Replaced the stock 2GB miniSD w/ 16GB card. How can I manage where apps download? - Vibrant General

Hello all,
I just replaced the stock 2GB external SD card with a 16GB and transferred the movie over to the new 16GB card.
I thought all the apps that I'm downloading would be saving to the external 2GB SD card, but surprisingly that's not the case? I thought by default it would save to the external storage card first.
How do I manage where I want my apps and future downloads to be saved? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
All I see under settings -> SD card and phone storage -> (it shows all the info, but only gives me the option to unmount the storage on both internal and external cards.
Also on the very bottom of that screen it shows: "Application storage...Available space...1.50GB"
Is this a partition within the internal storage on the phone where all the apps have been getting saved to?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Basically the Vibrant gives u 16GB or space, 2GBs of this is for Applications an such, while the 14GB partition is for media (music, movies etc).
When you install applications currently they will install onto your 2GB partition. Once Froyo (android 2.2) hits you'll be able to select if you want the apps to install onto your SDCard.
Once the modding scene picks up a bit more I'm sure A2SD will be available and also a 2.2 port prior to the official one.
Hope this helps!

So basically right now we can't change the default settings of it saving to the partition space on the device itself? In my mind, "...hhmm there has to be a way around this...maybe?" LOL
I can't get the phone to mount on my PC or MAC. On the phone it shows as USB storage device connected and it also displays a window for me to mount or unmount....Nothing shows on the computer for me to be able to access it...hhmm
This is all so odd because my buddy has the old Galaxy i7500 and I'm able to plug his phone in and it mounts in seconds.
The only way for me to access the card is for me to use the SD adapter card and physically take it out of the phone every time..

If i replace the 2 gig sd card with avatar on with my 16 gig class 4 should i part it with a ext 4 or just format it all fat 32 ??? I was thinking just fat 32 the whole card since the apps default to the internal mem ..

Really? Not to be a downer guys, but why is this in the Development forum? Can we move this over to General or Q&A please. Once the Development forum starts getting flooded there's no going back.

I just reformatted it FAT32 all the way. Then I transferred both movie files of Avatar and it works perfectly.

Perfecto. Thank you!

Thanks for the quick responce iunlock im formatting now ...

Also, it's best to keep as much apps on the system memory as you can. Accessing data on the SD card is slower than from the internal memory.

No reason in creating an ext partition at this time since there is not much support currently for this kind of mod on the SGS. In the future i'm sure ppl will get this mod out there, but for the time being you should be good with Fat32.
Plus installing the apps on the internal mem is the best option for speed an such.

Available onboard memory for applications?

This phone has 8GB of memory (or 16GB for the other model). Can anyone tell me if all of this space is available for application installation? (excluding the space required for the system files etc)?
I thought I read somewhere that only 1GB was available for application installation while the rest could be used to store normal files like on the SD Card. If it is entirely available for application installation then I'm probably ok not upgrading the memory card as 8GB is plenty big enough for what I need. Even if it is limited to 1GB for application storage, this is plenty big enough for what I need.
TIA
1.8GB free for applications installation in the Galaxy S.
I assume the rest is used for storage space of user files like an extension to the SD card?
Correct.... It's an ideal dumping ground for Photos, Music or whatever takes your fancy.
I'm confused, after the 1.8gb where is the other 6.2gb?
The ~6 gb are called Internal SD card or something similar, and is available as storage for music, pictures or whatever you want basically.
Are you aware that with Android 2.2 (froyo) applications will be installable onto the memory cards.
yeah i never really put much on to the onboard memory...i install my apps onto the storage card

Pray tell how you are managing to install to SD Card as to install to other than internal memory you need Froyo on your system.

Strictly speaking, developers need to update their application before it can be installed onto the SD Card. I'm guessing a lot of the less maintained applications won't be updated and thus won't be able to be installed on the SD Card.
Not many applications fall in this area but I'm sure people have a few apps that work as is and haven't been updated for ages.

WP7 ate away my SD CARD!

So I tried using WP7 On hd2.
But I didn't like it as much as Android. So I reverted back to android. But guess what I only have 200mb on SD Card instead of 16gb. (I should have expected this I suppose)
Can anyone tell me how to restore my SD Card to 16gb? I am sure there are others who are curious as well.
Thanks
Try formatting the card, windows, winmo or android, try em, it might work.
Get an adapter, shove it in a camera and format it
cos wp7 creates an unknown format partition. use a partitioning program, see if you can delete the partitions (there will be two, one 200meg fat and one unknown format) then reset a new FAT32 partition for the full size.
Be careful in disk management, delete from the wrong disk and its hello to up-all-night-reinstalling-your-PC, hehe.
I've used geparted live cd...worked fine. You have to delete partition and re- format as any filesystem you want.

Use some common sense ffs, Read info before doing anything like this.
It CLEARY states that WP7 creates partitions on your card and anybody with half a brain would know to re-format card after using a different OS especially one that creates partitions.

While I agree that the OP is at fault for clearly not reading anything and just flashing (I read instructions and used a different SD card when I tried WP7 - it was VERY clear!!!), I don't see why you feel the need to be so offensive to him. That's just plain out of order man. Stop just dissing people. If you don't have anything constructive to say then just don't say anything.
This is a friendly forum. Be friendly.

Feel better about yourself after that?
Yup, I should have read about this before flashing but I had fun for a while and went back to Duttys Rom. However, I have 14gb of files and music on the card and a 200mb fat partition. Is there any way of at least retrieving the pictures and music before I reformat? Windows can only see the 200mb. Disk management shows the two partitions but won't let me delete the 200mb partition. Any suggestions?
I hope this guy doesn't treat his kids like that...."hey retard, go clean your room! It's the only way you'll learn"
The internet gives some people license to be morons unfortunately.
To the OP, I hope you get that fixed. If you find a way to fix it let us know which way worked for you in case we have to do the same thing to. I have a few SD cards but I don't want any of them to be rendered useless.
try using minitools partition wizard (home edition). delete both partitions so that each partition is displayed as a whole unpartitioned space and create a PRIMARY partition using fat32. your data was deleted when windows phone 7 was setting up for the first time. luckily i used another card but good luck
if you go bk to android leave a bit of space after when doing the primary fat32 and create a ext2 partition. its in the file system tab in the create partition bit

it wipes the card n formats it when win phone 7 first boots up.
Thanks everyone for their input. I managed to restore my SD Card. I am a happy android user. From my experience, I think android is far more stable than WP7. Android offers more versatility and customization. Again thanks.
Theres a fix for that just search
I couldn't find a way of saving the data so I lost it. Popping it in a camera formatted it perfectly. Won't be running wp7 again. Looks nice but too much hassle to get calendars etc.
To format the sd... put in the camera (mine for example is a nikon) and format it..
For me works well.
But I have another problem: in WP7 I have only some MB free.. so.. I can put in music if I have that little space?
My sd is 8GB...

Well so far I haven't been able to figure out the usb data storage method for wp7 if one even exists... so the only way you can put music and photos and other files onto wp7 is through zune.. if you try usb mass storage in magldr you will only see 200mb but through zune you can transfer files to your 8gb sd card capacity.

I had the same problem...
What you need to do is:
In Zune, go to 'Settings'. Then click on 'Phone'. Next, click on 'Reserved Space'.
Make the reserved space about 10%. This should give you about 6.5 Gb on an 8 Gig SD card. It also gives WP7 a bit of 'extra memory' to work with.
For a first release, this is an awesome piece of work. A few things don't work, but on the whole I'm impressed. I'm going to test it for a month to see how it performs.
The main functions work - Phone, text, e-mail, music, video. And nearly all of it is automatically set up. Correctly too.
Worked for me. Plenty of room for syncing via Zune.
Enjoy.......

A little confused by sdcard and external_sd

As the title says, I'm a little confused by the folder "sdcard" and the sub-folder "external_sd".
This is my first native Android device. I've been using Android on my HD2 for about 8 months now and I was fine with the "sdcard" folder actually being my sd card. Now, I've got internal memory of 16GB and that has an "sdcard" folder that my apps use to store stuff to the sd card, but they're not really storing anything on the sd card - it's a folder on the internal memory.
I'd ideally like to have internal memory and an sdcard folder that really is a sd card, so that when apps store things to "/sdcard" it does go to my sd card.
Can someone please clarify this for me?
Thanks
im not 100 precent sure on this but i think this is how it works.
thr tab has an internal non removable 2gb drove that is mounted as /
there is a internal non removable 16 gb drive that mounts as /sdcard ( /mnt/sdcard/ ) this is where your apps are installed.
then whaever external microsd card you insert gets mounted to /sdcard/external_sd/ ( /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/ )
. why its done like this is kinda stupid. apps like titanium backup you gave to type "sdcards/external_sd" as the backup folder if you want to put your backups on the microsd card since it thinks /sdcard is a removable device, which it isnt.
this is where i store pics vids and music crap.
also clockworkmod does seem to correctly put backups on the external card automatically.
heres a tip. create an empty folder on the external card called "THIS IS THE EXTERNALS SD" and likewise for the internal. that way when you are using a app or mounting as usb storage you can quickly and eaisly recognize what drive is what.
i dont know if tha answeres your question but i hope it helps.

Thanks Gophet. That's pretty much what I assumed, and it was specifically apps like Titanium and Launcher Pro that backup to the SD card that made me ask the question in the first place. Shame I can't set backup folders for everything!

Actually, the reason it is done like this is pretty logical.
Applications get stored in /data/apps (or /system/apps if they are system apps), and can use storage in /data/data. However, on most regular Android devices, the space in these partitions is quite limited, so if an application needs a lot more space (e.g. a game), it stores it's other resources where there is a lot more space and generally this in the sdcard. So many apps are hardcoded to look in /sdcard.
Since the GSM Tabs have 16GB of flash memory, it makes sense to have this space where it is going to be the most use, and that is going to be /sdcard because it is where most applications expect it to be.
If it didn't do this, you'd find that you would have to have a MicroSD card installed on the Tab in order for most applications to work properly, which is a nonsense when you have all that additional internal memory to play with.
Regards,
Dave
Cheers Dave.
That does make sense. I guess it's because I'm coming from a device where I only had about 70MB free space internally, so I needed an SD card, and was constantly moving apps over to it (if they would work there). I guess I need to rethink my ways and just use my SD card for media, with the "sdcard" folder being used for apps.

If you are referring to our beloved HD2 bud then why do you manually move apps? Just use a sd-ext partition, most the nand roms come with the support or you can flash a zip to enable it. You dont need to mess about with linux to create the partitions you can just use the one included in CWR, it creates a ext3 partition that works fine, ive been using it for ages.
Depending on the rom, the user data will either be moved to your partition or the partition will actually been seen by the HD2 as internal memory so our euro HD2 can actually have 1GB of internal memory.
I myself got a Tab recently and am loving it, its like the big brother to our HD2's
Hey did you notice how small the HD2 seems now?

I'm more than happy to move things to the SD card on the HD2. Titanium can do it in batches too, which makes life a lot easier. To be honest, I found a ROM that I liked a couple of months ago and I've just stuck with it. It's just a basic NAND ROM with no support for ext sd partitioning, but it's fine as it is. If I do ever flash a newer ROM to it then I'll probably stick with the same setup, to be honest. I'm a bit set in my ways
And yeah, it's funny you should say that about the size of the HD2. It used to feel quite large - a really good size - but after 1 day with the tab it feels like a matchbox in a giant's hand.

nope, that requires repartitioning so that the sizes are split differently in the internal memory...i don't think anyone cares about this as long as the phone supports 64GB external.... the method was used for reviving the superbricked phone a year ago on ICS smaller system partitions resulted in a successful booting rom but with less storage.
But is there any way for installing all app and games in micro sd like kernel perseus whick allow install all in microsd whatever app or game

I've had luck with the FolderMount, liked it and bought the full version. There's a thread for it in the themes and apps section
PS. You should open new threads in the right sections :good:
There was a mod on the S3 that swapped the internal and SD memory - i.e. it fooled the system in thinking the SD card was internal.
Give it time, im sure the mod will become available - you will probably need to root

AFAIK the trick was modifing the vold.fstab file in system/etc/ still i think its useless since the most space is set on internal sd and not the system swapping them makes your storage space even less than it already is...who wants that to happen ?
he can get a light ROM i've seen one in the forums calles biochemical TW i think not quite sure which is 800MB well stripped but still he can add what he needs only and not get to the crazy 1.5 GB system

[Q] Unable to move apps to external SD on rooted phone

Hi!
So yeah i have a rooted i9505
When i select the option move to SD card it loads about a minute and says its on the SD card
But its still on the internal phone memory (well sometimes a few mbs of huge GBs games.
I also tried Link2SD and created a second EXT2 partition on my sd card and it said everything was correct
But even after "linking" the apps and it says they are linked correctly its still on the internal memory
How can i solve this?
I also already formated the card in the phone itself

Well when i "Link" them to the ext sd partition and i look at downloaded apps or all apps it says 1 gb free
But when i look at "storage" it still says 1 gb free but the bar above shows almost about 1/4 free from 9.23 gb
So i think it maybe works but storage and apps still says its on internal?

and one game just dissapeared with Link2sd
i think thats why the bar shows less i cant find the game anywhere
Very strange
Edit
I rebooted the device after relinking in link2sd and now the dissapeared game is back in the list but now also the bar shows almost full so it was indeed because of the game
but i still cant get them on the partition while it says its there
