[SOLVED] 1.48 & hsdpa - HD2 General

I flashed the 1.48 ROM yesterday, and have been mostly happy with it. It seems faster, and they've ironed out a couple of niggles, so it's an improvement in some ways, albeit not many.
I do have one MAJOR problem however. Ever since the upgrade, I can't get a HSDPA signal.
I just wondered if there's any problems with O2 (doubtful, since it's been since yesterday morning and I still can't get a signal), or if anyone else has found the same issue since the upgrade.
Thanks.
Edit:
It turns out that other guys here have been suffering with no O2 3G connection since yesterday, and I've flashed back to 1.43 and the problem still exists. I have to assume that it's O2 that's at fault here.
Edit:
I spoke to O2 the other day about this, and they did confirm that Salisbury had no 3G coverage at that time. I've come in to work this morning, and it's back to 4 bars. Now the iPhone guys can start to use my phone as a wifi router again lol.

I have a 3GB limit on data, so that's definitely not been exceeded.
Edit: I just checked - I've used just under 400MB.

I've got 1.48 Dutch rom and have good HSDPA signal everywhere.
Perhaps a network malfunction?

Yeah - thanks mate. I've already figured it must be that. There's a guy here who couldn't get 3G on O2 yesterday, same as me, but he said his was fine this morning, so I assumed it was my phone. Turns out he was wrong, and there's another guy who can't get 3G on O2 either.
Now I've just gotta flash 1.48 again and wait for O2 to sort out the problem.
Cheers.

Where do you get the v1.48 ROM for O2??
Wanna flash mine, but can't find the ROM for O2 HD2s.

Sorry mate, but I didn't get my phone from O2 - just the SIM. Do a search for goldcard. I think that should help you, but it's not something I'm "in the know" about.

Lucky me!! 2 for 1!!!!!

Well, after the dispair at losing my spv m600, my insurance company well and truly sorted me out! they couldn't get an m600 or similar, so the sent me a tytn! but what's more, while i was in the middle of setting it up, there was a knock at the door, and would you believe it, another one was handed over!! couldn't believe my luck!!!
anyway, enough of the showing off! I have a bit of a query. i live in a g3 area, but it doesn't seem to pick up the signal. is there something i need to set up, or should it just change according to the signal? i sometimes get the "U" icon appear, but no g3? this is the case on both devices. as a point, i was on the phone to orange and got all the gprs/g3 settings, so that's all sorted.
any suggestions?
I think some devices display 3G and some U (for UMTS) dependent upon the ROM. I'm using a Vario II with an HTC ROM and mine displays U when in areas of 3G coverage.
It means exactly the same thing, so I wouldn't worry either way.
daves correct, its down to the icon used in the firmware, I had Vodafones firmware initially which showed 3G, I now have HTC's which shows U.
cool! thanks alot for that guys!
i guess it being intermittent is down to the fact i live in the sticks and teetering on the edge of the catchment are!
ok guys. i'm in central london now which is g3 covered, but I get nothing. orange weren't keen on helping me out, this not being an orange device. can anyone help me out with the settings? thanks in advance!
Do you actually have a 3g-enabled SIM card, a so-called USIM?
Most networks require such new SIM cards, since other authentication and encryption methods are used on UMTS networks.
Even if you have a USIM, make sure it's an actual one, because the first generation of USIMs is buggy.
By the way 3G stands for "third generation", which includes several radio standards (FOMA, UMTS, CDMA2000, CDMA2001, TD-CDMA / TD-SCDMA, UWC-136), that are incompatible among each other.
What we have in Europe is UMTS. Together with Japanese FOMA UMTS belongs to the WCDMA-family, but Japanese FOMA is about to be migrated to UMTS, too.
Regarding the erroneously sent second TyTN consider to return it - at least here in Germany upholding such an error by silence is still a criminal fraud.
lucky bastard! haha, same thing happened to me when I sent my xbox 360 out for replacement, I got 2 back!
anyways in the upgrading forum theres a cab that changes the U to 3G if u like it that way.

Did you change your SIM card when you got your HD?

Hi folks,
Thought I'd pass on some information I discovered recently which might be useful...
When I got my phone a month or so ago I swapped the SIM card out of my old Orange SPV straight into the HD because the new SIM supplied with the HD didn't work and obviously needed to be registered (which I couldn't be bothered with at the time - I just wanted to play!).
Last week I signed up for a data package with Orange - £5/month for 500MB which seemed very reasonable. I started using the service and have been fairly satisfied, but I noticed that I didn't seem to be getting any changes in data reception ie. GPRS, 3G, Edge, HSDA etc, even in built up areas (never saw an H, E or 3G in the display, just G). It always seemed to be on GPRS and the data transfers were pretty slugglish.
I had read somewhere on these forums about old SIM cards restricting data transfer rates so I called Orange and they agreed that data rates ARE impeded by using an old SIM.
They registered and sure enought I have been getting HSDA/3G in my area with an appreciable increase in data speed. Now I might be in the minority, but I wouldn't mind betting there's a few more out there with this problem and hadn't realised it...
Moral of the story... register and use the new SIM !
Well, that's kinda why they give you a new SIM with your new phone...
Out of interest, where did you upgrade?
Because most places should automatically switch you across to the new SIM.
either that or check if 3g/hsdpa is enabled

Agreed - have learnt a hell of a lot from this site...
I have had my current o2 PAYG simcard since October last year and have just bought a touch HD from Ebay. Do I need to change simcards or just swop it from my Nokia? (I won't be home in the UK for another couple of weeks as I'm currently working in Jordan, and yes the phone is unlocked to any network?

See that really surprises me.
I've upgraded through Carphone Warehouse before, on an Orange contract, both in-store and over the phone/online and when I've been issued a new SIM, it's always been automatically registered/activated.
I would've thought that if a third party can do that, then the network themselves should be able to as well.
Hi,
Before I got the Touch HD i had a Nokia N95 with an unlimited data plan. Well i upgraded & used the old sim, i get all the high speed data rates, H, G etc etc. So i guess if u have a sim that caters for 3g alrdy, even if its an old sim it wont make any differance.

Bad Reception on UK Vodafone

Hi all,
I'm on Vodafone in London, and i'm finding i'm getting really poor reception and dropped calls.
After trying out a few ROMS i settled on Energy 21903 build as i've found its the most reliable ROM. I've also tried Artemis and Energy 23569 builds but just found they weren't as stable and crashed at some point.
At the moment i've installed 2.07 Radio.
My problem is that it seems to take ages to detect a signal and sometimes it comes and goes. I also only get one days battery.
Has any other Vodafone users experienced similar problems and whats the best radio for Vodafone in London?
Cheers

Surprised you say Artemis is unstable, did you do a task 29 before flash. I found this ROM on Vodafone to be excellent. Try the radio in my signature, it seems ok for me but to be honest the best advice I can give is flash one and try it for a few days.

I'd love to leave them, but unfortunately took up an 18 month contract on November, thinking about my past experience with them was good. What a dope i am.
HI Guys
I have got exactly the same problem with the battery/reception on Vodafone.
I am using Energy May 13th 23569 GTX, with Radio 2.10.50.28_2, and also get 1 day of battery tops.
I have noticed the Phone stays in flight mode sometimes after losing the signal, which is quite annoying.
yo
i live in a complete 2g area and use the radio RADIO_2.10.50.19_2
but as you are london and probably get alot of 3G and H symbols on your HD2 it will probably help but as soon as i visit my girlfriends in lincoln and get H, my phone lasts 1.5 days ish but i am used to charging nightly
its something we have to live with man with these power hungry phones
Im on voda in uk - midlands
I use radio 2.10.50.28.2 and it seems the same as every radio i have tried - at home constantly dropping in and out, from 3 bars 3G - to flight mode and back again.
In work i have almost full signal and H 3-4bars.
Im not too worried about the battery its just the signal at home that pees me off!!
Ive tried (i think) every radio apart from the .51. ones - does anyone know which radio vodafone HD2 shipped with??
If you have bad signal at home, get yourself a SureSignal booster (check it out here)
I use the 2.10.50.28 up here in Glasgow, and I get occasional drops at home, but out and about it's usually always very good. Sitting right now with H at 2-bars.
We had Vodafone for our corporate phones at my last work, they changed to O2 after a month as so few users managed to get decent signals. That was UK-wide.

Vodafone and O2 share masts, so signal is generally the same in all areas of the UK for both networks. Of course it does vary slightly from area to area, and radio and make of phone matter too.
I think Voda just aren't as good as they used to be with reception. I think the phone must have something to do with it as well, but the general picture i get when asking around is that they're just not as good as they used to be.
Oh well, gonna try 2.10 and see if its any improvement.
Vodafone reception has been fine for years in all of my Nokia handsets but was so rubbish on the HD2 I was beginning to regret my purchase. Switched to O2 and reception is now fabulous, no regrets now!
Voda signal
Have to agree with most of the people who have posted on this thread. Voda reception is patchy at best.
At times I can be on full strength HSPDA, then for no apparent reason, I'll be in exactly the same spot and the signal just disappears altogether.
Though to be fair, I'm not sure whether to blame it on voda as I came from Three which got a brill signal in all areas, but that's all I really have to compare it too. We do use Voda 3G dongles on laptops at work...and they are absolute crap...lucky if we get a signal, and when we do they're slower than Slowy McSlow on the slow train from Slowsville!!
Voda reception seems to have got really bad this last 2 years they are even offering a home router to boost reception!!??(I think they missed the MOBILE phone part!),
having said that my TP2 had much better reception than the HD2..
I have also tried alot of different roms and Radios I am in Hampshire so not too far from London.... I am using 2.09.50.29_2 along with the cab for call quality fix it is a US Tmo radio, so you need to use with a TmoUS compatible rom.
I know alot of people are using the 2.10 radios but after many trials I have found 2.09 the most stable and best all round for data, reception and battery,
Hope this helps
The whole point of the router is to boost your signal at home. A lot of people live in bad signal areas, but have no problems elsewhere, so that is designed to help me get better signal at home, the one place you can at least do something about it. And apparently, it works very well.

HTC HD 2 - Drops signal completely when held!

Just got my HD2 on Vodafone.
Signal is fine when the phone is stationary, but when I hold it.. it drops from 4 bars to either 1 or none.
I have:
- Disabled data/3g/hspda etc.
- Tried many different radio's up until 2.12.50.02_2 (which is an improvement but it still happens)
- Updated ROM to latest Energy Series.
Am I right in thinking the phone is faulty?... or is this common?
Thanks
Hehe, this is ridiculous. I believe HD2 has one of the best signal reception among the smartphones. My signal has always been great so I believe your phone is faulty. My 2c. Let's hear the others.

That is normal, our big heads are blocking the signal, but seriously, the "bars" are misleading, thanks to all those Cingular commercials , it really takes good signal quality to get a good connection, not good signal strength ...
So if the bars are dropping, and you cannot use the phone then that is a problem, but if the bars drop , and the phone/data/whatever works fine, then it is not really an issue ...
Just as an example, when I am at the college here, I have only one bar, but I am on hsdpa, and get like 2 meg of data, wish it was hsdpa+ but that is a diff story, and the phone works fine with only 1 bar, now inversely , people on VZ where I am at have 3 bars and their data is sooooo slow, and they drop calls ...
p.s. if it is dropping to none, check your area make sure they are not upgrading the towers, it is happening a lot and often here in the US in some areas ....

Yeah it's dropping to the point it loses signal, I try to call my mobile from my landline and I get the answering service.
What's really strange is, I just put a T-Mobile sim card in... and when I hold the phone, there's no bar dropping at all.
So in summary.
Vodafone Sim:
Stationary - 4 bars
Holding - drops to the point of no reception
T-Mobile Sim
Stationary - 4 bars
Holding - 4 bars

No it's not the US one.
So.. combination of hardware fault and weak signal?
wrong forum. this should be posted at the iphone4 forums.
the HD2 had to be one if the best reception phone and i am sure many agrees.
Just phoned up Vodafone to see if any problems, and they said there are no faults in the area at all. They said it was probably the handset but I explained that I had tried with a T-Mobile and Orange sim with no such problems.
They then said they'll send me out a new Vodafone sim card as they suspect that could be the issue. And that could take up to 5 working days... taking me out of my 7-day cancellation period, so naturally I said no thanks.
Going to head into my town center and pick up a Vodafone sim from the £1 shop... if I still have that problem I'm cancelling as I can find the same deal on Orange.
Question...
Has any one experienced a sim card being at fault for bad/dropping connections??? Seems complete rubbish to me, especially seeing as the sim is new...

[Q] Orange in UK

Hi Guys,
just wondering, does anyone have a desire Z on orange UK? I was wondering if the phones are sent out with orange software etc rather than plain android operating system? I know the older phones orange used to brand them by not just the sticker but also their software...
Also are the phones normally simlocked?
One more thing - how has your experiance been in orange network? I have seen some complaints as to getting internet can be slow etc... Not sure if this is the right place to ask but would like to know...
I am planning to move to a desire z on orange - currently got a htc touch hd on O2.
Thanks for your help!
Orange as a network are not too bad, and are getting slowly better again.
Their phones will be sim locked, and also while locked you won't be able to install any new radio firmware on your phone (they just won't work).
They have been known to use their own launcher lately, however sense will still be installed so you can swap to htc's stock launcher, not sure on what they are doing with the Z though.
I have an unbranded unlocked z and running on orange, the signal is fantastic.
I got mine from Mobiles.co.uk and all their handsets are supposed to be unlocked and unbranded. Mine is definately unbranded but haven't tested if it's unlocked.
Do Orange even sell the DZ ? I can see the DHD on their website, so I guess there's a good chance the DZ is following behind.
Remember that coverage can vary greatly, depending on where you are. See if you can borrow a phone from someone you know who has Orange, to test the signal out in your area. Or get a free pay-as-you-go SIM from Orange to test out the signal before you commit. Orange and T-Mobile are merging, so their coverage should improve through that.
Orange is terrible where I am and Vodafone is good, but if I moved somewhere else it could easily be the other way round.
Well Orange and T-Mobile have/are merging so they will have the best coverage in the country come March.

Well, if they both had dodgy coverage in a particular area, then with the merger they'll still have dodgy coverage there. So I'm not sure it's that simple ?

You'd be suprised. For example, in my house the Orange and T-Mobile signals are bad (had them before), but Vodafone is fine. Similarly a friend's house in a different part of the country has the same issue (Vodafone isn't that great there, but a lot better than the Orange/T-Mobile signals).
Orange vs T-Mobile
Thanks guys... well I was planning to get the phone from CPW - like mentioned it is not offered directly from orange.
T mobile has good offers for the phone as well... but have read that when getting the phone from places like CPW, they cap the speed of data which has me concerned. Otherwise their 1GB allowance is definitely more attractive to try out.
hmm anyone has got any experiance of T-mob data speeds?

I am currently on ORange in Dundee with a Pro2, data and voice been fine almost anywhere in the city (3G loses a bit when I'm in the middle of my house but it IS a new build so the attic is extra thick for insulation. However I noticed that when I set up the T-Mobile/Orange roaming a few weeks ago, it picks up a strong T-Mobile signal in the places it couldn't before. Now I have taken out a Desire Z via MobilePhonesDirect.co.uk on T-Mobile and I'm still using the Orange SIM in the Desire until my contract runs out come February and it's given me no problems. Simply roams to T-Mobile in several consistent blackspots... Once the T-Mobile 3G can be used on Orange it'll be even better!

Am I getting what I should be getting?
Hello
I just happen to have upgraded to desireZ with cpw, and im on orange uk. Internet speed is fine (when u get H connection). In london though its pretty much everywhere
Whats best with orange is fact that they joined with t_mob and now the coverage is even better, although 3G will only start after Xmas :S...
Otherwise, phone is brill, but Im still getting used to android (used to be winmo for past 3 years...)
Hope this helps

I also upgraded via CPW, it's worth pointing out that 90% of their phones are sim unlocked and unbranded
Am currently on TMob and with the recent merge Tmob/orange you have the option to jump network when reception is crap, at the moment it's only 2g tho

Do you find that 500MB is sufficient for your use?

I've not done a speed test yet nor experienced any slowness, only when there's bad reception.

To be honest I'm not sure, am on unlimited web n talk (internet) which works out to be 3gig for an extra fiver a month. I think with these types of phones you'd be better off with unlimited if you can get it
Is 500mb enough?
Well, I used to be on 500 for 18 months, and only once went over when my landline i-net was down due to BT. But now with the upgrade Ive gone for 1gig, and Im glad I did. This market thing is so much bigger than msofts winmo! Also, fone seems so much snappier with inet, utube,msn... I will deffo go over 500/month.
Just realized I havent installed skype yet...
Is 1gig gonna be enough...???

There's an app on market called NetCounter which shows your data usage, might be worth using that to help monitor data.
Im currently on Orange (contract now expired) and also looking to upgrade to a Desire Z with Orange (currently using HTC Touch HD).
I'm going to call Orange direct first and see what I can get. If they still don't do the Z then I might get it through Phones4U, on Orange, as they are offering the Z for free on a 24 month contract @ £25 pm which seems quite good.
Phones4U can also do upgrades so I have sent them a request to see if they can offer anything better than the £25 pm contract.
