Hay everybody, pls help me check if this is normal or my replaced phone is another defective one. thanks!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jtl_N3rBxc
some information:
1. I have closed the camera app normally. I didn't suddenly took out the battery while the app is running.
2. The noise is actually pretty loud even with the battery cover on.
3. I used normal strength to do the experiment in the video. I didn't intentionally increase the strength to make it a problem.. Just like you casually put the phone on the table ...
Thanks!
yes shaking the **** out of it will probaby jack it up! just kidding mine don't do it
so bad luck i am ... gonna shake HTC in order to get my money back from their mouth..
The noise itself is normal, afaik everyone's phone make that sound.. However, and this could simply be the way it was recorded, your's sounds louder than both N1's have held (the two I had were identical). Again, this could simply be the way it was recorded.

Thanks bofslime, I would say the actual noise is louder that the one in that video. My original phone only makes noise while taking pictures. If you shake it, it won't do so. But this replacement does. That's why I become so nervous and want to check how's everyone's doing.
Thanks for your reply.
The consensus is that it's the auto focus mechanism on the camera rattling. Mine does it too and I suspect most (every?) other nexus one does too.
It's kinda annoying, but nothing 'wrong' as such.

its quite normal imho. mine does it too.
I hadn't read the query just clicked on the video. Figured it was some nexus porn. *excuse comment this is of no value*
My camera rattles a little bit too when I shake it and/or give it a light tap on the battery cover near the camera. Hoping it's normal....

I'm sure this is something attributable to the mechanics of the camera module but...
Hold your Hero near the bottom. Then lightly tap the camera end against your other hand. Do you hear something kinda loose/shaking? I think it's maybe the autofocus mechanism, as I hear the same sort of sound when the camera activates.
Just wondering if you all notice this too?

Nope, nothing at all with mine. All sounds... well there is no sounds, its just solid and well built
Hmm... anyone else notice this?
This is a bump for anyone who can confirm or deny that their Hero has this issue, before I seven-day it for another one. I don't want a slightly rattly phone
Cheers.
Yeah - I feel a slight vibration. Like a camera autofocus system. Not a problem, feels well built, but it's definitely there.
Yes, I can hear the "rattle" too - I seriously doubt it is indicative of a problem though.
Regards,
Dave
No noise on mine sorry
You guys saying "Nope no noise on mine" must be deaf , I work for Orange in the UK and we have 10 Graphite Heros in the stockroom and they all do this, also a friend has a white hero and his does the same incase you guys thought it might be only on the Graphite ones Orange stock.
Im pretty sure its the autofocus, so i wouldnt worry! and the guys saying they cant hear it must not be listening for the right sound! faint tapping noise when you gently pat the phone on your palm.
Yeh that is it exactly. It's a bit annoying as im easily irritated by that kind of thing. Good to know its normal tho, guess I won't send it back now. Actually I heard the same noise from my friends touch HD today aswell.
Just seemed quite noticeable on mine but I'm probably imagining that.
It detracts somewhat from the otherwise solid build, that a slight rattle can be heard when you kinda toss the phone around in your palm or from hand to hand. Makes it feel a bit less solid.
just wondering if any one with this phone wouldnt mind holding the phone to there ear whilst the camrea focuses as mine clicks very quietly and just wondering if they all do it or if mines faulty!
Cheers Guys
The camera is a small piece of hardware held in a small magnet driven cage. It moves slightly back and forth when focusing.
but is it suposed to click quietly?
I wondered why my camera made that sound too
Mine's always clicked and I've never had any problems with it - I just figure it's meant to be that way.

Well mine makes no sound at all when i focus, and when i shake the phone (how this issue first came to light) i can barely hear it. Other people however have reported a much louder rattle.
If yours is noticably loud, and/or sounds like gears clicking, perhaps you have a badly mounted camera, and should get it replaced.
ok glad to see other people have herd the noise i guess it just how it is
My Camera makes no clicks when focusing, but ive just deafened myself when holding close to my ear and taking a picture!! that shutter sound is LOUD that close up!!
But if i shake my phone it does rattle.. its just the volume rocker, but also the bottom buttons are a little loose...
Went into the 02 shop and checked with 2 of there HD2 and they do click very quitely like mine
+1 ...
a common issue perhaps ....

Or how it is meant to function?
A mechanical/moving parts-based focus system will always make noises.
I also can hear the "clicking", more like a distorted sound when focusing to near objects.

I wonder its normal or not, cause I don't realize when taking photo outdoors.
Till I tried in my room which is very quiet & can hear it clearly.
Hope its not a broken mechanism or might just be the focusing of gears.
So far I've never dropped my HD2 nor hard shocking force to it.
Hi,
mine make a slight clic when focusing, but I clearly remember that my old sony W810i make that noise too, for me it seems normal for an autofocus device...
mine had a soft click too. but could'nt be heard when u taking a photo, just by holding near your ear it can be heard.
Every piece of machinery that I have with auto focus makes that kind of sounds - Video cameras, photo cameras, my old Asus P535, so it is PERFECTLY normal.
Sorry for bumping the thread.
I guess then it is normal to have similar (but more quiet) clicking when camera is switched off and you put the phone one the table for example
If you are not very gentle of course
Mine clicks too. Very silent noise. Can hear it not only when using WM, but also in Android, so i presume it's a hardware thing.
Sent from my HD2
The camera lens on the HD2 is likely like alot of smaller camera lenses and CD/DVD drive lenses. Think of a speaker with the voice coil that moves up and down, then replace the speaker cone with a lens. An electromagnet makes it move up and down to focus. The clicking you're hearing is likely the mechanical system hitting either the min or max stop point.
I hear it on mine too, never really bothered me since i understand how they work. Its also why you might hear a slight rattle when the camera is off. The optical system is mounted on very light springs, its going to rattle around when it doesnt have current flowing though the electromagnet to hold the lens stable.
If you have a broken CD/DVD drive tear it apart and check out how the lens is mounted in the optical pickup for a better understanding of the mechanics
Hey all, watching some flash videos today made me notice how poorly the N1 puts sound out the back speaker, even compared to my old G1. I remember back in my Blackberry days that people used to mod the backs to "let more sound get out", and so I started looking into this...
First off, the speaker is GINORMOUS in relation to the slit. If you look inside the back where the speaker is, you can see a little internal grille, and the small slit for sound to escape. There's also a TON more room where that grille isnt attached to the back (same shape as the slit, only about 5x the size) that could be milled out pretty easily, and still retain the "keep crap out of the back" feature of the grille.
So, this leaves me with a few questions:
Where can I get a replacement back, in case my mill catches a bit more than I anticipate?
Anyone else interested? I figure if I set up to do one, I might as well bang a few others out instead of setting up multiple times.
Once I get a second back, I will be going at this with pics and hopefully notable improvement in projecting sound into my hand, and back toward my face!
I might not be a software hacker, but when it comes to this sort of thing, I figure its the best way I can give back to the community!
Give HTC support a call and tell them your cover doesn't line up properly(I don't think any of them do) they'll send you out a replacement. If they don't they can sell you one for ten bucks I think.
Hope to hear good results from your mod, might do it myself.
I actually think the small slit does something to amplify the sound..
Take the back off, play music, put it on. Notice it gets louder when you place it back on..
I don't know though, but I'll be following this thread!

Yea, I think the OP should test and see if there's even a noticeable difference without the back cover. I would think not...
Try removing the cover, sounds WAY worse.
Yes, I completely realize the back sounds bad off, its acting as a resonator, or isolating front from back waves of the speaker, which causes phase cancellation. Thus why im not removing the cover, just making the one hole bigger. It SHOULD not lose the "low end" that it has with the back on (if you want to call it that.
Either way, Im hacking at least one up, Ill post results!
Do it. (poor phone!)
I would suggest to replace the speaker with a Desire one, some people who have both phones pretend it's way louder on Desire, and yes it's the same form factor and size so it should fit
It is quite a bit louder without the cover but sounds bad due to the lack of resonance.
Shouldnt be too bad with just an enlargement, make sure you put something to block out dust. Let us know how it goes.
I've found that attaching one of these to the back quite useful...
or try a vuvuzela
I think the engineer who designed that whole was well aware of resonance qualities. If you make that whole and turns out better, you should apply to HTC job hehe...
@Hummeroid
Good idea ...
What about drilling mini-holes arround the "slit" ?
Instead of making ONE BIG hole ...
Very Interesting mod idea...I think the small drilled holes would be an effective test.
Or just cup your left hand around the back of the phone.
I looking for the out come of this.

hah, I've never seen anyone else do it, but I do this all the time if I'm showing people a video or am in a noisy setting (ie. party)

Nah, everyone does it.. I mostly do it when I want to listen to something quiet, I can turn it down and redirect the sound towards me.
I actually have a really good pair of earphones. I prefer that the main speaker is in the back, instead of in the earpiece like some phones. Prevents earspeaker blowout and call quality is damn good with this phone so far.

I try to put it up against a wall. Your hand can work to absorb sound waves, thus deadening sound and lowering overall quality; but drywall bounces the sound waves back nearly impeccably. Desks, etc, any hard surface should do the trick.
Like it has a spring inside?
No, I'm not kidding here!
Hold the phone between your index finger and thumb about 1/4 way from the bottom and tap the back near the camera while listening. You can actually feel it too, like there is a spring inside. Not sure if it's the battery terminals or the display inside. I have the 16GB Korean model if that makes any difference.
I will try using the voice recorder to see if it can be recorded in case nobody else's phone does this. I've had it in many different cases as well, does not make any difference in the sound.
EDIT: The voice recorder and video camera (using the same mic) do not pic up this "anomaly". It would have to be recorded with another device.

How often do you go around tapping your phone with it up to your ear?
I think it's either the camera lens or the vibration module. This is very normal, don't worry about it.

Just curious as to what's inside causing this. I felt it, if you hold it up to your ear you can hear a distinct "boing" when it's tapped.
Speaking of camera lens is the "stabilizer" function of the camera digital or active, i.e. suspended elements servo controlled, etc. ?
None of my other phones do this.
Some may call me crazy, but I do enjoy that sound. Not quite as good as the ting my s2 used to make doing the same thing
I get it too. Not worried about it.

s4 weird feel
I noticed that too and they replicated that feel to the charger that came with it. kinda weird.
same here
i have it also...and is actually very bad. i tried to get it replaced, but the guys from samsung said it's normal and it will not affect the hardware of the phone. the phone is working great...without any problems, lags or errors so i think i will leave it that way. i watched a video on youtube about how to disassemble the s4, and i think is the vibrator motor. i hope so...because if is not the next think would be the display. if someone has any other clues please let us know
Its just the vibration module, the force makes it spin slightly causing the "springy" feeling like a light vibration, same with plugging your charger in its just haptic feedback bud

Helloooo everyone. I only have one question, want to confirm or debunk something with the wider group of people. I may be just over reacting but thats just the jewish part of me considering the rma or a refund, kidding, lol. Whenever I shake my phone by the ear I can hear a lil something being loose in the case of my g6. Do You also experience the same thing? Can it truly be the autofocus thingy, or something else?
I don't hear anything when I shake my phone. Is it your phone, or do you have your phone in a case? If so, have you tried removing and shaking both separately?
Sent from my LG-LS993 using Tapatalk
Well, it happens with a firm shake, and the vibration inside is very delicate. Appreciate the feedback
It could be the OIS on the main camera. I don't hear a shaking but my hearing isn't that good either lol
It's the camera stability, it's perfectly normal. If you put your ear next the the camera and shake the phone quickly you should hear it. Also try it while the camera app is open and the stability is working, you shouldn't hear anything.
Damn, I can hear it just the same with the camera app.

Is it because of them dual lenses? The sound does diminish depending on the lense Im using.

I can hear it and i think thats perfectly normal, probably for every phone. Don't really know what it is but i was always suspecting it was gyroscope or something like that. My LG G3 also had this same sound when shaking.

It's OIS, or optical image stabilization.
Ok. Thank You all for help! I get real concerned really easy. I only bought my G6 a few days ago. If it wasnt for my 4yo daughter pushing the sim needle into the sound cancellation mic hole on top during my brief absence in the room right after I brought the thing home Id be completely chill rofl. )
Sorry to reply years later, but I just dropped my G6 and then tested it, and shook it hard, and noticed same rattling lol. I took my fiancé's iPhone that also has OIS etc, iPhone 6S that is, and although it sounds tinier, the rattle is still there.
The reason why some owners don't notice the rattle and some do, is because it solely depends on how hard they're shaking their phone AND the direction or way they're shaking it. That is all there is to it.
Your phone is awesome and not broken, at least when it comes to this. You might have a totally different phone by now lol!
Cheers!
