Why does every android phone want WiFi on when using maps or navigation? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I would think the GPS and a network connection would be good enough to triangulate where you are. I'm tired of the nag screen. I tried to Google for an answer but didn't find anything that exactly answered my question. Maybe when Google mapped out street view, they were also sniffing for Wi-Fi access points, and their names with locations? Just a theory.

Mine will work with Wireless off. Just tried it. Location settings to just GPS, Wifi turned off, map worked perfectly. Didn't try to navigate, but it should be the same.

Mine works fine without WiFi. It asked me once and I skipped it and it hasn't showed again.
Maybe because each WiFi router has the ability to send its location. If you were in a building without GPS signal you could still have location.

Yeah I know you can skip it, but if the program senses you're on a mobile network, and the GPS is on, I don't know why it still wants to have Wi-Fi on.

Just did a test with a couple mapping apps. If I am in an airport or mall without WiFi on it can't tell which store or gate I am at. With the WiFi on it can tell exactly what store or gate I am near. Maybe they use WiFi to pinpoint. Oh and I did have GPS on at all times but without the added WiFi location it was either not good enough signal or no GPS signal... Who knows maybe they are just watching us.

I think it's just that WiFi will always be more exact than data. You're accessing the Interwebz through one point rather than through your carrier.

Yeah but you're not connected to anything on Wi-Fi, it just has to be on.

There's a database of found access points out there. Your phone can triangulate its position far more accurately if it uses the available wifi access points to do so, especially indoors. Like oscar said, it doesn't need to be connected to wifi. It only needs wifi activated in order to "see" what access points are nearby.

I am not quite sure what you are looking for, but the short answer is "no". Wifi is a short range wireless access method, typically 802.11g or 802.11b used to connect devices to the internet. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi
GPS is "Global Positioning System", a series of 24 or so satellites in orbit above the earth that provide precise timing signals that can be used to locate a received within a few meters. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System for details.
There are some applications that use the IP address of a WiFi signal to provide rather coarse location information.

Thanks for reply ....I was wondering whether A wrong GPS settings may affect Wifi CONNECTIONS as both GPS and Wifi use someform of data connections.......
You are talking about GPRS, not GPS!!!!!!!!!!
The GPRS and WiFi are on completely different frequencies.
NO, GPRS settings wouldn't effect WiFi.
However I think what you might really mean is modem settings and yes, if you don't configure the modem correctly then both WiFi and GPRS data wouldn't give you internet.

That's right, and on an airplane, the stewardesses will make you turn off a passive GPS receiver, but PDAs, PCs, phones, and some mp3 players are on generating bluetooth and WiFi signals all over the place.
Ignorance of technology... where a basic understanding should be in order.
I don't notice any difference between gprs and wifi, you can use both to go on the net,i don't bother using wifi .(risks being a butthead)
Would it be possible to modify/rig a gps antenna to boost the recieved wifi signal?
No. Completely different frequencies and totally different antenna. aGPS does speed up your gps precition though becouse it uses the mobile phone poles to calculate your location in the same way your phone would use the satellites, except much faster because it's closer and in better range. So... Phone towers can help locating you (but still doesn't help GPS) and GPS can't help WiFi or mobile connection because of different frequencies and thus different antennas.

Many problems with my GPS but never with Wifi.
Anyway, these two are totally different.
Sometimes Navigation Apps will prompt you to enable Wifi to lock in to your current location faster. It is understandable to enable it. Turning off Wifi will not hold GPS capabilities down. at all

%LOCN (Net Location) Is wrong

Morning guys n gals
So Im trying to set a location setup through tasker, but I have noticed this problem with google maps as well. My point is, with wifi on, and connected to my home router, my phone thinks I am living a few blocks up the road. Is there any way I can set something, either in my router or phone, to tell it that I am at my address, when connected to this wifi?
Thoughts on this:
GPS has nothing to do with it, when its enabled and outside its spot on
Phone towers have nothing to do with this, the phone tower thinks I am somewhere else unrelated
Its purely based off wifi, and the 'accuracy' bubble is outside my home range
Thanks people

GPS (No data connection, no directions)

Well I took a trip today and decided to try out the gps. Google navigation uses the internet connection to find everything. What does this mean? You have to an internet connection when you start. After you get your directions you are good to go. I even tried putting in the address, no connection no directions.

Were you outside with a clear view of the sky?
For those who do not have a data plan on their xoom, have you tried GPS navigation while tethered to their smartphone? Just curious how well this might work.

Any data connection appears to work. Once you have the directions you should be good, but hope you don't need to change anything. I understand if you are trying to search for something using data, but i even put in the address and it still wouldn't work.
Have any of you tried the route caching? Say if you plan a route while still connected to your wifi, with gps lock and then take it to you car, does the route stay?

The route stays. You just can't change it or start a new one till you get into a wifi zone again (or tether from your phone).
guys, xoom uses A-GPS....Assisted GPS, assisted by the cellular towers to find your location. you need data.
GPS works fine with my device. Picks up my location immediately after opening Maps.

GPS seems to have stopped working

Hey all,
I'm on vacation and Google navigation tracked me all the way to my destination like a boss.
Now that I'm here, my GPS thinks I'm in my home city, and won't move... I opened up GPS test and I'm only connected to 2 satellites.
My phone seems to get a decent location fix.
I'm wifi tethering to my TF.
Any idea what's going on?
Same issue. GPS icon appears but doesn't blink and just stalls.
Gps test - clear agps - update agps. Fixed the issue for me.

GPS location comes from several sources.( see your settings). One source is GPS, however if the fix is not great as when you just turn on TF and in a mew location, it will use the WiFi router location which is actually a lookup online that is set once and fixed. If the WiFi location for your phone was established and recorded at the online site while at home ( most likely the case) then the TF will read that and think it is home. Go to settings and turn off use wifi location.

+1 granted the wifi location is faster but if that router is registered to somewhere else (if you just moved or bought a used router online) then it'll say your there and tale a lot longer to get a lock.

If your wifi router location is wrong due to the situations mentioned above, you can have it reset by contacting "skyhookwireless".
No-go. Clearing the AGPS made the icon for GPS totally disappear, and refuse to appear again until a hard reboot. Even then it still just stalls. Trying a rom different from Prime to see if that might be the cause.
Has ANYONE else had issues like this? The GPS worked for a while but now totally fails.

Looking for a way to block specific WiFi signals.

I live very close to a hotel which has multiple SSID's that keep interfering with my ability to stay connected to my router.
I've tried hard coding a static ip on the phone, adding the mac address to router, even went as far as creating a separate unhidden network just for the phone. So far, nothing has worked.
So i was thinking that maybe there's a way to have the phone ignore certain signals, lock on to a preferred one or use WiFi but turn off the scanning feature. The only problem is that I haven't been able to find any settings or Apps that will allow me to do it.
So, if anyone has any ideas or suggestions as how, or if, I can make this work, I would greatly appreciate it.
I'm using a Droid 2 Rooted with 2.3.3 and have a Netgear N750 router.
BTW - none of the computers in the house are having this issue.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
So, are you saying the phone constantly tries to leave your home wifi in favor of attempting to connect to the hotel's?
Yes, unless I'm within about 5 feet of my router, the hotel's signal makes the phone keep dropping and reconnecting over and over again.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Are the hotel's hotspots not WEP secured? That is so odd. If they're unsecured hotspots go over to the hotel and tell them to get their sh*t in order. Otherwise I'm out of ideas, sorry.
No, they are secure. WPA2 as is mine. I don't connect to them. My phone just detects them, drops my connection and tries to connect to them. So that leaves me with no connection and having to use 3G.
But there may be an easier solution to this. After spending a few hours on the Netgear site, it turns out that there is a bug in their firmware that causes signal strength fluctuations. They said a new release should be available in a few weeks.
In the meantime I've changed the channel on the router to auto select which seems to be helping.
I do appreciate you taking the time to assist.
Thanks!
Scott

Glad there's at least some kind of work around, wish I was of more assistance.
Having a similar problem with a samsung galaxy sii - current internet configuration is through AT&T U-Verse with built in Wireless G router in there Gateway. tried adding a Netgear dual band N router to my network and with the netgear's 2 wifi signals on then my phone just constantly goes into scanning mode and keeps trying to connect between the 3 - things work fine with the wifi turned off in the new netgear kind of defeating the purpose of me installing it - was hoping to have the phone use one of the N signals..
Block bt openzone connection pleaseee!
Desperately need an app for this? Is it not going to be possible for a way to block certain wifi signals because I'm actually going to rip next doors BT openzone router out of the wall and get a hammer to it! My HTC desire hd is insistent on connecting to its poor signal over our excellent one and the worst part is that you can't actually access the network unless you pay BT for a user account! Grrrr.... Please help
Try to connect the network you dont want, then go to wifi management in settings. Long press on the network you dont want and hit forget network. Then your phone shouldnt automatically connect to it unless you tell it to.
