Need a little Clarifiction - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi all,
I was wondering for a while now, I followed the Unlckr guide on how to root my HTC Hero, but I didn't really get when the rooting stopped and the cooked ROM began.
So, breaking it down: -
What is the Cyanogen Recovery Image for? Is that just so we can enable the custom ROMs?
Putting in the new ROM, does that then mean my phone is then rooted? If I put in another Stock ROM (as I still haven't found a Donut update for Hero anywhere yet), will it be unrooted again?
What does Rooted mean anyway?
Many thanks if you can answer any or all these questions, I'm eager to know what I actually did

Take it no one knows or cares to clarify?

You might have better luck if you post this in the Q&A section. However, I reckon you'll find the answers you're looking for if you use the search.

Can you flash without losing waranty?

Hi Guys, Loving the forums,
My first post, please be gentle!
I've searched but can't find how to flash my HD2.
If i flash will I lose my warranty with t mobile? (got it on t-mobile upgrade) If so is there a way of getting old rom back on there without them knowing i did anything? Is the t mobile rom openly available?
Whats the advantage with flashing?
Will I lose all settings when I flash? Cos it took be ages to tweek it!
I have 1.43.110.2 Rom version
Sorry for all these Q's
Smiley
Yes you can
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609477
as mentioned that is the tutorial I used. I got my hd2 on t-mobile upgrade too.
lots of benefits (read about them on peoples ROMs)
and I am pretty sure it voids your warranty BUT there is a 1.4 t-mobile stock ROM floating about on here so you can always restore it if you needed to.
Don't know why I couldn't find all that info when i searched, excellent and very well done. I'mthinking of flashing it when I have problems with the stock ROM but as it is I'm pretty happy with it unles someone can recommend a ROM i can't resist!
I read about backing up stock ROM just in case I needed to send HD2 bak to t-mob in future. How do you back it up, same way as data in the tutorial?
Cheers guys, I am a noob but hopefully will pick things up quick!

[Q] Some questions about rooting HTC Wildfire ?

Hi,
I have bought a brand new HTC Wildfire and am awaiting for it to be delivered. It is on Vodafone (uk).
I would like to root my phone when i get it and would appreciate your time if you could help answer some questions i have.
1) If i root my phone can i revert back if i want to? by this i mean go back to the Vodafone default, sorry don't know what they call it, basically so it's back with Vodafones custom android or whatever it is they call it.
2) I guess i will loose everything on the phone like apps etc? can i backup everything before hand?
3) I would like Android 2.2 which i believe is the latest version, by rooting the phone how would i go about then updating to Android 2.2? would i just need to check for updates from the HTC website or something?
4) I here about all these custom roms, can someone explain what these custom roms are? are they modified versions of android or something?
5) If i am able to update to Android 2.2 does that mean i can install apps on the sd card to save the memory in the phone as this would really benefit me?
6) Do i need to root the phone to install Android 2.2 on it?
Maybe i don't need to root the phone to get Android 2.2, if not does anyone have a guide on how i can do this please?
Thanks for any help and sorry if these questions have been answered before.
I did read the UnRevoked Guide which has explained things a bit and sounds the easiest way and red all the replies to.
Thanks
MR
1) Yes. You do this by finding the relevant RUU on the internet and then flashing it to your phone.
2) Rooting does not make you lose any of your apps, it just gives you more access to your phone in a way. When you install a custom ROM you can use a program like Titanium Backup to backup all your apps. Also you make a Nandroid backup of your phone that you can recover in case something goes wrong.
3) Over the air (OTA) updates of Android 2.2 will be coming before Christmas it is thought so if that is all you want you could wait. There are a few different 2.2 based ROMs available on this forum if you look through the threads. This thread lists the different ROMs with links to each thread and there are some links to guides as well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822181
4) The custom ROMs are community modified versions of Android that provide something different to the stock ROM. Some of them have HTC Sense, some of them are the standard Android interface. Which one you choose all depends on what you want out of your phone. See the link above for more info.
5) Yes a feature of Android 2.2 is apps2SD. This is available in the custom ROMs.
6) If you don't want to root your phone then you can wait for the OTA update of 2.2 from Vodafone. If you don't want to wait then you will have to root your phone.
I believe those answers to your questions are correct although you could be better waiting for a more experienced member to reply. I suggest you read as much as you can about rooting and installing custom ROMs so you can make sure you are making the right decision and that you know what you are doing.
You need to be aware that rooting your phone will void your warranty.
Hi,
Thanks for replying, this has really helped answering my questions
Thanks

[Q] Need some thorough guidance

Hey Guys,
Sorry for this post already ha. I am not familiar with this phone i am trying to help my brother out. The wiki and a lot of general info seems fairly outdated. Is this all still the most efficient way of doing things? I have not played around with the phone yet so i am going to ask some probably dumb questions. I have an SGS phone which everything seems much easier on.
The phone i need help with is the Mytouch3g 3.5mm (I believe this is the 32A from what i have read)
My question is after rooting can i use rom manager for recovery and to put a new rom on preferably the cyanogen froyo rom. I believe is listed.
If not is there any chance someone could walk me through the process. I have read up but I have not seen a step by step to getting a Rom fully installed and in the rom areas i see a lot about changing radio and such stuff.
If i could get a PM or post or even link to where i am referring to that would be great. Also how does one go about wiping this device before changing mess. Alright thank you so much for your time.

[Q] Froyo and its impac on current Roms/Kernels

Hello Earthlings,
I have a question posed to you all by me, SirNoobsalot. What i wanted to know is if someone wanted to get some custom kernels and roms and froyo what would be the best/safest way to do so. Here are the two options i know of:
1) Flash the ***** and when froyo comes out stock it then flash the ***** again.
2) Wait till froyo comes out (btw will this null the root?) then flash the ***** to a tested rom/kernel/theme etc..
Basically i wanted to know the rules of thumb for flashing and upgrading firmware. I want to avoid bricking as much as possible... for obvious reasons. I know its alwayse best to go to stock but this crap takes time, time that i should be using to do work at my office....LOL
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: All i have done is a one click root.... should i wait til froyo before i start flashing further to avoid confusion and compatability issues?
*Sorry guys if you have seen this before, i couldnt find it.... Blame it on the damn fragmentation of Android OS.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP PEEPS, appreciate it much!!! (srry for spelling)

[Q] orange debrand

hi all newbie here i need to debrand my htc touch hd from orange any ideas which is the best way to go?
thanks in advance
moved, this is not development, it is a question.
the best way to get from a software branded version to a stock htc version, is to flash either an unbranded stock rom or a customized cooked rom from the forum here.
stock roms can be found on shipped-roms.com and necessary tools and instructions on how to flash a rom, including first unlocking the device can be found on the blackstone winmo development forum (where you first posted this question).
if you have never flashed a windows mobile device before, it might take a lot of reading to get prepared, but it is worth it. also, if you decide to go through with it, any possible questions you might have, please post them here before attempting to flash, because it is always easier to clarify things in before, than restoring an (almost) broken device afterwards.
