On the eve of the Vibrant release, I have a few questions... - Vibrant General

Coming from a Nexus One. I know you can achieve root but here is what I want to know:
Has Samsung provided the tools so developers can begin cooking ROMS?
If so, is it possible to cook a Froyo version so we don't have to wait for Samsung's typically lazy *** to push it out?
Is it possible to turn off touch wiz and use stock Android?
These are my primary concerns and I appreciate any help with them.

TouchWiz enhances usability of the phone, and actually adds some useful features. You should check out the video from MobileBurn here:
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/07/samsung-vibrant-meta-review-extravaganza/
I don't think it's something you'll really want to turn off.

After my using the Behold 2 for a week I held no hope for Touchwiz but after using it in my store today and watching some reviews I actually like it. I would like root but I'm not sure if I want to give up Touchwiz.

the closest thing you can get to froyo is the froyo looking launcherpro which also removes the touchwiz 3.0 at the same time making it run faster, i currently have it on my g1 with a 2.1 rom and it's running super quick.
look up "samsung galaxy launcher" and you should find a couple of videos of it running launcher pro on youtube
oh did i mention this app is free and does not need rooting to work?

Is an all AOSP Rom even possible?

I mean all the way AOSP? I miss the Roms that were available for my G1...I thought the SenseUI would be awesome to have, but seriously...it actually sucks.
Yeah. There's AOSP 1.6, and DarchDroid is based off of AOSP 2.1. Do a search next time....
an all asop rom is not fully possible yet, theres a few out there but the camera doesnt work and a few other things but thats because they cant fix that until the official 2.1 comes out then we will have our fully aosp, theres darch vanilla, and darch droid, but a few things are missing as i stated above, if you are like me and you want a fully functionable aosp rom just wait until this update comes out then my friend we score, i hate sense, it blows...............ive been waiting for this a long time....dont even bother with the old aosp roms i mean their good but not 100%

Here's the big answer to your question. All AOSP roms ARE possible. They just don't have all the functionality of Sense ROMs. DarchVanilla, or the link in my sig, will get you as close to aosp as you can get without breaking functionality.

And might I add it's all HTCs fault because they won't release the .29 kernel source and their massive amount of modification to it disallows the ability to just port over a .29 kernel as it is... What Android was all about in the first place.

Evolution Rom

Hello, I plan on releasing a rom as soon as the phone is rooted. If you could ask for one thing you would like in a phone what would it be? The rom will be free! Check back here when the phone is released!

A black and red/blue theme(either)
and clear rose would be awesome
This might be a given, but I'd like for it to be free of any and all pre-installed Sprint apps, which I know are installed on the device courtesy of several Youtube videos.

Yes, i plan on uninstalling all of the sprint apps that are just for advertising.
I'd ask for free 4G mobile hot spot tethering, but that might be controlled via a Sprint app, still worth mentioning though.

Awesome, actually not sure if we're talking about the samething I meant the built in router on the 4G that allows you to tether off to up to 8 different devices. That's why I said not sure if that's possible, but if not tethering would be good enough for me too, thanks by the way.

I don't know if it's possible to get the clock to flip the way it does on WinMo. I know alot of users have requested this on Android and have been told it's not possible. I'm no expert so I really can't comment on why but that's what has been said.
After Android 2.2 is released, will it be possible base your custom ROM's on the update?

I have no idea. I'm hoping that the Evo doesn't release with 2.2 because i already have a good handle of 2.1. Even if it does 2.2 will only open the door to more features for the ROM.

I wouldn't mind one at first that just removes the Sprint apps and adds wifi tethering. Any performance tweaks would be welcome as well.

[Q] Touchwiz petition?

Anyone think there would be a point in making a petition and sending it to Uncle Sammy, so that maybe in the future touchwiz would be an OPTION rather than mandatory?
I kinda think that samsung won't really listen but I'd be willing to give it a try.
Personally I'm going to be using LauncherPro on my Epic, but it would be nice to just shut off the touchwiz UI without rooting and flashing something new.

Unlikely..their goal is to try to improve TouchWiz till the point people like it..these kind of things heps sets manufacturers apart to the average consumer...overall though its not like TouchWiz 3.0 is bad..if anything most people hate it because either they are used to Sense, think it looks like an iphone, or used a previous TouchWiz and didn't like it...if you set this aside its pretty compatible to Sense, some even like it better...
But again..unlikely..
I don't see any problem with Touchwiz, I think it looks awesome, and if someone has a problem with the performance at all, they can just get a different phone. Touchwiz 3.0 has a ton of features that are just great to have, anyway, couldn't you just run a rom if you don't like it?

They said they plan to make custom UI's unnecessary.
I don't think they have to get rid of touchwiz.. just make it optional. Rooting is pretty simple and i'll probably do it, but at the same time, why dont they give the user a choice? Like I said, i'll be using LauncherPro on mine, but I think the gesture would be nice on Sammy's part.

That's because Samsung uses TouchWiz, HTC uses Sense, Motorola uses Blur... it's their version. What you're asking is Honda to sell you a Civic but give you the option to use a Corolla engine... it can be done, but it must be swapped (rooted)
In my opinion TouchWiz > Sense and MotoBlur it's not that bad and honestly if you really don't like it just root the phone and install a custom ROM why petition over something so cosmetic you can petition for a GPS fix if you want to do something productive.

Got proof? Because I don't think that's going to happen.
Gingerbread will improve on Android's basic UI. The way buttons\menus look. The status bar. Etc. You bet your ass manufacturers are still going to load on their custom UIs. HTC has already said that they will include sense when they update their phones to Android 3.0.
I'm going to have to agree with everyone else. If you don't like TW3, install Launcherpro or ADW. Wait for a custom rom which gets rid of TW3 (like senseless roms for EVO). It's only a matter of time before the Cyanogen team puts out a 100% AOSP rom for it anyway. But for those who don't liek rooting... Launcherpro.

The proof is in the videos google made when they were showing off Android 2.2... they said it themselves in the video, I'd search for it but the video is long as hell
see this thread
thought I'd update this thread to point to another more recent thread: How to disable touchwiz
To be honest, Touchwiz is my favorite UI I've used.
Thats above Sense, MotoBlur, Stock, etc.
Always have been a fan of the color themes, love the lockscreen, the dialer, and even coming to like the ****ty horizontal app drawer.
If Samsung can improve Touchwiz to have the media player and other features that are on the other Galaxies, it would be even better!
I was going to say, it's easy enough to turn off. Yeah, I don't care for it, but it's not a big deal to make the vanilla launcher the default one. You don't have to install or remove anything, or need root.

Am I the only person that is thinking like this?

Two things...
Why are the new gingerbread ROMs (OMGB and Evervolv) themed and modified to hell and back? Why can't someone just import things (one by one) to build a stock vanilla gingerbread ROM, and then work from there? I don't want anything altered from the basic vanilla ROM but here we are, dealing with all these customizations and different themes already applied and apps thrown onto there (other than the basics like SU). I don't want any music app on my phone so WHY FORCE ME TO HAVE ONE? I don't want to only have to choose between 2 ROMs to enjoy gingerbread this early. This ultimately leads me having to alter things to GET IT BACK TO A VANILLA ROM.
Also, why must all themes have to be rainbow-eccentric and have no "flowing" colors? Most of the themes are just an eye-sore and make me think the "designer" is colorblind and leaves me to theming everything myself. No, the app doesn't look good if it has a STRONG RED next to a DEEP BLACK, with STRONG BLUE somewhere mixed in.
so, if you dont like whats being offered by the devs, step up and make your own ROM's. if you read through the threads, most users do like what is being offered and that is why they are so popular. personally i cant stand the vanilla android experiance and am currently rocking Nils Biz-sence rom...

This.
Why haven't you "imported things (one by one) to build a stock vanilla gingerbread ROM" if it's so easy? These devs are theming their ROMs to their (and other users') liking, and they are nice enough to post them here. Appreciate that for what it is.
I'd like a vanilla rom that I could customize myself, but I would prefer to have someone else do the work so I'll take what they give me.

I'm not saying it's easy, I can't do what the CM team has done, (because that's what they're doing; taking the CM fixes, applying them, and theming it to their liking) but why are the 2 only ROM dev's right now working on adding **** to a version of android that ISN'T already built for the Incredible? Why can't they make a vanilla ROM, AND THEN customize it to their liking?

Thats not true. the dependencies can be added the same way they are take out.
It would just take alot of time, work, and research to get it working.
You would have to know what files are needed, and where they go.
Also, kernel compatability may also be an issue, as you see that there are certain kernels for AOSP, Sense, GB, etc...

Technically it's possible, but practically it's impossible. The amount of work and "hacking" necessary would not be worth it, especially considering how few HTC users would probably want TouchWiz.

Anyways, the question was if its possible. The answer is yes.
Will it happen? Not likely lol because its way too much work and like you said, teejay, there really is no demand for it.
