better locations others with none

Angrybirds!

This is under the dev part of the forum because I was going to see if someone could unpack the angrybirds.apk and remove the ad's from the game or if someone could post a early release download before the ad's were implemented. I love this game and I don't want to wait for Rovio to produce a non ad version...anyone?

AdFree, one of the best apps for a rooted phone.
That is stealing!!! Ads are there to supports the developers hard work! They deserve to make money and honestly they are even letting you download it for free, so either you wait until there is a paid version or just dont play at all.
You can just put your phone in airplane mode and the ads won't pop up.

You consider that stealing?....not really since they released the game without ads and then made ads for people to click on which I will never do and if you wanted to really think about "stealing" consider yourself a thief since you hacked your phone and are using apps that aren't approved from the manufacturer and running "illegal apps"...so w/e dude..I've been downloading music and apps off sharing websites like rapidshare since I was like 12 dude...they are stealing from us. These things shouldn't cost as much as they do ie: windows os and microsoft office its just ridiculous and everything else in the world and if that's what you think, like I already said you shouldn't root your phone.

You're not furthering any cause by being cheap. Also rooting one's phone is not piracy. Voiding your warranty won't land you in jail.
Didn't mean to cause such an uproar. The only reason I mention adfree is because you can download it straight from the market. And no you are not stealing the game is free. Period. Like someone said putting your phone into airplane mode gives you the same effect. I am not taking anything from the devs if there is no paid version alternate.

Do Developers get paid for selling apps on ANDROID market?

Ive noticed apps on the Market that says, FREE (with ADS) and also PAID / Pro Version of the same app (for a fixed price lets say £3.00)
Now ive noticed the count on download apps for a app that is £3 to be 250.000 > downloads ... which means £750.000 has been paid into the market just from this single app ?????
How much would the developer of this app see from the £750.000 that has been made? And am I also right that ADS on their software also let the developer gain money??
Seems to me you can earn a lot of money for a well populated app... ???
You answered your own question. Developers SELL (obtain money for their product) their apps. Free apps that include ads, the developer also gets money. It's just like youtube videos.
Surely Google must take commision as well??
Yeah, that's the goal
But face it, people are cheap...even for a $0.99 app! And that "super duper, can't live without it app" is all so elusive.
So developers will put out a limited or crippled version of their app for free in hopes that people will buy the full version.
Oh yeah Google takes their cut; it's pro-rated on the number of app sales you have.
Lookiing closely at other apps and focasing on one partiuclar app called Fotmob which I have purchased. It is a really good app that is for any football supportors out their giving details of a list of attributes such as, Live Scores - Fixtures - News - and Table..... Its probably the best football application Ive bought.
Now focasing on a a certain point on the development part of the app
1) Live Score's ... Gives a list of live playing games and their score line next to it. - Am curious on where the data comes from? Surely it isnt edited As games are played because that would be practically impossible to keep up to date therefore it must use a similar command such as a Fetch_arrey syntax. Now where would the user of FOTMOB Fetch the data from?? it must be a reliable known source such as BBC SPORTS / SKY SPORTS to keep its app up-to-date during the live games??
Is that right?

It's not as black and white as that.
Firstly, you'd have to be an brilliant developer to get 250k+ downloads from a paid app. If you see an app like that, 9 times out of 10 it will be a company, not a single developer.
Secondly, 250k downloads is the amount of times an app has been downloaded, not the amount of times people have paid for it. e.g., around 40% of those downloads will be from people who refunded.
and lastly, Google take a ridiculous amount of money from you for each sale.
For example, my app sells for £2.00, but google takes £0.60 of that. It might not seem like a lot but it mounts up quickly.
So, 250k downloads isn't as much as you think if you start to look into it (but, it's still a hell of a lot for a single developer to get!!)
Well said Mellus.
And some of these so-called "great" apps are just fancy front ends pulling data off the net or a RSS feed.
As you might gather, I do not have a lot of respect for "this" (or "self"...programmer humor) type of developer.
P.S. if you don't get the programmer humor, "self" is Mac Objective C's "this" pointer.

You make $1,500 off how many apps? How many installs. Free apps or paid?
Also, could someone comment on what's required to get started? I know there's a $25 dev fee, and I've read all the help text on the publish site.
What do most devs do for a website to link to in the market? Does Google offer anything? Use Go Daddy? What?
What do you use to create the graphics required for the market?
Other tips?

Yeah I'm just getting into app development as well. I've currently got an ADWTheme out on the market for $0.99, and I make ~$0.69 per sale. There is really a ton of potential for profit if you get into individual app development as long as you can make stuff that people want. When I first released my theme I was making ~$10 a day off of it. after a month or so it's died down to ~$2.5 - $5 daily, but another factor is that I haven't updated it in a while haha. If you can manage to keep all of your apps up-to-date and appealing, you will do well.
If you are really interested in developing applications for android I would recommended watching these videos: http://marakana.com/techtv/android_bootcamp_screencast_series.html They've seriously helped me out a LOT getting off the ground

I would recommend Adobe Illustrator more than Photoshop for making graphics, at least it's what I prefer.
1. Make it look pretty
2. Make it fart
Yeah, nice LOL. Hey, if it sells, it sells. Wish I could write an app that sells thousands
I'm only a few months into development though, so it's "learn something new everyday" process. As the coding skills build, so will the quality of the apps....and hopefully sales.

Don't know why it's so difficult to answer a simple question.
70% goes to the developer, the remaining 30% is distributed to the cell carrier (if the carrier is authorized to receive fees for apps purchased on the market.)
Wikipedia explains it in such a way that even the most simple minded of folk can understand. It sounds like a few of you should read up on that, as opposed to providing vague, meaningless "answers".

Android Antivirus

There is a new study by AV-test concerning the effectiveness of Antivirus products on detecting malware and viruses on Android phones. The results are given in the following link:
http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/android/
I have used the AVG antivirus pro for quite some time but it was draining my battery considerably as shown by the BetterBatteryStats app. After reading the results by AV-test website I uninstalled it and installed the AVAST antivirus which gave better detection rates. Now battery life is much better and things are smoother, using an AV with better detection rates.
Just wanted to share it in case others have had similar battery drain issues with their AV or were wondering how effective their AV is.
I use Avast on my Note and AVG on my tab 7.0
I don't see/feel much of a difference in any way
Furthermore i use LBE on both, i feel much better
controlling the authorisations and behaviour of apps.
Antivirus apps are useless on Android. Why don't you people listen when everybody who knows tells you that ? Even Android reps said it. So forget about antivirus apps and better take care what you install on your devices.

Even better...Don't be so cheap and you won't have to worry about it.
No warez - no worries. (Buy the app! Dont't be a cheapskate! )
Use a firewall and apps like LBE and PDroid that can block unnecessary permissions.
What worries me more than a virus is a warez-app that might delete everything in sd-card on first run.
We don't care much about modify/delete permission, do we ?
Why would you even want warez on android when the average price for an app is below $5 ???

common sense should always prevail, even on the app store - but saying that it is ALOT less likely to get malware from the appstore than warez
Some people don't have a way of purchasing apps because the google play store has restrictions in some countries. Let's not generalize people who use warez.

Exactly. I don't have a credit card and I don't like being charged for using a pre-paid card and being obligated to charge a card with at least 20 euro's so I can buy and app every once in a while. Whenever I find an app I want to buy I'll check all resources to see if there's another way to purchase the app but if there's not then I'll probably get it elsewhere.
That to me is one of the biggest flaws (and maybe even the only one) of the market. There are so many safe payment options these days and still Google sticks to credit cards.
I don't have credit card either, but there's always an option for every app except games. And angry birds and some other freeware are the only games I have.
Instead of using warez Root Explorer, you can use File Manager, instead of using warez TB, there are 3-4 more app combined will have all the functionality of TB.
I've got Avast, Lookout and Prey on my phone, and I don't have any battery or performance issues.
And just because paid apps aren't available to you, doesn't make downloading them for free "okay" in the eyes of the authors or Google.
To a certain extent, you can also use GetJar and SlideMe as alternatives, I assume that there's others.
There have been several cases of malware finding its way onto the marketplace, often disguised as perfectly reasonable applications, so burying your head in the sand and saying "but they say it's not a problem!!1!" is not an ideal solution.

Banner ads! !!!

We all hate them, lets face it. We are not even warned of them.
I have a 'free keyboard ', no mention of ads.
It bombards me but I don't want to wipe it.
What I did was use J rummys pro app which has a handy feature called 'auto start manager' . This showed the app had a radio reciever, for no reason. I switched it off and bingo no more banner ads. Ad away won't stop them. This will. Hope it helps.
P.S I don't mind ads IN apps but hidden in the notification bar?? No thx.
PPS.. just checked data for the week that keyboard was putting ads up. It used 700 Kb in 6 days. That's theft in my book, as it never mentioned it. Thank God I don't pay U. S. rates

I completely agree with the rejection of ads. Alot of the time we are spied on to produce marketing results and targeted ads. As for developers getting paid and the ads being no harm to the user, I pay for my internet subscription, I do not give the authority to any app or ad or developer to waste my money downloading this ****.

I read customer review at least 10-15 of them on play store(if it has issues with adds/anything somebody will definitely post it there), before installing an application.
Next I check for the permissions required by the app...If it looks unnecessary then I refrain to install that application (I mean since when a simple live wallpaper required data access??)

For most of the Add supported applications you have an add free version available on market, either pay it once and buy the adfree/pro version of the app or keep paying in small installments as ur data charges to fetch that ad and get annoyed as well with those ads(I wonder how much data it takes to fetch one add, not more that 10-15Kb???)
Well which one is a wise choice you do the math!!

This one had no permission I could see & used @600kb per week with different ads, some I do not want people seeing on the front of my phone. I pay for apps. This did not say it was add supported. Not all devs are upfront. They want this crap in to spy so they can sell lists to others of what they gather. People are right to be posses when they step over the line.

Which Ad network is generating more revenue with Push,Icon and Smartwall

Hello Friends,
I want to use different ad network for Push,Icon and Smartwall in an app. Anyone can suggest me which ad network generating more revenue with specific ad.
Thanks,
I would not use push ads. They are recognized as malware by some AntiVirus programms. There will be negative comments.

Google take the Push Ads like malware, and is removing apps from Market...
My recommendation: use non intrusive ads generally, or if you have the posibility (a game for example), use in-app payments and TapJoy like ad network.

- Many Ads type avaible(more Ads type than any Other Platformi have seen) , Banner , Notification , Splash Screen , Entry & Exit Ads & much More , Ads are 100% Customizable , Text Color , Size etc ... -
- Ads are also avaible in HTML Format -
- Highest Revenue , i have tested Admob , Airpush , StartApp , StartApp sucks , AdMob is good if you have many Click , Airpush & Start app have somes "Strange Problems" about statistics from my Experience ...(no Comments) & less Ads type avaible than LeadBolt -
- Nice & Complete Dashboard -
- Full Support/Help , they Answer & solve your problems Quickly -
If i had to make a Classment : 1) LeadBolt , 2) Airpush 3) AdMob , 4) StartApp , this is what i think Sincerely , many of them Scam you but i am satisfied with LeadBolt for the Moment , if you want to give a Try , its Here : http://leadbolt.com/developers_signup.php?ref=10050243

Hello @m4manish8248, you can have a look at Pollfish. Pollfish provides a new interactive monetization method for mobile apps, delivering surveys instead if ads. Each completed survey through your app pays minimum $0.30.
In my experience, Adsota is good
I have great experience in Push, Icon, and Smartwall with Adsota and its eCPM is good.
You can find it by googling "ads.appota".
Best of luck, man.
Adsota for the win
its eCPM with Push, ICon, and Smartwall is good. You can find it by googling "ads.appota"
You can also try video ads with Teads. We offer great CPM's, ad units created with the user in mind, and premium advertisers only. You may be thinking why haven't you heard of Teads before. Well the reason is because we just moved into the app space, and currently beta testing our SDK. During this phase, each successful integration will be compensated for.

Thanks!
