4G code in HTC EVO - Hero CDMA General

I just read that Android doesn't naively support Wimax in 2.1 and Sprint put some of their code in to make it work on the EVO. This seems similar to the way HTC used code in 1.5 to make the Hero work before 1.6 came out. Is there any chance we would be able to take that code and have Wimax on the Hero? Please read disclaimer below in case you are about to flame me.
Disclaimer: I realize this may be a really stupid question. I'm unfamiliar with Wimax and what hardware it requires so if the Hero just doesn't have the hardware capabilities then obviously this is a mute point.

Short answer: No
The radio is physically different. Just like GSM/CDMA are physically different.

wait lol wimax and 4g are the same thing lol

When I bought my Hero last October I knew next to nothing about 3g/4g etc... except the fact that 4g was faster and supposedly coming very soon to SLC. The salesman at the sprint store told me that the Hero is 4g capable and would just get an update when 4g was officially available. He also told me that there was already spotty 4g coverage in the SLC area. I know now he didn't know wtf he was talking about and just told me that to sell the phone.

No they're not. "4G" is a standard term for certain speeds in mobile data networks.
(Technically WiMax is only a theoretical 4G network... in actual practice it's a lot slower than the 4G standard.)

at least he realized it was a dumb question while he was writing it... lol

No it's not..
4G is a standard term for the "4th Generation" of Mobile Data Networks..Not the actual speeds..
The speeds are then classified by the competitor, based on their network capabilities...
The speed of the network is defined by WiMax standards... Not by 4G standards..

True, 4G referes to 4th Generation. However, there are standards bodies (just like IEEE) that set out what minimum speeds are required to be considered 4th gen wired and wireless technologies (1Gbit for wired, 100Mbit for wireless.)

Eh really this does bring up something that will be interesting for me as a dev. I don't think that wimax/4g support is gonna be all in the kernel. For good reason. The modifications HTC made to get cdma to work in android 1.5 were not at all closed source kernel modifications. That is proven by the fact Maejep backported the gsm kernel to cdma and data worked the second he got it booting. The actual modifications HTC made were actually in the system build its self. Through apks that were closed source. Now I get and have gotten a few leak builds that have had wimax support in them. They were all gsm devices granted. But they still had a directory called wimax in the system. Now with that in mind my eclair dev build always had that directory in it and had the proper setup un the ramdisk to initiate wimax and it attempted to do so on every boot. Anyhow it was a given that the hero hardware didn't support wimax I know. But in regards to the Evo it leaves me wondering will we be able to use wimax in aosp builds. Will it be possible to move the wimax diff into aosp builds.
But yeah it just got me thinking

And what would those bodies be? Because in my 10 year wireless experience, this would be the first mention I have heard of them...........
The wireless standards are set by what the network capability is.. No ifs or buts.
The 1G,2G,3G,4G references are only for the customer so they know what "level" they are on...
The only standards are set by what the technology can withstand, and are not "set" until after usage and bandwidth tests are run by the network...And they approve of those data ranges...
So again, the "standard" is set by how much data WiMax can move...
WiMax is not theoretical... Clearwire has been using it for the better part of 4 years now.. And the speeds are going to be the same as they always have. They used WiMax for the disaster relief people during Hurricane Katrina.. It is a ten year old technology..

I'm sure there's a different radio in there, but... isn't WiMAX a newer version of 802.11x. Eg. 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, etc.?
There hasn't been any mention of it, but could it possibly be backwards compatible with 802.11n?

Kind of...
It is a brand new protocol 802.16, and it does support some limited normal WiFi(802.11), but there is a brand new architecture for connecting IP-based networks, so some sort of scripting would need to be ran to convert back to the 802.11 architecture..
So.....
in short, probably not...

The Evo 4G is a CDMA phone it will not work on GSM and never will since it doesnt even come with a slot to insert a sim card.
yea i know that but the ones that u've seen on every website and videos r not the OFFICIAL EVO i think cuz they didnt even announced the official date but if its CDMA im out of luck and wish for a GSM version of the EVO.

It's 100% CDMA w/no SIM slot. So I guess your out of luck
The big thing about the EVO 4G is the fact that it's a CDMA/Wi-Max. If it had a SIM slot, and you put it on a GSM network like T-Mobile, you wouldn't be able to connect to Sprint's 4G network and lose the one big advantage of this phone. Sure it's got 720p HDMI output and 8MP camera, but other than that and Wi-Max, it's got very similar specs to the HD2.
The other reason could be the fact that they wanted it to run Android, and I have yet to see any CDMA/GSM World Phones running Android natively so they may not have worked out the whole dual mode switching in Android - but I could be wrong about that one.
well.......i guess i have to be patient for something better by HTC on GSM carrier network with ANDROID 2.1.honestly i bought the HD2 and i've flashed custom ROM but still not satisfied at all with WM.i would get me NEXUS ONE but then again better phone will come out by HTC every 3-4 months.as far as 4G its not necessary for me at all.i will patiently wait till end of summer for the better.thanks guys

As they saying goes.."one bird in hand.. is better than two in the bush"

So when is this mythical HSPDA+ coming out? WiMax has already been out for over a year where I live, and I've not heard of a single person with WiMax-like speeds on any other carrier. T-Mobile is typically last to the game in that regard, but either way, you guys already have the HD2, which I'd rather have anyways.

why would it have to be "certified 4G?" also, from what I've read from the beginning, is that WiMax and LTE are SO SIMILAR, that it wouldn't cost much for Clear/Sprint to fully convert. The even planned on having a combination of the two services.

wimax and lte use different freqs, converting would not only change the protocol(like software) but the antennas, transponders, receivers and transmitters (hardware)
then all the phones themselves would need new radios (hardware + software) It would be a huge mess, I highly doubt they will convert the technology, hope they just adopt LTE with Wimax and your phone supports both someday. As they already have chipsets that support both technologies at the same time with multiple radios and transceivers. But my money is the conversion of technology will not happen, it will just be integrated into the phones instead of the towers.
Now the wimax/4g thing, wimax has been branded 4g, 4g is a general term...(yes I know it's a stardard and has minimum req's) but the term works for it's purpose; recognition more than a actual "standard". evdo started getting called 3g when the 3g term got popular and was a "feature" and was easier to remember no actual feature was added for them to call it 3g.
The point is the idea gets across, as it is agreed they both generally mean the same thing, you know what it means, they know what it means, and making that kinda correction makes people sound like asses. Much like spelling correctors.
BAM! I knew I read that before.

not everything on you read on the internet is true, but facts are facts.. look
Wimax operates on 2.5Ghz
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX#Spectrum_allocation
LTE operates on 700Mhz
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3GPP_Long_Term_Evolution#Frequency_bands_and_channel_bandwidths
the two operate on two extremely different frequencies, you can't magically change a phone that is built to operate on one freq to start using one that differently. It's just not physically capable of doing it. No amount of software is going to change that.
That article was written in september 09' sprint has moved forward with wimax, they have made their decision, once they put equipment out in customers hands, they will have to cut some customers off by making drastic changes at this point in the game. To jump back at this point would be insanity. The infrastructure is already being built, and in some cases already built.

Why is that? Radios can transmit on all sorts of frequencies... you have no idea how they designed their antennae or transmitters. If Clear says, themselves, that the technology is 80% identical, then it's fairly believable. I've been hearing that for years, anyhow.
Hell, just look at AT&T, they have 3G on all sorts of bands, and that didn't stop them people from using them. This argument is pointless. Clear could have hybrid modems in store, or possibly their devices can already use the spectrum to reference. All I'm saying is Sprint/Clear aren't really committing false-advertising. Comparing some mythical unicorn that T-Mobile *might* have in a few markets sometime soon, to WiMax, which has been out for quite some time, doesn't make much sense.
For now, it's 4G... the fastest, and I believe they have the right to call it that. It's Sprint's fourth-generation network. For years, the carriers bounced back and forth as to who had the fastest network, and you didn't see anyone renaming their from 3G.

I have no idea how they designed their transmitter? This is more or less true, I don't know the exact specifics of their radios, but I have a really really good idea. I used to fix radios for the army... I have an good general knowledge of radio technology.
I don't have the exact links but I've posted some to chipset makers in this forum. One is for the evo's chipset, and one for for a future phone's chipset. The future one has radios *note plural* built in that are capable of broadcasting on both the 700 and 2.5 frequencies. The EVO's is not capable of the 700mhz only the 2.5ghz (among others 800 & 1900 but not 700)
The reason you can tune civilian band and police radios to multiple frequencies is because of transistors. But you're talking a very small spectrum. A common span is like 1-50Mhz difference. The Bigger the gap the bigger and more elaborate the electronic circuitry is required. Having to tune amplifiers as well as antennas. I'm not going to give a lesson on radio broadcast technology cause, well I'm just not.
For antennas they have to be cut to exact length based off their wavelength to preform optimally. As the frequency increases the length gets shorter but the principal is still there. It has to be more or less exact, the more you deviate the less clear the signal will be with the higher freqs the more exact it needs to be. Fudging a difference that big will not work for a clear and precise digital signal.
SO... while a cell phone radio might change it's freqs slightly depending on open channels, the range is fairly close, a radio that operates on 700mhz might go as high or low as 725 for example but it will not, and I repeat will NOT do a 1800Mhz difference. Hopefully that sheds some light on this subject.
I can't go into how their backend protocol is worked, because I honestly haven't ever messed with it and would only be speculation on my part. So it might be correct, the software might be easily interchangeable, but the hardware is not, and clear/wimax even stated so in that article. They said they had equipment capable of both or options or something. But a change is needed for sure. The evo is sprint's flagship wimax phone, and it is not capable of the freqs lte currently uses.... end of story.

Unless you plan on using your EVO for the next 4-5 years , i dont think it really matters. If/when they make this move, there will be plenty of phones to come out that will support the new network. I doubt anyone will still have their EVO's /Epic's by the time this actually comes to reality.
Supposedly the wimax radio could be flashed to support LTE per shinzul and the wimax thread.
this might explain why:
a. the 'featured' echo doesn't have wimax
b. the $10 premium fee for non wimax phones
i think that sprint will discontinue the production of wimax phones and wait for the deployment of lte before they release any new 4g phones. if that turns out to be the case, i don't care if they release a evo with a quad core cpu and 8 gigs of ram. there's no way i'm going to stick around with only sprint's absolutely pathetic 3g.
i also doubt that the evo will be hackable to use lte. what about authentication? lte is supposed to use sims. no way the evo will be able to connect even if some clever hackers get the radio itself to be compatible.
Doesn't bother me too much. Yes, I enjoy the speeds of WiMax, but the battery drain is too much of an issue.

Not so sure about that. WiMax currently require some form of key/pw authentication with Clear to connect. LTE on Sprint will probably require SIM cards to connect, like Metro PCS does even as CDMA network. I don't see how they (or even Sprint themselves) will get around that issue. It'd probably be as futile as trying to connect with AT&T's/Verizon's LTE network with a hacked WiMax radio.
Ok sprint will have wimax and lte dual so that good thing imaging and evo 2 with rev b for 3g 1xadvance and wimax and lte omg and being coverd with that much technology

with speeds under 200 kbps there is absolutely no phone in the world that would make me wanna stay with sprint.
Boy,if this is true they will be losing customers like crazy come this summer.
The story was on Engadget the other week. Technically, the Sprint network guy said it was being evaluated for six months...but with no new Wimax phones on tap for the next six months (that we know of), the conclusion will be the same at the end of six months as it is now.
If they are going to make the move, then throw the switch, and have a plan in place to get us off of our EVO's (and them off of their Epics), even if it's three months out, because then that class action thread that's out there may start looking real good and actually get five stars.
Note: If all that's needed is to switch out the baseband cards and run a firmware update, that would mean that Wimax would have to get turned off, because it's the Wimax equipment that's getting the upgrade. So this won't be a side by side Wimax/LTE network. It's either or...right???
i hope not...
LTE will be bad for cost conscience customers.
LTE is carrier's wetdream... consumers nightmare.
Good riddance? Wimax is a joke in my area (metro Atlanta), to this day I can barely connect to Wimax from inside my house and the coverage map "according to Sprint" shows my area lit up with Wimax. I have to stand by my second story window in my house to connect to it and the connection is "poor", Hell its poor when I go outside.
Love the phone itself though.

How so? If it's what I think...network access can be controlled just as easily on a Wimax network as on a LTE network. It's all IP traffic. Verizon just chooses to control it.

That's what I think, too!
If they move to LTE, all us us evo owner's should get a free upgrade to an lte phone, as our phones will be useless for what we bought them for.
If the rest of the post is also correct, they are releasing a wimax version of the blackberry tablet later this year...which indicates they aren't phasing out wimax just yet. so, no...prolly not getting a free upgrade out of this.

Exactly...2-3 years until they're converted to lte, so wimax as normal.
Old news that I've probably mentioned 6 times since posting in this very section. Project Leapfrog was the codename for Sprint's Network Vision. I'm just patiently waiting for Sprint/Clearwire to officially announce LTE is a go, so I could retire this topic. Sprint's ****ty 3G network will be taken care of by this same project they've mentioned since December.

Isn't wimax to LTE as simple as a change in software? I could be wrong but I was under the impression that the wimax chips in our evos could in theory pick up the low frequency signal of LTE. Then again, I have no idea just reposting what I've heard said elsewhere.

On the tower side, the hardware used in the base-stations can apparently be updated very readily -- swapping some circuit boards, and doing a software update, to make them LTE ready.
As to our phones, there is some disagreement. The LTE spec allows carriers to use frequencies in the range of those that our phones can already receive. Whether the hardware/software combination exists to let our phones receive LTE data, is up to debate. Many say no, but based on the spec, a Wimax antenna operating in the either the 800Mhz, 1.6Ghz or 2Ghz range can receive the signals (see Uplink and Downlink bands here: http://www.radio-electronics.com/in...ong-term-evolution/lte-frequency-spectrum.php), but can the phone discriminate and use what it receives? Who knows...
Great move if you ask me. And I don't know about anyone else but the places I've lived and traveling the Midwest parts of the south and here in the west coast sprints 3g has been my favorite. I also have an att and T-Mobile phone for business.... now talk about ****ty coverage lol.

Sprint switcing from Wimax

Well as many of you read on Engadget about Sprint switching from WiMax to LTE. Well naturally being curious, while I was stopping by my parents house on the way home I asked my dad who worked in telecom for most of my life doing contract work for Sprint. He now has since moved out telecom to some other department, but he still keeps up with his telecom friends who do contracting work for Sprint. Anyways back to the point I asked if these rumors were true. He said Yes they are switching from WiMax, but not to what and that Samsung is providing the equipment. If i find out anymore information I will let you know.
i dont really know anything about the 4g radio in my evo, but would it still work on LTE?

Everything would still work on the phone but the 4G LTE.
There aren't phasing out WiMax yet from what it sounds like, but since the Evo 4G wasn't designed with LTE in mind then no the LTE won't work on the Evo.

but does this mean that they are going to stop expanding the 4g network, and focus only on getting LTE up in more places? this is kind of a kick in the balls for people who just bought 4g capable devices with sprint.
They'll probably continue to expand and run Wimax on 2.5 Ghz and run LTE in parallel on 850 Mhz.
The way I understand, you would be able to swap out cards in the towers to swap out from wimax to lte... At least on new towers. Is that true?

Yes, but you can't swap out the hardware in your phone from wimax to LTE.
So sprint gonna issue new lte Evos to us? Lol I mean if this happens then I guess we all have grounds for leaving sprint without etf for them not holding up to their end of the contract....wimax. not saying I'd leave but I enjoy 4g.....on my Evo!

No lol.. i am sure if you have 4g service you would still get it.
No offense but you have like 5 posts Including 2 in this thread, and you've been a member here just as long as I have pretty much...I'll believe it when I see it, and as ruge said, the evo will be the compare to as the nextel chirp phones back in the day and the razor, obsolete, trust me, no evo will have lte
the Evo 2A will have lte, I promise
Edit: I am changing this because I read this post wrong. You are right they are about to use Samsung products on the new towers but its not to change wimax, it is to make the towers more efficient and smaller. From what I was told they will use new technology which will allow them to add all services on one tower and be able to free up frequency to build out. It would not be imho to drop wimax because they will be the only ones to utilize it giving them an advantage in developing. Back on topic he is correct they are making upgrades and using new hardware within the towers but I think its imho to have voice/data simultaneous on a cdma network (a first) and they will do it with wimax 2 starting 2012...(that is just my opinion)

This is complete bs as I know 2 top engineers working for sprint and neither have heard such news.... now I usually don't feed into this he say/she say because it won't change a thing but please don't spread speculations amongst the forum without having concrete facts. Sprint also stated recently they were keeping there 800 spectrum and making upgrades to it for business who utilize the "ptt" phones and not using it for lte. All it takes is a little reading....

I believe I know the article you are referring to as it was in another thread on here and discussed the new PTT service they will use once IDEN is turned off and it will include more speeds and the likes for data.
The way I took the article was that the new PTT phones will take advantage of the new network upgrade they are performing i think its called Sprints Network vision. The multimode base-stations will be the key to it all.
In the end the change allows them to use all the networks more interchangably from what I understand.
I would not expect them to keep the 800MHz band for CDMA PTT. they stated that CDMA PTT phones will be out late this year and if thats the case and they were planning on having them run on the IDEN 800MHz band wouldn't IDEN need to be shut off first? I take it as the CDMA PTT phones will run on the regular network and use data form the 800MHz once they deploy LTE on that. they can't put WiMax on the 800MHz b/c WiMax isn't provisioned in that spectrum at this point.
As I stated in my edited reply it would not make sense to use technology the others are using because it would not make good marketing. Also wimax 2 will be out second quarter or half this year, can't recall, and around the exact same time frame for those new phones. Also the new hardware being supplied to sprint and their new plan is at the core of what wimax 2 is. Which is stated to give better download speed and efficiency thru multi data channels. The company supplying the hardware, Samsung, also The first company to test wimax 2 and said it got 130mbs download, but that's with no one else testing it. But you get the picture.... I hope

My main issue with sprint is signal penetration. Once I get in a building or etc my signal just goes to ****. My coworkers have t-mobile and Verizon and they get full bars sitting next to me laughing at my 1 bar. It has been this way for years.

anyone heard about this

i got a call from my buddy from sprint and he said in 20 days sprint is gonna buy and get verizons 4gLTE
anyone know if this is true or not.
i know that the nexus is getting a update hopefully this week that is suppose to boost 4g and wifi connection. so thats a bit of a hint
what you guys know about this
I have heard that they were going to be using LightSquared possibly. Not sure if that is VZWs LTE provider, but since Sprint uses VZWs 3G towers, I can't see why they won't strike a roaming contract with them again.

An LTE roll out for Sprint will happen.
It's been talked about that Sprint may embrace both LTE and Wimax standards.
However, it's not an instant process and a phone would have to have an LTE radio to use the LTE band.

so this isn't something we should be expecting in the 20 days i heard, or even soon for that matter
1 more thing, if sprint does get LTE, do they lose the wimax if they decide to no longer be with ClearWire?

In 20 days some sort of deal might go down, or they might start some sort of project, but there's no way they can instantly switch and certainly not in such a short timeframe.
IF Sprint drops Clearwire then yes, Wimax would not work with Sprint phones.
It's been suggested that Sprint may go to quadband phones though.
Who knows. I'm not even sure Sprint does, which is part of the problem.

I wouldn't doubt it.
Sounds like a good idea actually.
And it coincides with the idea that Sprint might just run both standards along side CDMA (which would eventually be phased out, eventually.)
Both LTE and Wimax have uses.
Why shouldn't both technologies be used for what they do best?

LTE is 4g alone or is it Both 4g and Wimax.

Neither are true "4g"
Both are just different technology standards (well not even standards lol).
Its just like wireless a, b, g or n.
Just different "standards" for wirelessly transfering data.

In 2009, the ITU-R organization specified the IMT-Advanced (International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced) requirements for 4G standards, setting peak speed requirements for 4G service at 100 Mbit/s for high mobility communication (such as from trains and cars) and 1 Gbit/s for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users).[1]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G
Basically, 1 Gbit/s when not moving, 100mbit/s when moving and VOIP.
Everything runs through data.
Texting, Voice as well.

It has nothing to do with LTE and all to do with the spectrum used by Verizon.
Wimax would be just as "awesome" if at the same frequency.
