Why this update took/is taking so long - Droid Eris Android Development

With all the features missing from Eclair and all the features added by sense I can see why this is taking so long. They had to intergrte many features of 1.6 into 2.1 for us and lay a new version of Sense over it. This seems like a very special build of 2.1. I don't even know if I would officially call it true 2.1 because many of the features are missing/changed from vanilla 2.1 on the N1. This is a hybrid of 1.6, maybe 2.0.1, and 2.1. They(HTC) really did go out of their way to provide us with this build of mish-mash. I am in no way complaining Just wanted to get some feed back as to what others are thinking that have used other releases of Android. I do enjoy what is out now and hope that with the official release canidate some things are improved. I am excited to be working on getting some things together that we are missing from "2.1" that we all want (voice-to-text, live wallpapers, 3D gallery, etc.). Although it does suck that it took HTC soooo long to get this ready and hit the 2.0/2.1 speed bump that was a huge culprit I am glad they took the time. So to that we salute you Mr. takingwaytolongtoreleaseanupdatebutfinallycameoutwithareallystripeddownversionjusttomakeushappycompany!

Well, I've not used other Android versions, but I concur completely that this couldn't have been a simple project for HTC. In fact, that's exactly what I've been saying to all the whiners over on the Verizon Android forum. So I've been on Verizon and HTC's side all this time, but man...could they drag this out any longer????????? Now, you guys had to go and give me a taste for blood by hooking us up with 2.1. Now ya done it!
But you know, I've been in the customer service industry for a really long time (shop foreman at a new car dealership), and I understand very well that some things take longer than you thought they would. But it's amazing how much you can pacify a customer just by making them at least feel like they're "in the loop". Verizon however has stood mum all this time, letting everybody's frustration come to a boil. Throw us a bone for cryin' out loud!
I'm not sure I agree with you though about them skimping out on this build version. Asking the poor little Eris to work like a Nexus 1 with it's relatively adolesent processor and half the internal memory might be setting your expectations a little high. But that's just my opinion, and it's worth exactly what you paid for it.

Will there be a custom rom scene?

I'm thinking of coming over from an iPhone 3gs and although I love this phone, I think a robust custom ROM scene is a must for me. I tried the Captivate, but the broken GPS and bad AT&T service was enough for me to return it and wait and see how the Epic 4g works out.
I know the Evo has a lot more attention, but I'm not really willing to give it a go with all of its nasty hardware flaws.
Thoughts? Maybe I should just wait for a different phone (but I love this one >_>)?

The Evo has a been scene because Developers got a free one in the last Google I/O. The Epic 4G will take sometime until a fully development community is in place. By that time there will be better phones, since we are near Christmas.
This is a really good point. Hmm, I have some thinking to do I suppose.
That was a pretty ridiculous reply on which to base your opinion. Of course there will be custom ROMs. There's one about to be released any day now, and this phone's only been out for about 5 minutes. This is a killer device... the chefs will come out of the woodwork shortly. They always do.
P.S. See here.

No offense, but you kinda sound like your talking out of your @ss & need to do your homework... The epic community will grow rampant in due time...Not trying to sound like every other flaming jerk, but err, ahh...

I know this is near impossible, but I'm hoping for a ROM with HTC Sense element support. I want me some flipping clock action.
The Moment still has a rom scene and that thing is a disaster that Samsung flat out refused to fix (ie: They couldn't and just abandoned the unit).
I have a feeling the GPS issue is actually solvable on the Epic and I'm praying so is the nasty power usage killing peoples batteries when they want to do crazy stuff like use the phone for something other than making a phone call.
The only concerning thing is the stupid upload cap that makes absolutely no sense. I mean, Samsung HAD to learn a lesson from MomentGate right? They HAVE to actually support this... Rite?

Samsung finishes froyo testing?

A leaked email indicates that samsung has completed its testing of froyo.

Cool.
At this point, I will be happy if they get the damn firmware on our phones before 2011.
I also hope Samsung gets bitten in the ass for this.
They made a great phone, but are treating customers that paid hundreds of dollars and are still paying a lot of money for their phones like ****.

Oh come now. I understand there's been a ton of rumors, but the question mark in the title should have made it clear that it was not an official announcement.
Sure it might be a hoax, but it's hardly promising anything, and it makes sense given that froyo is unlikely to be imminent. If it's some troll then they're doing a pretty weak job of it.
At any rate, it's better than another "I know a guy..."
do all of the people *****ing think samsung is the only phone company that takes forever to release updates? it took motorola forever to release 2.1 for the original droid. 2.2 took a little while, but not as long.

I think the reason people aren't willing to give Samsung the benefits of the doubt is because of their behold II "incident".
Anyone can easily lose trust of others, and it is even more so for a big company like Samsung who failed to keep their promises (for behold II).
Wish people would get off how horrible Samsung is. This is bs. HTC has a much worse track record for updates and scandals way back to Hermes era's lack of hardware accelerated video when the hardware was there. Hell, how long was Hero on 1.5 skipping 1.6, 2.0 and finely getting 2.1. HTC and Motorola are also at the forefront of locking down handsets. How long has this phone been out? People need to take a break. I want Froyo as much as the next guy but come on. This is pathetic.

True this!
HTC and Motorola both have a buttload of phones they've said they would update to either 2.1 or 2.2 and have missed so many projected release dates that it isn't even funny. I have an unusually high number of friends who have MT3G's, Slides, and Cliq's for some reason. They've all got way more reason to be frustrated with T-Mobile, HTC, and Motorola than I do.
I'm as anxious as everyone else for 2.2, but lets be honest. Very little in 2.2 is going to make a profound difference in our lives. And these are just phones after all. It'll get here when it does...
Then we can all start *****ing about Gingerbread for the next half a year. WEE!
+1 on htc being far worse. In fact, after my tilt experience I promised myself I would never again buy an htc device, ever! And thank god I stuck to it. I laugh at the evo guys when they turn their cam on in bad lighting and see their mighty evo record videos at a beasty 10fps...

But without these people, we would never have the smartphone which we have in our hands today. Smartphone going mainstream is the best thing that ever happened to us.
Well the next part is for T-Mobile to start testing FroYo I guess. I doubt we're getting FroYo before mid-November at best I'd guess, considering the GPS update is still rolling out.
Fixing the lag issue (how about just using ext, Sammy?) should be much higher on their List Of **** To Do than 2.2.
After that, and continued GPS improvements, I'll look for Froyo.

I think Froyo is just around the corner, that is IF you dont wait for TMO to provide it. I have a feeling once this rom leaks, several devs will get busy cooking up their own flavors, not to mention CyanogenMOD 6.1 which should be soon. Im not installing an official TMO rom ever again....
3rd party is the only way to go.

Im done with android ...!!!!

Ok so im not posting this to be flammed or anything but more just to vent and for some opinions. But im really starting to get irritated with android and it's inability to come out with update in a timely manner, and i understand that alot has to do with the carrier to having to test it . But when you have all these android phones being made by 10 different manufacturers with really no limitations so they can all make there own flavor of android with different ui skins and, screen res, processors, file systems... etc. It is ridiculous cause there can't just be one kind of froyo nope , now there is froyo with sense , and touchwiz froyo, and for all the other different kinds of custom manufacturers skins that are thrown in. Which in my opinion makes it really difficult to be able to keep up with updates in a timely manner, and then on top of that samsung releases the fascinate that is supposed to get upgraded to froyo but instead of trying to get that pushed out they get the galaxy tab out with froyo hmmmm why not the fascinate no one knows and now the nexus s gets pushed out with gingerbread but what was that once again no froyo out for the fascinate i hope i am making sense with all this. Anyways as soon as Vzw get a WP7 phone that i like or the iphone 4 im leaving android, mainly for a smoother os and one that isn't so open that updates never happen. I would like some opinions on if im just impatient or if my whole venting session does make some sense to anyone, and if anyone agrees and is thinking the same as i am.

Oh believe and that is why i do like android but maybe its just i get bored with a device to easily, this is my 4th android device this year lol. Android just isn't cutting it for me anymore.
I love Android and the Fascinate in general and I think this whole 2.2 froyo update thing has blown absurdly out of overrated proportion! Yes 2.2 will be cool but alot of people are thinking it's going to be the awesome of all awesomes but it isn't? Aside from flash and app2sd there isn't a whole lot to speak about (thats going to be directly noticeable anyhow IMO)? Now, the Samsung Slow to no update record is another thing but we will have to see how that aspect plays out!

Do you really think that new iPhone or Windows device you get will update to a new OS within a few months of its release? The only difference is that you start with lower expectations for Windows or the iPhone.
I Think your Just Fed up With waiting for an update that Probably wont be out for a bit longer. 87jason I came from an iphobe 4 to verizon because of the superior service. I ended up getting the fascinate. I can say also there is nothing that android can do that Iphone doesn't do better. A jailbroken iphone ofcourse.
Themes, widgets, apps iphone wins hands down. There is no denying it. Oh and yes I said widgets.
One phone, once a year... no headaches or worries is something better out. The phone came out in June and still no phone is better hardware wise. Except the gpu is galaxy s is a bit better. But what's the point when there are ZERO APPS.

I think its more that the fascinate didn't sell well for verizon so them nor samsung are that worried about it. Sux but coming from a flagship like the droid was it had updates all the time but it use to be the big dog.

Nope. The "unlocked" part is one reason I went with the Fascinate. I just hope that Froyo gets here soon, so that the development scene can pick up more.

Ok, I'm just going to say it...

It took them this long to get FroYo out on ANY versions of Galaxy S hardware, we're all still on test builds... and they have Gingerbread running on the Nexus S... which is a freaking Galaxy S with a curved glass screen and NFC, a NEW piece of hardware.
So, Samsung is launch partner for Nexus S, first manufacturer with hands on Gingerbread, top in sales this year for Android, and spending millions to upgrade their phones...
Anyone wanna tell me why the f all Galaxy S phones aren't getting upgraded straight to gingerbread, before any of the other phones have a chance? Seems like they missed a boneheadedly obvious way to stage a coup on the hearts and minds of us loyal fans. Freaking Public Relations FAIL.
And I'll probably get flamed for this, and probably correctly, but just figured I'll be honest:
Last week I sold my epic and went back to Verizon, and got the Incredible. I miss the 4" screen, the ease of typing, the 4g, and the ability to easily wow people. And the Dinc's camera isn't as good.
But I don't regret it. I feel like my GS time was that of a first adopter. I paid for the wow. Since going back to DInc, I don't have as much wow time, but you know what? My GPS works as soon as I open GMaps. I don't need a hack to fix anything. My battery is only 1300mah, and doesnt last all day, but it never freaks out and drains while its asleep, or drains in two hours.
If this sounds like a rant, it's not. I loved the Epic, and the Vibrant I had first. The screen is amazing, and I waited since the HD2 for a phone bigger than 3.7 but smaller than 4.3. Samsung just needs to step up its validation, and it's support systems. The legion of Iphone fans aren't going to stick with any phone that doesn't just work.

as im more likely to agree....im kind of wondering if there is a phone that does make you feel warm and fuzzy, its probally cancer, herpes, or mono. you might just wanna stick with a good phone and leave the warm and fuzzies to the adult bookstores
Now I'll be honest. I think what you spewed is complete garbage. I'm running dk28 with no issues. I didn't have issues with eclair after the updated it to fix the "capped upload" issue. So I CHOSE to update it, I didn't have to...
I don't know how someone can possibly be so impatient that they'd run away crying like a 12 year old girl with a skinned knee for an update that hasn't even had a official release date given for it (that I've ever seen anyway). So, your impatience is not a sprint/samsung issue. It's a you issue. But I guess people like you would rather throw out a buggy update to shut whiners like you up. But then I'll guarantee that'd warrant another post from you crying about it. Maybe in the themes/apps section this time?
With that being said, since you obviously don't understand forum ediquette, I'm also left to assume you screwed something up when you flashed unsupported software to your phone by not follwing instructions, or whatever the case is. And AGAIN this is something that's you're fault, not sprint/samsung.
So yeah... The devs here made my phone a lot more of a pleasure to use. But it was a great device out of the box. The best I've owned so far by a long shot.
And if you want everything to work %100 why would you flash leaked software anyway?

Trevor, wrong section but since it's already here I must say it's definitely a justified rant. I've personally never really had an issue with those problems because I expect them to happen when I change it from stock, but I suppose I'm the minority. A friend and I had a conversation a week ago and believed because of the Nexus S that it would be in Samsungs best interest to just release the Vanilla version of each release to the carriers and let us pick and choose which bloatware we'd like, much like what we currently do with the ROMS. It would definitely feed the 3rd party developments as well as enhance what makes the Android platform wonderful.
With that said, try to post in the right section next time =)
So OP has a DInc now? He's going to be pissing and moaning when the Galaxy S series gets Gingerbread before his phone (thank you Nexus S). I hope the DInc forum goers are extremely tolerant..

Everyone jumped ship?

Just went looking through other forums on here and (gasp) just about everyone seems to have jumped ship to the tbolt. Well I've been assuming for the past week, that everyone was hard at work on new awesome ROMs built from Froyo Source.
Of course, I could have been lying to myself...I know all I see on my Twitter are posts about the Thunderbolt..
Who knows... only time will tell..
Well... JT did used to release SuperClean ROMs, then he took over the AOSP ROMs and Adrynalyne took over the SuperClean series for JT.
So there is really nothing wrong with him saying that.
Having said that, yes, development has slowed.
Agreed, JT used to do the Super Clean ROMs, but then moved on to AOSP. Adrynalyne does the Super Clean ROMs now. Are developers not allowed to develop for more than one phone?
Adrynalyne has even said that yes, he did get a Tbolt, and is developing for it, but is still developing for the Fascinate. No need to worry.
Not that I am a dev, but I am keeping my fascinate until I can get something dual core with ff camera and a gig of ram. Have heard lots os woes with the TB especially in battery life even with LTE off.
I do hope that the revs stick around long enough ti hook us up with some gingebread goodness, but my phone rocks as is!
Slowed a little.
Y'all need to actually read some of the devs threads, though most have gone to the Tbolt, most of them are keeping their Fascinates and continuing to work hard for us. Continue to Support your devs, they do this by choice, it's not a job, they do it to help us out of their own kindness. Wirh rhe Support we are getting from the carrier, i have nothing but love for our devs and donate whenever i can. I have nothing but contempt for Verizon ATM, and when my contract is up i may be jumping ship on them, bit never the devs.

I could not agree more. They take care of us in their spare time - we gotta take care of them too. And it is simply amazing to me how much they do - and on multiple platforms! I know how it can cost me an evening if my wife complains that something is not working, so I cannot imagine the amount of time they put in (for us).
I too am very pleased with my phone as it sits. I really like the quest for better, but even if it were to stay here, I'd be happy...
AND I agree. The T-Bolt is not enough for me to jump. Something dual-core with lots of memory and a screen as nice (or nicer, but I am a huge fan of the AMOLED) is what I am looking forward to.
No doom and gloom. Just progress.
i hope they didn't jump ship 100% on making updates for us because i just got into rooting, and trying all of themes made me not want to throw this phone across the room for being upset at verizon and no official updates to froyo.
but, thank you devs for all of your hard work! u've made me enjoy the phone at least a little bit again

It would take more than a thunderbolt for me to change phones.
I've never had a phone as durable as the fascinate, practically un-scratchable screen, great hardware and I can't believe it myself but I accidentally dropped my fascinate in about four inches of water at a parking lot, picked it up took the battery out let it dry for about 4 hrs. still works fine as if nothing happened.
Possibly SGS2 on verizon might change my mind.

By the time I get an upgrade, there will probably be quad-core 4GB memory phones.

lmao ya in 2015 if were lucky..
and why switch from the fascinate to thunderbolt.. its really not that impressive.. althought i did read there overclocking them to 2ghz.. seems kinda pointless to me.. but still pretty cool.. i dunno.. not worth jumping ship.. SGS2 all the way

Galaxy S 3 (or Galaxy T?) with 4.5" 1280x800 Super Duper AMOLED Plus A Bag Of Chips display, your quad-core 2Ghz proc and 4GB RAM, and 64GB SD card ;-) Oh, right... Froyo! (while everyone else enjoys Android 4.1 Jellybeans)
Another Fascinating post by my XDA app...
I don't even know why they release phones that can't get 8+ hours on a charge with at least 4 widgets syncing / email / some youtube / music / live wallpaper. If they did that kind of test battery life would be much better.
Guys development is still happening.
Look on the githubs and you'll see commits being made, there's still discussions and stuff going on in IRC, and we are still getting releases.
The problem is that a lot of the stuff going on now is "behind the scenes" work to get the code ready for CM6/7 and whatnot. The problem is compounded by the fact that because of decisions Samsung made the work is very slow and annoying. Stuff is still happening...it's just not highly visible.

I agree, hardware and software needs refining on android phones to optimize battery life.
I don't care what happens software wise anymore... As long as I can deal with it then get an iPhone.

My hope is that some move on to the Charge and work on cross-porting the firmware for that back to us.
i would be jumping ship too...waiting for something better than tbolt. I heard the battery life sucks and they locked down the root capability of it make it hard to root.
I know my next Phone won't be a Sammy. Unless there is nothing else out there. The only thing I like Sammy is they do have and make their own integrated accessories (i.e.: Car Dock) which I like and use a lot. HTC lacks that nice integrated accessories. Motorola is ok but hit and miss.
