what are the indicators? - Vibrant General

above the screen at the top left it looks like led's but we all know thats not what they are.

proximity sensor... One thing it does lets say your on a call the screen will go to sleep, when you move the phone from your face it will turn back on... pretty darn cool

I dont think so it has a light sensor though, if you dont want it to turn off as many people dont you can download HD Tweak which will allow you to turn of the feature
Hope that helps

mmm interesting someone who knows more about the HD will answer this
sorry i couldnt help more
Correct me if I'm wrong but the CMOS camera on the front is used as a light sensor.

You're wrong
The HD has a true light sensor (next to the earpiece, the little 2mm transparent plastic), but has not proximity sensor.

The HD uses the light sensor when you call.
I don't use the stock rom anymore, but I think it's functioning like that :
* You're in a light environment :
- you dial / receive a call, but keep the phone on the desk : the screen is on for about 10s then shutdown.
- you dial / receive a call and immediatly put it near your ear : the light sensor detects the difference of light, and shuts off the screen.
* You're in a dark environment :
- you dial / receive a call, and keep in on the desk or put it near you ear, it's exactly the same (I don't remember if it's shut immediatly or waits the default "about 10s" timeout).
The main difference between a light sensor and a proximity sensor is that the proximity sensor emits infrared that is reflected by your skin : it "knows" that you have the phone near your face, while the light sensor only know if "it's dark" or "it's light".
Another thing to know is that the light sensor doesn't work when the screen is off : that's why, in an environment with plenty of light, the screen is not powered back if you take away the phone from your face.

At least, they're wrong about the "proximity sensor" of the Touch HD
The first HTC with proximity sensor is the Touch Pro2. The TP2 has light sensor AND proximity sensor
you can try touch incall which allows you to change how the phone works during call !!
for example... turn off when held upright to face..
turn screen on when horizontal : )

[Q] Ambient light sensor and backlight

According to the Leo/Linux status wiki (http://htc-linux.org/wiki/index.php?title=Leo/Status) the Ambient Light Sensor is still not working properly.
That would explain why auto backlight adjustment does not work.
However, when in the phone screen the light sensor seems to work in that the screen goes dark when I cover the light sensor, as expected.
So I am curious as to the status of this regarding auto backlight specifically, does anyone have any more concrete info?
Perhaps there are separate light sensors? Or perhaps the light sensor only works in a limited fashion for the time being?
Just curious, not complaining
(P.S. the free "Battery Level" widget from the Market has worked well for me in the absence of auto backlight adjustment, in case others find it useful)
well there's a proximity sensor on the phone that comes into play while you are in an active call. it disables the back as you put the phone to your ear. you were simply simulating that action by covering the sensor with your hand.
Ah ok! Thats what the proximity sensor is. That is indeed marked as working on the status wiki, so that makes sense.
Thanks!

[Q] Anyone able to locate just where the light sensor is?

This may be a total noob question, but I was just curious to know the exact location of the light sensor because I cant seem to figure out where it is located.

That dot that looks like a front facing camera (FFC) - that is your sensor there that controls screen on/off on calls and the auto brightness.

Are you sure, because when I ran sensor test that dot did change the proximity sensor values, but the light values wouldnt change even if I covered it completely.
The only way I was able to change the light value was to move the whole phone into a darker or brighter location, but not by finding a pinpoint sensor on the phone.
Edit 2: When I cover the proximity sensor dot (the obvious one) with my finger and shine a light at the phone, nothing happens, and when I remove my finger from the dot and shine a light right on it, the screen gets brighter. I suspect both sensors are in the same spot (the plastic dot you see probably transmits ambient light to the light sensor as well as housing the proximity sensor, in the way many computers use a little clear/frosted plastic piece to indicate the status of an LED that is buried in the chassis.
Try it with a flashlight and see if you get different results.
If you are interested in disabling the light sensor go into settings and manually set your brightness.
I have to say the proximity sensor works much better than on my Hero.
Sent from my HTC Evo Shift 4G
i noticed the proximity sensor responds much faster than the one on my Evo
The light sensor is just to the right of the proximity sensor under the speaker grill. Turn on auto-brightness and test it with your finger.

when you are making call or sensor is activated somehow it' became red.
thats normal. dont panic.
It has nothing to do with water.
Okay. I will thank our now i can good sleep have a nice night or day!

My proximity sensor will lit up the red light whenever I open up TalkBox app, I don't understand why as that app doesn't even use proximity sensor, maybe a bug or coding error in the program.

i guess its a wetness sensor.. as i just experienced this issue some time back...
i had just taken a bath n my cell starting ringing, i went ahead n received the call without drying myself. As soon as i ended the call my screen went off, there was this red light coming out of one of the sensors, and the phone wasn't even switching on. I had to remove the batteries and place them back after which it started like normal.

Talkbox uses the proximity sensor to determine how you are listening to your messages. If you hold the phone up to your ear then it will play the message through the earpiece. If you hold it away from your face then it will use the speaker.

It may be a bug or something... Did you try updating your phone, or flashing a new stock/custom ROM to see if the problem remains ?
Proximity sensor which is located beside the front facing camera will always be activated whenever you're in a call. It's slightly red in colour, and more noticable in a dark room. To see the proximity sensor in action you can go to the phone dialer and key in *#0*# and it will bring up the LCD test. Select sensor and you can see the red light of the proximity sensor being lit up. Hover your finger or an object over the proximity sensor (need not to be covering the sensor) and the phone will vibrate and so will the background change to green.

Lol at you... Did you even bother reading the first page of the thread ? Guess not, since you're just repeating what we already told the guy

Heartbeat sensor activates in idle

Hi. I see that the heartbeat sensor lights up with red light whenever something is within ~0.5cm from it, even if the screen is off. It happens when the phone is in my pocket, on the table or if i put my finger near it. Why is that? It dosen't seem to take an actual reading unless i ask s-health to to so...
