App to find out what's causing data connection to start? - HD2 General

Does anyone know of an app that would help me find out what application/process is causing my 3G connection to turn on randomly...... a lot?
I've gone through all the options i can, to stop any program that runs updates (Twitter, Facebook, Stocks, ActiveSync, Internet time etc) but the connection STILL randomly connects >.<
Any help appreciated!

Thank you for asking that.
Finally someone else who find that's completely "censored".
I give you official answers from my phone provider:
It's normal. To avoid receiving a big bill, you should buy a pack data download, so if it randomly connects, you are safe. Other users reporting the same and its normal and the data pack is perfect solution- No comments
I give you answer from HTC support:
Go into settings/submenu/megasubmenu... whatever, and check "phone usage" n(which only tells the calls usage by the way, not the data)- no comments
I give you answer from forums users:
Yes either try this wonderful application: x,y,z to know the usage : (its paying ones).
Or completely mess the configuration to connect to internet via your HTC HD2 "quietly brilliant" device (very quietly)...
Ok you understand, you're more or less screwed and have to accept that complete scam.
And apparently we are 2 in the world now, to find that's an essential feature, missing (another one).
Ho and to actually diagnose which one is using gprs... Hm we can't even control to say "NO never activate DATA", because the button automatically turns on (quietly stupid).

This cab allows you to disable all data connections...enjoy

My phone was starting data connections all the time when I first flashed a cooked ROM and had it set up with the SFR Always On data connection... On my stock SFR ROM it was called Full Internet but it used exactly the same settings but I didn't have the problem so I just tried changing the name from Always One back to Full Internet and it worked strangely enough... I don't know if that can help but it might be worth a shot .

android market terms of service problem

Hello, i finally got my Hero. loaded a new ROM onto it and rooted it, but i´m having some trouble with the market app. whenever i try to open it it just says loading "android market terms of service" and stays there forever, the only choice is to wait longer og choose decline.
I´ve triyed both on wifi and gprs connection, and every other application on the phone can use both connections to browse and so on.just not android market..
Here is a little infor about the phone to help you figur my problem out.
ROM: update-hero-modacocustomrom-1.1-signed
Firmware version: 1.5
Baseband Version: 63.18.55.06U_6.35.04.25
Kernel version: 2.6.27-a550404199 [email protected] #521
Build number: 1.79.482.3 14733 CL#49365 release keys
Software version 1.0.0.A6288
Hope some kind soul is willing to help me out, thank you in advance.
I just put 1.1 on my Hero a few hours ago, and Market is still working fine for me. i did update the radio first though; you might want to try that.
otherwise, it could just be Market playing up, not at all unusual in my experience...
Updated the radio to this version, "update-hero-radio-63.18.55.06_6.35.05.15-signed" still no luck getting allowed to accept the terms of service, but i seems that the phone now has better signal strenght to the phone net.
After apoximitly 5 minutes i get a window instead of the loading screen where is says "Attention. An error has occured. Please try again later."
this sounds similar to teh connection errors that people are experiencing when they skip the sign in process during the initial set up. In general,m the only solution to that is to hard reset and sign in to google at the very first opportunity, during the set up screens and before you ever see the touchflo homescreen.
of course, it could just be a proxy in the APN settings.....
Year, i had that problem on the first time i changed the ROM, on that occasion i skipped the google account setup, and couldn´t use any program the used the internet.
But on this install i did do the sign in on first boot, and every program other that market that uses the internet or GPRS is working (weather, browser, mail, stock´s and so on)
Only thing that won´t start is the market tearms of service.
I had the exact same problem.
You need to contact your service provider and get the APN settings for your provider. After you have entered them in connect to marketplace over 3G and you should be fine.
My problem was caused by my phone company, Chess.no, shipping the unit with APN settings for Netcom! Obviously with a Chess sim inside the phone had some connectivity problems. Once the Chess APN settings were in I got connected straight away.
are you using wifi or 3g? I heard that market likes to make it's initial connection over 3G....
sadly i have a locked t-mobile G2 so i don't have any of these problems, i just sign in and it is automatically set up for me over 3G.
Arctic Matt was spot on, there was no APN profile in the phone, just made one with a name. after that it worked instantly.
Thanks alot.
Thanks for listening
I cannot believe that Scandinavian mobile providers, with their lazy ass coffee drinking cake eating lifestyle, have failed to notice this problem. If you look around on other forums (Google, Chess, Netcom) there are tons of people with this shortfall. I am so sick of this constant crap in Norway that I am moving my entire family over to Canada! In Norway, the technology is there and people want it but the companies providing it are infested by tech thick 50 year old management morons who are incapable of overseeing projects.
Just imagine if you were not a member of xda devs and have just got this phone as an average Joe. No apps! No help! ...and they wonder why people hack the phones to hell.
Glad I could help.
Sorry to dig up an old thread but I've got the exact same problem and have tried everything listed here. I had this issue on my LG Optimus One running Froyo, I flashed with a new ROM and still have the same problem.
I tried:
1. Master Reset through the phone (3 times!)
2. Entering APN and connecting via the mobile network before using WiFi (also tried WiFi first before using mobile network, no difference).
3. Signing in through the YouTube App and ensuring sync was on, yes that works, and I can see my Gmail, but still can't sign into the Market.
After (3), each time I try to open the Market I get " An error has occurred. Please try again later." and the Market just exits.
Anyone have any other solutions which might work??

Sometimes your provider will block your connection to market, until you verify that you are over 18 (as a child proofing method) etc.. (even on wifi, somehow)
at least that was a problem with someone I knew.. .. I assume master reset would clear market data and cache?

I don't think that's my issue, I've used my SIM as well as many other SIMs in other Android phones to access the market, it just seems to be an issue with this particular handset, oh well its weird!
Did you find a solution to your problem? I just flashed Android 2.2 to my HD2 and have a similar problem, only android market wont work.
Thanks!

I am having this same error as well.
Okay so i had to download an app called MoreLocale2 and force the locale to English(United States) and hard reset the phone. Worked fine after that. Hope it helps!
Android market just works here if google talks is enabled and connected...

Any way to stop data/internet connection entirely when not connected to Wifi?

New user here, please tolerate my long post with many questions. I've had my Touch Pro 2 for a few months now, but haven't gotten into customizing it at all yet. What I'm wondering is if there is a program that can prevent my phone from accessing the internet or using any data unless I am connected to Wi-fi. I'm a University student and spend most of my time on campus, which has free Wi-fi. Occasionally while tinkering with my phone I get an error message from one program or another, and the browser instantly kicks up and leads me to a page for troubleshooting. Eventually costing me data fees.
Is there any way to prevent my phone from accessing the internet entirely unless it is connected via Wi-Fi? I found a few programs that looked like they might solve my problem, but they only seem to work when roaming. Also if anyone happens to know, is the battery drain much higher if I leave Wi-fi on all the time? I'm currently in the habit of turning it off and on when I need to use it, but if the drain is low enough I might stop bothering with the constant on/off switching.
Thanks in advance for any help you folks can offer!
PS: Are there any "must have" programs or tweaks that I should know about? Other than a few games, my phone is still entirely stock. I've looked over the "software worth installing" thread, but being new to Windows Mobile it's hard to know what is a slight tweak, and what is something that everyone should probably have.
Search for the "NoData" cab. I think it's from Modaco.
I noticed that one previously, but was under the impression that it only blocked data transfers when roaming? If that's not true, or it can be configured otherwise, then that should be exactly what I'm looking for.
I used this program for my wife's phone. It blocks your phone from accessing your carrier's data network. It turns the hardware off, I believe. Worked for me!
first you should turn error reporting off since you'll never get a message back for a fix as MS won't do anything about it half the time. And second you should be able to turn off the 3g in connection settings under communication in the settings menu. When you do that it shouldn't auto on. You don't need any software to do what you need for this. I've had mine since it came out and the settings have held up through the Tilt and the Fuze as well. Hope this helps.
There you are

What's causing internet connections while roaming?

Hi folks,
Just back from my first holiday in France with my HD2 and, despite setting weather, Facebook, Twitter and email not to automatically download while roaming, something seemed to be establishing a GPRS/EDGE connection occasionally.
Any suggestions on what this could be or how to identify it?
Thanks,
Kris
stocks? weather? time sync?
If you dont want to have any data charges then I strongly recomend NoDatainRoaming by Dynamic+. It automatically switches off data connection (same as modoco no data) when you leave your home area but when you get back to your home area it turns it back on. No more forgeting to turn it off.

Same here .
i just returned from the USA .
before i walked on the plane i turned off all data connections .
i turned on my phone to take some pictures with it while in the USA . came home to find out i have about 120$ of fee's .
:/
you guys are lucky
I took a trip up to Gunma prefecture in Japan for new year. I came back to Taiwan and I had 800 us dollars phone charge... I didn't even take pictures with the phone I just brought it with me!
Had a similar issue in Greece. Footprints and google maps both seem to automatically start the data connection when they start. I have a feeling that the compass may do as well. Could be something to do with quick GPS trying to download updates?
I've been using modoco no data to good effect. May give NoDatainRoaming a go if it's automatic
same thing on mu dubai trip.. .These connections turn on automatically .
NoData works for me, just configure before you power down the phone to fly
RSS Reader has no Roaming setting so if you've got it on AUTO, best switch that off.
A quick search would certainly have brought the answer to all of you!
Don't be lazy!
Anyway, here's the solution: Go to "All Settings" --> Connections --> Connections --> Advanced --> Select Networks
There, simply select "My Work Network" everywhere.
With that setting, your phone is only allowed to use WiFi. There's no need for third party tools or anything, it's that simple.
My Location?
I think it is more important to find out what is making data connection and how to disable it, rather than using nodata to suppress everything. What if you really need to use HSPA/GRPS during roaming? You need to know how to enable data connection and do your thing without the HD2 automatically doing a lot of other data traffic in the background.
Alex,
That's exactly my concern - I'd like to be able to use the net knowing the HD2 isn't going to pull down a load of other stuff as well.
The weather tab is set not to connect while roaming, stocks are the same and RSS is configured not to automatically update at all.
The only two other things people mentioned are time sync and my location - how can I tell if those are connecting while roaming.
Kris
does anyone know how my location actually works?... cell broadcasting, gps, or how?... i set up the send no location info in settings and automaticly decline htc location service and the phone still knows were i am....

I have no idea HD2 is doing timesync, or how I can disable it. As for my location, disable it in the Settings tab.

I believe phone gets cell tower ID via normal handshake operation. Then it asks Google to translate it to a city name. It is the second part that consumes internet data traffic.
There is yet another possibility of hidden data traffic. I think HD2 has AGPS, but there is not interface to enable/disable it. Similar to My Location, AGPS translates cell tower ID to location, and triangulates to pin point where you are. Much quicker than GPS, but not as precise. If it is so, then it explains why taking pictures leads to data traffic.

Data Services Turns Itself Off

Anyone have this issue? After using the phone for a couple of hours, I have to actually either reboot the phone or turn the data services off and then on again in order to regain the data services in the on position. It seems to turn itself off various times throught the day. Anyone else having the same problem. I am running a T Mobile HTC HD2. I can't update weather, stocks or email until I reboot the phone. HELP ME PLEASE, DRIVING ME CRAZY!
You should try and contact T-Mobile for the full specifications of how to set up the internet connections on your HD2. This is what I did with Vodafone, and they sent me a whole list of items to set up on my device, such as the connection name, modem, access point, name & password and full proxy settings, for both HTTP and WAP.
Also, try and go to your network settings, and somewhere there should be an Advanced tab of some sort, where you can select from Mobile Internet and My Work Network. Always use Mobile Internet, as I have had trouble with My Work Network many times before.
Sorry I couldn't help you more. =/
I some times have problems but i dont quilify to help you since im using a unlocked hd2 and on the att network and not the default rom

You have a bad combination of Rom and Radio Rom.
(yes, even the stock rom and radio rom can be a bad combination)
Solution is flashing another radio.
read about it on the last 4 pages of this thread:

[Q] Constant 3G traffic

Hello,
Its driving me nuts and I can't find the answer anywhere.
I bought an Ideos X5 and I have been trying every ROM i can get my hands on.
In all of em I find the same issue that I cannot resolve.
The phone is downloading and uploading stuff ALL the time. I do mean all the time.
If Data is enabled then the 3G, or H is up there in the staus connecting all the time.
Recently I tried MIUI and it comes with a firewall which I used to block every app i have but with no result. its still there.
I thought it could be because of the GPS being aided but I disabled that too.
Any idea? My data plan is being consumed by god knows what and its happening in every ROM available.

The fact that the icon is present at the top doesn't mean that it's doing traffic. That is just like the wifi icon, to let you know that you have 3G/HSDPA connection established. If you don't have any applications like sync, email, mms, browsing, games that go online etc, than your data consumption should be something like 100kbytes/day. I've got a 500 mb plan and with emails on and applications downloaded I never go over 70-80mb the whole month... So, I believe that whatever application you've installed on the phone, that is consuming your data plan.
BTW, this is a smartphone, which was designed to stay online...so you may have to look into upgrading the data plan.
Try droidwall at market. It can block selective app connect internet.

oh.... I thought that the fact that it was there it meant that it was connecting.
