Vibrant and Stock 2.2 Build - Vibrant General

Hey. First time poster, and new to android development. I have had the G1 and use the cyanogen mod, but with the new vibrant on order I am starting to look at what it can do. How hard and if it can be done, how, would one put a stock 2.2 build ( like whats on the N1 ) on the vibrant?

Dude there really isnt much to read as far as the vibrant goes, so if you would have read you would see the answer is no....lazy.

Ill admit it. Glanced at the first few posts and didn't think it was going to answer my question. But after reading through them, found several boards with the information. Thanks though

Just to let you know this weekend my whole entire purpose in life is going to be getting CM6 to run on the Vibrant

Looking forward to CM6. The touchwiz stuff doesn't really sell for me, nice but not needed. Really looking to see how CM6 with 2.2 Dalvik JIT runs on this phone. I am seeing fast and power in the future.

I've actually asked Cyanogen if he might work on CM for the Vibrant (seeing as I'm probably getting one and need CM!). He stated that the Vibrant and DroidX were at the top of the list of devices. Well, seeing the issues with the DroidX's bootloader and "e-fuse", the Vibrant is possible. He'll definitely be getting a donation from me once I have the Vibrant.
I'd post the tweets, but don't really have time.

Not trying to get anyone's hopes up, but.....chances are looking very good.

looks like thats still the vibrant build (look at the icons on the notification bar) with ADW running, so I'm not too hopeful yet!

Ah, very true. Didn't think of that.

First of all, yes, you will EVENTUALLY be able to put 2.2 on your Vibrant.
Second, this thread belongs in the general section.

x2.
i'm no fan of touchwiz either. for the mean time i'm using a home theme app called "launcher pro" which looks and operates just like froyo 2.2 minus the flash capabilities of course. runs very fast and smooth for what it is. i'll be running this until froyo actually comes out.

so is that pretty much it for ROMS?

Before I rooted I would read all these posts about how great the roms would be after Sprint released 2.1. So finally I rooted this weekend, and as I look through all the ROMs they all have major issues, and a lot of the major players have moved on to the EVO. So is that it. As soon as 2.1 comes to us we are left with a bunch of roms that don't work any better, or worse, then stock? That is unless I'm willing to cut out all of HTC and Google software.
Please give me advice as to what I do with this rooted phone now.

Not all of the phones have major issues if u read a lot of the roms they tell if they have any. Also there r stock roms that can be overclocked. We've had three or four devs leave to the evo. That not the end of the world plus they left with final full working roms. If ur not happy with something then for it itself or realize nothing is perfect and that these devs spend a lot of there free time cooking there roms and get real tired of hearing people complain about something that us free. Be a little grateful. Read, search, to a little homework and then ask the questions u have inside ur head before u post a dumb question
Look around, no one here is going to hold your hand.

I would chalk up the majority of the "user problems" to user error such as not wiping between flashes or bad 3rd party software with memory leaks or preventing the phone from sleeping...
Sadly a good number of devs went on to the Evo, even worse is some left in the mid of new releases without fixing some bugs.
Even though a couple of the dev's have moved on, there are still some great ones working on the hero. There are at least 6 or 7 fully functioning roms built on 2.1 right now and there's even some movement on 2.2.

As soon as 2.2 is fully functional I'm gonna make a rom of my own with it and I've got my second rom comming soon to 2.1 woohoo lol
Lol, I have been a member here for more then a year, but I don't post because I know what you get here when you post, I had 2 people call my question dumb or call me ungrateful..
Anyways, I was not being mean to the devs. I think their feelings are still intact (those who have not left)
As for reading and searching the forums, which the "positive" posters repeat like a mantra.... well I have been reading, I've been reading like crazy, and All I see are problems with the Roms because no one ever posts positive feedback.
However, I gather from those more productive posts here that the ROMs are very good quality. So from here ill try them out myself, and refrain from posting again for the next year.
Thank you and sorry to all those with tender feelings who where offended by the simplest of posts.
Just an FYI for everyone Fresh just put out a 2.5.2 BETA to donors.
I assume he will leave this one in 100% working order before he dumps the hero for good.
I think he said in the email something along the lines of "last build before FINAL" but don't quote my quote.
I haven't run a damaged ROM in weeks - I went from him to Darch which I feel is the end all.

Aloysius 2.1 is rock solid, fast, chocked full of goodies, and did I say, STABLE. Blows any stock Sprint ROM out of the water. DarchDroid 2.7 is good and fast if you like AOSP. And I liked RegawMOD a lot too (use Honeybun OC kernel for extra speed). Plenty of others out there as well. I really liked the Blue ROM but my Hero won't load it. Just try them and quit worrying about it. Use apps2sd and then nandroid and you can go back and forth without losing your apps.

Cyanogenmod for Vibrant? How close are we?

I've been following the progress of the Cyanogenmod development for the Vibrant lately and it seems to be moving pretty quickly, i.e. there already booting into the main UI, I believe. Anyway, I'm still wondering if anyone out there has even a rough estimate of when it will be available for the Vibrant? Thanks in advance.

Some time in the near, or distant future. One of Cyanogens pet peeves are people asking when it will be there whenever they are able to get it done. All of the dev's have loved ones, jobs etc. We can give estimates all day long ranging from early September to late October/November. Sadly the only ones that do know would be Wes.

I obviously care, and I would like it soon, but I'm not going to hound Wes or any other devs about it, and I don't think posting a question in a thread counts. I'm not a dev and I can't code, so the best I can do is beta/alpha test, and if no one helps me that's perfectly fine.

What draws you to the UI? cause ADW has the sides scrolling option that TW does but you can use themes and such.
Ive seen the adw drawer. It is very similar and I like the convience of the scrolling bottom on the home screen. But im not too sure of stability. I heavily modded my g1. And from time to time I would get force closes. Im trying to minimize the mods on this phone. The adw drawer is not bad. But right now its not something I want on the phone

The TW drawer is nice, on my phone ADW doesn't load right. When I first go to the tray it gets stuck in a loop where it keeps wanting to load the tray it just can't. After about 5 tries it usually loads. The stock icon's look better than the adw galaxy s theme, and even when I say use stock icons it doesn't use the phones stock icons.
aawww, I missed a flame war.

I like some of the samsung apps over the stock ones.

Not to be an ass, but If you don't see it here chances are it's not available yet. I believe XDA to be the central hub of information (even if the news originates somewhere else). If there is news it won't be hidden on the Development page.
Look in the forums of the other Galaxy S variants to see the status of Froyo on this Samsung line of devices. I believe it will be a little while before one is released for a CDMA version.

This is my first smartphone, so instead of this thread just dropping to the bottom, maybe myself and others could learn something.
What exactly needs to be done with Froyo (or any ROM) before it can be adapted to a particular phone, in this case, the fascinate?
I suppose keeping it in relative lay-speak would be nice as well.
Having samsung release a 2.2 ROM for the US Galaxy S phones would be a start.
The euro variants have a different button layout among other things that makes life harder for our development.

We need samsung to release the 2.2 update, and that will give you 2.2
As far as custom roms / CyanogenMod 6 on the fascinate, we will need the 2.6.32 kernel source code to drop (and pray that Samsung will release the right source when they release that code) and then a bit of developing.
you really think there will even be a 2.2? Personally, I think it would be updated straight to Gingerbread
There's a post from kaos on the kaos rom for eris forms stating that he had 2.2 running on his fascinate before it bricked, but that he MIGHT be developing a rom for the fascinate.

We'll be so lucky if Kaos gets one working with the Fascinate, I had an Eris prior to the Fascinate and I was talking to him about developing for it, looks like he found someone to help him out.
His ROM > all others once they start rolling out.
Coming from an eris I would love to have punk kaos rom on my fascinate.
I'm coming from an eris too, and had kaos on mine, and about creamed myself after reading that, hahaha.....Even if kaos came out with a 2.1, id be all set.
LOL, same here. I got a late start with KaosFroyo, coming in at V30, after I discovered that one-touch root was finally available for the Eris. I had one month of the best Android experience possible on an Eris before I ordered up my new Fascinate. I wish I had the cash to buy a Fascinate for punk kaos, so he could start creating what could only become the best Fascinate ROM ever!
EDIT: Just saw the post where he said he's already working on one. Awesome!!! I'll DEFINITELY be donating to his coffee fund once he starts pumping out a ROM for this bad boy. Hmm, what will he name it though? I vote for Kaoscinate!
Yes, its true. I've been working on a 2.2 rom for the Fascinate. I got it to boot but was in the very early stages of dev when my phone let out a puff of smoke and died.
I got the phone through a sponsor, and have returned the phone to them and they're trying to get me another one. Hopefully they will soon and I can keep on truckin

Well, if you're sure
Just sent over some coffee cash for all the hard work on KaosFroyo, since I never got around to actually donating before. And also, I'm not done with it yet, as I'm loading up V35-1 on my deactivated Eris to let a co-worker with a live Eris play with. She's unhappy with 2.1, so she might want me to give her phone the same treatment, since she's stuck in a 2-year contract.
Anyway, looking forward to you getting a replacement Fascinate. Did it literally start smoking before it died? Dang, I knew these phones were hot, but that's just a bit over the top.

You guys reading Barak and Eugene's Tweets? Exciting stuff!

Like I said, I'm repeating the little I read and not adding any rumors too it. They are both saying 3-4x faster, fixing the IO problem before and showing 1255 quadrant bone stock, just rooted. Also thought I saw a mention of a POSSIBLE upload tonight.
I thought I remember reading that 2.2.1 ditches RFS for something else.
I'm Pretty certain their talking about android 2.2.1.
Sounds like changes to I/o for faster Vibrant's too.
Theyre saying touchwiz 2.2.1 which yeah it's just android 2.2.1 and just the corresponding touchwiz that skins it. And no, still RFS, they must be pretty firm on that, but they have optimized it, like I said 3-4x faster theyre saying it feels like. I'd like to think these guys have tried enough ROMs on their vibrants to know what 3-4x faster feels like, so I'm pretty confident this is great news.

so are leaks like this (or previous 2.2 leaks also) leaked from samsung or tmobile? I know we have all been blaming samsung for the delay in releasing 2.2 to us, so im wondering if samsung has released it to tmobile?
Basically, who is holding us up on the official update, Samsung or Tmobile? (or in other words, who to blame?)
either way, these developers are amazing. i would have thrown my phone in the toilet if it we not for the developers here at xda

I think they just need to release whatever they have and stop teasing/hoarding it. This is supposed to be a community. It's actually quite ridiculous.

Actually this is NOT what eugene and barak are tweeting about. They are tweeting about JL4 for the Vibrant. As to where they got this leak, well eugene has been able to get hold of leaks before so this isn't really a surprise.
As to the charges of hoarding or teasing, I don't recall eugene or barak ever owing me anything or anyone holding a gun to my head to follow their tweets.

Of course they don't owe use anything. But that's like someone discovering new firmware and choosing to talk about it rather than let everyone have a go at it. Wait, that's exactly what it is. No one else seems to have a problem with posting any new leaked firmware as soon as they discover them so why is this different?. The sooner it is posted, the sooner other devs can begin developing. That's the whole point of a community. Even if it is buggy I'm sure other devs are willing to sort it out for their releases.

They already released their source.. what has been done with that? Just because someone has something others don't,releasing it to the community guarantee's nothing. Eugene and Barak do plenty for this community, even when they are being harassed about it which is not cool.

I am looking to get a a "backup/mess around" phone to try new ROMs and generally play around with rooting/ADB/Theming/customization etc...
So my questions is: Which,if at all, is better/preferred and why?
I am kind of leaning toward the Nexus so I can see what vanilla android is like. But other then that, just wanted to get some opinions.
Thanks.
nexus one simple as that, more roms and it is a developer phone

Yea I definately don't think that the vibrant was very popular in general...let alone developing... the nexus is the mothership for devs...silly that even though the nexus was released quite a while ago, it is still the standard. Take for instance when cm7 came out...first thing I saw was.."VIDEO: Gingerbread running" Sure enough the phone in the video was a n1...seems like it is THE most developed phone, so as far as playing around...prolly won't get bored easily....
Thanks guys.
