By any chance is the procedure for posting an apk just
being:
-able to have root access to an android phone
-and 2 using something like say Root Explorer to copy it and extract it from
the system, or folder where it sits?

After installing new rom(s) we should install a file manager. Is there any way to install one by default, in order to reach the apk files at sdcard. (Any other solution is also appreciated.)

Srsly, delete it yourself before mods do and more member rage because you're simply not abled to use any of the 239087 fileexplorers from the market/preinstalled ones in almost every rom.

google for file manager apk and download it from the web
Thank you all for your nice (!) answers. I am aware of downloading an app from the market or can google for it too. What I have asked was to preinstall one in order not to loose time everytime for searching android market. If there is one preinstalled, why can I not see it? Where is the so called "file manager" hidden? If you answer it I will delete my thread and shoot myself to Pluton
Okay guys be nice... This is the kind of thing I hate when I log in first thing in the morning... A new guy getting his ass ripped apart for asking a question just because you don't like the question or because it's posted in the wrong forum... It's not necessary and it only depreciates the quality of the site...
Not ALL ROMs come with a file manager so it is a legitimate request. Albeit I wouldn't have opened a new thread in Development just to ask for it.
Adao File Manager is a good free file manager that can/should be included in EVERY ROM. I concur that chefs probably should include this since it's very small size-wise and is extremely functional.
That being said, it is entirely the chef's choice.
Now... This thread is located in the wrong section so I'm going to close it but I'm not going to delete it.

[Q] DAE have the Camara icon disappearing on applying Potatoman's Camera.apk-Mod?

First of all: hi everyone! This is my first posting on XDA o/
ITT I have a very specific question about applying Potatoman's Camera.apk mod, but, as I'm a freshman, I'm not allowed to ask it in the proper thread. The requirement to have 10 posts before being allowed to take part in the dev forums is a little over protective imo, but well...
About the issue:
I tried to replace the original Camera.apk with the modified version as described by Potatoman in the specific thread. However, as soon as I rename the original Camera.apk into Camera.apk.bak, the Camera application icon disappears from the application list. That might not be to bad in the first place, but putting the modified .apk into the /system/apps folder does not re-create the icon. So, I can basically put the modified .apk where it belongs, but I have no way to start the application.
Also trying to install the modified Camera.apk from the /system/apps directory does not work (says "installation failed" and seems to do nothing).
I have no clue what's making the icon disappear on renaming the .apk in the first place. Also I'm not sure if it is possible to create an icon link to the modified Camera.apk manually. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Here some additional facts that might be relevant:
CF-rooted
KF2 kernel + ROM
using ES File Explorer for r/w access to /system/apps and general file handling
reboots do not help...
oops
just noticed the sticky "If your thread can be phrased as a question, it belongs in Galaxy S II Q&A".
I wasn't aware of that when I started this thread. I just saw many threads with the [Q]-tag here and put mine here as well...
@moderation: please feel free to move this over to the Q&A forum (or to close it :I)

Exchange security bypassed in ICS

I did not create this as I found it for the Epic 4G. It was previously posted by jamesey in that forum. Here is a link to that thread:

I have been searching for a security bypass that would work for ICS since I got my A500. I wanted to be able to either use facelock or no lockscreen at all on my tablet. I also do not like my sys admin having complete remote wipe authority on my device much less having to have my entire device encrypted. These files bypassed all that.
I have tested this for the Tegraowner 4.04 ICS rom v160 and works thus far.
To install, unzip the attached file, and, using whatever .zip editor you have, open the ROM you are intending to install, go to the \system\app\ folder, and replace the Email.apk and Exchange.apk files therein with those from the attached file.
then . . . Flash that ROM in the normal sequence. (PS I used total commander on the tablet to make the edit to the ROM file, 7zip would not make changes to that particular ROM's zip file.)
Alternatively, you can do this without reflashing the ROM but it does not always seem to work perfectly. To do this, delete your exchange email account. Clear app cache for exchange. Make sure no device admins are seen in the system settings/security tab, then use root explorer (must fix file permissions using root explorer) or adb to add the files to \system\app\ folder. Then reboot and add the account.
Note, it will still ask you about the security imposed by exchange but not actually implement those security requirements. eg on my tablet, it indicated that my exchange had security requirements but did not say anything further and did not add the exchange server as a device admin in the system settings/security tab.
Lovin it. (goodbye touchdown email)

Replacing the stock apks via Root Explorer worked on my Transformer TF-101 with codename android on it. It froze, rebooted, and was fine, with security bypassed.

top that work on my ICS 4.0.4 HTC Desire :good:
Thank you!
This worked on Desire with sandvold ICS 0.15.0.1
Did not work on my Galaxy S3. I keep getting FCs for email and overall stability is degraded. Looking at the other threads for this, it may be because the stock rom is odexed? I may just pay $5 for an OWA viewer until someone can fix this for the S3.
Works perfect and is so much better than the stock Email app. I would really appreciate if you add a couple of features to this already awesome apk.
1. There is no option to set 'Out of Office Settings' from my phone while using this app.
2. Also, each time a mailer with pictures comes, I need to save settings for individual sender for automatic-picture-download-permissions.
If these two things can be added, it would be the best Email patch available. Thanks
Anyone tested it with cm10? Thank you!

Ok, i rebooted, and now i have two email apps in the drawer, one yellow and white icon and the other red and white. If i select the yellow and white icon, it says email has stopped. IF I use the red and white, i can setup email fine but security is still there. My guess is the i did something wrong while installed the new mail.apk

[Q] dhcpd.conf is read only

Hello all,
Apologies if this is not the correct way of posting this question , but it is my first post here.
I have been looking for a way to rename my android devices on my home Hub.
They all appear as android_[numbers] which i dont find very helpfull, on searching all day there are many sites and frums that have suggested amending the dhcpd.conf with a new hostname line, my issue here is that on my nexus10 and my HTC desire these files are both owned by root.
Both machines are rooted but when I open these files with a terminal emulator as root, they always open as read only.
Nowhere on any of these sites or forums does it say the files are read only.
What am I doing wrong?

Open the folder in something like root explorer and click on the "R/W" button near the top of the screen. This will allow editing files in the folder. Then long press on the file and open it for editing.

I think you can change your device hostname in developer settings, certainly a lot simpler than editing a root permission file.

Weird that anyone would need custom zip files - from a unknown source - when we have guides and confirmed files right here on XDA.
In checking the links out, I get directed to spam sites (those annoying 'virus detected' or 'you've won X' alerts that force you to close the browser) and asked for my Google account login.
Perhaps I am mistaken, but this doesn't seem legit.
