Starting to regret buying a nexus one - Nexus One General

I know I shouldn't post this here just wanted the devs to maybe respond so we know what is holding up the fun.
I am not a jerk but what happen to the nexus one. We are constantly seeing devs going back to the g1 porting tons of new items into the roms while my nexus is still using the same old same old.
what happened to the fm radio for desire? bluetooth to work on desire? sony x10 roms? etc etc?
all i see lately is a bunch of modded kernels that all seem to be tampering with the processor way too much.
I am just starting to feel like my 500.00 phone was a waste to root.
thanks to all that have done great things for nexus, just kinda was expecting a little more.
regards Ian

so you expected the devs to make your phone worth $500? thats not cool.
also in case you haven't noticed the n1 runs 2.1 which is causing problems for ports which ran 1.5 or 1.6.
You are going to have to wait for a dev to get a desire to get the info needed to get the bluetooth or radio working. And that is assuming they are exactly the same which they probably aren't.
And as you stated above this doesn't belong here. It should be in the general section.

Really?
People keep porting stuff to the G1 because there are a ton of people that have that phone... and it still kinda sucks. I used either a G1 or a MT3G for the last 10 months. Now that I switched to the N1 I feel like everything just works the way I always wanted it to on the G1/MT3G. What more do you need?
The Desire ROMs are better than ANY port to the G1. Yeah there is a thing or two that isn't perfect, but WTF, man. It's damn good.
Cyanogen is near perfection. I keep toying with it trying to find **** wrong with it and... nothing. Obviously there's some cool stuff out there but why don't you buy some time looking for the coolest apps you can find. Use your phone... don't tool with it.

I didn't want a Desire I wanted to buy the next highly supported phone by the Rom community.
I am not *****ing I am simply asking what is causing the dry spell.
Is there something the Devs know about a new powerhouse tmobile phone around the corner so they dont want to waste time or updates coming that change everything soon.
I am not bashing so please everyone stop being negitive.

Seriously? The day I bought my HTC Tilt 1, I hard-spled it, and put in a custom rom. Why? Because I got it almost a year after it came out, and the stock os was slow as heck, and custom roms were always better and faster and so on and so forth.
The G1 has been out for over a year and a half. The nexus has been out for 3-4 months. There is a LOT more known about the workings of the g1 than the nexus, there are a LOT more people with a g1 vs a nexus, and so on and so forth. If you wanted a g1, you should've gotten a g1.
I bought a nexus, and I haven't rooted it/unlocked the bootloader or any of that. I haven't felt the need to - Stock, the phone performs light years ahead of any prev. phone I've owned, and I see no reason in rooting it that would add something I don't already have (that I need). It looks good, it works well, it's fast... it has even converted me to using a touchscreen keyboard (in both landscape and portrait) with no regrets whatsoever.
My advice: Give it time, and be patient. Either that, or learn to code and hack roms, and do it yourself. No need to be ungrateful towards those who ARE working towards what you feel they should have done already.

I know what you mean. I'm still waiting for Cyanogen to make my Nexus shoot lasers...

Honestly , I would have to agree with you man. I was led to believe that the potential was going to be endless with this power house we all have bu , the only thing that has REALLY come out of rooting that was good is the wifi tether and USB tether. Everything else is pretty much stock.

Um did I ever say I was ungreatful?
I had a G1 as I stated.

Dude, you can't compare a port to a phone with less than half the specs to having the real thing.
The g1 is like a pitbull, big and meaty but slow as hell. Nexus is like a grayhound, fast as hell but you can still do a bit to improve.
I for one am happy I upgraded. This is just one of those times you should have kept your mouth shut. (or fingers as it is)

Well, the saying goes...if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself.

Dont take what he said literally, It did sound like you just bought the phone hoping the Devs would take care of you and make your buy worth it. They are all doing what they can with whatever resource available for them.
You might think the Devs are slacking coz they still havent fixed the bluetooth/FM radio problem, but incase you havent noticed these ROMs are still in the Alpha and Beta stages, and they are called that for a reason. Come on man, you dont expect the Devs to perfect a ROM from a phone that hasnt even come out yet, or just came out?!
The G1 has more development, thats because it started as CUPCAKE, a lot more updates came after that, so a lot of stuff for the Devs to play with... But even with the best possible ROM you can flash in the G1 it will never compare to the Nexus! not even a stock Nexus.
P.S. I'd be glad to trade you my G1 for your N1. Just holler

No offense but this phone was only released barely 4 months ago. I think it may be a little unrealistic to expect certain hacks to be perfected already. You should try excercising little patience and enjoy your phone for what it is, a great piece of technology. I am running Cyanogenmod 5.0.6 test3 and I am loving it! Go check out the Magic forum and talk to some of the people who have a Rogers Magic or Magic+, I was one of them and they still don't even have root! How about the iPhone 3GS with the latest fixed bootrom? That may help you appreciate the simple things that the N1 offers(Unlockable bootloader out of the box sans warranty). I am sure people are hard at work on features you may want but I am sure these devs are prioritizing what they feel is most important and that may not agree with what you think is priority. Enjoy your phone becuase it is a great phone, if not sell it ebay you can probably get a good return on it.

LoL. Patience, My Young Padawan.

Well what were you expecting??? Sounds like you were just dead wrong on what to expect.
Root doesn't give much to the g1 as well, it just enables you to access /system/ and su permissions. One can say that the g1 needed to have a **** load of tweaks to make it run better, while the nexus is just an updated and better optimized phone.
You can't even compare running 2.1 on a g1 with that on a nexus.

You should have just kept it stock then. lol. And then made a thread about how your 500.00 phone was a waste to buy in a first place. Why not sell it on ebay to get some of your money back?

Last attempt at a positive thread?

I'm waiting for my N1 to be delivered.
Is it me or is there a plethora of worrying issues with the N1? Reading through various forums there seems to be issues with nearly all aspects of it from screens clicking to poor performance and software quirks. I can't seem to find any more positive threads and its starting to freak me out.
How does the N1 really compare to the iPhone/comparative-phone as a complete product? Both hardware and software quality.
Honesty would be much appreciated.
Most of the hardware issues should be resolved, you should not see dust, nor clicking screen etc. Software patch is said to be coming this week or so, and should resolve most of the glaring launch issues with 2.1.
As for comparison, I think you'll find a lot of former iPhone and now happy N1 users, the hardware is VASTLY superior currently, and I've never really seen a performance issue regarding the N1, its seriously wicked fast.
Theres worry
Then theres those who have their phone. They dont come on the forums much anymore like myself cus I'm too busy playing with my phone
People with issues are much more vocal than those without.
I have had none, not one, nada, nix, zero of the issues that have been brought to the fore in here.
I must be extremely lucky or the problems aren't that prevalent and, as I've said, the few are more vocal.
SC
I've had my phone since day one and it has worked better than I would have thought, specially because of all the complaints. Don't pay too much attention to them, the phone is awesome and will only get better!
I too lucked out, other than a few screen calibration re boot issues mine is running perfect! Love this baby. And the screen and speed can't be beat! Well worth the 500 some odd bucks. I paid!
hope to order mine by the end of the week and i have felt the same way you have regarding the negativity but that still hasn't made me have second thoughts at all about getting this phone, just the "i hope this doesnt happen to me" in the back of my mind. definitly agree with others that people are a lot more vocal on negative issues and i'm sure when i get my phone i wont be refreshing the general forum 600 times a day like i am now
This phone is awesome.
You really owe it to the N1 to flash a custom ROM though. Get over to Modaco, flash the ROM with Highmem and JIT enabled... it quadriples available memory and double's stock CPU speed! I lie not!
At some point I'll upload screenies of my Linpack results before and after custom ROM flashes.

I received my N1 the day after announcement and I've been very happy with the purchase. Solid device without any of the common issues.
If there's one thing to put your mind at ease is that on topical forums the loudest voice is usually the one that requires assistance or advice. A member that has no issues will likely remain a lurker. It's a very false impression of the landscape. Google sold somewhere around 20,000 N1s in the first week so consider the ratio of problem handsets to working handsets and how often someone will start a new thread just to say nothing is wrong. It rarely happens.
I still don't believe that figure of 20,000 anyway. I think it was much higher. That is based on apps that were sold in the first week... an odd way to try and figure how many units where shifted, but Google wont release any figures I don't think.
I love my N1 and have no problems with it, even with it being rooted with a experimental ROM.

Yea, I've been the same. Worried. After all this negative feed back, well the only thing really irritating me is the dust thing. Is it yet fixed on newer phones? Other than that, these other problems don't seem.. important.
I replaced two iPhone 3G's with N1's.
Wife took the first one I ordered and she's a diehard Mac fan, and ever since discovering DoubleTwist on the Mac and as an Andriod app she's very happy.
My phones are all stock (even though I'd like to root 'em), for now
Waited a long time for a powerful fast customizable device like this! It easily replaced my 2 WM PPC's.

Why does everything have to be compared to the iphone?
Read the specs for the iphone, then the N1 and search youtube. Not too hard right?
Or maybe search the forum and read the other 1,000 post that are the same as yours?

what rom are you running?
I don't have any lag... I'm running Pancake (1.5) without Sense. It uses Gbhil's custom kernel with pretty nice settings, so I always have about 60MB free (no lag). I also put the Darkstar theme on it, so it looks nice even without Sense.
fixxxer2008, you've started so many threads about how you're tired of this phone or how you want something new and you just seem like you complain a lot and you want fulfillment from others and agreement that they feel the same way. You're a senior member and all, and you've been here for a heck of a lot longer than I have. But that doesn't mean that you can whine about your phone this much. If you want to sell it, then by all means sell it. But this is about as good as it gets right now for phones. There's a little bit of lag, yeah. There are weird hardware instances where the phone bricks itself. Hell we can't figure out how to change the color of the time in the toolbar.
But the HTC Heroc/ Droid Eris won the about.com award for best smartphone 2010. It's the best phone available on sprint right now, and it heralded in the debut of Sense UI for android.
If you don't like it, then stop complaining and do something about it. like sell it. or make your own ROM for it. or smash it against a wall, post it on youtube and let us all see. Words are just that; Words. They don't really do anything in real life
I'm not trying to call you out of offend anyone here, I love this community. But posts stating 'i hate my phone cuz it's not perfect' don't help progress move forward at all.
Damage control couldn't be any faster. The title says it's lighting fast and from what I've seen t literally is that. I haven't seen ASOP run any faster on my phone. So if DC is any indication then the 2.1 release will be pretty quick, or the ROMS built off it at least will be as fast.
For what it's worth my wife also has a hero, and she's on stock 1.5. It's slow as hell. I reflashed mine to update my PRL to fresh 1.1 and IT was slow as hell (though much faster than stock). Then I went back to DC 1.0 where things are instantaneous.
So yes, if you're still running 1.5 then it's likely going to be slow. Also try and remember that it's one of the first Android phones. It's going to take time to work the bugs out of the OS and the 2.1 ROMs do a damned good job of speeding up the operations.
Yeah I saw if you want FAST, got to DamageControl. It's just ridiculous

Hum im running fresh 2.0b and couldnt be happier..fast runs great..I agree regardless if your not happy.. by all means get something else.. but since u have had just bout every sprint phone in the current roster..then maybe a dumbphone whileu wait for the N1 may be in order..lol but im sure by the time the N1 comes out u will find something else wrong with it.. so not really sure what to tell u.. find a phone and live with it.

so how much you want for it
so since this thread really doesn't have a point...

Does anyone else here feel... empty?

Most of our devs are gone. They've run off to the Evo portal and ebayed their Heroes. In turn, people bought their Heroes on Ebay and we will have a flood of noobs coming. We probably won't have a rom update from a major dev ever again, and... it makes me feel empty inside.
Darch is still here, Regaw is still here. Not sure who else is.
Toast and flipz have said hero dev will continue, just slow. I think jschi didn't jump ship either. And he is a genius

Heh. Look at the bright side: now other people can take over the reigns; and trust me, some people here are more than capable at doing so.
Don't feel empty, but I am a little upset with HTC. They've pretty much made us dependent on the developers here. I would be fine with stock roms, but it's pretty clear that HTC is pretty much done supporting the Hero. 2.1 is it and the update comes with its own issues that weren't in 1.5.
I got an Android phone with the assumption that it would be supported with the latest updates at a faster pace and for much longer than what I'm seeing by HTC. It makes it pointless to ever do another contract if I'm going to be stuck with a phone that won't get regular updates from the manufacturer. I'm not sure if I would get another HTC phone.
I hope Sprint gets the Nexus One.

It won't. They pulled a Verizon and told us to buy the Evo. Plus, the Nexus is an HTC phone

there is nothing to cry about. the fact remains that the hero is a great platform for dev. myself and others are still quite happy with this phone and will stick with until our contracts are up.

^ this and i am thinking that devs from other areas will step into heros now that they can pick them up much cheaper than before the evo was released. look at some of the older phones, they are still going strong in the dev department.
i am not worried even if i end up with 'just' darchdriod as my daily rom for the rest of my contract (another 6 months or so).
cheers... or rather cheer up!

I'm not that sad... lol. I am, however, sweltering, tired, and need to turn my AC on. Darchdroid is the best OC rom out there, and RegawMOD is the best NON-OC rom out there, so I think we are pretty good in the dev side of things.

That sucks. I forgot the Nexus was an HTC phone, but I was mostly referring to getting phones that don't have Sense. They usually are updated much faster.

The Hero is sort of the unwanted stepchild of XDA now. But, all the first-time Ebay adopters are coming to our "rescue".
I cant do what flipz, damage and darch do. Just naming top 3 roms.
But i can put things together and fix broken things. Ill be stuck with my hero for quite some time. So im always willing to collaborate with others to get something working.
Also im sure we could ask a few questions here and there to the main devs for advice and help. No matter what phone they currently use.
I think we have almost everything we can think of, OC, roms, JIT, themes etc.. I think that covers all the big breakthroughs for are hardware restricted phones. But we can always improve on them, many here are capable. So yeah it sucks these big names left but im honestly not worried about the future of the CDMA hero.
Save up and buy an evo.
This is just how the phone loop rolls, once theres something better , you don't go back.
I will be keeping my hero, but yeah look at it this way , XDA devs are not the only ones dumping the phone , so is sprint.

Most of our devs are gone. They've run off to the Evo portal and ebayed their Heroes. In turn, people bought their Heroes on Ebay and we will have a flood of noobs coming. We probably won't have a rom update from a major dev ever again, and... it makes me feel empty inside.

I don't know why the EVO still does not have full root that can support custom recovery without a computer and since it doesn't have full permissions you can't pull stock apk's and wifi tether does not work. So you can be happy that you have a fully customizable phone for now.

It does have "full root" but the storage has nand locked/protected. It's like that little switch on and SD card or floppy to protect it only its software not hardware theyll break it in a week or two. You can pull apks in recovery... and WiFi tether needs a netfilter kernel so give em a week and it will work.

Well Regaw should be back at it soon and with you here it should all be ok anyways.

I have a sickness ...

I have a sickness ... not sure what it is called, or if you would even call it a sickness.
Here I am, staring at my Droid Incredible, after having just "un-rooted" AGAIN. I have had this phone since June, and I LOVE IT! I love the fact that you can do so much to it and tweak every aspect of it. It keeps me interested and busy playing with the phone. I have rooted and un-rooted so many times. I have loaded so many different roms with different themes. I am starting to get to the point where I wish I could find a good setup so I can just leave it alone and use it normally, instead of "hacking" it once or twice a week. It sucks! I can't leave it alone. I read about so many cool updated or new ROMS and feel I want to try them out.
Do any of you have the same issue? It is difficult for me to be satisfied so I am always changing my phone. I am tempted to just give it up and get a dumb-phone that just calls and txt's, and maybe get an iPod Touch for music, browsing, and games ... but I know I will end up jail breaking it and tinkering with it. It is a waste of my time! LOL
Anyway, just wanted to vent for a minute to see if it helps me.
I want to find a good setup and stick with it. I am sick of wasting my time rooting, romming, unrooting, etc. I can't help it though ... it's so much fun!
Thanks for reading.
im the same... but i find it normal if you are changing roms every week... i mean normal as in a "normal" rooted user.
isn't this the very reason why we use android though? if we wanted a setup that "just works" and never changes we would all have iphones. apparently that crowd can live with the same setup for 2 years (not that it's really changed since it's debut)!! how can they NOT get tired of looking at the same ole thing for that long?!?
anyways, unless it's ruining your life... keep doing what makes you happy.

Thanks for the inspiration.
I think it has something to do with my OCD as well. Trying to find the perfect ROM/KERNEL/THEME that will give max battery life and performance etc.
Maybe I should just limit myself to once a month.
I always go between CM6 and Virtuous, and sometimes branch out to another ROM but always go back to the two (CM6 & V). I go to Virtuous for the stability and familiarity, and go to CM6 for something different than SenseUI and more experimental.
I just mostly get tired of having to set up my apps and settings over and over.
Thanks again.

yeah, that can get tiring. but what is nice though is that after you are all done setting up your new ROM you can backup and it's saved. It's like saving different "Scenes".
Diddling the Droid
Yep, that's what it's called by some.....
I'm there with you, continuous tweaks and mods.
Of late, I've mostly been goofing w/ different kernels - like the Redemption Rom pretty well. Beyond that, I'm seeing what difference(s) [if any] the larger sd card makes.
Even watching fewer college football games (actively anyway) on Saturdays.. blasphemy ...to mess with the phone....
There is a support section here on xda for your problem just search for it the thread is really funny.

I tried jail breaking my ipod touch. Just as useless as before. I finally got it to take a theme which is ok, but removing their bloat ware no go. Just for kicks and giggles I got it to load an android battery charging themed page. LOL! But for customization the android platform is the best. I love my Incredible!
This is very true for me too. I just didn't have the humility to post it.
Where is this "support" section?

These things are just high-tech crack pipes, and ROMs are just downloadable crack rocks, and rmk40, ihtfp69, kingklick and all the others are just a bunch of crack dealers. This site and the other Android dev sites are like street corners - I'm checking them on a daily basis looking for fresh crack. The analogy breaks down when considering that none of this costs any money (other than voluntary donations) which just fuels the addiction. We're a bunch of crackheads smoking free crack and can't get enough. We definately need a 12 step program around here and a "Droid Incredible Rehab" forum section might be a good idea ;-).
rmk40 is releasing Virtuous 3.0.0 tonight or tomorrow so that'll be the next hit I take. Time to stock up on steel wool.

I, too, have the sickness.
Yup, been there too. The thing that finally snapped me out of it was when my girl got angry with me for always being unreachable because I was flashing one thing or another.
I've since settled on Virtuous, as the stability just can't be beat.
The question really is: What is the point of your phone?
For me, my phone is a communication device first, entertainment second.

Ive had my phone since june like the OP, I stumbled across this website 1 day and since then honestly from that day, ive not left my phones rom, radio, or kernel alone for more than a day. I too wish I could just leave it be, lol. Sometimes I wish It would fall in water, or drop hard enough to break!

LOL you hit it on the nose there. Before I even read this thread, when I saw the thread title I knew what it was about. I love my setup (ruby 1.1.1) but I am itching to install something new. I wake up in the middle of the night and start fiddling with my phone, wondering what else I can install or change. lol
I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Thanks for pointing this out. LOL
So, I decided to load Virtuous back on since it has all I want, including stability, which is most important. Everything works plain and simple. Besides, I use LauncherPro Plus so it's nice to have a stable ROM underneath it. The dev for Virtuous is very active and updates a lot, so I get my "hits" frequently. LOL

Ah! [email protected]!

My Goodbyes .

I know I didn't contribute to making this device a success but I just want to tell you devs in this forum thank you. You guys have been so awesome this pass year and you guys have taught me so much about life in an odd way. As I get ready to give up this device I just wanted to let you all know you are all awesome and I'm glad that I stuck around long enough to see new devs rise ( Dastin , Matt). That just goes to show you, this phone never dies. I will always remember you guys names and all just don't ever forget me. and I will always be lurking somewhere in the shadows .
See ya, you will never be forgotten!
long live the heroc!
I didn't want to start a new thread so I'm posting here. I'm outta here and by here I probably mean all of xda because I went to the dark side. Gonna try an iPhone for a while. May be back on Android after 2 years, but maybe by then we'll all have cochlear implants and not need phones at all.
Thanks to all the helpful people here and of course the devs who kept my interest in my old hero for so long.

Your gonna go from the guy who had a the feed of when a new cm nightly was ready to an iPhone? You gonna jailbreak it? Haha
I'm moving on as well. After 2 full years with a hero I now have a E4GT and it's everything I dreamed a phone could be. But like so many others, the hero started me on all this rooting non sense and it will always be "my first". Thanks to all the devs, jaybob, aosp, nfx, toast, darch, zenulator, and all those guys who moved on along time ago. Maybe I'll se you around.

Yep. I just reclaimed the twitter feed that was the HeroC bot the other day too since they aren't doing nightly builds anyway. I like the iPhone (fast, well built, I love it's flat on both sides too) but it's too restrictive and I'm a little frustrated by that. It'd be nice if they had a similar "share intent" api. I'm probably going to jailbreak it but I'll wait a few weeks until they get the bugs worked out. The jailbreak isn't out yet but should be any day now.
