new to android and the nexus - Nexus One General

hi.
im new to android and i've got the Nexus One...
here is what i allready did:
unlocked the bootloader.
applied SU.
updated to ere27 (not the radio)
now i just cant understand yet many things...
1. when i downloaded the update of ere27 (from modaco as i remember) why didnt it came with the radio update?
2. what does the radio update do?
3. ive seen another update for ere36b, whats new there?
4. what is RA recovery or something like that?
5. why i see different roms like cg 5 and so on? what do they add?
6. if i want a custom rom, will it wipe all the data?
7. what does the nandroid backup saves? and where is it saved? (so i will copy it just in case to my pc)
8. if i install different rom, from the desire for example, can i go back and somehow restore everything like all my apps and data and settings like wallpapers and homescreens?
9. will it be possible in the future to grab the sense ui to the standard rom and other things?
im sorry for those noob questions but can you please help me out guys?

You really shouldn't be playing around with rooting your phone and flashing if you don't know the answers to these VERY basic questions you're asking. Recipe for a brick, if you ask me.
Anyway... SEARCH about rooting and the benefits/disadvantages to custom ROMs. I suggest searching in this forum, as well as the Dream forum, as there are numerous stickies there that will shed light on what you're asking.

Sent you a pm, thread closed.

Need a little Clarifiction

Hi all,
I was wondering for a while now, I followed the Unlckr guide on how to root my HTC Hero, but I didn't really get when the rooting stopped and the cooked ROM began.
So, breaking it down: -
What is the Cyanogen Recovery Image for? Is that just so we can enable the custom ROMs?
Putting in the new ROM, does that then mean my phone is then rooted? If I put in another Stock ROM (as I still haven't found a Donut update for Hero anywhere yet), will it be unrooted again?
What does Rooted mean anyway?
Many thanks if you can answer any or all these questions, I'm eager to know what I actually did
Take it no one knows or cares to clarify?
You might have better luck if you post this in the Q&A section. However, I reckon you'll find the answers you're looking for if you use the search.

[Q] Some questions about rooting HTC Wildfire ?

Hi,
I have bought a brand new HTC Wildfire and am awaiting for it to be delivered. It is on Vodafone (uk).
I would like to root my phone when i get it and would appreciate your time if you could help answer some questions i have.
1) If i root my phone can i revert back if i want to? by this i mean go back to the Vodafone default, sorry don't know what they call it, basically so it's back with Vodafones custom android or whatever it is they call it.
2) I guess i will loose everything on the phone like apps etc? can i backup everything before hand?
3) I would like Android 2.2 which i believe is the latest version, by rooting the phone how would i go about then updating to Android 2.2? would i just need to check for updates from the HTC website or something?
4) I here about all these custom roms, can someone explain what these custom roms are? are they modified versions of android or something?
5) If i am able to update to Android 2.2 does that mean i can install apps on the sd card to save the memory in the phone as this would really benefit me?
6) Do i need to root the phone to install Android 2.2 on it?
Maybe i don't need to root the phone to get Android 2.2, if not does anyone have a guide on how i can do this please?
Thanks for any help and sorry if these questions have been answered before.
I did read the UnRevoked Guide which has explained things a bit and sounds the easiest way and red all the replies to.
Thanks
MR
1) Yes. You do this by finding the relevant RUU on the internet and then flashing it to your phone.
2) Rooting does not make you lose any of your apps, it just gives you more access to your phone in a way. When you install a custom ROM you can use a program like Titanium Backup to backup all your apps. Also you make a Nandroid backup of your phone that you can recover in case something goes wrong.
3) Over the air (OTA) updates of Android 2.2 will be coming before Christmas it is thought so if that is all you want you could wait. There are a few different 2.2 based ROMs available on this forum if you look through the threads. This thread lists the different ROMs with links to each thread and there are some links to guides as well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822181
4) The custom ROMs are community modified versions of Android that provide something different to the stock ROM. Some of them have HTC Sense, some of them are the standard Android interface. Which one you choose all depends on what you want out of your phone. See the link above for more info.
5) Yes a feature of Android 2.2 is apps2SD. This is available in the custom ROMs.
6) If you don't want to root your phone then you can wait for the OTA update of 2.2 from Vodafone. If you don't want to wait then you will have to root your phone.
I believe those answers to your questions are correct although you could be better waiting for a more experienced member to reply. I suggest you read as much as you can about rooting and installing custom ROMs so you can make sure you are making the right decision and that you know what you are doing.
You need to be aware that rooting your phone will void your warranty.
Hi,
Thanks for replying, this has really helped answering my questions
Thanks
MR

So, I purchased a MT4G. Now what?

Just purchased (again if you will, lol) a MT4G...if you read my other thread, you'd know I'm a total noob to Android, having had an iphone since the first one was able to get unlocked. So, I'm behind the times on these.
What do I do first? What are the things I need to do? Download? What are some other sites I should/need to know about? Enlighten me, please

First of all welcome!
well the number one site for all things android is XDA Developers so you are in the right place
if you want full customization ability, the first thing you need to do is root your phone. This will let you uninstall "uninstallable apps", and change almost every aspect of your phone. after doing this, you can install a custom recovery letting you do full backups (aka, nandroid). also rooting your phone with a custom recovery will let you flash new roms, which will let you change the complete android experience. flashing will also let you upgrade to the new 2.3 Gingerbread version of android.
Everything you need can be found here (the "everything" link i keep mentioning):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866175
Rooting:
There are many ways to root. check the "everything" link for guides:
1. True Permroot and S-Off is the fullest root (what most people prefer, and also unlocks your phone to use with other companies sim cards.
2. Guide to permroot...the lighter version of the true permroot
3. visionary+, this is the easiest way to obtain permroot (identical to number 2 but is an app for easy accomplishment)
check out the guide in the "everything" link under the "rooting and s-off section" if you have trouble
Recovery 2.x.x.x (you will need 3.0.0.x if you want to use a gingerbread rom see further details):
To flash Clockwork Recoery (aka custom recovery), root your phone and download rom manager from the market, then click flash recovery. if this doesnt work, check the "everything" you need link for installing clockwork recovery through adb (adb is the command prompt delvelopment for android, the link on how to set that up is also in the "everything" link

MIUI: A chinese rom ported to the mytouch 4g (two versions available, Gr8Gorilla and eVilD's, but both are the same basic thing)

Gr8Gorilla - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=924610
CM6: Android without mySense or anyother manufacturer customizations, but has many user-demanded cusomizations. This is FROYO, aka android 2.2
DesireHD/Gorilla Sens port: This a froyo, Sense UI Port, this is pretty much the rom that comes on the HTC Evo

G2 Port: this is just like CM6, but without any customizations

CM7/Gingerbread: This is CM6, but on gingerbread. (my favorite )

I'm gonna follow this thread because I will be buying a MT4G soon as well... or the Vibrant...

THANKS! That will give me plenty to read about and go over on the train tomorrow!

[Q] Haven't been on XDA for a while :( few questions

Hey guys I got a few questions,
1. Well its been a long time since I installed an android ROM on my HD2 so I have no idea what i installed at all. Is there any way finding out ?
2. Are there any new programs/new things that should be installed on an HD2
3. Any thing else you reccomend ?
4. How can i remove everything safely from the android rom i have and the bootloader i have.
5. Are there any good Gingerbread ROMS thats well maintained and has sense or thats actually pretty popular ?
6. Any things you might think i might need to know ? Because last time i logged in XDA was like January and alot probably has changed....
From what I know:
Android ROM version: 2011/02/02 gpc_hd2_gingerbread_v1.5
Bootloader?: by cotulla AMGLDR V1.3
I forgot how to use everything etc etc . Please kindly help me
EDIT: Umm, If possible are there any good stock roms or closest to being a stock ?
Well, for number 1 for me under settings>about phone>mod version it tells me that I am using 'Cope and WarrenB's AmeriCanAndroid', but dunno about the rest. Maybe you should search the forums for gpc_hd2_gingerbread and see what results you find.
I think you can find the answers for you questions in my thread, check it out
thanks if i want to clear everything, even the bootloader how? do i just use the task 29 method where you put a stock rom on the sd card and hold the down volume while on boot ?
IMHO you don't need to do a task29. Just make sure you have the correct Clockwork partition layout for the ROM you are installing (it will be mentioned in the ROM's thread).
If you are looking out for a new ROM, I really suggest you take a look at Typhoon's ROM here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933951
It needs a 150M System partition and 5M cache partition.

Got a HTC Desire HD , someone help(noob questions ..)

Ok, so i had an optimus one, but this is completley different so please help...or point me to some help pages and stuff
I bought an HTC DESIRE HD , as i notice is rooted, it has RCMixHD 6.0.0.1(android 2.3.3 Sense 2.1) ,
kernel V2.6.35.10 - [email protected] march 29
So :
What do i need to install a new ROM ?
I read something about some radio vers, what up with that??
And if i find something else to ask, i will write here !
Thanks in advance , sorry for being a noob
reading is fundamental. i researched HTC phones months before i bought one(came from blackberry). after i got my DHD i stumbled across "rooting". so i did months of research before i rooted my phone. i still feel like im a noob because im still learning and finding new things out. my point is...you should do the research and not expect people to feed you the answers you are looking for. im not trying to be a ****. just shedding some enlightenment.
sent from the Penh.
Yep, no one can click a button and make you learn things like that.
Check the how to threads in the subforum "Desire HD Android Development".
Everything you need is there.
Read, read, read.
well i have experience in android , had 3 devices before but htc devices are a little diff . since my device is rooted , just needed some small steps to move around here
OK ! at least please tell me if can safely update RIL ... i have an older vers and how i can install android revolution ROM
THX!
Start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076&highlight=clockwork
See point number 3 (last lines in the first post), to check if you have ClockWorkMod Recovery installed (you probably have). Do it anyway, to update to new version, if it's the case.
You will flash your roms through ClockWorkMod Recovery.
To reach it, shutdown your phone. Then hold the volume down key and press the ON button (top one). You're in bootloader mode. Choose recovery from the menu, using the volume keys and the On/Off button to confirm.
You will boot into ClockWorkMod Recovery. To install a rom, you would already have downloaded the file in the developer's thread and copy the zip file to the root of the sdcard. Don't mess with the zip.
From the ClockWorkMod Recovery menu, choose install zip from card.
To install radios:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896597&highlight=radio
thx joooeee !!! so i found out that my phone is ENG s-off ! that is some work not needed to do by me!
About the RIL, you will only need it if the rom has Sense. No Sense roms don't need it.
And you need to match the RIL to the Radio version installed.
ok so despite what you said, i managed to learn some stuff , i updated radio and RIL
and i have the phone for 3 hours
thx jooooe ! you really helped
Nice. You are ready to become a rom flasher addict.
yeaaah ) and the thing is that this phone has a loooooooooooot of roms ) boston and LG optimus one had few ...and those few are buggy
L.E - flashed 1st ROM ) i haaaaaaaa
As stated everything you need to know is already posted in the forums. Calling your self a noob doesn't excuse you not doing your research before opening a new thread. Come on really? No matter the device there are stickies for them all with all the info a new flasher needs to get started.
