Any way to stop data/internet connection entirely when not connected to Wifi? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Themes and Apps

New user here, please tolerate my long post with many questions. I've had my Touch Pro 2 for a few months now, but haven't gotten into customizing it at all yet. What I'm wondering is if there is a program that can prevent my phone from accessing the internet or using any data unless I am connected to Wi-fi. I'm a University student and spend most of my time on campus, which has free Wi-fi. Occasionally while tinkering with my phone I get an error message from one program or another, and the browser instantly kicks up and leads me to a page for troubleshooting. Eventually costing me data fees.
Is there any way to prevent my phone from accessing the internet entirely unless it is connected via Wi-Fi? I found a few programs that looked like they might solve my problem, but they only seem to work when roaming. Also if anyone happens to know, is the battery drain much higher if I leave Wi-fi on all the time? I'm currently in the habit of turning it off and on when I need to use it, but if the drain is low enough I might stop bothering with the constant on/off switching.
Thanks in advance for any help you folks can offer!
PS: Are there any "must have" programs or tweaks that I should know about? Other than a few games, my phone is still entirely stock. I've looked over the "software worth installing" thread, but being new to Windows Mobile it's hard to know what is a slight tweak, and what is something that everyone should probably have.

Search for the "NoData" cab. I think it's from Modaco.

I noticed that one previously, but was under the impression that it only blocked data transfers when roaming? If that's not true, or it can be configured otherwise, then that should be exactly what I'm looking for.

I used this program for my wife's phone. It blocks your phone from accessing your carrier's data network. It turns the hardware off, I believe. Worked for me!

first you should turn error reporting off since you'll never get a message back for a fix as MS won't do anything about it half the time. And second you should be able to turn off the 3g in connection settings under communication in the settings menu. When you do that it shouldn't auto on. You don't need any software to do what you need for this. I've had mine since it came out and the settings have held up through the Tilt and the Fuze as well. Hope this helps.

There you are

Cingular GPRS connected but NOT!

I'm experimenting with push mail on my Cingular 8525. I'm not in an HSDPA area. I'm connected with either GPRS or EDGE (I haven't changed the registry to show me which).
I find that I can be connected for hours at a time: the "G" icon will appear in the signal strength area, and clicking on it will indicate the number of minutes/hours connected. The connection timer will still be ticking away happily but if I try to access a web page the prompt will indicate "Locating" until it eventually times out. Even though the phone says I'm connected the connection isn't in fact useable. What I end up having to do is Disconnect from the network and then I let a page request from PIE initiate a reconnection.
Obviously, for push email this is no good. I need a connection that stays up. I even have my push email client set to poll for new messages every thirty minutes, but because the phone says the connection is up, those poll requests will just time out when the connection is actually not up.
What is the deal with this? It would be 10000 times better if the connection just dropped properly if it is supposed to (timing out, network congestion, or whatever). Because then the push email client's poll schedule could at least re-initiate the connection every thirty minutes.
I have been considering trying GPRS Keep Alive (which pings up to 5 hosts to keep a connection alive) but I'm wondering why this happens in the first place? Why doesn't the connection just drop instead of hanging there?
I have been having the same issue with a Treo 750 and with my newly acquired 8525. The connection manager says I'm connected by I don't getting any mail pushed to the device. This has been going on for the last two weeks. The only way I can find to correct it is by a soft reset.
Soft reset? That's pretty extreme. I just have to disconnect and reconnect.
Why is that extreme?
Actually it's quite easy. Since I use push Active Sync automatically initiates a new connection at start up.
I think it's extreme because you shouldn't have to do that. All you should have to do is disconnect and reconnect. Of course, none of this should be happening in the first place.
So I installed GPRS Keep Alive last night. I guess that was a waste of $5 since this morning I see it didn't help. In fact, now I think I'm going to have to soft reset (!) as disconnecting/reconnecting doesn't seem to make a difference.
Since you're having problems on a Treo as well I would guess it must be a Windows thing. Are you on Cingular too?
Yep. I'm with Cingular.
I believe it's a Cingular issue.
I had a Treo 700wx with Sprint before these and never had the issue.
I installed HTweakC this morning and turned on GPRS Auto Attach and "Set Connection AlwaysOn." The first option attempts to connect to GPRS as soon as you turn the phone on. The second is supposed to (I think) stop GPRS from disconnecting.
Still I eventually lose the connection. So a $500 PPC device just can't do what a $200 BlackBerry can??
I'm surprised that no one else has posted to this thread. Maintaining a data connection is one of the most-basic requirements for a wireless device. Yet the Hermes/TyTn/8525/Dopod (whatever you want to call it) can't do this. And I guess, then, the same goes for the Treo?
I suppose this is why, in the end, a much less flexible platform like the overpriced iPhone will quickly succeed: you can be sure that Apple will make 1000% sure the phone can be used with wireless data...since that is the whole point. You know, just to remind the people up in Redmond.
Hi
Just to let you know that I am on Tmobile in the UK and I have the same issues. The data connection under WM5 was a bit more reliable but is hopeless under WM6. It caused me to downgrade from 6 back to the HTC test rom (WM5) just to get push mail working at all, but its not very reliable.
I agree that this is the most fundamental aspect of these WM devices and until it works reliably, everything else is a bit pointless.
I just hope that soeone can get to grips and solve this in the XDA live rom as I really like the new apps, but frankly I would give all that up for a reliable push and acticesync solution.
Rob
Hrmmm. So I guess this means that anyone with Good or BlackBerry push email service on these things (or any WM5/WM6 device) must experience the same problem.
I wonder if this app would help you?
http://commmgrpro.com/index.html
it's not out yet, but the developer is asking for beta testers.
Maybe if the connection is actually terminated rather than going off because it times out, the next connection will be good. Worth a try anyway I would think.

Wifi vs. data package

i just got the data plan (i got it for free until the 20th) and i really like it...i've relied on wifi throught all my ppc's and it's served well, but it sux being in an area not finding an unsecured connection...anyways, does anybody know how i can keepw wifi alive when i turn my display off? that's wat i love about the data plan, it keeps the internet on EVEN when the display is OFF...i couldn't get this to work on my 8125 and now not on my 8525..can anybody please help me fix this!!? thnx
anybody?.....
Didn't I reply to this already? Was it in another subforum?
EDIT: Oh yeah now I remember... your the guy that made way too many posts over in the cingular forums... did you get banned?
Don't forget to look at what I posted already about the keep internet sharing on and wifi... have a look around.
And also you can dupe ATT and get the MediaMax plan for 20 bucks if your willing to only use wap.cingular. saved me a ton of money
EDIT#2: yeah here's the other thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=341930
uhhh i never read that other post...maybe if you had better directions (or didn't even that answer the question at all) that woulda been better....no need for being stupid now buddy
here ya go smartie... use the search

found that, looks useless smart one..thnx for trying to be a genious tho
wow... you read all of that in 3 minutes? you're the genius here!
i said i saw it befor smart guy...and thnx for the compliments
Ok. I feel better. Guess we got off on the wrong foot.
What I am trying to say is that it might be possible to use the mortscript program to keep the wifi from going into standby:
"Share&KeepSharingViaUSB.mscr" Mortscript
This script is included in the attached .zip file To use this script you must first download and install MortScript from here:
http://www.sto-helit.de/index.php?mo...=view&entry=65
or here:
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1448
This is an adaptation of Xiou's Share&KeepSharing script.
It turns off Wifi radio, starts hacked version of Internet Sharing app, connects and turns WiFi radio on. Once one valid connection has been made, reconnects if Internet Sharing enabled status status changes to disabled (ie. a disconnect occurs). Also, keeps device from going into standby mode, to prevent loss of WiFi connectivity.
It's heavily documented so it should be fairly easy to view, modify and understand by looking at it in a text editor.
.....
So, it might, and I stress might, be possible to use this to keep your phone in a constant state of wifi. However you might not be able to put your phone to sleep.
It applies to internet sharing but could be applicable to your problem.
It might be a hardware issue where the wifi chipset is forced into disconnecting while sleeping.
Seems like when the HTC guys engineered this that they knew the wifi would kill the battery life so they hardwired it to disconnect when put into standby.
It looks like it's not easily done (looking here and at cingular forums). Perhaps the guy at cingy that said to untick the auto disconnect might have a lead.
However I am a genius, but only at the minimum IQ score..
Good Luck
lol kk, thnx for ur help but i think i'm convinced that i shouldn't keep it on as it does seem to waste battery power..thnx for ur help and srry for acting a bit off
just wanted to thank intrglctcrevfnk for the tip about the mediamax bundle. Just added that 19.99 plan to my account, configuered the phone and now have unlimited access.

Wing Connects to Edge Randomly

has anybody got this problems before!? it would just randomly connect to Edge even if i turn it off, it will be back on it again after some time
is this normal? i dont have a data plan so it worries me a bit.
I believe what you are seeing is the indicator that shows when you are in an Edge coverage area - similar to your bars that indicate signal strength for making calls (that are there even if you are not making a call). As long as you don't use any data you will not be charged for any.

What appz do you have installed? I personally had forgot to tutrn off the 'auto-update' feature on GooSync before and it auto-conected to edge (or attempted to anyways) on it's own. I believe you may have a similar issue with a app trying to phone-home or something of the like. . . . .
The good thing is, if that is the case, it's not going actually get to connect to anything (typically speaking) so chances are great you've nothing to worry about.
I don't have a data plan either, you can prevent your phone from connecting to edge/3g by installing this .cab file
"MoDaCo_NoData-SNE.CAB"
Here is a direct link to download it. After you place the file on your phone, use file explorer to open and install it. It's very simple.

Thank you everyone for your Quick and prompt reply.
I figured it out! it was my Email Account i had setup in my Wing, All i had to do is disable the Auto Send/Receive feature. For some reason after the phone connects to the edge network to check for emails it wouldn't or couldn't disconnect itself...

App to find out what's causing data connection to start?

Does anyone know of an app that would help me find out what application/process is causing my 3G connection to turn on randomly...... a lot?
I've gone through all the options i can, to stop any program that runs updates (Twitter, Facebook, Stocks, ActiveSync, Internet time etc) but the connection STILL randomly connects >.<
Any help appreciated!

Thank you for asking that.
Finally someone else who find that's completely "censored".
I give you official answers from my phone provider:
It's normal. To avoid receiving a big bill, you should buy a pack data download, so if it randomly connects, you are safe. Other users reporting the same and its normal and the data pack is perfect solution- No comments
I give you answer from HTC support:
Go into settings/submenu/megasubmenu... whatever, and check "phone usage" n(which only tells the calls usage by the way, not the data)- no comments
I give you answer from forums users:
Yes either try this wonderful application: x,y,z to know the usage : (its paying ones).
Or completely mess the configuration to connect to internet via your HTC HD2 "quietly brilliant" device (very quietly)...
Ok you understand, you're more or less screwed and have to accept that complete scam.
And apparently we are 2 in the world now, to find that's an essential feature, missing (another one).
Ho and to actually diagnose which one is using gprs... Hm we can't even control to say "NO never activate DATA", because the button automatically turns on (quietly stupid).
This cab allows you to disable all data connections...enjoy
My phone was starting data connections all the time when I first flashed a cooked ROM and had it set up with the SFR Always On data connection... On my stock SFR ROM it was called Full Internet but it used exactly the same settings but I didn't have the problem so I just tried changing the name from Always One back to Full Internet and it worked strangely enough... I don't know if that can help but it might be worth a shot .

[Q] Constant 3G traffic

Hello,
Its driving me nuts and I can't find the answer anywhere.
I bought an Ideos X5 and I have been trying every ROM i can get my hands on.
In all of em I find the same issue that I cannot resolve.
The phone is downloading and uploading stuff ALL the time. I do mean all the time.
If Data is enabled then the 3G, or H is up there in the staus connecting all the time.
Recently I tried MIUI and it comes with a firewall which I used to block every app i have but with no result. its still there.
I thought it could be because of the GPS being aided but I disabled that too.
Any idea? My data plan is being consumed by god knows what and its happening in every ROM available.

The fact that the icon is present at the top doesn't mean that it's doing traffic. That is just like the wifi icon, to let you know that you have 3G/HSDPA connection established. If you don't have any applications like sync, email, mms, browsing, games that go online etc, than your data consumption should be something like 100kbytes/day. I've got a 500 mb plan and with emails on and applications downloaded I never go over 70-80mb the whole month... So, I believe that whatever application you've installed on the phone, that is consuming your data plan.
BTW, this is a smartphone, which was designed to stay online...so you may have to look into upgrading the data plan.
Try droidwall at market. It can block selective app connect internet.

oh.... I thought that the fact that it was there it meant that it was connecting.
