Look nice
Hopefully more HTC devices come with aluminium case!

i don't think the picture is big enough, any chance you could blow it up some more?
what is the screen size/processor on this thing?

Will the 600Mhz be enough for web browsing and general use? I prefer Legend from Desire cause the Design.

If only it had a Snapdragon. I really did the design!

I've been comparing the Legend and the Desire and notice the following:
-The price difference (according to Expansys) is very small. (4680 HKD versus 4980 HKD as of Feb22)
-The Desire has the CPU advantage (1Ghz vs 600Mhz)
-The Desire has the RAM advantage (576MB vs 384MB)
So, what would be the reason for me to choose the Legend over the Desire? I'm guessing the following would be the only legitimate reasons:
-If I preferred the smaller size of the Legend.
-If I really liked the aluminum unibody design of the Legend (which I do!)
Btw, does anybody know if the Legend's battery is removable? I ask because it seems to me that the unibody design means there's no battery back cover in the traditional sense...
Not trying to start a war between each device's supporters but I'm just a little perplexed by the pricing. If the price difference is that small, is there any reason to get the Legend over the Desire?
I like the design of the Legend, but 1Ghz and 576MB RAM sound way better than 600Mhz and 384MB RAM (especially if it's just 300HKD more)...

the battery is removable in the legend. it slides out instead of popping out of the bottom black plastic chin. the pop off cap also houses the antenna for the device.

I've been comparing it to its ancestor, the hero. Actually not much new; (compare yourself)

interesting how the sim card battery and sd card are inserted..

The aluminum does look nice, but from a practical perspective it isn't all what it claims to be. The aluminum body would scratch easily and if you accidentally drop it, a dent would be irreversible.

I thought I'd offer a different perspective on this. I also have an aluminum unibody macbook. One time, it fell off my window sill (about 4 feet) onto my hardwood floor. No dents or scratches.
Also, while it's possible to scratch the aluminum body, I wouldn't say it's easy to do so. It would be if it was polished aluminum; but the body of the Legend (and Macbook) appears to be brushed. You'd have to drag it over concrete or something to really scratch it up.
Just like the aluminum macbook against the polycarbonate macbook, I think the Legend is going to just feel more solid and sturdy in hand versus other devices...

yes I agree it's difficult to scratch a brushed aluminum body, though aluminum is a very soft kind of metal, I once just tipped my macbook and the sill of the screen hit the corner of my coffee table and it dented it.
While aluminum unibody does provide substantial torsional rigidity, but have you seen slow motion videos of iphone being dropped on solid floor, it bends, twist and flexes to shrug off the possible damage to internal components. I'd imaging a solid piece of unibody cellphone dropped on concrete it'd be most certainly damage the component cus it is too rigid.

HTC Legend is seriously a hell of a legend. It's so beautifully crafted, but a little sad on the inside. However, upgrading from a Magic user to a Legend user couldn't be bad eh. Simply love the legenddddddd!!!!

I think you'll find this benchmark relevant, for the fact that it shows what gpu the msm7227 used in the legend has. Found here
It has a AMD Z430!. Yes, the very same GPU that the snapdragon (so the N1 and Desire) does. This sheds a whole new light on the phone now, doesn't it?

@ the above why do you think they call it the legend??
Just like the Hero, it came with a new UI and more ram than the other first gen phones, it came to save the day.

So are you saying that this can be overclocked to 1 ghz and the phone will be stable or that it can game like the n1/desire?
Well I heard that this is supposed to be a budget phone so it will be good for the price. I heard it was $150 USD for a 2 year contract.

No, that isn't what he is saying. He said that it has the same dedicated GPU as the N1.
Meaning anything graphical will be offloaded to the same GPU that powers the N1. So speeds might not be up to par when it comes to things like load time, but graphics should be almost up to par.

No way. Thats what I heard to from this site. Its the new Evo in 2011
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/16/htc-evo-....../
LOL... this thread is pathetic... I'm 150% sure that HTC is not planning on using the Desire HD as a template for a phone that is coming out 9 months from now (if even). There is no such thing as a phone being a template for another... period.
WHAAAT lol? Havent you wondered about the Evo2?
These choices of HTC in terms of Sense and especially Gui/processor (not the Desire hardware for Gods sake) to me begin to paint a picture.
Um...guys...the Desire HD is the world version of the EVO with HTC's latest software builds onboard, so no it is not in any way shape or form a successor device it is a sibling of the EVO. This is well known and publicized.

I okaaaay! Template is wrong word.
Im interested in what kind of upgrades might be in store for an Evo2.... and these kind of improvements begin to help.
That ok?!
My guess would be a S/AMOLED, improved 4G radio, and of course better CPU/memory/ROM/cams.

I think it would probably be SLCD instead of AMOLED given what happened with the Incredible and Desire. Whatever it'll be, I'm looking forward to it.
Samsung has everyone locked out of super AMOLED screens for like 18 months or something so it won't be that.
I know this may be off topic a bit but I know my next phone will have to have a screen equal to or larger than the Evo.
Everytime I hold a different phone it's just sad. So hopefully the Evo 2 looks like an iPad with Android

That folds up in 4's to the size of the Evo. While its folded up it can be used for texting, phone calls, and things we already do. Unfold all sides and you have a tablet with android.. Oh and there is zero creases in the screen when unfolding/folding.
And I definitely agree, I want a phone of similar size now that Iv had the Evo.
The "EVO 2" will be nothing like what is currently available. I suspect that we'll see the "EVO 2" come with 768MB - 1GB of RAM, 4+ inch display, dual core processor with a crazy GPU, and hopefully (please), a higher resolution display to take advantage of the big screen.
HTC is big on constantly putting out gradual and incremental updates. The new Desires are a small bump up from the Evo in specs and probably by next year, the next Sprint phone along the lines of the Evo will probably be a small bump up from that. The nice thing is that every year, these little upgrades have added up to something worth buying to replace your current phone.
4.3 or 4.5" would be the limit of being portable. Look at the Dell Streak if you want a reality check. The screen resolution can go up and S-LCD will be the screen. Retina display or the likes will be the push. Aluminum bodies like the Desire HD seems likely. They will probably thin out the phone and push Dual Core processors. 32GB next year will be the standard with 64GB being the step up. Hopefully by then they will push the audio/video through micro-sd a little more to get that standard down. It's being worked on now.

+ isn't as buggy as the other crap on the market. They learn from their mistakes and fix them in future releases. unlike samsung, who just releases and ditches.
The next EVO is going to be a 5" tube with a speaker on top and the mic at the bottom. It won't have a battery but will use a fuel cell that you only have to refill once a month. To see the screen you unroll the tube to use the 7x5 display. It will have 4GB of ram and a 1TB mem card, not to mention a Core i9 CPU.
wow...hilarius man...yeah...uhh really funny (that was Brian from Family Guy sorry)
In the process they also obviously have to address the two major criticisms of the Evo: 1. Battery life and 2. Fps cap.

Backplates!!! UPDATE **1/14/2011** (Hardware development)

Attention all Vibrant owners who are sick and tired of the flimsy plasticity of their phone!
***UPDATE 1/12/2011***
We have taken your ideas into consideration and have decided that the following features WILL make it into the final model (these are subject to change)
-brushed aluminum build
-option for consumer to select soft touch accents, soft touch body or pure aluminum body
-ID/Personal engraving
-kickstand D)
-custom colors
The FOLLOWING features MAY make it into the final build but are not at this time top considerations
-external LED (for custom, bootleg flash and flashlight)
-custom prints (upon request)
Thanks for all your suggestions, keep talking! We're a week or two away from a prototype. Don't spring for those Vibrant 4gs just yet-- even though I know you're all chomping at the bit to get your hands on one ;]
A few colleagues and I are currently hard at work developing aluminum replacement backplates (not cases, backplates. The battery cover things. Like the two interchangeable ones that came with your vibrant out of the box) with a few designs featuring some soft-touch accents. No branding either. Sweet :]
They will be available for order as soon as they go into production. Details to follow.
The designs look pretty sexy. Stay tuned for production updates and pictures. If the project is dropped or something changes, you will know as soon as it happens.
PLEASE! I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR IDEAS/DISCUSSION ABOUT THIS POTENTIALLY IMMINENT PRODUCT. WOULD YOU GUYS BUY ONE? HOW MUCH WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO SPEND? COMMENT AWAY, BUT PLEASE, KEEP IT CLEAN, KEEP IT FLAMELESS.
Can't wait for this
Make them multi colored for sure you'll make a ton of money maybe some design on the back good work man can't wait to see them
My dream has been something made out of real carbon fiber for my phone. If you guys make a carbon fiber version, THAT would be sweet!
I'll be watching for this. Thank you!
EDIT: Gimme a starting price and we could work from there lol.
Awesome! i'll buy one! As far as any ideas.... How about making a backplate that supports an extended battery. Not like that other company (can't remember name) that makes one supporting an extended battery but it's huge. Make it different to where only the battery part sticks out, not the whole plate.

Honestly wish you luck.
My personal opinion is that the plastic covers had helped my phone from braking a couple of times.
Aluminum or any metal tends to not absorb but transfer impact to other components, when the plastic phone hits ground (it happens a lot to me) the plastic absorbs most of the impact. If i add metal there the metal with transfer the impact much more to the components of the phone. So with a metal case, I would have to add a rubber case to protect phone better.
Sometime we just think they do it just plastic because they are cheap, but that may not be the only reason......
That's my humble opinion..
I cant wait!

Would this not be better suited in the Accessories section instead of general?
Pretty sure you guys are already aware of this, but a full aluminum backplate could cause signal issues. You would have to design it so as to avoid these problems. Just want to make this known as Id hate for a great project to go away if something was overlooked.

Been looking into this issue, and it seems the only big gripe was with Macbook pro aluminum unibodies detracting from wi-fi signal reception. These problems were inconsistent at best, and were supposedly few and far between.
I know that wrapping a phone in aluminum foil will make for a no reception situation, though... will look into this further. Maybe will use some kind of brushed metal instead. Something a bit more benign. HTC G2, for example?

Soft touch rubber accents, such as those found on the HTC Desire or HTC Droid Eris seem to be a logical solution, and would absorb impact much better than plastic
Something like this, where the user could have their own QR (for a lost and found) would be amazing:
For a backplate... I honestly wouldn't spend more than $12-15....
but with a custom QR code, $20ish.

The g2 backplate certainly adds a large amount of weight to the phone. You should try carbon fiber or a carbon fiber synthetic. I would most def buy that.

Do you have any ETA on when you possibly would start rolling this out? Or a planned release period? If not, no issue, thought i'd ask to make sure i have funds ready for when these are released. This should make the phone feel and look 100% better and fill like a better built product.
I would pay about 15 for an aluminum black soft touch backplate
this sounds really cool but im wondering will this affect the antenna in any way?
I would like the extra added weight. I figure a few dollars us is reasonable maybe 5 to 7 dollars? maybe im over doing it?
Carbon Fiber w/kickstand attached: $20 sounds pretty reasonable for it.
It'll be one of your best sellers, guaranteed.

The only thing I can imagine is that you must have dropped it on a pillow. The forum is full of posts on shattered Aria digitizer screens from drops of as little as 18". I have 2 Aria's, one working and a second for backup, and the backup is waiting now for another digitizer to arrive.
Other than that and no Flash, it's a great phone.

I've dropped mine several times on hard surfaces including asphault and the only damage it has is a little nick in the corner of the back cover. I've even dropped it in water, fully emersed and it never even got wet inside except some moisture under the screen that dried up. This little guy is going on 9 months old now Ans never had a single issue. Its a sturdy and very reliable little phone IMO.

I've dropped my aria while it was on my lap in the truck and when I opened the door to get out it flew off my lap as I stood up and skidded face down across the road. Not even a scratch thanks to the gel HTC case I have for it

It just works well
Coming from a HTC Fuze, I'm glad I did not give up on HTC. The Aria makes up for all of the glitches and freezes I experienced with the Fuze. My Aria simply works reliably, quickly, and without hassle - except for random bluetooth connection issues which may or may not be due to my Motorola earset.
My only beef with it is that the compactness comes at the price of text entry speed. It's still leaps better than T9, but well short of what's possible with a physical keypad, and a notch or two off of even the iPhone. But if I send 5 texts a day, that's heavy use for me, so this is hardly worth my worry.
No trouble after dropping it face down onto concrete with a vinyl/gel cover on it.
Considering it's a $0.01 upgrade (+ AT&T $18 fee) under contract extension at Amazon.com right now, more bang for the buck is hard to find.
This phone is great! only complaint is the size and no physical keyboard >.<
even so its better than the tilt2 i came from
I like the aria. It's fast, compact, and looks pretty.
I chose the aria because of its smaller size. I was coming from a motorola pebble so I didn't want anything gigantic. It even sports the same soft back as the pebble which is comforting.
There are, however, some things that I do not like about the phone. I don't like the antenna being built into the back cover; I feel that over time the contacts might wear out. Additionally, the back cover itself is annoying... It isn't as securely attached as I'd like; the glass around the top of the phone tends to lift up about 1mm from its protective back cover - something I noticed a few days after purchasing the phone. And lastly, I'm regretting buying a phone this small; I'm 6' so my hands are fairly large, it's a little hard to hold a phone this size without dropping it. An evo 4G would fit much better in my hand.
Having said that, I believe without a doubt that the screen will crack if you drop it onto contrete from waste high without a case for it. I have never dropped my phone though...
But I did go through a car accident with it (no case). When everything was all said and done I found my little aria under the brake peddle.. It was in my cup holder before. Not a single scratch on the screen - no idea how that happened.

My first phone to welcome me to the Android world and I said it did a great job, i also got a lot of help from the community here though >.<
I love my aria, only problem is battery life, but I keep it on the charger most of the time so there are no worries. When I turn my data off, it can go 24 hours without a charge without a problem.
I love this phone. It was my first Android and considering I was coming from WM 6.5 it was a huge upgrade. While I like the large screens of other androids I felt they were too bulky and opted for this one. Other than a few shortcomings (slower processor, smaller screen, and no flash mainly) the phone is great.

THISSSS is why samsung uses "cheap feeling" plastic builds lol

so heres the story. it was on my kitchen table. my cat jumped up on the kitten table. the phone fell OFF the kitchen table. it landed on my wood flooring, and BAYYM. shattered like a christmas orniment. i can say the screen is fragile.. very different from my Galaxy S phones, which have been dropped numerous times, landed on concrete, and have dropped inside of a machine at work (lol). guess this is why samsung desides to make those "cheap feeling" light weight builds..
sigh. already ordered a replacement screen here ;The HTX One X

Not sure what your implying......you dropped the phone, got unlucky and the screen cracked. It's more the design of the one x than the materials. The screen is similar to the lumia where the edges are curved but exposed.
Samsung and one x both use polycarbonate. If you dropped it on the back, Im pretty sure neither would suffer any blows. One x just has a matte coating and is unibody.
And the one x weighs less than the Sgs3 I believe by a few grams nothing noticeable. So not sure how you can imply light materials.

off topic from the one X.
As much people think plastic is cheap, they use this type of plastic for a reason.
I really think Samsung knows what they are doing. Consumers don't know half of the reasons why parts are chosen. The material scientist make their chose for a reason. They do test like these.

lol......and then there's you who gets his posts cleaned by mods. Surely you must be doing something wrong.
Tell me, drop a phone and it's not probability and chance the screen will crack. Surely if we go by the OP's statement. HTC using the same polycarbonate material implies Samsung's are just as easily to crack their screen. Is it not? Why don't you use your brain for once, instead of going around calling me a troll when I've probably owned more Samsung phones then you, clearly been around the Samsung forums and development more than you and a member longer than you.
It's HTC's design, when I had a galaxy nexus it was the first thing I said in the One X vs. Galaxy Nexus thread. The screen design is similar to the Nokia Lumia, where the edges are curved but they are exposed, if it falls and hits the edge in any way, it has a higher probability of cracking.
It's purely design, not Samsung choosing to use Polycarbonate when HTC is using Polycarbonate on the One X also.
Think and read before you speak please. Learn to spell also.
First of all I'M GETTING THE GS3, but this thread is ridiculous. The materials on the two phones are the same. Both phones use polycarbonate ( The GS3 is shinny and the ONE X is matte ) and Gorilla Glass 2. You were unlucky and this could happen to any phone if it landed the wrong way. XDA is getting worse every day! It seems like many iFans decided to try Android cause this brand loyalty in these forums is getting ridiculous! Why people can't accept that someone might like a phone which is not the same as their choice. The ONE X is a great phone too. We should be happy that the best phones in the market right now are Android phones. I miss the days when XDA was all about development and community spirit!

Dont see a point in sexy but fragile phone since you must put it in a case thus giving up the sexyness anyway.
Bet its the curved glass that makes it break so easy..

There's a lot of people that usually complain about why stuff looks the way they do or why couldn't the engineers put this and this in there.
What the chart shows is an example of a test dozens of engineers put together. We usually use programs and run experiments in all kinds of conditions to determine which materials are the best to use at the right price and will last the longest, etc and etc.
Just know even though the SGS3 uses a plastic case, it doesn't mean they didn't go through multiple materials and a selection process to make the case that they did. Sometimes the materials are chosen because they are recyclable and bio degradable etc...
Sometimes people need to realize that what they want isn't what they really need or want that's all.

lol......and then there's you who gets his posts cleaned by mods.

Lmao.. i see you get ass hurt when someone posts about the htc one x.. your posts are useless... and stop crying..... will see you next time when someone tells something bad about your one x..till then keep whining..
thread closed. discussion of a damaged one x screen doesnt go in the sgs3 forum.
also if people continue to make any comparisons personal they are breaching the rules. infractions will follow. we have given plenty of warnings.

Drop / Shock Tests

Friends, Will be updating this thread with drop and shock tests of the HTC ONE.
Here is one of the good ones I found, and if you come across more, please do mention them and I will add them into the OP for sure
damn that bloody glued speaker cover
most stupid idea ever
at least provide a way to clip it back in!
the One X in this test would have only lost its screen...
but yea this video confirms the back cover + frame are unibody....
they dented together bent together and never seperated
Oh man, I can see that speaker grille getting super annoying in future carelessness. Not looking forward to that!

here we can see the unibody back + plastic frame, they sustained the damage together and only in the extreme point of impact do we see slight seperation
the ground it fell on is really rough
still the front glued covers are absurdly stupid!
MAD at Speaker Covers
My One X and Desire HD surived very simliar falls without ever a flying part, not even the Desire HD plastic patches did ever fly (they snap in and not glued)!
but when i saw Jonas phone i was really worried this would happen and yup it does!
stupid glues should be banned from phone assmebly!
Is there a blog that would do the drop tests in at least a little bit scientific way? Because you can drop a phone 10 times on its back and nothing will happen but you need just one drop on the face to shatter the screen...
Screen looked fine but the dents were pretty bad.
At least on first drop the screen never cracked like the iPhone.
Deffo getting a cover! lol
nothing wrong with breaking or dents the ground its falling on is really rough
the one and only problem is the flying speaker covers
ERE! One thing I can't get my head around is how Nokia managed to construct the Lumia 920 to somehow withstand being launched about 20 meters through the air without breaking (and yes I know it's more of a lump) but how has no other manufacturer managed to emulate such tank like design?? Surely it can't simply be packing I mean the weight difference between the 920 (185g) and the One (143g) is really not that great a difference.....it's about the same as one of those little boxes of raisins.....And I can't see that being a defining difference between being damaged from hip height to being damaged from a throw.....Anyone think of how/why this is?

Nothing that a drop of superglue won't fix, so it's bad but not critically bad I'd say.

I assume you're looking for how many times a phone will land on its face out of the number of times dropped? A scientific test would require repetition, which I don't think any blog has the resources to do. Plus, when it comes down to it, you can't control how you drop your phone. I think it's enough to know that a full-on frontal drop will result in a cracked screen.
Soooo my concern is this.
Do you think even if we don't drop, this adhesive can go off in time? I mean can it fall by itself in time?

the One X and Desire HD are tank like as well, in case of the One X there are no covers, its full unibody as well, screen protected by metal frame
Note to self: Do not drop it. EVER.
These pics and videos of the damaged One are breaking my heart

Oh yes no doubting that the DHD is a tank, mine has been more then abused and laughed it off for the most part....Though not sure if you've seen the dop test of the Lumia 920. The bloke hits it across a car-park (or something) with a bit of wood and it doesn't brake. Some of the hits the phone takes would literally obliterate most others and he has to throw it full pelt, screen first in to a concrete pillar to break the screen lol.. I've literally not seen anything like it from a phone before. I'd love to know how they managed to make it quite so strong.....
(here's the link to show you if you've not seen it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3c8il_Q6SU .....and no I'm not bigging up the 920, I know it's a good phone but it has far more flaws than the One.....I'm just referring to it in regards to its construction)
actually i'm really pissed
and if this speaker cover bull**** is not improved in later batches, i might reconsider...first time ever i see on an HTC
and i meant One X, One S, One V, 8x, Explorer, Sensation, Evo 3D, Sensation XL, Desire HD, Desire, Nexus One, HD2
non of them had easily flying covers!
these drop tests were quite brutal , usually no one drops them like this and on concrete thrice.. but i think the phone is quite good still in terms of what really happened to it..
my heart was pumping when the one was being dropped, such a gorgeous device!
I instantly remembered Lumia920 drop test. They were unable to shatter the screen like that. Lumia is using Gorilla2 as well. Why the big difference?

It wont be improved unless they got some amazing glue. An impact like that will cause it to bend and fly off. Waiting for later batches wont improve that.

I never understood that.
People buying a phone because its aluminium and its oh so pretty and not plastic, and then put it in a (plastic) case which makes the whole thing look like a toy in a condom so it wont dent.
