Ok this is not another i hate nexus s thread, but it's just my own opinion, on my only main issue, with the nexus s. I know to most of you, this will not be an issue, but for me the lack of a micro sd slot, put me off. I went into my local Carphonewarehouse and they had them in stock, i admired it and what a beauty it was, and ofcourse i new before going , it didn't have a micro sd slot, but the temptation was too much. I made the same mistake, when i bought my 16gig iPhone, and by the time, i had tom tom installed, which is over a gig, in size, fifa is also nearly a gig, and so are most of the racing games, i was fast running out of memory. By the time i had my music on the phone, it was already grasping, for space. I also like some android apps to download YouTube to watch later, and i also have a tendency of keeping my over 3000 plus family photos and video,s on the phone,so the 16gig, is just not enough, in the long run. I have an iPhone 4 32gig, and even then i still have to constantly uninstall and install apps mainly games, due to space, so for me this is the deal braker, and am struggling to understand why they left this out, because with the explosion of gaming due to come to android, the lack of expandable memory, will be a right pain, mark my words on this one.

You can't compare app sizes on iPhones and Androids. iPhone app sizes can range from 5megs all the way up to 2 f'ing gigs.
Android apps have a limit of 50megs.
I actually have an iPod Touch 2G, 8gigger, Mod Edit: Talk of Pirated Content, and I'm not even up to 4gigs of it filled. I did have an iPhone 3GS 16gig a year ago and had 4 GPS apps, and I only used up about 8gigs.
You have have some real issues or an app hoarder if your 32gig iPhone is running out of space. (Unless you use it for music too)
But since you're having space issues still with a 32gig why have an iPhone at all? It has no expandable memory either. Rather weird you're bashing on the Nexus S with no expandable memory, yet you have an iPhone 4 32gig with no expandable memory and also having space issues.
Also btw, on Android, you can upload all your pics to picasa, and they are all accessible from the Gallery app at any time.
EDIT: I think this complaint about no microSD card is the worse microSD card complaint I've ever heard... comparing it to iPhone apps.... sigh.
remember that the 1gig of space for apps is not the 15 gigs of space as an SD card, so Fifa may be extremely large but the initial app is installed on "phone memory" and the extra is downloaded to "sd card"
The lack of an external SD card is bothering me less and less the longer I have the device. App space is a non-issue IMHO as they just don't require much space. While it would be nice to carry my entire music collection around with me, I wouldn't be able to do it in an acceptable format anyway as I have something like 120GB in FLAC and ultimately, I don't generally need to have more than 20 or 30 albums at hand.
All of this will be moot once Google launches their music service. Haters like to point out that streaming isn't a solution due to 5GB data caps, but I stream Last.fm in high quality mode an average of 4 hours per day and have never hit my cap.

20-30 albums at hand ! I find even that too much. For me it would be 6-8 albums that I m currently listening to wanting to listen to. Thats more than enough for me for a month long period Then swap them
the missing microSD support does bother me quite a bit, as I'm a heavy user. (16 GB of MP3, 1.5GB of Apps, not counting my collection of 720 HD movies, now i can't have all of that after switching from SGS, due the space constrain)
but luckly having a true unlimited internet over 3G/HSUPA it's a little bit less of a worry, but i'd still prefer to have access to Removable storage.

I don't even use my iPod anymore. I only said that as an example, and I hate Apple and only have an iPod for testing and experience, not for personal use. For the Android, I've actually bought tons of apps. The refund period for the Android helps with making purchases too, too bad it's 15 minutes now though.

16GB limit is probably the most limiting factor of the NS. That and the lack of a notification LED too.
NAND is supposed to be "lightning" fast but my experience with copying files to and from the NS is that it is way slower than an SD card. I know there are some tweaks out there to speed it up but still.
I wonder if the internal access for the CPU and apps is as slow; if so what is the advantage of NAND over SD?

I see no big issue with the amount of memory and lack of expansion. Your looking at a very small group of people that need more memory build in. 16gb is plenty for the majority of users.

I'm thinking of buying LG Nexus 4 but before that i wanted to ask people whether they felt the need to have an extra card slot for the phone. Also how much out of 16 GB is available for personal use...any general comments about the phone itself would be helpful...

I think about 13 was available? A quick google might answer that question more precisely I'm not using the phone for music or lots of movies. I don't expect to run into difficulties in that area.

To be honest, 16GB is too much space for me. I have around 1.3 gigs of my dev stuff, some apps (NFS Most Wanted People complain all the time about how they need 32/64GB of storage but the only reason I can think of needing that much is for music and movies. You can stream those as well so it's not a big deal.

16GB is probably enough for most, but you can always get a wifi storage device if you need more.

First of all, I don't own nexus 4 but a galaxy s3 with expendable micro sd slot. But I do want to get nexus 4 as well!!
From my personal usage, 16gig is simply not enough. I play lots of heavy games most of them from gameloft, each will take >1gig space and I do shot pictures videos and have tons of other applications installed as well.
I put videos, pictures and musics on sd card but still, only 2.3gig left on internal storage.
I know maybe vanilla android will be smaller than touchwiz but considering >10gig video and pictures that I have, 16gig just won't be enough .
Of course, you may not be like me and can use cloud storage. In the end, it's how you use your phone for the most, and regardless nexus 4 or other phones, it will be the same.

I've not installed any games yet, but I imagine once I do, the space will begin to go quickly. Music I'm less worried about, I stream mainly from YouTube etc. Video recording will be interesting though.
I would have preferred an SD card option, just because it's a fallback. An SD model would have probably convinced me to go for an 8GB N4, but no SD meant I had to go for the 16GB one.
The lack of OTG on this phone is a worry, but at the end of the day, considering the relative ubiquity of WiFi/3G internet in most developed countries, I don't think it's a big problem for streaming video, music etc, so really it's just games and what not that might be the struggle. I'm thinking of setting up a dropbox, (First time for me) which would be good for videos, and music and what not. I'm just not convinced of the price thats all. 2GB isn't very much, and as I have a pretty unlimited web server I could take advantage of that.

I m coming from SGS3 16Gb+32Gb mem card.
And I had to adjust. I have some music (had to choose what I m not listening to too often, haha).
About 1.5 Gb of nandroid+5/600 mb of rom and flashable stuff.
I ve had to stop walking around with whole seasons of TV, that s for sure But it's doable.
In the end, no matter how much space you do have, it ll get filled up with things that you don't actually need, so that s OK to pick and chose I ve got to say that I m not having any issue thinking about apps or not, I just get all in there and it fits!
So that s my experience, all in all, you have to think how to adjust, cause you ll have to do so.
Also, cloud storage? I ve got 1.8 Gb of data/month on my plan so yeah, that won't work. Since it s not when I m near Wi-Fi that I need to be mobile !
I wanna say that before I had the Nexus 4 I was thinking that 8GB is more than enough! And in my country there is only the 16GB version but boy I am glad that this was the case! On 16GB you have 12.92GB (don't ask me why theres 3GB less I don't know how system can take more than 1GB) and on 8GB you have only 5.67GB!
Now i have like 2,5GB free space left on my 16GB version! It is okay I wouldn't mind having more space though I didn't have any problems yet. But I noticed some games are very big if you are a games 16GB might be too small (I'm no gamer though most of my space is taken by music).

It has been a compromise for me. I'm also a musician and like to carry my entire music collection with me. I wasn't a fan of using the cloud because when I'm underground in the subway and I want to hear a song and if it's not cached I'm screwed. It has taken a bit of adjustment. I have a 32GB GS3 with a 64GB card and between music, videos, movies, pictures I filled more than half of the 64gb card.
I also don't have as many apps installed on my N4. I've definitely had to scale things down a bit. Although, I am having an easier time dealing with it then I thought I would.
I have 8gb and what I miss from my s2 (16gb + 32gb sdcard) is all the backups, roms I had.. Besides that, everything is fine
I bought the 16 GB version and haven't needed one yet. I ended up buying a 32GB Nexus 7 which is mainly used for heavy games like Vice City and NFS, leaving me with quite a bit of storage left on my Nexus 4. I stream all my music from Google play since I have unlimited data and Wi-Fi is pretty much everywhere I go.

Any comments on the performance compared to S3? physically as well? I know that adreno 320 is much better than the mali 400 but by how much?

use google music. even when i used sd i couldnt put my collection on it, i had to cut it in half. with gm i have my entire collection with me whereever i go. i live in two countries with long travels in between without connection - its as easy as tapping on the stuff i wanna listen to while being offline. you can make it even easier if you use playlists. i wasnt sure about cloud either but the way i see it, it works pretty well. i'd even say better than cutting my collection in half to fit 32gb.

I've been using GM. The only thing that sucks is sometimes I will be underground in the subway and feel like hearing a song out of the blue. If it's not a song that is cached then I'm out of luck.

Yeah I did. But I don't know if I'd want to carry it around with me. For that I could just carry my GS3 with me
I really was turned off by the lack of storage on the N4(I wasn't going to get one for that only reason) but I'm making due. If anything it keeps me on top of keeping my phone tidy and organized because instead of just leaving everything on the SD card I now clean it out every couple days to remove stuff taking up space. And instead of having like 50 games installed I only have the ones I'm currently playing installed
isn't there a way to unscrew the thing and replace the inner one? I think there's an inner sd card which can be replaced...I mean, my friend has htc mozart and it also doesn't have a proper slot for external card however if one unscrew the back, there's a card deep inside which can be replaced with a bigger one...Isn't it the same with Nexus 4?
For me 16 GB is plenty of space, the only thing I miss the SD slot for is easy transfer of files. I don't have to plug the phone in to transfer files.
I haven't tried the NFC / BT or WIFI (can;t use in corporate network) for file transfers.
Other than that I have been very happy with this phone, no root, stock ui, I am loving it.

I have my nexus 7 for the movies and honestly I don't understand people watching movies on a tiny screen.
I also don't understand people who "knows" more than 2500 songs.
And the ones who can play 5 different game loft games on a daily basis.
So 12 isn't enough for obsessive compulsive people who has to have everything with them.
I bet they carry a huge bag stuffed with stuff as well. In case they suddenly happen to go on a holiday or something.

2) the main camera is only 5M and is not good enough
Both these weakness maybe fixed by hack in hardware?
1) Is it possible add an additional microSD slot in the PCB , not an USB-microSD reader.
2) Is it possible replace the main camera sensor with a better one?
While I would concede that anything is possible given enough time/money/expertise, my guess would be unless you are a hardware/firmware/software god, the answer would be "no" to both.
Thing is that
1. Not needed
2. You look ridiculous taking pictures with a tablet, it's an unneeded feature
3. Too much effort for no real benefit

I took apart my broken Nexus 7 (2013) wifi. The camera module is under the motherboard. After removing all the screws and stuff, the camera is the one thing that hangs - holding down the motherboard. It is a small square module that fits in a square hole in the frame. There is 2 sided adhesive on the camera module face which holds the camera in the hole. You have to carefully pry out the camera if you disassemble the tablet. I mention it because there was nothing in the how-to video I watched.
It should be possible to insert a replacement. However, I am unsure how the camera software works. There might be firmware or other settings in the OS configured to one specific camera module.

they are not weaknesses. We all knew there would be no SD slot, and we all knew the resolution of the camera.
IMO, two weaknesses are, and this does not make the device any less great, are the lack of flash and the multi colored led. No, i dont take pics with my tablet, but i do scan documents and checks. The colored led would also be nice to have, but is not a deal breaker. I still love this tablet and it is the best device i have ever owned.
The lack of a MIcroSD slot doesn't bother me, because I stream all my content locally through FTP. I have the 32GB model, so if I'm travelling somewhere, 32GB is way more than enough.
And, as z0phi3l said, you look absolutely ridiculous taking pictures with a tablet.

My wife and I recently did a trip through Mt Rushmore, Devil's Tower, and other spots in S Dakota, Wyoming, & Montana. I was amazed at the number of people I saw taking pics/videos with full-size 10" tablets - bizarre looking to say the least. Weirdest though was the guy holding up his iPhone camera to a binoculars eyepiece, filming a video, all the while adding audio commentary at the same time. Something made me wish for a buffalo stampede right then ...
In lieu of a microSD, if I want more storage I use an OTG cable, thumb drive(s), and Nexus Media Importer.
I agree, the camera on this device is pathetic. It should definitely be improved. You could take an okay shot in really good lighting but that's about it. In most cases it's so bad that it's not worth it.

I don't feel the lack of SD card is a flaw in the device because keep in mind what you're paying.
I believe Nexus devices emphasize the use of cloud services of that's why they don't come with SD card slots.

The fact that a lot of people *here* are saying they don't need something doesn't actually negate the fact that the device would be more useful with a better camera. And there's a bit of a chicken and egg thing going on. The N7 is quite compact and having a better camera might actually encourage people to take pix with it.
That being said - the sad reality is that ALL tablet cameras suck as do most cellphone cameras. Nonetheless, clearly - a LOT of people do use the camera since Google was compelled to add it back in after removing is in the Nexus 7 2012.
As for the missing SD.. if it's cost, then why do other Android tablets much cheaper than the Nexus 7 have SD slots?

They also say that having the SD card causes the experience to be confusing since users have two devices instead of one - and that apps don't seamlessly use both.
The former is just lame. The reality is that they want you storing things on their servers and not on your tablet. Not everyone wants to put their stuff on the cloud. "But you already do..." Yes, for small stuff. But my music collection isn't going up there - that would not only be expensive - but considering my cell data plan has a cap (and one of the biggest caps available here), playing music through my cell connection would cost a fortune. Movies would be way worse.
Blaming programmers for not providing a more seamless experience with an external card is passing the buck. It's Google's fault for not building that into the OS. Expecting the developers to do this ensures a horribly inconsistent experience. Since the underlying OS is Linux, there are mechanisms there to merge two mount points into one. That being said - I've never had a significant problem with having an external card., but again, treating the internal storage as a fake SD card is the real source of confusion. When you insert a new SD card - you get the internal one showing up as 'sdcard' and the new one as a different name. Just calling the internal storage "Internal" and the external "External" would fix most of that.
I do think it is possible replace some components in the tablet, because some components share the same hardware/software interface.
For example, image sensor may use a CSI interface. And most embedded processor should have a SD/MMC interface integrated.
If google add a microSD slot to the nexus 7(16GB version) , no one will buy a 32G version for additional $40.

I have the 32 gig model and I still have 9 gig left. I have tons of huge games and huge ones like mw4, mw3 etc.. I have about 20 videos, 15 email accounts and ton's of data. If and when I fill I will use Google drive. So need for the extra cost of an SD slot.
I have taken 2 or 3 pictures just to test the cam, I use my phone or my digital camera for serious photos. I would be happy of they removed the cameras all together or maybe just left the front cam for voice chat.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the latest models of Android AIO's?
Personally I'm falling in love with the ideer of having a huge android on the angled table in front of me.
Many of them also doubles as an external touch screen for a pc with easy switching between function modes.
The one I look to buy is an acer DA223hql from amazon.de.
It's a bit pricey, and only has one gig of ram, but the size seems good for my reach and I like the 1080p resolution.
No argument that higher resolution is better like the acer TA272HUL's 2K or Lenovo ThinkVision 28's 4K, but those are both out of my price range and to big for for comfortable use.
The DA223hql seems to be the best compromise so far.
In my searches I stumbled upon a maintenance manual on Lenovos website which shows how to disassemble and replace the ram and hard drive on the Lenovo N308, and the components look like regular pc parts which makes me druel of the thought of a cheap Tegra 4 device backed by 4 gigs of ram and 1 - 1.5 TB of built in storage.
But the N308 is a 1600x900 TN panel with IR dual touch, and rumor has it that third party file explorers can't access the hard drive.
So I'm not sure i could live with those limitations.
I've not yet been able to find any reviews on the DA223hql and it seems to only be on sale in Germany so far, but several times my fingers have clicked the "add to cart" button.
I've just not been able to click "proceed to checkout" yet.
Please, someone give me some insight into these AIO's.
I trust android to be right for me in this category.
I trust that 18-22 inches is a good size if placed correctly.

The one I look to buy is an acer DA223hql from amazon.de.

In my searches I stumbled upon a maintenance manual on Lenovos website which shows how to disassemble and replace the ram and hard drive on the Lenovo N308, and the components look like regular pc parts which makes me druel of the thought of a cheap Tegra 4 device backed by 4 gigs of ram and 1 - 1.5 TB of built in storage.
But the N308 is a 1600x900 TN panel with IR dual touch, and rumor has it that third party file explorers can't access the hard drive.
So I'm not sure i could live with those limitations.
I've not yet been able to find any reviews on the DA223hql and it seems to only be on sale in Germany so far, but several times my fingers have clicked the "add to cart" button.
I've just not been able to click "proceed to checkout" yet.
Please, someone give me some insight into these AIO's.
I trust android to be right for me in this category.
I trust that 18-22 inches is a good size if placed correctly.

don't have much input, but they are tempting me too. I may be wrong but I think android is currently maxed out at 2gb of ram and cannot handle any more. If you get one lemme know what you think, I am hoping it would be better than a chromebook experience.

Just ordered an acer DA223hql
As far as I know android is based off of a 32 bit Linux system and is able to address up to 4gb ram.
probably 5.0 will be 64 bit which should allow ram in the terabyte range, not that I think anyone would need more than 2-3 gigs for a long time.
My Note 3 has 3 gigs, the LG G3 comes in a model with 2 gigs, and one with 3 gigs.
The Acer I've ordered has only one gig, which in my experience means I'll need to manage how much I'll have open at once.
A bit annoying but what's a guy to do.
With a little luck the ram will be replaceable.
Apart from that, the snapdragon 600 should be plenty fine for running a mostly stock android.
Unless of course the software is poorly optimized.
Not much hardware in the world can save you from poor software.
That's the scary part of being an early adopter.
At least it's not Acer's first attempt at this, so they have a little experience.

4 gb would make sense since it is just a 32 bit linux after all. Not sure where, but I read the 2gb thing somewhere previously. I had heard that most of those aios also used standard ddr3 so my guess is that it should not hurt to try. With the extra hdd thing, I'm sure the problem could be solved via software. Most apps on a stock kit kat build cannot write to the ext sdcard, might be the same problem you heard about regarding the added hdd.
Anyway lemme know when it comes in, if you have root and an unlocked bootloader I will most likely order one too.

It runs 4.2 JB so it can't be the kitkat thing.

And have been playing around with it for a few days.
Here's the quick and dirty of it.
First of all the screen, as nothing about it is as prevalent when dealing with a 22 inch tablet.
It's bright and with excellent viewing angles.
Resolution is a bit on the low side considering I watch it from about a foot and a half away.
The snapdragon 600 happily chugs along on a nearly vanilla built of Android.
There is a tiny bit of lag here and there, but I chug that up more to the single gig of ram.
An interesting little side note is that the screen Wakes up when touched, so no need to fumble the side for the on-off button.
The 16 gigs of built in storage fills up quickly so an SD card is definitely a must.
As the port is a full size SD you have the opportunity for cheap and really fast cards.
I have my eyes on a 128 gig, so I can get my 64 gig micro back in my phone.
Another way to do it is to mount a USB drive, but that option is better as a secondary.
It easily reads both exFat and ntfs, so no problems with my old 750 gig USB drive.
Another side note: a big USB drive will be good for videos.
Remember that I said that I sit close to the screen?
Well the negative side of that is that ANY lack of quality in my movies show up like sitting a few yards from a nuke.
I'll need to upgrade much of my media to 1080 versions with a good bit rate. Wich incidentally means I'll need more storage.
The problems of the developing world, right?
But playing a high quality movie right in my face is awesome though.
The speakers are OK, and more than enough at my distance.
For acting as a music system I have it connected to a Phillips Bluetooth speaker, which works fine.
The biggest problem with audio is watching movies with 5.1 on stereo speakers.
You turn up the audio to hear what they are saying, only to wake up the whole house as soon as any action starts.
Maybe someone can suggest a cheap and compact surround soundbar? I don't have room for a full speaker system.
Or would a small 5.1 amp with just the 3 front speakers connected be enough?
Mostly I just need the center channel so I can hear the dialog.
Unless it gets updated to "L" it's options for audio out is pretty much limited to a mini jack.
That's as much as I have time for now.
Later I hope to get into the issues of multi tasking like floating apps and the likes.
Bonus: towelroot worked flawlessly on this one. Full root privileges, but don't forget to install superuser yourself.

Ran it once.
It rebooted my system.
I installed supersu, and updated the binary.
And it was done.
Have not posted a link here before, so if there is any problems pm me and I'll mail you the link or file.
I'm not next to my acer right now, so if you need to know it's firmware version I'll have to check it later.
But start with the towelroot I used.

Often when they write the card size limit is to avoid customers calling them and asking the where to get a "1 terabyte card" that the written specs say would work.
But it is a micro SD-XC port and unless Acer screwed something up or set a deliberate limit, the SD-XC standard reaches all the way to 4 TB, though I doubt that we'd find such any time soon.

formatted with a Windows pc , no luck,
partioned at 64 GB, then formatted and it works...
May be it is my card....but is strange....

When I first bought a 64 card for my original Note I had to format it in the phone before it would read it.
But I also saw a guy Frankenstein'ing his Note 2 to run a 256 GB card, and that one is rated for 64 gig max...
Of course to connect a full sized SD to a phone you need a special adapter.

I tried from the Acer Da223hql at first but formatting was an endless process....it took about 20 minutes before I surrended...and switched to Win8 for the format operation. But then the card was not readable for the Acer....so I went for the partitioning.
I suspect that 64gb is the maximum allowed on this machine...

I also use this device as an external touchscreen monitor for a win8 laptop and it is great...
works without a glitch....
On the Android side I installed Floating apps and Floating Browser, so I take advantage of the large screen...

Dared to take it apart today (pretty scary), and it turned out that the ram is not replaceable.

Ah well, it was a good dream though, 4 gigs...
Have mounted a 3tb USB drive though, with no trouble what so ever.
And I connected my laptop to the hdmi for the first time.
It works but has some weird behavior.
The picture shrunken but the touch sensor works correctly, so the further from the center I touch the more offset it registres.
Both my acer and my laptop run at 1080p, and I set it to mirroring.
The laptop days it's sending 1080p at 60 hz and the Acer says the received signal is 1080/60 so I don't see the problem.
The Acers settings screen does have a section marked by a square with arrows going out. But it ain't selectable.
Haven't seen manual resizing since crt and analog monitors anyway.
Any ideas?

you are very brave trying to open it!
As far as I know these devices (based on Qualcomm Snapdragon) have integrated/soldered RAM, so I never thought to check it by myself.
By the way 1Gb is plenty in my opinion, then it depends what kind of application you have in mind (photo editing and such can be memory killer)
As external touch monitor it worked fine for me. I have a 2in1 Asus Transformer Book Win8 based and I use the extended desktop mode.
The Acer was immediately recognized as a monitor and touch input device. No issue with screen resolution and/or its alignement.
Would you like to try that setup and see if works well? If no may be is your Acer that does not work properly.
I did not touch any setting on the OSD menu.
Furthermore I installed Xposed frameworks+XHalo floating windows manager and now I have a Windows-like multitasking.....check it, it's worth the test. Several windows at the same time (Chrome, terminal emulator, Youtube) and no lag.....unbelivable.

I feel limits when moving my big files around in the background , and think more ram would have eliminated that.
But I'll live with it.
My laptop is an Asus u38n (the ultrabook with an AMD instead of Intel).
It connects fine to our TV without the weird scaling.
I guess I'll try sending Acer a mail and see if they have some advice.
I've only just started experimenting with the multi window funktions.
Juggling 50 hour work week with being a husband and father sometimes means that things move slower than I'd like.
But even without multi window I am pretty happy with it.
I knew from my wife's old gPad that the snapdragon 600 is no slouch.

I don't use Facebook much but love that concept.
Just haven't found a hangouts client that does it that elegant.

Concerning labour hours, my yesterday working day ended after 14 hours, so......I'm done! But we are lucky to have a job nowadays.
Back on topic I'm not a Facebook user, neither my wife, therefore the only app I can suggest, which can have similar functionality, is Lilypad Hd.

I needed to empty out my 64GB micro SD and chose to format it in my note 3 (running stock).
After formatting the acer told me that it was faulty and offered to format it.
I chose yes and like yours it just stood there for half an hour with no result.
So I put it in my laptop and formatted it from there ending up with the same "faulty" message.
So finally I put used my original gNote (running CM11) now there is no problems.

Hi in my experience Samsung Android devices have "bad" attitude in respect of vanilla Android.
They probably have some changes in the code which are not limited to the interface (TouchWiz), resulting in incompatibilities.
This is the Android fragmentation people often blame.
However when I formatted the SD card in my laptop, the Acer accepted it without assle.
I would try again formatting the SD with the PC and see if this happen again....sometimes magic happens

I've heard that Samsung have decided against this fantastic feature out the box, something that annoys me somewhat. They probably don't trust people will know what it is and will ruin their phones as a result or perhaps they're scared people will run a class 4 card and reduce the system to a crawl. Either way, it should be an option if you ask me, even if it doesn't happen by default and you have to go out of your way to enable. I'd like to encrypt my S7 Edge, but have a decent amount of storage at the same time. The idea of having my phone encrypted but someone simply being able to remove the SD card and view it's contents isn't appealing at all.
I'm wondering if Samsung don't end up offering it in a future update, if it's something that can be baked into a custom stock build. Root would be required of course, but that's something I intend to perform as soon as it becomes available, I don't care about the Knox flag. I'm in the UK for a start so Samsung Pay means jack to me. And I've only every had a single repair performed by Samsung, and they did it free of charge despite the knox flag being tripped.
If you're lucky, then it'll end up in the new labs features. I think Samsung should've made it a developer setting out of the box but oh well. I prefer portable storage anyway.

Completely agree!
That was one thing I was counting on! I mean come on they want us to be able to transfer data more effectively... They have created apps that allow us to do that via phone to phone through Samsung or with 3rd party apps.
Let us do what we want with our phone! I was banking on this feature. If they are afraid people with crappy microSD cards will complain about speeds make it a user agreement before formatting the card that they must accept.
Warning formatting this card and allowing adoptable storage may slow down the device and Samsung is not held liable. Agree and format or Cancel..... Problem solved.
The other thing that really killed me is no IR blaster... I found out after I preoreded. I just figured it would be there... I use that every day.... So now I am going to have to carry around my Samsung Note 10.1 2014 edition.... That I was going to give to my wife once I got the bigger phone.... LOL

I've found the next best thing... Have you looked into Harmony Hub? It is a little wifi device with an IR blaster that integrates into your TV environment. It works great for me, and I can use it no matter which phone I pick in the future since it is just an app at that point and doesn't need any special hardware other than wifi.

Does it run any app?
I LOVE anymote! I use it on all my tvs. I have macros set up for each tv to turn on tv, sat box, blu ray, ps4, audio amp.... or whatever I want to use or turn off with push of buttons.

No, you need to use the Harmony Remote App to control the TV with Harmony Hub. Its pretty robust and compatibility is top notch, it even will control Philips Hue lighting as well, but you definitely will be limited to just the Harmony app on your phone.

Does it have macro capability? That is huge for me. I mean Anymote is so robust and is constantly adding things to it. I hate to give it up. I really wish Samsung wouldn't have screwed up and would have spent the $2.00 it would have taken to put the ir blaster on it. If by macro you mean something like.... press one button to A) turn on television B) turn on DVD Player C) change to input 3
yes it does things like that.
can you root your phone and use Link2SD app?
I'm torn on it... what I don't understand is, why didn't they leave it to the user? could warn with a pop up pointing out the intended use and risk of data loss upon removal.
I actually don't know if it's something I'd use. I like to use my SD cards for data storage for things like pictures etc. now when my S7 comes in, i'll pop out my sd from my Note edge and put it in this one. there goes most of stuff moved over. you can't do this with the adoptable storage. I'd have to put all the pics onto my laptop, and move them back.
and yes... very sad with the IR blaster. not something I use often, but I love it when I do. it's sad to see it go. I liked using Peel because of the interactive tv guide which shows me what's playing, and I can just tune to that movie.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Samsung did this on purpose to see how many, if any would cry and be upset by removal of the IR Blaster. And develop the S8 according to the results.

You can encrypt the SD card so it will only work on the S7 (atleast I could on my S7 Edge). I hate the way the SD is used right now and I am with you on enabling Adoptable Storage in a dev option or lab setting somewhere.
You have to understand the MASSIVE performance penalty you get by writing on the SD card (SD card is maybe x10 slower than the internal storage). If you enable the adopted storage feature on the 2015 Moto X pure for instance, it will have unintended consequences, like inability to record video at 1080p, or a lot of UI lags and stutters and overall sh1t UI experience.
I personally do not think this is a smart feature, I do use my internal storage and SD card differently, I need to know where I am writing to.

That depends on the SD card. The only source I saw quoting that 10x performance penalty in connection with adoptable storage was referring to Class 2 or 4 cards which guarantee a minimum of 2MB/s or 4MB/s. Also, those classes refer to the minimum guaranteed write speed. Most cards write much faster in general, but they must be able to guarantee a minimum write speed sustained under all conditions and so their class speed is a conservative figure and isn't necessarily descriptive of their average performance.
The internal storage on the S7 Edge is around 280MB/s read and 99MB/s write. Many UHS-I cards are rated for 95/90MB/s(r/w) which is close on the writes, but still lags a bit on the reads. In my benchmarks I have a UHS-I U3 card rated at 95/90(r/w) that benches at 90/80(r/w) in a computer, but only 60/40(r/w) in the S7 Edge micro SD slot, so the SD slot may be the limiting factor here and the ratio might be more like 2.5x performance difference on writes. A few forum members have some UHS-II cards on order to test when they get the phones, but many sources are saying that the phones only support UHS-I which means the maximum performance on either reading or writing will be less than 100MB/s - possibly on par with the internal memory for writing, but still close to 3x slower on reads.

You own numbers show a x7 factor slower for the SD card.
When I test my Note 5 internal memory (still not have my S7 Edge yet) I have 340MB/s read and 150MB/s write. (8.5x factor)
I stand by my assessment, that even with the fastest micro SD card you can buy, there is MASSIVE speed difference between the 2 different storage type, creating some UI issues when the OS finds itself writing your launcher cache on the SD card...

Oh, I agree that there is a big jump in performance with the internal storage of these phones, but you don't need to fabricate numbers to prove this (or write in ALL CAPS).
Which numbers show a 7x factor? Or even an 8.5x factor? Are you comparing read speeds to write speeds?
280 vs 60 is less than 5x for read.
99 vs 40 is around 2.5x for writes.
340 vs 60 is under 6x.
150 vs 40 is under 4x.
Where is the 7x? Or the 8.5x?
Granted, 2.5x for writes and 5x for reads on my S7 are still a big step, but you don't need to bias the argument by looking for the biggest number in a page of orange numbers and comparing it to the smallest number in a page of apple numbers.
Also, which benchmark are you using? It's starting to look like the A1 SD benchmark is hitting RAM cache that biases the results (and it even warns about this when you run the benchmark.)
Switching to Androbench gets new numbers that are a bit closer to what is being reported for the Note 5:
Using 64MB test files:
S7 Edge internal: 426/128 sequential read/write
Samsung Pro+ microSD: 80/66 seq r/w
Bumping it to 512MB test files to make sure the measurements aren't dominated by RAM caches:
S7 Edge internal: 427/153 seq r/w
Samsung Pro+ microSD: 80/70 seq r/w
Compare that to 92/83 for the Pro+ on a laptop SD card reader.
So we sit around a little over 5x slower on reads and around 2x slower on writes for these UHS-I U3 cards spec'd at 95/90 read/write.
Already found a way to enable adoptable storage without root.
