Low & Delayed Ringing - Omnia II General

Thanks for starting the segment. Just bought OMNIA II 8GB in India and the problem is when a call comes it is initially very low and the goes up and this cannot be changed through the usual routes. Also the ring itself starts after 3 rings at the callers end. Any help is appreciated.
BTW, Its WM 6.1. Wm 6.5 is not yet available.

This is a Samusung WM specialty (or they call it feature). The first 3 secs are always "subdued". It happens with all Samsung WM. Nothing can be done to change it. You just have to learn to get used to it. Look on the bright side, when you're in an office setting, you can usually pickup the call before it gets bursting.

Should have left the choice to the user. Guess, they must have recvd complaints but have successfully resisted all efforts at correcting themselves. Nice surprise in addition to the half assed UI called touchwiz or whatever. Tks anyway

Yes, agreed with you that they should leave that as an option for user. About the Touchwiz, well , most Omnia 2 users just dont use that. it's memory hogging and doesnt allow creating shortcuts for many programs.
I would say MAJORITY of Omnia 2 users opt for the Spb Mobile Shell instead.
You should really testdrive it yourself, and you will be delightfully surprised how well it integrates and how much smoother the whole i8000 experience is.

i agree that the ring should have been optional. but personally i like it. it saves me from suddenly jerking in surprise when my phone is on top of a table.
being easily irrated, i like the "soft" warning before it gets loud.

I did try the Shell. But what stopped me was the very rudimentary contact program. i have a large database and I absolutely need a t9 search on every field in the contact list which is not there in Shell if I am not mistaken.
Though for some reason Samsung killed the threading of sms, one feature of this touchwiz I find useful though is the search in sms. Guess as a heavy cell user, over the years, I have developed some specific likes & dislikes. Like I absolutely need to see the future appointments on the today screen & launch particular program from today. etc..

Agreed. But its peculiar. It rings softly first. Then it just vibrates (if u hv vibrate on) but no rings (??? crazy or what ???), then the ringing becomes louder. The whole process takes 5-7 seconds. Now, if u miss these (u can if u r busy or a little distance away from the cell), by the time u hear the louder ring and go to pick up the phone, the caller may go away. It is happening with me.

a solution
to prevent the delay in getting the initial ring, I advice to stop the lock screen from setting/ display and light/ lock screen
then make the device wake up with the lock button only
setting/general settings/ button/wake up/ lock button only
regarding the initial low ring tone, still no solution

Go into your sound settings (Settings -> Sound Settings -> Ring) and check the alert type. Sounds like you have "Vibrate then ring" selected. If you select "Vibrate and ring", it'll function a little bit smoother.

don't think this has anything to do with locks. Any way mine is set as u hv said. Considering yr suggestion & the another here and that my settings are exactly as u both hv suggested, cud it b that samsung has made such a mess that certain issues are machine specific ? Wudn't that b just great!!!

Its already set that way. I think I may have overeacted with initial missing 3 rings. I think I missed it due to some network issue. Thanks anyway.

No fix for 3sec low ring till now..
I just increased the first 3 seconds of my ringtone.. good workaround..

He means you can use "Audio Editor" program on PC to increase the volumn of the first 3 seconds of your ringone.

I actually do have (on Verizon i920) a delay of 3-4 rings (at the callers end) before my phone rings or vibrates. I think I have a bad phone as no one else seems to have this issue.

List of bugs / Problem in Hermes devices

I am running the iMate JasJam 1.31 ROM (which came with the Australian Telstra branded device)
The most common problems so far:
-Sound stops working, will only vibrate. This happen if you switch to silent mode, when you get back to normal sound mode, it stays in silence mode until you reboot. this doesn't always happen. can't reproduce it consistently
-BT turns off by itself once in a while, you have to turn BT on in comm manager
-The most annoying: If you have a data session active (not transfering any data) and a BT connection active (like headset, GPS), then you can't receive a call. The person calling you won't even get to voicemail. it just hangs up on them. if you disconnect the data session or turn off BT then you can receive calls again
-Switching username in MSN will often make messenger crash, you have to kill the process and start it again
-Sometimes will hang for no reason: you need to press the reset button
Then you have the GUI weirdness which make you think: what did they drink the day they designed this software?
Like if you receive a SMS, it will show you an extract of it at the bottom of the screen, you'll get off the following choice:
-Reply on the left soft menu
-More on the right soft menu with the option (delete, call sender, Save as Read, dismiss)
What if I just want to read the full content in the Messaging application? you can't.
If you select Mark as Read immediately it doesn't mark the SMS as read in the messaging application and you still get the notification in the top screen. You have to do "Mark as Read" twice.
Something I miss from my symbian phone, if you have a bluetooth headset paired with a unit (or your car kit) when you answer a call using the BT headset button, the call goes to the BT headset, but if you answer using the device itself, it doesn't go on the BT. This is great if you want to take a personal call in a car for example, and don't want your passenger to hear what's going on.
On WM5, you can't control that. it aways goes to BT if the headset/handsfree is set.
When the keyboard is open, if you tap on a text field, the screen keyboard will show up (and text half of the screen). Why show a software keyboard all the time when you have a full qwerty keyboard available !? Sometimes the keyboard doesn't show up, but I'm yet to understand the logic behind it. it's not consistent
And then of course you have some inconsistencies here and there, like the device will stop working as it did 2 minutes prior. You try it again: bank it works.
I wonder if Microsoft or HTC have any QA !
What other issues have you guys noticed? Or could this be that those problems are unique to thie version of the ROM...
Jean-Yves
I agree, there are quite a lot of interface issues, although I think most of these lie with wm5 as opposed to the unit itself.
here are some of my thoughts:
1) the sms bubble relly annoys me too. why can't I tap the bubble to open the message in full?! often the message is too long to fit in the notification. i'm pretty sure this is a wm5 design fault.
2) the software keyboard bugged me senseless until I realised that if you just keep typing on the 'proper' keyboard it disappears. I used to continually spend the time closing it!
3) the alarms in wm5 are pretty lame. if your phone is on silent they won't sound. you only get a warning if you set an alarm whilst the phone is in vibrate mode. the alarm should simply override the sound settings.
4) contacts - I think searching for contacts is poorly handled which makes one handed operation pretty difficult. it takes too many clicks to select a category to filter by and the display when someone is calling you is a farse! you get a tiny notification with tiny writing! I bought photo contacts pro to help with this and whilt it has its flaws I reckon it is worth it.
having said this, i'm loving my tytn. it is way better than my previous smartphone (nokia 6680). the symbian s60 based phones seem to just be half-assed to me.
cheers
Just to comment on the SMS notification.
I am on MDA Vario II from T-Mobile, and when I get an SMS my left button says read! so If I choose that he whole message is displayed. So I guess it is not the OS but the Operator or manufacturer who screwed up on this one.
I add that in some case the tytn wirless modem function dont work.
So you can use the tytn like modem.

Thanks for that one too. Perhaps we need a thread for non-obvious key combinations or single presses. Perhaps what seems to be statin' the bleedin' obvious to some folks are just things that others have never thought of or tried. Often I discover things through pure chance. Another useful one I used to need a lot was the D-Pad and messaging key combo to go straight to screen alignment.
Mike
What about a new wiki page for all key combinations of the Hermes?

Im on T-Mobile too, and for me it depends on the length of the message ive received. If its a message that doesnt entirely fit in the "preview" popup box at the bottom it will give me a "View" option which will open the full message up in Messaging, otherwise it gives a "Reply" option as i have read the whole message anyway...
More to the list
While waiting to get my new phone (used to have PDA2k, and Jamin that I just sold after using for 3 months due to my disatisfactionof performance, sound quality, etc...) I had some chances to play the JasJam (Arabic ROM). First I noted that the call button is very badley placed at the verry bottom of the front as I felt the phone will fall out of my hand (unlike the HTC where the green botton is separatly on the very left side, as I see it in photos).
Second, if pull the out memory card for any reason and push it bacj in, the phone never recognizes the card again unless you soft rest it.
I hope that this issue will be resloved in the next ROM update by imate
Here it is:

Yes, I too only discover the mail button could make you cycle between accounts. And this is not in the manual...
Another thing bugging me (I will pass on all the bugs and how to lock the device: there're just too many ways)...
There are 3 OK buttons, all doing the exact same thing. And the scroll wheel just just the same thing as the direction keypad.
If you want to read an email this is extremely annoying as you can't easily read it without tapping the screen to jump to the next screen page ; as up/down or the wheel will jump from embedded number to number.
It would be great if you could differentiate the wheel from the up/down, and if the OK buttons could be assigned another function. Right now there are a few buttons you can't assign.
Ok, this should be a rule to post here: list/describe one bug ...
With activesync program running, try changing the name of the PDA. Will make the device unresponsive for a few minutes.
My experience thus far..
Been using my T-mobile Vario 2 (ROM 1.21.110.3) for a couple of weeks now and have had a couple of problems:
1) The buttons don't work all the time. I've noted this when trying to pick up a call or dismiss a notification of something. I had thought I might have left the device locked but this isn't the case. It's a bit annoying that this only happens sometimes though.
2) About 50% of the time when I call comeone they can't hear me although I can hear them fine.
That's all I've discovered so far, but it's handy to note the comments about the pressing of the envelope button.
Given the problems I've experienced so far are generally located in the lower part of the phone, I'm beginning to suspect the phone has some sort of hardware fault so I've called the shop up and am going to swap it for a new one. Has anyone else experienced these issues?

You are absolutely right there. Noticed it today. long message you get a view and if it fits the popup then you get a reply. This is actually quite clever.

(25 November 2008) Haptic Feedback 0.3.1 - LG KS20 support (hopefully)!

There are probably similar apps around, but I got bored and made my own!
Currently, there are no options. It's on, or it's off!
Download the cab from here, install it, and then run "Haptic Feedback" from the programs menu.
By default, it installs a shortcut to launch at startup, but if you don't like that, delete "\Windows\Startup\HapticFeedback.Startup.lnk".
If Haptic Feedback is already running, starting the link again will cause it to exit.
Notes:
No external frameworks are required - pure C++
Supports MoDaCo AppToDate
Coming whenever I have enough time to implement it:
Settings - lots!
A settings application
Some features I haven't yet thought about... Suggestions anyone?
Support for keyboard response
I can't be held responsible for any damage or loss caused directly or indirectly via use of this program, etc etc...
Change Log:
0.3.1 LG KS20 Support!
The "CustomLED" option allows for different LEDs to be set as the vibrate (default is 1. KS20 users should set it to 3)
0.3 Sound playback!
VibrateEnabled - enable vibration (1 is yes, 0 is no)
SoundEnabled - enable sound (1 is yes, 0 is no)
Sound - the full path to the sound file (only used if SoundEnabled = 1)
0.2 Settings! Stored under HKCU\Software\l3v5y\Haptic Feedback
HoldVibrate - keep vibration on until the screen is no longer down
HighTime - the time (in milliseconds) the vibration should be sustained
LowTime - the time (in milliseconds) the vibration should be held low
PollingInterval - the time (in milliseconds) between polls of the mouse state
0.1 Initial release
No point in a screenshot, as there is no form!
DISTRIBUTION OF THIS IN ANY FORM MAY RESULT IN VIOLENT DEATH CAUSED BY nir36, OR MYSELF - DON'T DO IT!

I know Heptic feedback is primarily designed to be vibrate response function but my suggestion is, Allow user setting to select both when Heptic feedback or audible feedback on or off for example only if SIP keyboard is enabled or in a specific program.
I really don't like the screen tap sound when used in general for all screen taps under winmo general settings but I would like the ability to have screen taps sound or vibrate feedback or both when I use my keyboard. So the ability to assign sounds or vibration independently of each other would be nice.

As of yet, no. Currently, the vibration motor is being controlled in the same way as LEDs, so it's either on or off... I'll look into an alternate method though.

I think there is a way. Vibrations in Tweeter are very light, compared to the ones when there is a call or an alarm.
Excellent App, i will watch this development closely as its something id love. For the moment it feels like my Polaris is going to explode when i scroll Sometimes it also misses its "que"
But great work, very impressed.

Tweaks (i think)

Well i have the Telus version of the HTC Touch Diamond. And sadly enough it does not have a light sensor (for some stupid reason). So i was wondering if somone could make/find a tweak that could make it so when you aare in a call the screen would not become useless but you just have to put a bit more pressure than you would normally. Because my cheek always touched the end button and it pisses me off. So you would just have to push a little harder to press the end button.
Also i dont like how you cant use ringtones as SMS/TXT sounds. Well you can but it just plays till the ringtone is over. I was wondering if there is a way that you can make it so when you recieve an SMS/TXT than you all you have to do is either tap the screen wthout anything happening from pressing it(unless you press the message tab), or to touch the center button (cause its touch sensetive) also without anything happening.
anyone??

Pretty sure he wants to stop the ringtone manually. As opposed to letting it play a full song of 3mins.
Dude, use the MP3 trimmer and trim an MP3 down and set that as your SMS tone. Thus no more verses and choruses, only a portion of the song.
To stop the sms ringtone, you can press the call end button, but it switch you to the home page if your doing anything on the phone.
Yes Dickenz
Thats what i want but i used the trimmer but i always use the main chorus of a song
and thats to long eveytime i get a txt
So i can just press the end button?

Ring AND vibrate on the X1

Hi Guys
Another basic question here. I can see how I can set the phone to ring, how to set it to vibrate, and how to make it be totally silent. My question is, can you make the phone ring AND vibrate for an incoming call? When I select ring in the control panel, it makes the vibrate option vanish. Please tell me this is possible!
Regards,
Andrew
In Settings/Personal/Sounds & Notifications you hit the notifications tab at the bottom.
Under 'Event', choose "Phone: Incoming call"
Under 'Type', choose "Vibrate and ring" or "Vibrate then ring"
You can also do all this in Settings/Personal/Phone.. first tab..
I reccomend exploring your phone before asking something like this. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but you could have found this extreamly easily just by looking at all the options you can choose from in the settings window/list.
Thank you very much v1rone. Don't worry, no offense taken.
I have been looking for this feature for a while now and didn't post as a first resort. This phone is just so different from my last one (SE P990) that it's taking me a while to get to grips with it. I had seen that screen before, but for some reason, I didn't notice that middle drop down and saw vibrate as a tick box for all the other things in the top drop down so I assumed it wasn't possible for phone calls.
Anyway, it's all sorted now, thank you very much for your guidance.
BTW, when clicking on the "notifications" tab at the bottom, it takes ages for the tab to come up. This has only been since I upgraded to the new R2 firmware. On the older R1 firmware, it still took a while, but not nearly as long as it does now. Just thought I'd mention it.
Yeah, mine does the same thing when trying to get into that tab. Not sure what the deal is there.
I haven't flashed any of the new R2 roms yet. It's possible that the R2 versions have more files in the windows folder, causing this application to take longer when seeking out all the settings it needs to display it's window. Not sure..
I have absolutely zero evidence to backup this statement seeing that I haven't peeked into the updated rom files yet, but who knows
Sounds plausible
on another note, any way to make the X1i ring and vibrate in a sane manner . . . the vibration is sort of insane lol
anyone know of any app/program to control this?
thanks

[App Needed] Gesture Control

As seen on Sony Ericsson W380 Gesture control
"Another novel feature of the W380 is its gesture control. Switch this feature on and you will be able to silence incoming calls or snooze alarm clocks by simply passing the palm of your hand above the sensor"
Well maybe this is a long shot but anyone has any idea if a program like that exists on WinMo?
Well as far as I see Sony made this Feature with help of a proximity-sensor and the only Phone/PDA I know which has one is the TouchPro 2
But there are a lot of Apps which let you silence Calls (built-in in most htc devices) and let you snooze alarm clocks by shaking or turning the Phones, also they let you unlock your Device and soooo much more funny things =)
give it a shot

you can execute camera app with mortscript on the incoming call i think.
i think the i900 has proximity sensor......
sorry it doesnt.......
i8000 Omnia2 has it!
yup thats right..........
does it have it as a device you mean or does it work as an application?
...
think best/easiest way on HD wouldbe light sensor on top.
So on incoming call it should check if there is a short light-interruption.
Prob:
just works if phone shows face up on your desk
And won't work if room is dark (perhaps could work other way round - if it's too dark - check for short light notice, reflected by your hand from display)
otherwise is would be to hard and battery intensive cause you have to check both cameras (back and front) for changes.
