WP7 ate away my SD CARD! - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

So I tried using WP7 On hd2.
But I didn't like it as much as Android. So I reverted back to android. But guess what I only have 200mb on SD Card instead of 16gb. (I should have expected this I suppose)
Can anyone tell me how to restore my SD Card to 16gb? I am sure there are others who are curious as well.
Thanks

Try formatting the card, windows, winmo or android, try em, it might work.

Get an adapter, shove it in a camera and format it

cos wp7 creates an unknown format partition. use a partitioning program, see if you can delete the partitions (there will be two, one 200meg fat and one unknown format) then reset a new FAT32 partition for the full size.
Be careful in disk management, delete from the wrong disk and its hello to up-all-night-reinstalling-your-PC, hehe.

I've used geparted live cd...worked fine. You have to delete partition and re- format as any filesystem you want.

Use some common sense ffs, Read info before doing anything like this.
It CLEARY states that WP7 creates partitions on your card and anybody with half a brain would know to re-format card after using a different OS especially one that creates partitions.

While I agree that the OP is at fault for clearly not reading anything and just flashing (I read instructions and used a different SD card when I tried WP7 - it was VERY clear!!!), I don't see why you feel the need to be so offensive to him. That's just plain out of order man. Stop just dissing people. If you don't have anything constructive to say then just don't say anything.
This is a friendly forum. Be friendly.

Feel better about yourself after that?

Yup, I should have read about this before flashing but I had fun for a while and went back to Duttys Rom. However, I have 14gb of files and music on the card and a 200mb fat partition. Is there any way of at least retrieving the pictures and music before I reformat? Windows can only see the 200mb. Disk management shows the two partitions but won't let me delete the 200mb partition. Any suggestions?

I hope this guy doesn't treat his kids like that...."hey retard, go clean your room! It's the only way you'll learn"
The internet gives some people license to be morons unfortunately.
To the OP, I hope you get that fixed. If you find a way to fix it let us know which way worked for you in case we have to do the same thing to. I have a few SD cards but I don't want any of them to be rendered useless.

try using minitools partition wizard (home edition). delete both partitions so that each partition is displayed as a whole unpartitioned space and create a PRIMARY partition using fat32. your data was deleted when windows phone 7 was setting up for the first time. luckily i used another card but good luck
if you go bk to android leave a bit of space after when doing the primary fat32 and create a ext2 partition. its in the file system tab in the create partition bit

it wipes the card n formats it when win phone 7 first boots up.

Thanks everyone for their input. I managed to restore my SD Card. I am a happy android user. From my experience, I think android is far more stable than WP7. Android offers more versatility and customization. Again thanks.

Theres a fix for that just search

I couldn't find a way of saving the data so I lost it. Popping it in a camera formatted it perfectly. Won't be running wp7 again. Looks nice but too much hassle to get calendars etc.

To format the sd... put in the camera (mine for example is a nikon) and format it..
For me works well.
But I have another problem: in WP7 I have only some MB free.. so.. I can put in music if I have that little space?
My sd is 8GB...

Well so far I haven't been able to figure out the usb data storage method for wp7 if one even exists... so the only way you can put music and photos and other files onto wp7 is through zune.. if you try usb mass storage in magldr you will only see 200mb but through zune you can transfer files to your 8gb sd card capacity.

to restore back yours 16 Gb, you must reformat your SD with SDformater Windows application.

That is the problem. When I try to transfer just only a song Zune tells me that there is no enough space for the tranfer.

I had the same problem...
What you need to do is:
In Zune, go to 'Settings'. Then click on 'Phone'. Next, click on 'Reserved Space'.
Make the reserved space about 10%. This should give you about 6.5 Gb on an 8 Gig SD card. It also gives WP7 a bit of 'extra memory' to work with.
For a first release, this is an awesome piece of work. A few things don't work, but on the whole I'm impressed. I'm going to test it for a month to see how it performs.
The main functions work - Phone, text, e-mail, music, video. And nearly all of it is automatically set up. Correctly too.
Worked for me. Plenty of room for syncing via Zune.
Enjoy.......

Wp7 and sdcards.....be careful!!!!!

Well its my own fault but I thought maybe I can save some others the heartbreak of a damaged sdcard. We all know that wp7 reformats the sdcard when installing the first time. Also if you switch sdcards while phone is off or anything and then boot into wp7 you will fry your card.
I flashed wp7 just to see what it was all about blah blah. Decided it was time to return to android. Blah blah i stuck my android sdcard with all my backups, pics, work stuff back into the phone and rebooted to flash android back through nand . Somehow i let it boot back to wp7 instead of nand and it killed my card. Lesson learned. Keep your sdcard 10ft. away from Wp7 at all times. Don't switch out your wp7 sdcard till you are actually back in android just to be safe. Oh and backup your sdcard!!!!!!!!

If for any reason your sd card becomes corrupt just use this program: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool.shtml
lol, hard lesson but it was obviously worth it as you wont be stupid enough to do something like that again, especially when it clearly states in read-me that card is partitioned etc.
Thank you for this post, I was not aware that something like this can happen, and now I'll take precautions so it wont happen to me.

Did you actually read the second paragraph????? Yes I read the read-me. That's how I knew to use a spare sdcard. Plus the read me states that the card will be reformatted upon first boot and if removed the phone will lose all userdata. Had nothing to do with stupidity. Has to do with a pregnant wife needing my attention and me letting go of the power button to soon. Stuff happens.
Now to be more helpful than negative......unlike the athiest with his stellar "I don't believe in God, but I sure think I am a God of android" bad attitude.
The sdcard wasn't reformatted. It was showing as being damaged. I was able to find a simple, free data recovery program that was able to recover most of the card.
I see this may happen often because after using wp7 you may be in a haste to flash back to android (wp7 is just sad IMO). Just wait till you are booted into android just to be safe. Also while fixing my mess up yesterday I stumbled on another problem.
Recently read a post about partitioning the sdcard for optimum use when ram builds came out. System -ext. for data and another for cache. I picked up this sdcard off the desk after finding my main card had been damaged. Then did a task 29, flashed magdlr, and Mdj's gingerbread. Inserted the sdcard and did first boot. To my surprise I had all of my apps pre loaded and I hadn't logged into Google yet so I knew it wasn't Google data backup that loaded my apps. So I went into root explorer and saw the ext. and then realized which sdcard I had slid in. There for a second I thought "WOW me and mdj have the exact same apps". Blah blah reformatted card and reflashed gingerbread. Done.

Myself, and a few others, have manged to reformat the SD card in a single button press by puttinf it into a digital camera and using the format option. It shows the card as 200mb but after the lighting quick format reads the correct size...voila.
Thanks...good to know. I will try it today. It took 8 hrs. for that application to fix my sdcard so that the computer could read it. Though my phone still wont read it. Out of 3700 pics I recovered 98% of them, all of my work files and android apps. Got real lucky. Took another hour after that for the computer to copy them to another 16gb card. Made for a long night. Now when I get home I can reformat the bad card and use as backup.

Do you have any suggestions for a good data recovery application. The one I used was free and easy to use but cost me about 4 he's of sleep. I know a lot of ppl experience sdcard corruption frequently maybe we can get it into a sticky that ppl will find before they reformat. I did not know till last night that it was possible to recover drives this way. I almost erased all of my families Christmas pics. PREGNANT wives don't like that kind of news. okay, i've tried using minitools partition to try and delete the 200mb partition and then recreate the entire 16gb that is my microsd as well as sdformatter with full (erase as well as overwrite) with size adjustment on but the problem is that i can only see one partition, the 200mb partition, i can't even see the the second partition or whatever that wp7 created. I even tried doing the low-level-format but it's still stuck at 200mb!
anyone have any other solutions?

Just download and install SD Formatter 3 on your pc, run the program and in the options change FORMAT SIZE ADJUSTMENT to ON and leave it at QUICK FORMAT. Dont worry that it only shows the 200MB partition it will reformat your card and bring back its full size. It worked everytime for me.
Mark.
i tried that through android usb storage mode but it would keep on going back to 200mb. the only way that using sdformatter proved to be successful was to connect the microsd through magldr and not through android
thanks for the tip though!
google samsung sd formatter. Format as FAT32 with overwrite enabled. It fixed my bad card when i returned to android
By the way, you have to mount the card via MAGLDR as it wont mount in android (it is detected in windows this way)

have you bought the sd card from ebay? it might be fake. It happened to me too, bought a 32gb microsd, for about 20 euro, knew it was fake, but i just tried my luck. When the package arrived it got myself some brand new earrings, probably worth 2 bucks.

16 hours and I have only one issue left.. memory card is only being recogised 200mb

I have been at this for 16 odd hours and have overcome wifi probs, activation probs, chevvy issues.. done 3 flashes of wp7, radio updated.. all is grand now but the memory card issue!
Please, someone allow me to go to bed by explaining how I can format the card to show more than 200mb?!
I have taken the card out, formatted on my pc, reformatted with other tools, am stuck, and have spent the last hour searching through threads for info I had earlier but can no longer find! it doesnt help that any search containing "SD" is ignored as xda search sees it as too small a word.
Who wants some good Karma?
I really dont get why this topic is been creating/cloned etc on a regular basis??
Please use search function, this topic has been discussed many times.
Use some commen sense, dont look for "SD", use keywords like "WP7" and "200" or "200mb", "partition" etc. Or even reading the readme that came with the WP7 rom would be a good start
Why not help me instead of witholding what you know and making me forrage around one hell of a mess of a forum to find information I have been searching for since this afternoon????????
from the read me, and i quote "WARNING: WP7 will format the SD card during the first boot.
Two SD card partitions are created during cold boot.
First one is a 200Mb FAT partition and another one with unknown format which
is used as RAID with main memory."
That doesnt explain how to change the RAID partition into physical memory I can access from the device...

Here is what you need to do:
Make sure your SD card is in the phone
Do a factory reset by going to settings>About>Reset your phone.
After WP7 reboots, it will recognize your card and all the date.
You will have to re-enter your Activation code.

Thanks for the advice.
Is there any way this can be done outside of the device? I have heard that I can get an SD formatting tool but whatever one I downloaded did nothing to help.
I am reluctant to do the 4th hard reset of the day for this OS as a) there is talk of the auth code working only 3 times, and b) I have everything else working now and dont want to tempt fate!
Is it only a WP7 hard reset that will resolve this for me now?
:-(
Thanks in advance of your help my man!!
also, wont a hard reset undo all of the unlocking and such from chevvy?

Im pretty sure it will undo the unlocking, but it only takes a few minutes to go thru it again once you have everything downloaded.
Hard reset number 5 it is then!!
It didnt save my settings on the mem card, obviously as it wasnt in there in the first place during the previous hard reset.
Im becoming a master at hard resets and personalisation now!
that's not gonna help, , the first time it boots its gonna again make a 200meg partition and the rest create a raid.
download a partition program (there are loads, personally i have a ubuntu laptop and use that, you could also make an ubuntu live cd, boot to that and delete teh partition there.
through Ubuntu...
phone into magldr, usb mass storage, connect to Ubuntu, the 200meg filesystem icon will soon appear on the desktop, right click, format, instead of clicking ok click disk utility, select the 200 partition and click unmount then click delete, then select the unknown partition, and click delete.
if you are going back to android now would be a great time to set up an ext partition if you want one.
If you are sticking with wp7, then you can't format it to show more than 200meg, that's all that wp7 allocates to the fat partition, all the rest goes to system storage. Messing with the disk (even removing it whilst wp7 is running, i believe) will trash the data on the card and wp7 will reformat it.
If you are heading back to wm then create a fat32 partition the full size of the card.

thanks for nothing....here is the information, installed android on HD2 on nand memory like the instructions here now it shows 200mb, can someone really help me find out where the rest of the gb went?
can you link the instructions you followed to install nand? also did you partition your sd card correctly? you can double check to see how your sd card is partitioned by using this free program. if i had to take a guess it would seem you have partitioned your sd card backwards but there is little info to go by so its really a stab in the dark.
had wp7 installed before? wp7 formats all your sd card to some weird wp7 only format, leaving just 200gb as normal, readable space.

format your sd card with panasonic sd formatter in your pc.'cause i had the same thing before, and solved this way.
i would backup your sd card to your computer and then once you have backed it up format it with what ever partition manager you like. i personally use minitool 6 which i posted on post 4. then place a fresh copy of android on your sd and flash as normal. dont forget to wipe date/cache/delvic. i cant say for sure if this would fix the problem but i have noticed this simple process fix some of the problems i've had in the past.

16gb Micro Sd wont delete or add Items but I can open files but cant format the sd?

So I have this Issue I found my 16gb HD2(I no longer have the hd2) that's I guess corrupted I can view the files move them to my desktop but I cant format the SD, I tried my Nexus One, digital camera, Windows 7, Macbook, ubuntu, mini partition tool and testdisk with no results. I remember this issue happen when I tried to run android through SD maybe you guys know why. thanks
Some sd cards especially ones that have been bought on ebay or overseas have a memory hack in them. What happens is the sd card shows 16gb but in reality it may only have 6-10gb. The hack provides the sd card to show more space then is actually there. You can use it just fine with no problems at all but once you go over the actual memory it really has & not just shows you then get a slew of corrupted files on your sd card leaving it almost useless. This is only 1 example, others causes could be if you take an ad card out while you transferring files to it. In the end there is little you can do and what I would of suggested you've already tried. (minitool) this has helped me fix a card that I was transferring files when my power went out. This will probably not help but have you tried different ports on your computer? What happened when it was in you nexus?

Yeah I learn this lesson on my chinese 32gb lol but on my 16gb sd was actually the one that came with the hd2 so I know for a fact is legit. everytime I put it on my N1 it tries to format it and then a message pops out saying card unmounted. I also tried my good old nokia n82 which usually Nokias are really good at formatting corrupted cards it doesn't give me the choice of formatting the card. Im wondering of their some type of lock on the sd card.
there is a really small lock on the front of a sd card but none that i know of on a micro sd. did you use the minitool partition wizard or the data recovery program? if you only used the partitioning wizard i would try the minitool data recovery program found here.
Running mini tool this is what I get it wont fix it though https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/3-oc0r_Bbv5qrYncR3IzCZaCRbbB6vENK-AyJ2O_CkI?feat=directlink
running minitool data or minitool partitioner? it looks like minitool data if i remember correctly. yeah, it says "minitool found errors on disk but will not fix them because diskcheck was run without fix parameters." i would try it again but select "check and fix detected errors" see if that helps. if it dont help then i would suggest to wait for advise from someone a little more knowledgeable about this.

what about good ol' Check Disk from Windows Explorer?
Another program is SD Formatter 3.0.
Try it and play with the options.
SD formatter is pretty good i must say. Here is another one that might be of some use. I have a corrupted flash drive around somewhere so i'll try and find that. maybe I can play around with it to see what might work and report back. I would also take a look at this link as it provides some very useful information about sd cards. you can find that here, please make sure you read the section on "Formatting is required". This will explain why you may be running into problems along with what the cause might be.
Yea the same thing happened to me with my 8 gig card, i even tried formatting it at best buy and with a camera and still wouldn't format. So i just had to buy a new one.

Galaxy note 3 doesnt recognize my SD Card

Hello all,
I have been using Galaxy note 3 for the last 3 years or so, have rooted it, installed AOSP and stock ROMs (including the latest Note 7 ports) on it. So I have a fair understanding of how the phone works, and am able to work with errors on a very comfortable basis (sometimes, with help from other XDA members as well).
Now, here's where I am stuck. I was running a Note 7 port ROMs (Phronesis and Magma-NX), and also ran an AOSP ROM. Since last week, my phone has not been able to recognize my SD Card (I have two cards: one, a 32gb card, and the other a 128gb card) on either of the stock or AOSP ROMs. It says: Corrupted. So I begin to format the card (both of them) on the phone itself, and I keep getting this message when I try to format my SD Card via phone:
thread binder_7 gave up waiting for partitionPublic after 180000ms
The SD Cards format properly on my laptop. The end result is my phone doesn't recognize any memory cards, and I basically end up working with the internal storage of 32gb. I havent encountered this error before, and I have no clue about what to do. I have tried googling it, and Google gives me a result for partitionPrivate and not partitionPublic. I dont know if these are the same things or not, and in either case, I absolutely dont know
what to do.
Can anyone suggest/guide as to what should I do?
I had an issue where my phone wouldn't see an SD card unless it was given a name when attached to a PC, might be nothing to do with it but could be worth a try?
Sent from my Power using XDA-Developers Legacy app

Sorry buddy, but didn't quite understand when you said" given it a name". How and what did you do to name your SD Card? I will definitely try anything to make it work
I have same problem and I never fix it. I follow so many guides from Google without luck, seems that my N3 decide to not read external memory any more.

Hey buddy, in that case, what did you do? Did you end up using a lot of cloud based storage on your note 3?

Yes, I use Google Photo app for my pictures and videos, Spotify 4 music, large files like Twrp and Titanium backups stored on external hard drive.

I guess that is probably working good for you; do you have your photos and videos setup to be directly posted on the Cloud then?
Definitely, you have various options how to upload directly, with mobile plans, only with WiFi, only on charge.
Awesome, thanks buddy.. Did you try to have someone look up the SD Card slot to see if it was damaged or if it needed a replacement?

Just to check, have you tried to convert your sd cards into internal storage (adoptable storage) before the problem occurs ?
@zlazaar I'm not sure bro.. All I did was just copied one app from my internal memory to the external SD Card. But I didn't jot try to convert Tele external SD into an internal memory.. Do you think that's what the issue is here?

Can you try this please :
- Format one of your sd cards using your PC (use this recommended tool)
- Make sure you choose FAT32 as file system before format
- Check if you got the correct total size of the formatted sd card
- Shutdown your phone, put your sdcard, boot directly to recovery
if the recovery is able to recognize the sd card with the correct total size, then you don't have a hardware failure.

When you connect it to a PC, when viewing My Computer as it used to be called, you can see all of the drives, C:, D: etc, on that screen if you right click above your SD card drive select rename, it should be under removable drives. A long shot but also an easy one so worth a punt.

I totally agree, sd card volume must have a name.
Thank you

@zlazaar Hey buddy, so I downloaded the SD Formatter, and did a quick format (should I have done full Format - if yes, which one - Erase or overwrite). I also tried the Format Size Adjustment ON and OFF.
I have 2 SD Cards, one 128gb and the other a 32gb. The SD Formatter formatted the 128gb card as an exFAT, and the it formatted the 32gb card as a FAT32. However, TWRP still didn't recognize either of the cards. I still dont have the cards running on the phone..
