GPS Tether - Desire Themes and Apps

So I was playing around with this GPS tether app. But I didn't manage to get it to work..
I was able to start the app and the GPS started working and got coordinates and everything seamd fine on the phone. I could not however not get access to it from my computer. I Guess GPS Tether is actually just an gpsd. so I used telnet to port 2947. I Got connected but I did not get any data, all i got was an "GPSD" showing now and then..
I'm running MCR r6.
Anyone got this working?
My reasons for wanting this is the ability to use any GPS app on my computer and the phone acting as an GPS device(using TCP-COM). and not having to buy an GPS device. And it would be very cool!

I have now managed to get data with telnet.. but when using an NMEA gps program, it doesnt seam to work, like GPSCommunicator :/ (using TCP-COM)

[Q] Wifi Tether, CyanogenMod,Froyo Rooting ?'s

Hi All,
First of all Wirless Tethering, I have One click Rooted my epic, and installed the wifi tether app but am not able to transmit signal (other devices cannot detect my wifi transition). In other words it’s not working. Do I have to install a specific kernel for this to work? and if so where would I get it?
Secondly, CyanogenMod and Froyo. Are they available for the Epic yet?, where, if not when?
Finally, Rooting, is there any way to tell that my device is perm-rooted? I want to make sure the rooting was successful even though it should be because my phone restarted like the directions said it would.
Thanks Much, p.s. I just left apple/att for epic/sprint so I don’t know all the terminology, please explain in detail Thanks!!
No cyangen mod 6 yet, or any roms yet, however roms will be coming real soon.
As for checking root try using an app that requires root like titanium backup.
For wifi tether, what version are u using?
Sent from my Epic 4G
for the Tether im using 2.0.5-pre8 istalled via tAttachAPkInstaller. I found this in the forums and people claimed to have success with it. The tether app in the marketplace said it needed a special kernel for it to work, any idea on where to get that and how to install new kernels?
To check root just type "su" in terminal and you should get "#" prompt.

Ur using the right wifi tether app, I use the same and it works fine for me. Idk why its not working for u.

Wifitether is probably working, it only broadcasts AD_HOC mode, which a lot of devices won't pick up. Make sure your Wifi drivers are updated and you are using a computer (not a p2p or DS).
I checked the root by installing titanium backup and it wen smoothly, but this damn tether app is driving me craZY! i have uninstalled and reinstalled the whole proccess and nothing works.... when i first start the tether app the download goes from 0 to .4 kb and the upload goes from 0 to .1 and then bot go back to 0 and thats it...... no other phones or computers have been able to see my signal... anything in the settings might be messing me up?? maybe diff chann?? im currently broadcasting on Chan 11.... even when i use bluetooth to connect it said paired but not connected....WHAT IN THE HELL BOBBY !!!!! i needs some helps
I had the same problem with wifi tether until I updated the wifi drivers on my PC. In my case I could see the network "androidtether" but attempting to connect caused the NIC to timeout requiring a disable/enable to get going again.
Still waiting for someone to get wifi tether working in access point mode. That's one thing I'm really going to miss from my Evo when I switch tonight.
I know its not wifi, but the pdanet tether application has been working great for me on the Epic. Its in the marketplace and can be installed without root. It does USB/Bluetooth, but not wifi.
OK i tried the PDAnet app but i cant seem to pair a friends iphone 4 with my device... i turn on blue tooth then pair then turn on the app and try to connect/repair but it keeps saying "paired but not connected" any settings i have to mess with on this app or the iphone 4 to make this work?
Thanks much for the helps.

I don't think the iPhone's bluetooth supports bluetooth DUN profile, that's why it didn't connect. iPhone's wifi supports ad-hoc wifi though.

has anyone figured out how to get Wireless Tether App on CM7?

hey everyone, I LOVE cm7 and stock android, but I use my phone to tether more than anything else and I need a solid tethering solution. My problem is that Wireless Tether app doesn't work with CM7 (at least last time I tried it) and the built in tether doesn't seem to work for me, (broadcasts but I don't get any internet connection)
Does anyone know of a way to Fix wireless tether app or why the built in one isn't working for me?
use barnacle tether, its free. but if the default settings arent working then go into the barnacle settings and click the "skip-wpa supplicant" or something like that. if it didnt work the first time it should work then
Thanks! I'll try that
I use the built in tether quite often on CM7. I am running rc3 right now and haven't had a chance to test it out but it has worked on the last 4 nightlies I've run.

the reason why the built in tether does not work for you is because you either used a wireless tether app or you have one installed. what you have to do is you must uninstall all wireless tether apps you have and then you must reflash your mod and obviously reboot once you do that it will be working for you. trust i just had this problem and i did a lot of research on it and i actually figured this out today and it worked. so give it a try and let me know how it goes. ^_^
would love to say this is the problem but it isnt
has something to do with dhcp, i can connect wirelessly to the phone np but wont get an internet connection because the phone decides to flake out and not assign an ip address for my laptop.
I tried to connect it earlier and it didnt work but i left it connected. I walked away, came back 10 minutes later and finally got an ip address and internet on my laptop. so either it just takes its sweet time assigning an ip or its tempermental
all good here
hi,
of no real help, but I am using CM7 stable and mine works without issue.
CM7 Final here and it works fine for me. Like others suggested, try wiping and reflashing.

[Q] GPS for N2E

So with no bluetooth, anyone have any ideas on how to get GPS on our N2E's (rooted with touchnooter)?
Would a USB GPS receivers work such as a GlobalSat BU-353
Appreciate any feedback, I'm on a mission
We don't think there's bluetooth so it's got to be wifi tethering
I have been trying to use gpstethering app but it doesn't get an ip address. The one time it did, the NT said it was receiving but the data was not updating. The app developer (compton software) doesn't respond.
For gpstethering app, you need to see the address when you pull down the notification window.
I installed a toggle gps app for the NT, then one to allow mock locations.
I am also trying to see if I can feed it serial data as it has serial pins behind the sd card.
Is there such a thing as gps tethering? I mean, GPS has tethering and you just connect to it ad-hoc? What brand of GPS is that?

Any Android device with a built in GPS can do this.

bluetooth tethering - gmail app doesn't work

Hi.
When i use bluetooth tethering from my phone to Nexus 7, i can use most of the apps (facebook, newsreader, browser, etc.). But some of them, like gmail and few news apps, don't recognize that the Nexus is connected to the internet. How can i fix this? Anyone having the same problem?
There have been many posts about BT tethering and how certain apps don't work with it. I think I saw where people are having problems with Google apps and Play. Some apps just look for wifi or data and will connect, but not transfer data on BT. Only solution for those apps would be a wifi tether as far as I know.
Its got to be hit or miss with this bluetooth tethering. My gmail works just fine. In fact, I have yet to find an app not working. Streaming Pandora right now too.
I did have issues with a few music apps when I first started to BT tether but fixed those. Those were apps that used, or had an option to use BT. I just installed an app from the store and thats working.
Have you tried to unpair and pair again?
Is there an advantage of tethering via Bluetooth vs wifi? If the battery drain on the phone is slower then I can see a huge advantage.

i get a better battery life.
In my house, my wi-fi is weak in my bedroom, so I have my old nexus s near the door and that acts kind of like a repeater for bluetooth internet. Cant do that with wifi tethering. (my n7 drops the house wi-fi often)
For streaming music and stuff, my BT does just fine, i get about 1.75mbps up and down so it does pretty good for what I use it for.
At work, I dont have wifi, so i tether with wifi since my phone is on a charger all day. Only reason for this is the N7 will auto connect to my hotspot where BT, i have to go in and check the use as internet option every time I go out of range.

Why does every android phone want WiFi on when using maps or navigation?

I would think the GPS and a network connection would be good enough to triangulate where you are. I'm tired of the nag screen. I tried to Google for an answer but didn't find anything that exactly answered my question. Maybe when Google mapped out street view, they were also sniffing for Wi-Fi access points, and their names with locations? Just a theory.
Mine will work with Wireless off. Just tried it. Location settings to just GPS, Wifi turned off, map worked perfectly. Didn't try to navigate, but it should be the same.
Mine works fine without WiFi. It asked me once and I skipped it and it hasn't showed again.
Maybe because each WiFi router has the ability to send its location. If you were in a building without GPS signal you could still have location.

Yeah I know you can skip it, but if the program senses you're on a mobile network, and the GPS is on, I don't know why it still wants to have Wi-Fi on.
Just did a test with a couple mapping apps. If I am in an airport or mall without WiFi on it can't tell which store or gate I am at. With the WiFi on it can tell exactly what store or gate I am near. Maybe they use WiFi to pinpoint. Oh and I did have GPS on at all times but without the added WiFi location it was either not good enough signal or no GPS signal... Who knows maybe they are just watching us.

I think it's just that WiFi will always be more exact than data. You're accessing the Interwebz through one point rather than through your carrier.
Yeah but you're not connected to anything on Wi-Fi, it just has to be on.
There's a database of found access points out there. Your phone can triangulate its position far more accurately if it uses the available wifi access points to do so, especially indoors. Like oscar said, it doesn't need to be connected to wifi. It only needs wifi activated in order to "see" what access points are nearby.
