[FIXED] Broken Screen - Advice Needed (ID) - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Accessories

Hi,
I got my Kaiser Screen broken. The phone still functioning, even touch still working/responding. There're cracks & part of LCD darkened & I worry it might get worse by time/use.
Question:
HTC no longer sell devices in my country. What is the reasonable price + shipping? Any reputable seller that ships to my country & payment method?
Thanks for tips.
Edit:
Got the screen replaced & working perfectly!
Use the 4 screw method, without opening the base, took me 20 mins only
Thanks to Mike Channon, Erwinpiero & many others that fixed themselves & posted on this forum!

Well i'd say eBay is your best bet and I wouldn't pay more than £30 (450,000rupiah) delivered for one. Plenty of people selling them from China, just make sure it has a digitiser, and it's the right model. Oh and pay by something secure like Paypal so you have something to fall back on incase its a bad sale.

Thanks.
I think that's reasonable approach, but I'm looking if any member have dealt with particular dealer that delivers .. something that minimize the risk (at least, it's the right item and got delivered). Yes, we can fall back, but I don't think the process is easy, and especially Pay Pal in ID has no legal vehicle, the site refers to SG. That's the reason I try not going blindly if there're any referrals.
In any case, I'll look around, and update when the screen is fixed ..

Useful links
To anyone looking for info, here're good ones (apart from Mike Channon's site)
http://www.formymobile.co.uk/vodafone1615disassembly.php
(using this method, was what I did, and changed the screen in 20 mins)
And I learnt a lot from our own forum here:

Good luck to everyone.

I haven't replaced a screen on my xda stellar yet but i did have to replace one on my xda 2.
I purchased mine of ebay at a store. e-shop I believe it was called. I would recommend that you dismantle the phone first. There were 2 screens available for my xda 2 and the only way to see which one i needed was to see the connectors on the back of the screen. It may be the same case for the tytn 2.
Also make sure you are purchasing a screen with the digitiser attached. It is possible to replace the touchscreen part but believe me it's not worth the hassle.
Good luck

Thank you very much! Unlike TyTn / Dopod 838Pro, Kaiser screen is luckily pretty standard. The replacement was easy as I got the one complete set (screen & digitizer).
It's now fixed & working well.

That's great news!! I just came on to point you towards the service manual for disassembly (google htc kaiser service manual for anyone else who is interested).
I'm considering replacing the external housing of my stellar, it has seen better days! Having seen the procedure to take the pda apart i'm having second thoughts. Glad you found it easy to replace the screen it looks far worse than what i went through with my xda 2

DEAR
Please guide me to the "the 4 screw method, without opening the base" becuse i have a broken lcd and anew lcd from ebay (25$) and the tools, so everything is ready for action!!!
any instructions, photos, details, pic...etc. would be highly apreciated.
but I need an easy method to do that without dismantling the base and remove the "void" label.
Many thanks in advance

Fitting a Vario screen

Hi. My special needs son used a set of keys as a stylus and has made a couple of holes in the screen. I am in the UK and can buy a new screen for £65 on eBay but can find no instructions for fitting it. The firm will fit it for me but this cost an extra £25.
Anyone help me out please with some information?
Thanks,
Doug
Can get a replacement if I knew how to fit it! Anyone know please?

It's amazing what you can find if you use the SEARCH function instead of bumping your own post the same day....if you were that desperate for it try searching yourself next time?....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=43836
In fact, my friend, I used the search function before I did anything and it came up with about a thousand hits of which the first hundred were no good!
I am quite desperate for this information, hense the bump before it went off the page. Keep smiling.....
Doug
Learn to use the search engine? It came up straight away if you use the 'all words' function....and I attached the link for you but you obviously haven't realised as 'you are' desperate for the info not 'you were'...
Oh well. I'd just pay the £25....
Thanks for the link anyway. I have downloaded it but it looks so complicated, I will pay someone to do it anyway.
Sorry to be a bit sarky, the link was appreciated.

Another reason to get the screen vendor to fit the screen is that there are 2 possible screens for the wizard - unless you have opened the phone before purchase you will not know which, so if they post you 'a' wizard screen you may get the wrong one and I doubt they'll take it back. If you send them your device it's their problem if it's the wrong one, just watch they don't blame your board for being faulty and try and charge you anyway.
Some vendors sell magician screens saying they fit wizards and this is true in some cases but not all. The 'wrong' screen will display strange colours and look washed out or not display anything.
From experience, most ebay screen vendors etc don't actually know this.
For the total price ( £90) why not try HTCEuropes's service dept if you have a t-mobile vario? They don't touch o2 devices and may be slightly more than £90 but they will fit the correct screen and your warranty will not be invalidated.

Spares for the Athena, anywhere?

Can anyone lead me to where to find a spare enclosure (not an external case).
The one that holds the whole thing together. Ok I need some help here to find the right term
My Athena fallen and I now got a bent Athena. An art piece I'm sure, but rather have it back to its shape, you know?!
So does anyone know where to find spares?
why dont you take a picture so we could see what exactly you need
Will need to find a mirror as it is the only camera I have
Anyhow I just find what it is. Is the SHELL. The black aluminum shell.
Is anywhere to be found it as a spare?
Thank you

Thank you.
I ordered the spare casing. Will post how it goes....
Sorted!!
I have received the casing, followed instructions and I now have a bright new Athena
The only bad thing is that the camera button and the volume sliders are missing from the replacing casing. and the camera button is a nightmare to take it over from the old one.
If anyone needs assistance with replacing the casing, just PM and I'll do my best to help.
So which did you get in the end, the brando one?
I'm contemplating doing mine at some point, it's pretty scarred.
I did go for the brando and it took about a week to receive it in Scotland.
The instructions are quite easy to follow, but the tools are a must, specially the flat tool to push the parts open. I got mine here when I repaired my powerMAC a few weeks ago.
does someone know where to get a new digitizer? my one is broken (the LCD itself is still fine) and I ordered this one. But they refunded me my money and said they are out of stock
Any suggestions?
Try the brando website.
It looks like they have a lot of spare parts...
If you can't find it, try to contact them, I got a few parts not listed this way.
Good luck

You can try here
http://www.gpsmidlands.co.uk/index.php?category=Pda Digitisers
but this is £90 of her majesty money
the one in your ebay link for £19 is unbelievable, are they for real?
Regards
they said they are out of stock but they promised to contact me if they get some "digitizer-only"
currently they only have full LCD screens for £150
as far as I can see the dealer seems to be realiable...

Need UR Help & Reviews. Cracked Glass Screen Repair.... am i being ripped off?

Hello everyone
this is my maiden voyage into this forum having lurked for a while since i got my HD2...
Please stick with me,
I have uncovered some grossly outrageous prices from 2 of the leading hd2 repair teams on the internet in the U.K.......
read on .....
well,
The day i decide to step foot into primark, i drop my hd2 and it drops less than a meter from my hand and catches the corners and shatters the glass screen....
after a slightly delirious 20 minutes of laughing i tried to use my phone.
unbelievably it worked absolutely fine! albeit with cracked glass and fine shards of glass sticking into my fingers....
so i immediately set about trying to find out where i could get it fixed online.
The first stop was TurnOnYourMobile.co.uk who quoted me just over £200 to have the screen replaced. They offered a "We'll beat the Price of our competitors" thing, and so i looked elsewhere .
Hence, next stop, Undercutter.co.uk...
According to the very difficult to use website, it would cost me £85! bargain i thought...
so i went back to TOYM to see if they could do a price match?
the answer was no....
oddly, it seemed that Mark at TOYM used to do the repairs for Undercutter and believed that Simon at Undercutter was confusing the Touch HD with the HD2 and that his quote was incorrect.
Back to Undercutter and when i emailed directly to Simon i was quoted £115 plus £8.50! still less than TOYM but a little bit more than undercutters own website stated! not a good sign!
So i did my own survey of prices of the HTC HD2 screen Glass Screen Digitizer.....
to find that the screen alone ranges from £23.50:gultek.eu/htc-hd2-digitizer.html
to £44.95 mobilefun.co.uk/htc-hd2-replacement-lcd-p23948.htm
I emailed Simon at Undercutter about this!
The fact that the screens were available for Under £50 and yet he was charging nearly £70 on top of that to spend less than 20 minutes replacing the screen..... a Whopping rate of nearly £70 an hour for the repair....
Absolutely extortionate.....
after sending my findings to Simon he sent me an email back saying
"We are not going to justify our repair prices and service further, but if you would like to use our services, please let us know."
so my advice to anyone getting a screen repair is, unless you can afford the extortionate prices, see if you can get it repaired on your insurance, and if that takes too long, try and fix it yourself.....
After my findings, I am tempted to buy a screen and repair it myself.....
But i need your advice.... Is the anyone out there who can fix my phone for a lot cheaper and at a resonable rate???
and If i am to repair it myself, Any tips or instructions on hopw to do it???
Many MAny thanks to you
and thank you for reading.
Darren

i think its ok for ppl to ask that much money for it from what i have seen its verry difficult to do.
you have to think for yourself. if you do it yourself and you destroy your phone. what will it cost you? is that risk really worth saving a relative small amount of money?
in my opinion its not.
Hello
I had my screen replaced by HTC in the UK and they charged me £79 +VAT so I would say your being well ripped off mate.
Marshall1975, who did you get yours fixed by? and did they replace it with the glass screen as opposed to a platic alternative i've been hearing about? and was it just the glass that was replaced or the LCD digitizer too?
I have a feeling it's just my glass that needs replacing not the bit underneath it.
jamieeeee, I don't think it's reasonable for people to make that much money out of customers at all, just my view but to make such a big profit out of one customer is shocking.
The reason i've posted my findings is to highlight the nature of people preying on a niche market such as us. HD2 is still fairly uncommon and these companies are making a killing bacause we are a niche market... i think it's dispicable...
Marshall, I haven't got mine fixed yet;. i'm doing my research good and proper first before i go for it....
Thank you so much

that is just the plastic digitizer that reads your finger, not the glass.
also, the second link is for the lcd screen not necessarily the glass. (I think im correct in saying it is a three piecesetup, lcd - glass -digitize ((or lcd digitizer glass))
Thanks for the Info SamSamuel...
so can i assume then, that as it's just the glass that is broken that , that is all i need to replace?
My phone still works brilliantly and no touch problems at all other than tiny bits of glass...
does anyone know How crucial it is after a drop to replace the whole lot? as SamSamuel suggested, the 3 parts that make up the screen?
Simon from UnderCutter didn't appear to say that the screens i listed were incorrect? who knows. Does anyone here have more detailed information to what is on there on the market.
Surely these screens must be Official as they are HTC branded?
below another os Simons gems in repsonse to my findings of screens at a lower price.....
If you have the skills to replace the screen yourself then please have a go at buying and fitting. Some cheaper parts don’t work or last very long, so there are cheaper ones out there but don’t hold your breath for a great product.
Also Just wondered if anyone knew of the whereabouts of the video tutorial on how to replace the screen???
and £79 wow, i can't beat that, Where did you get it done Marshall?

the videos are here
but its verry hard to seperate those 2 things..
hmmmm taking the whole of the screen looks fairly simple in the video! but i'm sure there has to be more to it because of all the separate components that make up the screen....
still wiatin got hear from Marshall1975 to see where he got his done.....
Have you contacted your network to see how much they can do the repair for?

I believe he stated in his post it was directly with HTC in the UK.
Why not plump for HTC. Save the hassle of DIY and its cheaper than the other quotes you have?
When its all fixed, work out how much insurance would cost per year balanced against dropping it, smashing it and repeating the whole process again......
Aha
must've not seen that through my cracked screen!
I have contacted HTC to eagerly await their response which i will post here!

[Q] Replacing the Surround's Screen?

I managed to scratch my HTC Surround's screen when I dropped it the other day. It's a fairly large scratch and it's bothering me enough that I'm looking to get it fixed. I've seen some auctions on eBay for the HTC Surround's digitizer but have no idea how I would go about removing the screen to replace the digitizer. ifixit's guide doesn't seem to show how either. Am I better off just seeing if HTC can repair it? How much do you think it'd cost?
I owned a Tilt for a very long time, so long, that I replaced almost every part of the phone. This was a difficult and time consuming process. I would definitely find out what it would cost to have it done professionally and compare that to what the digitizer plus tools to disassemble your phone would cost. Not to mention any warranty you might no longer have, labor, possible damage...etc.
As far as I'm concerned, having a legit reason to take apart my phone is right up my alley, so it's all up to you. Either way, let us know how it works out and I wish you the best of luck.
PS, pics will be awesome if you do!
HTC gave me an estimate of about $120. However, the person on the line said it may end up being more and if I decide to not go through with the repairs, it'll be $39 to get it back. So I did some Googling and found Mission:Repair. Apparently they offer Glass/Digitizer screen repair for just $99. They have some good reviews on Yelp but it's mostly for iPhone's, iPods, and MacBooks. I think I'll give them a shot and post a review on them later.
That sounds decent and worth not having the hassle. Definitely keep us updated and I wish you luck!
How much was the digitizer + Shipping and whatnot

Now this video would be a high five if it showed how to get to the screen but it does nothing but give you a video representation of the ifixit.com's walk through that only goes that far.
I myself bought the new digitizer and it came with the tools and all....I couldn't figure out how to get to the screen. I ripped the thing into pieces but couldn't get the screen section to budge.
Edit:
I wound up taking it to a local shop. I could barely tell what they were doing. I couldn't see how they got the two halves apart but the screen itself is well glued into place. The final review by the guy was "it was a pain in the ass". :/
I did it
I did it and i uploaded a home-made video. Look at the Surround General Forum.

[TIP]Digitiser replacement tip

My HD2 touchscreen started to be erratic. One day working and the next day dead. So I thought..."nothing to loose"...and ordered a replacement touchscreen and digitiser. Three things I learnt I should tell others:
1. The task of disassembling the device without harm to it and your ego is not for the faint-hearted. I bricked my phone by prising open an incorrect layer which opened the display unit!
2. I find out also, at that point, that the replacement part I had bought had a bigger ribbon connector than the phone, despite the vendor specifying the models covered.
3. Overall, it is something I would recommend, as I have had to replace my HD2 with a Titan X310e!
