i just send an email to HTC HQ for their clarification of the poor material surfaces on tattoo keypad.
I'm waiting for their replies regarding the warranty claim as local SiS distributor can't make any decision regarding the keypad issue. They charge MYR150.00 for the stupid keypad. I'm not going to pay for this low quality keypad.

I'm also having the same pro.

Wow, that's really poor quality, I was kind of expecting more from HTC.
This cartainly makes me think twice about buying this device.
I might as well ad that this is not the first time i read about this issue, the pics made this problem so much clearer though. It's also sad to see that this issue actually seem to be so common=/
Too bad that the shell is the only affordable spare part.
Even if the warranty covers this, the buttons has been "worn out" far too fast. So the new ones would be worn out just as fast if they don't do something about the quality. Which I highly doubt that they will, HTC seems to have forsaken this phone a long time ago.
Still, this will be an interesting thread to follow. And after all, the tattoo is still the only android phone that I'd be interested in owning.

Please attached picture of the peeling off metal coating on the keypad. We need HTC Taiwan to rectify the issue.

mine is doing the same thing. I hope I can get warranty for this. Its very frustrating. especially when the phone is only 4 months old.

mine worn out in less than a month... sux...

hmm I have my Tattoo since begin of january and have not such problems like you all (I cannot say that I dont use it a lot...).
Well im from germany, dont know if this matters...

you would think they would use real metal but its only a coating

Same problem, I've had it since December.

New Response From [ Ryan (SEA Support (Tech)) ]
Dear W,
Thank you for contacting HTC.
We hope you are well. We are very sorry to hear of the issue you are currently experiencing.
But I am sorry that since the cover of phone is not covered by the warranty, so we cannot replace it as in warranty.
Again, we are sorry for the unhappiness and thank you for your consideration.
Best regards.

New Response From [ Ryan (SEA Support (Tech)) ]
Dear William,
Thank you for contacting HTC.
I have checked with the high level and they cannot accept the repair as in warranty. So I am sorry that if you want to repair it, you still need to pay.

this will be my 2nd and last android phone from HTC. I rather get motorola.

Sucks that HTC doesn't care.=/ Too bad the new covers doesn't come with new keys like in the good old days.
Keys that wear out in less than a couple of months kind of ruins the point with changeable covers.
There wouldn't be much point in repairing the keyboard either, since the quality is this bad, it'd just look the same in a couple of months.
I have never had a phone with that bad quality on the button, HTC must have been aware of this from the start, I mean, they must test the product before releasing it...
I wonder is there is something you can "coat" the keys with to strengthen them? That way so that other users could prevent this.
A good idea is to tell everyone with this problem to contact HTC with pictures of the issue. If enough people complain perhaps they will do something..

htc desire would be next suffer same fate as us. Their button also using metal coating.

does anyone know if I can replace the keys by myself? and if I can, where can I buy them from??
thanks

Pissed as hell :-( :-( :-(

A horrible thing just happened today...my god damned friend dropped my universal down from 3 feet height...nothing really has happened, but the edges are bruised...a little paint chipped off at a couple places....small deformations in the contours :-(
he says....."duh....sorry"
i'm all freaked out here :-(
now.... the question
is the body/ outer shell of the universal replacable?
if yes, how much does it cost and where can I order it from?
arghhh :-(
thanks,
San
PS: if you don't have an answer, or nothing to say at all, atleast sympathize for me!!
Presumably, you mean "ex-friend" ;-)

dreamtheatre39, I am so sorry. I know you waited so long for your Qtek. I suggest you friend should start saving now for your birthday - perhaps a replacement?
I too am very careful with my EXEC. I want it to last forever or at least till its next Pocket PC phone upgrade. I would really hate it if my EXEC would get any scratch or defect due to handling, especially if it is not my fault. So I do understand your frustration.

Would have had to carry him out in a pine box, if it had been mine!
pine? cardboard at a push
send it back under the insurance for the device?
thanks everyone!
I guess only people who own a universal will know how valuable it is....I am over obsessed with my gadget, and have constantly been "over protective" since i've got it! I keep a "wipe" sandwiched in the clam shell al the time to prevent scratches on the keyboard and display.....I keep wiping off the dirt at 5 minute intervals thru the day!
and in the name of satan why o why is it meeee to suffer this wretched wrath :-(
Can anyone tell me if its possible to change the outer casing? Is it complicated and too difficult to do so?
Thank you all once again!
San
I think only contact with HTC or where you bought Universal to see what they can do , my PDA2K got replace by HTC.
Hi!!!
Sad to know...but I can tell u the goodthing that IT IS POSSIBLE to have a new body..Entire casing can be changed..so do not worry. As of now the stocks are not there as it is just launched officially in India...In case I get a dead one with a Good Body, will let u know...I am based in Pune....
I can relate dreamtheater.... I dont think I can trust any friend with my device without constant guidance. Even my husband has to be under my eye when he's tinkering with my dopod.
Is it still under warranty? Then maybe it can be replaced... or maybe you can always give subtle or not so subtle hints to your friend (if he is really a friend) to replace it...
Good luck
hey!
hee hee I wish i could give those *subtle* hints lol
It really is not so bad, frankly speaking....but, the freak that I am....makes me soooo damn fussy about things, and i keep looking at those tiny abrasions all the time....and cant get it off my phucking head :x
I'll just have to wait until I screw it up a little more, and by that time....I'd possibly get an outer casing so that I could slip it in some new clothes!
Until then.....
cheers and have a great new year guys (n angelika!)!
San
Hey DT,
That really sucks mate.
Your friend should really take responsibility for this, but i know its not the money. I know you would pay good money to have your universal back in good shape this instant...
I could have helped you if you had a Jasjar since i-mate is based in Dubai, but since you got yourself a qtek, there really isn't anything i can do. However, i do advise you talk to MMB about this as he might be able to arrange for a body from his supplier. No harm in trying!
Dont worry, it will be fine. Also, get yourself a good case like the ones from Piel Frama or a metal case from Brando
Cheers.
Gutted for you m8. Know exactly how you must feel. Been treating my new Wizard like a new born baby since christmas day and wont let anyone touch it. The wife asked to have a look at it and I just told her it was too much phone for her to handle
Im totally anal when I get a new phone and am constantly looking at it thinking it that a scratch. Im thinking of making the whole family shave their heads as head hairs dont half look like scratches from a distance.... Pubic hairs are far easier to spot though
Hope you sort yourself out m8.

I am appalled how easy it is to get the Jasjar scratched, the metal also gets dents so easily. I need to find out the cost of a new cover, I don’t like my baby with imperfections 

3 feet indeed :-( it fell right off the table...
lucky for me, I had the cover protecting it....the one that comes with the device....I guess that took most of the impact!
If my screen had cracked....holy hell :O I don't quite know what I would have done!! I couldn't force my friend to buy me a new one, cuz....I would have killed him immediately
anyways, I've decided that i'd live with the scratches :-( considering the fact that it would take me another month and *all* the complications all over & again for me to source it! Now i'm ten times more careful....a little late though :-(
Best,
San
Hi dt,
Doing good mate, thanks.
Just be happy that the incident occurred on the 31st of last year and not the 1st of this year. Otherwise, that would have been a nasty way of starting a new year!
Any response from MMB?
Chin up mate!

HTC are Utter Rubbish! edited - because I may have upset some users..

Sorry to say that I recently went from a wizard (which I've had for 18 months) to a hermes...disappointed doesn't even begin to describe my experience.
I had the 'brick' as I've come to call it, 3 days and already it's deceased.
Started getting the 'phantom taps' and now no TS at all.
Rebooted a dozen times and it just wont get past the screen alignment...in fact if you sit and watch it does it itself!
I even know what the issue is as it's been reported in the past but you'd think HTC would've sorted it by now.
HTC are palming off shonky goods as cutting edge.....really disapointed.
Did you flash a custom ROM onto it? Is it a hardware problem? In any case, it's covered by a warranty, you probably just got a defective unit. IMO, the upgrade from my wizard to hermes was a HUGE difference in performance and I'd never go back.
hardware related
Its hardware related....as the device gets warm (probably room temperature!) the screen expands and the TS membrane is pinched. All kinds of fun ensues!
There's no warranty on it..so it wont be going back.
Chalk another one up to experience.
if you have no warranty then you prob didn't pay much and you prob didn't get a new unit, and you prob didn't even get from a reputable place....so buyer beware...if the deal was to good to be true it prob was and did you ever think to ask yourself why the unit was for sale in the first place.
Assume a lot dontcha
It's brand new...from a friend who upgraded almost immediately to a HTC Touch.
You are correct though - didn't cost me a bean - shame my wizard's already gone....
oh..and while you're at it...get off yer high horse!
Assuming that I'm a dumb hick who'll buy anything that's cheap is a bit insulting..

If it's brand new from a friend, why not have him simply return the unit as defective??? Besides, just because you aren't the original buyer doesn't mean there is no warranty...
I have both a Wizard and a Hermes. Apart from the Wizard feeling like it is more rugged when it's in your hand, the Hermes is superior in every other way. And when you load WM6 onto the Hermes, it just blows the Wizard away completely.
If you know enough about this device to know that the innards are "expanding" and that something is being pinched by this, it sounds like you've taken it apart.
You're clearly not telling us the whole story in any case. If you ever want real advice for fixing your Hermes instead of just venting and not telling us what you've done to it to cause these problems, a lot of people here will be happy to help you.
BTW, I've found that doing a soft reset after charging it does a lot for any heat problems if this is truly the only problem you're having.
...several screen alignment "fixes" available on this website...
Lay off the guy
Look folks, the 'phantom tap' is a known and documented hardware issue with Hermes and has nothing to do with where/how/when/why the unit was acquired, nor for how much. Wise up (and shut up if you don't know what you're talking about).
To the OP: Don't give up so easily. In my experience HTC tracks the warranty by serial number. Call them and insist on an RMA. I was successful in getting one fixed free of charge. And guess what... I bought it on ebaY, and the warranty seal had been broken!
Btw, it's not the touch screen. Been there, replaced it, didn't fix it.
Thanks vp3G

Thanks for that man!
As it turns out the device was still under warranty and it's been returned...just waiting for it to come back!
Funnily enough when I had it the first time, the rom I put on it was your 'Black Satin'! Nice ROM, particularly the file explorer replacement!
Personally I didn't see much in the way of difference between the hermes and the wizard....but I did have it only for three days.
When I get it back I and test it out a bit more, I will gladly eat my words if it out performs the old wizard.
Anyway, I wasn't slating the hermes in itself..many of my friends have one p )..it was HTC themselves for still selling devices to consumers with a known fault.
Andy.

One dud BMW doesn't make BMW's bad cars. You got a dud, plain and simple. Return it for one that works.
HTC has impressed me, especially lately as they are trying to "redesign" the interface for windows mobile to make it actually usable.
BMWs are incredibly bad cars for the price they are sold for.

Small Claims Tribunal!? That's a little exaggerated, right? Doubt you're gonna get anything out of this. Ain't exactly illogical of them to be claiming any exterior physical defects to be due to wear & tear. After all, not everyone who bought the phone has gone back to them to complain. We're probably just the unlucky ones (my X1's more or less ok except for the wobbly slider and paint chips on the battery cover).
As for better service in other countries, well, think it all depends. After all, the service centre here is outsourced.

Went to the service centre (both Wisma and Junction 8) a couple of times with regards to the wobbliness and always got the same answer that it is normal. As for battery cover, got it replaced once cos of a 'hump' in the middle when I first got it, but even with the new cover, I'm still getting the paint peel. Am considering buying an extra battery cover.
what? they gave u a new one and it peels again???????

'Patchy' backlight - what happen?

I've noticed recently the backlight on my HD2 seems to have suffered some sort of malfunction or something. Might be a bit of a strong way of describing it perhaps.
Basically imagine if you have a blank white screen/image showing on the phone, there's a couple of bits on it that always stay in the same place where the brightness is not the same as the rest. I'm certain it's only been like this recently but no idea why.
You can only really notice it with very pale or bits of white on the screen but am wondering:
1 - if anyone else has this,
2 - how it's happened,
3 - anything I can do about it,
In particular if it's a fault with the phone (as I'm certain the phone has never been knocked and it definitely has never been dropped or pressed hard etc), is this something I could get done under warrantee.
If it is, can I get it fixed on warrantee even with no receipt since I bought it on Ebay? Every single HD2 is still in its warrantee period so I hope they could do.
Thanks!
I have the same, they advised me to contact support, but i kinda neglected it for the time being.
I have the same kind of spot in the middle of my screen, i only really see it when the screen is white, annoying tho :/
I dont like the idea of having to send the phone out and missing it for a few weeks :'(
I had the same problem on my device so I called HTC and they picked it up, repaired it and sent it back. Well they sorted out this particular problem (by replacing the LCD panel) but, alas, created few more. The buttons were not placed properly, the body was damaged and etc. So Angry and Disappointed Me called them up and they picked it up again. This time they replaced the whole unit (the actual body if I am not mistaken) and sent it back. Finally I was glad to have my phone back after two weeks.
Funny enough most of the HTC employees that I spoke to had very poor English. And I spoke with quiet a few of them. Luckily I am talented at mimicking broken English and didn't have much problem getting my message across. I'd imagine for most people it should be very difficult to explain their problem and arrange repairs.
Thanks for the replies.
Is it possible to do this without a sales receipt and still not have to pay? I don't think I should have to pay since it's not very old at all but I can't prove it's actually my phone I guess.
Did you just contact them via the XDA website or something?
I got the same issue. Most annoying when reading long emails or articles. I thought about sending it in for repair but I have voided my warranty already and don't want to be missing my hd2 for a couple weeks and get hit with a massive bill. I think it has something to do with the layers in the LCD not being completely flat. But I havent got that far in my explorations of this phone, maybe I will on my next trip.
You should contact HTC support by calling at the number for your country that you can find from the HTC website.
They can do everything with the phone's serial no. At least that's how it worked for my Kaiser I got on ebay too when I had a prob with it.

Hmmm, good point. I have a custom rom on it so mine probably would be void too right? If I change it back to the original rom it should be ok though presumably?
Thanks anyway - glad this is not me.
I am also seeing this on my HD2. It is very faint and only really noticeable on white screens. Once you know it is there though you can't help but keep looking for it
To be honest I can put up with it as most of the time you can't actually see it, for example I can't see it now due to the keyboard being up.
I'd be interested to know if anyone in the UK sends their phone off for repair as I might do the same. I can't be without my phone though, it would be like loosing my arm!

Ah yes, so you did. Sorry I was looking at the flag on your profile not your location
I have a small crack on the glass of my HD2 as well between the bottom of the phone and the power / end call key. It looks like a small hair stuck under the button Not sure if they would replace the glass for me as well if I sent it off?
I got my phone from O2 so I'm wondering if I'd have to go to O2 for repair or direct to HTC, maybe I could do both
Anyway, for now I think I'll refrain from sending it off unless it really starts annoying me. A bit of a pain though
I've emailed HTC as well to ask about this.....

Need UR Help & Reviews. Cracked Glass Screen Repair.... am i being ripped off?

Hello everyone
this is my maiden voyage into this forum having lurked for a while since i got my HD2...
Please stick with me,
I have uncovered some grossly outrageous prices from 2 of the leading hd2 repair teams on the internet in the U.K.......
read on .....
well,
The day i decide to step foot into primark, i drop my hd2 and it drops less than a meter from my hand and catches the corners and shatters the glass screen....
after a slightly delirious 20 minutes of laughing i tried to use my phone.
unbelievably it worked absolutely fine! albeit with cracked glass and fine shards of glass sticking into my fingers....
so i immediately set about trying to find out where i could get it fixed online.
The first stop was TurnOnYourMobile.co.uk who quoted me just over £200 to have the screen replaced. They offered a "We'll beat the Price of our competitors" thing, and so i looked elsewhere .
Hence, next stop, Undercutter.co.uk...
According to the very difficult to use website, it would cost me £85! bargain i thought...
so i went back to TOYM to see if they could do a price match?
the answer was no....
oddly, it seemed that Mark at TOYM used to do the repairs for Undercutter and believed that Simon at Undercutter was confusing the Touch HD with the HD2 and that his quote was incorrect.
Back to Undercutter and when i emailed directly to Simon i was quoted £115 plus £8.50! still less than TOYM but a little bit more than undercutters own website stated! not a good sign!
So i did my own survey of prices of the HTC HD2 screen Glass Screen Digitizer.....
to find that the screen alone ranges from £23.50:gultek.eu/htc-hd2-digitizer.html
to £44.95 mobilefun.co.uk/htc-hd2-replacement-lcd-p23948.htm
I emailed Simon at Undercutter about this!
The fact that the screens were available for Under £50 and yet he was charging nearly £70 on top of that to spend less than 20 minutes replacing the screen..... a Whopping rate of nearly £70 an hour for the repair....
Absolutely extortionate.....
after sending my findings to Simon he sent me an email back saying
"We are not going to justify our repair prices and service further, but if you would like to use our services, please let us know."
so my advice to anyone getting a screen repair is, unless you can afford the extortionate prices, see if you can get it repaired on your insurance, and if that takes too long, try and fix it yourself.....
After my findings, I am tempted to buy a screen and repair it myself.....
But i need your advice.... Is the anyone out there who can fix my phone for a lot cheaper and at a resonable rate???
and If i am to repair it myself, Any tips or instructions on hopw to do it???
Many MAny thanks to you
and thank you for reading.

i think its ok for ppl to ask that much money for it from what i have seen its verry difficult to do.
you have to think for yourself. if you do it yourself and you destroy your phone. what will it cost you? is that risk really worth saving a relative small amount of money?
in my opinion its not.
Hello
I had my screen replaced by HTC in the UK and they charged me £79 +VAT so I would say your being well ripped off mate.
Marshall1975, who did you get yours fixed by? and did they replace it with the glass screen as opposed to a platic alternative i've been hearing about? and was it just the glass that was replaced or the LCD digitizer too?
I have a feeling it's just my glass that needs replacing not the bit underneath it.
jamieeeee, I don't think it's reasonable for people to make that much money out of customers at all, just my view but to make such a big profit out of one customer is shocking.
The reason i've posted my findings is to highlight the nature of people preying on a niche market such as us. HD2 is still fairly uncommon and these companies are making a killing bacause we are a niche market... i think it's dispicable...
Marshall, I haven't got mine fixed yet;. i'm doing my research good and proper first before i go for it....
Thank you so much

that is just the plastic digitizer that reads your finger, not the glass.
also, the second link is for the lcd screen not necessarily the glass. (I think im correct in saying it is a three piecesetup, lcd - glass -digitize ((or lcd digitizer glass))
Thanks for the Info SamSamuel...
so can i assume then, that as it's just the glass that is broken that , that is all i need to replace?
My phone still works brilliantly and no touch problems at all other than tiny bits of glass...
does anyone know How crucial it is after a drop to replace the whole lot? as SamSamuel suggested, the 3 parts that make up the screen?
Simon from UnderCutter didn't appear to say that the screens i listed were incorrect? who knows. Does anyone here have more detailed information to what is on there on the market.
Surely these screens must be Official as they are HTC branded?
below another os Simons gems in repsonse to my findings of screens at a lower price.....
If you have the skills to replace the screen yourself then please have a go at buying and fitting. Some cheaper parts don’t work or last very long, so there are cheaper ones out there but don’t hold your breath for a great product.
Also Just wondered if anyone knew of the whereabouts of the video tutorial on how to replace the screen???
and £79 wow, i can't beat that, Where did you get it done Marshall?

the videos are here
but its verry hard to seperate those 2 things..
hmmmm taking the whole of the screen looks fairly simple in the video! but i'm sure there has to be more to it because of all the separate components that make up the screen....
still wiatin got hear from Marshall1975 to see where he got his done.....
Have you contacted your network to see how much they can do the repair for?

I believe he stated in his post it was directly with HTC in the UK.
Why not plump for HTC. Save the hassle of DIY and its cheaper than the other quotes you have?
When its all fixed, work out how much insurance would cost per year balanced against dropping it, smashing it and repeating the whole process again......
Aha
must've not seen that through my cracked screen!
I have contacted HTC to eagerly await their response which i will post here!
