No Corporate Discount for rate plans with N1?? - Nexus One General

First let me say sorry if this was posted before, I searched and found nothing on it.
I just got off the phone with a T-mobile Rep and, he explained to me, that If i sign up for a new contract when purchasing the Nexus I will not be eligable for my 15% corporate discount on rate plane.
Has anyone successfully used their discount on a rate plan using the N1? I find it hard to believe that Google cares that much about me getting a 15% discount.

I couldn't even get my corporate discount on the regular non-contract plans. I decided to downgrade my minutes, and I have to pay full price for the 500 min, unlimited data and text plan, which is $60.
Their reasoning was that "it's already discounted," whatever that means.

Oh, I just wanted to add that you can just buy the "unlocked" phone for full price and use your existing plan. That might save you in the long run, depending on how much you pay at the moment.

Yea I am currently on the Even More Plus (no Contract) and was willing to sign the two-years to get the nexus subsidized, then use my discount to get the 1000 min + Text + Web for 75 with insurance but I was told Google will not allow Discounted rate plans with the N1...

The lack of corporate discount has nothing to do with the N1 and everything to do with the Everything More + plans. EM+ plans are not eligible for corporate discount to the base plans, though the add-ons may be discounted and activation fees may be waived depending on the corp discount. This is true regardless of the phone you use.
If you are on a regular EM plan (or an older eligible plan) you can still have your corporate discount with that plan and the N1.

The way I know it as a T-Mobile rep is that if you are on EvenMore, you get get the discount (lets say it was 15%) plus the waived act fees. If you are on Even More Plus, you still get the waived act fee but you dont get the monthly discount because its already cheaper than the Contracted one with your discount on that. I understand were everyone comes from cause the discount should be applied the any rate plan but, I don't think T-Mo would be getting enough money to expand the network like we want and bring in the devices that we want if they did do that especially because they give discounts to so many different organization (business, AAA, alumni, students, faculty, gov, churchs, etc). But just to lay it out so every one understands let take EvenMoreTTW Unlimited and EvenMorePlusTTW Unlimited. EM would be $85 after discount and EM+ is still 80. Usually if you get a great discount on your phone and monthly, EM would come out better (just realize that the phone discount would only be for the new act and not upgrades later) but if its just that plan you get a discount on EM+ is the way to go for the long run.

Since my significant other is on a discounted plan with an N1 I am not sure as to the validity of the argument. I personally am on the loyalty plan and do not see a point in changing. Did you call business suppport? if you just dialed 611 I would not be surprised with that answer, look at the extremely inconsistent answers on everything else (plans, insurance, support...) coming out of the CSRs.
Since you already have the phone, and I assume you got it subsidized at the new contract rate ($179), your options may be more limited. If however you are on a corporate plan and bought it at existing customer subsidy (now $279 if memory serves) or unsubsidized you most certainly can have a corporate discount.

Ok this may sound weird but I got the phone on contract by adding a line to my account like I stated. I just decided (after ordering the phone) that I dont wanna be on a contract and i just want to buy the phone outright.
Can I just cancel the added line with T-Mobile and pay the Recovery Fee or 350.00 to google or do I have to return the phone then let them refund my account then order it again unsubsidized.
I guess my real question is How do i go about getting google to charge me the ERF so I dont have to ship and wait for a refund just to order it again?

When I went in and got my SIM card, I got my discount. Activation fee waived, and 15% off my plan (everything more plus or w/e...the $60 one)

Also just as a referce for everyone, so if you have a corp discount you can apply, just go into any store after do the EM plan buying a N1 and then the will still add it. I have gotten no word from T-Mobile that we aren't allowed to add the discount to the plan. Its pretty much the phone is just sold through google, once your plan is set up and everything yo can do whatever as far as adding discount or changing plan. Honestly on our side you wouldn't see anything. You just can't switch to EM+ cause that would cause a ETF. As far as the loyalty plan, that 50 for unlimited minutes and 35 more if you add texting and data, so you would save $5 a month and make up the migration fee of $35 over time but just up to you if a contract is a problem or not thats all. I probably would stay contracted if you like Tmo on the single line loyalty it doesn't get too much better.

Even More Plus plans were never eligible for corporate discounts, but Even More plans are. I have a discount on mine. However, T-mobile dropped the discount... so when I switched to buy the subsidized phone, my discount went from 15% to 6%. Sucks, but better than nothing.

DynaBass139: Sort of off topic but I would not switch to EM+ because I would lose number portability. I am not under any contract obligation at this point so ran the numbers and debated the subject a great deal. Granted I am unlikely to change carriers but I have had the same phone number for close to a decade now. If I decide/need to switch carriers I want to keep it.. The deal is good enough, though I wish T-Mo would drop the web to $30 to put it on parity with EM+ for cost.
(I have historically not subsidized my phones because T-Mo has not had the phones I have wanted. I have gone through a long list of HTC phones starting at the Blue Angel in 2004 I think, down to the N1 I bought on release day. If a N2 comes out on T-Mo with a keyboard I might try and subsidize that though. 2 $500+ phones in a year would be a bit too much.)

I was just gonna say I went in the day after I got mine and received the Fedex corporate discount no prob. Too late.

Ok i am just going to stay on my EM+ without the discount but I made the mistake of choosing the subsidy by opening a new line.
anyone know if I can just cancel that new line that I opened and just pay the other 350.00 off. i know google has the equipment recovery fee so how does that get charged?

I only paid 179.99 but that's because i opened a new line of service and got a new number. Be aware that if you open a new line of service to get the 179.99 price you CANNOT cancel your other line of service early or you will have to pay a 200.00 fee for early termination. The only option you have is to switch it to a home phone plan. If you decide to go that route as I did then it is 10.00 a month. It uses your sim card and a router that you get from T Mobile for 40.00. You must have a high speed connection to use this option.

Edit: Just saw your post in the other thread. I think what you're saying confirms what the T-mo rep told me earlier today. She said that if I switched from my old grandfathered plan to the Even More 500 plan, then I'd be eligible for the $179 price. Not that I'm going to do it... it's cheaper for me to stick to my current plan and buying the phone unlocked.

Someone in another forum had the same issue and apparently he had to add another line. Once his N1 comes in he plans on canceling his old line and switching his number over to the new line. I can try to find that post if need be.?

That's not necessary, but thanks. I'd only buy the phone unlocked, because it will considerably cheaper than switching plans and being in a contract again. I'm really just curious because it doesn't seem right that if we're off contract with T-mo, we couldn't take advantage of the subsidized price of the phone. Theoretically we're paying higher plan prices every month because our original phones were subsidized. So if we're off contract, then we should have paid T-mo back for that subsidy and they should either discount our monthly rate (like the Even More Plus plans), or subsidize a new phone for us.

Sorry, people on here seem to like 'hard evidence' that is only text from another person. I am sure that this has been the plan since the beginning. Google, obviously having the upper hand and being in control, is calling the shots on how this works. T-Mobile, being an underdog, was probably given first dibs with this being part of the deal. But, I do agree with you. I bought it unlocked and would have rather saved the money and updated my phone with current plan. The guys post was something about he had a "grandfathered" in plan and was eligible through TMO for the update but with it being through Google he wasn't able to.... I guess all we can say is 'okay' and mush on.
I would have bought the unlocked version as well but I'm already paying the same amount as the plan that is required so took the discount and ran. I'm sure eventually there will be more plans available. Google is sure to take a lot of heat for it and will eventually crack...well I hope anyways lol.

For people interested in the tmo family plans, here is some math.
Getting 2 subsidized phones over a two-year period breaks down to an extra $15 a month ([$180 x2]/24). 2 unlocked phones is $44 a month ([$530 x2]/24).
Looking at text and web family plans with no annual contracts, its $109.99 for 750mins, $119.99 for 1500mins and $139.99 for unlimited. This gives you freedom of picking your plans or switching to another carrier that supports this phone.
Knowing that if you get the subsidized version, you will be paying $160 a month plus the breakdown of $15 a month (spreading out what you pay up front for the devices) it comes to $175 a month.
With the unlocked device price breakdown at $44 a month, you can see you will save money if you buy the unlocked phone and use either the 750min or 1500min family plans as they will cost you $154 and $164 respectively.
This is a two year savings of $504 and $264!

I love the first post that clearly states "only new T-mobile customers are eligible to purchase Nexus One at the discounted price of $179." If thats true then why did I get one for 179.99, I've been with them for 7 years! lol

I have a family plan with 4 lines so I had to break down and pay full price.... same when the G1 came out. Only reason is because i feel like this phone I will keep for some time. I hope. Google, I think, will be getting a lot of heat about this. I took a look at the link and there are A LOT of pissed off people on there. But GOOG does have the money to blow.

I actually bought the unlocked phone for $530,-. I have another 6 months on my contract.
But this way, I'll be contract free, and am actually SAVING money now, because I had a G1 with Myfav600, which was $80,- a month.
And I never even come close to using my 600 minutes.
So the 500 plus plan is perfect for me. And I save $20,- a month.
And , when they get the Voip thing happening, I can use that as well, since I have a Google Voice number.
i'm a current T-mob customer with 9 mo left on my 2 yr contract i got with my G1, once i get some extra cash saved up i plan to pay the full price for the nexus one because for me at least i currently spend $53 a month on my service with t-mob and don't care or benefit to change it and if i could extend my contract and pay less for the phone by some amount it will still save me more in the long run by not having to pay for the dumb 80 dollar a month plan they force you to have by going that route
this is of course as long as they do not change their tune on how they are handling this before i'm ready to purchase the phone i.e. give me a discount of some amount to upgrade and keep my current plan or one very close to it

I've posted this in a couple other threads but it should help here.
I'll tell everyone up front I worked for T-Mobile customer care for the last 4 years up until this past June and was a supervisor for the last year of my time there.
If you currently have a single line plan that is out of contract is qualifies through T-Mobile for the full discount but Google is giving you the price that is almost $400 here is what you can do it get around it. And change to the Even More plans prior WILL NOT fix this issue.
Alot of people are getting bad information from TMobile about what needs to be done because the reps were given almost no information about the ordering process. So most reps and just going with the flow to try and get people off the phone.
When you go to order the phone with Google select the option to add a new line to your account. It will give you the 179.99 price for adding the new line. Once the new phone comes in the mail call T-Mobile and cancel your old line and ask them to put a "request old number back" request to replace the new number with your old one. This takes about 24 hours to go through. During that 24 hours your old number will not work because you have to cancel it before you do this.
I know for a fact this will work but the rep you talk to may give you crap about doing this and not let you because they want to be a ****. If you're worried about that call and cancel you old line when you get the phone then call back and talk to another rep and tell them to put in the request for you.
Don't you have to pay the 200 dollar ETF if you cancel a line?
There's no ETF if the line has no contract. So if you add a new line to get the discount you can cancel the old one without a fee
Ah I missed that part. I am trying to get the 180 price and I only have a few months left on my contract and they won't upgrade it. They will let me add a new line of service though.

No Loopsholes for Purchasing

I just switched to EM+ Family plan and recently came off of EM. I still have until September for my contract that I extended when I got the G1 back in Thanksgiving of 08.
I figured that I'd go to EM+ and use the "Subsidizing" ability to cover the $530 cost. This will not work for the unseen future due to some "duh" moments.
EM+ works this way: If T-Mobile is selling the phone on their site, you can use EM+ to purchase it and subsidize it over a maximum of 20 months. They charge you separate from your bill, and you can choose how much to pay additional each month for the phone. (Not sure if there is a minimum payment per month. I'm guessing you have to at LEAST pay 1/20th of the phone's cost).
This won't work with the N1 because Google has exclusive selling rights for the phone.
So, like a moron, I finally came to the conclusion that there are only two ways to buy the phone, and they are the ways Google has already plain-as-day outlined.
Until there is a new game in town and Google relinquishes their exclusivity and T-Mobile picks up the Nexus One of their own accord, my only option is to buy the phone outright because the EM+ plan is not compatible with the purchasing options on the Nexus One. This is because the nature of EM+ does not make the "extension" option a viable choice due to the non-contractual nature of EM+.
It is also the highest plan possible, and - aside from the $35 fee - possibly the best plan T-Mobile offers because it's packages are cheaper than EM. However, once on it, there is no backing out.
Start saving those pennies, XDA family.

All we can do is either pay the $530, or $180 if your line is eligible for an upgrade (contract or upgrading to EM in the first place).
TMo always lets you upgrade to EM+ if your line isn't on it, but the $35 upgrade fee applies, and you are still obligated to the contract time you signed up for before switching to EM+. IE, I still have till the end of September for the extension I signed up for at the End of November 2008 when I got my G1, even though my account will switch to EM+ on the 8th of January.
Of course, we could always do the $180 and pay the $350 cancellation fee, but that costs a total of $530 -_-

You can do that. He's talking about upgrading and getting the 180 price instead of the full 530 price.
I have tried to talk Tmobile in waiving the ETF on one of my lines if I buy the N1 and add an aditional line but they won't do that either. Its either 530 or nothing for me. (don't want to pay 110+ dollars a month for two lines)

I bought my Nexus One for $530 then just went over to T-mobile and changed my G1 plan to an Even More Plus 1000 minute unlimited text/web $69.99 a month. Unlocked phone and no contract, can't beat that. I think they charged me $35 to change plans but I still think that is great deal. Oh, and all the T-mobile employees in the store were going nuts loving my phone since they had never seen it before.

Best price & plan discounts for evo?

Eventhough I'm not currently in a 4G market, the EVO has me excited however I'd like to get the best deal possible particularly as I'd be using it perhaps 80+% on Wi-Fi off their network.
1) Full retail price: $450 or $600 as I'm not sure I want to sign a 2 yr contract? If I do sign a 2yr contract is the ETF a monthly prorated $200 & would that have any effect on my credit rating-report?
2) Discounts: I've heard suggestions of setting up a simple $10 savings account at a Credit Union to get a 10% Sprint discount, any comments/other discount ideas to minimize that monthly fee?
3) Rooting: Just to clarify does rooting void the warranty & if so do you have any qualms doing it day1?

She said its the same plan either way and I would have to have a 2 yr contract even if i didn't buy the phone from them. So no discount and still have to have 2 yr contract. Can anyone confirm this info?

Discounts: Sprint offers discounts to pretty much every company out there. Heck, some companies only require you know someone who works there to get the discount!
If you are out of contract, you can often call Customer Service and get an additional discount just for resigning, and then still upgrade (and thus resign) a few days later. But it has to be done in that order!
However, these discounts do NOT apply to the $10 Premium Data, $29.99 Wi-Fi Hotspot, or $7 TEP. Only to the actual plan!
Contract: If you are a NEW customer, you MUST agree to a 2 year contract, even if you don't take the discount. So take the discount.
If you are an existing customer and want the discounted price ($199 after $100 MIR) you MUST sign a 2 year contract AND be eligible for upgrade.
If you are an existing customer and got an Evo from a friend or I/O Attendee, you do NOT have to sign a contract. You can change the plan, add the services, add TEP, and add the Hotspot without changing your contract. You'll even be eligible to upgrade on your regular date!
Where did you get the $600 price? I thought the phone was $450 without a discount and $199 with a rebate/discount for an upgrade/new contract.
The reason I ask is I am only 8 months into my contract, so am I going to have to pay $450 or $600?
Also, a friend said he had a Bowing Credit Union account, got him a 20% discount.
$450 is the official price from a Sprint corporate store, $600 is the BestBuy full retail price.

Ok so since I'm new to Sprint it sounds like I would have to sign a 2 yr contract for access to their network & should take their discounted price-Is it a monthly prorated $200 ETF (& would that have any effect on my credit rating-report)?

If you pay the $200 ETF then it won't go against your credit, but if you don't pay it (just like any other bill) they could take you to collections and then it will hurt your credit. Keep in mind in order to get the rebate you will still need to keep the phone on sprint for X period of time or they'll deny the rebate.
Also, I don't believe the amount is prorated monthly at all. You are agreeing to 2 years and thus get a discount on the phone.

The ETF is $200 until month 5, then goes down by $10 every month until only $50 remains. And no, if you pay the ETF and final bill (make sure you pay it ALL!) by the bill due date (like any bill) it doesn't affect your credit.

It's called an NVP discount, and there are (literally) hundreds. They range from 5% to 25% based on where you work. So go into a store and get it setup!

Define "deal". Sam's Club has the cheapest price ($160) last I checked, Radio Shack and Bestbuy both will do it out the door with no MIR and have cheaper accessories. But those same accessories void your mfg. warranty the second you plug them into your phone. Plus you're going to have to call customer service to get any discounts added to your plan.
Corporate stores will require the MIR (Extra hundred bucks up front), but will setup your discount johnny on the spot (should you qualify and I'll bet dollars to dimes you do!) and walk you through the entire setup up the phone (They call it "Ready Now")

Absolutely. If something in the phone fails or needs to be cleaned take it to a local Sprint Service center. They either repair or replace at no charge, and replacements are usually in your hands within 3-5 days (unlimited). If you bust the screen out, get water in it, loose it or get it stolen call Asurion and for $100 they send you another (up to 3 a year).

I thought you couldn't use a SERO plan with the EVO? (or any recent smarphone short of the TP2) Or is EPRP different from SERO and I'm just being thrown off by the fact that it says /sero on the URL in your post?
Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out... For anyone not familiar, SERO is an old/outdated set of discount plans Sprint used to offer (based on employee referral), EPRP is the current/modern iteration of that and apparently you can use the EVO on such a plan (and you can upgrade a SERO plan to EPRP too), but it's possible you may not be able to actually buy the EVO w/an EPRP plan until July (judging by what Sprint employees have stated elsewhere), due to the fact that you need to get the phone directly thru Sprint with the plan in order to be able to get on the EPRP and they're locking out the EVO from the EPRPs 'till then (like they did w/the Pre), so that's a bit of a letdown.
Am I right? Kind of a downer, I would've loved to save an extra $10 a month but I don't think I can wait 'till July! Thanks for the info anyway.

I'm currently on AT&T and I'm not even waiting 'till the 7th (Monday after the EVO launches), even tho supposedly they've got some big (non-Apple) announcements then. Just sick and tired of waiting for them to release a solid Android phone, the EVO is calling my name! 'Specially after I discovered I can get a 15% discount on my monthly bill thru StudentRate and still qualify for Premier status. That basically makes EPRP irrelevant for me since it's the same amount of discount but w/no caveats; and StudentRate's also got a sweet offer for those ordering the EVO online on the 4th, after 2 different credits you basically end up paying $125 for it w/no activation fees and free overnight shipping, tough to beat. I don't mind waiting 'till Monday if it means saving $110!

1. not sure about sprint premier with the 59.99 plan. previously, SERO plans got special treatment even though they didn't qualify for it by their cost structure (phone upgrade discounts, etc), it might be the same with EPRP, you'd have to call and ask
2. very difficult to more from a regular plan into an EPRP. If you want it, sign up with it
3. sprint distinguishes employees from regular users on a referral plan. my rep says I can get it friday. i'll post back friday.

The only way using a charger voids your warranty is if you tell them you used a non-OEM charger when making your claim And why would you do that? Not to mention that Radioshack, at least, can set up discounts right in the store. Radioshack will also walk you through using the device (if you've never owned a smartphone before and need it). We call it "customer service."

According to a lot of different posts on sprintusers.com, EPRP plans under the cost limit for Premier don't qualify for it, period. Corporate discounts and other stuff don't preclude you from Premier status but EPRP does (it's not treated as a discount but a separate set of plans, which it is pretty much since some of the minute allotments vary).
Anyway, I'm going ahead w/the 15% StudentRate discount plans, I can get the EVO thru them for $125 anyway... Seems a little more honest than getting in on the 25% Time Warner deal heh (since I AM a student). I'm just wondering if you can upgrade your plan at any time (say, to a Share Plan) when using these discounts.

AT&T Bargining

So I'm interested in the Motorola Atrix 4G from AT&T but their plans are expensive. I can get the almost the same plan from T-Mobile for $15 less a month though I don't like their Android phones.

Comes out to $75 a month, T-Mobile has basically the same plan here for only $60 a month. I already have my home phone and my TV through AT&T and have been a customer with them for almost 5 years. Would AT&T discount me at all for having, home, cell, and TV with them? Also would they compete with Costco for the price of the phone ($200 at AT&T, $120 at Costco).

i had an at&t store tell me the other day they wldnt sell a smartphone off contract it really varies from one person to the next at at&t u can ask one person and they will say no move over 2 feet to the next person and they say yes so good luck just ask more than one person at at&t likely to get a yes
Don't get your hopes up. It isn't likely. I am a 20+ year customer, and the person on the other end just humphs at that. No, they don't care about customer loyalty at all. I went for a captivate in nov and wanted to stick with my unlimited plan. No way, forced me to take the plan( without telling me). I backed out, gave them the phone back, and reverted to my old plan. They would not give me the old unlimited plan back, and at that time only thing they were doing was the 2gb max + $10 for the next gig for overage. I told them to forget it, I was gonna switch to a competitor and they said ok. I thought that was real crappy. My phone was hurting and I needed to move, so I went with the Atrix last week. I regret my decision already, and can't give them the phone back without a 35% restock fee, per the in store salesrep.
Plus keep in mind that they deny throttling service on non-Iphone "4g". Liars.
It varies on who you talk to IMHO. You might get lucky with a CS rep if you tell them you already have service with AT&T. Like I said YMMV. Good luck
Hello. I just felt the need to respond to this. I am a market manager for an authorized retailer of AT&T. I have five stores under my guidance. Yes, you can receive a discount because you have your home services with AT&T. To be quite honest though, it is not a steep discount, but it is a discount. If you combine the wireless and home services on the same bill, you will get a discount of $5 off each service. Also, depending on who you work for, you may be eligible for a discount as well off your rate plan, data plan and texting. For example...Bank of America employees receive 15% off of the primary line's rate plan, texting and data.
As for the cost of the phone, unfortunately no, the store you are dealing with will not match the $120 price for the Atrix. What I will caution you on is when dealing with purchasing a device outside of an AT&T store or the att.com site, you may (and I say may) end up with some weird things happening to your account. Also, be careful there is no fine print. For example...if you buy an AT&T phone on amazon.com and it is only an individual line...if you decide later you need a second line and try to do a family plan, well that doesn't fly with amazon.com. They will charge you an early termination fee because you got the phone at a much lower price through amazon.com then you would have at a store. Strange I know, but that's why I always give people this anology...would you go to a cell phone store to buy a car??? Then why go to somewhere that does not specialize in cellphones to buy one??? Just experience talking in this matter.
I will chime in on this post as well. The person you dealt with that took away your unlimited data was dead wrong. All the reps that work for me will tell you and have done it...if someone has unlimited data prior to the change last year and does an upgrade, there is the option to keep it. I take that as poor training from that reps manager. When we are going through our system to complete the upgrade, it will automatically try to change the unlimited $30 data to the 2gb $25 data. However, the rep has to hit "modify features" button and it gives them all the data plans. If the current plan has unlimited data, the unlimited data option appears. If the current plan does not have unlimited data, the option will not be present.
I'm glad to be a college student. My bill is like 83 dollars with tax and all now with the student discount they have. Its basically 15% off of the monthly bill.
it's really swell that the reps say no it would not happen with them, I appreciate that you feel that way, so did the people I dealt as they really tried to put the unlimited plan back. It wasn't them, it was corporate crap. None of them could get it to come back up as an "option" when returning the phone and asking to be put back just like i was before the transaction. I talked to two reps online and then one at the B&M store. They were all miffed also, but the fact of the matter is AT&T burned me, and 20+ years didn't mean sqwat. I have to stop now, or I'll start with them crippling capabilities on the phone, or throttling data when you exceed their threshold, or...

Verizon "Pay as you Go" data Plan for XOOM

Please I need some clarification on how the "Pay as you go" data plan works with Verizon for the XOOM. My only experience is with the iPad and AT&T, where it was very simply and user friendly, I just had to purchase the data from the iPad itself and pay with my Credit Card, no calls to customer service, and I can cancel it anytime from the iPad itself. Based on a quick conversation with a Verizon rep, with Verizon it's much more complicated, I have to actually setup an account with Verizon, use the XOOM with the monthly contract data plan, and when I want to cancel it I have to call customer service and close the account, the same thing to activate the plan again, is that true that it's so complicated ?, I think the way how Apple implemented it with AT&T is very effective and simple, I don't know if with the iPad 2 Verizon will have a different option. Please could you add your comments based on your experience ?, thanks
its true and will apparently incur an activation fee each time service is restarted. Verizon really wants you to get a data plan and keep it :-(
Today I was ready to buy the Verizon XOOM, and use the data as "pay as you go", but after I understood the way how Verizon manages "pay as you go data", I will never invest on something that it will be so complicated and expensive to use. I'll have to wait for the Wifi only XOOM.
Supposedly you don't have to pay an activation fee of $35 bucks but rather you can suspend your account for $15. Still a major deal breaker but maybe when the iPad 2 is released they will change their policy.
Ya it really sucks. I purchased my Xoom and returned it after a week. Day after i returned it i got a Bill from VZN for almost 60 bucks for my "activation fee" + "1 month Data". I actually had to call up VZN and speak to a representative to "see what they could do". Fortunately i got an absolute sweetheart of a rep and was sure to be equally as sweet back. though i didnt get %100 credit. She was able to reduce my bill to $2.39 for the cost of my prorated data for 2 days. While most people would probably argue about that i said that was fine and will pay that bill when i get it.
Im not sure if they do the same thing with the Ipad 3G for ATT(even though i own one) but with the Xoom your data plan actually has a Phone number in addition to the ACCT number associated with it. So thats where all these stupid fees are coming from, they treat it like your actually opening up a new cellphone contract. IPad was 1(setup),2(pay),3(Surf)

The verizon rep i spoke to when I setup my month to month accounts that its simply$20 a month plus a little tax and the stupid 35 dollar activation fee. . . as long as you have them bill you for it - but without a contract.
If you want to pre-pay they charge you a $30 fee every month . . . thats right, if I want to be a thrifty consumer and pay as I go so I don't overspend, they charge a fee thats MORE than the cost of service.
Just to clarify, if you want to prepay as opposed to having them bill you (both options without a contract), they charge $50/month for 1GB.

Also note: the "suspension" option can be done online, I believe, without the $15 fee, but it can only be done twice a year for 90 days max each time. So, that's not an option unless you can plan your year pretty carefully.
I'm going to swap my 3G version out for the wifi-only version as soon as it's available. I was told when I purchased mine that data could be turned on and off as needed without any fees, and so I won't have any qualms about exercising the 90-day return policy at Costco.
It seems Verizon will enable "true pay as you go" capabilities for the iPad 2

Why not the XOOM ?
I've called customer service several times today. I bought my xoom on contract because I wanted to have 3g data but was specifically told I couldn't activate it whenever I wanted and I was just better off keeping the minimum $20/1gb plan. So I said if I'm going to have to pay that anyway, I might as well get it subsidized. In other words I was specifically told that vzw would not have that option. Of course, my two weeks are up today and they may change it!!
I would be very mad. I would have definitely bought my xoom without contract. I have called several times and I keep getting different answers. I'm going to go to the store tomorrow and find out. If anyone finds anything definitive, I'd love to see it. Thanks.

I activated my Xoom at the Verizon store on a month to month plan and it was $20/month/1GB and they did not charge me an activation fee.
I bought mine at costco.. the paperwork said 20 a month, activation fee with refund, unsubsidized.
I called VZW the next day and they had put me on a 2 yr contract that if I hadn't have called when I did would've been like 175 bucks ETF to get out of.
SO.. buyer beware, be sure to call vzw to ensure you are getting what you really wanted!
Be careful if your under contract my understanding was that if you suspend the data it also extends your contract until data is turned back on. This is why I just bit the bullet and bough the device. I know its not in everyones budget to do so, but it will save you money down the road.

This is what makes me mad. Given the choices at the time, I got the device subsidized since I was going to have to get a data plan anyway (if I wanted data some months and didn't want to pay an activation fee). Now, two weeks after my purchase, they change the rules!

ok. i went to the store. the first three sales people had no idea what i was talking about. I finally spoke to my manager. They are running a promotion of no activation fee starting today for any tablet (obviously if you buy at full price). I still do not have clarity on whether there's an activation fee each and every time you turn on your device's mobile data. I have read that ipad2 will not have to pay (ie using mobile data whenever you want and pay only the mobile broadband plan) and Xoom will have to pay (ie pay activation fee each and every time you activate).
my takeaways:
1. VZW sales people either just plain dumb or not trained well
2. Apple is pushing VZW around and VZW is pushing Moto around
3. Flash or no flash, this is definitely going to lead to fewer Xoom sales
The ONLY reason holding me back to buy a XOOM today, it's Verizon NOT having a TRUE "Pay as you go" data plan, like the iPad with AT&T and now the iPad 2 with AT&T and Verizon. I think will buy an iPad 2 today.
