Skype on Wifi? - Droid Incredible General

Is there some way to "trick" skype into running over wifi instead of just 3g? It's annoying to have to turn off wifi and kill more battery when I have a perfectly good internet connection nearby. I remember there being tweaks like this available for the iphone and wondered if there's something similar available or in the works.
**Note: I wasn't sure whether to put this in the apps/themes section or development since it can fit in either, so I apologize in advance if there's any issue with this thread location

It should just work over wifi if you turn 3G off. Not sure what you mean about turning wifi off to use it on wifi?
Also, this would belong in general i don't know how this would relate to development at all...

If you had an Incredible on Verizon you'd know that they restrict Skype usage to their data network, and that when opening it you must first disable wifi. And it can relate to development because there might need to be a workaround that needs to be "developed", which should be easier with root access I'd imagine.

I do actually have an incredible on Verizon seeing as that's the only network for this phone...
I misunderstood your wording for switching on and off the mobile network and wifi network. Just booted up skype mobile and noticed the message you were talking about,
"Skype mobile does not currently work on WiFi and requires witching to a Verizon Wireless data network connection. This may affect other apps using a WiFi connection."
That's pretty lame. Haven't heard any workarounds for that so far.

Lol no I haven't, I downloaded it and used it once but since it doesn't support video I saw no real use for it.
Edit: Found some more information on the situation at hand - http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Verizon-Skype-Client-Apparently-Disables-Android-WiFi-107895

Thanks for the article. It sounds weird though about there being a glitch, kinda like the GPS issues on the pre plus with verizon. I don't get why the iphone can do would over both wifi and 3g but us android users are left in the dust. Hopefully this exclusivity expires soon and we get a fully functional client. So much for "Droid does" I guess

[Q] I'm having WiFi problems with Xoom.

I like pretty much everyone else has at least 1 months Verizon 3G coverage that I do not intend to keep. Especially since I have a Rooted EVO 4G with WiFi tether, and Sprints unlimited Data....
But for some reason the Xoom will not FIND my EVO 4G WiFi. A colleage in an opposite office has a device (iPhone) which finds and connects to the EVO 4G WiFi hot spot no problem, but not the Xoom. It fails to even see it !!
Anyone else had this issue (tethering Xoom to a Cellphone WiFi Hotspot)
Anyone have any idea's on how to fix it? I have tried security settings, changing SSID, changing WiFi channels, changing IP ranges etc etc. Nothing has worked so far
Please, search before posting.
The xoom cannot connect to an ad-hoc network, like from your evo. Check the thread regarding tethering with Bluetooth instead.
There may be a fix but I don't think there is right now.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I haven't read all of the posts on this to narrow down the exact reason, but I can tell you that the Xoom can connect to your EVO. I have been WiFi tethered to my EVO 4G since last Thursday using the stock Sprint application.
For what it is worth ... by the way my EVO is not rooted.
Having same issue!!!
I am not sure what to do I have a atrix and it wont recognize it either I am probably going to have to return it
can't tether it to my atrix either. crazy.

As stated earlier, unrooted Xoom devices are unable to connect to ad hoc wifi spots. A good way to test if your phone is an ad hoc devise just flip by Mc Donald's, if your Xoom can see the free hotspot your devise is emitting an ad hoc network. (PS3'S and other similar gadgets cannot connect to ad hoc)
I can almost guarentee it is not your Xoom.

I read pretty much read every post on WiFi tethering (The forums actually do a search for you when you type the title of your new thread) and I was not happy that they answered my question. They are all variations of the same subject, but not specific to mine...
As it goes I have fixed the Issue. All it took was re-downloading the WiFi Tether application from the Market place and all is working. No idea why the Xoom couldn't see the WiFi network and an iPhone could but it's fixed now. So Bye Bye Verizon
A WELL happy Xoom and EVO 4G owner - Android Rulez !!
So what should I do to get it to recognize my atrix?

In this order: try his method by redownloading the app, also try restarting the devices before the attempt. If this don't work verify that your atrix is not emitting an ad hoc network. If its not, exchange your Xoom.

Not having the same hardware might be the fundamental problem but this is what I suggest....
1) - Make sure you have super user permissions...
2) - Un-install and then re-Install WiFi tether... https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether&feature=search_result
3) - Start the WiFi tether app on your Atrix perhaps changing the SSID to something other than default, then search for the Hotspot on your Xoom.
Fingers crossed it will locate it, connect to it, and maybe it work...

You need an att tethering plan to use webtop.... I don't know what you are talking about. There is a reason why xda is becoming more and more irrelevant as time goes on and developers are choosing a different website. It's people like you guys who just need to one up other posters who are causing this. There are some great people on here, then there are you guys. That's the reason why the rootzwiki is becoming the new standard. Oh and I should sell my atrix cause I asked a question about webtop? That clearly means I have no idea what I'm doing right? I have read that webtop should work when you are on wifi, but that's just what I've heard since I don't use it. If you're trying to use it while on AT&T's data network then, yes, you need tethering but there are tethering and webtop hacks galore in the "noob" thread that is stickied at the top of the "General" forum.

Also, try not to take anything personally. This is an internet forum, just let it roll off your back.
Just looked over the sticky and it has a link to a cwm installable webtop file that I already have. Nothing about disabling att from verifying the tethering plan required to use the webtop on 3G. Webtop works fine on wifi... And before gingerbread, there used to be a way to get it to work without a tethering plan. That is why I asked this "n00b" question that nobody seems to have an answer for.

Have you tried the "Entitlement" mod (enabling tethering)? It should be the one right above or below the Webtop link.

No problem, hope you find something that works. Like I've said, I don't use it so I don't know what would actually work.
Also, like I've said, you can't take things personally on the internet, but if I can give some advice. Try to be more descriptive in your comments especially when starting an entire thread. Include things like what "mods" you have already used, and maybe include what ROM you're using and what resources you have already searched through for answers, you could even go as far as describing the steps you are using when encountering the issue. All of this helps the rest of us help you. Your original post "looks" like a "noob" question and that's like blood in the water for the sharks.

OP asked a valid question and didn't deserve to be noob-bashed. I have the same issue. I have done the "entitlement" hack using the SQLLite Editor to set the "Entitlement Check" field to "0", and I am able to use my Atrix as a mobile hotspot without a tethering plan.
However, when I attempt to use Firefox on the Lapdock while connected via 3G (WiFi off), a popup appears saying "Verifying AT&T account status for webtop...". Then, after a few seconds, it fails and another dialog pops up saying "The Firefox browser requires a Wi-Fi connection or appropriate data plan. Please use Wi-Fi or call AT&T Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500 to add the appropriate data plan to your account"
Any help would be appreciated.
Try this and see if it works. Make sure you have done the entitlement hack and while connected to the webtop turn on the mobile hotspot on your phone and then go into your networks and choose the tether apn.
I tried something in that nature and was browsing firefox on my phones data. I'll try again in the morning and see if that's what I did.

Question.
Is it considered tethering if instead of using the full browser firefox, that requires a tethering plan, to instead use a browser (such as Dolphin HD) INSIDE of the phone module app on the webtop... since it's actually using your phone's apps instead of firefox?
just a thought.

Thanks dmbrown81, that totally worked! I still get the nagging messages from the Webtop about needing a tethering plan, but if I just turn on WiFi Tethering while the phone is docked, Firefox will work fine! Brilliant!

Obviously that would never be detected, but ATT does consider it tethering. Total BS if you ask me, all the doc is is an external screen/keyboard/pad/battery, it is in no way a seperate system.
The odd thing is that while using a StarHub prepaid sim in Singapore on my unlocked ATT Atrix it doesn't do that check, only when I use my ATT sim.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Thanks that solution works
Thanks everyone for suggesting the "hotspot" trip. I am curious as to why this needs to be done is we are using the entitlement hack. Does anyone know why this is or is the just the way to get around having to pay twice for data? Also, have you guys noticed a big hit in your battery life when using the hotspot tethering? I'm just happy that this solution works because I got the lapdock just for this reason.
There is something in the ATT firmware that recognizes when the phone is using an ATT sim and disables data connections to the webtop environment. The whole time I was in Singapore using a StarHub Green prepaid sim my phone never did that "Verifying account blablablah..." when I docked the phone in my LapDock, as soon as I docked it I could start using Firefox.
An interesting note: the phone disables all data connections for a moment when it does this check. I noticed it because Pandora died on me one day when I was listening and I docked my phone. I watched the connectivity arrows on the H+ icon the next time I docked my phone and they went away for a few seconds just as that toaster notification popped up. Even with the Entitlement Mod this happens.
Hotspot tethering will kill your battery life, although that battery life is augmented by the lapdock. I'm pretty sure you can turn tethering off once you've started up Firefox and are browsing away. Don't ask me how I know, a little bird told me.
No, using apps inside the phone view isn't considered tethering. You can use the stock browser inside there without doing anything. If att calls using a non-stock browser tethering, pitch a fit and tell them to piss up a rope.
And regarding my snark earlier: I think a lot of the people who have been here for a while get tired of seeing threads like "Can I haz root on my phone OMG I'm a noob" when we remember discussing the same subject multiple times in the past. I know this particular question has been asked and answered before. I found it ironic that you were being chided by someone who had < 10 posts.
tl;dr - non-ATT sims work without mods, ATT sim data connection gets disabled, this has been covered.

There are a million ways to get around this of course: market hacks, downloading the apps from other sources, side-loading... they're included with most roms... blah blah blah.
Just bringing this to your attention in case you were trying to d/l it from the market and it's not showing up. Now you know why
Just checked the market and looks like you're right. No PdaNet. No Easy Tether. Can still get Easy Tether on Amazon's app store however.

Technically we agreed not to use these, but still. Getting around it is so trivial, and yes, this might trip up a few noobs, but chances are if you're that nooby you wouldn't have a need for, or even realize that, tethering is an option.
Add that all up, and it seems like the only thing this move can get you is bad PR/karma.
You may as well be "cool","allow" it, and play the "other carriers try to tell you how you can use your phone and limit your access to certain apps" card, cause it's happening either way.

I like that one better. Its not an adhoc connection like the tether apps, but an actual hotspot that your computer actively looks for and can become a preferred network. Its just kewler.

Really only applies on your phone, as in, the data your phone is using. Tethering is a whole new realm. Sprint can tell if you're tethering or using your phone, so if you have a large amount of data through tethering, they'll flag you for it.
I think they're putting limits on tethering plans now, somewhere around 5GB or so I thought.

They can make you pay for the use of *their* tether app, but I'd like to see evidence that they can tell if your using the likes of a rooted phone with Wireless Tether. I think of this situation the way I viewed using a wired/wireless switch off your home broadband ISP back in the day. For me, Charter only allowed one registered MAC address to the cable modem, and there was some FUD spreading around that you'd get "busted" for using a switch to provide service to multiple computers. Of course there was no way to tell unless they get really invasive. Similar deal here. Hopefully restrictions on phone tethering will seem just as crazy in a few years.
I'm using TWC isp over wifi right now & its not showing up? WTF how is it that its not showing up over wifi?
Edit. I see the one by open gradin. But not the one by Muller

It doesn't mean Sprint just has to lay back and take it from someone who's costing them money to have as a customer, tethering or not. They reserve the right to tell any of us to beat it.

I really dislike how the Nexus 4 can't do simple things well

Such as staying connected to my WiFi, or my cellular data connection, or being able to reliably turn Bluetooth on and off. Seriously, these are the things that should just work. On every other phone I've ever owned I've never had a problem with any of these things, let alone all three.

This happens every 10 minutes or so and it's driving me crazy. Also when skiing any type of downloading on my Wi-Fi I get awful speeds. If hardware problem until I change the router, but at least tell me what works. They are anxious to get the phone's SD reader to avoid confusion and leave this problem in WiFi. Just missing they release the next nexus without WiFi to avoid this kind of problem.

Seemed like phone was having issues staying connected to network, but it cleared up, so I'm guessing it was T-Mobile's issue.
Also, with Franco kernel and custom color settings and volume boost, this phone is near perfect.

I'm having the exact same problem with the connection having issues every two minutes, making games hard to play with connection errors. Are you certain it's a T-Mobile issue?

I have T-Mobile and my signal is rock steady. Call support and see if they are working on a tower in your area.

[Q] Constant Wifi drops at my wits end

Hello everyone first time joining xda; I have used the site a few times and I love it. I also created an account because of the wonderful community anyways; I seem to be having this really frustrating problem with my Verizon LG G2. I picked up the phone on black Friday and its been absolutely wonderful except for one issue, my WiFi drops signal constantly and I mean almost every 3-15 minutes but the catch is that I have used WiFi at my friends and by that I mean more than a one or two works great at theirs and not mine but at my house and it doesn't and I think this might be a router issue. But I have spent many hours trying to figure out what might be wrong it it helps my router is: Netgear model WNDR3700. I've tried just about everything and would like some smarter help. Thank you for reading!
Shameless self bump
First bump!
Having same issue but not as often.
If I use my htc sensation with vipers it's even worse. Even causing my router to reboot.
Se if u can extract logs from your router.

Maybe screenshot those and post them on here? Lol
My suggestion is to just get a new router. They're only 30 bucks if you get em used (I mean, NICE ones). I am somewhat router-savvy and I would recommend the D-Link DIR-655 as a replacement. It has OS-independent printer/HDD sharing, website URL blocking (great for blocking ads), time restrictions, logging, wireless N & good range... if you're lucky you'll find one in great condition for about $39 last I checked. Once I got one for $20 off ebay and it had some issues.. so don't do that I guess.
I know my suggestion doesn't directly answer your question but it will directly solve your problem. Hope this helps,

Thanks for posting but yeah all of those quick fixes I've tried also I checked for a router update and its up to date and I check the website its correct. The ****ty part is buying a new router is out of the question because I still live with my parents.

You're not using a static ip that is being used by 2 devices right? I did that when I first set mine up... I'm not the sharpest one.

Also, another dummy fix is checking which wireless standards you have selected. Surprisingly a lot of android phones are not compatible with independent Wireless-N, make sure you have set up a,b,g,n or b,g,n or even try straight g or straight b if those don't work. On top of that, try changing the wireless frequencies, that is very likely to be your problem.
