Is there a next generation of phones similar to the G1 with physical keyboard? - G1 General

I love my HTC Dream but i am just curious if there is a new phone that is better than this with a physical keyboard.

(Edit: I assume you are in the US or Canada)
Right now the closest we have is the Droid.
I would own it, but it is on Verizon.
That the best selling Android phone is a slider should tell the manufacturers something, but they seem to be stuck on the iPhone clone form factor for some reason.

the imbrics M1 looks pretty promising, it comes out in a few weeks/months and looks pretty sleek. Google it and see if you like
Edit: Here are some pictures and a video. That is an old article though, it is getting a snapdragon 1ghz and android 2.1, but it is not coming with 3g bands(yet, as no carriers have adopted it)

Looks OK-ish, too bad the keyboard on it is retarded. The keys aren't supposed to be lined up in a grid like that. The ASDF row is supposed to be offset by a half key to the right of the QWER row, and the ZXCV row is supposed to be offset by a half key to the right of the ASDF row. Instead, this stupid layout places them in a hard-to-find-what-you-want grid.

Unless they re-make/model the G1 itself....
there will never be another keyboard build as sturdy as the G1,
I wish they would though...release a real G2 (not a mytouch)
but a real G2, same as the g1 with better hardware and same great keyboard

There was never a "G1". There is only DREAM.

And if we want to get technical there WAS a G2, the HTC Hero
So what you want is a more powerful "G1", NOT a G2

My wishlist:
All of the standard Android features plus:
Easily rootable
1 Ghz Snapdragon or better
at least 512 MB ram
at least 512 MB rom
FWVGA 3.7" AMOLED or better
raised 5 row keyboard with dead space and keys shifted properly (exactly like the G1 is great)
3.5" stereo jack

Any rumors on release date for the Nexus One Pro?
The Galaxy S Pro looks quite nice... It only misses on the resolution (WVGA vs FWVGA), ram (256MB vs 512MB), and judging from the supported spectrum, it looks to be targeted at AT&T (the evil Android gimpers.)

I don't know what you guys are talking about, the G1 keyboard was ass. That was the only thing that was actually worse coming from my old Blackberry was the keyboard.

You must have different fingers to everyone else.. The Blackberry keyboard is usually cited as its worst feature. It takes me 10 minutes to write my name on that horrible little cramped mess.

Since "my old Blackberry" matches quite a few different devices, I am just going to mentally mark your post as trolling and ignore you.
Feel free to amend your statement at any time (you can edit it, or post a new post, your choice) to bring your post out of troll status and I would be glad to respond.

With that said, I wouldn't have minded seeing one keyboard improvement on the G1. I would like the keys to be raised just a bit more. I wouldn't change the layout, spacing, dead space, or anything else though.
Anyone else have some *constructive* things to say?
Bad:
G1 Suxxors! Keyboard is ****e!
Good:
I don't like the keyboard's dead space, it should have been spaced just a bit further apart. Also, I don't like the placement of Alt key taking up two spots.
Phandroid poll shows 85% of those polled would rather have a physical keyboard:

So far we have 2 phones that are released (Cliq and Droid) and two phones that are unreleased (galaxy s pro, and nexus pro) any others?

You're disappointed before even giving the phone a chance. I've played with and/or had many different types of "high-end" devices and to me the G1 keyboard is by far one of the best for fast emailing/texting. Yes the keys could be raised a TID more but this doesn't hold it back in my eyes. I came from a Blackberry 8320 to the G1 at launch and never looked back. I thought I was fast with the Blackberry but couldn't even stand using the Bold 9700 keyboard for 10 minutes since owning the G1 . Unless of course you do enjoy texting with the tip of your finger/fingernails.
Having said that. The myTouch Slide actually has a tremendous feeling keyboard. I LOVE my G1 keep in mind and after just 10 minutes with the Slide I was ready to get mine before the launch .
Those specs truly do not speak well for this phone as something has been cooked up in that ROM to really make the phone just zip. I was stunned.

Hero VS Samsung Galaxy

Not trying to start any fanboy stuff here its just I was dead set for the Hero until I came across some info about the Samsung Galaxy.
For those of you choosing the hero over the galaxy what are you basing that choice on? It seems on first glance that the Galaxy has better spec with regards to the screen - OLED, Storage - 8GB, Battery - 1500....
for me the only pro for the Hero is the Sense UI (which can be ported possibly) and this board. I must admit I missed the board whilst on my Symbian experience over the last year.
I am still leaning towards the Hero (I am not even sure why) but which are you choosing and why?

Hero - Always like HTC devices, they just seem much better in terms of build quality (all bar TP2, had 4 with problems!).
Support on this in invaluable.
Tefflon coating!
I like the chin - don't shoot me down, I really do like it for some reason.
Haven't seen the spec on the Samsung, but the last few Samsung phones I've owned, I gave them to my mum!

Even though the Samsung Galaxy has better specs, I prefare the Hero because of the UI, the design of the actual phone, and the fact that its made by HTC, I'm not a fanboy but because its made by HTC it will be supported by this website and the Galaxy wont be.
The Galaxy has only 128Mb ram where the hero has 288mb. nuff said.

Hmm it was confirmed on some italian sites that the galaxy has 192mb usable by apps. Which probably means its has the same or very similar total ram.

screen (AMOLED)
storage (8GB Internal)
battery
still havent seen pricing for the galaxy yet though...

COZ DEFINITELY I'M HTC FANBOY
After working with the EzInput 2 onscreen-keyboard on my little Diamond, the reason for me for going with the Hero is the keyboard-software. The rest I don't really care about.
The extra widgets and 7 homescreens and such is nice, but not really 'needed'. But the onscreen-keyboard is what you use more and more and more... being stuck with a commercial application or the stock Cupcake keyboard would be a deal-breaker for me. The HTC keyboard is far superior to most out there. And from what I see they made some handy changes to this android version (picking the correct word from 7 suggestions is nice and fullscreen, finger friendly for example) and the color coding in the suggestions.
For me going from 2.6" (Diamond) to 3.2" (Hero) will be heaven when typing .
That and the posibility to use Compact Qwerty and even the old phonepad-block (1 through 0 numbers) with T9 makes it possible live without a phsyical keyboard.

true, very true. Was thinking about going for an Xperia or Blackstone because they are relatively cheap now.
But if I have a new phone I want a new experience. After years of WinMo phones, and after a year of cooking and tweaking for the Diamond... getting a TouchHD would seem like I would not get anything new. It would feel like 'a bigger diamond' within a day I guess...
.. must be my gadget-vibe, I don't know. But I've set my sights on Android + HTC Tweaks and I'm curious how it will work out

hero: transreflective screen (amoled SUCKS outdoors)
I still don't know that the Sense UI is going to be a bonus for me... I'll have to look more into that feature. The main reason I'm leaning towards the Hero is time frame combined with a potential discount: the Hero is already out, plus the rumors say it will be on the AT&T network which means I may get a discount on the phone since I have an account with them.
If the two phones came out around the same time and neither of them were on AT&T, then I would be leaning towards the Galaxy.

Agree with that. AMOLED displays in the sun are practically useless. Inside they are gorgeous.
Spent some time in Las Vegas on business and my Nokia N85 was almost impossible to use when standing outside. My N82 (always take a spare in case of theft) was more than useable.
Keyboard on Hero is fantastic as said above... the two things you're going to be using most are the screen and keyboard.

HTC Leo = The first decent HTC phone in a long time

Disagree with me, if you want, but for a very long time, I found myself with a lack of enthusiasm for HTC's various phones. In-between all the various 'meh' releases, there were some nice phones, but they were always nice for only a few reasons. For example, the Touch HD was nice because it had a large display and supposedly better speakers. The Tough Pro 2 is nice because it's a Touch HD with a keyboard. The HTC Dream was nice because it's the first phone to use something other than Symbian/WinMo/OSX.
Now, however, for the first time in a very long time, an HTC phone came out which I can give more than one or two compliments about. This phone is of course the HTC Leo: http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/14/htc-leo-spotted-in-the-wild-sports-gargantuan-800-x-480-display/
Let me list all of the great things I personally see about the phone:
1) 4.3in WVGA display (that surpasses even the Toshiba TG01)
2) 1Ghz Snapdragon processor; I don't think much of Qualcomm, but an upgrade is an upgrade
3) 320MB RAM
4) Dual LED flash on 8MP camera
My God, those specs are simply awesome, and best of all, it uses my favorite OS: WinMo. More importantly, the specs is perhaps good enough to facilitate an upgrade to WinMo 7 later (at least I dearly hope so). The only thing that could make this phone better is a QWERTY version and a release date not too far off.
Super specs...
The Leo May NOT Have a Capacitive Screen After All - http://pocketnow.com/rumor/the-leo-may-not-have-a-capacitive-screen-after-all
Resistive or capacitive, not a big deal to me personally. Capacitive is a little better, but resistive is more flexible (gloves & stylus).
That aside, 100% this is the first phone since my Touch Pro to really get me excited, and the first ever non-keyboard WM phone I'll buy. Nice to see an actual device just to prove the doubters wrong (seriously, how the ignored the evidence I don't know). Now we just need to get people to stop referring to it as "Touch Pro 3". It's NOT! Also, for those who haven't noticed, THIS IS NOT A RELEASE DEVICE! You really think HTC will release it as-is with the filler "lorem ipsum" text on the back? Sheesh...
Pretty obvious this device's main job is as a tesbed for WM7, the specs of this and WM7 are almost 100% aligned. HTC might not release the upgrade come the time, but the good folk here cetainly will.

Well, to be honest, I didn't even know the Leo was supposed to have a capacitive screen to begin with. Besides, I really do prefer a resistive screen. The screen is good enough as it is; perhaps it could be a bit better if it were AMOLED, but otherwise, meh.

Yes, I don't mind any device so long as it has at least a 3.5in screen. As someone who has been a former user of the HTC Hermes and a current user of the HTC Raphael, I tend to get sick using devices with small screens, and low res.
However, I don't doubt you for thinking of the Omnia II or B7610. I myself was actually planning on buying the B7610.

So a fraction of a millimeter more in size is considered crossing the line now? Maybe if you balls weren't in a vice grip from wearing those skinny jeans, you may find that they will fit in a pants/shirt pocket just fine.

Hey Lude,
Why don't you put on some lube and calm your cojones? He had an opinion, and that was it.
This phone is simply just way too big, I'd have to agree. The specs are beastly on this thing, and I personally think even 3.8" on the Touch HD was the ideally perfect size. I have no idea why they'd even want a 4.3".
And personally, unless if this thing is packing a 1850 mAH battery on it, I wouldn't even bother with the phone. 4.3" and a 1Ghz processor + 3G or 4G or what have you. You do the math on how fast before this thing dies in your hand midway through the day. This is assuming that they're using the same old type of LCD-displays that are present in the TouchHD and not some new revolutionary giga-low-powered-screen.
It looks very good on paper, but I'm fairly confident that this phone is going to only attend to a market that is only a fraction of what the TouchHD is focused on now.
Cheers.
It looks nice. And is it the HTC Touch Pro 3? HTC Leo runs on a 1GHz Snapdragon processor?

...POS keyboard!!!!!
Am I stupid?
I thought the n1 had a bigger screen than the iphone and it has boggled my mind that its so so so so much easier to type on the iphone 3g and 3gs because that keyboard just looks and feels so much more spacious.
I just measured it and the damned iphone in fact does have a wider screen. I guess im an idiot but i thought the iphone was 3.5" and the n1 3.7", which i assumed to be diagonal meaning the n1 would be taller AND wider. The n1 has a taller screen by a negligible amount but a wider screen, which the inexplicably unbeatable iphone has, is far more useful. This phone was designed so long after the iphone why in the hell is such a basic feature not equaled much less improved? this is really embarrassing and no im not going to use some 3rd party keyboard, ive tried them but the problem is more the screen size and less the google software, which is definitely bested by the iphone in this department but size could have easily remedied it. just pitiful, for the first time since my g1 so long ago, im actually having to convince myself NOT to get the next iphone...
If you simply just look at screenshots of the devices side-by-side you can obviously tell the N1 is taller, while the iphone is WIDER - therefore the typing experience on the iphone is made better by that simple factor, not too much better, but I'm sure it helps.. (I just said that because I figured you would've looked at them being compared before purchasing the device) The typing experience on the iphone is also made better by the work that was put into the the on-screen keyboard, and the only Android one that can counter it in my opinion is the HTC_IME, or Swype. I'm also not a fan of the stock keyboard. (Maybe smart keyboard too.. or shapewriter.. hmm..)
If 3rd party keyboards are not working out for you, you'll simply have have to use the phone in landscape mode to maybe better your typing experience.
We just need HTC_IME for WVGA devices I find using the pixilated version of HTC_IME is better than the stock keyboard on the Nexus One.

Yes, but I believe the current one for the Nexus One goes off-screen, unless it has been corrected.
Swype in landscape mode isn't ideal anyways, I only use it portrait, where it shines the best.

Fair enough. There's a new voice to text app for the iPhone but I'm willing to bet Google's is more accurate.

Plus coming from g1 and mytouch 3g I couldn't help myself wanting to see what android could do with adequate power, and boy is it impressive (other than the keyboard of course) And on second thought it must just be extremely superior software because that just doesn't seem like enough of a difference otherwise.
Google has the power to crank out a super keyboard in a day or two...whyyyyyyy Google why!?

Fair enough. There's a new voice to text app for the iPhone but I'm willing to bet Google's is more accurate.

Ah, well to me it looked rather noticeable. Even as such, we all view things in a different light I guess.
What is the width / height of the screen on N1 vs iPhone 3GS btw (in millimeters)?

Not what oyu asked for but Viewing screen is 3.7in for N1 vs iphone which is 3.5
actually if you put the two phone over each other and not side by side and compare of the width of the screens (NET WIDTH, not including bezel) i think both screens have the same width. the fact that the N1 is taller makes it look narrower.
Try it out with both screens turned on and you will see.

Actually I pulled out the old tape measure and the iPhone screen is definitely wider. Surprising I know, and it was just me and my buddy with the iPhone so I came here to complain because I didn't want him to think his phone had anything on my phone, not even for 1 second. Pretty petty of me but I can't help it , I love android!
I really don't know why people find it so difficult to type on the stock android keyboard. I've been using it for a while now - admittedly it took a few days to get used to typing on it, coming from an iPhone and Hero background, but still, I find typing on it a breeze! Even more so with Smart Keyboard Pro!
another vote for swype. i will never two-hand type again. i wish i could swype on my laptop
I think that HTC put the speech to text in the because they new the keyboard wasn't all that great!

Google put in the speech to text with the Android keyboard - not HTC. HTC's IME (keyboard) does not have a button for speech to text AFAIK.

MyTouch Slide Specs are here!!!!

Display: It is hard to tell from the leaked pictures, but the Slide will feature a larger display than the original MT3G. Our source compared the display with an iPhone 3G S (3.5 in) and said they were the same size. I was unable to determine if the display was AMOLED or not.
Camera: The Slide features a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus. This is an improvement over the MT3G which had 3 MP and no flash.
Processor: We don’t know the exact model number, but I did confirm it has a 600 MHz ARM11 processor. This could be the Qualcomm MSM7227 or MSM7627.
Memory: From what we can tell the Slide features the same 512 MB ROM / 512 MB RAM as seen in the HTC Nexus One. The phone should ship with an 8 GB microSD card.
HSPA+: The source claimed the Slide will be used by T-Mobile to promote their HSPA+ network, but I do not think it supports the full HSPA+ speeds. Instead I believe it supports HSPA 7.2 which is compatible with the new HSPA+ network. Qualcomm just started to sample some of their HSPA+ chipsets (MSM8260, MSM8660 and MSM8270), but those have a 1.2 GHz Scorpion processor which is faster than what is used in the Slide.
Battery: 1300 mAh as reported earlier.
Operating system: This was already known, but the Slide has the latest Android 2.1 firmware (still kernel 2.6.29) and HTC’s new Sense UI. All of the latest Sense UI features like Leap are included, but the UI has been tweaked to T-Mobile’s liking. It is the same UI as the leaked Espresso ROM that was revealed earlier this year. Users can select between 5-7 home screens.
Hardware extras: The Slide features a proximity and light sensor. The external speaker is much louder than the original MT3G. An optical trackpad is used in place of the trackball.
Multitouch: The Browser, Gallery, and Maps applications all support pinch zoom.
Live Wallpapers: Sorry, these are not supported. This is not that big a surprise considering the processor is ARM11 based.
Accounts & sync: Since the device is Android 2.1, it supports multi accounts. There were a few new additions not seen on my Nexus One. Flickr is now an integrated account you can sync. There is also the option to sync your T-Mobile account so they can store your photos.
Software extras: Lots of T-Mobile bundled apps like AppPack, My Account, and more. There is a myTouch Music app which is a semi-clone of Pandora. Quick Office is included along with some games like Abduction. None of the bundled apps can be removed at this time. Swype is the default virtual keyboard, but users can switch to the HTC keyboard or a new one called Dragon Dictionary.
Gaming: Our unofficial gaming benchmark for mid-range Android phones has become Raging Thunder 2. The game was designed for high-end phones like the Droid and N1, but the source claims it plays at an acceptable frame rate on the Slide. This is a surprise because we tried the game in our Motorola Devour review (also 600 MHz ARM11) and it was not playable. The additional RAM found in the Slide could be the reason for the performance boost.
Overall impressions: Our source claims they were extremely satisfied with the Slide (and they came from the G1). The phone is slimmer than the G1 which is nice for those considering an upgrade. The performance of the Sense UI was great and no lag was experienced on the home screen. The battery life is typical of any Android phone and got them through the day.
I like it! Except... I'm so used to touch screen. I don't want the keyboard lol. I'm sure those who love their g1 might like this though

Used to the touchscreen? I hate it man. It works great when I am not using it but when I need to use it, it decides to break and lag like hell. I'm waiting for a cool keyboard android phone.
i have seen the leaked photos and with the specs..sounds like a decent phone...still not a nexus but i would use it....if i hadnt
gotten the MT3G.

I wish I could even get that feeling... too bad Carriers here have such old old phones. If only I was rich enough to buy them upfront and have it shipped from the states!
not sure if i really need a physical keyboard anymore now that i'm so use to swype. Well i guess it'd be useful for like NES emulators.
im sellin my mytouch for this im gonna buy this unlocked so im wondering what the price is unlocked
Like I posted before in the HTC Dream section. I like this phone a lot. Playing around with it felt real snappy and the keyboard felt quite amazing.
Its the perfect replacement for now from the G1 even though the processor isn't the most impressive piece of hardware by any means. Should suffice for now.
I'll be buying the white one as its super sweet.
This was taken from someone who posted on another site but seems legit:
I work for T-Mobile and am supposed to be getting one of these soon as part of a MyTouch Champion promotion. I was also a a meeting this evening a rep had already received his, and from everything I see, it flat out flies! I know the processor isnt much of an increase, but HTC has done something right because the multitouch seemed really responsive and the new Sense looks clean. I was also told at the meeting that the processor is actually 700 MHz, not 600, so take it for what it’s worth, but I’ll be more than happy to post again once I receive mine.
I've already sold my MT3G to cover some bills and I'm gonna replace it with this next month. May 17th needs to hurry up and I hope the date sticks!

I disagree. It's out of date from day 1 for power users. I couldn't commit myself to an 18 month contract for this. Really need a high end phone with QWERTY.

Being a power user myself, I disagree with your first statement. Even my Mytouch 1.2 with it's 528 MHZ processor runs applications well. I mean, a 1 GHZ Snapdragon would be nice, but just because it doesn't have the highest end specs doesn't mean it's already outdated. Besides, if you can't live with that for 18 months, switch to Even More Plus and buy it off contract, or just don't buy it at all.
I might buy the Mytouch Slide, if it can become rooted and not be a PITA like the Mytouch 1.2.
I have the MyTouch Slide...can't wait for someone to root it because lack of apps2sd is my only complaint.

speed also lays in the os/partitioning.
bloatware or a bad os will slow down even the scorpion 1.2ghz..also idk about the cell cpu but speed also comes from the fbs & clock on the ram. htc may have done some nice programig to speed it up.

HTC Shift

I was looking on the site and out of the 4g and droid phones this says it comes with 2.2. I guess a good way to get people on board with that phone.
Yep. HTC has 2.2 on both of their EVO phones. And Sprint keeps putting all of their advertising money behind them. And we can't seem to get an update. This isn't really new.
nah, most people don't know what 2.2 or 2.1 is etc. They just want a phone. I had the shift and took it back for my epic.

I'm interested to know what you didn't like about the Shift.
Personally, the ONLY reason I picked the Epic over the EVO was the slide out keyboard. I had only held a touch screen device once before, and couldn't get the hang of the android keyboard, so I wanted the option of a physical keyboard- if nothing else just to try them both out and see which one I took to better.
I find that I use either one depending on situations. So if I have the choice in the future on different devices I think I'll always grab the one with the physical keyboard. But this whole 2.2 issue is really giving Samsung a bad taste with me.

The shift was a good phone, it felt more solid than the Epic. I like the keyboard better except for no number row on the keyboard. I wanted a bigger screen and a keyboard. Not to mention the screen of the epic was a lot better.
Plus the shift feels like it has more lag before doing what you tell it to do. It reminded me of the lag that the stock hero has, but not as bad.

I dunno. It was definitely heavier than even the Moment was and that was a brick. The slide-out keyboard felt like it could get stuck in any position and broken off if you put it in a bag or pocket wrong. It's not spring loaded like the Epic and Moment, it uses friction.
I like the feel of the Epic the best so far.
The shift is a great phone if you're coming from a moment or intercept. doesn't feel like an upgrade from the Epic or the EVO for that matter. My wife has the EVO shift and she loves it and its a good phone but it just comes off as a phone not on the level of the other elite sprint phones

I've spent a bit of time with it and the Shift seems like an excellent little phone. The Epic is better hardware-wise but for the price point the shift is pretty hard to beat right now. HTC is just better with software updates than Samsung..but Samsung's hardware is better.

yes, very heavy phone. I liked how the keyboard slid out better than my Epic, felt more solid and probably will last longer than the spring. the Shift is pretty fast too. Faster than the EVO . I was getting 1300-1500 Quadrant out of the box. I really don't like Sense either. But I usually use ADW or LP so that doesn't really matter

The screen is the deal breaker for me on the Shift. Going from the Evo to the Epic I was a little annoyed by the smaller screen and looking at the Shifts screen I just said forget it. I use Qik as well and of course the lack of the front facing camera makes that difficult. Again I want to make sure that it's clear that I think the Shift is a very good phone. It's just not on the level of the Evo or Epic
This was made as a "cheaper" version of the Evo with 700 MHZ instead of 1k etc., so yeah, this phone is ok, but the Epic blew it away specs-wise. I looked at both, didn't see a point in getting 2.2 if it came on a crappier phone in my opinion....I thought this phone blew away the shift.

The 700 mhz on the Shift is faster than the EVO due to it being 2nd generation procerssor.
You do know the procesor is a scorpion based snapdragon and clock speed is not the end all. The Shift is a ver nice phone. I own it as well as the Epic. No, there is no lag. It's pretty peppy. The keyboard mech is similar to the Droid's. It's solid and probabl a bit more reliable than the Epic's. If you're used to treos and bb's you won't have an issue with the lack of a dedicated # row. It's the rest of the fn symbols that are an issue. Thre is just zero standard for placement. The synbol key on the spacebar is dumb. The fn key below the shift key is dumb. Do we need a redunant menu button? No.
Other than that, the keys and spacing are really nice and samsung could take note. The linear key spacing, smooth keys and redundant capcative buttons are thbe keyboard reall kill the keyboard on the epic. I type well on it, but I could've been so much better. It's like they tried to screw it up.
The screen is just ok, and if you want a 3.6" screen, it's fine. It's the same thickness and weight (relative) as the epic. The build feels more solid, but that's the difference between metal and plastic. At least for it being a chunk, they tapered the back nicely so it fits well in the hand. HTC's software is definitely the most polished so for the android idiots it is a better out of the box experience. If you customize it doesn't matter. I do like the toggles in the drop down menu a ton. You need switchpro on a homescreen with the shift. You lose the nice 4g toggle widget if you don't use the stock launcher and have to turn to the market. Switchpro has no 4g toggle yet for it even though it has one for the evo. Lame. Still no push on HTC's stock mail so you're still looking to maildroid or k9. Don't get the dissing of imap idle for stock mail.
Battery life was fine. Not "noticably" better than the Epic. Think it's the evo battery so it should be better with the smaller screen and lower clock speed on the processor.
All in all, if the evo and epic are too big, it's a great phone. Not everyone wants to carry a phone the size of the evo and epic. Outside of the front camera and hdmi out, it can hang with the big boys no problem. I you think differently you're probably biased and only played with it for minutes.

The shift is the sprint desire z
The 800 mhz UNDERCLOCKED processor is the second gen snapdragon and is actually better stock than the EVOs 1ghz. Its also able to be overclocked to a stable 1.8 ghz...the hummingbird is better hz for hz but the shift is no slouch...

Checked out a shift the other day, and (this is purely personal taste, like whether you like escargot or not), I really didn't like the keyboard compared to the Epic.
The Epic has a spring-loaded, easily sliding kbd. I can pop it open and closed with my thumb.
The swift has, instead, a friction mechanism that feels like an oil-damped hinge, and requires both hands to open fully. No spring action. I really hated it.
The design used by Sammy has it's issues (gets loose, wobbles a little), but that is in part a result of the low-friction slider design.
I'd rather put up with those inevitable functional tradeoffs and have the pop-open/closed slider than the more solid-feeling mechanism of the swift that requires much more effort (and inconvenience) to open.
