Autofocus doesnt work on Camera - HD2 General

hihi
me and my girtlfriend got the HD2 since one week. I installed alle patches and BSB Tweak on the Phones. Everything is ok on my phone. But the Camera of my girlfriend does not sharpen pictures over 10 cm and longer away from the Object. I dont know, if the camera works good before. She only tried after i patched and optimized the Phone. A Hardreset dont chance the probleme. Same problem as before.
I dont know if it is a hardware failure, or any problem in the Settings.
Hardreset with 1.43 German doensnt work. Should i send it to repair the phone back to the company i get it, or do u think it is possible to repair the Focus, who sharpened the pictures via newer ROM, who maybe released the next few days or weeks?
what do u think.
thx and sry for the bad english

Your english is fine mate
If you hadn't tried a hard reset then I'd suggest checking that auto focus was actually enabled, as you can disable it from the camera settings (open the camera, open the options screen, press the setup icon & then go to advanced).
Since a hard reset hasn't changed it, I'd have to say it's a hardware fault. It's good that you've got another one there to compare it to so you know it should work properly. Just a shame that this one sounds faulty.
Hope you get it sorted quick. Good luck

Have you read and done what it says in the manual, page 240 in the English edition?

the one and only option ist "Touch Focus" i see on advanced options.
Do u mean, a rom updated doenstn work, when 1.61 is official or a higher rom?
on my phone, i hear a voice on the lensse when it sharpened the picture, on my girlfriends phone there is no voice on the lense, only the white quad moves, but there is no noise from the lense.
mayebe it is possible to destroy the Focus, when i update the camera patch and do optimices with BSB Tweaks?

Ripperjack,
See this...
" ... • Press and hold the Virtual Camera button to set the focus and
take a photo.
• Press and hold the Virtual Camera button to set the focus and
start capturing a video. Press the button again to stop capturing.
To take a photo using Touch Focus
Touch Focus allows you to focus on a particular area of the screen by
touching it. Touch Focus is enabled by default and is available in the
Photo and Contacts Picture capture modes.
1. Set the capture mode to Photo or Contacts Picture mode.
2. Tap the area on the screen where you want to focus. The focus
indicator positions itself on the selected area.
Note If you tap outside the effective focus area, a white box appears to
indicate the area where you can use Touch Focus.
3. Press and hold the Virtual Camera button to set the focus and
take a photo. You can also directly press and hold the area you
selected (that is, the area enclosed within the focus indicator) to
focus on that area and take a photo.
To capture photos in Panorama mode
Press and hold the Virtual Camera button to set the focus and capture
the first photo. Press and hold the button again to focus and capture
each subsequent photo and complete the panorama....."

PS: I just checked on my device. If yo go into the camera app>settings>advanced, make sure Touch Focus on the first page is set to ON.

ok, thx. Try this all. But have no effect. Onlyo the Quad moves, but not sharpening the Picture.
A new ROM maybe cannot repair this?

Hi Ripperjack,
If I were you I would move to the official ROM 1.48. Then BEFORE loading any fixes or software on (1.48 has most of them in it anyway) I would test the camera and see if it works according to the handbook.
If it does not then you might want to consider sending the device back as faulty and getting a replacement.
Cheers
WB

have the original 1.48 ROM from HTC on my HD2. It was on my phone already, when i get it. Girlfriends phone also have 1.48. I wanna try to flash the 1.61 Custom on my phone, but when i do this, i loose my warranty?

otherwise, is there any Registry entry to activate/deactivate the Focus on Camera?

push maybe someone know it?

Removing G1 Shutter waiting time and various settings

Well, I noticed many people were unhappy with the shutter timing.
This is very annoying, but hey, I think it is neccesary.
I apologize if a thread like this has already been posted.
Anywhom, there is a simple application in the market that may help you with this issue.
How-To:
1.) Visit the Market, and search for the application (SnapPhoto).
-SnapPhoto will give you the option to change many interface settings with the Android Camera. ( Brightness, Effects, Shutter, etc... )
2.) After you find the application, you need to download it, obviously.
After the download, Run it, and Click your menu button, and choose (Settings)
3.) Ok, now, you should see a list of settings. I wont explain them too you, as they are blantly explained in the description.
-Such as brightness(I assume everyone will catch on to these automatically)
4.) Ok, after you have changed any settings you want, you can change your shutter by returning the the Main application (SnapPhoto), and press the Camera Side Button ( this is the camera button on the right side of your phone.
-You should see a message that says "Disabling Stability detect". This removes the shutter wait time. It can also effect your image quality if you are moving and such.(Which is the main purpose of have auto-focus and such components.)
PS: To re-enable Your auto-focus/shutter, simply go to the app, and press the camera button, and it should say "Detecting Stability", exit app, and go to the actual camera .
!Enjoy
I dunno, if I wanted to turn off the auto-focus, I'd just take photos with the track-ball and not the camera button.
The track-ball takes photos in about 1second (compared to the 3-5second autofocus). I believe it is the default no-focus quicksnap button. May not be as widely known as I thought.

Are you sure? i have done a great deal of phtographing on this device and never noticed that. i just tried it now and i was able to take a pic just as fast with the camera button as the trackball. Also, when i press the trackball, it does auto-focus, so im not sure why you would say it does not. If you swing the camera and do not let the lense itself focus on the new item, then yes, there is no delay because the camera thinks that you are still looking at the same point of focus. That is the only time mine does not focus. If you turn and wait even 1 sec, then take a pic, it will auto-focus. I promise!
(ok i was able to finally get your result, but only after i focused it 1st with the camera button, then i tapped the trackball and the shot was instant)
The difference that i have seen between the camera button and the trackball is that if you half-press the camera button, it will focus, but not take the picture. The trackball is a static switch and thus cannot do that. (also the camera button sucks. i bet most of the camera problem come from the need to press that button so far into the phone causing the device to move and cause blur and needs to refocus. also, i would not be suprised if some are unaware that this 1/2 press exists and think that the camera is just not working correctly.)
For really clean pics, i suggest finding you shot, then 1/2 press the camera button. Let it focus on the subject. Then find the most stable way to hold the phone and use the trackball to take the picture. (less pressure needed = less shake and better pics) Works great for me and as i mentioned above, you can get instant pics with this method, as long as the camera does not think that it has moved.

X1 Camera

I had a diamond before I got my Xperia, besides the little problems like the bluetooth turning off (fixed with good ol' mortscript) and stuff its awesome. All though the camera is realy bad, it gives a realy nice picture but the exposure time is way too long even with sport mode on. you've got to hold the thing perfectly straight for a second or two other wise its blur-city.
Is this just my X1 or are others having the same problem?
Can't say I use the camera much just would be nice to find some sort of reg key or something to make it a bit more functional.
Yes, the camera is virtually unusable as-is, because you have to keep it steady for ages.
And the problem is that if you give the phone to someone else to help you take a group picture, the long shutter time (which no one normally expects) means I have to go and explain to people to keep pressing for 2-3 seconds and not move at all.
It is stupid.
Yup, its a shame SE realy need to send out a few fixes for this phone, after all it is their flagship product at the moment, the O2 stores near me cant even get hold of them.
Bluetooth and Camera definatly need fixing
Unfortunately, since SE has decided not to use HTC to build their phones again, the Xperia X1's firmware is unlikely to be fixed ever again... sigh.
Eh, it doesn't matter if SE cooperates with HTC or not, they have their own WM department and a new firmware is already out according to this (czech) site:

One quick solution is going for infinity focus instead of auto-focus. Seems like the majority of the time is taken up by the focusing function.
the tw rom is newer in the rom thread.
as to the focus i tend to press it and leave it.
I'm trying to say that if you have focus set to auto (in the camera settings) it takes much longer to take a photo than when you have it set to infinity.

Not so easy to do this if you are at a party and want to take a group photo...
Maybe infinity focus is the answer...
btw do we know what the latest firmware is?
open the phone and press the enter button once, or press the ok/center dpad once to start the process of the picture being taken.
also use multi shot this allows you to take pictures after another and then later delete ones that you do not want.
the US x1 has a newer camera cab but it doesnt help the time it takes to take a pic
i use sport mode with focus set to infinity as default settings. this gives great results and no need to hold still that much as some were suggesing.
overall the camera is great and its clearly better than the T*Omnia 5MP camera.
lets hope the new camera application from the Asian rom improve things. is it avalable CABed someware?
Sport and infinate
Although the focus isnt as good as Macro or Auto it is an improvment for the capture speed.
Setting to Sport and Infinate works a hell of a lot better than what I was using. (Sport and Auto).
Cheers guys.

I thought this for ages, its not true it really just means it has a slower shutter speed (multi-frame shot) which is why most of your pictures that involve movement will come out blurry.
Also, here is a hint for taking pictures faster: The button has 2 pressure points, hold the button down to the first point to focus, do NOT let go--then push it down all the way to take the picture it should do it instantly
For me Sports + Infinite = instant picture.

You have to press the down arrow on the bottom right side of the screen when in settings this will bring a more detailed settings page and you can set the default settings in there and your camera will use them everytime
Good luck
I'm a Touch Pro user but we don't have the ability to do infinite zoom. It's probably a registry value we're missing. Would anyone mind sharing any registry strings that seem to discuss focus or zooming? It would likely be in HKLM/Software/HTC/Camera
Thanks

Saving a picture of the TV screen takes an eternity!?

Hey guys,
today i took a picture of my LCD-TV screen to show a scene out of a PS3 game to a friend. It took about 2 Minutes to save this picture and even then only half of it was saved? The upper half was normal but the lower half was grey. When i take a "normal" picture saving only takes 1 second...
I made pictures of the TV screen before with my old W960i and there has never been a problem.
Any ideas or could someone try this with his X1 and get back to me?
soft reset, try aggain?
Doesn´t change anything...
then u should try a hard reset. eitehr your software is totaly borked or u might have an issue with your hardware.
honestly ... it sounds more like a hardware issue but try the hard reset first. dont forget to abckup your data
But why does it work with "normal" pictures then? Have you tried it with your phone?
The image will be a too large file due to the lines in your TV. Try dropping the pixels count to 1 or 2mb.
Yes I already thought of that. It works perfectly when I am not too close to the screen. When I´m too close a lot of coloured stripes appear when the auto focus is working and you can see the pixels of the TV.
Even so, my W960i never had a problem with that. I will try dropping the pixels count when I´m at home.
But still...would be interessting if someone of you could try it!

good question!
try deactivating the "verify picture" inside the camera settings.
the Picture should be allready taken after the shutter sound and should just be written to the memory. so its maybe the "verify" function which borks it up and tries to repair it!?
up/downscaling teh qulity (fine, normal economy) could also help if its a problem with teh JPG compressor!?
just made screens of my LCD Monitor. no problems, even autofocus worx great and a distance of 5 cm
did screens of my Plasma at home a few days ago and here was also no problem.
Ok, I will try it! Thanks guys for your help!
Isnt the job of "verify picture" not just to show you the picture you just have taken?
actualy no idea
i just know that some digicam Firmwares have exactly this feature build in. Check if the taken image isnt corrupted and/or fix some colors
just checked it ... it realy only shows u the picture X-D
hey i just tried it (takin a pic of my laptop screen close up with marco mode on) and the pic took about a minute to save and when i checked it, only the top of the screen was saved and the rest of the image was greyed out....and i'm on the touch-it experience v3 rom
So, just disabled the "verify picture" option and it works perfect!

You mean automatic preview of the pic after taking the a shot??
can u please tell me where can i find that option?
where is this verify picture option?
Turn on the camera and press the "wrench" button down right, then press the "arrow down" button down right. Now you have a menu on the left side, select the "Picture&Video" button up left. It´s the third entry in the list.
It is not the same as the "automatic preview" mode!

Front camera

Hi all,
I have a small question: I have found that i totaly never use my front camera, (the rear one neither -lack of good quality- but thats another story ey) does anybody really use it. And if so, how?
To use front camera, go to
camera (by default back camera will get turned on ) > click anywhere on the screen (except on the button to shoot fotos ) > now you will see new icon on bottom left side of screen in portrait mode (above call button) click on that icon > it will expand camera menu > now go to 'menu' ( by clicking the 'gear' wheel icon in camera menu bar > this will open 6 menu window > here you can select resolution of your both cameras and adjust brightness, white balance etc. > in that click on 'camera' button ( bottom left icon ) > Viola....front cam on. ( its actually toggle switch between front and rear camera )
Hope this answers your query.
it's to make video calls usually with VoIP or 3g. But could also use it as a make-up mirror i suppose or to see if you have ketchup in your mustache as the case may be.
What a beautiful step by step guide to activate the front cam, though i did know how to get there. But thanks just the same. Its just that I havnt found any good use for it ( the ketchup in my beard is cleaned up now, txs) . As for video calls, does anybody use it. And if so, with what software ect...
I guess to use video calls you need to have 3G connection. No other software is needed. I'm not sure though......and for VoIP i have no idea
I was going to make a small app to quickly bring up the front cam to use as a mirror as that's probably the only use I can think for it.
I have taken a few photos with it though, it's not all that bad.
from the htc dialer or yota dialer.. bottom left button looks like a webcam.. thats video call
Does no one read? The question isn't how do you access the front camera, it's if anyone knows of any good use for it due to its quality and the presence of a better camera on the back.
Hiya,
Just a though, wouldn't this be great to use as a webcam in the application skype?
The main challenge would possibly be for the app to recognise the camera.
Iv'e tried this but to no avail.
Anyone had any luck with this?
I know I posted the question, thought a search would be preferred.

On skype website (more precisely on the helping forum) they explained that it was probably impossible to use the video calling on pda phone, because of some problems of data compression (the video is compressed before it is send, and pda processors aren't fast enough to do it), and they wouldn't change everything in their software, to make it compatible between PC and pda worlds.
For now at least...
Sorry about that, it would be a nice feature with our Hermes.

I have a similar problem....

i have also tried a video call.... image is black.
i'am on rom Dutty's 3.3 and i have also tried dutty's 2.4. same problem.
any suggestion to check if my front camera is broken ?

Blurry Photos

I've been using the camera a lot lately and have always had a problem with the picture quality, mainly indoor pics. I would hold the phone steady, press the shutter button down halfway, wait for it to focus, then take a picture, but it would still end up a little blurry. Anyone getting problems like this? If not, what settings are you using?
Also, my biggest gripe is the fact that camera settings can't be saved. I would set it up so a friend could take a picture of me, but they somehow always press that search button, which then erases all my camera settings when they go back to the camera app. Did anyone find a hack or some sort of method to keep the settings permanent?
The main reason I have to bring all this up was biggest after taking blurry pictures last night, my friend's just bust out their iphones and with one simple click, they took an almost instantaneous photo with no settings to mess with and no blur at all.
I would also like to add that one of my friends was trying to take photos with his lg quantum as well, and he has the same problem. Is this a problem with windows phone 7 in general?
you could check out shcamera. It's a sideloaded app that was developed for the hd2 crowd, so it doesn't use the camera button, it's all screen rouc, and it doesn't have all the various settings/adjustments, but it saves settings and works pretty good. Tap screen to focus, press onscreen shutter button to take picture.

Same here. I owned an HD7 that didn't have this blurry issue. It seems the Focus camera is super sensitive to movement.
Thanks, at least I know i'm not the only one with this problem. I try to turn on anti shake everytime i use the app, which actually helps a lot. The problem is when I give the phone to someone so they can take the picture. They somehow accidently press the search button and I have to play with the settings again. Kind of a bummer, but I'll try to get used to it.

You might consider having them take more than one picture. I've noticed that when I take another picture after the blurry one, the results tend to be more normal. Maybe have them take a preliminary picture and then a real one. This seems preferable to messing with settings all the time.
Nice. The new NoDo update made the anti-shake option on by default. That will help a lot!

in low light indoors you might want to try the setting photo quality on medium instead of the default hi setting.
