Bad Reception on UK Vodafone - HD2 General

Hi all,
I'm on Vodafone in London, and i'm finding i'm getting really poor reception and dropped calls.
After trying out a few ROMS i settled on Energy 21903 build as i've found its the most reliable ROM. I've also tried Artemis and Energy 23569 builds but just found they weren't as stable and crashed at some point.
At the moment i've installed 2.07 Radio.
My problem is that it seems to take ages to detect a signal and sometimes it comes and goes. I also only get one days battery.
Has any other Vodafone users experienced similar problems and whats the best radio for Vodafone in London?
Cheers

Surprised you say Artemis is unstable, did you do a task 29 before flash. I found this ROM on Vodafone to be excellent. Try the radio in my signature, it seems ok for me but to be honest the best advice I can give is flash one and try it for a few days.

I found that Artemis works ok for a few days then i start getting problems like system hangs. I found the same thing with Energy at first but then switch to the older windows build and haven't had any problems since.
I'll give you the radio a go, but i just want to know if its my phone thats poor on reception or just that Voda are not as good as they used to be

i left voda at the start of the year as after 3 years with them the siginal strength was dropping everywhere and became none existant at my house on diffrent handsets

I'd love to leave them, but unfortunately took up an 18 month contract on November, thinking about my past experience with them was good. What a dope i am.

HI Guys
I have got exactly the same problem with the battery/reception on Vodafone.
I am using Energy May 13th 23569 GTX, with Radio 2.10.50.28_2, and also get 1 day of battery tops.
I have noticed the Phone stays in flight mode sometimes after losing the signal, which is quite annoying.

yo
i live in a complete 2g area and use the radio RADIO_2.10.50.19_2
but as you are london and probably get alot of 3G and H symbols on your HD2 it will probably help but as soon as i visit my girlfriends in lincoln and get H, my phone lasts 1.5 days ish but i am used to charging nightly
its something we have to live with man with these power hungry phones

Im on voda in uk - midlands
I use radio 2.10.50.28.2 and it seems the same as every radio i have tried - at home constantly dropping in and out, from 3 bars 3G - to flight mode and back again.
In work i have almost full signal and H 3-4bars.
Im not too worried about the battery its just the signal at home that pees me off!!
Ive tried (i think) every radio apart from the .51. ones - does anyone know which radio vodafone HD2 shipped with??

If you have bad signal at home, get yourself a SureSignal booster (check it out here)
I use the 2.10.50.28 up here in Glasgow, and I get occasional drops at home, but out and about it's usually always very good. Sitting right now with H at 2-bars.

We had Vodafone for our corporate phones at my last work, they changed to O2 after a month as so few users managed to get decent signals. That was UK-wide.

Vodafone and O2 share masts, so signal is generally the same in all areas of the UK for both networks. Of course it does vary slightly from area to area, and radio and make of phone matter too.

I think Voda just aren't as good as they used to be with reception. I think the phone must have something to do with it as well, but the general picture i get when asking around is that they're just not as good as they used to be.
Oh well, gonna try 2.10 and see if its any improvement.

Vodafone reception has been fine for years in all of my Nokia handsets but was so rubbish on the HD2 I was beginning to regret my purchase. Switched to O2 and reception is now fabulous, no regrets now!

Voda signal
Have to agree with most of the people who have posted on this thread. Voda reception is patchy at best.
At times I can be on full strength HSPDA, then for no apparent reason, I'll be in exactly the same spot and the signal just disappears altogether.
Though to be fair, I'm not sure whether to blame it on voda as I came from Three which got a brill signal in all areas, but that's all I really have to compare it too. We do use Voda 3G dongles on laptops at work...and they are absolute crap...lucky if we get a signal, and when we do they're slower than Slowy McSlow on the slow train from Slowsville!!

Voda reception seems to have got really bad this last 2 years they are even offering a home router to boost reception!!??(I think they missed the MOBILE phone part!),
having said that my TP2 had much better reception than the HD2..
I have also tried alot of different roms and Radios I am in Hampshire so not too far from London.... I am using 2.09.50.29_2 along with the cab for call quality fix it is a US Tmo radio, so you need to use with a TmoUS compatible rom.
I know alot of people are using the 2.10 radios but after many trials I have found 2.09 the most stable and best all round for data, reception and battery,
Hope this helps

The whole point of the router is to boost your signal at home. A lot of people live in bad signal areas, but have no problems elsewhere, so that is designed to help me get better signal at home, the one place you can at least do something about it. And apparently, it works very well.

Should I let the poor reception issue put me off buying one?

Hi all,
I am thinking of ordering teh Xperia from mobiles or o2 direct, having already placed an order for hte HD but o2 are taking a ****ing age getting it "approved" or delaying it for whatever reason.
Question is - although i like the look of the xperia i've heard a bad things about the reception and as I'll be using the xperia as a business phone *calls and synching outlook contacts/calendar etc. will the poor reception prove too much of a problem? I woudl only be getting the phone on the o2 network.
I use Vodafone, and I came from using a N95 to an X1 and have noticed a downgrade in signal strength.
I suppose it depends on where you live, if u have had reception problems previous then going to a X1 might be the same maybe worse.
I am absolutely loving this device. It’s taking some time to get used to, but WOW I have all but praises for this phone (apart from the signal strength of course).
My advice would be to get the phone over the internet or telesales. At lease then you should have 14 days to evaluate the phone (that’s what Vodafone UK do – I’m on the 4th day in now)
What I can say, is that the bars on the phone are a bit deceptive, and when it has none/1 bar, I can still make a perfectly good phone call.

I am on Orange UK and get FULL signal strength at home and 3 bars when out and about. I think that's pretty much what I expect from any phone. I really think it all depends on the network and your location, NOT the phone. O2 PAYG sim more or less the same.
Don't let other users experiences put you off. It really is a great phone!
It can still depend on the phone, but then on each separate unit.

I second this. Its an amazing phone, try it for 14 days and see if the signal will be a problem. It will get better, with radio upgrades and this rumoured antenna upgrade, but for now the signal is passable for me.

Damn I can't seem tofind it. It was just a rumor from another user for an antenna upgrade in January 2009 that SE were going to do.
Probably just wishful thinking.
I too have been rather put off by all the negative comments re: poor reception. Although my X1, now 5 day old, only shows 3 bars of reception most of the time, the actual call quality is fine - its just that I've become very aware of any deterioration in sound quality after reading the negative posts.
I'd echo what everyone else has said, try it for yourself & see what its like....just ignore what the phone says its reception is!
It seems this isn't an unknown problem with some other HTC devices and is often improved with a firmware upgrade (at the slight expense of battery life)
Paul
I have no reception Issues I have X1i and X1a in USA
I almost always have GSM, but 3g is sketchy. If you compare it to a nokia E90 with the same sim in, its always 2 bars less.
3G only and no problems with the reception. Most of the time 1 bar less than my old HTC Trinity, which had very, very nice reception.
i've been on to carphonewarehouse today and they say my lack of 3G is the xperia. when I stand next to a colleague with an iphone, they have full 3G and I'm stuck with crappy Edge! I've got a week to decide but at the moment it looks like the xperia is going back.
I suspect those people with good 3G don't live in the UK.
I get really good HSPDA (on Vodafone UK) whilst at work and it's not too bad whilst at home but I prefer to have 2g with Wifi.
I dont see a problem with reception compared to other phones using the same sim, it's hanging onto the signal that's more of an issue. It can go from 2 to no signal fairly quickly without moving the handset.
Comparing number of bars across different makes of phone is not sensible as one manufacturer may use more bars to show the same strength of signal.

Anyone Using TD2 on AT&T

I was considering going with an imported unlocked TD2 on AT&T and wondered how many are currently doing so and what your experience has been, I realize that I would not get 3G data. How is the phone on AT&T, on just Edge? Any issues?
Also did you have any problem keeping whatever current data plan you have when switching your sim card into the new TD2 or did you somehow get switched to the $30 plan "automatically"?
My friend got a EU TD2 recently, and had me help him set it up. Works fine on edge, no other general issues. He already had a data plan, but it shouldn't add one if you don't already have one. Kinda wish I woulda done the same as him, because I always turn off 3G on my pure to save battery, and its incredibly ugly.
Thanks, ya I want the 3G portion of the Pure, but feel it is to fugly to be honest, but really like the look of the TD2.
Has he done an upgrade to 6.5 rom yet?
No issues for me, other than poor reception. I have one of AT$T's Go plans, and nothing changed when I switched from my Polaris to the TD2, other than the drop in reception. To be fair, I live in a very marginal rural area - the iPhone I tried didn't work at all in my house.
That was the first thing I did. After using the Pure's stock ROM, you would too. Even though he wasn't using it, my experiences were just so horrible.
i have the D2 on AT&t and the reception is great now after i upgraded to WM6.5
i live in the USA and i havn't had any problems so far
Using the TD2 on ATT right now, reception is kind of weak in some spots compare to iphone and my old phone, but i still get full signal on the outside
edge works fine, slower than 3g but i dont really care becasue i pay for $10 data plan instead of $30
use the latest radio... that gave me the best signal and battery life so far
Those of you that are having problems with reception on the Diamond 2 and Pure I would suggest ugrading the radio if it's not the latest. I've had my Diamond2 since the day it came out (I'm on T-Mo) and had less reception than my old HTC Touch and less reception than others on T-mo. As soon as new Radios came out I upgraded and 2 months ago I upgraded to the latest at that time and I've been getting great reception.
At my familys buisness no one... no carrier can hold a signal in there. The best is Criketbut I can manage holding 2 bars now and sometimes 3 almost anywhere in the building and get full when I'm near the front. Before the radio upgrade I would get nothing. Even up front where my HTC Touch would get atleast 2 bars.
In terms of updating the radio, I am getting conflicting information...when you update a radio firmware in an HTC phone does it wipe out all the settings as do ROM updates (which sometimes include radios and do wipe all your settings out)?

No a radio update does not wipe anything out of your phone. Only a Rom update does. A Rom update does not effect the radio as far as I know. I've had the same radio flash forever and have flashed several different Roms.
Well on the Touch Cruise I did the last official ROM update and it also updated the radio version, so at least they are included with those updates some of the time. The important thing is that if you do a radio update on its own you do not have to worry about wiping out your phone!
Official ROMs will always include the radio, custom cooked ROMs do not unless stated.

[Q] UK Radio

Hi all
I'm currently using the Radio Version 2.10.50.28_2
I'm haven't had any problems with it whatsoever, but I was wondering if that is the best radio in terms of signal quality available for my location
I'm in London and my operator is o2 and do get pretty decent signal, but of course if there is a better radio suited for these conditions I'd like to have it
So is 2.10.50.28_2 the one I should continue to use or should I be using a different one?
RAdio
I am ORINGE customer using AxLor V 10 the same radio and everything is really PERFECT ! ! ! London area too ! ! 3G everywhere
Have to admit the 3G network is pretty decent, getting HSDPA as well =]
Guess I am on the best Radio
Radio's are always subjective. I personally find the best radio for EU roms to be 2.09.51.03_2. Brilliant call quality and decent signal. Looking at you're signature rom, you appear to be on a Tmous rom so in order to see that extra ram you'll need to stick to 2.**.50 radio's.
i am on vodafone uk and in a constant GPRS signal area. only time i get 3G+ is when i visit my girlfriend in lincoln then its constant.
my radio is 2.10.50.19_2. I use the Artimis V14 so the extra is not enabled tho i have tried other version 2.10 radios and get worse battery life.
With this one my phone is good for 1.5 days use. and thats with normal usage, net, text, calls to mrs etc.
i did condition the battery mind.

Radio Problems

Hey Guys, I just got a HD2 last night and I'm seeing a weird issue with the radio. While the phone is in one spot it will switch between 3 and no bars constantly this means marketplace and other apps just refuse to work. It was running the latest ROM out of the box which I've seen posts about radio issues.
Is there a fix for this?
Upgrade to 2.13 that fixes the radio issues. A lot of people have that issue and the latest ROM seems to fix that.

I'm running 2.13.531.1(90963) Release date 04/28/10 is that the newest?
Thats it - I've seen quite a few posts about radio issues even with the new rom on TMobile's forum. Since TMOBILE or HTC didn't provide a item by item fix list who knows if the radio was even modified. The only way to determine if there is a problem with the phone or the network is to take two TMOBILE phones and compare the signal/network in the same location. Haven't seen anyone really do that here. Would do it if I had another phone thats a non HD2.
Compared to ATT in my city Tmobile's network is VERY spotty. 3G coverage is strong to nonexistent even on the same road mile to mile. When its full bars 3G get about 800-900kbps on network speeds.
Go into a parking garage or building it will loose 3g. ATT's 3g signal is much stronger although their download speeds and internet speeds go from 1500 way down. Their network also feels slower - due to the number of IPHONES on the network sucking up bandwidth.

The new ROM has a different radio version number. I highly doubt HTC would issue a new version number for the radio without actually making any changes...somebody would figure that out pretty quick and they'd have some serious egg on their faces. That's the kind of shady business practice that companies take years to live down.

HTC HD 2 - Drops signal completely when held!

Just got my HD2 on Vodafone.
Signal is fine when the phone is stationary, but when I hold it.. it drops from 4 bars to either 1 or none.
I have:
- Disabled data/3g/hspda etc.
- Tried many different radio's up until 2.12.50.02_2 (which is an improvement but it still happens)
- Updated ROM to latest Energy Series.
Am I right in thinking the phone is faulty?... or is this common?
Thanks
Hehe, this is ridiculous. I believe HD2 has one of the best signal reception among the smartphones. My signal has always been great so I believe your phone is faulty. My 2c. Let's hear the others.

That is normal, our big heads are blocking the signal, but seriously, the "bars" are misleading, thanks to all those Cingular commercials , it really takes good signal quality to get a good connection, not good signal strength ...
So if the bars are dropping, and you cannot use the phone then that is a problem, but if the bars drop , and the phone/data/whatever works fine, then it is not really an issue ...
Just as an example, when I am at the college here, I have only one bar, but I am on hsdpa, and get like 2 meg of data, wish it was hsdpa+ but that is a diff story, and the phone works fine with only 1 bar, now inversely , people on VZ where I am at have 3 bars and their data is sooooo slow, and they drop calls ...
p.s. if it is dropping to none, check your area make sure they are not upgrading the towers, it is happening a lot and often here in the US in some areas ....

Yeah it's dropping to the point it loses signal, I try to call my mobile from my landline and I get the answering service.
What's really strange is, I just put a T-Mobile sim card in... and when I hold the phone, there's no bar dropping at all.
So in summary.
Vodafone Sim:
Stationary - 4 bars
Holding - drops to the point of no reception
T-Mobile Sim
Stationary - 4 bars
Holding - 4 bars

No it's not the US one.
So.. combination of hardware fault and weak signal?
wrong forum. this should be posted at the iphone4 forums.
the HD2 had to be one if the best reception phone and i am sure many agrees.
Just phoned up Vodafone to see if any problems, and they said there are no faults in the area at all. They said it was probably the handset but I explained that I had tried with a T-Mobile and Orange sim with no such problems.
They then said they'll send me out a new Vodafone sim card as they suspect that could be the issue. And that could take up to 5 working days... taking me out of my 7-day cancellation period, so naturally I said no thanks.
Going to head into my town center and pick up a Vodafone sim from the £1 shop... if I still have that problem I'm cancelling as I can find the same deal on Orange.
Question...
Has any one experienced a sim card being at fault for bad/dropping connections??? Seems complete rubbish to me, especially seeing as the sim is new...

that's weird.... vodafone do seem to be generally piss poor for signal...despite their claims of being one of the best.
Id still suggest letting that radio settle in for 48 hours our so.
