given up trying to buy one... - Nexus One General

well I tried to buy a Nexus one, Ive now given up, credit and debit card orders refused when there is absolutley nothing wrong with either account, they are business accounts with plenty of funding.
Talk about a tad insulting!
Why on earth dont they take paypal?

Cuz it's Google... so they take Google Checkout. Have you tried non-business accounts?

For a start, make sure you put the correct details in the from for the card.
Talk to your credit card company/bank and stop complaining that it's Google that are at fault. Your CC/bank company is stopping the transaction not Google.
Phone them up and talk to them. If they tell you Google is blocking it then the CC company/bank is lying to you.
Paypal isn't a bank and isn't subject to the same controls and regulations that a cc company or bank are. You also get zero protection, in law, when using paypal. Personally I'd stay well away from them.

Exactly where in my post did I blame Google for denied transactions?
I merely stated facts, and I am also quite capable of fillling in a form or I wouldnt have been running my own business for the last 6 years!
The fact is, that it's not as simple as it should be to buy the phone, I buy goods of far greater value than a phone, and never have any problems, so why the problems buying from Google?
I thought this was a dicussion forum, just wonder how many other people have had these problems buying one?
And yes, I have talked to the bank, and its a security check that flagged up, there must be a reason that transactions are blocked and or checked for Google purchases, maybe its because its the States, most of my buying is done in europe.......
Sorry if i seem to come over a little terse, but then there isnt always too much context within written words....

I can tell you that when I bought my phone, my bank held up the transaction until I called them to let them know I was spending over $300 on a phone. You may want to do the same thing.

It is simple to buy, you just have to talk to your bank. Once of the reasons is that Google don't use 3D secure which (somewhat) guarantees that the user of the card is the owner of it. CC/Banks like 3D Secure because it passes blame (liability) to the customer (see T&C's for 3D Secure/VBV signup for your card). 3D Secure/VBV is, in truth, total crap. IIRC this was born out in a recent paper from Cambridge University in the UK that did analysis and testing on it. One card company even asked for a NEW password if you got the old one wrong 3 times!

It is but it's not a problem solely associated with buying a nexus one. It applies to all online purchasing.

It's highly likely that this is the case. We get horrendous issues with Belgian cc/banks that insist on blocking client orders and then claiming it's us that is doing the blocking.

I don't know if it would make a difference, but you can get a debit card for your Paypal account and use it.

Stop using other's people cards. =P
Really though, my order got held up for not having a phone number in the ship to information. Googles checkout/customer service for the nexus has been pretty sub par.
And I've been running a business for 8 years.

eeee by gum chuck, finally managed to get an order sent, checked the shipping info, and they managed to get the postcode totally wrong, with half the address missing.
Phoned DHL, and they were fantastic, changed all the details and made sure they were correct, she told me that they have shed loads of phone calls reference orders from google with incorrect shipping info, even though the correct details were supplied by the customers, so all I will say if you're buying one, is to check and double check every step of the process.
Man I hope the phone is worth it when it comes, i'm sure it will be, quite looking forward to it..........

Sounds to me if it were a "Google" problem, the same bad address info problem would be apparent with FedEx shipments, but only time I've heard/read about shipping issues is regarding international DHL.

digital rewards (membership) cards

Does anyone know if there is a program for the tp2 that will allow you to create digital version of membership cards with bar codes the stores offer. My buddy has one for his i-phone but I am not having any luck finding one for winmo6.
If someone wants to know of what I am talking about there is a website mycardstar.com. any help greatly appreciated.
Those cards are retarded. I prefer not to reward stupid retailers for bad behavior.

Every time a cashier asks me if I have a "reward" card or whatever they happen to call them, I want to reach over the counter and throttle them. I clutter my wallet with these cards and sift through/drag out the correct one on demand, and my "reward" is lots of junk mail delivered directly to my house.
Yay. Let's do this some more!

here's the app you're looking for: http://www.koushikdutta.com/search/label/Bar Code
however you should know (as your iPhone friend probably knows but may not admit) that the reflective nature of the screens on our phones make these difficult to work. If you have a screen protector that may work. I've tried it on my Fuze without a screen protector and it's simply too reflective. Good luck!

Don't get mad at the cashier for doing their job. Most places that have those reward cards REQUIRE the cashier to ask for the stupid cards, and most those cashiers DON'T want to ask but they'll get in trouble if they don't.
But really, if all it takes is a few cards to make you want to choke someone, perhaps you have some deeper issues that need sorting.

And besides that your an idiot if you would rather pay a higher price than play the game of the rewards card. Who goes to the grocery store and pays full price for something when just for having a card they give you a discount?
My grocery cards arent even tied to my name and address.
On that note, I am going to check out the link seems pretty handy if you ask me......

thank you for the link to the program and so far so good. I have entered about 7 of my rewards cards and the bar code is dead on. Next will be to use it later today and I will post how well the scanner reads it.

thats why you fill out the paperwork with your phone number. instead of having to carry around the card(s), your reward card number is the phone number you used when filling out the paperwork. should be pretty easy to memorize your phone number.

yes i do agree that all the cards take up lots of room in the wallet and being as minimal as i am i mean i dont even carry coins at all.
its funny that the larger corporations dont practice this i mean if our local super markets here in hawaii not to mention the pet shop here are smart enough to tie your reward card to your telephone number i mean come on it cant be that hard!
this program is a good idea but the only thing i have noticed it that a lot of these rewards cards are switching to the mag strips =(
we all just need to get on the europe/asia train where cell phones can pay for things like bus fair, convenience store runs and even vending machines
anywho thanks for the link gonna load this up and give it a try =)

What a shame!

Yes it's a shame that the globalized Google decided to sell N1 in USA and GB only...available in the rest of Europe in the spring...
Really I can't understand why after cloning iPhone customization (and not only...) Google decided also to clone the commercial strategy of the earliest Iphone 2G...Soon Apple realized that there were more iphone in Europe than in USA LOL!!!
Now how to get one in Italy? Who want to buy one for me...

What about the activation button? Does anyone know if there is some kind of activation that binds the phone to the google account from where it is bought (or is this button only for the t-mobile phone)?
Is there anything else to consider before buying it (except the high price) from ebay and using it in Europe?

Thanx for your answer.
I checked ebay and it would cost about 250$ over the real price. Really too much.
no, it only binds it to your google checkout account, not your gmail account.
so you will be able to activate it where you are
It may suck but different markets get different phones at different times. I don't know how many times I have seen a really cool phone only to discover that it will never hit the shores here in the US. This time it worked out that we got the phone.
I guess it comes down to you win some you loose some.

I'm also in Italy at the moment and I have mine on the way only I don't know if my method would work for you. I'm stationed in Sicily for the time being and I used a site called shipitapo.com. Not sure if this site would work for you but I'm willing to bet there is something similar. As for the purchasing part I just went to google checkout and setup my account so all the information was already in the system, including shipping address and credit card. Then I had my brother who is in the states log into my google account and purchase it for me. He just had to click a couple of links and because everything was already setup. Now its on the way. hopefully you can find something similar. Might be able to use a US proxy to be able to log into you google account and purchase it.
@SpiersA
good idea! I should need a brother, and in usa! About shipitapo.com, it's because Google won't ship it abroad?
Well, according to the iPhone wiki there are 6.4 million iPhones (of 33 million total) in the US alone. Considering Google is an American company, and the App Marketplace had first purchasing support in the US as well, it makes sense to distribute a handset with this much probably popularity in the areas that are easier to support first. Not to mention they partnered with T-Mobile US (an existing partner) for subsidized handset sales and will likely get a huge bump in volume just from that alone.
I have to agree with the earlier comment about how often I've seen really nice phones only to have them never show up in the US (or after they've already become quite out of date). It's nice having top-tier phones start in the US first and then move out from here. A truly global launch with so many new moving parts at once (new hardware, new version of the OS that might not be fully localized yet, thousands of market apps that still don't work with the DROID, etc) would be a total nightmare and make no sense at all.
And yesss...I found how to place an order from all over the world. Just placed mine from Italy. It has been easy...I will reveal it ad soon as I get shipping confirmation!

G2 made me pay $5 for a $1 app

Okay, so like most everyone else I've been having Android Market problems. Even on WiFi I've had to hit the "retry" button several times because supposedly there were connection failures. So I was purchasing a $1 app and then I encountered the same "connection failure" problem. So I retried several times (I guess five) and then finally on the fifth time it worked.
Fast forward, and now I have an email in my inbox from Bank of America telling me that I bought that app five times!
Who do I call about this before its "punch a rep day" at T-Mobile.

Google is who you have to contact about the purchases, as T-Mobile has absolutely no connection to the Android market outside of the free apps the offer.
Honestly, you may want to wait a bit, as the Android Market is supposed to be work to where once you purchase it once on your Google account you have it on all your android devices. My thinking behind that is maybe Google will refund $4 once they find the same app purchased 4 times on one account (By them finding that I mean a computer system detecting it).
In the end if it's a problem with the market you have to somehow get in touch with Google, and if you have specific complains about the phone you need to contact T-Mobile otherwise it's not T-Mobile's fault.
I'm sure if you write to the developer of the app, and state your case he/she will refund you.

This. I accidentally purchased Remote Desktop Client twice and the developer refunded me when I contacted him.
I sell adw themes on the market and have never seen someone get charged for the same app twice. It's pretty common for the market to have the issues, and if I had to guess I would say that Google is simply putting a hold on the funds till your refund period is up. It takes 24 hours for a transaction to be finalized on my end and prior to that o cannot refund anyone, I can only cancel the transaction. I don't think that cancelling the transaction speeds up the process of the held money being returned to you.
lol is it really necessary to blame the phone?
Okay. So I reviewed my Google Checkout tabs today and actually what had happened was there were ~7 $1 charges, probably because I hit the "retry" button ~7 times. BUT, there were only authorization charges and not app purchases. There was only one app purchase of $1.99.

So basically, it worked perfectly, and charged you only once, despite connection problems. I'd call this a win for the market system.
& agree that this shouldn't be in a phone-specific forum. Your phone had nothing to do with this, for better or ill.
When you make a purchase the bank receives electronic notification and places those funds on hold and reserves them. Google will probably probably only settle one transaction and the other holds will drop off on a few days. It happens all the time.

Best Buy Credit checks for upgrade: beware ask for personal mortgage info

Upgrading from iphone 4 to s3 and best buy wanted to do a credit check when I have been at&t customer for 4 years with account in perfect standing. They had the nerves to ask me how much my mortgage was, who my mortgage was with, and several other items pertaining to personal info.... FOR AN UPGRADE.
Best Buy did not get my business and in last 4 years we have bought all our phones at best buy which was 3 iphone 4s, 3gs, and 1 3g, and basic phone all from best buy in which within last month and half we have upgraded one person on the plan to a i4 and another to iphone 4s and did not get asked these questions, but for the S3 best buy needed this info...
Not Pleased. Anyone else gone through the BS?
I got my phone there and it was very quick and easy, no credit check. Sorry man that sucks!
Go straight to the manager... they can't ask you or run your credit for upgrades.. only new line and even that they can't ask you about your mortgage, that's ridiculous.

well at&t store manager said they have never done anything like that for an upgrade. and sure as hell ain't telling no employee of best buy or anywhere my personal and mortgage information.
I saw this when I used to sell cellphones for the various providers. It is usually the credit check people who want the info, not (insert carrier and store here). It is a method of identification to make sure you are who you say you are. Cellphone fraud is a very big thing, especially for the super high end android devices, blackberries (well, they were back then...) and iPhones.
Though I never heard mortgage, I did see plenty of car ownership stuff, address, old address, old car, etc etc. Random stuff really.

I work for BBY service center and even though I don't work in the store, I know that they ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ASK THAT INFO. The only way they are allowed to even check your credit is if you're apply for a BBY credit card.
I'd call their support and talk to their manager. I'v already heard many stories of BBY support lines bending over backwards to satisfy their customers so you may be able to get a discount on the phone or at least a gift card.

I work for AT&T and haven't heard of this on an upgrade. They are allowed to ask you about mortgage info or ANYTHING pertaining to your credit info so don't think otherwise. But like I mentioned, credit no longer plays a role when you have been an AT&T customer for longer than 6 months, even when adding a line they check account history add only occasionally check credit. Never for an upgrade.

Crazy. The employee themselves asked you? Not supposed to do that, where I worked we had to call in to the credit people themselves, hand the phone to the customer and let them confirm the information.
Don't shop there bro dump best buy they are going under anyways and they offer crap for customer service I would walk out and go to an att store.

I've worked for an at&t Authorized retailer for 8 years. at&t has started refreshing credit profiles on customers accounts as a fraud prevention measure. I would say once a week we run into this and these questions that are asked are referred to as OOW questions (Out of Wallet) meaning the customer in the store should be able to answer these without issue. We are instructed to read the questions and then select the answer the customer gives us. At the end if the customer answered everything satisfactorily we can continue. If they don't answer the questions satisfactorily we have to call analyst review and tell them we have the customer in the store and the ID matches the person in the store. We also have to have a secondary ID such as a Credit Card and the name has to match the drivers license. I know this sounds ridiculous but there is so much fraud in this business you have to understand it is for your protection. The extra five minutes this process takes is easier than trying to fight identity theft. Don't blame BestBuy for doing what at&t is requiring.
Had this happen to me when Upgrading my Sprint line. The questions were on their keypad card swipe thing, not an employee asking the questions. I purposely answered incorrectly and then the guy went through the upgrade anyway. Think there are two ways they can do an upgrade, one may be quicker than the other? Quicker maybe asking those questions?
regardless no way in hell i'm telling someone how much i pay for my house every month to qualify me for an upgrade phone when i've been customer for 4 years in perfect standing. in no way shape or form should you ever be asked personal info such as mortgage information for an upgrade, maybe for a new account, MAYBE, but not for an upgrade.

HTC Champions is offering carrier employees a m9 at $299 off contract

HTC has a program called Champions for employees of carrier retail stores. They are offering them a M9 at $299 off contract. Furthermore if they buy a M9 from the discount program they can trade it in for the next One at no extra charge with their "One for Life" program. I posted the screen shot from the email on my G+ page: https://plus.google.com/+PatrickHill/posts/Mr462GhpLbw
So if you work in a carrier store go sign up for Champions and get your M9 for only $299
is this us only?
My store wasn't listed, but it's a small mom and pop shop that IS an authorized T-Mo dealer. Hope I'm able to be considered and that it isn't closed to only those who work at the retail stores.
I wish I was working at a carrier retail store. Ugh maybe next time... Wondering if a friend who works there can do the favor for none workers?
These deals are generally restricted to corporate retail stores by the phone manufacturers as they do actually verify that you're eligible before allowing you to make the purchase. Could be different for this deal but I'm assuming it's not.
I am a member of HTC champions. there is a strict verification policy to ensure that you are a corporate retailer employee. The community is meant to help dealers learn about HTC and interact with other corporate employees.

Did you use your work email if you have one? Just wanted to make sure cuz I just used my personal email to sign up but I dont know if they use the corporate email to verify or anything (I have one if they need it). And would you mind saying how long it took for you to get verified?
I went to the Montclair, New Jersey HTC event on 4-9 to pick up mine.
I should really get a part time job at a store so I can get these kind of perks. I sell enough phones usually just by talking to people about phones and helping them decide then some of these sales reps I usually school any of the young sales reps that try to help me when I'm in a store.. I actually cut into one guy's sale at AT&T because he was telling this customer sh** that just was false and set him straight real fast.. haha
Are we sure this is US only? I really hope not. I'm Canadian and my store was listed when I signed up... It even allows Canadian addresses (listing provinces and allowing postal codes, etc). I'd be deeply disappointed if we're left out of this. Does anyone know?

Sorry for the long response time.
I pretty sure that you have to set it up through your work email. You just find your store in the list and I think you also get verified with your work email.
I'm not too sure how long it took to verify but on the discount page it mentioned that if you recently created an account, it could take up to 2-3 days to process if you just started as it's a different website that you buy from and separate from HTC Champions.
I set up HTC champions well over a year ago and kind of fuzzy on the exact details but use your work email for everything HTC and you will be fine.
Edit: Found this on the promo page
Please allow for up to 48 hours if you are newly registered to Champions.

So that's the time you might have to wait and I honestly don't see this selling out quickly as it's not a very popular phone.
Did anybody get a shipping notification?

Judging by the content of your post history and your impatience I would bet you're someone who doesn't work at a carrier store, who got into Champions, got an order in and are now waiting to see if they will actually ship it or if you will get busted and it be cancelled... If that's not the case I apologize but if that is the case (which I would think someone who worked at a carrier store would be more knowledgeable than the content and questions you've asked in your posts.. for example.. asking if the GS5's all had yellow screens or if it was just yours.. if you had worked in a carrier store you could have compared it to many others in stock or that you sold) then I hope you do get busted and the order doesn't ship. I didn't post this for people to take advantage.. I posted it for legit carrier employees who might not even know about the program... Again.. If I'm wrong I apologize.

Bad day at work? Or you had a case of the Mondays? What ever it maybe and judging for your post and tone it looks like you're taking out your frustion on me. If you have a problem with I said you should PM me instead of trying to publicly humiliating me on XDA.
Now the reason why I ask is because I know someone who works at a ATT and was able to convice him to order one for me since he is part of HTC champion. Since you made this thread for people who work in retail carrier stores, I figured I would ask
for example.. asking if the GS5's all had yellow screens or if it was just yours..

Going through your post history you answered a similar question on how your HTC m9 screen was "green" and it was the resullt of glue? How did you know this? What is your evidence?
