in regards to the wish list - XPERIA X10 General

Well all I can say is wow. I was expecting my X10 today but ill have to wait until Monday and now after reading the "wish list" thread im not to sure I will even keep it. To all you users out there is this device even worth the money? There are a lot of gripes going on there and I have to say that the negativity surrounding the Timescape and Mediascape apps are a real downer for me. Those are big reasons for me wanting the phone. I guess im looking for some positive feedback here from current owners.
Any thing??

You need to form your own opinion, personally I am more than happy with my X10 but there are a few, niggling issues which could be cleaned up quite simply (and in time I am sure they will be...)
I have friends with the Nexus ONE and HTC phones and they are jealous of my X10, the X10 has issues, but so do the other phones and within my group of friends we all agree that the X10 looks the best, performs the fastest and smoothest. Andriod as an OS still has a little way to go, but it is getting there...
Even with all my concerns, I have no regret in buying the X10, the hardware is excellent, it is beautiful to hold... The software lets it down a bit compaired to the iPhone but you do learn to live with it and I am sure it will improve.

First of all, you should note that only a very small percentage of users of most any product ever bother to post to a forum, and of those the vast majority tend to be the more vocal types in regards to comments, usually for the worse (frankly if you love your device and you're not a techy, you're not likely to bother singing praise all over the internet). I've been part of enought forums over my life to know this (and yes, I admit to being a vocal complainer).
With that said, I think the X10 is a fabulous piece of hardware (as I mentioned in my Wish List posting). Overall, I'm very happy with my choice. But that's not to say the product is perfect. You'll find a fair share of complaints over any other smartphone.
Software issues can always be easily managed through updates by the manufacturer or through using 3rd party apps. I know Timescape and Mediascape are key selling points of the X10 from SE's standpoint, but I think they've been neglecting how good the hardware is in doing that. Mediascape is the better of the two apps from my point of view, but that's not to say that Timescape can't be a great app to some people or to me even with some tweaking.
In the end, it'll come down to your own judgement. I recommend giving it some time to try it out and let the battery settle in. It's good to read and research a purchase before making one (I always do extensively), but it's very easy to get caught up in the wave of emotion from others and lose your own personal objectivity.

NEVER look in a board if u want to buy a piece of hardware!!
1. There are 100 people with 100 different opinions. U will get more confused the more you read
2. In an online board there are always more negative threads about a product than positive ones. Ask yourself have you ever started a thread about a camera that actually does photos? Or an mp3 player that PLAYS music? A TV that lets u WATCH TV? No? So the same here.
All i can say is that the x10 I a great device. A friend of mine has bought the HTC Desire but in my opinion the x10 is much better. When the first fixes are rolled out and the android 2.1 update is available this phone ist a kick ass device!

Well its my personality to become a little obsessed about devices, or whatever im into at the time. I would consider myself a techy, although im relatively new to android, which is why i pose the question. I have spent the last couple of weeks learning everything there is to know about this device so that when I get it I know exactly what to do with it.......sequentially. Little OCD if you get me. So when I join a site like this, made up of power users and devs and I hear them griping about issues it gets me a little paranoid.
Thanks for the reply's and I guess ill have to wait and give it a real go. Much appreciation.

Hi - It's my first Android too.. I've a few friends with iPhones and my Wife has a HTC legend (which is a great bit of kit too!).. but I wouldn't swap my X10 for either of them.. now I've got to grips with the battery life issue I'm moving on to other things.. like saltorio says.. the phones not perfect.. Timescape doesn't really float my boat particularly.. I'm getting to grips with Mediascape now and it's pretty good (other than the fact you have to create your playlists on MediaGo on your PC - unless you can dig out the base Android music player which is hidden on your phone and create them in there..)
The operation of the phone is quick and smooth and the camera is pretty good too. The photo light is a bit limited in it's usefulness.
Apart from anything else.. the handset is gorgeous and makes your friends jealous!

As you can see in the wish list topic, I have several complaints and wishes. But at the same time, this is probably the best phone I ever had, and definitely the best smartphone.
I don't know if the device is worth the money it costs*. What I know, is that there's not a globally better smartphone on the market. I used a Windows Mobile device before the X10, and at work I use massively the iPhone. Android is the junction point between Windows Mobile and the iPhone, the best of both worlds. So, go on with Android. Is X10 the best Android on the market? If you can live without multitouch (and I bet you can!) this is definitely the best Android on the market. If I would lose or broke my X10, I would immediately buy another one.
* Actually, I'm pretty sure that there isn't any electronic device that is worth the money it costs.

personally i think its a very good device. Most of the complaints i see in my opinion are babyish like not getting a device because of multitouch or because it has 1.6, and touch screen response which works perfectly fine on my device ( what do they want? to just think and the device responds? come on now).
Just play with it for a while and make your own opinion based on your needs. Most of these forums have alot of negativity from people that dont make phones.
Sent from my X10i using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

I have a long list on my X10 wishlist and many complaints about it too but I still love X10 more than Nexus One or any other touch screen phone I ever used. I had iPhone 3GS for over 6-months too .
Top 4 reason to get X10
1. Sexy looks
2. Beautiful screen
3. very nice UI theme (Blue)
4. Adroid

If you go to the Nexus One or Desire forums, you'll find plenty of issues with those phones as well. There's no such thing as a perfect phone, unfortunately. I've had my X10 for a few days now, and the choice between it and the Desire wasn't easy, but I won't be looking back because it is simply a gorgeous, excellent phone that is not perfect, but certainly good enough and I'm sure it'll only get better with each update Sony Ericsson puts out.

Sorry I forgot to outline that i absolutely love my phone but its my nature to want more. My battery is getting a bashing because i can't put it down, if i'm not listening to music i'm taking photo's, recording videos 50 mins long, checking facebook and tweeter or simply touching it.
Don't be fooled I've not been as happy with an upgrade for 6 years.

Well I appreciate all the feedback. Feeling much better about it now. I can't wait to get my hands on it!! I guess I let myself get carried away with my obsessions some times and ive basically been judging the phone before I even got it. But you must admit that in the short time since its release there is a absolute ton of info on it and most of it is people complaining about this or that. Ive gotten burned by Rogers with their return policy in the past and got stuck with a product that I wasnt' really happy with so im approaching this with caution.
Personally I can live with the lack of MT and considering all the positives that have been presented here im really looking forward to getting started.
Thanks again

Hero rushed out the door?

So after spending two days with the new official ROM I am dumbstruck that HTC let the Hero out the door as it was initially.
If you guys are like me you read online gadget blog reviews of new phones and you base your purchasing decisions to a lesser or greater extent on the reviews posted on these sites. The Hero received generally favorable reviews across the board BUT they were ALL tarred with the issue of the lagginess and unresponsiveness of the UI. Typical comments were "Sense UI is great but the hardware is not up to the task" etc. Hero was always compared to the iPhone and initially it was a more frustrating experience navigating the UI.
Clearly HTC have the ability to release software without these issues (new ROM proves that!) so why did they? I feel like they *really* hurt the sales and market potential of Hero and Sense UI by releasing an 'unfinished' product.
Can you imagine what Engadget's review (for instance) might have been had they reviewed a Hero with the new ROM?
I bought a Hero despite those reviews because I could see the potential in the handset but I know of others that steered clear because of the massive 'BUT...' at the end of most online reviews.
Its an opportunity missed I fear as the Hero is no longer a 'new' device.
I'm very glad that HTC have made my handset waaaaay nicer to use but seriously HTC... big, BIG ball drop!
Well... the Android phones are not really for the average Joes out there... they are for us techies and gadget lovers that love the freedom of doing cool and neat things with a phone.
We don't want to be tied up in an bondage game conducted/directed by a fruity company... and that is also why we choose a company we know.
Good enough?
You really thought we would feed a troll?
I honestly thought my post was a valid topic in a discussion forum about the HTC Hero.
@Thiesen
Wha?!? I really don't understand what your reply has got to do with my post. I think you've misunderstood the subject of my comments (perhaps if I had written in binary it might have been clearer?)
A broader acceptance of any platform is enabling and will benefit all users from 'techies' to 'average Joes'. Its not a matter of IF Android will become more mainstream but WHEN. I'm sorry if this makes you feel less special.
Troll indeed...
We're early adopters. We like to find bugs. We like to find glitches. And we take great pride in reporting them back to the devs and makers.
The average Joes just want things to work. They are not early adopters. They should get an iPhone then.

I'm sorry mate but i think thats total rubbish, you wouldn't buy a car knowing it didn't work and happily waste your own time feeding back problems to the manufacture to bring it up to speed. You wouldn't go out and buy a brand new state of the art car and happily put a new engine in it would you knowing the one you had paid for was crap?
AND might I ad, the research and R+D that is put in to these items is all reflected in the price of them. If HTC were giving these phones away for beta testing or what not then fine, but for a £400 handset, i totally agree with the comments made by ShiroEd.
I have had no end of nokia handsets where i have thought nokia have been guilty of the same issue, releasing what could be classed as unfinished products.
Personally, I always though the tech sites overplayed the whole lag issue on the original ROM. Yes it was there, but in my experience the net effect was quite limited and in my case it didn't really limit my ability to use the device. I'm not saying that the issue didn't (or doesn't! ) exist, just that in my opinion it was acceptable for a device of this nature (please no flames from those who disagree).
This may be because I didn't load my home screens with tons of apps, and one of the first things I did do with my Hero was to remove the People and Weather widgets, and set up Peep appropriately.

That would presume that the iPhone isn't possessed of the same issues that the Hero is/was. Google "iphone lag" and you'll see loads of posts complaining about lag on the iPhone, even for the latest OS and the 3GS.
In addition, you will probably find that the *vast* majority of people who've purchased the Hero have never even heard of XDA-Developers, and probably will never install another ROM. We are in the minority, not the "average joe" when it comes to Hero ownership!
Whilst I disagree with the OP, I don't think he was trolling.
Regards,
Dave

Agreed with crash. Thats just rubbish.
Entirely valid topic, and entirely valid point. Nothing remotely troll like about it.
Regardless of the people on this site, the Hero is definitely aimed at the average consumer, as a direct competitor in the iPhone market. Hence the multimedia, Facebook, etc.
Rushed to market I agree, but no idea why... Could just be lack of QA.
Many of the bugs reported here and elsewhere have been met with surprise by HTC, as if they really didnt know they existed. Do they not have a QA department that actually uses the phones in real life? Takes them home, plays with them, uses them all day and night to report the bugs?
Still, the update is great, the phone is flying now. If they could just sort out the crappy contact photo issue, the album caching, and the horrendous lack of bluetooth file transfer, I'd be a happy chap..
I think they shipped out the preview models and early review versions to people in the hope that they'd ignore any slowdown. Most of the review sites seem to have mentioned this in some form, saying that it can be a bit laggy but the final release could be good and the software shows potential - obviously it was never fixed for the first release.
To be fair, we're all early testers for the new HTC interface. If the Hero sells well and works well for everyone then we'll obviously be getting the same thing in future phones.
I don't think HTC is expecting any particular phone to be the next killer phone, they're just working on improvements with each new model.
While it does not make it ok... it seems to be the norm these days to get the product out and iron out bugs in a later release. As long as the quality is respectable, which I feel it was in this case, I can live with it. Particularly since the alternative would be to make do with buying an older model or waiting longer for the handset.

Just give us an example of one single gadget that was not rushed out of the door!
The iPhone? Hellooo, the original iPhone didn't even have 3G. Have you ever tried GPRS speed (Go to wireless settings and pick "2G only"), not even funny. Talk about being rushed out of the door!
and apple offered a free upgrade to the 3g version when it was released! So yes may have been rushed out the door but no financial gain in the long run.
Was this a free upgrade that did not involve commuting to a contract ?
If not, then its not free...
Zuber
the handsets weren't free in the first place... you want to split hairs then fine.
The uninformed might think Apple were so caring and generous that they were willing to swap out the phones for "no financial gain"...
You can say many things about Apple, but generous isn't one of them

Agreed However i thought it wasn't a bad deal as i have always thought the handsets were a rip off...coming to think of it the tariffs are aswell. I work for network rail and get 30% off all o2 shop tariffs and i still opted for the hero on orange which was a miles better deal!
(sorry for the partial hi-jack! )

Ok, I was one of the early adoptors of Hero. I got it right after its launch and I didnt really had too many complains about the device.
I never ever bought any HTC phone hoping it to be perfect. I always bought HTC knowing it will not be a perfect device out of box but community efforts will make it much much better device over time.
This applies to WinMo devices, and android. Why do we have xda here???
If you ask me, it's actually a great device. I've had far worse :/
I think people kinda underestimate how difficult it is to make good software. And how difficult it is to properly test stuff like this as well.
Next to that, it's always a comprimise. They want the software to be good, but also get the device out as fast as possible. The faster a (good) device is out there, the better that is for HTC in this case. It's a very competitive market, there just isn't enough time to keep working on the software until it's perfect.
The software should be 'good enough' and not perfect. I'm 100% sure they have a bugtracker or something else to keep track of major and minor bugs. At some point someone has to make a decision what will and won't be fixed before launch. And what shall be fixed right after launch.
For a new OS with a new UI like on the Hero I think they did very very well on the first release.
Now I fully agree with the OP, the lag/speed issue with the first ROM was not in HTC's favour. It was something that came up in every review, and people still believe that's a big Hero issue even while it's fixed. On the other hand, there might have been more important things that were fixed during development.
Usually speed improvements and tweaking stuff like that is something you do last. Other bugs and stuff has to be fixed first.
I don't think HTC rushed the phone out the door. The software was good enough so the phone functioned as a phone. It's a smartphone designed with the capability to upgrade the software. As long as the hardware is good quality, then you can work with the software and polish it as you go along.
I never really noticed the lag - it's only put to shame when you compare it with the new software. Look at the problems people are having with the iPhone 3.1 software release and you should be thankful that HTC have actually first delivered useable phone software and then improved it only a month after release. And HTC got some nice innovations to boot with the first release. They were perhaps a bit ambitious with the first release - where the phone did a lot of things when it first came out of sleep or switched screens, including the clock "flipping" animation.

Some of these bugs are quite known more or less right out of the box, for instance logging into the market, you couldn't do this unless you actually entered your google credentials when you first setup the phone.
People are going to compare the Hero with the likes of the iPhone, it's the only comparable handset out on the market at the moment. But what i'm afraid of is the lack of future support for the Hero, as yet another handset is on the horizon from HTC. OK, maybe Apple have got it right in respect of only having to supporting one handset (and very simalar firmwares, agreed) which means more time focusing on bug fixes and upgrades.
I hope HTC do not put the Hero to the back of the pile and focus on new handsets

Decided to jump ship.. switching to HTC desire

Who is with me?
With all the gripes that we have with this phone right now, including no 2.1 for a 8 months (by which time SE will launch a newer Android device and pay no attention to X10 owners) as well as multitouch, live wallpapers, hundreds of apps that dont run on anything less than 2.1 etc etc, I think its high time we hit SE where it hurts.
Bring on AMOLED, 512 MB RAM, native flash and 2.2 around the corner.
Who needs a 8MP camera. Seriously, all cameras on mobile phones are **** anyways.
The screen size is a tad smaller, but so is the phone (which is better in my books).
Any other reasons anyone can think of apart from the obvious?
Just about to flog it on fleebay/gumtree
You sound horribly insecure. Its just a phone. Relax for god sake.

Exactly its phone nothing more. Jheeze what a pointless thread.
I sincerly hope you are satisfied once you switch.
The X10 is as advertised and I am happy with it as is.
Im sure you are all very happy with the device at hand and this is probably not the best forum for this topic, although I know of a lot of users here who feel the same way about the X10 and would be willing to move away.
If not now, than a couple of months down the line, you will all be singing the same tune when most of the apps stop offering upgrades on the 1.6 platform.
Everyone's opinion is welcome and a forum (any) is the perfect place to express it.
I respect your opinion and your reasoning as it does have merit.
For me, this is my first run on Android.
I like the SE UI and the apps are secondary to me.
i'm with you. but i'm going for the nexus one. receiving that piece of sexy tomorrow.
I will wait another month or so, to see if we get it rooted. If not, ill be getting a 4G when available in the UK
boring htc phones
To be very honest i think Desire and Nexus are both boring not so well designed phones. They´re geek phones with no aesthetics. X10 it´s way more sleek, elegant and big! Froyo will come as well to the X10... just patience my friends. Who know we get the phone rooted pretty soon...
Don't let the door hit you on the way out!
seriously im getting tired of these "omg ive had it with this x10 gotta sell it" go ahead , no one really cares. coming from 2.1, i still dont care if the x10 is still 1.6, its fast, sexy and its just a phone! im all for root, and itll come. for now though people who dont sit at home all day in mommys basement are enjoying the x10.
i certainly hope puberty doesnt confuse you as much as your x10 dilemma.

anyone who is happy with the way the x10 is right now is seriously either super retard OR cant/doesnt have the money/whatever reason to switch to another phone. "ofcourse i am talking software wise " not the phone it self in general as i used to have X10 and i love the design of the phone more than my new nexus 1
anyway OP. i did the same yesterday, i bought the Nexus 1 tho. mainly because i never like the HTC interface and i figure that phones like nexus and motorolla droid are always faster to get updates " since i wont wait for htc to implement their software into the phone before updating.
the guy at the store promised me not to sell my x10 for a week " he is a friend " if SE annouce 2.2 by then or the phone get rooted " haha wtf i am thinking " then great i will get it back. if not, then the hell with SE. let them shove the phone up their @$$. or some unlucky mfer buy it
let us know if it hurts when yours drop too...wait there should be a thread for prepubescent b00ns...

Seriously just keep the x10 for now. Root will come sooner or later. You knew the x10 would come with 1. 6 then why did you buy it in the first place? If I have the patience to wait for 2. 1 or root then so does everyone else, unless you don't have a life and loaft around xda starting useless threads saying ur gonna sell your x10 for another phone. If so go ahead no one is stopping you. We don't need to know anything else. As far as I know this is the xperia x10 thread.

i'm going to be keeping the x10 for a while even after my nexus one gets here today.
i have faith in x10. but the phone seriously is limited by the OS. the nexus one's looks are a matter of opinion and mostly on taste. i love the way it looks but all the good features are on newer OS.
we all knew Android would be updated. but i don't think people expected the phone to have such a long wait for an update with an outdated OS. you get an android phone these days for the reason that the OS will only get better with updates. everyone sees the petition thread, right?
if OS didn't mean a thing and that it didn't have any issues for the X10, no one would be complaining.
Moving to another phone in the future?
Maybe.
HTC? No way ..
What else?
A new iteration of Nexus, maybe a better Galaxy S (one with flash for camera) or a Motorola Motoroi if they decide to sell it in US/Canada.
But really... HTC?
I'm sorry to say but you are crazy
Giving your X10 for HTC Desire/Legend or Nexus One is pointless.
None of them is as good as X10.

I agree with miguelsantos1979.
1st Gen AMLOED screens are not overly impressive, my friend has the Desire and he struggles to see the screen in direct sun light.
If you want to change the handset, change it rather then write a post like a spoilt child
Well, assuming that people don't have the cash to switch to another phone when they are having a X10 is the most useless comment I read here since I became a member, it's not about having cash my friend, it's about what you expect from something you bought and if the product suits you or not.
Fortunately everyone is different, I like my X10 eventhough on my X1 I was able to make my own themes and tweaked whatever I wanted. Ashame some games can't be installed because of the fact it is still running on 1.6, but that's not worth getting another phone for me personally. I will wait for the updates, and as soon as SE comes with the update, there will be something new to complain about. That is how it works in this fastgrowing technology world we live in.
Another point can be not everyone goes so deep in their phones as we do, and for "normal" people the X10 is fantastic as it is. SE want to sell big with this phone, so making it to complicated scares of the average customer who just buys a phone based on the looks of it, and you have to admit, the first time you had the X10 in your hand, it was looking good
Just relax and take a beer after you bought yourself another phone
Cheers,
Arnold

My review of the X10

Here my honest review after a couple week of use, I wont talk about the current update issue to 2.1 or 2.2 since I want to talk about the device in is current state.
Pro
-The design and quality of the device is very good in my opinion, it does fell very solid and simple to use. 9/10
-The screen is great, color, response, size and brightness make this device ideal to watch movie on the go or surf on the web .There is no multi touch so far, but honestly I don’t think it’s an issue, the screen is very responsive and work like a charm. 8/10
-Camera 8.1 megapixel, I was not impress at start, strange flash manner and picture quality not as great as I was expecting. Then I did play with the setting, it made a crazy difference. Picture now are crisp even in low light condition, details are nice and seriously now I can see myself use it as my main camera now. The flash always on don’t really matter, since its only turning on when you are about to take a picture no big deal and it really does help ,since the focus can adjust itself properly with the light already present then. Bottom lines don’t be shy try different setting play with the camera you won’t regret it. 8/10
-Call quality, while not the best is quite acceptable, I can hear people and they can hear me pretty well to even in a noisy environment. It’s certainly not perfect, but still better then most of my previous device.
-Multimedia, the sound quality is great, sound level is decent and with a proper headset will give you a great listening experience. I tried the same Mp3 at 320 kbs with my Sony MDR NC22 on different device, itouch 1 and 2 gen, Iphone 2 gen and my ipod classic, I did not see any difference .Video playback is nice and fluid and will definitely better then the itouch/iphone for the quality of the picture. 8/10
-Application, most of the normal user will find happiness, yes there is an apps for that, you will find apps for stuff you did not even know you could need before. Lots of apps are free or very cheap to buy.
-Connectivity, Nothing crazy there the device perform like it should, Bluetooth, wifi gps is quite standard now on most devices. They work quite well and you can expect them to work the way they should. 7/10
-Keyboard, some people wont like the oem one but in my opinion its not an issue since a dozen alternative exist and the market and you will definitely find one to please you. Swype won me and I would never use anything else now. 8/10
Cons
-Sony Ericson support, luckily you have lots of great online forum to find the help you need, otherwise you will be stuck in some mindless phone conversation and crazy back in forth email. 1/10
-Software update, the blame here is part fault from SE part fault from Carrier let me explain. Major upgrade coming from SE are very few, their road map is very limited so far, still they do make small update to fix most of issue the device have, problem is, most of carrier don’t push these update .Some like Rogers don’t even plan to make these small update available to their user , waiting on the big one to do anything. Carrier is the main issue, even if SE where to release 2.2 on the x10 tomorrow , 80% of the population will still never get it unless they temper their device. 5/10
If you did keep up with my awful French Canadian writing, I can say this: Overall it’s a great device; most of people will be pleased and won’t regret their purchase.
SE did not made any false promises so far, the unit came with lots of great feature and the quality of the hardware definitely will matter more then the Os shortcoming for most user. The rest of the people like me will expect a little more from their device and might feel frustrated to see similar device from other brand doing more with similar spec. I still wish SE to be more proactive and to understand the need of their entire customer, not just the lambda one.
Its all depend of your need and expectation, even with a technically outdated Os the device is quite stable, and unlike other mobile I had in the pass. It’s been on for 7 day now, not a single issue; SE did a pretty good job in that matter.
In a practical view, this device might not be great for game because of the lack of multi touch but as a work phone and multimedia device its definitely is a great contender. More users friendly then the blackberry, can handle heavy load of email, don’t look like a trendy toy like the iphone and still discrete while looking fantastic.
good revieuw! nice to hear sombody who is happy with the device.
instead of the bashing posts...
I'm very happy with my x10 as well, i have the white one.
and the overal experience is same like your's.
Hi. Think you've got it pretty much spot on with the exception of one small point about SE not making false promises... They said over four weeks ago that there would be a software update 2 weeks from then.... And still nothing in the UK. I'm on a factory unbranded handset by the way.
Other than that I'd agree with your thoughts and I too love my new toy!

hey, yeah but thats not SE faulth. they released the .16update.
but in my country (belgium) its also not avaible. don't know why tough.
i have also an unbrandet version.
The .16 update came out ages before they made this announcement.. the update referred to in the announcement is different.. and how can it NOT be SE's fault?>

when SE release a update its possible that the carrier don't wanne release it.
because they don't think people need this... so SE release't the update but some SE user's don't get the update. people go to SE there for
but i taught it was about the .16 update. so my mistake.
i hope the update will come soon then!
and give SE a chanse, they made statments that they will provide plenty off fw update's for the x10. so i trust them, but iff they ditch me now its bye bye SE!
I still wish to fight for the 2.2,still a SE tech told me carrier was a major problem, since they want to test each update before implement them. Therefore most of them to save cost just wait for the big update 2.1 .
I have to be realistic,we wont see 2.2 this year because of this but i do still believe in the petition i started, just the goal have slightly changed,i just want to make sure i will receive the 2.2 .
Still at the end of the day,no matter what SE will do if company like ROGERS continue to screw up their customer nothing will change.
I got my handset from "Phones4U" in the UK and it came unbranded so it should get updates as soon as SE release them.. I think if anyone is really desperate for the updates then unbranding is the way to go..
i am wondering why he review on a forum that only Xperia 10 user would come usually.
It is very simple. For canadian who have no access to American's market (meaning those who don't want to brother buy phones off Ebay or anything else).
Xperia 10 is the best choice around until next year May at least.
Canadian technology catch up at a rate slower then turtles walk across a street.
You are not going to expect iphone 2 nor Evo 4g coming to canada this year to the very least.
Causes most of the user will search online and read quite a bit before buying any device and American market? What the hell are you talking about?
There is quite a choice on the Canadian market; most of carrier carries a good selection of android device.
Last times I check every major city have shop selling unbranded and unlocked unit for people not wishing to buy online……

[Q] X10 Owners... X10 over Samsung Captivate?

I swear this is a serious question... I have posted here and not the Captivate forum because I really want thoughtful responses and not smart-ass answers.
After over a year's wait, the X10 is finally coming to AT&T tomorrow. I've had only Ericssons and Sony Ericssons since 1998. I have always been a fan of SE designs and loved having a unique phone. Perhaps earlier this year I would have immediately jumped on the X10. However, the Samsung Captivate has generally received higher scores, and on multiple reviews, has also been named the best Android phone on AT&T.
I am trying really hard to like the X10 more than the Captivate, but can any X10 owners offer compelling reasons to go with the X10? Please assume the 2.1 update arrives as planned. I understand this is objective, but I really just want the "best" AT&T phone.
So far, my main reasons to go with the X10 are:
1) I love SE phones.
2) I've loved SE cameras, and the X10's appears to perform better than the Captivate's.
3) The camera flash/bright LED light has saved me in more than one situation throughout the years.
4) Mediascape seems to be highly regarded in most of the reviews I have read, and I plan to upload music, pictures, and videos to this phone.
5) I personally like the X10 design more than the Captivate.
Also, a few questions before I play with both phones tomorrow:
1) Does the lack of multi-touch really make a difference?
2) Does the UXP act as clunky as reviews have said it does?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
Christian
In my mind x10 is not the best smart phone out there.
It has a os version behind others and lack of mt
I not sure is 2.1 will improve the system as i never tried b4
but if u not a hardcore gamer den mt is not a problem for you.
Lack of mt mean can't play game like pspxdroid smootly
And Samsung Captivate is really a powerful mobile but the power usage is higher too.
X10 is the only phone i know that your phone can last u a day without much worry that your batt will run out till the end of the day if you control your batt usage well.
And i just love the design of the phone i think is the few design that score toe to toe with iphone 4g and that why i go for it. And the problem with all the older os compare to htc/samsumg cause x10 have a sony UI design where making it different. I love the background at the setting page compare to the normal black background (just make you think it not customize before)
But if you got the chances to hold both phone i believe x10 look really great especial the white phone=)
Note: Some other user said: Buying a smart phone is like getting a wife. =)
it never going to be prefect in any way. But if you love it? that good enough.
Hope you pick the right wife for you=)
You already put up 5 good reasons to get the X10 so it sounds to me like you already want it.
As to your questions:
1: Multi touch was impressive when I tried it other phones and was a big negative against me getting the X10, but now that I got the X10 anyway the controls work just fine for me.
2: I'm sure the user experience could be better, I don't like everything about this phone but it seems pretty good overall. I would say as just a phone, the X10 needs some improvement, but as a data device it does everything I need.
my opinion
hi im from australia,
we dont have the samsung captivate but we have the samsung galaxy s, and i curently own the SE X10 which i chose over the samsung galaxy s.
i work in a telco shop so i get to play with the galaxy all the time and ive compared it to my x10, and i chose the x10.
this is what ive notices about the 2 handsets.
X10:
the battery life in the start was really bad, but as about 2 weeks passed, the battery actually started lasting longer, must be just because it was new and just needed a few proper charges.
the original software that came on it was a bit laggy an had a few problems with it but im now on the (26) software and its working great
i personally dont care for multi touch and not so much about games either (i have ipod touch and i play all my games on that.
although i have quiet a lot of games on my x10 and they all play great,
i use vignette as my main camera app and the photos i get with it are spectacular you may check them here http://img375.imageshack.us/g/20100710160347439.jpg/
i prefer the screen of the x10, yes i know that the galaxy has a supper amoled, ive had the omnia II i8000 which had an amoled screen and really dont care for it.
with the update the phone will be even better and faster. at the same time as much as i hope we get 2.1 soon and 2.2 following i really dont think that numbers matter too much, i got the phone because it did what i wanted for me.
now on to the GALAXY S:
great supper amoled screen,
16gig internal memory
multi touch
2.1 and soon getting 2.2 which will make it as insane phone especially for games (if thats what you want)
but one thing ive noticed is that when ever i use our store demo which has the latest software and all the same apps as my x10 (i set it up in the same way)
the galaxy s seems to lag a fair bit over time and requires a reboot to fix that.
the only thing that the galaxy has that i really wanted was SWYPE KEYBOARD and i actually got it on my x10 and its working great.
at the same time i see a lot of people buying both these phones, and no one as of yet has come back with problems with them,
i dont know if ive helped much in your decision but i just say pick one that has what you want
To answer some of your questions:
UXP is quite good. That being said, Mediascape should make you change your mind. It's definitely good, but not good enough to die for. You will find better picture viewers (JustPictures) and media players (Rock Player) in the Android market for free.
Captivate has multi-touch, SAMOLED and newer Android. However, it's build quality is weaker.
Multitouch doesnt matter in most apps. Pinch and zoom isn't really a big deal. However, some of the games require multi-touch. Once again, it isn't a deal breaker, but it is important enough to be considered.
Btw, Amazon will be offering X10 with contract for 50 bucks. What is the best deal you can get on the Captivate?

Some of the images captured from stock camera, you will see lot of variance in quality due, reason being user.....

There's one reason I would not recommend buying a SE phone, cruddy customer support and a desire to have people update to latest phone rather then keep developing older models. They try to make the customers pay over and over for the same stuff, look at the way they treated PSP users who got the new model.
Sony doesn't get enthusiast smart phones, HTC and Apple do; they know that regular on time updates are important to us. That's who I'd be buying a smart phone from. Sony cater to the mass market uneducated customers who dont know how to upgrade their os or don't care.
Upshot, we will get 2.1 very late, we might get 2.2 when everyone is getting 3.0. I'll eat my hat if X10 will get 3.0, by then SE will see it as cannibalizing sales of their newest phone.
Also, x10 lacks the 512 ram that's talked about as likely prerequisite for 3.0. So, it's a well built phone with a limited lifespan. I'd go with an HTC phone for android, they get smartphones and have a prooven track record. Samsung are new at this game, so we will see. The Galaxy build quality is much poorer than SE, HTC or Apple.

1st Sony and Sony Ericsson are two different companies.
2nd we have plenty of firmware updates but no OS updates. We will have one very soon now. HTC have made a lot more Android phones. This is SE's first and i think they did a pretty good job as well.
3rd there is no prerequisite for Android 3.0. Google haven't said anything about that.
I'd say go with what you really like in your hand and to your eyes. Both are great phones and you will get over many of the cons with either phones with help on several forums.
I owned several phones in the last 3 years and started to like to SE designs more ever since I owned W910. Recently, I owned Nexus One and iPhone 4 but settled with X10 mainly for how it feels in my hands and for the looks.
It has quite a few annoying functionality issues but I got around them after a week or two. I have the white X10a which makes it even more special.
99% of the time I use my phone to make calls, text, googleTalk, Maps, and Browsing. So, MT doesn't even come to my thoughts and 1.6 feels fine.
Some apps that makes X10 even better
1. ADW Launcher
2. CalWidget
3. Beautiful Widgets (Paid App)
4. Weather & Toggle Donate (paid). You don't need if u get Beautiful Widgets.
5. Switch Pro Widget (Paid app)
6. JustPictures (I use Smugmug so, it rocks)
7. MixZing Media Player
8. Data Counter widget (if you don't have unlimited data plan)

1) SE is owned 50% by Sony and share lots of board members, marketing etc etc. It's for all intents and purposes a subsidiary company,
2) Yes, firmware updates that FAILED to address basic flaws in the phone, and would have been unnecessary if they rolled out 2.0, 2.1, and we should have 2.2 by now. Instead we are hoping that maybe we can get 2.1 - 6 months late. The phone is well made, no argument, not quite up to Apple standard, but definitely better built than other top tier androids.
SE won't learn if they treat customers like **** and we take it. I'm not sure that they can change their corporate mentality enough to make a difference. It's a massive multi-national, X10 is one of millions of other products ranging from bog rolls to rockets, they will never care as much about any individual product. HTC makes smart phones, they can't afford to get a bad rep, this is good for us, the customers. Even Apple have more at stake with the iPhone. I fear Samsung will head in SE's footsteps, but, I haven't heard much about them either way. Sony has a reputation for spreading their customers' butt cheeks and ramming **** in.
3) The 512MB RAM pre-req has been floated by a number of sources, it will give SE perfect excuse not to give us 3.0; almost like it's been planned...
Also, another reason to avoid SE, we had pretty little progress on hacking the bootloader. Sony are fanatically against modding communities on their products - I wouldn't be surprised if it's never broken.
All in all, if you've already got X10, and it's working fine for you - I wouldn't rush out and sell it. However, you can get better phones from more customer friendly manufacturers nowadays; I would NOT buy a new X10.

i think that you will have to choose between a good build quality and lack of software upgrades (SE) and moderate build quality but better software support (samsung). I would go with the first choice but there is little chance that the bootloader will be cracked so no custom ROM to compensate SE laziness.

I'm sorry but why the **** did you get a SE phone for in the first place? You seem to really hate SE down to the core and yet you support them by buying their products, seems very strange to me. And SE has been totally open from the beginning with the OS issue and you should very well have known what you purchased, if not, the only failer here is you and not SE. And just look at the magics they have worked on 1.6! The only real difference from 2.1 is a tidy bit slower kernel and no live wallpapers, appart from that SE really did transform 1.6 in a fantastic way and i high hopes for further releases.

Here's the 1.6 vs 2.1 difference:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.0-highlights.html
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.1.html
Although, I agree with you that SE have made 1.6 a LOT better than the stock version.
And I think we'll get 2.2 at least because of this:
http://twitter.com/SonyEricssonUK/status/15260820648
But, when we'll get it, is the problem.
@CinCa0989
I would choose the Samsung Captivate if you want to play 3D games on your phone, due to its better gpu and multitouch capability.
I would also choose it if you want the latest software, whatever it is.
If you don't care about 3d games, multitouch or updates, get the X10.
Also, choose the X10, if you like taking pictures, and want better-looking videos. It will have 720p recording soon (by Q3 end), and an LED is better than no LED.

Don't apologise for SE, you sound like someone in an abusive relations who takes any scraps thrown at you as evidence of "love." He hits me 'cause he loves me... SE took people who paid for a premium phone for a ride, no excuses, premium products should come with premium support. I don't hate SE, they are big corp acting like big corps do, but I don't have to like getting shafted.
TBH, I got it for my GF who wanted a decent camera; she used it for a couple of weeks, said "what a piece of crap" and got an iPhone 4. Although her beef was more with the flea market, sorry, android marketplace and the OS rather than the hardware - well she had some pretty strong opinions on the lack of multitouch. Since I need an android phone for work, I ditched my MT3G and hanged on to the XPERIA. I actually think there's a great phone struggling to be set free in there; if we could get 2.2 & ditch all the Sony crapola we'd be rocking.

Hey guys no need to be rude. The OP asked for personal opinion and not smart-ass answers .As far as "what a piece of crap" goes did you mean the camera is crap or the phone? In my opinion X10 has one of the best camera if not the best available in Android phones.
Yes the camera is as good as they get. My only issue is lack of mic levels so it's hard to record gigs without clipping.

How did I forget Handcent? Maybe I use it so much that I feel it's the default Messaging app. Need to check out how the default one is .

An interesting observation - SE using cat-string theory as its main business practice

i am a business management student...so i thought of sharing my perspective over how Sony Ericsson is playing the smartphone game...
by exagerrating a lot before the product launch ...and after the launch..giving small doses of updates so customers dont change phone in the hope of getting new features.
think of it..
they build great hype for a product months before the launch by strong advertising (probably spending more on ads than R&D itself) , promising a revolutionary interface with ground breaking custom interfaces....X panels for X1 (remember?) and timescape/mediascape (biggest garbage) for X10 ..both over-ambitious
just so they can differentiate from other companies..
ya they have great product design.. which initially attracts impulse buyers...they build anticipation...so we cant wait to get our hands on their phone!
and then they finally launch the product which will NEVER have the latest updates because their entire focus was on marketing the product i.e bringing it to market before competition and capturing market share.
they never really focussed on industry shaking R&D like Apple..c'mon without Apple, touchscreen was a dead market.
and without Android...Apple had a monopoly.
This is revolution....not timescape or mediascape..which are my least favourite apps...battery sucking with extremely slow response rates.
then they ll keep launching small small updates over couple of months...more like over a year...adding little features..so we dont change brand loyalty....giving the wounded customers a faint vision of hope...
finally they release a small update and the entire community goes 'wow' with excitement...like a virgin getting his first blowjob.
by that time..the phone has suffered scratches, has started showing signs of wear..which means very low re-sale value.
and meanwhile announcement for newer model is made...slimmer, sexier with more bugs which will be fixed via update over the next upcoming year.
good strategy for a short-term profit making....but they are losing brand loyalty.
i am not gonna buy SE Xperia Arc...ya its the sexiest phone on the market.
but its like a hot model u bang and can never have a healthy relationship with...coz she is dumb and full of flaws on the inside...such as daddy issues etc.
/rant
its like they keep us jumping over small small updates like a cat does to a string which the master will never let it catch.
but its like a hot model u bang and can never have a healthy relationship with...coz she is dumb and full of flaws on the inside...such as daddy issues etc.
epic comment
well it's true and from your perspective which one is better?
i know getting a big income is the main focus of any company but hey customers loyalty also counts. it's something i hate from sony in general, they keep pushing new tech every year and let the customer to feel outdated

Funny thread
so what do you think about HTC's strategy with Desire ( Desire/HD/Z )
Just because they released a better handset after a year of the previous handset's release it doesn't mean that they do not care about brand loyalty...
so what? you want them to stick with the X10 for two years while other competitors advance with technology????
believe it or not, many will buy the ARC, even more that who bought the X10...
Next time, go buy an HTC or Motorola
and by the way, Samsung is locking their bootloader so do not buy a Samsung android so you won't end up whining like many here about unlocking it, unless you like samsung
but despite all that, I would like to thank you for the effort made by you to explain what many of us are not aware of.. it's a good practice for your uni
good luck mate with your studies

I understand your point, but I just don't think that SE is somehow different in their approach from any other company producing consumer goods (is that right? stuff which are bought in great numbers just to be replaced by newer models...you know, we have to watch out for our English, right iead1? ). Thats quite important because we just can't expect infinite support for our product, because sooner or later (the former is more probable) it will get replaced with brand new model with brand new stuff inside making it lot more attractive. The only thing we can complain about is, that the support may have last longer... thats true. But despite all of that, I'm still not changing the brand loyalty as I just dont know what else should I buy next time. I dont like Apple and their iStuff, also don't like HTCs because of how they look. Samsung is an option, but if I should choose between Samsung and SE just by looking at the phones, SE would definitely win (and with Samsung locking their bootloaders as well, I wouldn't help myself much by buying it). You may call me a hardcore fan of SE who doesn't think about what he's buying, but thats not me. I just think that X10 was an unfortunate mistake (which I personally still love!) of SE and I really hope they will learn from it for the reasons mentioned above.
Thats my opinion and I do not force anyone to share it, but I wanted to say it, because I just don't uderstand all that poeople saying how betrayed they feel by SE.
i think SE`s problem is that they don`t really know what they do,at least so far.
they use UIQ for a while then they leave it.
they use win mo,but after x1 and x2 they desided to go for android.
but now Android is very good platform and they should find their way.i hope so.
their main mistake is that they don`t care about customers and the weak points of their products.
I must add my mustard ...
There was a time long ago, Sony Ericsson created really nice phones with a solid build quality. My x10 is 3 weeks old and is making crazy noises when twisted a bit. The whole frame is not stiff enough.
If I saw it right on arc video presentations at youtube, the crappy timescape is now a widget and it is still choppy. This uggly blue is still there. Why blue? SE colors are Green and Orange. What a bunch of stupid designers ... I think w'll have a lot of alternatives out there with lesser crappy UI-Mods.
Well, I agree with most of your points, but let's remember: they're not ceasing support, they're launching a new model and planningto lock x10 customers in outdated Android. Motorola intended to do that too, but customers did such a big buzz that they changed their minds. The bull**** about low performance on Android 2.2 is already discarded, we can see that on all the unofficially built ROMs available at xda-forums. I risk to say that even Google has his part on this entire drama. Obviously, Sony Ericsson and their UXP loaded with much more processing hunger than x10 can support is the one we should blame, because we chose to buy SE, not Google devices (which are HTC, actually ). The removal of MediaScape from Arc tells us that they know where the problem is. Let's hope they fix this "problem" on x10 too.
I truly hope no one takes my comments personally, since I'm just expressing my opinion as a SE consumer. I still like them, but not how they use my money.

Apple Iphone 3G is still getting latest updates - same day as the latest iPhone 4, not ALL the features because it's got old hardware but there aware of that.
SE should be aware of it to, yes x10 can run 2.1 2.2, 2.3 ect so they should. There opinion is why there not updating. (why not the majority, the users decide)
Why can't we get hardware based updates? HTC magic/hero got tons of updates..
Yes new models will come out, but it's the same OS to update, not that much off a difference, our devs do there work in spare time and takes 2-3 weeks to come up with ASOP OS, (which is what i prefer anyway). Imagine an entire DEV team full time? yes it takes more time for testing ect but still.....
At least SE have reconized they F'd up. that's the first step!

They say a lot. Saying and doing are not the same.

I think they removed the mediascape app because it was so hard to new people to find the music player and photo gallery.
just think about it:
you have a new phone, and you would like to play some music, you first go to the music player but you can't find it because there is no music icon on the menu
Grab a samsung phone and try to play some music, the player is called "Music", the video player is "Videos" and the gallery is "Gallery"

You are comparing with 2 companies with different calibers.
Apple - every designer/ad agency/design house/design school in this world purchase their 'godly' machines for work purposes. And these macs don't come cheap, mind you. With that amount of revenue, they can afford to create an iPhone, using their 'lagless' (yeah, right) macintosh reputations to breed a colony of iZombies to support their cause.
With the iZombies having the need to own a iAmagodlyproduct, with such supporters pumping money into their pockets, they can afford to offset any losses by being nice to
Update old iPhones even if new models are out, cos they know iZombies are already impressed with them playing the nice card and that they are confident that with their good reputation and a better new phone out, A majority of iZombies who have too much money to spare will still buy it. They are just giving an aww-I understand-you-can't-afford-a-new-phone-yet-so-I-will-update-you-periodically-so-that-you-will-come-back-to-me-when-you-have-money message to the poorer parties.
Now for Sony Ericsson (or just insert any other brand names). Let me ask you. Though they are an established brand, but let me ask you, how many people will own 1 of those expensive TVs or VAIOS? Comparing with Apple, no competition.
They don't have that much extra revenue to play nice. They can only strategize and try to earn as such as possible before their products become obsolete.
It's just like people like Donald Trump, who has so much money to play with, he can just give away to some random person on the street if he wants to. But if you try doing up a business yourself, would you give away your money to charity organizations, knowing that you cannot afford to spend the money that way? Most probably not. Unless you don't mind closing down your business due to losses.
All these threads are getting sooooooo repetitive!!! There should be one big sticky for anyone who wants to ***** and complain in any way shape and form about SE. That way this form isn't flooded with every thread turning into a SE bashing thread. It really is getting tiring logging on to see what's new and the first 50 threads are people *****in about SE.

Lonelee - agree with much of what you say.. but it is also true that there are many many many people who go back time and time again to buy the next apple product BECAUSE they know that Apple will not leave the OS lagging behind on the old device when a new one comes out.. it's spectacularly good brand loyalty. SE (and many other) are taking a very short term view, and a missing a great opportunity to get us all on the hook for the next product..
In the UK for example, many phones bought on contract are free with a 2 yr contract tie in.. so if I know that they will look after me for 2 years, then I'll go back for more.. my contract's not due until Feb 2012.. so I'm eagerly awaiting to see their behaviour over the next 12 months!
well I m back on XDA after exiting from blackberry platform...blackberry provided me a stable messaging device for a while but as needs changed, it was very poor for browsing and getting work with attachments done.
i was at a party few weeks ago and my friend took out his Xperia Z claiming this is the best camera phone.
to his disappointment, it was the darkest blurriest pic i have seen whereas my lumia 920 took a pic with DSLR-like clarity and image characteristics.
i am not sure how much sony has improved but seems like they are still a market follower and using marketing dollars to brag about their phones that do not perform as advertised.
after having wasted my student savings on 2 of their phones, I regret and wish I had bought a better phone for my first android experience.
product lifecycle
Hi,
I am not sure if I should blame any company for moving to newer (and maybe better) products. In the android phone market we have the nearly unique situation to be able to get our hands and minds at the software which is driving the product, at least partly.
This is quite different from cars or coffeemakers.
What I would like to from Sony is that when they decide to abandon a product (eg X10), they open up the sources of drivers etc, so that interested people can maintain their products for themselves.
I can understand that they wont open up the sources for current products.
A.
